the frank ocean album wasn't really what i was expecting. i thought it was all gonna be indie samples or something. overall it was just ok, but kinda too damn emo. the hotel california song was awful. i think this was the best track on the album

woozy and minimal in just the right way imo. no flanger, but most of the synths are reversed, and i like that descending pitch-bent sound.

maybe "amazing" is overstating it but i think it's effective.

what are you thinking of? i have most of his stuff. only thing i can think of is donna summer's 'grand illusion'. rest is pretty dancey. i think this thread was to catch up on modern r'n'b that people like lex think we're overlooking by listening to indie-ish groups like the weeknd.

i would just like to put it out there that i have listened to nothing but r'n'b for the past 2 weeks. catching up on both real and indie spectrums. stuff people thing i should be listening to. trey songz 'pp&p', ciara 'basic instinct', electric red 'how to be a lady vol 1', frank ocean 'nostalgia/ultra', how to dress well 'love remains', jeremih 'all about you', jhene aiko 'sailing souls', the dream 'love king' and a bunch of mixes of r'n'b influenced stuff. nguzunguzu, kingdom, deadboy. i have loved lots of these albums (j.aiko, dream, jeremih, ciara, electrik red). thought some of them were pretty boring (trey sonz, htdw) and sorta half half on the frank ocean. after all of this, i can say i am still a fan of the weeknd. oh well. at least i like lots more music than i did 2 weeks ago.

not going in that other thread because it's a beast and people are hardly talking about music

o, and the ty&kory mixtape which was kinda meh. 'stripclubs' is cool, but only because it reminds me of something off around the world in a day.

i think its a mistake to frame this as 'if only you had heard these first,' fwiw & def wouldnt expect that to convert you. i do think it makes an argument against this music being particularly unique tho

i don't even really think of him as part of this aesthetic, even though he's associated with main attrakionz, shlohmo, etc. his productions are a lot more technicolor.

and i don't think he's connected with a really great singer or a really great song yet, but i'm sure he will at some point. he's a talented producer who can make instrumentals that totally stand on their own, and seems to be in the process of moving toward working with more vocalists as a producer-for-hire (which is a super common trajectory these days).
