(apologies to s. trife for jacking his posting style.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 August 2002 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

That's actually a very good list. Since, you know, most lists like this are just sort of random. Except those mostly seem pretty spot-on and interesting, especially the Linkin Park and Tweet ones.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 30 August 2002 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

(oh, and unlike s. trife, yr supposed to list yr own choices for dream covers here too.

and thanks n.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 August 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 30 August 2002 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

(I like doing this because my immediate impulse is "oh oh I can't wait to go home and try to start putting together a song that actually sounds like e.g. Movietone doing 'Does this Hurt.'")

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 30 August 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I know you're not crazy about McSweeny's, Matos, but one of their issues had "covers" as a theme & I think Rick Moody covered a Chekov story ("The Egg" - wasn't that Chekov?)

I know you're not crazy about McSweeny's, Matos, but one of their issues had "covers" as a theme & I think Rick Moody covered a Chekov story ("The Egg" - wasn't that Chekov?)

I would consider any interpretation of a classic story (Hamlet, Sisyphus, etc.) a "cover."

Jody Beth Rosen, Friday, 30 August 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 30 August 2002 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

how do you know I'm not crazy about McSweeney's?

I thought you said something in a post once about "that smug clique at McSweeny's" or something like that. I remembered it because I like McSweeny's, most of the time.

Too obivous, sorry.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Friday, 30 August 2002 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I spent hours playing this game before. We came up with Oxide and Neutrino covering Joe Jackson's "Is She Really Going Out With Him?", just ahead of Nickelback doing "Rubber Ball" by Cyrkle.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 30 August 2002 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll just mention that I've read a good few literary covers - for instance modern and updated versions of classic stories: Jane Smiley redid Lear in 1000 Acres, Alice Hoffman redid Wuthering Heights, Faust has been done several times (Marlowe, Goethe, Mann), and so on. And in movies we could call The Magnificent Seven and A Fistful Of Dollars covers of Kurosawa (Seven Samurai & Yojimbo), who of course in turn covered Shakespeare twice, in Throne Of Blood (Macbeth) and Ran (Lear again). I'd rather have covers like these than the practice of pretty straight anglophone remakes of continental successes.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 30 August 2002 21:04 (twenty-three years ago)

You're right, jody beth - christina aguilera covering the buzzcocks' - "ever fallen in love" would be just wrong - instead she should cover buzzcocks - "what do i get?" and britney should do "love you more"!! (except she should retitle it "love u more" obv!!)

geeta (geeta), Friday, 30 August 2002 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

britney should do "love you more"!!

"Orgasm Addict"!

Jody Beth Rosen, Friday, 30 August 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Jimmy Eat World - "Roadrunner"
The Strokes - "Walkin on Sunshine" or The Small Faces' "Sha La La La Lee"

this is the best thread evah! i couldn't come up with anything! what does that mean?!?

mark s (mark s), Friday, 30 August 2002 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like Luke Haines to cover a Suede song. Or Morrissey to do a Cure number... Like a rockabilly "Boys dont cry" or something... Maybe even turn "Just Like Heaven" into a grandiose ballad...

Gary Glitter could do the Stranglers' "Bring on the nubiles", but that would be, er, bad taste... I'm tired, sorry!

Simon, Friday, 30 August 2002 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Back when Rothko were just three bassists I daydreamed about them doing a reverb-drenched slo-mo cover of Numan's "Cars" with vocals from Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker. I know everyone here probably wants to kill me just for the thought but I'm still not entirely convinced that it was a bad idea, even after I was put off somewhat by To Rococo Rot (another obsession of mine at the time) releasing a dreary cover of it. Anyway, Rothko these days don't sound quite like I imagined it, so even I had to give up on the dream.

Rebecca (reb), Sunday, 20 October 2002 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Today I was listening to Loveless and when "When You Sleep" came on, I couldn't stop imagining Prince singing it. And then I started clapping on the backbeat, and really wanted to dance.

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Sunday, 20 October 2002 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

But now that I think about it, I'd really like to hear, say, Boys II Men or a similarly-minded vocal R&B group tackle it.

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Sunday, 20 October 2002 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I think Prince doing it would be wonderful. Mira does a stripped-down, slightly slower version of it that's really wonderful, but your idea is far superior. :-)

Joan Jett--> Tube Snake Boogie

She already did "Tush" on "The Hit List."

But how do you top reality on a planet where Bob Dylan plays "Brown Sugar" and Dolly Parton sings "Stairway to Heaven"?

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Monday, 9 June 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The White Stripes need to cover absolutely anything by Billy Childish. Wait, that's too obvious. Alternatively, today I was singing some song thinking how much it sounded like a Childish song, but I can't remember it now. D'oh.

Haha! If true, my respect for Anastasio grows greatly. What a missed opportunity.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"'Loveless' is the best album recorded in the '90s," Anastasio said. "History will tell, and 20 years from now that album will be considered a complete classic, while a lot of the albums that are real popular today will have been forgotten."

He also plays "Only Shallow" in his solo band.

Wow, I was pretty fucking weird two and a half years ago. I have since refined my desire to hear a discofied cover of "Welcome to the Jungle" done completely a'la Gamble/Huff. That Slash echo-chamber guitar intro would sound murderous as an R&B string section.

I have also decided (thanks to a reminder of said song's existence via VH1 Classic) that The Alan Parsons Project's "Don't Answer Me" needs to be covered by the Beta Band as a proper farewell single.

one month passes...

Blonde on Blonde era Dylan doing Raspberry Beret.
Around the World in a Day era Prince doing Leopard-Skin Pillbox Hat.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Wednesday, 9 July 2025 18:47 (seven months ago)

Beyonce doing "Vienna"

I always wanted to hear a sped-up, cheesy AF house banger version of Eurthymics' "Sweet Dreams". The generic-er the better. It feels like something that should exist, but I've never found one.
