amazing track ! everyone i've played it for loves it. there is a beatless version not on the vinyl floating around digitally. A-side is huge as well, been playing it at my club night a lot.

can't get enough of this one either. one of my favorite tracks all year, maybe even my favorite outright

what i was saying was more of a question than a statement. i want to know what sound the main synth line (not the rhythms) is referencing. to me, this and oar3b seem like they're trying to sound like early warp or early detroit stuff, but i don't know those things that well to know.

Oar3b is much more warp-y, specifically Black Dog. With this one the similarity is there but more like B12 in the melodies, i think.

snooze is quite b-12y, that is, Ragyish is more like Lindstrom than anything else although there's maybe a little Jedi Knights in there.

IDGI, this sounds like pretty straight-down-the-line nu-balearic to me, albeit perfectly executed and very lovely indeed.

it sort of reminds me of stuff by Lawrence, a bit? somewhere between the autumn-evening-calm of 'somebody told me' and the endless bubbles of the superpitcher rmx of 'along the wire'.

A Superpitcher remix of Snoove 4 Love would be amazing actually, kinda thinking in the style of his Iridum remix.

That's my favourite thing about it - I think it's intended as more of an acciaccatura, but it's really evocative.

They're just ever so slightly too *off* to be proper grace notes, but it's the slight off-ness of them that makes them such ear candy. And I miss them when the song settles down to its cosmic juggernaut groove, and it's so exciting when they pop back up mid kosmische groove. So more-ish.

Grace note is kinda the umbrella term, I just wanted to write "acciaccatura" because it's such a pleasing word.

i only REALLY understood it when i danced to it at a party. and only when i couldn't put my finger on what it 'is' (trainspotting as self defense etc), i realized this is a proper unclassic dance anthem (of 'knights of the jaguar' proportions), but in EXTREME slow motion. it's totally fucking with temporality, i think. it's almost like it has managed to exist only through creating a loophole through time, escaping a nanosecond before the canon of the dance has completely closed.

yeah i kinda agree cuz i like these threads, the reasoning (on my part) for not starting song=specific threads is partly a) fear of tumbleweeds, which has happened a couple of times, b) if i started a new thread for every hot song i was into i'd be starting, like, at least one a day

Yeah, rolling thread ghettoization typically leads to discussion stagnation, especially with dance music I find.

Rolling threads have their uses but I do like threads like this and the Disco En Paradiso one. Even if there's nothing to say about the track and it's just people enthusing.

You really notice the influence of rolling threads when you get to ILM End of Year lists and they're full of songs that different blocs have voted for and everyone else goes "what's that? It's great!"

Also I find dutifully clicking through endless Youtube clips on an ILM thread to be a really joyless way of listening to music, but that might just be me.

As an old-timer who took a break from, like, '04 pretty much to a few months ago, it's interesting to read this. I like the rolling-genre threads in principle, but it feels as if they often get commandeered by a few folks that are far more knowledgeable about the genre than most others, and I think others get scared off a little from posting (at least, I know this has happened to me). The occasional "I'm really feeling this" thread feels much more inviting...

Also, I'm usually either reading ILM on my phone while I'm "on the road" or while I'm home working (in which case my stereo is on), and the constant stream of YouTubes on the rolling-genre threads is never really something I can make use of. (Ironic, I suppose, that I started this thread then with a YouTube.)

Also I find dutifully clicking through endless Youtube clips on an ILM thread to be a really joyless way of listening to music, but that might just be me.

Although it happens plenty, I wouldn't say ILM is my main avenue for discovering music, either. For me, it's always been about the discourse on here, the people and their thoughts and personalities. When those rolling-genre threads evolve into long strings of YouTubes with no commentary, that aspect of it is totally lost. I do understand why it happens; there's so much music coming at us from all corners at all times today, it's hard to really sit down and spend time even listening to--much less thinking about or discussing--any one thing, but I have to admit that I fear the FB-style "likes this"-ification of the discourse.

you know, i had underrated this, but it's all about context: in the dixon live at robert johnson mix, which slowly builds up to this as the last track, it sounds like the best thing ever

Dixon claims the last two tracks on his mix were a mistake and if he could do it over again, he wouldn't use Snooze 4 Love or the one that preceeds it. It does sound great as the closer of the mix though.

Terje Olsen is the grandson of the legendary astromechanic Jens Olsen, arguably the greatest clockmaker who ever lived. Although Jens was a Dane, his family eventually relocated to the remote Antarctic island Bouvetøya (Bouvet Island in English), where Terje’s father studied the mating rituals of the seal. it's better than Snooze 4 Love imo. the big buildup-release part is so euphoric.

Don't get me wrong, I love Inspector Norse and find it really jubilant, but it's not too far away from my personal twee border--a little too close to goofy. Whereas Snooze 4 Love is more restrained and austere, and feels like it has more depth.

I'm not sure I've got the hang of these tracks yet. They're quite fun, but I think I'd need to hear them in a dancefloor situation to truly appreciate them.

Yeah, I love Inspector Norse, especially that weird moment about 3:35 or where he goes to another chord, the filters kick in and it goes to a whole nother level, like the camera goes shift-tilt ... or that moment in the Capsule "World of Fantasy" video where they take off. It's a great track - but Snooze 4 Love has something kind of sublime that raises it above almost everything else I've heard in the past year.

xpost: I think you have to see it like an italo track (which it basically is). that the greatness lies in the fun-ness and "goofiness" of it.

Good point re: Italo, and I feel that--the bouncy octave-jumping synth bass in particular. I suppose my Italo preferences run more to the super-moody, "night"-themed, desperation-and-longing stuff more than the overtly goofy stuff... Still an awesome track (and the B-side of the 12" is nothing to sneeze at either).

I think Norse is fun and easy to mix into. I can think of many tracks that's perfect to be mixed with it. Also one of those tracks that's perfect for changing the dynamic/direction of a set.

yes, definitely! i love that reverso 68 remix in particular, but the earlier remixes and edits still seem to come from a much different place... i like most everything this guy puts out but i think he did something distinct with the snooze for loves that would definitely lend itself to the long-player format

Neither knock me flat like Strandbar (Disko) did, but I def like Q better of the two.

The payoff on Spiral is pretty good but the pre-buildup middle section is duller than you'd expect from TT - almost amateurish sounding. That hook/repetition shouldn't have made it past the demo phase. Q is solid all around.

"Delorean Dynamite", unsuprisingly, sounds a lot like Laserhawk (1, 2, 3).

I know it's been done a million times but I still love Delorean Dynamite! Doing Telex-style tracks is like the dance music version of playing jazz standards. The way it opens up in the second half is very uplifting!

Agreed. "Norse" just doesn't work as an album-capping climax when it's been around for years now. Nor does "Strandbar" work as well pared down to 4 minutes.

That said, first listen was pretty great.

As someone who also had impossibly high expectations for this, I was not disappointed in the slightest. It's just so much fun all the way through. Can't wait to play it when it gets nicer out.

I really can't be doing with the corny white tuxedo lounge wibbling in the first third of this, even though I was expecting it from the second I saw the cover.

I interviewed Todd the other week. Highlights included him telling me that the only reason any man DJs is to "make the ladies wet"

I guess the possibility of him being on my team was too good to be true, and sort of tricky since I'm convinced he's actually a distant relative.

The husk in Ferrys voice is really shocking to me. There's a geriatric buzz, the way WS Burroughs voice would appear in 80s avant music, and it was weird to hear an old man in a modern landscape. I couldn't believe this was Ferry at first- I haven't heard any recent singing from him, and wonder if the Jazz Age was intentionally instrumental because of the change in his tone. Or is he affecting something here?

It's just a really understated and hushed vocal from Ferry, not the kind of thing he typically does.

He's lost a lot of range -- it's rasped and gotten more epicene with age -- but as recently as 2010 he didn't sound like this.

I love Ferry, love Palmer's "Johnny and Mary," even loved the idea of Ferry covering it, but I just thought this cover sucked all the life out of the wonderful original.

Alfonso Muskedunder is kind of goofy but I really like it.

Ferry is a god; I find his politics reprehensible but the dude's just made too many records I adore to give in to give in to that.

Here's the only statement on his "politics" I could find:
