From the B-side of his recent "Ragysh" 12"... This is really pretty freaking amazing.

amazing track ! everyone i've played it for loves it. there is a beatless version not on the vinyl floating around digitally. A-side is huge as well, been playing it at my club night a lot.

It's totally textbook and totally great. Ragysh is great as well.
― Matt DC, Friday, 3 June 2011 08:56 (fourteen years ago)
Oh for sure, the A-side is totally immaculate as well and I love it. His synths just sound so ridiculously good, so tactile.

― EDB, Friday, 3 June 2011 16:04 (fourteen years ago)
if any 12 this year deserves it's own thread it's this one. both 'ragysh' and 'snooze 4 love' almost clinical in their perfection. 'bonysh' popped up on my ipod the other day and sounded like a great club tool also.

so what sound is this reinterpreting? i'm guessing early warp? lfo, black dog, etc? what else should i look for new and old that's like this?
― jaxon, Saturday, 4 June 2011 23:58 (fourteen years ago)
this doesn't sound like early LFO to me at all. this sounds so clean and so much less ravey. it's very pretty though. reminds me a bit of 'dinamo' by nathan fake
― geeta, Sunday, 5 June 2011 03:04 (fourteen years ago)
this is way more nu disco ish to me
― lebroner (D-40), Sunday, 5 June 2011 08:29 (fourteen years ago)
than warp i mean
what nu disco sounds like this tho? maybe it's just that particular type of synthesizer that's coding as something different for me, but it does seems a lot less immediate than most nu disco
― a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Sunday, 5 June 2011 08:45 (fourteen years ago)
i guess it reminds me a bit of the dfa remix of "rise" by delia & gavin (not sure if that's nu disco either tho)
― a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Sunday, 5 June 2011 08:51 (fourteen years ago)
what i was saying was more of a question than a statement. i want to know what sound the main synth line (not the rhythms) is referencing. to me, this and oar3b seem like they're trying to sound like early warp or early detroit stuff, but i don't know those things that well to know.
― jaxon, Sunday, 5 June 2011 21:36 (fourteen years ago)
Oar3b is much more warp-y, specifically Black Dog. With this one the similarity is there but more like B12 in the melodies, i think.
― jed_, Sunday, 5 June 2011 21:43 (fourteen years ago)
snooze is quite b-12y, that is, Ragyish is more like Lindstrom than anything else although there's maybe a little Jedi Knights in there.
― jed_, Sunday, 5 June 2011 21:48 (fourteen years ago)
IDGI, this sounds like pretty straight-down-the-line nu-balearic to me, albeit perfectly executed and very lovely indeed.
― Matt DC, Monday, 6 June 2011 09:19 (fourteen years ago)
it sort of reminds me of stuff by Lawrence, a bit? somewhere between the autumn-evening-calm of 'somebody told me' and the endless bubbles of the superpitcher rmx of 'along the wire'.
― d(▽_▽)b (c sharp major), Monday, 6 June 2011 09:27 (fourteen years ago)
A Superpitcher remix of Snoove 4 Love would be amazing actually, kinda thinking in the style of his Iridum remix.
― Matt DC, Monday, 6 June 2011 09:29 (fourteen years ago)
It's driving me crazy how the portamento only kicks in on the top 2 notes of the arpeggio. Or maybe he's just put the two notes really close together and not quantized them. But it's a sound that is both jarring and yet slightly exciting, like, I listen out for it every time to see if I can work it out. Manages to be both expected and unexpected. Clever.
― Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 6 June 2011 09:33 (fourteen years ago)
Oh this is nice. Thanks y'all for keeping this bumped until I finally got around to listening.
― Spo-Dee-O-Dee-Dopaliscious! (The Reverend), Monday, 6 June 2011 09:35 (fourteen years ago)
That's my favourite thing about it - I think it's intended as more of an acciaccatura, but it's really evocative.
― Matt DC, Monday, 6 June 2011 09:39 (fourteen years ago)
afaict that is what I know as a "grace note"?
― Spo-Dee-O-Dee-Dopaliscious! (The Reverend), Monday, 6 June 2011 09:44 (fourteen years ago)
What language are you all suddenly speaking.
― Tim F, Monday, 6 June 2011 09:45 (fourteen years ago)
They're just ever so slightly too *off* to be proper grace notes, but it's the slight off-ness of them that makes them such ear candy. And I miss them when the song settles down to its cosmic juggernaut groove, and it's so exciting when they pop back up mid kosmische groove. So more-ish.
― Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 6 June 2011 09:46 (fourteen years ago)
Ha ha, we need Owen in here to explain the proper difference between grace notes, acciaccaturas and appoggiaturae.
I'm still trying to work out if there's a portamento or not. it's delicious.
― Karen D. Tregaskin, Monday, 6 June 2011 09:48 (fourteen years ago)
Grace note is kinda the umbrella term, I just wanted to write "acciaccatura" because it's such a pleasing word.
― Matt DC, Monday, 6 June 2011 09:54 (fourteen years ago)
i only REALLY understood it when i danced to it at a party. and only when i couldn't put my finger on what it 'is' (trainspotting as self defense etc), i realized this is a proper unclassic dance anthem (of 'knights of the jaguar' proportions), but in EXTREME slow motion. it's totally fucking with temporality, i think. it's almost like it has managed to exist only through creating a loophole through time, escaping a nanosecond before the canon of the dance has completely closed.
on this note, let's recall terje's 'eurodans' -- which compared to this sounds a bit amateurish, but still unabashedly euphoric. it produced one of my favorite youtube moments, which still sends immediate party shivers down my spine (00:36):

― owenf, Thursday, 14 July 2011 12:46 (fourteen years ago)
I asked this years ago and nobody responded. :(
I was actually thinking about this yesterday and: Because the Swedish Google translator voice says "tear-yeh," combined with the fact that his track "Terjelator" goes "it's time for the tear-yeh-lator" has led me to conclude this is the correct pronunciation.
― EDB, Thursday, 14 July 2011 13:25 (fourteen years ago)

i played Snooze 4 Love out for the first time last nite. it was at my hotel lobby lounge/bar gig as it was emptying out and there were only a few couples huddled on sofas in dark corners, it was really, really nice. i think i'd only listened to it once before that and then went back to the other two joints on the 12" but i've been listening to it all day today.
related: earlier in the nite, i was playing Todd Todd Terje's "Kul I Pul" and a cocktail waitress came up to me and said "CAN YOU BURN A CD OF THE SONG YOU ARE PLAYING RIGHT NOW"
turns out that a Moroccan Prince is staying at the hotel for a whole month with his 20-person entourage and the hotel staff is bending over backwards waiting on him hand and foot. and i guess dude wanted a copy of that song, i burned him a cd and wrote TODD TERJE - "KUL I PUL" on it and handed it to the cocktail waitress who thanked me profusely.
yo Todd if you get flown to Morocco and put up in a royal palace for a few weeks, you're welcome!!

― jed_, Friday, 26 August 2011 03:52 (fourteen years ago)
There s/b more threads like this, just about hot songs people are into. I feel like it used to happen more often, back in the old days, but now everything's relegated to artist-specific or rolling-genre threads.
Just saying, b/c I probably never would've heard this track otherwise.
― jaymc, Friday, 26 August 2011 04:25 (fourteen years ago)
(Ha, I didn't even read jed's post right above mine.)
― jaymc, Friday, 26 August 2011 04:31 (fourteen years ago)
yeah i kinda agree cuz i like these threads, the reasoning (on my part) for not starting song=specific threads is partly a) fear of tumbleweeds, which has happened a couple of times, b) if i started a new thread for every hot song i was into i'd be starting, like, at least one a day
― lex pretend, Friday, 26 August 2011 07:26 (fourteen years ago)
(i have a really bad sense of what songs are potential crossovers)
Yeah, rolling thread ghettoization typically leads to discussion stagnation, especially with dance music I find.
― qpә (EDB), Friday, 26 August 2011 10:12 (fourteen years ago)
Rolling threads have their uses but I do like threads like this and the Disco En Paradiso one. Even if there's nothing to say about the track and it's just people enthusing.
You really notice the influence of rolling threads when you get to ILM End of Year lists and they're full of songs that different blocs have voted for and everyone else goes "what's that? It's great!"
Also I find dutifully clicking through endless Youtube clips on an ILM thread to be a really joyless way of listening to music, but that might just be me.

seriously, zero sense of what crossover appeal is
― lex pretend, Friday, 26 August 2011 10:39 (fourteen years ago)
There's been quite a lot of love for the Creep/Romy song hasn't there? Or am I just confusing that with Ned and Dan being goths as usual.
― Matt DC, Friday, 26 August 2011 10:42 (fourteen years ago)
it's worth rolling the dice sometimes, was my point
I dug creep/romy too btw but probably most of us who like it would have come across it eventually without that thread - the fact that the WUT WUT WUT thread probably introduced a huge majority of us to the song is what made it Tracks Poll Winner, I reckon.
also so many people would have clicked out of curiosity on a thread titled WUT WUT WUT WUT WUT, not even noticing what board it was on. whereas (feat romy from the xx) would have made heaps of ppl not bother clicking.
― rude ragga beats from the F. U. Schnickens (sic), Friday, 26 August 2011 10:47 (fourteen years ago)
tbh I am totally a goth too
really???? oh god, i don't even have any sense of how to title a thread then. i only called the WUT thread that b/c i thought no one would click anyway, so what the hell. whereas i thought, in light of the huge xx love here, putting 'romy from the xx" in the title would pique people's curiosity.

well, people who think they don't like the xx, I mean. not people who WOULD be interested anyway.

its here
this is a good record i would like to buy it but i don't know what it is
As an old-timer who took a break from, like, '04 pretty much to a few months ago, it's interesting to read this. I like the rolling-genre threads in principle, but it feels as if they often get commandeered by a few folks that are far more knowledgeable about the genre than most others, and I think others get scared off a little from posting (at least, I know this has happened to me). The occasional "I'm really feeling this" thread feels much more inviting...
Also, I'm usually either reading ILM on my phone while I'm "on the road" or while I'm home working (in which case my stereo is on), and the constant stream of YouTubes on the rolling-genre threads is never really something I can make use of. (Ironic, I suppose, that I started this thread then with a YouTube.)

^^^^otm
― markers aurelius (The Reverend), Friday, 26 August 2011 19:10 (fourteen years ago)
Although it happens plenty, I wouldn't say ILM is my main avenue for discovering music, either. For me, it's always been about the discourse on here, the people and their thoughts and personalities. When those rolling-genre threads evolve into long strings of YouTubes with no commentary, that aspect of it is totally lost. I do understand why it happens; there's so much music coming at us from all corners at all times today, it's hard to really sit down and spend time even listening to--much less thinking about or discussing--any one thing, but I have to admit that I fear the FB-style "likes this"-ification of the discourse.

― Number None, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)
you know, i had underrated this, but it's all about context: in the dixon live at robert johnson mix, which slowly builds up to this as the last track, it sounds like the best thing ever
― geeta, Thursday, 15 September 2011 17:48 (fourteen years ago)
Dixon claims the last two tracks on his mix were a mistake and if he could do it over again, he wouldn't use Snooze 4 Love or the one that preceeds it. It does sound great as the closer of the mix though.

haha is any of the press release true?
Terje Olsen is the grandson of the legendary astromechanic Jens Olsen, arguably the greatest clockmaker who ever lived. Although Jens was a Dane, his family eventually relocated to the remote Antarctic island Bouvetøya (Bouvet Island in English), where Terje’s father studied the mating rituals of the seal. It was a strange existence. “We only lived there for a few years,” recalls Terje, “And there was nothing to do other than hunt seals or work on my grandfather’s clocks. It gave me a thirst for mechanics which I brought into music when I built my own synthesisers. And a love of seal products.” Terje refuses to wear any coat not made out of seal and has the largest collection of penguin-skin hats in the world.
He returned to live in a remote Norwegian island. “When you live in a population of only 300 people, you learn to amuse yourself,” laughs Terje. “But something strange happened: Kraftwerk came to record the local seals. It was odd having these four Germans, but in return for studio time I showed them several seal curing techniques.” While Kraftwerk’s opera We Are The Seals still lies unused, it inspired Terje to build his first synthesizer.

hey got a question for digital DJs out there (guess this thread is as good as any) ... is Juno Download always way cheaper than Beatport?? "It's the Arps" is like $10 on Beatport for the full EP on 320 MP3s and only $4.50 on Juno. Just curious if that is typical.
― dmr, Thursday, 19 January 2012 16:10 (thirteen years ago)
I was surprised by that as well.

I'm usually a vinyl guy but have been dabbling in Traktor for the last year or so (and they give you a free gift certificate at Beatport to start you off so that's where I've been going for dance music MP3s)

Inspector Norse on nonstop repeat for the past week, basically
it's better than Snooze 4 Love imo. the big buildup-release part is so euphoric.
― dmr, Thursday, 26 January 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)
Also think Inspector Norse is better than Snooze 4 Love, though my fav bit is right after the buildup release, at 4.07 where the filter closes

― Aerosol, Friday, 3 February 2012 13:43 (thirteen years ago)
Don't get me wrong, I love Inspector Norse and find it really jubilant, but it's not too far away from my personal twee border--a little too close to goofy. Whereas Snooze 4 Love is more restrained and austere, and feels like it has more depth.
― Clarke B., Friday, 3 February 2012 15:10 (thirteen years ago)
I'm not sure I've got the hang of these tracks yet. They're quite fun, but I think I'd need to hear them in a dancefloor situation to truly appreciate them.
― Sounds Of The Baskervilles (dog latin), Friday, 3 February 2012 15:15 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I love Inspector Norse, especially that weird moment about 3:35 or where he goes to another chord, the filters kick in and it goes to a whole nother level, like the camera goes shift-tilt ... or that moment in the Capsule "World of Fantasy" video where they take off. It's a great track - but Snooze 4 Love has something kind of sublime that raises it above almost everything else I've heard in the past year.
― Drexciya's Midnight Runners (Wheal Dream), Friday, 3 February 2012 15:20 (thirteen years ago)
xpost: I think you have to see it like an italo track (which it basically is). that the greatness lies in the fun-ness and "goofiness" of it.

― Number None, Friday, 3 February 2012 15:28 (thirteen years ago)
Good point re: Italo, and I feel that--the bouncy octave-jumping synth bass in particular. I suppose my Italo preferences run more to the super-moody, "night"-themed, desperation-and-longing stuff more than the overtly goofy stuff... Still an awesome track (and the B-side of the 12" is nothing to sneeze at either).

― v for viennetta (c sharp major), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 13:24 (thirteen years ago)
It was called Bodies! It was terrible! Well, the a capella they quietly released later was a bit better, but overall.
Robbie works with some good producers and then does terrible things with them. I don't understand.
― my god it's full of straw (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 13:28 (thirteen years ago)
i remember him doing stuff with ~dance~ producers for Rudebox (well, mostly i remember one soulwax remix. but that was his dance album, no?) but i thought he got burned by that and went back to the reassuring embrace of Trevor Horn?
― v for viennetta (c sharp major), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 13:35 (thirteen years ago)
Nope, my memory has not failed, this was a thing, and it happened.

― my god it's full of straw (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 13:38 (thirteen years ago)
That's a remix though, that's different to him actually taking an existing Aeroplane/Terje track and singing over it.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 13:44 (thirteen years ago)
yeah they just farm those out at that level, don't they? i wouldn't be surprised if robbie williams had never even heard that.
― jed_, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 13:48 (thirteen years ago)
Having checked I think it was produced by Trevor Horn, so Aeroplane didn't have anything to do with the original.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 13:48 (thirteen years ago)
i loved that remix! didnt realize ppl thought it was terrible
― max, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 13:59 (thirteen years ago)
oh wait i never heard the vox. i like the instrumental tho
― max, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 14:00 (thirteen years ago)
looks like it barely got promoed and not released, he v probably hasn't
Horn did the next one but it was their first collab - the one before Rudebox had been completely co-written and produced by Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy, everything before that was The Guy Chambers Era
(Horn and Robbie SOUNDS like a fantastic idea but I never heard a note until clicking that youtube, presumably it sucked)
Orbit and Ronson and Joey Negro and PSB did various tracks on Rudebox, most of it was by "Soul Mekanik" (it says here)
― itt: i forgot that he yells at a butt (sic), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 14:35 (thirteen years ago)

this is really dumb and not in a good way. the only hint of interesting is in the piano breakdown bit, but it has the same nasty sheen off it as lanzarote.
― Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Monday, 24 June 2013 14:14 (twelve years ago)

stop lying to yrselves like norse wasnt 100% also wcjm
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 11:32 (twelve years ago)
norse was wacky but it also was catchy. these are just aimless half-ideas. lanzarote tho is actively nasty, just horrible melodic wandering over a big lumpen beat.
whatever you think of norse there's something about how it was made that managed to give it huge longevity for such a popular record. which isn't huge longevity relative to other things but still.
― Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 26 June 2013 11:37 (twelve years ago)
yeah, tho i think this is less wacky than also inspector norse (which i did love and played a lot) xp
― max, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 11:37 (twelve years ago)
yeah i agree. i don't think it's wacky, prob a sincere enough attempt at doing something latin in his own big way. the bit where the piano line is walloped home is kind of unpleasant tho. it is like bugz in the attic or something a little.
― Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 26 June 2013 11:42 (twelve years ago)

― groovypanda, Sunday, 21 July 2013 19:13 (twelve years ago)
Terje's cartoon disco has always skirted bad taste. That's been the intent since "Eurodans" and the appeal. "Giant robot goose stomping down the street", anyone?
I'd worry about Terje following Aeroplane if he started getting serious, paying homage, etc.
The North Sea track reminds me a bit of Moloko's "Party Weirdo" and other filler off Do You Like My Tight Sweater?. And that turned out okay.

"Four is the magic number: Todd Terje’s next 12” super sound single on Olsen Records finds him going back to his roots with two extended and sparkling synthesizer adventures for club use. “Spiral” and “Q” are preceding the mastermind’s up-and-coming debut album (where both tracks won’t appear) and are the elaborated results from a commissioned concert for Bergen’s 2012 Ekko Festival."

― MikoMcha, Monday, 11 November 2013 16:18 (twelve years ago)
aghhhh Q so good, seems a little formulaic based on the samples but hot damn what a formula.
i hope the album explores more of his atmospheric snooze 4 love (version) tendencies, i'm excited to hear terje doing tracks that do not feature a polka orchestra that aren't serviceable, uptempo dance cuts (i love them too tho don't get me wrong)
― akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 13 November 2013 22:00 (twelve years ago)

― eris bueller (lukas), Wednesday, 13 November 2013 22:59 (twelve years ago)
yes, definitely! i love that reverso 68 remix in particular, but the earlier remixes and edits still seem to come from a much different place... i like most everything this guy puts out but i think he did something distinct with the snooze for loves that would definitely lend itself to the long-player format
― akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Thursday, 14 November 2013 01:16 (twelve years ago)

The payoff on Spiral is pretty good but the pre-buildup middle section is duller than you'd expect from TT - almost amateurish sounding. That hook/repetition shouldn't have made it past the demo phase. Q is solid all around.

I really can't be doing with the corny white tuxedo lounge wibbling in the first third of this, even though I was expecting it from the second I saw the cover.

That's a really great comparison. I was trying to put my finger on who they reminded me of but all I could come up with was Sebastien Tellier in his most playful mode.

I interviewed Todd the other week. Highlights included him telling me that the only reason any man DJs is to "make the ladies wet"
― online hardman, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 13:46 (eleven years ago)
I guess the possibility of him being on my team was too good to be true, and sort of tricky since I'm convinced he's actually a distant relative.
― Eric H., Tuesday, 25 March 2014 14:09 (eleven years ago)
The husk in Ferrys voice is really shocking to me. There's a geriatric buzz, the way WS Burroughs voice would appear in 80s avant music, and it was weird to hear an old man in a modern landscape. I couldn't believe this was Ferry at first- I haven't heard any recent singing from him, and wonder if the Jazz Age was intentionally instrumental because of the change in his tone. Or is he affecting something here?
― Yarl Kastremski (bendy), Tuesday, 25 March 2014 15:51 (eleven years ago)
It's just a really understated and hushed vocal from Ferry, not the kind of thing he typically does.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 21:59 (eleven years ago)
He's lost a lot of range -- it's rasped and gotten more epicene with age -- but as recently as 2010 he didn't sound like this.

Ferry is a god; I find his politics reprehensible but the dude's just made too many records I adore to give in to give in to that.
― a duiving caTCH, a stuolllen bayeeeess (jamescobo), Thursday, 27 March 2014 07:19 (eleven years ago)
Here's the only statement on his "politics" I could find:
"I would support a Cameron government. I have met him, and he’s a bright guy. I hope they do well. I don’t like the way the present Government has done things, most of all putting my son in prison for four and a half months, totally unlawfully ... and that’s not just my opinion: judges, all sorts, have said it was a stitch-up. It was politically motivated. The poor lad just wants to live the traditional country life".[53]
Compared to what we consider "conservatism" in America this comes off rather mild.
― Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 March 2014 10:52 (eleven years ago)
Yeah you must have a low bar for reprehensible politics
― What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Thursday, 27 March 2014 10:57 (eleven years ago)

― abcfsk, Thursday, 27 March 2014 10:59 (eleven years ago)
every day the bar gets lowered. Yesterday the former secretary of defense said a monkey was smarter than Barack Obama.
― Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 March 2014 11:00 (eleven years ago)
No I mean it's weird to see Ferry called reprehensible for being a mild Tory (and I doubt a lifelong one) with a pro-hunting son. He's not exactly Ted Nugent.
The Johnny & Mary cover's weak though.
― What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Thursday, 27 March 2014 11:02 (eleven years ago)

Missed this! Regardless, my mp3s downloaded from Amazon this morning and I'm listening right now. I love the Bryan Ferry thing, although I have to admit I really don't know his other stuff other than Avalon. I especially like the synths that come in after "Runnin' around..." I agree that the early part of the album would benefit from a 73 degree day. It s definitely a harsh contrast with the chilly gloom outside, but I bet I'll be jamming it pretty hard this summer.

Talking about music:
“House and techno DJs — they’re some of the most serious musicians around,” the 32-year-old Norwegian producer says. “The music I really like has a humorous edge to it, and I feel like humor comes when artists have some success. They have the energy to do something funny.”

What am I hearing in the Swing Star tracks? Is it "Love On A Real Train" on part 1? I'm also getting some themes in part 2 that remind me of the stuff that CFCF sampled on Continent. Not sure what it is though.
I'm loving this album btw. I wasn't quite as hot on the Arps, Snooze 4 Love, etc, as you guys were, but I think that Album is very tight. I generally prefer lush, expansive sounds, and this album is certainly lush and expansive.
I don't think the name is too groanworthy. It might be in the hands of a less chill musician, but Terje codes as so pleasantly nonchalant and cool that the Todd Terry riff shouldn't be taken as some kind of overwrought witticism. If anything I think it's a gentle shoutout more than an ironic appropriation. Terje doesn't seem like the type to mock.

― Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 9 April 2014 20:04 (eleven years ago)
seems weird that people would love the album and not be keen on the singles, all the productions under his name feel very much of a piece. i mean 3/4 of it's the arps shows up on the album! it's not like this is one of those situations where a producer makes an album with a vastly different tone than the singles (ie: nico jaar, james blake, etc)
― hug niceman (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 9 April 2014 20:12 (eleven years ago)
kinda love the johnny and mary remake. the music seems uninspired to me, maybe given my memory of the upbeat original. i did like the billowy synths that come in at about the 1:30 mark. and, of course, the nostalgic link this draws in my mind to the original elevates it for me.
but it's ferry's voice that sells it. he has a resigned, sad, gravelly voice that sounds like the way bill murray sounded when murray sang ferry's more than this in lost in translation.
― Daniel, Esq 2, Wednesday, 9 April 2014 20:25 (eleven years ago)
I didn't dislike the singles at all. I just felt a little wanting listening to them, not through any defect of the music itself but perhaps more that it was a little too light, that it ended so soon. I think the weightiness of the album format suits Terje. His music has a pleasantly light quality that might manifest a little on the wispy side in single and EP form. Giving him an album medium balances things out nicely.

Good album but I'm itching now to re-edit it, resequence it and fvck with the tracklisting. (Really doesn't need Norse on the end as an encore, f'rinstance. OTOH, Myggsommer could have fitted in well.) What the hell happened to Ferry's voice? :'(
I got the Rough Trade bonus disk too - there's a slightly longer version of Svensk Sås, which doesn't improve any for the lengthening. Otherwise, just different edits - nice to haves but not essential - and a version of J & M sans Ferry.

I converted Terje's arpeggios into hexadecimal code and found that I had created full sentient artificial intelligence
― nitro-burning funny car (Moodles), Monday, 28 April 2014 18:09 (eleven years ago)
I manipulate where the moving objects (Todd Terje) are located or where they despawn, then I swap the item in Terje's mouth with a flying ?-block (thus the yellow glitched shell) and using a glitch (stunning) to spawn a sprite which isn't used by Terje and since it tries to jump to the sprite routine location, it indexes everything wrong and jumps to a place I manipulated earlier with the sprites (OAM) and because of the P-Switch it jumps to controller registers and from there the arbitrary code execution is started.

This is definitely being promoted through different channels - 6music are giving it a lot of attention and I've not heard them bother with Lindstrom much.
Part of me wishes I was hearing this whole thing for the first time, Inspector Norse would feel like the natural peak of the whole thing rather than the result of an EP awkwardly shunted into a half-finished album.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 22 May 2014 08:32 (eleven years ago)
yeah it's not confusing so much given how accessible it is (i guess real life is no cool just came out too early) but a bit annoying given that i don't think it's half of what terje's capable of. it's sort of field-esque in its crossover to annoying people who display little interest in anything else like it (look at half the people in this thread who i've never seen in any ilm dance thread ever!)
― lex pretend, Thursday, 22 May 2014 09:03 (eleven years ago)

― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 22 May 2014 09:09 (eleven years ago)

― nathey, Thursday, 22 May 2014 09:28 (eleven years ago)
Yeah the dance music threads are tedious because they're by and large just people posting Youtube links, which is okay to browse (although I hate hearing music like that, especially dance music) but don't assume that people aren't interacting with them just because they're not posting.
it's sort of field-esque in its crossover to annoying people who display little interest in anything else like it
Ugh we don't need to do this every time something that isn't straight-up indie becomes popular.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 22 May 2014 09:37 (eleven years ago)
I mean most cosmic disco (including Lindstrom) has minimal interest in promoting itself to people outside its main audience, although Lindstrom has obviously had mad Pitchfork love for years that's partly because of word-of-mouth. Whether that's the labels or the artists or both I don't know.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 22 May 2014 09:39 (eleven years ago)
Like, when Delorean Dynamite and Inspector Norse have been played on the radio, people's ears in my office (people who aren't really that into music at all) pricked up, the same would probably happen in the case of I Feel Space as well.

Same here. If anyone wants to direct me to some other albums that are similar to this or Lindstrom, I'd really appreciate that. They are two of my favourite artists around and I'd love to hear something else similar. It's a little intimidating to go on specialist threads sometimes and as Matt DC pointed out going through a bunch of YouTube links can sometimes be a bit much.

FWIW I like dance music but I have limited occasion to listen to it, since I don't really go to clubs. The only time it kind of makes sense is my occasional driving alone or maybe cleaning with headphones on or something. Whereas this record is dance-ish music I can put on in the office.

Not enough people on ILM know enough about Roxy Music. Yes, Bryan Ferry's a bit of a Tory cunt but he is responsible for some of the best music in the history of music so I have to let him off. That said, anyone else think Johnny and Mary could have been taken from the Future Islands album? It really doesn't sound like him.

― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 30 May 2014 14:23 (eleven years ago)
yeah, he's been quite vocal on things in the past, including some stuff about the magnificence of fascist imagery and stuff like that. his son's been embroiled in a few schemey right-wing things too. it's the one thing that taints his music in my mind. although i did laugh about him reportedly bollocking his son for swearing when they survived an imminent plane accident.
― now I'm the grandfather (dog latin), Friday, 30 May 2014 14:30 (eleven years ago)
I knew about his kids but didn't care either way. The line abut Albert Speer or Riefenstahl was dumber, but he 's a rocker and therefore a fool.

I don't particularly like Roxy Music either and Ferry was the second most-talented person called Bryan/Brian in the band, and come on no one cares about Bryan Ferry solo, and his voice is usually this dreary instrument, but the Johnny & Mary cover is actually quite affecting. A lot of it is down to the arrangement, but Ferry doesn't croon as much as he usually does.
― Matt DC, Friday, 30 May 2014 16:37 (eleven years ago)
You can slate Ferry's voice but I'd never describe it as dreary. One of the most dynamic and idiosyncratic styles in rock, if say. Anyway never mind.

"Snooze" has def grown on me. Almost everything he's done since has been an immediate sugar rush.

it was premature, obv 'inspector norse' is the actual masterpiece, snooze 4 love is a middling house record in comparison

I think we can say Terje has/had more than one masterpiece in him.

Yeah dunno, I had a bad experience at the last John Talabot dj set there. Maybe I'm just getting old.
― ugh (lukas), Friday, 22 August 2014 21:11 (eleven years ago)
I'm guessing that his set in SF tonight will be more expansive and enjoyable than the hour he's booked to play at FYF Fest tomorrow (where I will be seeing him even though the asslord in charge of booking decided his set should overlap with Run The Jewels).

C&P as DJ History's ending very soon:
Hello. For some reason the french (Cyber) thought I was so hot they just HAD to bootleg my edits. Pressed up on vinyl from 192kbit mp3s found online, I doubt their product is worth your money. I didn't care at first, but when I saw 12" number 2 in the shops and also found out number 3 is on it's way I felt the need to say this. So, please don't buy this crap, wait for original Tangoterje Bootlegs™ from your local Tangoterje Bootleg™ provider. Or even the planned LEGAL edit compilation.

I think running it was taking a large amount of time for Bill & Frank so they've decided to close that chapter of of their lives as well as the Low Life parties in order to focus on other things.
Shame but the forum side of it has seen a large drop in traffic the last few years anyway.

― just sayin, Thursday, 4 February 2016 02:02 (nine years ago)
Dunno (can you point me toward that?) but I'm guessing prolly not?
Sounded v contemporary, like it could have come out yesterday, with a female vocalist, and the hook had a prominent sample from what sounded like the 'album time' version of this song that I'm super familiar with so it jumped out at me. Can't remember any lyrics at all tho :/

Did this guy just retire or something? The really excellent new Prins Thomas record is making me pine for Terje. He was completely untouchable for a good four or five years there. It's now been six years since he's dropped something. Is he a family man now on a farm or something? Is he secretly composing his "Ram"? Is he the next Vashti Bunyan and will emerge from his small village in 20 years to drop a masterclass in disco again?
― octobeard, Tuesday, 8 March 2022 17:52 (three years ago)
In my fantasy world alternative timeline Roisin Murphy and Terje collaborate emerge with the greatest dance record of all time and its success brings upon a chain reaction that develops into world peace. No I'm actually sober as I write this, just deeply nostalgic atm
― octobeard, Tuesday, 8 March 2022 17:55 (three years ago)
Yeah he pretty much dropped off the face of the earth. I've also been a bit baffled by this, so after digging awhile back I found a reddit thread asking the same question from a couple of years ago and this was an answer: "Someone asked him whether he has any new music coming soon on his Instagram recently. He said 'nope' :( really broke my heart."
