I do think that the figure of the hipster is mercurial and indefinable by nature. It's an ingrained fact of the concept. It was slightly teasing but not at all insulting -- like a "scenester" wasn't just somebody who went to a lot of rock shows, it was someone who sort of compulsively went to ALL the rock shows. Sometimes they wore gas station worker shirts with names embroidered on the front that they bought at a vintage store. As I recall, "hipster," in 1996, was a weird antique word which you would no more use seriously than you would "groovy" or "square."

Thing is there isn't actually any other viable option, so what're you supposed to do? Stop listening to music/engaging w/any art, give up on all ppl, dress badly, die, what?

the whole point of the concept of "hipsterism" is that you can't win. nobody who cares about this would want to be the kind of person who would never be mistaken for a hipster. the crisis isn't that you don't want to be seen as "pretentious" by people insecure enough to accuse others of being pretentious; nobody really cares about that. it is that you cannot evade becoming just another demographic to be marketed to. alt is not an alternative.

this is the first time i encountered "hipster" in the contemporary sense. i was in highschool in the suburbs when I read that site, so as far as I knew the concept was around forever. http://www.suck.com/daily/99/03/05/

the song "pursuit of happiness" perfectly filled a niche left vacant when frat guys at my college got tired of "i feel like dying." those are the guys who really understand what it feels like to exhaust your brain's pleasure centers with drugs. hipsters don't ever follow their bliss to terrifying places the way lil wayne and kid cudi do.

at my college there were these frat dudes and sorority girls who would actually look way older than their chronological age by the time they graduated. this kind of hard living was unheard of among the kids who lived in peace house or farm house.

i feel like i gotta standup for pseudointellectual white trash here. i come from a long line of pseudointellectual white trash on my dad's side, and none of us would ever be mistaken for "hipsters" before very, very recently. just another way star wars ruined everything, i guess.

i could see how some people might get pissed off at the music i listen to 'cuz i can relate to el p better than i can relate to killer mike. like, whatever hip-hop's essential purpose is "sampling mike ratledge organ solos" probably isn't part of it. at the same time yes i'm too damn old to care.
