The Funkystepz bit starts off about 29mins into that podcast, by the way. There's a clear demarcation so I might cut off the opening section and upload it to save people skipping/slogging through it.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 10:40 (fourteen years ago)
But have you listened to it Matt! I want reax please.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 10:42 (fourteen years ago)
Sets like this and the Ill Blu ones feel a bit like gorging on all the icing and none of the cake, but on the other hand mmmm sugar.
Tim I think you might be overselling it a bit with the Kish Kash comparison but it definitely feels like there's a bit of a sonic leap between the stuff here that seems to have been around forever and the newer material. Same Lego brick approach to funky but somehow more... muscular? British dance music in general seems to be getting more beat-em-up soundtrack so it fits right in, albeit for a very colourful cartoonish beat-em-up.
Also that New Boyz remix is just wow. They're even better as pop remixers than original producers IMO, the way they pitch everything up into chipmunk vocals works really well with autotune pop - see also the Rude Boy remix. The Equiknoxx remix threatens to go a bit Henry's Cat Riddim but I like it.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 10:45 (fourteen years ago)
(xpost - that do you?)
In fairness that detuned "oh oh oh oh" vocal in "Girls Go Wild" (which is almost exactly like the same trick in "Lucky Star") may be overdetermining my Basement Jaxx comparison.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 10:58 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah I think if the mix corresponds to anything on Kish Kash its the kind of Tazmanian Devil energy of Lucky Star rather than the rest of it.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 11:05 (fourteen years ago)
woah this is insane

Just letting you guys know 'Trouble' & 'Girls Go Wild' are going to be out on Hypderdub!
Our next release will be 'Our Love' (alongside 'No More' both featuring Rhian Moore) a summer track which is a cross between UKG & Funky you can listen back on Cameos show here http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b011j6j6#synopsis
We also refixed a couple of tracks from our previous EPs, Trinity Hills, Malibu, Bubbly and more so 'The Refix EP' will be out too, although this isnt a one of our main releases it should interest djs :)
At this moment im unaware of all 3 release dates but ill keep u updated!

RENAY WHEN ARE YOU GUYS RELEASING 'LOVERS'!! we love that one round here
also is 'rude girl' on the refix ep cos that's a personal fave too
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 16:23 (fourteen years ago)
'Rudeboy' isn't as its unofficial however now you've said that ill add the instrumental! So as it stands its refixes of Trinity Hills, Bubbly, Loca Moca, Rudeboy, Malibu and one more which ill keep a secret :p
'Lovers' would defiantly need a remix with it, as i feel the beat is dated...love her vocals on it though! ill see whats happening with that too! but it will be defiantly after the 3 releases mentioned in my previous post
― RenayFunkystepz, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 18:06 (fourteen years ago)
haha wow, dunno about "dated"... if you mean just in terms of the ravey 90s piano riff then i'd say that was a big part of what makes the track so enjoyable. and it's not like that vibe ever really gets a bad response anyway? (especially not in funky circles but beyond that too.)
course i wouldnt have anything against additional mixes...
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 19:02 (fourteen years ago)
oh yeah and with 'rude girl' i was thinking of this one instrumental refix of the 'rude boy' remix that maxsin played a couple of times round the middle of last year - it was kinda pretty much the same but you guys added loads of big swooning synth choruses and tropical steel pan stuff?
to be honest i'm going from dim memory here cos i've lost the radio rip of it i made - it's a good memory though!
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 1 June 2011 19:11 (fourteen years ago)
Renay,
1) Congrats on running it so hard at the moment
2) Everything about "Lovers" is perfect, please release in its OG form (though additional mixes are fine)
3) What is going on with "WARRIOR", aka certified banger for the ages?

yeah that one's another masterpiece
like you assume it's only doing one thing, that it's looping somewhere, but there's just constant mindboggling everything going on simultaneously
especially of late their stuff feels so uniquely alive and organic and careering around wildly but somehow never quite losing control
― r|t|c, Friday, 17 June 2011 15:31 (fourteen years ago)
Spot on. The backseat breakdown is ridic. I like how their increasingly staged production style has all these little resemblances to but difference from ill blu. Ill Blu use breakdowns to push the tune higher, but for funkystepz the breakdown is the moment when the tune eats itself.

Some hot new Funkystepz tunes on this Smoove Kriminal / Maxsin Funkystepz set:
http://smoovekriminal.podomatic.com/player/web/2011-07-01T06_11_43-07_00
"Class A" is super compulsive. "Royal Rumble" is actually insane, like someone should slap them for the cheek of it. Dead center between "Warrior", the Jim Screecha remix and a computer having an epileptic fit. "Fizzy" is yr typical jittery funkystepz party vibes only with added percussive hi-jinx.
These dudes really do have too many killer tracks.
― Tim F, Thursday, 21 July 2011 11:41 (fourteen years ago)
^ Tim where did you get the tracklist for that? Is it on the Deja site? Some great Funkystepz bits that I hadn't heard before on there anyway. Actually the show as a whole had a lot going for it I think - I remember last year really enjoying Smoove Kriminal's shows, but in the last few months I've found it hard to listen to them because long stretches of them just seem very dull to me. This felt more like... maybe not a full return to form but def a step back in the right direction.

yeah, i was in the same boat and i agree the sets are sounding pretty good right now. guess it's just the serendipity of funky moving more in smoove's general direction this year but with him uninterested in the deep moody boring set building that marcus does so it stays light

they've never acted like mixing was the slightest part of their game tbf.
idk if i can really claim that petchy set is worth putting up with that tosser at the start for, really basic and dare i say halfhearted selection. petch doesnt care about funky at all.
― r|t|c, Thursday, 20 October 2011 19:08 (fourteen years ago)
although whats that track at the end ? v decent.
― r|t|c, Thursday, 20 October 2011 19:11 (fourteen years ago)
The best thing about the Petchy set is Shantie's new rhymes.
Downloading the Funkystepz now.
― Tim F, Thursday, 20 October 2011 20:02 (fourteen years ago)
I was disapointed Petchy kinda fell off and went all regular house, when he spins the funky bits he still has a good vibe going though. Plus his MCs are the best when it comes to riding funky for me. No idea why he just kinda dropped off like that.
The Funkystepz mix from Boiler Room yp thread prob... he sounded a lot tighter in the mix.
I'm feeling that last track too, can't place it right now though.
― jimitheexploder, Thursday, 20 October 2011 20:03 (fourteen years ago)
Hehe there's a few shaky moments in the Funkystepz mix for sure.I kind of agree that the MCs are the main strength of the Petchy set and that tune-wise it only really comes alive for the last few.

this is fantastic. almost overwhelmingly so! perhaps not something best listened to lying in bed wearing headphones.
how much funkystepz stuff is officially out there, as opposed to being on mixes here and there?

Heaps! They've really addressed this issue over the past 18 months or so with a series of EP releases. Plus most of their remixes are officially released.
Royal Rumble EP out next month! Finally I will have "Warrior" (and the title track) in full.

how about LOVERS?
― moullet, Monday, 27 February 2012 23:17 (thirteen years ago)
One of them intimated on another thread here that they're unlikely to release it now :-(
I think they're kinda over that 2009-ish rolling snares sound, they think it's dated or something.
A shame, as it's their finest vocal tune!!
― Tim F, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 00:34 (thirteen years ago)
i like the fact that they're releasing things but their mixes are astonishing.. the guest mix @ fireworks is my favorite by them, so high energy
― moullet, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 01:53 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah I think increasingly their sound is boiling down to <ridiculously colourful and convoluted hopskotch patterns around a 4X4 groove> such that itheir tunes sound best piled together in two minute stretches one after the other, rather than in discrete 5 minute settings.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 02:04 (thirteen years ago)
I really enjoy Funkystepz, I think they're some of the best producers aroiund today, not just in UK Funky, but in any genre. It's almost ridiculous how many good tunes they have, and they continue to put out a steady stream of great mixes, EPs, remixes, and refixes. Just check out the tracklisting for the Royal Rumble EP: http://soundcloud.com/funkystepzuk/funkystepz-royal-rumble-ep. That's four certified bangers right there!

Some Funkystepz bits and peices. First, Royal Rumble EP's out April 2nd. Second, found this on soundcloud, it's short and sweet vocal track, unfinished, but still good: http://soundcloud.com/tizzy-k/tizzy-go-high-ft-funkystepz. I also wanted to mention Scufizzer. Scrufizzer was one of the original members of Funkystepz, they've done a couple of collabrations with him, and plan and doing more. Some of you have probably heard Fizzy Flow, produced by Renay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bgYwvLthyM . I heard this on DJ Target's show, I could only find this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLgIvobZlKA. These tracks are heavy and grimey, but still have that bubbly. effervescent Funkystepz sound, and Scrufizzer is talented enough to not be overwhelmed by their beats.
― Astrochimp32, Saturday, 3 March 2012 06:45 (thirteen years ago)
Almost forgot. Their remix of Drake's "Motto" is up for download on their soundcloud, it's quite good! Does anyone know where I can hear "Lovers". I've heard it hyped up a lot on this thread, but I got into Funky after Funkystepz had their Rinse.FM show, so I've never gotten to hear this fabled track. If anyone has any of their old radio sets with "Lovers" that they could post, I'd be very grateful!

Oops just remembered Benny already tracklisted 1st week of these, oh well.
― Mr Andy M, Saturday, 3 March 2012 21:25 (thirteen years ago)
Much thanks for that Tracer! "Lovers" is a big tune, very nice, but I can see Funkystepz's point about it not fitting in with their newer aesthetic. Maxsin mentioned on Target's show that they make something like 10 new tracks per WEEK! I can't imagine all the gems of theirs that will never get a proper release.
― Astrochimp32, Sunday, 4 March 2012 02:57 (thirteen years ago)
Those 1xtra mixes are big! Hopefully Funkystepz put up the final DJ Target guest mix on their soundcloud. It's an instrumental mix, and like the others, it's really good. It has a couple of new instrumental tracks as well. With all the new instrumentals they've premiered in these mixes, like XTC, Radar, Mondo Bizarro etc., they have easily enough material to put out a killer EP every 2-3 months throughout 2012. They get plenty of love here and on dissensus, but I wonder when they will start to get some attention from the mainstream?
― Astrochimp32, Sunday, 4 March 2012 03:25 (thirteen years ago)
Mentasms! Can't say I thought much of the original, but this is good.

I have just discovered "Circles" (I know, very very belatedly) and it is making me very happy, not just a perfect house track but a brilliant pop song.
― boxedjoy, Saturday, 17 March 2012 22:46 (thirteen years ago)
did anyone download the remix of 'climax' that was on their soundcloud for a while? i came home looking forward to it after a weekend of only phone internet access, and then it was GONE.
― Boo-Yaa Too Rough International Boo-Yaa Empire (Merdeyeux), Saturday, 31 March 2012 16:56 (thirteen years ago)
I recorded the Climax remix before it got taken down. I've never uploaded anything but here goes nothing, hopefully Funkystepz don't have a problem with me uploading this here: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?yd4yn3aztbv8vvy . As Benny mentioned over on dissensus, they've hit this sweet spot between UK Funky and UK Garage, their recent remixes (and everything else they've done) has been so good. Everybody be sure to pick up the Royal Rumble EP on Monday, you won't be disappointed!
― Astrochimp32, Saturday, 31 March 2012 23:42 (thirteen years ago)

"warrior" is such a banger but i always prefer their remixes to their instrumental tunes (same goes for ill blu too)
― lex pretend, Monday, 2 April 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)
apart from "we found love" which not even funkystepz could salvage
I think this is their strongest EP yet.
Even though "Jigga" is a bit "I see what you did there" it's hard not to love their sheer gumption - who else would even attempt it?

Does anyone know the significance of the titles (Miami Bass vs. Loveshy) btw?
― MikoMcha, Monday, 21 May 2012 14:40 (thirteen years ago)
Yes! Love that Buju Banton remix, brilliant that one, as are they all, including the Rudekid remix they just put out. I wouldn't think the Weeknd (or Bruno Mars for that matter) would be the best material for them to remix, but I think they all work, love the dark garage vibe of those. Ridiculous how many good tunes Funkystepz have amassed.

CAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKE has been in my head for the past three days and it is making my life better. Can these guys not just get Lily Mackenzie or whoever to do a full album of banging vocal tracks of their own so I don't have to feel guilty about not turning off Bruno Mars/Drake?
― boxedjoy, Friday, 25 May 2012 22:55 (thirteen years ago)
also one of the simplest pleasures I'm getting from listening to this collection is from shouting FUNKYSTEPZ at moments it could/does fit in, I might have to create a "best funky producer audio tag" poll
― boxedjoy, Friday, 25 May 2012 22:57 (thirteen years ago)
I have the "FUN-KY-STEPZ" and "PRE-DI-TAH" tags enter my brain at the randomest moments
― The Reverend, Friday, 25 May 2012 23:04 (thirteen years ago)
I also get the Crazy Cousinz "oh", Cooly G's "mmmm-mwah", Ill Blu's "eww", Champion's "champion sound" and "Roska Roska Roska" popping into my head a lot. I'm sure you could argue that it says a lot for the songcraft of these producers when even their sound tags are earworms.

yeah, you're right -- it's kind of a hook in itself... they really deploy it so well
― fapper don (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 26 May 2012 02:37 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, such a dope element in and of itself
― The Reverend, Saturday, 26 May 2012 07:29 (thirteen years ago)
Lil Silva and Miss Fire are two more Funky producers with sound tags, I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Wonder why so many in Funky? I agree Funkystepz's is the best, it not only lets you know it's them, but how they deploy it right before the drop really pushed the tune even higher.
― Astrochimp32, Saturday, 26 May 2012 22:08 (thirteen years ago)

― kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Sunday, 27 May 2012 11:10 (thirteen years ago)
I always think of the Ill Blu one as the echoey deep computer voice 'ill-ill Blu'. I don't think I spotted the eww until the thread on here. MY faves are at the mo are prob Funkystepz and Champion. Worst was prob when you go see Marcus Nasty and you get a dreary voice slowly saying over every other track 'marcus nasty dubplate special' even if the song had been out for years.

Wonder why so many in Funky?
A lot of grime guys do it as well. Terror and Preditah obv, but ppl like Silencer (TEDDY!), Rude Kid (Are you ready! / Always ready!), D.O.K. (Ha!), Skepta/JME (Serious!) and Spooky (spooky... a bit crap that one). Thought it might have something to do with the DJs / producers not having to rely on egocentric MCs to shout them out, but I'm just guessing here.

My dream commission is to write an entire thinkpiece about uk funky producer tags. This is a handy guide I assembled back in March 2010:
Funky producer signatures rated:Roska - Somewhat boring in and of itself, but the rhythmic repetitiveness of 'roska!roska!roska!' sounds great when dropped at the right moment of a track. 6Crazy Cousinz - The "Whoop!" works in so many settings, is instantly reognisable without being so singular as to get annoying through overuse, and is great not merely as a producer signature but as a herald of key points in the tune - usually it drops just before the beat rolls out again. 9Scotty D / Funk Factory - Points deducted for not being intelligible: purportedly this is "now hear this!" but it sounds like "whoiddit?" to me. 4Cooly G - The lazy drawl of "yeah it's Cooly S G, mwah" is so seductive, though its very laziness works against its capacity to act as a hype inducer. But it never gets old either. 7Funkystepz - Sometimes this is straightforward but when they stutter it "F-f-f-f-f-funkystepz!" in a highpitched goblin chirp it's by far the best drop-announcer in the game. 9Greyman - That scraggy chuckle makes me think of a ghost dog (though not Ghost Dog) so points for imaginativeness. But it's an easy signature to overlook. 6Lil' Silva - Kinda boring "menacing" slow announcement of his name, barely different from all the "marcus... nasty... dub-dub-plate..." stuff. 4Screama - "Complex Simplicity!" wins sympathy votes for me simply because it references Teedra Moses, but in truth this is not that successful a producer tag. 5Ill Blu - Not one but two tags, on the one hand those disgusted "ew!" cries which probably technically involve someone attempting to say "Ill", then the evil robot intoning "Ill... Blu..." The sense of timing for the deployment of both is almost always exquisite. Flawless in concept and execution. 10

Great mix! Nice mix of Funky, Garage and Grime. I like the Scrufizzer collaborations too, they're hard and heavy, but still rhythmically interesting. I really hope 'XTC, 'Mundo Bizzaro' and 'Radar' get releases in the near future, those tracks are amazing. Off topic, but why on earth is BBC 1xtra dropping DJ Q? He's the best thing going for them, imo.

Anyone else hear this? It's out now.http://soundcloud.com/3beat/3beat098-preeya-kalidas-love-3I just realized that Preeya Kalidas played Omar's wife in Four Lions. I knew she looked familiar!
― Astrochimp32, Thursday, 7 June 2012 18:16 (thirteen years ago)
is it wrong that half the reason I'm addicted to them right now is because i love their tag so much?
― frog ball (caulk the wagon and float it), Thursday, 7 June 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)
Tim F or anybody else, what's one of their songs where they do the stuttered "highpitched goblin chirp" tag?
― frog ball (caulk the wagon and float it), Thursday, 7 June 2012 18:20 (thirteen years ago)
?standard one as in beginning of birthday cake remix or something rarer?
― ogmor, Thursday, 7 June 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago)
kinda funny anomalous thing is that dj q despite his ineffable genius is probably the one ukg-and-related dj who's never really traditionally ever played much funkystepz stuff
― r|t|c, Thursday, 7 June 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)
I've been wondering about that too. It is Scrufizzer that does the tag, no? His voice could be described as a 'highpitched goblin chirp", just listen to 'Funkystepz Anthem' from their Boiler Room set. I've noticed the sometimes downpitch the tag, like on 'Hurricane Riddim' and 'John Wayne'.
― Astrochimp32, Thursday, 7 June 2012 19:14 (thirteen years ago)
ok guys enough about the flipping tags already

NOT ENOUGH ABOUT THE FLIPPING TAGS

the tags are fantastic but ONLY IF YOU DON'T THINK ABOUT THEM TOO MUCH
― kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Thursday, 7 June 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)
you can have your tags talk if you say anything remotely at all of value about the myriad dizzying musics of funkystepz, imagine that for a compromise

here's the set to cut out and keep btw
'mind f' is the ONE i tell you, the prancing dinosaur sequel to 'fuller' ONE
― r|t|c, Thursday, 7 June 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)
I get your point, rtc, but as an unrepentant Funkystepz fanboy, I'm just glad people are talking about them at all, here and dissensus are the only places I'm aware of online where they get any love at all, if it takes some tedious tag talk to accomplish that, I can live with that. I'm glad I'm not the only one that loves Mind F! It sounds to me like a mix between 'Vortex' and 'Phantom' with a psy-trancey 303 grumbling underneath.
― Astrochimp32, Thursday, 7 June 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)
i love the preeya kalidas remix!
haha omg the gothic backing vox coming in at 2:40
― kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Thursday, 7 June 2012 21:10 (thirteen years ago)
also hey the original is surprisingly good too
'kinda funny anomalous thing is that dj q despite his ineffable genius is probably the one ukg-and-related dj who's never really traditionally ever played much funkystepz stuff'
true. In a way Funkystepz are a bit too good for their own good now. Now that that the funky scene has died and fell away beneath their feet, its sort of hard to see how they fit in. As much as I enjoy Qs show and a lot of the new garage he's playing, when funkystepz do garage they make everyone else look shit. it must be quite intimidating for everyone else.
The fact they have so many killers that their DJ sets are all their own tracks only underlines how far ahead and isolated they are by now.
― Benny B, Friday, 8 June 2012 00:44 (thirteen years ago)
First "Pastor Lucas" and now the girl who played Amira in Eastenders, do you think Funkystepz have a fondness for the BBC soap opera?
― boxedjoy, Friday, 8 June 2012 10:09 (thirteen years ago)
heh benny tbf they were playing full sets of their own productions even when it wasnt yet all killer
i don't disagree that they outmatch a lot of other stuff in quality but that gives the misleading impression that they're on the same page to begin with
certainly the mutated dutch gene in their dna - or at least the way it's mutated - is something sui generis and as yet indigestible to the nu-garage nation
― r|t|c, Friday, 8 June 2012 10:47 (thirteen years ago)
i think that (absolute masterpiece of a) remix for the rude kid tune is probably going to do well for them in terms of its comparative restraint
― r|t|c, Friday, 8 June 2012 10:50 (thirteen years ago)
love Star 9 so much
the Scrufizzer stuff is thrilling, coming off of 20 minutes of no rapping to suddenly having every demi-bar stuffed with eight words apiece
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 8 June 2012 11:06 (thirteen years ago)
i also love how little - as DJs - Funkystepz appear to give a fuck
ya scrufizzer is such a fun dizzee/twista hybrid (even if he can be schizo to the point of alarming on occasion)

― Tim F, Saturday, 9 June 2012 07:01 (thirteen years ago)
My favourite grime set of last year, absolutely wild. Quite frustrating that Scru can't capture the same energy on record, apart from maybe his 'Circles' freestyle, all his singles are let down by weak choruses. Haven't listened to Barricade yet, tho.
― Mercer Finn, Saturday, 9 June 2012 09:57 (thirteen years ago)
Also, yeah, Teeza is woeful.

(the one that comes before and joins the dots with 'star 9')
Last year I never found the Funkystepz plasticky mini-Autobot arsenal quite as exciting as Ill Blu gleefully causing explosions all over the place but they seem to have maintained their upward trajectory more successfully. The DJ Q mix is a blinder.
― Matt DC, Sunday, 24 June 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)
Yes, I think there's definitely a moment starting from "Warrior" where they really started to up the ante on their instrumental bangers. The idea that they worked best on vocal tunes or remixes was a reasonable position up to that point.
― Tim F, Sunday, 24 June 2012 21:53 (thirteen years ago)
that is still my position w/r/t both funkystepz and ill blu, i find their instrumentals mostly admirable but the minute a vocal remix comes along it hits the spot in a way the instrumentals have never done
― bitch I'm on the 242 (lex pretend), Sunday, 24 June 2012 23:39 (thirteen years ago)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPtoxmwMxAw. Love this one. Really love the Shanay Holmes remix too, the vocal breakdown on that one is crazy. My one minor complaint for Funkystepz is that they don't do enough vocal tracks, whrn they do them they are great. On Shox's show Maxsin said they were working on that though, trying to get some done with Lily Mckenzie. Shanay Holmes also said she's be collaborating with them and in the near future.
― Astrochimp32, Sunday, 24 June 2012 23:42 (thirteen years ago)
Just my opinion, and I love Ill Blu, but if that last XLR8R mix is indicative of their recent work, then Funkystepz are far and away the better producers atm. Funkystepz's sound continues to get more nuanced, detailed, and complex, but as it does, instead of becoming more cluttered or awkward, it's even more full of raw energy and banging rhythms. Their recent guest mix on Shox's Rinse show is also great, everyone should check that out.
― Astrochimp32, Sunday, 24 June 2012 23:59 (thirteen years ago)
Yes I'd say Ill Blu's sound peaked in late 2010 (though I liked the XLR8R mix) whereas Funkystepz appear to be still peaking.
One of the issues being that Ill Blu are much more within the orbit of that more masculinist post-dubstep-and-dutch-house kinda vibe characterised by Marco Del Horno / Shox (ironically given the above) / the kind-of-funky-Marcus-now-plays*, both sonically and socially and in terms of their own listening habits (e.g. the sorts of tunes they post to youtube) which is pulling them away from that galloping rrrrushiness they had previously perfected.
OTOH I'm not sure where you'd really take that sound after e.g. the "Green Light" remix on the one hand and "Monsta" on the other so I don't really think of Ill Blu as having fallen off (except in the lack-of-releases sense) so much as necessarily having reached the end of a chapter.
* Pantha / X5 Dubs / Kry Wolf et. al. I should probably address my mixed feelings re this stuff at some point.
Whereas I think the Funkystepz aesthetic was much hazier and more ill-defined for a long time and has really only snapped into focus in early 2011, as much as I adore many of their tunes from prior to that time (indeed since their very first widely-played tune).
― Tim F, Monday, 25 June 2012 00:10 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I noticed the last time I listened to Ill Blu's radio show that they were playing mostly "wobbly Funky" or whatever you call it, Their XLR8R mix had a lot of that same overly aggressive, glum, dour vibe. Funkystepz's recent work, otoh, while being plenty heavy, has a much more fun, colorful vibe to it. Ill Blu are obviously very talented producers though, so hopefully they can apply their talent in a new, more fruitful, and most of all, more fun direction.
― Astrochimp32, Monday, 25 June 2012 00:32 (thirteen years ago)
It's worth noting though that Ill Blu's own recent productions (as per the XLR8R mix) are basically "wobbly funky" at its very best. Basically Ill Blu >> Pantha >> everyone else.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3PDaDc5WmQ
― Tim F, Thursday, 28 June 2012 11:07 (thirteen years ago)
I'm not really feeling the Amira from Eastenders remix, Funkystepz contribution is great but it would be much better without the watery diffident vocal.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 28 June 2012 11:08 (thirteen years ago)
Kind of agree about Ill Blu's more recent direction but at their best (most of that Mistajam mix from last year) they're only 'dark' in cartoonish shoot-em-up way.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 28 June 2012 11:10 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah that's what saves them - and the Mistajam mix is amazing front to back.
― Tim F, Thursday, 28 June 2012 11:17 (thirteen years ago)
Hope that new Funkystepz instrumental EP has 4 tracks on it, like the Royal Rumble EP, they have so many good tunes they could release. I'm going to give the Ill Blu XLR8R mix another chance- I absolutely love their Mistajam mix, I may have let my antipathy of the whole Redlight/Pantha wobbly Funky and lack of lighter vocal tracks in their radio sets prejudice my view. OTOH, maybe Funkystepz (and Champion as well) are simply better at making heavy instrumental bangers at this point?
― Astrochimp32, Thursday, 28 June 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)
I'm definitely more excited about Champion than Ill Blu at this point.

Funkystepz with a preview of their next four-track instrumental EP of ultra bangers, the Dirty Fluxx EP:http://soundcloud.com/funkystepzuk/funkystepz-dirty-fluxx-ep#Maybe not a track on there quite as devastating as Royal Rumble, but all those sound incredible, Belter lives up to its name.
― Astrochimp32, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 06:06 (thirteen years ago)
If you haven't already, everyone should get their new EP. It's really amazing how their sound has progressed from their early Funky House tracks into this intricate, space-age sci-fi, dirty dutch meets grime/Funky business. I don't know what genre they fit into, honestly.

OTOH how dare they release a "Backlog" EP and leave off "Lovers".
― Tim F, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 22:11 (twelve years ago)
Despite bingeing heavily in Funkystepz instrumental bangers a while back they always feel like they're missing something on their own. Because you hear them piled on top of one another so regularly I've come to view the individual EP tracks as components of some ridiculous mecha-banger that can be slotted together in a load of different ways. Their EPs are more consistently great then pretty much anyone else's at the moment and still they suffer in comparison to their mixes.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 22:26 (twelve years ago)
yes that is true, and I think it prevents a lot of people from recognising their greatest material, which was always designed to be listened to in the mix

It just made my day to see "XTC" is getting a release. I doubt "Lovers" will ever see the light of day, though, Tim, unless they include it in their annual Christmas giveaway, it just sounds so much different than what they put out over the last year and a half. On the bright side, that new vocal track "Bring Me Back" of theirs sounds sick!
― Astrochimp32, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 23:42 (twelve years ago)
yeah, difficult to make a big deal of it at the time at the end of that breathtaking mix but 'bring me back' sounded fucking fantastic

Click on the Louise Williams picture, then when you get to zippyshare.com, they'll be a box on the right with scrambled letters. Types those in, then click on the 'download now' link directly below. Hope that helps!

"Vice Versa" is awesome.

just getting round to listening to the Backlog EP now and, my god 'Section 5' is completely insane. I mean, I already knew about XTC's amazingness but that track had passed me by before somehow. The whole EP is incredible though. If Zomby or someone had released this as an album everyone would be going completely nuts for it. Have they ever talked about doing an album? I reckon they could do an amazing one.
Then again, casually tossing out a 9 track EP of backlog material that still pisses over 99% of everyone else is pretty admirable.

New Funkystepz from their soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/funkystepzuk/jeremih-all-the-time. That Shea Soul remix has been running through my head since I first heard it on Target's show. They're IMO the best producers in the UK (along with Lorenzo atm) and have been for over two years. The could easily put out another 2-3 Backlog EP's worth of killer tunes, their sheer volume of quality tracks is breathtaking. I'm genuinely perplexed at how Funkystepz have not blown up then. Is it their name? Their connection to UK Funky? Not conservative or serious enough for the Factmag/ Post-dubstep crowd? Maybe if they just changed their name to something like Blawan/Beneath/Girl Unit people would be falling over themselves to proclaim them as modern-day musical Gods?. Help me out here..

Several degrees of awesome - although I'm not inclined to check the originals, the remixes are so authoritative.

admire them for sticking to their guns in this most antipathetic of climates
altho maybe this is them in a holding pattern for the presumably meagre guaranteed french money idk
rly and truly they should just cut their uk nuum losses already and go all out to slay in the euro edm mongface godzilla stomper electrohouse arena proper instead of reinterpreting it for earnest fraidy cat internet tourists

i mean like if you flick thru this and try and claim that there's not plenty funkystepz kicks to be had then ur a dirty lying ape
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 22:33 (twelve years ago)
thing is i say "reinterpret" there as if there's any evidence they've ever paid attention to this stuff
but then it would be beyond quixotic for them to have just invented something so akin all on their innocent own so idk

This counts 10x more for Ill Blu by the way, or at least it did 18 months ago before the moment slipped away.

For those not already aware, a free EP for the holidays indulging the Loveshy side of things (a good thing): https://soundcloud.com/funkystepzuk/sets/funkystepz-loveshy-ep
Higher hit ratio than the Narcotics one earlier this year, I think.

― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 8 June 2014 21:47 (eleven years ago)
This is really great, though it does suggest that Funkystepz haven't decided yet how much they want to fall into line with everyone else and how much they want to continue to forge their own idiosyncratic path. It seems to veer between those two options, though with more subtlety and grace than I would have expected if you'd described that to me.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 11 June 2014 23:38 (eleven years ago)
yeah. on second listen (this time errr from the beginning) it's not nearly as crazed as i'd thought. very smoothed out and quite straight ahead housey actually. for me it really starts picking up around the 1/2 hr mark
