Pollin' Tracks Spo-Dee-O-Dee! ILM does the 1950s—NOMINATIONS THREAD

Message Bookmarked

There was a fair amount of discussion during the 20th Century poll last year about how the 1950s is an incredibly rich decade for music but suffers the misfortune of getting trapped in a blind spot when it comes to discussion on music of the modern era. Out of 125 top results, only a very few were recorded prior to 1960. We chose to give the 50s their due someday. That someday is here now.

Between now and the end of Saturday June 25th, do some exploration of the decade and nominate those tracks that deserve recognition. When you've made your decisions, please post your 25 nominated tracks in this thread using the ARTIST - TRACK format. Voting will be done via email after the close of nominations (the details of which we can discuss here over the next few weeks).

If you're at a loss for ideas, the lists at RYM are always helpful:
Whole decade "top" list: http://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/single/1950s
Whole decade "esoteric" list: http://rateyourmusic.com/charts/esoteric/single/1950s

(There are also lists in both categories for every individual year of the decade.)

For a broader and less detailed overview: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1950s_in_music

(There are also entries there for individual years in the decade.)

Don't just focus on rock and pop—why would you? There's jazz, blues, country, gospel, Broadway, folk, etc. If you're not an expert, turn it into a learning experience.

Awesome idea! Bravo for doing this... Stoked to get turned on to some cool stuff. Will mull over my own collection shortly...

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 29 May 2011 02:42 (fourteen years ago)

Ooh, excellent news. Will have to give this some thought...

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 May 2011 02:59 (fourteen years ago)

I did this really quick--just went through my media library, then added three or four extra that I never got around to digitizing. It's quite arbitrary, but these are the ones I didn't give a second thought to. You've already listed the Flamingos, so I knocked them off my list, which still leaves 26--don't begrudge it to me, J.F. I will inevitably be back at some point to add a handful I missed.

Elvis Presley: “Mystery Train” (1954)
Nolan Strong & the Diablos: “Since You’re Gone” (1954)
Celia Cruz: “Mi Soncito” (1955)
Five Keys: “Close Your Eyes” (1955)
Chips: “Rubber Biscuit” (1956)
Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers: “The ABC’s of Love” (1956)
Johnny Cash: “I Walk the Line” (1956)
Ray Price: “You Done Me Wrong” (1956)
Cellos: “Rang Tang Ding Dong (I Am the Japanese Sandman)” (1957)
Diamonds: “The Stroll” (1957)
Little Richard: “The Girl Can’t Help It” (1957)
Miller Sisters: “Got You on My Mind” (1957)
Bo Diddley: “Who Do You Love?” (1958)
Bobby Freeman: “Do You Want to Dance” (1958)
Buddy Holly: “Look at Me” (1958)
Dale Hawkins: “La-Do-Dada” (1958)
Dee & the Kool Gents: “When I Call on You” (1958)
El Dorados: “Lights Are Low” (1958)
Everly Brothers: “Problems” (1958)
Jerry Butler & the Impressions: “For Your Precious Love” (1958)
Michael Holliday: “The Story of My Life” (1958)
Pastels: “So Far Away” (1958)
Chuck Berry: “Almost Grown” (1959)
Louvin Brothers: “You’re Learning” (1959)
Miles Davis: “Flamenco Sketches” (1959)
Sheriff & the Ravels: “Shombalor” (1959)

clemenza, Sunday, 29 May 2011 03:03 (fourteen years ago)

Since I'm copy/pasting these into a spreadsheet, it would be super nice if everyone would follow that ARTIST - TRACK format I listed in the opening post. Thanks.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 May 2011 03:56 (fourteen years ago)

Hot noms!

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 May 2011 09:12 (fourteen years ago)

I went pretty quickly & thus with the obvious but good grief, this nom list could be ridiculously long & great even with just obvious noms.

Euler, Sunday, 29 May 2011 09:17 (fourteen years ago)

Ooh, before I forget! Would definitely have voted for this one in the 20C poll, but it never got nominated.

Also prefer the earlier version of Spo-Dee-O-Dee. Only found out a couple of weeks ago that the phrase was a replacement for 'motherfucker'. How naive.

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Sunday, 29 May 2011 11:46 (fourteen years ago)

Sorry, got one the wrong way around -

Lee Andrews and the Hearts - The Girl Around the Corner

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Sunday, 29 May 2011 11:54 (fourteen years ago)

I'll go pedant for a moment: Johnny Cash's version of "Long Black Veil" is from 1965, so not eligible for this poll. I nominated Lefty's version, the original, which is from 1959.

Euler, Sunday, 29 May 2011 12:38 (fourteen years ago)

Not pedantic at all, I thought I'd checked, but I hadn't obviously (or more likely checked badly). Thanks! (And apologies)

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Sunday, 29 May 2011 12:40 (fourteen years ago)

Pedant again! Chuck Berry's "Promised Land" is from 1965.

Euler, Sunday, 29 May 2011 12:41 (fourteen years ago)

I really am sorry, I'm dreadfully hungover. It's no excuse. Thank God you're on the ball.

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Sunday, 29 May 2011 12:45 (fourteen years ago)

no prob; jet-lagging & trying to stay focused & pedantry seems to be doing the job

Okay, my first go:

Louis & Bebe Barron - Battle with the Invisible Monster
Raymond Scott - Cindy Electronium
John Cage - Williams Mix

Sorry about the formatting--I thought I was following the guidelines, but I see what you mean now. I'm glad someone added Nervous Norvus. So far I've caught one huge oversight on my list, an all-time favourite, but it's not obscure and I'm sure it'll turn on on someone's list sooner or later.

clemenza, Sunday, 29 May 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

xp to outdoor miner: "You Send Me" had been nominated just before you did it, so you can have one more back.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 29 May 2011 18:00 (fourteen years ago)

Couple things...

So far, 191 tracks have been nominated.

If the group likely has a "The" at the beginning of their name, please include it. That'll make it easier for people to find it in the master list (I've been adding them where they're missing so far).

György Ligeti, Iannis Xenakis, and Otto Luening--is that who Don McLean meant by "the father, son, and the holy ghost"?

clemenza, Sunday, 29 May 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

Okay, so I'm just thinking out loud here, but the last couple days of nominating I'll probably open it up with a few more for everyone just to make sure we don't leave out anything important. That (mostly) worked pretty well for the 20C poll.

Also, I haven't talked to seandalai about helping out with the voting (he's not around much anymore), so I may end up tabulating manually. That means no 100-song ballots. Probably something manageable like 40. Not expecting turnout for this to be as big as other decade polls and definitely not the year-end polls, so hopefully tabulating manually won't eat up ALL my time. :)

I'm still here! Have just been correcting my ILX-life balance a bit. Looks like a great poll, I'm happy to help with the counting.

100 votes for a whole century was a whole different thing. I think 50 should be enough for one decade.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 08:40 (fourteen years ago)

"The Yellow Rose of Texas" - Stan Freberg.

Mark G, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 09:00 (fourteen years ago)

even 50 seems excessive. 25 or 30 should be fine. it's just a single decade.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 11:35 (fourteen years ago)

But if you only allow 25 or 30 votes, then voters will end up choosing their noms and giving the few remaining numbers to obvious, well-known songs and we'll end up with a boring top 10 and a number of mishaps and random winners below.

Pa' GoCzar (_Rudipherous_), Tuesday, 31 May 2011 12:37 (fourteen years ago)

I'd go with 40 or 50 votes. Would usually suggest less but there is obviously the problem of people just voting for their own nominations. But definitely not 100, please. That's way too many for a single decade poll, and the nature of the task would probably put me off voting at all.

emil.y, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm more in the 40/50 boat myself.

even 50 seems excessive.

I resisted the 100-song ballot for the 20C poll until I could resist no longer, and then was glad it became a reality at voting time. 50 seems about right for this, which means when I vote I'll be wishing I had just two or three more spaces.

FIFTY: is the number of jubilee or deliverance. It is the issue of 7x7 +1 or 7 squared + 1, and points to deliverance and rest following on as the result of the perfect consummation of time.

* On the 50th day after leaving Egypt God met Israel at Sinai, = the first Pentecost (this Greek word means "50th day"). [Exodus 19:1; 14-16]
* 50 is grace = 5 multiplied by perfect order = 10.
* In the 50th year, known as a Jubilee year, all debts were to be forgiven, all Hebrew slaves were to be freed, and all land returned to the original owner. [Leviticus]
* On the 50th day after the Resurrection the Holy Spirit came to the disciples in the Upper Room, the second Pentecost. [Acts 1:3; 2:1]

Pa' GoCzar (_Rudipherous_), Tuesday, 31 May 2011 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 21:06 (fourteen years ago)

The only decades where I could go beyond 50 would be the '60 or '70s. Any other decade, past 50 I'd be filling in slots with stuff I like but that has no special significance for me.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 2 June 2011 13:58 (fourteen years ago)

Moka, I'm currently browsing the internet for suitable musique concrète tracks, too! Great minds, etc etc. Also pondering Nordine - if it was an albums poll I'd be on it like a shot, but got to think more carefully about individual track selection. Also, he did the work I like best in the '60s, so is it just fondness for the man that makes me want to nominate his earlier stuff too? (Answer is probably no for Nordine, the Word Jazz album is genius in itself, but I did just discount Oram for this reason.)

Also, yeah, I have the thing of lightbulb going off then looking things up only to find they're '60s or '40s, or sometimes even '30s. Dang, I'm bad at this.

emil.y, Thursday, 2 June 2011 14:04 (fourteen years ago)

I'm focusing right now on Schaeffer's 'Groupe de Recherches Musicales' collective. They released a couple of eps and singles in the 50's that could qualify as they were pieces conceived in short-length and they stand pretty well when isolated.

Word Jazz is brilliant, I would definitely rate it high on an albums poll. I'll vote Nordine if you nom it!

Yeah, my problem has been with deciphering what are 'movements' and what are distinct tracks. I think the general consensus with ILM polls is that movements can't be separated.

emil.y, Thursday, 2 June 2011 15:29 (fourteen years ago)

Bobby Jones on Jack Nicklaus: "He plays a game with which I am not familiar." There are two polls going on here...which is great.

clemenza, Thursday, 2 June 2011 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

I think the general consensus with ILM polls is that movements can't be separated.

We tried to do that in the 20C poll, but then DJP got in a huff because he couldn't nominate entire musicals and other people were nominating entire jazz albums for a tracks poll. It seemed like a good idea at the time to break those things up, but by the time the countdown came around it didn't really seem like such a big deal anymore. If there's an entire movement—a single idea with multiple sections—you (or anyone else) would like to nominate, go for it!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 June 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

(I still think it would be perfectly easy and sensible to break up musicals. Jazz albums and such are often tricker.)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 June 2011 03:13 (fourteen years ago)

a lot of songs I think of as "50s" are actually from 1960-63.

Those four years could probably support a poll of their own. I just got done watching a girl groups doc (poorly put together, made in the 80s, but did its job) and it was full of amazing music front to back—and didn't even touch on the guy groups, surf bands, etc.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 June 2011 08:34 (fourteen years ago)

Mighty Sparrow - Jean and Dinah

already nommed. Have been vaguely wishing that someone would turn up & drop an all-calypso 25, would like more knowledge of Sparrow, Melo etc.

Agreed on 60-63 - a ton of stuff popping into my head is actually from this stretch.

portrait of velleity (woof), Friday, 3 June 2011 08:56 (fourteen years ago)

Second both those things (witness my blundering around the early sixties with a couple of entries). Started looking at calypso stuff, inc Mighty Sparrow, but would like someone who really knows it inside out. Still got two noms left. So much good stuff here, really looking fwd to voting + results.

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Friday, 3 June 2011 09:01 (fourteen years ago)

Billie Holiday - What's New?
Tito Rodriguez - Tremendo Cumban
Peruchin - Guaguanco Callejero

25/25

(I should have something to say about a lot of these, during campaigning. I know Billie Holiday recorded earlier versions of the two songs of hers that I picked, but I'm more familiar with her 50s output.)

Pa' GoCzar (_Rudipherous_), Friday, 3 June 2011 12:38 (fourteen years ago)

(I really have only a very superficial knowledge of 1950s Latin music, and I'm lukewarm to mambo in general, though there's some I like. I tried to find a Machito track I could honestly endorse, but I don't care for his sound. Okay, I'll get off the nominations thread.)

Pa' GoCzar (_Rudipherous_), Friday, 3 June 2011 12:40 (fourteen years ago)

Johnny "Guitar" Watson - Space Guitar

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 4 June 2011 06:56 (fourteen years ago)

I'm adding this (very canonical) one since no one else will, it seems. It might not survive the voting, but it should be there at least.

Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode

13/25

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 4 June 2011 07:02 (fourteen years ago)

Certainly should be there - in the results too I think. Love it's full-throated ease, but I wonder whether that, or maybe it's being so canonical means it doesn't stand out.

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Saturday, 4 June 2011 07:36 (fourteen years ago)

It's like other songs ("Let's Get it On" or "Green Onions") in that it's become less of a song and more like pop culture wallpaper. People know it so well it's hard to appreciate in any way that's fresh.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 4 June 2011 07:46 (fourteen years ago)

Ok, I'm going to nom

Lord Kitchener - Victory Calypso
Dave Bartholomew - The Monkey

Was looking to Ten to One is Murder by The Mighty Sparrow but it's 1960, so Victory Calypso it is.

Victory Calypso surely not the best calypso and perhaps not even the best cricket calypso song - I was even tempted to nominate the plangent, wistful Alec Bedser Calypso ('Who taught you to bowl Australia?') from '53. But it feels like a marker of various sorts, and is a cheerful narrative of handing the colonial masters their asses on a plate at one of their establishment fortresses - an all-too rare early moment of glory for Windrush immigrants.

Fizzles the Chimp (GamalielRatsey), Saturday, 4 June 2011 08:19 (fourteen years ago)

And that's me done btw.

I wouldn't mind a bit.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 5 June 2011 20:21 (fourteen years ago)

Jimmy Reed - I Ain't Got You
Herbie Nichols - Terpsichore
The Soul Stirrers - By and By

Sonny Rollins - Tenor Madness

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 03:00 (fourteen years ago)

Yes yes yes, more. Do we have all the '50s tracks from the 20th century poll listed? Not that many of them made a splash, mind you.

emil.y, Wednesday, 15 June 2011 11:15 (fourteen years ago)

Sad the last noms I entered were 10 days ago...but there are 10 more days to nominate! More songs!

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 15 June 2011 11:28 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I have a ton of rockabilly comps etc to go through and work out what year the songs are from, hopefully I'll get to it before the deadline. Want to get some more R&B noms in as well.

Hey guys, I'm late to the party here. If any of you want to nominate more songs feel free to do it via me.

...wow! (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

Too busy at work to give this the time it deserves, but this has been my most listened to musical era for the past 10 years or more, sadly ignored by oldies radio and the vast majority of modern listeners, I think. That spreadsheet is amazing; I play in a band that covers a bunch of them and I'll c/p the list for more inspiration.

Off the top of my head I would nominate:

Wanda Jackson - Let's have A Party
Roy Hamilton - Don't Let Go
Chris Kenner - Sick and Tired
The Collins Kids - Whistle Bait
Smiley Lewis - I Hear You Knocking

Duke Manfist: Action Hero (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

Before I forget, here's a few to be going on with:

Bernard Bresslaw - Mad Passionate Love
Frankie Ford - Sea Cruise
Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong - Summertime
Billie Holliday - I'm A Fool To Want You
Clarence 'Frogman' Henry - Ain't Got No Home
Buddy Holly - It Doesn't Matter Anymore
Gene Kelly - Singin' in the Rain
Lord Rockingham's XI - Hoots Mon
Little Junior and the Blue Flames - Feelin' Good
Lord Kitchener - London Is The Place For Me
Shirley & Lee - Let The Good Times Roll
The Swallows - It Ain't The Meat, It's the Motion

12/25

Cluster the boots (Billy Dods), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

Most of the artists I would nominate are here already. Though there are some favorite tracks missing, I think I should probably just vote for the ones already here to reduce vote-splitting.

o. nate, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

more more!

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Monday, 20 June 2011 05:15 (fourteen years ago)

Bumping again.

If you've already nominated 25 and want to nominate more, go ahead.

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 21 June 2011 18:45 (fourteen years ago)

In honour of Mr. Hongro, I'm going to submit some more doo-wop tracks tonight. There's some I'd definitely vote for that haven't been nominated yet--I want to check my media player, though.

clemenza, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 18:57 (fourteen years ago)

just remembered about this poll and so glad i haven't missed the chance to nominate. i have the day off work tomorrow so i'm going to laze in bed in the morning and have a great time thinking and nominating. i love the 50s.

also big <3 to nominator upthread for both the marcels and elvis's blue moon.

whatever, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

and thanks johnny for stepping up again after the pavement joy.

whatever, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 20:42 (fourteen years ago)

Sorry Johnny, it turns out I don't know the decade at all as well as I thought I might. I eventually managed to scrape together twenty, then it turned out half were on the list already. Here's the remaining ten:

Frank Loesser - Sit Down, You're Rocking The Boat
Elvis Presley - Jailhouse Rock
Leonard Bernstein - America
Rodgers & Hammerstein - Getting To Know You
Lerner & Loewe - On The Street Where You Live
Lerner & Loewe - I Could Have Danced All Night
Rodgers & Hammerstein - My Favourite Things
Rodgers & Hammerstein - The Sound of Music
Mitzi Gaynor - I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair
The Chordettes - Mr Sandman

I didn't know what to do about songs from musicals. Where the song was first published in the 50s I've credited the composer; where it was published earlier but recorded in the 50s I've credited the performer.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 21 June 2011 21:34 (fourteen years ago)

Okay, I'm going with:

Pierre Schaeffer - Erotic
Marie Bryant - Tomato
Ken Nordine - Flibberty Jib

Still only 8... gonna have to think harder.

emil.y, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 01:01 (fourteen years ago)

Lucho Gatica - Historia de un Amor

Protools of the Elders of Zion (_Rudipherous_), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 03:09 (fourteen years ago)

Johnny Mathis - Wonderful Wonderful

Will add more when I find the time

gospodin simmel, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 15:25 (fourteen years ago)

Elvis Presley - Hound Dog

I'm guessing this hasn't been nominated because Big Mama Thornton's version is already up, but it should be there. The greatest b-side of all time?

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

Elvis Presley - Heartbreak Hotel

Danny & The Juniors - At the Hop
The Silhouettes - Get a Job

Stanley Tunechi (Spectrist), Friday, 24 June 2011 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

I'd also like to nominate "Blue In Green" by Miles Davis, because I am certain others will just go for the faster tracks, but that beautiful ballad is actually the highlight of the "Kind of Blue" album.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Friday, 24 June 2011 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

Kitty Kallen - Little Things Mean a Lot
Patti Page - Tennessee Waltz

I'm A Genius, Too! (Jamie_ATP), Friday, 24 June 2011 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

Chuck Berry's "School Days" should be "School Day." Great choice.

Most of my faves are covered except Christmas songs, which I'll leave out. Some Minnesota (and Mexican American) love, 2/25:

Augie Garcia - Hi Yo Silver
Kico Rangel Band featuring the Rangel Sisters - Ábrete Sésamo

Jimmy Jam's dad played on the first one, which is pretty great.

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 24 June 2011 23:33 (fourteen years ago)

Other faves, 15/25:

Chuck Berry - Wee Wee Hours
Clyde McPhatter - I Can't Stand Up Alone
Duke Ellington - The Mooche
Elvis Presley - Shake, Rattle and Roll
Fats Domino - Whole Lotta Loving
Howlin' Wolf - Moanin' at Midnight
Joe Williams and Count Basie - Teach Me Tonight
Little Richard and His Band - Jenny, Jenny
Lord Kitchener - Ah Bernice
Professor Longhair - Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand
Professor Longhair - No Buts - No Maybes
The Mighty Sparrow - Short Little Shorts
Woody Guthrie - Why, Oh Why

I'm happy to go with the consensus calypso songs, but those are a couple of my favorites. As for Professor Longhair, it's not vote-splitting in my case--I'll probably actually vote for them all. "Why, Oh Why" is one of my favorite children's songs ever.

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 24 June 2011 23:40 (fourteen years ago)

This has potential to be a great ILM poll, as I have no idea what the consensus top 20 would be.

President Keyes, Saturday, 25 June 2011 02:12 (fourteen years ago)

I imagine things like "I Only Have Eyes for You" will end up in the top 20 after doing so well in the 20c poll, but outside of that it's just a big question mark.

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 25 June 2011 02:16 (fourteen years ago)

One thing that struck me earlier was that while many of us here may not be very familiar with the 50s, pooling what everyone knows has resulted in an interesting list of nominations. The results should be fun.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 25 June 2011 03:17 (fourteen years ago)

So as far as voting goes, I was thinking ballots of 50 with the 100, 98, 96, 94...6, 4, 2 point arrangement, some point total for unranked ballots (haven't mathed that out yet), and then split ballots (partly ranked, partly unranked—equally distributing points out of the total left)...so, just like the 20c poll or the most recent EOY polls. Either two or three weeks of voting (does anyone have a preference for three weeks?).

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 25 June 2011 03:27 (fourteen years ago)
