A thread for those who want to discuss new BM but dont want to start a new thread on every "minor" album.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 19 March 2011 07:43 (fourteen years ago)

This is my fave BM release of 2011 so far. I think I recommended it to Glenn but I cant remember what he thought of it

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 March 2011 02:02 (fourteen years ago)

Thought the logo said "Queen" for a second.

There's nothing left alive but a pair of ashy thighs (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 20 March 2011 06:01 (fourteen years ago)

When this board is deleted please can we keep this thread so we can discuss stuff that does kinda get lost on the rolling thread?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 March 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

seriously?

kl0p's son (k3vin k.), Sunday, 20 March 2011 18:51 (fourteen years ago)

what does it matter to you

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 March 2011 18:52 (fourteen years ago)

dude there are 6 posts on the thread! two of them concern the thread title! you can probably start a new version of it that will be the same from memory!

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 20 March 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

rolling metal moves fast with promo talk and by the time the rest of us hear something the chat is lost. its a bugger to search too. smaller genre specific rolling threads would strike a balance between the big thread and a sub-board

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 March 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

xp obv

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 March 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

smithy it would be no hassle for jjj to move it over. saves me from starting a new thread on each one plus if people have posted on threads shouldn't the threads be allowed to stay?
I'd hope that since the unwanted board will likely be deleted you might at least post on the sub-genre rolling threads as a bit of a compromise

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 March 2011 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

oooh it seems Fen have a split CD album with De Arma just come out this week

oh cool this thread was moved over. Hope it survives, would like good stuff recommended for me to check out.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 March 2011 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

cant find anywhere in uk selling these

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 00:05 (fourteen years ago)

not even norman recs or second layer have them, dj mencap you got anything i could check?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 02:10 (fourteen years ago)

i like fen, and i really like bm logos like that, that look kinda messily runic or celtic.

on that note, ever hear of cirrhus? vocalist from Bone Awl

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 02:53 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't but I do dig me some Bone Awl , I have 1 LP and a tape (complete with barbed wire!)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 02:55 (fourteen years ago)

they have a new 7" out and it kicks ass

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 03:00 (fourteen years ago)

oh i think i have a 7" somewhere too. they have so much stuff tho.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 03:04 (fourteen years ago)

i meant cirrhus

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 03:05 (fourteen years ago)

ahh right. Is it different to bone awl?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 03:05 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't heard much new black metal this year, but I'm enjoying
Silva Nigra's The New Age For The New God. I like this one better
than an older one I heard by them. They are pretty much steeped in
an old Darkthrone approach, but with some of the new Watain-like intensity
and a near-black/thrash approach in places.

I'm listening to the new Raspberry Bulbs (Bone Awl side project).
It's just something I happened to stumble upon. Not sure how it compares
to the mother band. It's a pretty literal, ultra-raw blend of black and punk.
It's interesting, but I'm not sure if it's anything that's going to stick with me.
Kinda reminds me of stuff Ildjarn did in his early days, but not as good.

serenchwilen, Monday, 21 March 2011 03:30 (fourteen years ago)

I've been meaning to give that new Fen a listen,
and I probably should go back and listen to Bone Awl proper.
Can't quite remember what they are like.

serenchwilen, Monday, 21 March 2011 03:33 (fourteen years ago)

pretty much a mix of Punk n BM!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 03:34 (fourteen years ago)

and yeah give Fen a listen, one of the best things I've heard this year so far. I keep recommending it to Glenn but he hasn't responded so I think that must mean he already heard it and hates it as usual hahaha

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 03:36 (fourteen years ago)

And there's a new Negative Plane out that I haven't seen anyone mention on the boards here.
For me, it's not living up to the heaps of praise I've read in reviews, but it's growing on me.
Maybe a couple more listens and I'll start to really get it.

serenchwilen, Monday, 21 March 2011 03:48 (fourteen years ago)

will seek out Fen next...

serenchwilen, Monday, 21 March 2011 03:50 (fourteen years ago)

i still have a long way to go to get up to speed with BM. theres still lots of old stuff ive never heard but will be trying to keep up with stuff in here

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 03:53 (fourteen years ago)

What else is in the atmospheric BM style? (apart from burzum, wittr obv)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 03:53 (fourteen years ago)

And hopefully nate will come in here with news of a dispirit release. I need to hear more of them!

Roxy do you have their tape? Its john gossard from Weakling.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 05:38 (fourteen years ago)

recently got Watain's Sworn to the Dark here, and i honestly can't believe how much i dig these guys' essential aesthetic impetus. like, wow!

meanwhile: still waiting on the new Burzum.

Ioannis, Monday, 21 March 2011 08:02 (fourteen years ago)

Essential aesthetic impetus... You mean steez?

born in a test tube, rrraised in a cage (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 21 March 2011 08:10 (fourteen years ago)

haha...

Ioannis, Monday, 21 March 2011 08:17 (fourteen years ago)

Ioannis is it not out yet?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

Oh btw Roxy what do you think of new Burzum? Agree it's better than Belus?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

i actually loved belus and havent listened to this one enough yet to really draw a comparison, but i do really like it on first couple listens and think its p unique

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

I'm digging that Deafheaven that someone posted on RM 2011.

Agree with all on the Fen. They are great at atmosphere.

Negative Plane hasn't hit me yet, but I've only listened a couple of times. Think you need to steep in their sound for awhile before it sinks in.

Anyone heard the Ash Eaters demo yet? Brown Jenkins guy doing something new. That might be cool.

Brooker T Buckingham, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

I think this thread is a great idea, btw. Didn't seem like there was a whole lot of interest in BM on the RM thread.

Brooker T Buckingham, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

haven't heard it yet but cosmo's review really made me want to listen asap, obv i got the free download

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

xpost that was re: Ash Eaters

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

i want that fen/de arma split really bad

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

i want both but cant find a UK distro and the £ is really shit against the euro just now

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:35 (fourteen years ago)

so can anyone recommend me some more atmospheric BM like fen? that's the stuff i've been in the mood for rather than raw stuff

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

oh dude! dark ambient/ambient black metal/black ambient thread for recommendations and discussion
^thread got me into what are now some of my favorite bands

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

particularly Dark Ages, but i'm not sure if that's BM enough for what you're looking for
really great stuff from the guy that does Drudkh, but i think we've talked about this before
anyway lots and lots of good recommendations on that thread

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 15:39 (fourteen years ago)

drudkh? ok i'll give it a shot. doesnt need to be too BM since you know atmospheric post rock/metal/sludge is my thing too. Just as long as i can hear some BM stuff too. I really liked the last Drudkh but i know some heads moaned it was too post rock and not metal enough.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

also he's a nazi so feel free to illegally download

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 15:44 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah i like Darkspace and some xasthur

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:45 (fourteen years ago)

Drudkh is awesome. Start at the beginning of the catalog and work your way forwards. It's a rewarding trek.

Check out the Ides Of Gemini for some forward-thinking atmospheric BM. Almost has a british isles folk vibe. Clean, haunting female vocals. They have a release called The Disruption Writ you can listen to/buy on Bandcamp.

Brooker T Buckingham, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

i guess wraiths count? i have one of their lps

i know all of the drudkh (as roxy knows i avoided them for a long time but the band released a statement saying theyre not nazis or far right or fascists so i see no reason not to believe them)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

oh and im looking forward to the new wrath of the weak, anyone heard that yet?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

I like some of the folksy Drudkh stuff, didn't know they were nazis though goddamn

ka£ka (NickB), Monday, 21 March 2011 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

i saw a pic of the dude in a swastika armband, is what i'm basing that on - admittedly to yall this is hearsay so feel free to disregard

i hate it when bands release statements about nazi accusations that don't say "we aren't racist" they just say "we aren't political and don't talk about politics in our lyrics" - yeah that's what's bad about nazis, thanks for proving that you actually are a dick

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 21 March 2011 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

roxy it could have been an ancient pic when young & stupid.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

some nazi's started as communists so people can def change

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:57 (fourteen years ago)

but yeah if in doubt download it for free and dont give em money. Drudkh are on Spotify so i listen there.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 15:57 (fourteen years ago)

anyway

Not BM, but features members of BM bands and roxy since you dont read RM you may have missed the discussion.

is there any Gnaw Their Tongues material due?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

ilxor please tell us about the Liturgy album. How does it compare to the last one? Have you reviwed it online yet?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

i haven't heard the last one in full yet, just bits & songs here and there (latecomer i know). and i will tend to review things week of release, or thereabouts. ask in rolling metal: lots of those guys have heard it! ...and can describe it better than i can ^___^

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Monday, 21 March 2011 17:45 (fourteen years ago)

oh well we can talk about it when it comes out and we all have it

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 17:55 (fourteen years ago)

worthwhile article regarding Drudkh's politics

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

so basically, drudkh still refuse to make an outright statement re: their politics and another listener is trying to draw conclusions from the music? or did i miss something in that article?

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

not saying the conclusions drawn aren't to be considered; but it's still conjecture, right?

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Monday, 21 March 2011 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

that article is by jimmy christ (who was?) editor of Terrorizer.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

roxy you know anything about CIRCLE OF OUROBORUS all i know is that they are a finnish BM band. Smithy you love finnish BM, you know anything about them? Would like to know more or hear something before buying it as im skint atm , no spare cash to take risks as I sometimes do. When i get money im doing a profoundlore order that ive been wanting all month.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

pre-order price USA $15 ppd ROW $18 now thats cheap.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

not saying the conclusions drawn aren't to be considered; but it's still conjecture, right?

It's about as much conjecture as if a dude made three albums and Reagan was a hero on each one. Either he's engaged in a career-long satirical take on Reagan-as-hero, or he thinks Reagan's a hero.

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 21 March 2011 19:10 (fourteen years ago)

IOW Drudkh are pretty plainly Ukrainian nationalists and trying to work around that involves a lot of fooling yrself imo, and "nationalist" isn't really a benign term esp. in that region

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 21 March 2011 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

what does IOW stand for? I keep reading it as Isle Of Wight

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 19:43 (fourteen years ago)

in other words

I only use this style of type when I choose it (DJ Mencap), Monday, 21 March 2011 19:44 (fourteen years ago)

you've not actually ordered it right? I only ask cos I was gonna get the Raspberry Bulbs LP the other day from em but it added $4 on once I got to Paypal! So I sacked it off (Second Layer said they were getting it)

I only use this style of type when I choose it (DJ Mencap), Monday, 21 March 2011 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

I did order it, didn't wanna wait then lose the pre-order price incase it jumped up by $10. It charged me £11.33. No added $4

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

huh, they've increased the price of the RBs now (I guess it's not a pre-order now?) but I just bought a CoO anyway - even if these come to the UK they'll prolly cost more than that - good lookin out

I only use this style of type when I choose it (DJ Mencap), Monday, 21 March 2011 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

that's probably it, dont really wanna spend an extra $4 so im glad i ordered now.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

Re: Drudkh - if you don't like this it's clearly not for you.

Siegbran, Monday, 21 March 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

I like their music a lot (same with burzum) I guess if they are a bit "dodgy" or even outright vile like varg, i can listen to their music but not pay for it and buy stuff from those i want to. If the lyrics promote that stuff though then I'm out. Gotta draw a line somewhere, but i'm not gonna call someone who separates the music from the people making nazi's. I will however call actual neo nazis/racists/fascists cunts or dicks or wankers or whatever though!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

so where do you fall on drudkh, then?

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Monday, 21 March 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

spotify!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

you bought the last drudkh didnt you?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

i did, it's alright but not really all that compelling. i dont get spotify here tho :(

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Monday, 21 March 2011 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Monday, 21 March 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

the blood of innocent Poles is on your hands....

Threadkiller General (Viceroy), Monday, 21 March 2011 20:48 (fourteen years ago)

i know we've discussed this before on ILM- where is our handy "cheat sheet" of dodgy NSBM & related bands to avoid purchasing from...?

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Monday, 21 March 2011 20:49 (fourteen years ago)

I tried making one for neofolk and I was successful in naming like 3 bands total that weren't dodgy.... kinda sad. I'd say probably most all US BM is fine... unless they get Phil Anselmo involved.

Threadkiller General (Viceroy), Monday, 21 March 2011 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

didnt we have a past thread abt it someplace?

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Monday, 21 March 2011 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

quite possibly but it probably wasnt even on a metal thread haha. it was probably something that was derailed

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

oh well i guess you created a new one.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 00:03 (fourteen years ago)

ok the circle of ouroborus was out on cd already so found an erm digital version that will tide me over til the lp arrives. Liking it so far!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 03:03 (fourteen years ago)

that hit the spot, exactly what i was looking for

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 04:22 (fourteen years ago)

oohh must look for the BaN album.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

AG, check your email.

Brooker T Buckingham, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

CoO are interesting, can't totally back the vocals. I really like Key though, Neo-folk project of some of the guys in it. http://www.handmadebirds.com/store/D-008.php

Are the Black Twilight Circle bands from LA on anyone's radar? Arizmenda/Volahn/Ashdautas/Kallathon/Dolorvotre/Blue Hummingbird on the Left, etc etc. Interesting mix of LLN worship and Mexican BM in the vein of Xibalba with a heavy focus on Mayan mythology lyrically. They'll be going on a somewhat extensive tour this Spring/Summer.

Ryan, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

brooker i already found it thanks i dont have your webemail tho.

oh wait gmail put the ilx robot thing in spam

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

Ryan, i dont know anything about those bands, first ive even heard of them, heh

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

I've only checked out that BTC comp "Worship Black Twilight." It's pretty solid. I've been meaning to check out more Ashdautas and Volahn. There's a really good crusty d-beat band in that circle whose name has escaped me. I found their demo trolling through the blogs and it really hit me hard.

Brooker T Buckingham, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 17:18 (fourteen years ago)

i know its probably not quite the correct thread, but has anyone heard the more recent Blue Sabbath Black Cheer stuff? I don't recall any chat on the rolling metal thread about them. I figured this is as good a place as anywhere to ask. Bimble was into them hehe. He was the only one whoever chatted about them. Sure miss him.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 17:48 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I do too; I'd love to get into some BSBC

Destroy A. Monsters (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 17:56 (fourteen years ago)

I have quite a few tapes and a couple of vinyls but stan just keeps releasing so much stuff and with the exchange rate + postage from usa doubling a year or two ago, it just became impossible to keep up.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 18:01 (fourteen years ago)

Bimble loved Borre Fen if you want to hear something he would have recommended if he was still alive.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 18:02 (fourteen years ago)

he liked a good few other ones but i cant remember offhand which ones

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah he loved this one too

http://www.discogs.com/Blue-Sabbath-Black-Cheer-Untitled/master/58250

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 18:04 (fourteen years ago)

he had a blog post about how goth they were and stan posted about it on forever doomed and i told him how i knew him and was the one he referred to in the article (a scottish friend who introduced them to BSBC)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 18:05 (fourteen years ago)

brooker i replied to your webmail btw

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 18:42 (fourteen years ago)

anybody else find j. bennett's Fallen review in the April dB a little...um...odd, maybe? i mean, a Vincent-fucking-Price comparison? like, c'mon, dude!

Ioannis, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, it's another rather cautious review.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 20:06 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno--he sez Belus was his fave 2010 release, so...? i just found his overall critique somewhat beside the point, i guess. still haven't listened to the new one, tho, so what do i know?

Ioannis, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 21:14 (fourteen years ago)

Way xpost: "Are the Black Twilight Circle bands from LA on anyone's radar?"

Fuck, yes, and available youtube footage suggests they can deliver that super-necro LLN sound live.

just about to play the Blut Aus Nord now, any thoughts on it yet brooker?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 00:04 (fourteen years ago)

"they can deliver that super-necro LLN sound live"

That Volahn live album was a lo-fi step to far for me though. Heard a bunch of other BTC that's pretty great though (all downloaded from blogs...gettng hold of this stuff, even if you send them money, seems to be tricky)

Wandering Boy Poet, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 14:03 (fourteen years ago)

Listening to this now and it's damn weird and experimental

Neige Morte are an obscure entity from Lyon, France, creating an icy and oppressive hypothermic musical blast. Ponderous and bizarre passages of atmospheric sound crack and give way plunging the listener into frozen riffs as they are carried off by the post-Black Metal current tearing through the heart of Neige Morte.
The cruel and nihilistic aesthetic chimes with much of the output of the French underground scene as does the experimental edge found in the five tracks served on this debut platter. Difficult to categorize neatly, Neige Morte are merely interested in engulfing the listener in the slow embrace of frozen death.
Tracklisting:
01 - Reflexe Post- Mortem 10:49
02 - Tout Sonne Faux 6:53
03 - Need Some Air 2:24
04 - Fausse Victime Vrai Bourreaux 6:33
05 - Bourbier 5:03

RunningTime: 31:40

Roxy seems to dig it iirc

Listening to the new Blut aus Nord now. Not bad. Some parts sound like Scorn. I think as weird French BM goes, I prefer Spektr, though.

that's not funny. (unperson), Friday, 25 March 2011 17:42 (fourteen years ago)

Not heard Spektr, which of theirs should I start with?

It's one of the dudes from BONE AWL (the drummr iirc?), and not too far off in terms of atmosphere, but definitely more of a punk / crust / oi kinda vibe. More melodic, if I dare use that word. Very, very cool. I think there are some Youtube clips...

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Friday, 25 March 2011 23:57 (fourteen years ago)

Nuclear War Now is doing a 2LP or 2CD reissue of everything Conqueror did. If you want to hear the missing link between Blasphemy and Revenge. The bands, not the concepts.

GLOWER METAL (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 26 March 2011 05:04 (fourteen years ago)

you dislike the concepts?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 27 March 2011 00:15 (fourteen years ago)

Well, I'm pro blasphemy, sure. Revenge is kind of pointless, most of the time. But I love both the bands and am always pro-angry Canadians.

GLOWER METAL (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 27 March 2011 00:39 (fourteen years ago)

I mean, blasphemy's pointless, too. But you get some good albums out of it.

Wrote a review of it today for The Wire. It's not bad at all. In fact, it's quite good. Definitely in a Michael-Gira-collaborating-with-Coil vein, but I don't have a problem with that.

AG: I don't know if Gnaw Their Tongues are releasing new material this year or not but Mories has a BM group called De Magia Veterum who have a new album coming out called The Divine Anthithesis and it is mad caustic and has overtones of Celeste, Abruptum and Omega Deathspell. It gave me a really bad headache the first time I listened to it but I really like it now.

Listening to Raventale right now and it definitely has a doom feel despite being BM. Apparently the 1st album is basically Drudkh worship but i couldn't find that album. Im listening to the 2nd one just now and enjoying it. I think if you dig Drudkh or Austrasian Goat you will stand a good chance of liking them.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 2 April 2011 02:11 (fourteen years ago)

and more on the alcest re-release

Release date: 20.05.2011

"Le Secret" is not a new album by Alcest, but the debut EP from the incomparable project from France. It was originally released back in 2005 in an edition of just 1,000 copies which sold out before the release of "Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde" (2007), thus becoming a sought-after collector's item.

To Alcest themselves, however, it isn't this fact that constitutes the importance of "Le Secret." It's the music of the release which laid the groundwork for all future Alcest compositions with its epic tracks alternating between euphoric and nostalgic moods. Conceptionally, this EP sets out the framework that is essential for all other works of Alcest: music and lyrics are used here by Neige as a medium to channel and communicate the esoteric experiences of his early childhood.

"Le Secret" isn't just re-released in its original form, though. Instead, Neige has realised his dream of many years to re-record these tracks which are so meaningful to him personally and so fundamental to Alcest and to adjust them to his matured demands. Still, the original recordings from 2005 are an equal part of this re-release.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 2 April 2011 02:11 (fourteen years ago)

Ved Buens Ende (liked)
Fleurety - 1st album (liking so far)

Roxy or anyone, got any opinions on these bands or anything similar I need to hear? old or new.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 3 April 2011 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

haven't listened to that much bm this year. so far, these are the ones i enjoyed most :

mamaleek - kurdaitcha
arts - vault of heaven (side project from one of the ancestors guys)

haven't listened to blut aus nord's latest. and have to listen negative plane more carefully.

Liturgy album is great!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 00:53 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think sounding like Circle is a bad thing at all, but it's not a particularly black metal thing. Of course the album is on Thrill Jockey which is more likely to release an album by Circle than it would by most metal acts.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 00:59 (fourteen years ago)

Holy shit that Liturgy track. Is the whole album like this??? Neeeeeed this.

been seeing a lot of hate toward liturgy lately. i'm still eager to hear the new record though. have people always been pretty critical of these guys, or is it just happening now because of their growing popularity?

borntohula, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 03:28 (fourteen years ago)

christ almighty, "generation" is one awesome track.

borntohula, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 03:34 (fourteen years ago)

Anyone who uses black metal as a springboard towards something a little different and new rather than spewing Satanic/anti-Christian rhetoric is certain to be met with scorn from purists.

But who cares what they say, the new Liturgy is phenomenal.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 03:41 (fourteen years ago)

a lot of hate has come from that interview they did, i know a bunch of ppl from dffd were moaning about it.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 11:51 (fourteen years ago)

saw liturgy live opening for shrinebuilder and thought they had promise. didn't love their first lp but this new track is way more to my liking. if the whole album sounds like a circle/meshuggah hybrid, then I will be very happy. kind of ridiculously catering to my personal tastes there.

original bgm, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 11:56 (fourteen years ago)

what interview, ag?

original bgm, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 11:57 (fourteen years ago)

if the whole album sounds like a circle/meshuggah hybrid, then I will be very happy

that's not how I'd've described it, for the most part it's fairly faithful-sounding BM but w/ more fucked up drumming and some Glen Branca walls of guitar here and there

I think it's terrific

for me it's not what that guy (righty) saying, but the way he says it
so so so so
"we're all sensitive" guy not quite as lol, but maybe i just don't watch these interviews much?

i like their music ok though

Ralpharina (La Lechera), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 13:14 (fourteen years ago)

ooof, that interview.

that's not how I'd've described it, for the most part it's fairly faithful-sounding BM but w/ more fucked up drumming and some Glen Branca walls of guitar here and there

hmm. like I said, haven't heard the album yet, but the new emphasis on using playful time sigs in a hypnotic, repetitive way on "generation" was definitely what I was vibing on. what you're describing sounds pretty good but I could definitely go for a whole album of tracks working the "generation" model.

original bgm, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 14:21 (fourteen years ago)

No I mean "they look like indie boys cuz they live in Brooklyn."

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

Liturgy album is great!

― Algerian Goalkeeper,

^^ have you listened to the album? how's it like?

i enjoyed 'high gold' way more than 'generation', prob because i was way more into that kind of stop/start instrumental dynamics a couple years back (when i was into don cabarello, june of 44 et. al). nowadays it just kind of, err, bores me? (not that i found 'generation' bad, by all means. only not that much interesting)

also looking fwd for the new weakling...

btw, are there any recent releases by bone awl? the alkerdeel record from last year was A+

rusty_allen, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

but you could close your eyes and still hear it in the way they talked
that's what i meant
doesn't matter if they look like hanson or not
i just never ever want to hear them speak extemporaneously ever again

Yeah, that dude is pretentious and punchable as fuck, and his band looks utterly uncomfortable throughout - you can see them thinking "oh, dude, don't say THAT," but just like when some folks here were talking about how Oneohtrix comes off in interviews, I kinda respect his complete candor and the fact that I think he KNOWS he's being a pompous ass. Dude would be making a lot more friends by towing the line, but he clearly doesn't give a shit. Gotta respect that.

Dude to the immediate right of Hunt Hendrix or whatever his name is a dead ringer for Eddie Vedder, btw.

also (usually) worth checking : oaks of bethel and njiqahdda (tho the amount of releases makes it almost inhumanely possible to keep track)

^^sort of note to self, actually. ah

I've had to resort to keeping an actual list of Njiqahdda releases that I can tick off. Not really felt the last few (well the last few I got, there's been at least a handful since), so perhaps I need to let go. Will give them a little longer though.

Liturgy's rhythms are unique. Talked about it with Hunt-Hendrix the other day.

that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 10 April 2011 13:57 (fourteen years ago)

Liturgy's rhythms are quite reminiscent of Zach Hill and Weasel Walter.

The aim of this new project is to create nostalgic, romantic and light atmosphere of solitude, beholding, childhood and warmth.

ugh. this is what happens when black metallers get old, isn't it?

rockapads, Sunday, 10 April 2011 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

Liturgy's rhythms are quite reminiscent of Zach Hill and Weasel Walter.

Not nearly as complex as Hill or as "mindlessly" (I put it in quotes 'cause I know he thinks about every hit) aggressive as Walter. He is after something very specific from his drummer, something that's rooted in blast beats but slightly different from the norm.

that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 10 April 2011 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

"mindlessly" (I put it in quotes 'cause I know he thinks about every hit) aggressive

then why even use that word?

sarahel, Sunday, 10 April 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

Because it's meant to sound mindless, even though it clearly isn't. Weasel is attracted to, and cannily exploits, the imagery of savagery as it relates to black metal and free jazz.

that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 10 April 2011 18:52 (fourteen years ago)

huh, is he normally more… out there? on that new record with mary halvorson he just seems like… a free jazz drummer to me.

j., Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, try the group he co-leads with second drummer Marc Edwards; they've got two releases that are just relentlessly assaultive. You could also check out his Tribute to Masayuki Takayanagi album with Jim O'Rourke and Fred Lonberg-Holm.

that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:17 (fourteen years ago)

i just watched "until the light takes us"... not sure if it was ever mentioned in any of the previous rolling metal threads, but my rental store just got it in this week. it was informative... but a bit weird. fenriz was insufferable. varg seemed to have a better handle on the politics of black metal and gave the genre a good sense of context, but then he got on about his judeo-christian hate and it was harder to take him seriously.

i was hoping that it would be a good primer into black metal music, but the music seemed to be the last thing on the filmmakers' minds.

borntohula, Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

huh, is he normally more… out there? on that new record with mary halvorson he just seems like… a free jazz drummer to me.

Classic ILX. "I dunno, dude...I just hope Corsano doesn't sell out and go all 'Monkey Pockie Boo' on us or some shit. I'm so over stock fiery cacophonic free jazz mayhem."

Also, borntohula, how was Fenriz 'insufferable??' Dude is pretty much the only black metal musician I think I'd have over to my house for dinner. Seems like a genuinely awesome, self-aware kinda dude.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:24 (fourteen years ago)

he just seemed like he was really self-important. maybe that's a kind of self-awareness, because he was really in tune with where he fit within the formation of the scene and whatnot, but a lot of his soundbytes came off as masturbatory and self-congratulatory. he might deserve that kind of praise, i haven't really listened to his work, but i just found it irritating. the "artistic" shots of him walking slowly through a wintry wooded landscape really didn't help much either.

borntohula, Sunday, 10 April 2011 19:33 (fourteen years ago)

Not only have I been listening to the Flying Luttenbachers (and Weasel's various other projects) since about 1997, but I've interviewed him at least twice that I can recall, exchanged multiple emails with him, talked with him at shows (seen the Luttenbachers at least three times)...so yeah, my impression of his work, while certainly open for debate, is not exactly uninformed.

sarahel, Monday, 11 April 2011 17:55 (fourteen years ago)

xpost but I thought Fenriz came off really well in that movie, some of what he said was funny as fuck

he was aware of the camera but how could he not be, he's being filmed for a doc, but that's not the same as "self important"

I thought that the film-makers tone of bemused mockery towards art-world appropriations of black metal was kind of a symptom of their own issues about the status of their documentary, like the art-world became the punching bag for a set of critiques that could apply just as well to themselves

Varg's account of the murder was sorta standard con-talk, pretty disingenuous and the way that the filmmakers never really challenge him made them look like credulous fanboys/fangirls who were just stoked to have access at all- but that's not really good enough considering the issues on the table

I am perhaps biased by my experience of the film- I saw it and thought it was okay, kind of interesting, but pretty shallow in its willingness to let the artists write their own ticket

but I saw it at a filmscreening with the directors, who did a Q+A afterwards about the movie where they seemed really naive and inarticulate

they were asked about the politics of black metal and just said (I'm pararphrasing) "we're not interested in politics, we just love this stuff as art"- which struck me as a totally corny, copout move in this context

sarahel, Monday, 11 April 2011 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not so sold on Liturgy, although I can see the charm of their irreverent approach to BM, the resulting 'thousand monkeys with typewriters' music makes it all extremely hit-and-miss. "Generation" and "Veins Of God" are the only songs that really work IMO, the rest of the album is just full of tremolo picked melodies that are so obvious/random that bands even as primal as Ildjarn or Ganzmord would already have discarded them in rehearsals. In fact, I still have hours of rehearsal material at home from my old band with riffs like that - when you're really desperate for ideas, just randomly move about various scales in the hope you somehow stumble upon a good melody. So to me this record feels mostly like "dumster diving metal". The flat & boring vocals sound like placeholders too.

Siegbran, Monday, 11 April 2011 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

Great drummer though, no doubt about that.

Siegbran, Monday, 11 April 2011 21:04 (fourteen years ago)

So where is the line?

It is a blurry line! Music-wise, black metal is usually fast or mid-tempo, sometimes with slow breakdowns. But as black metal pushes the envelope, it has produced slow atmospheric stuff it sounds very similar to doom stuff that is slow and atmospheric! Also, black metal and doom metal can overlap thematically and lyrically as they both have regions that are super "occult" -- like black magick stuff is big in both genres.

I mean there is some stuff out there that you could just as well call "shoegazey deathrock" or something and have it fit, it is so nebulously tied to any specific metal tradition. I tend to use whatever the band or artist likes to self-define as or basically historical definition -- if a band started out as traditional black metal but they are doing really sludgy slow stuff that sounds like doom metal these days they are still IMO a black metal band.

But as a general rule of thumb, I dunno, here's my music essentialist take (that I don't strictly believe in or follow) - the black metal should sound cold and dark and uncompromising, full of venom and bile. The best black metal invokes anger or aggression, and thus catharsis... Doom metal should sound urgent, hectoring and distraught. The best doom metal invokes fear and terror, and again, catharsis.

I love my puppy -- and she loves me! (Viceroy), Monday, 11 April 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

Sean perhaps you should try Drudkh or Alcest?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 11 April 2011 21:27 (fourteen years ago)

The flat & boring vocals sound like placeholders too.

Yeah, the vocals are really shitty... one of the worst attempts at black metal singing I've ever heard.
They sound more like some hollow scream-o type vocals... like layers of static that just take away from the music.

And the 'Animal Collective attempting to write Brian Wilson hymns' type crap is so soulless and godawful.

Otherwise, the music is gradually growing on me, but the best parts sounds like nice little blasts from an old Glenn Branca project.

I'm surprised that anyone is seriously calling it black metal or any kind of metal at all.

After hearing so much praise about the new Liturgy, I'm mostly disappointed.
There's nothing transcendental or transcendent about it all.

i dont think Liturgy's vocals are bad

^^ me neither. i like that kinda blurry/etheral vocals that just seem to blend with the music despite the aggression (a shoegazey sort of inclination from my teenage years, i guess). which reminds me how much i loved draugar in that particular aspect. one of the things i usually don't enjoy is bm vocals that are way up there in the mix (classical case in point : under a funeral moon. i really enjoy the album, notwithstanding).

looks like i'm the only guy that hasn't listened to 'aesthetica' here...

― Siegbran

i only listened to the split with lyrinx. the vocals reminded me of weakling or (more accurately, perhaps) marblebog. in this last case even sonically. also similar to some "suicidal bm" like i shalt become or nortt but with a more shoegazey sound overall, no?

Thanks Viceroy... Thats pretty much what I thought, It seemed wierd I guess, the same stuff being called 2 or 3 different things.. It's not genius stuff, that's my point! If you want to hear a moderately talented guitarist noodling away over a 180 bpm blast beat, there's tons of those on youtube. Those vocals I think are quite flat due to them being compressed to hell + lots of reverb + low in the mix + not much variation or enunciation.

PG Harpy (Doran), Monday, 18 April 2011 13:05 (fourteen years ago)

I think Mayhem and NWA have similarities in the way that they both redefined their respective genres and made them synonymous with the cities they hailed from. NWA like Mayhem have their fair share of tragedy (Dead/Euronymous Vs Eazy E) and estranged members (Count Grishnackh/Ice Cube). I personally don’t think it’s a stretch to compare Ice Cube’s solo records AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted and The Predator to Burzum classics like Aske and Filosofem . Moreover Cube like Grishnackh was also accused of racism (against Koreans) and antisemitism.

all of this is stretching it quite a bit

both were leaders of their particular groups who exploited the sensational aspects of their chosen genres to gain notoriety...

otm, just wish this was explored more as it's really the only comparison that can be drawn w/out stretching things until they disappear

☠ (roxymuzak), Monday, 18 April 2011 18:06 (fourteen years ago)

the racism issue is SLIIIIGHTLY different w/r/t varg don't you think?!

Yes, because Varg hates blacks, while Cube merely hates Koreans, women, Jews, and gays (less bad) and is, lest we forget, black himself

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Monday, 18 April 2011 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

just to be sure we're on the same page roxy, the clause "who exploited the sensational..." is meant to modify 'leaders' and not 'groups' as again the impression I got was that both were v much opportunistically pushing for their (extremely influential) respective bands to embody the transgressive/criminal/revolutionary extremes of their respective genres, and both were motivated to do this out of personal gain...

but I'll be honest and say that I got this impression from a post by username Goreshovel in the Mayhem vs. Burzum thread, who called Euronymous "a Satanist who loved money"...if there's truth to that statement, then I don't think it's too much of a stretch then to call him black metal's Eazy E...

music loves drugs (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 18 April 2011 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

What's wrong with a Satanist loving money? Seems pretty Satanic to me. In fact, I recall accusations of Euronymous being a communist, an allegation that would certainly fly in the face of him being a, err, capitalist.

lol @ the idea that varg only hates blacks, but even aside from that:
did cube actively endorse genocide and write 100s of screeds supporting it, as varg did from his prison website?

NPR:

NPR, formerly National Public Radio,[1][2] is a privately and publicly funded non-profit membership media organization that serves as a national syndicator to 797 public radio stations in the United States of America.

Nope, not heard either.

P aa opal Poere Pr. 33? The one that wasn't so drone-based? It wasn't bad, no Genevieve, but not bad. People really seemed to like the Clair Cassis, left me a bit cold. The last EP I liked though.

Wandering Boy Poet, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 12:15 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks! I guess Clair Cassis is already broken up as well?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 17:24 (fourteen years ago)

There said they had, but suddenly there's a new EP "Luxury Absolute". Clair Cassis is similar in sound to early Velvet Cacoon, but the songs are relatively short.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 20 April 2011 21:07 (fourteen years ago)

Preferred the rough mixes of "P aa opal Poere Pr. 33" that did the rounds, though it's a nice package. "Atropine", which I think was actually the last VC release, was all minimal echoing soundscapes, as far as I remember. A nice enough experience, but not one I've felt the need to revisit more than a couple of times.

Finally listened to the new Liturgy. I did in fact like it; it's v exhilirating noise rock, and yet this comment by glenn kind of hit home:

I so want to love the Liturgy album. But every time that long silent gap in the middle comes up I find myself saying "Phew, that album's over. Oh, wait, no."

Haven't finished listening to the Krallice yet, so I will withhold comment, but I'm starting to wonder if bm is just not for me...

that being said, has anyone heard the new Ulver yet? is it any good?

Dr. Suggestban, or How I Learned to Stop etc. (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 27 April 2011 04:50 (fourteen years ago)

I-95 Phuck Phace (Eisbaer), Monday, 6 June 2011 01:48 (fourteen years ago)

De-lurking to recommend "Dødssanger", the first album from Norwegian black metal "supergroup" Djevel (members from Kvelertak and Purified in Blood amongst others).

I'm no black metal expert, but the album feels fresh even though its roots are firmly planted in the genre. Listened to it twice on my way to work (yes, I have a long commute) and feel like giving it a third spin right now.

The fifth, conceptual album of the Ukranian band Raventale has without doubt become the most sophisticated, sensual and mature work of the band. «Bringer Of Heartsore» is also the most atmospheric one of all the works by the project of the talented musician Astaroth who succeeded to express nostalgic autumn mood and beauty of nature by means of verses of famous poet of Silver Age Alexander Blok which provided more depth to the album concept. The musical part, as always, features metamorphoses as the musician follows his rule to introduce changes to every following album. The compositions feature brilliant solo guitar parts associated with classical progressive rock and dramatic acoustic guitar instrumentals. The CD is issued as a limited edition digipack, and its booklet includes fragments of the canvases by greatest Russian painters of 19th century: I. Aivasovsky and I. Levitan delivering additional strokes to the mood of Raventale music.

eleven months pass...

Raventale - Transcendence
Format: CD
Release Date: 01.10.2012
Country: Ukraine
Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal

The sixth album of Raventale once again discovers the band creativity to the attentive listeners. «Transcendence» presents majestic and deep music performed in style of savage black metal; this album features perfect sound, performance, musical and lyrical content. Without a doubt, this is one of the best works of Raventale. Conceptually «Transcendence»is on the threshold of the Epoch of the Six Sun. The main aim of the work is contemplation of transcendental and exorbitant forms of being against the background of conventionality and immanent degradation of modern civilization.
