This Is the Poll Where We Decide Which Band Hugely Beloved of ILMors You Give the Least Gram of a Shit About

Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed

This list will necessarily miss out some obvious suspects on account of how I am making it up off the top of my head.

This isn't a vote for who you hate the most, really, but which artist makes you wonder why some members of our community feel the need to start a new thread about them once a week: which leaves you coldest or most struggling to see the appeal, y'see.

I left off the Beatles just because. They might play the winners, or something. Let's show people that the Poll function isn't just a throwaway novelty gimmick by making this a civilized and well-argued look at some music you couldn't give a flying one about.

i must've missed some obvious ones but i feel like i've got a lot of the main suspects here

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:23 (fourteen years ago)

oh balls i meant to put The Smiths

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:25 (fourteen years ago)

I guess Kraftwerk is just that untouchable.

The Reverend Sun Myung Goon (Pillbox), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:27 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think any of that list annoy me too much. I suspect if I'd actually heard Animal Collective it would be them tho.

Tom D has taken many months to run this thread to ground (Tom D.), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:27 (fourteen years ago)

not annoyance! stuff where you just think "why the hell do you care, i would never ever want to hear these ever again"

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:28 (fourteen years ago)

like i have a theory that some of these are the recipients of maladjusted nostalgia for young adulthood that it'd be healthier to get out of yr system and move on

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:29 (fourteen years ago)

Write-in vote for Blur

immer wieder, ralf & günther (NickB), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:31 (fourteen years ago)

why the hell do you care, i would never ever want to hear these ever again

Nah, none fall into that category. There's a few I couldn't imagine going out of my way to listen to: Radiohead, St Etienne, Kate Bush, tho I can understand their appeal

Tom D has taken many months to run this thread to ground (Tom D.), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:31 (fourteen years ago)

hate radiohead and animal collective the most but for sheer idgi befuddlement i guess it might be the fall

lex pretend, Friday, 13 May 2011 10:31 (fourteen years ago)

i pondered Blur but i wonder if this little flourish isn't more of a whimsy than a long-time ILM obsession? i expect to have another poll's worth of also-rans when this is done anyway

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:32 (fourteen years ago)

black sabbath, radiohead

Phelan Nulty (Local Garda), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:32 (fourteen years ago)

New Order - I don't hate em at all, just not that into em.

Devil Mo (dog latin), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:33 (fourteen years ago)

i think i'll probably vote New Order who i liked plenty as a young man but haven't given a bollock about since 1990. they seem so flat and uninteresting now.

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:33 (fourteen years ago)

for sheer idgi befuddlement i guess it might be the fall

I'd c+p that a hundred times but then you'd think I was being sarcastic

Ismael Klata, Friday, 13 May 2011 10:34 (fourteen years ago)

heard some animal collective songs and felt deeply alienated. don't like Sabbath but guess I can see the appeal. love most of the others

gospodin simmel, Friday, 13 May 2011 10:34 (fourteen years ago)

Other than Radiohead and Animal Collective, and maybe Steely Dan, I can't say I give THAT MUCH of a rats arse about the others. I guess I appreciate all of these rather than OMG LOVE them.

Devil Mo (dog latin), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:36 (fourteen years ago)

the fall have had such a long life, even i cant but help love the odd track here and there.
whereas animal collective et al, does abslutely nothing for me.

mark e, Friday, 13 May 2011 10:37 (fourteen years ago)

huh ?

mark e, Friday, 13 May 2011 10:38 (fourteen years ago)

ongoing Radiohead obsession is kind of weird to me cos altho i like some of what they've done and some of what they do i can't help but feel like they've been chugging thru the same shtick since Kid A.

always a bit baffled when people hotly anticipate new stuff from bands that are clearly kinda done.

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:38 (fourteen years ago)

If "a new thread once a week" is your criterion, then most of your list don't qualify. What about Oasis/Gallagher Bros. side projects (hi, Mark G!), Will the Old Ham, bloody boring Autechre etc etc...?

Jeff W, Friday, 13 May 2011 10:38 (fourteen years ago)

mark it's so i know who to SB, shhhhhhhhhh

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:38 (fourteen years ago)

Oasis defnitely nearly made it, Oldham has a smaller hardcore than these i think but kudos on the hilarious pun, nobody likes Autechre we were just winding up Whiney.

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:39 (fourteen years ago)

The realisation that Radiohead "are clearly kinda done" has only set in after King Of Limbs tbh.. Before that it felt as if they were going somewhere, but building up to it very slowly.

Devil Mo (dog latin), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:40 (fourteen years ago)

i think i'll probably vote New Order who i liked plenty as a young man but haven't given a bollock about since 1990. they seem so flat and uninteresting now.

For me, substitute The Fall for New Order

Tom D has taken many months to run this thread to ground (Tom D.), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:41 (fourteen years ago)

Oasis? Who likes them on ILM?

Devil Mo (dog latin), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:41 (fourteen years ago)

Mark G and only Mark G

Taylor Swift

Ismael Klata, Friday, 13 May 2011 10:43 (fourteen years ago)

Tie: New Order, St Etienne, Steely Dan, Black Sabbath, Fleetwood Mac, The Fall. They're all, y'know, alright, but the reverence and adoration mystifies me.

lol sickmouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:44 (fourteen years ago)

PJ Harvey and Stereolab deffo in the next wave poll.

St Et are high on my voting list. they've done some good songs but

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:56 (fourteen years ago)

Either New Order or St. Etienne, though I'm tempted to vote Steely Dan in Bimble's memory (although I think he might've started liking them)

excitebikable boy (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 13 May 2011 10:58 (fourteen years ago)

most banworthy vote is obviously Wu or Dan, right?

er i am stuck between wu-tang clan and new order. i feel like wu tang are going to win and then people in this thread are going to get called racists.

thomp, Friday, 13 May 2011 11:02 (fourteen years ago)

New Order - huge for me, but hardly listen to them any more, which is sad.
Radiohead - don't care about them now. I like the Bends
St Etienne - rubbish - my vote.
Kate Bush - love her as much as ever
Steely Dan - good fun
Black Sabbath - gods
Fleetwood Mac - was listening to Tusk this morning!
My Bloody Valentine - thrilling but do something new please
The Fall - had enough now MES, thanks.
Wu Tang Clan (including solo projects) - no interest whatsoever
Animal Collective

Dr.C, Friday, 13 May 2011 11:02 (fourteen years ago)

Animal Collective - never heard.

Dr.C, Friday, 13 May 2011 11:03 (fourteen years ago)

but then like the ghostface records from the past few years are a+ straight-up hip hop if you like straight-up hip hop so it's not really weird that people who are into that talk about them, etc

whereas, i dunno, the odds on anyone from new order releasing anything i feel like anyone ought to give half of a shit about ever again

thomp, Friday, 13 May 2011 11:04 (fourteen years ago)

Think Ned is also on the official Oasis offenders register: http://www.oasisfanatic.com/band/encyclopedia.php?initial_record=0&sort_by=r

Pavement are an egregious omission.

Stevie T, Friday, 13 May 2011 11:04 (fourteen years ago)

Fleetwood Mac obsession is kind of annoying because they are actually pretty good just not that good, also so ILM it hurts

Tom D has taken many months to run this thread to ground (Tom D.), Friday, 13 May 2011 11:04 (fourteen years ago)

Also, posters on ILM sometimes seem to be trying to outdo each other in expressing just how much of a mindblowing genius Lindsey Buckingham is

Tom D has taken many months to run this thread to ground (Tom D.), Friday, 13 May 2011 11:07 (fourteen years ago)

when was there last even a fleetwood mac thread

i feel like ppl have stopped talking about pavement now that they're a band people can go and see and stuff

da croupier, Friday, 13 May 2011 11:39 (fourteen years ago)

tom i need to rant at you about the Dan

can't help but think if you've got no interest in Wu then you've got no interest in Hip Hop which is up to you but

i guess for me this comes down to who still interests me rather than who feels completely played. and obv for different people there will be different personal circumstances that affect it but i also think that some artists sort of drop out of cultural interest, like their stuff has nothing of interest to say to us today, whether it's old or new?

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 11:41 (fourteen years ago)

Beastie Boys at the top of the ilx last.fm list? I'd totally vote for those guys...

excitebikable boy (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 13 May 2011 11:43 (fourteen years ago)

It's going to be Animal Collective. Including Pavement would be OTM but on the other hand would split the crucial "most likely to annoy Matthew Perpetua" vote.

Matt DC, Friday, 13 May 2011 11:43 (fourteen years ago)

wd have include Pavement if i'd remembered. might've included Beasties.

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 11:44 (fourteen years ago)

My Bloody Valentine, not least because they've got their own inbuilt expletive, unlike Fleetwood Fucking Mac or Black Sodding Sabbath, say.

Bloody Snail, Friday, 13 May 2011 11:44 (fourteen years ago)

i think AC might not deserve to win this cos they seem to actively annoy people who don't like them more than some of the others

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 11:45 (fourteen years ago)

Black Pudding Sabbath

immer wieder, ralf & günther (NickB), Friday, 13 May 2011 11:45 (fourteen years ago)

New Order - Have all five of their albums, plus Substance, plus the Retro box
Radiohead - Own physical versions of everything except Pablo Honey and In Rainbows, but honestly am kinda done after King of Limbs
St Etienne - Have never heard a note of this group's music, so this will probably be my vote
Kate Bush - Have only heard maybe one song ("Running Up That Hill")
Steely Dan - Have all eight albums, love/worship this band (which is why I haven't heard the more recent stuff, to avoid having my faith tested)
Black Sabbath - Gods
Fleetwood Mac - I grew up in America in the 1970s and 1980s and we owned a radio, so yes, I'm familiar - don't actually own anything by them, though
My Bloody Valentine - Heard Loveless once or twice, it did nothing for me
The Fall - Bought that 2CD best-of, it did nothing for me
Wu Tang Clan (including solo projects) - Love most of the albums (have never made it through Forever and choose to forget Iron Path) and a bunch of the early solo discs
Animal Collective - Have never heard a note of this group's music, but because they are so widely discussed by the US critics I'd most like to smash in the face with a brick (not just because of their shitty taste, but also because their writing takes up space that could be filled with my writing) (as opposed to St Etienne, who are mostly beloved of UK people whose opinions, from a professional perspective, mean nothing to me), they will be getting my vote.

that's not funny. (unperson), Friday, 13 May 2011 11:45 (fourteen years ago)

Not including Daft Punk and/or Basement Jaxx possibly an error. Also maybe Depeche Mode.

Matt DC, Friday, 13 May 2011 11:46 (fourteen years ago)

Daft Punk yes, Basement Jaxx probly, Depeche Mode i dunno i feel like the goth contingent has drifted from ILM over the last few years

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 11:47 (fourteen years ago)

anyway, gonna do another one of these next week

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Friday, 13 May 2011 11:48 (fourteen years ago)

New Order - great
Radiohead - I like them
St Etienne - pretty good, don't quite get the rapture all the time though
Kate Bush (nb please state clearly if you are voting for Kate, for administrative reasons) - bit in brackets seconded
Steely Dan - yay
Black Sabbath - I should probably listen to more really
Fleetwood Mac - big singles aside, don't care
My Bloody Valentine - okay
The Fall - meh
Wu Tang Clan (including solo projects) - great obviously but also kind of a lightning conductor for lamers
Animal Collective - honestly if you actually like a band who do things like this then there's really no hope for your aesthetic judgement at all.

Matt DC, Friday, 13 May 2011 11:57 (fourteen years ago)

I like most of these in theory but i don't really play any of them. lets see what last.fm says i haven't played anything by any of them in the last year

Total plays since i got last.fm

New Order 0 plays
Radiohead 0 plays
St Etienne 104 plays
Kate Bush (nb please state clearly if you are voting for Kate, for administrative reasons) 0 plays
Steely Dan 66 plays
Black Sabbath 0 plays
Fleetwood Mac 0 plays
My Bloody Valentine 0 plays
The Fall 17 plays
Wu Tang Clan (including solo projects) 0 plays
Animal Collective 0 plays

colby, Friday, 13 May 2011 12:00 (fourteen years ago)

New Order - used to be good but got bored with them
Radiohead - not my thing but whatever floats your boat
St Etienne - flimsy sorta band to get obsessive over
Kate Bush - bit like Bjork, appreciate the talent but wouldn't listen to it
Steely Dan - great but stop fucking going on about them
Black Sabbath - loveable scamps
Fleetwood Mac - good but stop fucking going on about them
My Bloody Valentine - good band turned slightly ridiculous by overpraise
The Fall - still going on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on
Wu Tang Clan - 's okay
Animal Collective - never heard them, almost wanted to at one time but not now

I used to dismiss Steely Dan out of ignorance but after diligently ploughing through several albums on Spotify I have to throw up my hands and admit they're one of the few canonised bands that I just don't get: at best bland, at worst actively unpleasant. The fact that many friends and musicians I respect love them just makes them more confounding to me. Except the one De La Soul sampled - that's all right.

Guess i'll go with Steely Dan but don't recall seeing any threads about them and tbh nothing on here causes me to sigh loudly if a thread appears on ILM. I didn't read the thread, but that list reads like a bunch of classic artists, which I like or dislike to varying degrees but basically understand why they all have a cult following, etc. and then... St Etienne!? wha? who the fuck are they and why would they be on that list? Aren't they like some third rate shoegaze also-rans or something? I think maybe they sound like Lush or something equally forgettable and "lol 90s UK".

Steven Tyler the Creator (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 13 May 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

I'm just saying, in the spirt of the thread, they're not really on my radar. I listened to a song on youtube, and I recognized it, so they must have been played on US "alternative" radio in the '90s but I don't see how they really stand out from anything else. I think I connected them with Lush because a friend in HS was into both bands, but the connection still makes sense. Like if I think of shoegaze I think JAMC, MBV, and then Lush would be way down the list as like some later, poppier development that wasn't very interesting and didn't hold up in the long run. I'm not really interested in the whole UK dance/pop/rock thing of that era, but when I think about it I think, say, Happy Mondays, or Primal Scream. I don't really get how St Etienne is still remembered or considered important or anything.

The comparison to Animal Collective really makes no sense to me at all. Please explain.

geir was right (wk), Friday, 13 May 2011 18:51 (fourteen years ago)

apart from my dislike of animal collective, they just seem much more like niche-audience also-rans than st etienne.

I like all these artists to some degree but The Fall are probably the one whose hardcore cult following I have the most difficulty understanding.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 13 May 2011 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

apart from my dislike of animal collective, they just seem much more like niche-audience also-rans than st etienne.

The only St Etienne song I recognize is a cover, and their overall sound seems kind of like new jack swing + stereolab? Is that fair? Was that big in the UK? Did they inspire a bunch of other bands or something? I don't know I just find it puzzling.

Animal Collective just seems so much more obviously polarizing. I think they're brilliant and yet I can see why people would hate them, which is kind of the perfect recipe for a cultlike following. But I guess some people are just kind of "meh" about them? That puzzles me. There are a ton of bands that I like who I could understand other people thinking they're just kind of blah and forgettable, so I don't exactly mean this as any kind of a dis.

geir was right (wk), Friday, 13 May 2011 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

I like all these artists to some degree but The Fall are probably the one whose hardcore cult following I have the most difficulty understanding.

Really? See that's what I'm getting at. Regardless of what you think of the Fall they're obviously kind of off-putting, kind of different, have a billion releases, they're easily hateable, all of which is like the textbook recipe for a cult following.

geir was right (wk), Friday, 13 May 2011 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

Radiohead vs. St. Etienne for me, I have never consciously listened to a song by either.

St Etienne are big here because they're the best journalists ever got at doing music

Ismael Klata, Friday, 13 May 2011 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't heard Animal Collective, and nothing I've read about them makes me the least bit curious, so I guess them. Out of the stuff I have heard, it's a 50:50 between St Etienne (I always found the acclaim these got to be baffling, I find them bland and not even slightly compelling) and the fall (I used to really dig this band but I reached a point a few years ago where I felt like I'd heard them enough times)

Letzte Tage - Letzte Pächmina (Pashmina), Friday, 13 May 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

Really? See that's what I'm getting at. Regardless of what you think of the Fall they're obviously kind of off-putting, kind of different, have a billion releases, they're easily hateable, all of which is like the textbook recipe for a cult following.

From a 2011 perspective, yeah - though I'd say my bafflement is more to do with the Cult of Mark E Smith than their actual music (I mean I'm surprised people still like their albums so much too but obviously loads of bands who stick around have loyal fans so fair enough). He's a funny guy at times but I'm genuinely surprised more people aren't tired of him by now.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 13 May 2011 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

the time to be tired of MES was in the mid 90s; his career has hit a full-fledged second wind at this point that afaic is p much unparallelled...

also, Lush rules.

excitebikable boy (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 13 May 2011 20:12 (fourteen years ago)

also, I keep reading abt how St. Et was some sort of weird great Northern Soul/dub + melodica hybrid, but the only stuff I heard from them (in the old top singles of the 90s poll here) basically makes them sound like a blander British Ace of Base...

excitebikable boy (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 13 May 2011 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

I mean, St. Et are twee as fuck, so you have to be cool with that, but, that said, "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" is a red herring in terms of the diversity of their overall sound. To get a better sense of what all the fuss is about, DAM etc., you could do a lot worse than investigating their second album, So Tough

The Reverend Sun Myung Goon (Pillbox), Friday, 13 May 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

blander British Ace of Base...

Haha, yeah. I was thinking Cardigans.

Mark E Smith is such a character, I don't know, it seems inevitable that he would attract a cult following. Like with all of the artists in the poll I could write a one sentence description that would explain why they have a cult following, but I don't get what St Etienne's hook was. I would be interested to see if somebody could explain though. I feel like there's probably some kind of context I'm missing beyond just "they had a bunch of hits."

What was the American equivalent to St Etienne? Is there an American band that had a bunch of hits in the '90s that never caught on in the UK, but that still has a loyal fanbase among ILMors?

And I'm not saying that Lush wasn't great. I'm not even saying that St Etienne wasn't great! Just, you know, Black Sabbath great? Really?

geir was right (wk), Friday, 13 May 2011 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

LCD Soundsystem are the American St Etienne and should also be on this poll

Ismael Klata, Friday, 13 May 2011 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

the poll grouping concerns not the objective canonical "greatness" of these bands, but the relative high regard in which they're held on ILM. In this sense, St. Etienne fits in just fine.

The Reverend Sun Myung Goon (Pillbox), Friday, 13 May 2011 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

excitebikable boy (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 13 May 2011 20:33 (fourteen years ago)

Cardigans def built on the St. Etienne template (and themselves released a few decent records, some might say..)

No, I understand that. It was my answer to the poll's question of "most struggling to see the appeal". They definitely fit in the poll if they're held in high regard on ILM. I just never knew they had a following, and didn't even notice there was one here on ILM because as I said they're just completely not on my radar.

hippy borthday, free wings for u (Matt P), Friday, 13 May 2011 20:50 (fourteen years ago)

New Order - huh? when? i see 4 joy division mentions for every 1 new order
Radiohead - imho not a favorite, but i think any discussion is merit-able. they're certainly an adventurous band, one that i think whole-heartedly tries to both progress their own music into the future as well as hold hands with their listeners in serving as introductories. but fuck that newspaper album.
St Etienne - seriously... i can't think of the last time i've seen a st. etienne mention on here, ever. i think the one time any discussion even occured over them was whether they knew more people who spelled it as "saint" versus just "st." or not.
Kate Bush - deserves it
Steely Dan - that hot-dog man album was cool but otherwise i don't give a shit
Black Sabbath - never listened to a thing
Fleetwood Mac - incredible band, but in a lot of ways i use them to cite as an example as to why the deconstructionism of punk came into existence in the first place. things were just a little ~too perfect~
My Bloody Valentine - admittedly love them ad infinitum. i'm even a member of the desolate official fan forum, where new posts only arise when another pissed-off yob has shit to say about amazon pushing the remaster's release back.
The Fall - seminal, but truly don't give a shit. sonic youth & pavement did better jobs. the keyboardist is sexi, tho.
Wu Tang Clan (including solo projects) - a band i listened to in high-school. i don't want to go back there.
Animal Collective - love these guys, but not sure i can tolerate much more of them.

Things Your Parents Say/Said About Music

My dad on The Fall: "This is the kind of music that musicians enjoy playing but no one wants to hear."

My aunt recently divulged that my mom really enjoyed some songs by The National that I listened to while I was home this summer, was afraid to say anything in case it scared me out of liking them.

no, i think i said earlier here that it's the very defn of a blind spot for me - i don't get it or understand it in any way but i kind of respect it for doing its thing? even if i find it unlistenable? whereas w/a lot of indie i do understand it and can therefore dismiss it (and it's also unlistenable). i was surprised you do!

xp

hillybilly death worship (absolutely clean glasses), Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:13 (fourteen years ago)

i think radiohead are probably the act here that i find most oppressive - with animal collective there are enough haters that i can ally with (see: most of the singles jukebox rightly laying into them), and they really don't seem important or a big deal in any way outside of their little niche. most of the others, their glory days are really obviously behind them and you don't actually see them being discussed in a way such that it takes over all yr social networks. kate bush does but i love her so it's ok. radiohead do and it's like...even now you feel you can't get away from it, and that people just ignore or don't take seriously any dissent from the party line that they're gods or something

fuck radiohead fuck radiohead fuck radiohead forever

lex pretend, Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:18 (fourteen years ago)

i think maybe the underlying link with this lot are "bands one is amazed still have currency in 2011", but the exceptions to that ought to be Kate because she's still doing great work, Wu to an extent cos of the solo stuff they're still making, and AC just cos they seem to be an ongoing creative concern even if that creative endeavour is mostly objectively horrible.

wanking on the moon (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:37 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I was thinkin along similar lines (xpost to lex). and honestly I think I find animal collective's overall aesthetic more palatable than radiohead's. they've never released anything that I think is as terribly hamfisted as shit like "karma police." but I think I might have already have voted for animal collective just because they haven't released any songs I ~actually kinda dig~

hillybilly death worship (absolutely clean glasses), Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:38 (fourteen years ago)

panda bear is an EVEN WORSE singer than thom yorke - i think objectively i would actually prefer to hear radiohead? urgh

lex pretend, Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:50 (fourteen years ago)

bands one is amazed still have currency in 2011

i think the diff between radiohead, kate, wu-tang and AC (and maybe the fall?) vs the others is that the others' currency is v nostalgia based - people get excited about their old stuff and when they come back to play live rather than pretending their new material is still relevant

lex pretend, Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:52 (fourteen years ago)

Aren't Wu Tang Clan largely about an album from 1993? The album Radiohead released in 1993 (well, 1992) was their debut, which is not considered to be a great album by hardly anyone...

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 14 May 2011 09:44 (fourteen years ago)

New Order - really like a couple of songs, not really my thing though
Radiohead - used to adore them, now I struggle to get anything out of their music
St Etienne - definitely an example of these luxurious descriptions (Pop! Dub! Exotica! Indie!) not really corresponding with the actual content. Will always love He's On The Phone and the Good Humor album though
Kate Bush - love her, a continually rewarding artist who my appreciation of keeps growing
Steely Dan - tried very hard to get into them, didn't work, perfectly listenable though, and I love 'Dirty Work' from the first album
Sabbath - not my thing. Incredible sounding guitars though. Led Zep were tighter, catchier and better in every way.
Fleetwood Max - So much brilliance, although Tusk is overrated on here
My Bloody Valentine - erstwhile favourite band, Loveless is still pretty great
The Fall - impressive, but have to really try hard/make allowances to enjoy them
Wu Tang - ehh hip-hop
Animal Collective - loved them when they were fierce/wilder, likable now if slightly dull

Voted Radiohead, because they make me feel nothing, while countless music fans swoon. Nothing I tell you!

Davek (davek_00), Saturday, 14 May 2011 11:40 (fourteen years ago)

Like the big famous singles, have not found anything I liked as much when investigating further:
New Order, St Etienne, Kate Bush, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac

Liked once, don't give a toss abt anything they've done for the past decade, don't listen to the old stuff much any more either:
The Fall (though I still have an occasional binge), Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine

Quite like their music, have to pretend their image and imitators don't exist:
Animal Collective; also this is the category Radiohead were in 10 years ago

Should really hear more by/not a hardcore fan of but can't think of anything bad to say about: Wu Tang, Sabbath

Well, that didn't help at all!

I guess MBV are the band whose second coming reputation seems most out of proportion to the one LP it's built upon, but could also vote Dan (cz unlike the others in the first category I only really like "Peg", and even that always leaves my mind completely about 20 seconds after ending), or Radiohead, for having moved through at least two of the less positive categories here

don't get me wrong, Wu Tang is responsible for some of the most undeniably great rap songs of all time, and i bump that shit when i hear it. but they're not very central to my taste in rap like they are for a lot of people.

I may be banned but I'm perfectly good at it (some dude), Saturday, 14 May 2011 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

and i mean, i put them in the same category as Fleetwood Mac and Black Sabbath, i consider them hugely and justifiably important, they're just not necessarily my favorites beyond the occasional jam here and there

I may be banned but I'm perfectly good at it (some dude), Saturday, 14 May 2011 14:51 (fourteen years ago)

animal collective are a strange case of a band i think have actually got better with each album, concurrent to their image and hype growing increasingly odious and unbearable as time has gone on. i can only stand them in a cursory, arms-length kind of way.

as far as the list goes i like everything in varying degrees, but flooding adulation towards st. etienne is something i probably can't see any foundation in. so there's my vote, i guess.

i'd like to see talking heads, can and kraftwerk in the next poll. love those bands unconditionally, but would be curious to see how others go about picking their qualities and virtues apart.

charlie h, Saturday, 14 May 2011 15:55 (fourteen years ago)

maybe roxy music could go on the next poll too.

charlie h, Saturday, 14 May 2011 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

St Et are high on my voting list. they've done some good songs but

^^this. i don't have a negative opinion of them, i just care about them the least of the artists mentioned. i don't hate animal collective either, but they'd be my second pick.

wacky onassis (get bent), Saturday, 14 May 2011 16:26 (fourteen years ago)

New Order: Generally like although I am not a giant fan of them.
Radiohead: Love "OK Computer" to pieces, also like "The Bends" a lot. Not that impressed by the rest of their works although they have always had their moments.
St Etienne: Good, but not as good as Pet Shop Boys, a band I feel it is natural to compare them to (Why no PSB in this poll btw?)
Kate Bush: Love most of her output. Wouldn't even dream of voting for her in this case.
Steely Dan: Ditto as Kate Bush. Particularly "Aja" and "Gaucho" are really genius works.
Black Sabbath: Not a fan of heavy/hard rock in particular, but Black Sabbath I like more than most representatives of the genre.
Fleetwood Mac: I do find them a tad overrated here, but they are fully OK and all that. Other than the Peter Green phase, which has never impressed me much. While they may be overrated "Tango In The Night" is underrated.
My Bloody Valentine: Never understand what the fuzz was all about (pun intended). There are so many better guitar indie bands from the British isles out there.
The Fall: Just can't stand Mark E. Smith's horrible vocals. Never quite got what is so important or great about them.
Wu Tang Clan: Probably not any worse than other hip-hop, but other than G-funk, hip-hop generally doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. And I have particular problems with understanding the appeal of Wu Tang.
Animal Collective: Actually never quote got them either. There are many better neo-psych bands out there, who are less extreme than them.

because in the grand scheme of things, none of this matters one iota. what does any of us want? to make the world a better, a more beautiful place. to weave our nets of fantasy, to banish the cobwebs of dead ideas and the shadows of beliefs that man must overcome if we are ever to fashion the world into a space worthy of inhabitation. to float like a gadfly and sting like a B-52. to take the lego bricks down one by one, then throw the whole pile into the air and, even as they fall, to gesture vainly and say "this, this is life". to MAKE IT NEW, every day, in every possible way. to reach out and touch the effighy of somebody you love, and to burn the hated simulacrum of the policeman of the world behind us. this. sir, this is ilx

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

The only one among these I really care about is the Wu-Tang Clan. K. Bush and New Order have some great songs too, but I've never really been "into" them. Some of these are totally unknown to me: I've never heard any song by My Bloody Valentine, St. Etienne, or Animal Collective. So I gotta for The Fall: I've only heard two or three songs by them, by they seem to exemplify the utter lack of any musical skills that was one of the worst aspects of punk. In some other thread someone said to me that their point is really the lyrics, but who cares about lyrics if their delivered by the worst vocalist I've ever heard?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 07:55 (fourteen years ago)

i think Tuomas may like Saint Etienne?

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 14:07 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

No surprises here, with the least "hugely beloved" band winning this.

...wow! (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 23:02 (fourteen years ago)

i freely admit casting SBs for kate bush hate~

omar little, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

I freely admit welcoming to heaven the Animal Collective skeptics.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

Voting numbers are through the roof!

So so glad Kate Bush ended last in this one

Can't believe Steely Dan/the Fall/Wu-tang all got more votes than New Order...

Hope Santa fills all your stockings w/ Frente & Orgy albums

pax raggetta (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 02:58 (fourteen years ago)

i'll take st et at #2 (and attribute it to their really being a british-interest thing) just for the correct other two acts in the top 3

makes me so happy that 77 people on this board do not give a shit about animal collective and/or radiohead

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 07:29 (fourteen years ago)

this was a brilliant thread, really made me think.

Suggest Banter (Local Garda), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 08:43 (fourteen years ago)

tho I must concede I too lost a few nights sleep wondering which other acts potentially could have been deemed "hugely beloved by ILM", or questioning the validity of those deemed so by their inclusion on this list.

will remember these times when i'm old.

Suggest Banter (Local Garda), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 08:53 (fourteen years ago)

does anyone want a debate about other potential inclusions on this list? I feel we have more enlightening and edifying discussions to come.

Suggest Banter (Local Garda), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 09:02 (fourteen years ago)

next time i'll just do the "STFU New Order" thread and have done

Deeez Nuuults (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 09:10 (fourteen years ago)

haha sorry nv...not attacking you specifically...

How many people is that?
Maybe we need a "return the favour" vote.

Mark G, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 09:22 (fourteen years ago)

Don't get the Kate Bush love-in thing at all

LOL. I know it's a joke an' all but all those I'll SB if you vote Katey-Watey, you wouldn't say that, even in jest, about Dylan or Leonard Cohen or Lou Reed or some other similar old fart

for some reason.

Deeez Nuuults (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 09:53 (fourteen years ago)

this was a brilliant thread, really made me think.

almost as much as yr needless snark

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 10:17 (fourteen years ago)

Sorry for being a jerk guys; I hope you get good CDs for Christmas...

pax raggetta (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 10:25 (fourteen years ago)

i think all of us are regularly positive about enough great music on ilm without having to take snark for a bit of healthy negativity now and then from people who never seem to show their faces in the threads we're positive in.

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Wednesday, 25 May 2011 10:27 (fourteen years ago)

i didn't vote but even though ostensibly i like them i kind of never want to hear new order again

colby, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 10:41 (fourteen years ago)

I'm just glad Fleetwood Mac didn't get more votes
