A thread for those who want to discuss new Doom/Sludge/Drone but dont want to start a new thread on every album released.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 19 March 2011 07:46 (fourteen years ago)

When this board is deleted please can we keep this thread so we can discuss stuff that does kinda get lost on the rolling thread?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 March 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

I posted about this on the trad/epic doom thread but thats more for older stuff.

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 20 March 2011 23:07 (fourteen years ago)

good to see you here! Im hoping the sub-genre threads will make things easier for us all to follow plus easier to search.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 March 2011 23:18 (fourteen years ago)

no problem; I'll try to post more to the main rolling thread too, even though imo I'm more false-metal psych dude than anything. Also really want to check out the Liturgy and Orthodox albums talked about in the main thread...

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 20 March 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

God I need that Liturgy so bad. Im waiting on my Orthodox lp arriving but obviously I downloaded it and its bloody great.

the cuzo lp from last year is on Alone Records, i need to pick that up sometime.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 March 2011 23:39 (fourteen years ago)

ohh didn't know about this

Available for PRE-ORDERS. Ltd. colour vinyl. DAMO SUZUKI, the legendary vocalist of the German band CAN, (with whom he recorded four of his most important records, Tago Mago, Future Days, Soundtracks and Bamyasi Ege), and the Spanish band CUZO are releasing in Alone Records, a live album recorded in one of their dates together last year. The title of the album, 'Puedo ver Tu Mente' (I Can See Your Mind), reflects the experience of see live these two acts. Ahead of what usually it can be found on a standard live album, here there are songs that have less recognizable structure. 'Puedo ver Tu Mente' is the recording of a gig that took place in November the 4th 2009 in the small town of Huesca, Spain, where DAMO SUZUKI and CUZO met for the first time on stage. From here, the band and DAMO started a Spanish tour of 7 dates. On the album we have a single piece divided in three movements from where many songs could emerge but that dilutes any trace of structure and links the musical passages with undeniable perfection to other states of mind, sometimes more relaxed and other times more electric. The pause between tracks is no more than the required oxygen intake before making another dive on the listening experience. It seems quite obvious that is very difficult to fit compositional brilliance, technical virtuosity and creative talent in songs that last no more than 4 o 5 minutes, but what if those three components were released from the limitations of time and format?. This concept which is so close to the 'free-jazz' definition, is the glue where the music of DAMO SUZUKI and CUZO mix together and sculpt a sound speech that is constantly mutating and fed back with bites of progressive-rock, stoner, psych, kraut, improvisation and many similar styles. Throughout the length of the album the peaks of intensity and changes of humor are happening continuously in response to the exposure of the mutual influence, the sum of both entities. This is precisely the purpose of the Damo Suzuki's Network through its 'Never-ending Tour', where he plays with other musicians from the different countries. This keeps his discourse alive and dynamic, being reinterpreted every night, without egos among the artists who are really at the service of the music they are playing at that time. This is what CAN and DAMO SUZUKI called 'Instant Composition'; each concert is unique and therefore is a unique opportunity to create a new sound work. That is what DAMO SUZUKI and CUZO made in their first gig together. Listen the album is to feel sorry for not having being present the day the album was recorded and an aware state for staying tune in order to know when and where will tour to introduce the album to the audience. Until then, 'Puedo ver Tu Mente' is also a notch in the gun of DAMO SUZUKI, and a great opportunity to enjoy the best weapon of CUZO, their live performance.

oooh

are they gonna release any of this stuff on CD cause I don't have a record player (though I might be getting one...)

though if you are in the usa you might be better waiting til ATH gets them

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 March 2011 23:45 (fourteen years ago)

ATH?

you heard that Hypnos 69 album yet, pfunkboy?

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 20 March 2011 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

http://www.allthatisheavy.com/

no, ive not heard it yet. They've been around years right? All my stoner rock friends from audiogalaxy/slsk rooms loved them.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 20 March 2011 23:47 (fourteen years ago)

I thought you would have heard of ATH. Sadly the stonerrock.com forums gone now but ATH is still going. Just wish it was a bit cheaper, plus everytime anyone in europe orders, they wont mark value down/as a gift, so almost everyone gets hit with a VAT charge from the customs (and the even higher mandatory and despicable £8 post office charge) which means most euros cant order from them now.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 00:03 (fourteen years ago)

I had a Cuzo album ages ago and found it to be just the most generic post-metal waste of time... maybe they're better now and I got <3 for D Suzuki but he's not exactly choosy about who he teams up with

realest of talk, and sorry to get my promo swag on, but the Witch Mountain album is probably the best doom-related thing I've heard this year so far! I think it is out in about a month and is released by the band themselves so I guess you can direct all questions to Nate not that I've seen him posting for a minute

I only use this style of type when I choose it (DJ Mencap), Monday, 21 March 2011 00:07 (fourteen years ago)

So is "Dopesmoker" by Sleep really the must-hear epic I have had ppl tell me it is recently?

bad voise, it sucked, pick a seat (Trayce), Monday, 21 March 2011 00:10 (fourteen years ago)

yes

but any album no matter by who is always a disappointment if its been really bigged up

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 00:17 (fourteen years ago)

Dopesmoker seems a bit of a commitment, I was planning on hedging my bets with Holy Mountain which seemed like it had more in common with the High on Fire albums I loved

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 21 March 2011 00:22 (fourteen years ago)

great album too. get both!!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 00:23 (fourteen years ago)

xpost- yeah "Dopesmoker" is some kinda monument, but it can be a chore to listen to imo. (I've only got the "Jerusalem" version of it- not sure how different the one you get in stores these days differs)

CharlieS, Monday, 21 March 2011 00:24 (fourteen years ago)

(btw Trayce have you heard the first High on Fire album The Art of Self-Defense? I'm not exactly fluent in metal, but it's one of the best heavy albums I've ever heard, and one of my favorite albums from this last decade...)

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 21 March 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

not heard them (read about them on a swamp thats sludgy if you know what i mean ;) )

1st HOF is still my fave HOF

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 00:28 (fourteen years ago)

what that blog said about artists of war btw

Really powerful and heavy debut, the best way i can come up with to define their sound is High On Fire meets The Sword. The vocals are a bit strained when they try to reach the higher pitch (actually VERY strained) but its kinda part of the deal. The music, though, is a freeakin Sludge/Doom sledgehammer. Titan sized riffs (that owe to Matt Pike volcano tones a lot), eardrum violating drums, and a geral feeling of a stampede war-like epic rage.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 00:30 (fourteen years ago)

interesting

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 21 March 2011 00:32 (fourteen years ago)

you know the blog I speak of?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 00:34 (fourteen years ago)

no...and I'm not really after anything anywayz but I'm gonna check em out regardless...

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 21 March 2011 00:36 (fourteen years ago)

I havwnt heard any HoF yet, ... at least I dont think I have, I listened to some Om and Sleep stuff, some stuff that had a bit of a Sabbathy riffin going on, quite liked it. Really like Earth, was wondering if Dopesmoker was in a similar vein.

bad voise, it sucked, pick a seat (Trayce), Monday, 21 March 2011 00:39 (fourteen years ago)

High on Fire is less drone than those bands I think...

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 21 March 2011 00:44 (fourteen years ago)

early stuff is stoner later more metal

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

you ever listen to any Vitus, Trayce? Born Too Late is pretty droney...

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 21 March 2011 01:18 (fourteen years ago)

well id be surprised if spacerock doesnt kinda have its own thread but stuff like SubArachnoid Space and Paik definitely belongs here. Bardo Pond have their own thread but have no probs discussing them here either.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:33 (fourteen years ago)

but be warned dude; I'll probably end up trying to get you to listen to Erykah Badu once or twice in this thread...

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:45 (fourteen years ago)

Do you guys arcross the pond pay any mind to the High on Fire vs Electric Wizard harn locking? I heard there is a great divide between the Americas and the UK regarding those two bands.. idk, thats why I'm askin.

What. Who is supposed to like which?

both are loved here (tho hof are probably bigger)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:49 (fourteen years ago)

bad voise, it sucked, pick a seat (Trayce), Monday, 21 March 2011 01:53 (fourteen years ago)

From what I've heard, the UK thinks EW is the shit, and think HoF is like second rate in comparison. An cuz of Pike's status in the world of Doomier stuff, the Yanks think he's on par with Wino, so they love HoF

SeanWayne, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:53 (fourteen years ago)

WINO
XP

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:53 (fourteen years ago)

am American, prefer EW (over Sleep, too)

CharlieS, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:53 (fourteen years ago)

Never heard of this sean. Both are adored here

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:54 (fourteen years ago)

Though as i said, i think hof sell more records.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:54 (fourteen years ago)

I did finally hear the new EW... wasn't too stoked. I think they got better records prior

SeanWayne, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:56 (fourteen years ago)

It might be an Yank press thing then, i really don't know. Maybe I'm startin shit.. lol. j/k

SeanWayne, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:56 (fourteen years ago)

new EW is great!!!!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 01:59 (fourteen years ago)

AG, you mentioned Paik upthread: are they still around? They haven't released an album in a few years and afaict they have no upcoming shows at all...do you know dude?

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 21 March 2011 04:18 (fourteen years ago)

I dont, but a lot of these bands just release stuff out of the blue or sometimes material comes out that isnt publicised and miss it completely. Could imagine loads of 7"s in real ltd quantities being out there.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 04:25 (fourteen years ago)

cant find anything about them though. Nothing about splitting up so they might just be somewhere recording an album.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 05:36 (fourteen years ago)

hate to keep talking about it, but the new Liturgy is a huge, massive fucking beast of an album

ilxor you've listened to one odd future album once (ilxor), Monday, 21 March 2011 14:00 (fourteen years ago)

New Grails belongs here, IMO. Interesting psych textures, some quite affecting moments too. Good use of the piano, although I was reminded a couple of times of Tony McCaroll's Classical Gas...

SUBROSA - No Help For The Mighty Ones

Easily delivering their most accomplished and most entrancing album yet (NHFTMO being their third release), the female dominated doom contingent are destined to bring even more awareness to their brand of spellbinding amplifier worship. By delivering their heaviest release to date, SUBROSA’s music is a culmination of supernatural down-tuned guitar and low-end bass, the dark air of two eerie violins, thunderous raw percussion, and seductive female vocals. To get a glimpse of the diabolical sound that SUBROSA conjure, imagine a haunting mix of PJ HARVEY, KYUSS, L7, COVEN, and Appalachian Murder Ballads filtered through the ghostly vibes of American gothic tragedy.

Mixed and mastered by MARDUK bassist Magnus Devo Andersson and featuring artwork from the great artist Glyn Smyth of Scrawled Design, tracklisting for “No Help For The Mighty Ones” goes as follows

1. Borrowed Time, Borrowed Eyes
2. Beneath The Crown
3. Stonecarver
4. The Inheritance
5. Attack On Golden Mountain
6. Whippoorwill
7. House Carpenter
8. Dark Country

SUBROSA are:
Rebecca Vernon: Guitar, vocals
Sarah Pendleton: Electric violin, vocals
Kim Pack: Electric violin, vocals
Dave Jones: Bass
Zachary Hatsis: Drums

http://reigninart.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Grayceon-All-We-Destroy.jpg

GRAYCEON - All We Destroy
GRAYCEON’s third album, “All We Destroy”, is the album the eclectic Bay Area trio have been threatening to make since their inception.

Comprised of cello (Jackie Perez Gratz), guitars (Max Doyle), drums (Zack Farwell), and vocals (Perez Gratz and Doyle), GRAYCEON are a band unlike anything that has been procured in heavy music. Known to create elongated time-stretching odes by combining progressive metal, neo-classical/chamber music, and down-tuned baroque-esque sludge doom, “All We Destroy” is already being heralded as the band’s masterpiece. Heavier, more ferocious, yet more elegant and beautiful, “All We Destroy” is the musical soundtrack to a frantic journey filled with tales of deceit, revenge, and broken hearts, all weaved through the scope of modern-day tragedy

A quick background check on the accomplished musicians that comprise GRAYCEON:

- - Jackie Perez Gratz is also the vocalist and cellist for aquatic doom metal outfit GIANT SQUID and was once a part of chamber neo-classical masters AMBER ASYLUM. She has also has served as the recording cellist for such bands as NEUROSIS, CATTLE DECAPITATION, OM, TODAY IS THE DAY, and most recently appeared and composed all the cello parts featured on the latest AGALLOCH album “Marrow Of The Spirit”

- - Max Doyle and Zack Farwell are also members of one of the most underrated thrash bands in the U.S. today, namely the VOIVOD-influenced band WALKEN. Come to think of it, WALKEN are pretty much the only thrash band we like today.

Tracklisting for “All We Destroy” goes as follows:
1. Dreamer Deceived
2. Shellmounds
3. We Can
4. Once A Shadow
5. A Road Less Travelled
6. War’s End

1990s revival

By the early 1990s, the term "space rock" came to be used when describing numerous American and British alternative rock bands of the time. Shoegazing, stoner rock/metal and noise pop genres emerged into the mainstream with the explosion of bands such as Kyuss, Slowdive, The Verve, My Bloody Valentine, Flying Saucer Attack, Loop, Ride, The Flaming Lips, Failure, Tool, Monster Magnet, Supergrass, Hum, Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Mercury Rev and Muse. The sonic experimentation and emphasis placed on texture by these bands led them to be dubbed "space rock".

In the mid 1990s, a number of bands built on the space rock styles of Hawkwind and Gong appeared in America. Some of these bands (such as Pressurehed and Melting Euphoria) were signed to Cleopatra records, which then proceeded to release numerous space rock compilations. The Strange Daze festivals from 1997-2000 showcased the American space rock scene in 3 day outdoor festivals. The shows were headlined by Hawkwind and Nik Turner in 1997 and featured major players of American space rock: F/i, Alien Planetscapes, Architectural Metaphor, Quarkspace, Melting Euphoria, Pressurehed, Nucleon, Bionaut, Born to Go and others.

A Michigan based space rock scene included Burnt Hair Records, Darla Records, and bands such as Windy & Carl, Mahogany, Tomorrowland, Delta Waves, Starphase 23, Füxa, Auburn Lull, Monaural, Asha Vida, and Alison's Halo. This was a modern movement of the traditional "space rock" sound and was pinned Detroit Space Rock.
[edit] Space rock in the 21st century

Influences from space rock can be heard in UK bands Radiohead, Amplifier, Oceansize, Mugstar and Muse, American bands 30 Seconds to Mars, Angels and Airwaves, The Secret Machines, The Mars Volta and The Boxing Lesson, Australian bands Lunar Module and Space Project, and Turkish band Nemrud.

The first reported involvement of NASA and space rock came in 2009 when an off duty worker from the shuttle program synchronised footage of a Discovery launch with the Flowers Of Hell's 'Sympathy For Vengeance' in an online video which became popular amongst staff at the Kennedy Space Center[3][12]. Star One's 2002 Space Metal album mixes space rock and progressive metal, and many of the songs are linked conceptually by having cult science fiction movies or TV series as their subjects.

Think chris & ned will be able to school us all in space metal!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 20:35 (fourteen years ago)

I'd say Spiritualized/Bloody Valentine/The Lips are space rock but most bands influenced by them/their kind of thing are not very spacey and mostly just shitty. A&A and 30secs are some prime examples.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 21:11 (fourteen years ago)

im guessing wishdoom will be one of those trad metal/epic doom bands with a bit of power metal in them. Kinda like grand magus meets atlantean kodex. But maybe I'll be way off the mark.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 21 March 2011 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

that subrosa album sounds kind of uneven on first listen—the women's voices don't have much personality or theatricality to them—or sheer vocal presence—and they kind of sound like they're singing 90s alt-rock over doom-fuzz songs that came from somewhere else. actually i kind of get tinges of kim deal or claudia gonson or something. but when things really get going, especially when the drummer is bashing the fuck out of things, they hit a sweet spot.

j., Monday, 21 March 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

I love the SubRosa album, it's turning into my favourite Profound Lore release of 2011 so far...and I've heard the new Krallice and Altar of Plagues, so that's very high praise.

A. Begrand, Monday, 21 March 2011 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

I look forward to both of those albums, but yeah they will have to go some way to beat the SubRosa.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

i assume it will grow on me, for sure.

j., Tuesday, 22 March 2011 00:09 (fourteen years ago)

best albums generally do

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 00:11 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i just get a sense that it will only go so far with me because they're up to something that's not totally my thing anyway. i like my metal singing to be more malevolent and incomprehensible.

j., Tuesday, 22 March 2011 00:18 (fourteen years ago)

fair enough. Lots of metal fans dont like female vocalists for some reason too or some just hate growling vox.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 01:15 (fourteen years ago)

trad doom tends to have clean vox not that SubRosa are in anyway trad doom.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 01:15 (fourteen years ago)

I guess you prefer sludge to doom?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 01:15 (fourteen years ago)

this wishdoom album ,whilst still epic doom, definitely will appeal to those who like old school metal/power metal. Can see some of those on that power metal thread last week digging it.

ok, i listened to the subrosa again (on a different system, too), and i could hear the atmosphere a lot better and place the blending between the voices and the violins. but i hadn't gotten to 'house carpenter' before—it's amazing what it did to define the sound of the singing on the other tracks.

The debut album from ANIMA MORTE, "Face the Sea of Darkness", is now available from Dead Beat Media which is a sub label of the great Razorback Records which is already famous for their love of all things horror. Incredibly creepy, dark, and haunting, this is a album made by some very talented musicians, namely Fredrik Klingwall who is a member of progressive metal act "Loch Vostok", Machinery and death metal band Flagellation. Daniel Cannerfelt who is also a member of Flagellation, Stefan Granberg and Teddy Miller who work with progressive metal band Loch Vostok and the defunct progressive metal band Mayadome as well as the Danish power metal band Wuthering Heights. Inspired by 70's progressive rock especially bands like Goblin, Fabio Frizzi, and Morte Macabre, this album is like a soundtrack to classic blood-curdling horror movies especially the ones that came out in the 60's and 70's. Even the title "Face the Sea of Darkness" comes from the phrase "And you will face the sea of darkness, and all therein that may be explored" which comes from Lucio Fulci’s "The Beyond" movie released in 1981. This is creepy prog rock, full of the wonderful vintage sounds of Moog, Hammond and the Mellotron as well as some tasty guitar work. This is not a doom album or even a metal album but most of us doom fans have a love for horror soundtracks and this album delivers in every aspect possible of that genre of music. This is a real blast from the past in terms of sounds from the already mentioned vintage keyboard sounds which are the earthly sound of the Hammond organ which hammer out some classic riffs. There is moody mellotron choirs & strings, moog synth leads, very 70's sounding funky bass lines and some warm acoustic guitar sounds. The album is a workout in atmosphere and while this stinks of 70's retro cinema, fans of Emerson, Lake and Palmer, King Crimson and even Uriah Heep will dig this stuff. Some of the highlights include "He Who Dwells In Darkness" which opens the album after a intro piece, the explosive yet dramatic prog of "Rise Again" to the Moog & Mellotron soaked "Devoid of A Soul". Stunning acoustic guitar creates a warm backdrop for haunting Mellotron on "Wandering", while "The Hunt" recalls classic Goblin recordings with almost funky guitars and spirited synth melodies. The final two tracks are pure horror prog magic, the bombastic "Twilight of the Dead" which features huge Hammond sounds and Mellotron sections and the almost doomy "Funeral March". Being what is basically a soundtrack type of album, the music is very visual. Each section of music conjures up a movie scene, maybe one you know well or maybe just one you imagined and invented yourself. From scenes of fear, panic, tension or even some type of dramatic chase scene, everything is covered here but its the brilliant playing and musicianship that is the main thing and this album is mesmerizing and holds your attention to the very last note.

bit more Info on the Winter album if you're unfamiliar with them (ie j3ff)

Sometimes a band is so far ahead of the times or just so original that people aren't ready for them and only years later do they get the praise they deserve. This is truly the case of Winter. Winter formed in 1988 out of the ashes of local punk bands Doomsday and Meltdown. The thriving underground music scene in NY at the time was split between NYHC, death/thrash metal and punk. Each one was separate from the other in musical style, politics (or lack thereof) and fashion. Somewhere in the middle of all that Winter arrived. At this time every band from the area were playing as fast as possible. Winter however was the complete opposite playing as slow and heavy as possible. They tuned lower than any band and their tempos crawled at a snails pace. Inspired by bands as diverse as Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost, Amebix, Rudimentiry Peni, King Crimson, Hawkwind, Carnivore and Discharge their combination of dark lyrics, low vocals and crushing slow tempos slowly built a following of punks metalheads and even some NYHC/crossover fans. In Long Island they would open up for the big death metal bands of the time like Sepultura and Death while also playing punk/d.i.y. /squat shows in NYC with bands like Nausea and A.P.P.L.E The band signed with Future Shock Records for the release of their debut LP Into Darkness. The album became an instant cult classic. As the years went on Winter's legacy slowly evolved from total obscurity to becoming a cult favorite who were respected around the world. Winter disbanded in 1991.

20+ years later the immense impact /influence of Winter continues on! From Cathedral to Grief to Unearthly Trance to Coffins. All these bands readily admit the influence of the mighty Winter. After a few dodgy reissues and shitty bootlegs from other labels comes the OFFICIAL re-release of "Into Darkness".

Your choice of 180 gram white vinyl or black vinyl with heavy-duty gatefold jacket and huge 18 page "zine"-style booklet with flyers, posters etc.. Original lp pressing was released in the early nineties and has long been out of print as well as highly sought after . ALL HAIL WINTER. RISE!!! $14 each

It's cool, though! Just as long as you get familiar.

Benefit for the Recovery in Japan
by Various Artists
Antiopic
AN012 | 2011-03-24
Benefit for the Recovery in Japan is a compilation album dedicated to the victims and survivors, their families, and the aid workers courageously struggling to deal with the aftermath of the earthquake, resulting tsunami, and nuclear emergency that occurred on March 11th, 2011 in Japan. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this compilation will go directly towards the recovery and relief effort. The album features the contributions of sixty-four artists from around the world and clocks in at nearly five hours of music.
As the crisis continues to unfold and the full scope of the disaster becomes even more apparent, our sisters and brothers in Japan face many challenges: both the immediate needs—provisions for food, water, shelter, and healthcare—as well as the long term recovery and rebuilding efforts in the impacted communities. The ripple effects of the earthquake and resulting tsunami will be felt for years to come. Benefit for the Recovery in Japan was created with the goal of providing immediate and tangible aid in the relief, recovery, and rebuilding that will take place over the coming days, months, and years.
The people of Japan need your help now, and your purchase of this music is one way to connect with and provide assistance to the people in Japan working to recover from this disaster. 100% of the proceeds from your purchase of this release will go to the Japanese emergency response organization Civic Force—thereby helping support real work happening on the ground by Japanese-based relief workers.
Benefit for the Recovery in Japan is curated by Antiopic's David Daniell and James Elliott, with invaluable assistance from Regina Greene (Front Porch Productions), Greg Davis, and Bettina Richards (Thrill Jockey). Greg Davis mastered the compilation and Sadek Bazaraa designed the cover art. This release is made possible by the generosity of Thrill Jockey and all of the artists involved.

About Civic Force: Civic Force is a Japanese not-for-profit organization that provides aid and emergency response in times of great domestic trouble in Japan. Civic Force developed from experiences learned during the Niigata Earthquake of 2004, and was established to provide faster and more effective disaster relief by cooperating closely with NGOs, the business community and government of Japan. just listening to that album by the female fronted Aussie avant-doom group Murkrat.
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/2537/acovtid141052.jpg

Pretty good downtuned stuff with haunting vox. Reckon its a bit different to most stuff in this genre. It's not what i'd call accessible but it could appeal to those who who might not normally listen to this kind of thing. Of definite appeal to who who dislike growly vox. Trying to think of something to compare it to but cant really, a bit like a female Warning maybe? But its not as in your face or quite as depressing or powerful, bit more haunting. Plus there is keyboard on it, maybe a bit of the Thergothon sound without the extreme vox. Nightwish this is not!

Here is a review on it

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 25 March 2011 01:38 (fourteen years ago)

Chicago, IL's INDIAN has posted a second preview track, "The End of Truth", taken from their Relapse debut Guiltless online now via http://www.MetalSucks.net. The band has previously posted Guiltless album opener "No Grace" via the band's MySpace and Facebook pages. Guiltless will see its North American release on April 12th (April 25th internationally) on CD, 12" vinyl, and digitally. The CD is available for pre-order now at Relapse.com and a deluxe digital edition with bonus track and digital booklet is available now at iTunes.

Guiltless was recorded at Semaphore Recordings in October with engineer Sanford Parker (UNEARTHLY TRANCE, PELICAN, MINSK, BLOODIEST). The album art, as designed by Scott Fricke, can be viewed now at http://www.IndianDoom.com.

INDIAN has announced a hometown record release show in support of Guiltless for April 9that Subterranean (2011 West North Avenue). This is a co-record release show with labelmates BLOODIEST.

Anyone heard the album?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 25 March 2011 18:34 (fourteen years ago)

This album cover certainly doesnt look like a doom album but apparently is progressive doom, and I do like this cover, so I'm gonna check it out.

Im guessing viceroy is up for some prog doom!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 26 March 2011 00:15 (fourteen years ago)

Hah do they do a doom version of Wreck of the Hesperus?
(I totally love the cover)

Threadkiller General (Viceroy), Saturday, 26 March 2011 01:38 (fourteen years ago)

Its pat walker from Warning.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 28 March 2011 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

Some interesting comments on last.fm

No, 40 Watt Sun isn't doom metal. It's slowcore made metal. Naturally, since Pat enjoys stuff like Low.

This is great, it's not doom though, it's more like Depressive Pop Metal

ok wouldn't say it was pop metal (lol) but it definitely wasn't as overwhelming as Warning. Will probably need a few more listens to sink in, but i think this album is gonna end up in my top20 of 2011 easily. If you liked Warning then you will see it as a bit of a progression, just not as heavy as Warning were.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 28 March 2011 23:40 (fourteen years ago)

40 Watt Sun dude sings like Michael Stipe imo (think I've seen this said elsewhere but I agree with it [er, obviously]) - I dig the couple of songs I've heard off the album tho

impressed with the new Indian rekkid having listened last night - iirc the first one had a biggish epic crust thing going on but this one is mainly really slow and pummelling

1000 Vults Of Nult (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 29 March 2011 12:05 (fourteen years ago)

I dont think he sounds like stipe at all. Pat Walker can actually sing for a start!!

The new Pentagram album is shockingly good. Seriously, I've never been a fan—they've only got a few truly solid songs scattered here and there in the back catalog, and not one front-to-back great album. But Last Rites is a seriously kick-ass hard rock/doom album. I'd recommend it to anyone into heavy rock, even people who've never heard of Pentagram before.

that's not funny. (unperson), Wednesday, 30 March 2011 20:06 (fourteen years ago)

I look forward to hearing it then. Maybe bobby will finally get some success?

I know those dudes in White Witch Canyon...(in reference to the Doom in June poster).. Really nice guys, great players, the guitarist, Lando is bad ass.. The drummer/singer recorded the Hellbeard record.

SeanWayne, Friday, 8 April 2011 05:36 (fourteen years ago)

I keep missing this thread. The new Gates album is very good. Slower than their last two.

(and thanks for the plug, AG!)

A. Begrand, Friday, 8 April 2011 05:40 (fourteen years ago)

In fact, word is that the bass player, Cornbread is a better guitar player than anyone in that band.. (the drummer/singer also being the guitarist/singer for Spiral Arms and formerly of Systematic)(Spiral Arms features lead guitarist Craig Locicero from Forbidden)

SeanWayne, Friday, 8 April 2011 05:43 (fourteen years ago)

Sludge Swamp news

I just wanted to say sorry for the close-down over the weekend. I was doing some work on the other site and was doing some work on this blog. This blog will close down on June 17th officially. I will announce it on our Sludge Swamp Facebook when the dot com site launches. The new Sludge Swamp will be great, but it will be different from the blog. We will still have downloads (although limited), reviews, contests, give-aways, interviews and lots of news about what is going on in the world of sludge, stoner, and doom. More about all that in the next couple months. Anyways, thanx to all of you for supporting the Sludge Swamp and we'll see you here until June 17th.

From Pharaoh Overlörd's album Out of darkness (2011)

Finnish independent recording artists Pharaoh Overlord, who have been working on the dark side of post rock for a decade, have taken a sharp, unexpected turn into the heart of true heavy metal, making the Ektro slogan New Wave of Finnish Heavy Metal come to life in a way that no other Ektro artist has ever pulled off. A blazing journey through guitar shredding face ripping true blue heavy metal as shards of steel blast from your speakers. Features guest vocals from US hard rock outfits Night Horse and Angus Khan.

Anyone heard this?

Loon - Loon

somewhere between doom, 90s indie rock and spacey psych... weird stuff. def worth a listen.

Witchy doomy heaviness from Rhode Island, home of ultra avant doom heavies The Body, electro rockers Six Finger Satellite, spastic hyper noiserock duo Lightning Bolt, and hardcore legends Dropdead, among others, but female fronted doom rockers Loon have way more in common with the current crop of heavies like Jex Thoth, The Devil's Blood, Sub Rosa, Blood Ceremony, Cauchemar, Christian Mistress and Purple Rhinestone Eagle, and fans of any of those bands will definitely dig Loon's stonery psychedelic grooves, and pop flecked Sabbathy doominess, but Loon definitely have their own take on that sounds, beyond the doom aspect, which is really pretty minimal, sure it IS doomy, but it's way more groovy, there's also a serious slowcore vibe going on, a downer pop woven into the group's more metallic heaviness, which ends up reminding us of a way heavier more traditionally metal True Widow, which is totally NOT a bad thing. And then there's the vocals, which are amazing, slipping from demonic screech, to sweet melodious croon, powerful and intense, and often reminding us of country chanteuse Neko Case surprisingly enough. So if you can imagine Neko Case singing for a Sabbathy doomy downer pop stoner metal combo, well then, you might have an idea of what Loon has going on. And while the vocals might be the best we of the bunch, in terms of actually singing, the songs are pretty fantastic too, spacey and psychedelic, groovy and heavy, a little bit proggy, super hooky, with just enough pop, the guitar sound buzzy and crunchy, the drums powerful, the whole sound hooky and heavy, doomy and sort of dreamy at the same time.
After a gorgeous hazy bit of psychedelic acoustic guitar, the record finishes with the nearly 10 minute "Grackel" which is the perfect Loon track, mixing all the various elements, the Neko Case like vocals (sounding surprisingly twangy here!), the shrieked demonic howls, the groovy Sabbathy riffage, the super melodic poppiness, the dirgey slowcore, all culminating in a woozy washed out feedback drenched spacey psychedelic outro, that could have (and probably SHOULD have) gone on for ANOTHER 10 minutes. Definitely a new favorite. Anyone into ANY of the above mentioned bands should for sure check this out.
The packaging is incredible too. The vinyl is black and green swirled, and is housed in an elaborate silkscreened fold out cover, green and metallic gold, a skeletal soldier wreathed in flowers, beneath the groups's tendril-y root-like logo, includes several inserts and a download code!

Dr. Suggestban, or How I Learned to Stop etc. (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 25 April 2011 20:44 (fourteen years ago)

OK, so I was listening to that Beast In The Field clip and then some other stuff of theirs I downloaded and went crazy last night and bought all four of their albums. I'm not sure what distinguishes this from so many other stoner / doom bands, exactly, but I've totally fallen in love with this band. Can't put my finger on why, but something about these tunes - and yes, I said 'tunes' - really gets me. Awesome, awesome stuff. Thanks, roxy!

Still not feeling Loon at all. Then again, "Acid King-meets-Warpaint," while spot-on, does not sound like something I would ever want to check out, anyway.

Anyone digging Across Tundras? They bill themselves as being for fans of Nail Young and Neurosis, which I guess sorta makes sense, even though I don't hear a whole lotta Shakey going on. Still, been really into these guys today - hard to pin down. Stony but not stock. Not Desert Sessions style, but not too far off from that. They're from Denver but recently relocated to Nashville. New one is on Neurot. Previous albums on the same label as Beast In The Field (upthread) which is how I discovered these dudes. Anybody?

Blood Ceremony released an album back in March, Living with the Ancients. I read about flipping thru Quietus reviews, but am just now listening to it. It's really really good; one of my favorite from this year so far. Has a real black-magic classic rock vibe, like the first Witch album, but it also can be grouped in with other female-fronted doom bands like Subrosa or Loon. Add to that a healthy dose of Zeppelin/Jethro Tull ca. 1971 (loads of amazing flute-work on this album).

I've heard zero mention of this in the twelve different rolling '2011 albums' threads: has anybody else out here listened to this yet?

That Cosmic Dead album is pretty great. Spacerock with a side of doom. And maybe a little drone on top. Hawkwind with fewer amphetamines perhaps.

F/i - Paradise Out Here (Human/Lexicon Devil) 89
F/i - Space Mantra (RRR/Lexicon Devil) 88
F/i - Why Not Now?...Alan! (RRR/Lexicon Devil) 87
F/i - Blue Star (RRR/Lexicon Devil) 90

Since stumbling upon them on the Aquarius site before I paid a visit to the store, just a couple blocks from my friend's house in SF, I've been absorbing everything I can find. Just blown away this band has been lurking about so close (Milwaukee) half my life and I didn't know it. I also have albums from 2003 and 2005, but haven't listened thoroughly yet. In the early 90s I saw an amazing show with Helios Creed performing with Hawkwind in Mpls. F/i could very well have been the opening act, I don't remember. If they didn't, they fucking should have.

Acrimony - Tumuli Shroomaroom (Leaf) 1996
I can't believe I never heard this until this week. It would have filled a gaping rock shaped hole in my life at the time, that was almost but not quite fulfilled by Kyuss, Acid Bath, Electric Wizard and Neurosis.

Elder - Dead Roots Stirring (MeteorCity) Oct 25
ATH is selling it now. If it's a pre-order it's not clear. I've been listening to a leak nonstop all week, can't get enough. A big leap from their first album, and will keep me happy until the next Ufomammut.

Sleestak - The Fall Of Altrusia (Sleestak)
Another Milwaukee band. I have last year's Skylon Express which holds enough promise that I ordered this one unheard. Don't have it yet, but here's a slavering rave on Doomantia.

Colour Haze - She Said (Elektrohasch)
Original release date of Sep 6 was delayed 'til at least late October. I corresponded with Stefan and he had an equipment issue while mixing that caused a delay, but is going well. Can't wait to hear it. Meanwhile I'm enjoying their Dutch baby brother band's second album, Sungrazer, Mirador. Immensely.

been wanting to check out Colour Haze for a little bit now; if they have a new abum coming out, maybe that'll be my chance--Ratfucker has played the Sungrazer album in outloud, but I haven't done any in-depth listening yet...

another album Ratfucker has played from in the outloud room that's turning out to be really good is this:

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h279/juicyfrt/cover.jpg

a beguiling mix of demonic doom riffs (a la Witch or Blood Ceremony), garagey fuzz, and snotty, spacey harmonies. It's killer stuff.

"You're such a species-ist." (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 20 September 2011 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

also fastnbulbous, if you really love F/i, then you should check out:

1) the Sungod album in the original post
2) ST 37's older stuff, esp. Glare--that's p hard to find though. The Insect Hospital is on Spotify, though.

Neither of them are as droney as F/i, but they both are fresh takes on space-rock.

"You're such a species-ist." (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 20 September 2011 15:09 (fourteen years ago)

I'll check 'em out, thanks! I emailed the link for my Colour Haze sampler to you.

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 20 September 2011 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

Richard Franecki of F/i has recorded several records under his own name as well as Vocokesh which you might want to check out. And in the Hawkwind vein, you might want to give Farflung a listen, though as I recall, the quality level between records could sometimes vary.

Matt M., Tuesday, 20 September 2011 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

yeah Vocokesh are fantastic. You guys really need to check out the band Electric Moon

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Blood Lust (One of the best rock albums this year)

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 20 September 2011 21:18 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks for the Elder and Sungazer recommends, really enjoying those

Brakhage, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

Ive not been picking up much outside the southern lord stable recently but I can recommend the Gigan record, its probably the most intensely mindbending metal record Ive ever heard

straightola, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

yeah that Uncle Acid is cool, it's weird but somehow to my ears the vocalist kind of has a Lennon-ish nasal thing going on that's odd but really cool, def. has a more 60s feel than most doom- it's like he's going for the Ozzy tone but instead it reminds me of Plastic Ono Band era stuff from Lennon- does anybody else hear what I mean?

black metal version of "the boy with the thorn in his side" (Edward III), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:04 (fourteen years ago)

most things usually go on the rolling metal thread. this thread is more for stuff that gets lost on there or not spoken about on it.

Originally it started on the metal board that existed for one day but lets not get into that :) so it got transferred over here.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

and drugs a money i keep telling you to get more vocokesh!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

played that bandcamp thing and i do believe glenn may like it

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

they're kinda weird, like rudimentary peni as an 80s sword n sorcery metal band or something

it's bob from dropdead's side project

black metal version of "the boy with the thorn in his side" (Edward III), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:15 (fourteen years ago)

I think jeff would dig it too

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 21 September 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

E3 -- if fnb bought the CD version of Space Mantra then it should have the Boy Dirt Car split LP included with it.

tune/space -- I totally feel ya! I didn't hear Lennon until you said something but those processed vocal harmonies are v 60s and make the album imo.

don't quixote me on that (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 23:15 (fourteen years ago)

Also, neither of these are 'metal' enough to go here, but if you're looking for some decent space-rock, two albums I've been digging are GNOD's In Gnod We Trust and La Big Vic's Actually

don't quixote me on that (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 September 2011 23:19 (fourteen years ago)

anything spacerock belongs here imo

F/i - Paradise Out Here (Human/Lexicon Devil) 89
"Om 21" is the best thing f/i has ever done. Love this band so much.

No question...this team fucking stinks (van smack), Thursday, 22 September 2011 13:31 (fourteen years ago)

Looks like I'll have to track down still more F/i! So much to absorb.

I hadn't had much luck with finding much stoner/doom in lossless blogs, but last week I discovered this, and am drowning in doom. http://stonerobixxx.blogspot.com/

Omega Massif, Orchid, Wiht, Amarok, Thou, Swamp Witch, Wizard Smoke, Capricorn, and much more.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 22 September 2011 14:49 (fourteen years ago)

yeah thats a good blog. Esp since sludgeswamp closed

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 22 September 2011 15:11 (fourteen years ago)

I just hit the doom metal tag on bandcamp and am swamped with choices. Currently listening to Forks of Ivory, http://forksofivory.bandcamp.com, and like it, though prefer it when there's no singing. I'm weird though, and don't have a lot of patience for a lot of doom/metal vocals.

As I said in another thread, that Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats album is just great. More on the Sabbath-y side of things, but triangulates nicely between metal, acid rock and garage.

http://malleusdelic.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/ufomammut-fall-tour.jpg%3Fw%3D450%26h%3D623

Anyone in Europe gonna see Ufomammut's fall tour? As far as I can tell, they only played in the U.S. with a one-off show in San Francisco in 2009. Perhaps because they're buds with Neurosis. Their signing to Neurot hopefully will mean a U.S. tour sometime next year.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 22 September 2011 22:35 (fourteen years ago)

It might mean their cds and lps will be cheaper!

No. Would have been a good opportunity for them though.

What am I saying, SSonic has ElWiz, Monarch and Orthodox. That's a big chunk of doom right there.

Looking forward to the Small Stone showcase on Saturday, with Gozu, Suplecs, Sasquatch, Lo-Pan and Freedom Hawk. Not sure if that's the order. I would have thought Freedom Hawk would be co-headliner, as they just released a tremendous second album, Holding On. All the bands have some solid recordings, should be a great show.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)

Not that it's nearly as good as any of the above, but The Roswell Incident's HOPING FOR A CONTACT just went up today at bandcamp.

Live set from 1997 in anticipation of perhaps future recordings should Elvis T. and ever be in the same county again.

Might even be worth the download cost of absolutely free.

I've been enjoying Causa Sui - Pewt'r Sessions Vol 1, and finally picked up Vol 2. A search in Google Reader showed that this site has their whole catalog! http://psych-rock.blogspot.com/2011/08/causa-sui-pewtr-sessions-2-2011.html

Perfect, massive dose of Colour Haze Jr. to hold me over 'til She Said comes out in just over a month!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 14:25 (fourteen years ago)

And it was really good

just now im listening to some finnish funeral doom. Some really nice melancholic piano mixed in with the heavy downtuned guitars and the vox. The finns really do rule funeral doom.

Aww, that's gonna go right to my overinflated ego, Drugs.

Digging the new Freedom Hawk album, which you can hear here: http://drdoomslair.com/2011/10/13/freedom-hawk-holding-on/

Though it could be slower and sludgier...

and less ozzy? :)

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 14 October 2011 15:15 (fourteen years ago)

remember how Sheavy used to sound like a ringer for ozzy era sabbath?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 14 October 2011 15:15 (fourteen years ago)

I suppose it's most Ozzyesque on that first track, but yes, less Ozzy would be fine.

And this is actually the first Freedom Hawk I've heard, so I don't remember that...

Matt M., Friday, 14 October 2011 15:31 (fourteen years ago)

Wasn't a huge fan of the Causa Sui, though I'm thinking about seeking out the first Pewt'r Sessions.

ge0rge (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 21 October 2011 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

I think Pewt'r Sessions are a definite improvement on the Summer Sessions. Anyone in Chicago going to see Sleestak at Cafe Lura tonight in Chicago?

I just finished an updated and expanded version of my Stoner Rock Primer that covers Sleestak at the end (and Causa Sui, and many of the bands in this thread) -- http://www.fastnbulbous.com/stoner-rock.htm

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 21 October 2011 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

fastnbulbous, I love your lists, but for the life of me I can't understand what you hear in that Ufesas album that makes you place it higher than the Cosmic Dead & Psychic Paramount albums, which are two of my top albums of the year...

Psychic Paramount is cool like if Sonic Youth took a turn in 1982, and I like the lo-fi Cosmic Dead, but I freakin' love Ufesas. Can't stop playing it. So you listened to it?

fastnbulbous - did you hear the Argus record, Boldly Strode the Doomed? Great classic metal record that caught me hook line & sinker.

The name caught my eye as it's a great Wishbone Ash album, but I did not hear it. I missed so much stuff I'm sure. Like I heard some streamed songs from Maligno - The Funeral Domine, but once I grabbed it, realized it's pretty great.

Left out the part where the streamed songs sounded like crap.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

I streamed the Maligno and assumed it was poorly recorded versions of good songs. Guess I should track down a cop and hear them as intended.

For my last post here, my final list for 2011. I spent a bunch of time looking up which ones are on Bandcamp. I bought several that way, especially the ones that are less than $10 for FLAC.
