"Yamaha," but really "Yamaha"/"Nikki Part 2."

jaymc, Friday, 3 June 2011 19:27 (fourteen years ago)

don't know if i wanna help increase the margin of "Yamaha"'s inevitable victory or throw a vote to "Sorry" or "F.I.L.A." or something. more and more this seems like a big drop off from the first 2 albums, though.

a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Friday, 3 June 2011 20:21 (fourteen years ago)

One of those records I enjoy much more when I'm listening to than when I'm think about it; it just doesn't linger in the head like the first two. It's great for what it is, but I do hope he challenges himself or shakes things up a bit on the next one (which, as I recall, drops in four days, right?)

Evan R, Friday, 3 June 2011 20:31 (fourteen years ago)

oh, The Love Intravenous isn't dropping anytime soon

a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Friday, 3 June 2011 20:33 (fourteen years ago)

for someone who likes this guy a lot it's pretty shameful i haven't heard 13-17

i only really feel like returning to FILA or Turnt Out tho tbh. i still think this album is a step down from the other two.

goole, Friday, 3 June 2011 20:36 (fourteen years ago)

lol actually reading the thread helps too since everyone is saying that now

goole, Friday, 3 June 2011 20:37 (fourteen years ago)

this is definitely a rare album where the bonus tracks are not only worth hearing but make the album as a whole better

agreed. i do think old heads started to get tired of his schtick, to a degree

lebroner (D-40), Friday, 3 June 2011 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think it's necessarily like a big lapse of quality or craft, but the number of genuinely memorable/addictive songs is imo a big falloff from the first two albums

a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Friday, 3 June 2011 21:14 (fourteen years ago)

that's the sense in which i don't think it's a fall-off - like i can hear how the songwriting perhaps isn't as on point as on the first two (it's really more about the production imo) but despite that there are only a few songs that aren't memorable/addictive to me

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Friday, 3 June 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

theres about as many that i skip as on #2

lebroner (D-40), Friday, 3 June 2011 21:34 (fourteen years ago)

It was a minor step down from the first two imo.

went with SI remix, though it could just as easily have been FILA, abyss, turnt out or veteran. shit, or yamaha even. great album. i joined late, so i don't have to notice any drop-off.

have found, sadly, that love king is not what u wanna spring on people who claim to hate modern R&B, in the hope of changing minds. it tends only to harden the heart.

Terius, on what the new material he's producing for Bieber will sound like: "“Somewhere between like Fergie and Jesus, somewhere in between there. If I can get away with edgy, I would love it.”

Tim F, Saturday, 4 June 2011 06:59 (fourteen years ago)

xp well i like that in the context of the album that "turn out" feels really frivolous -- i don't think that if terius sung it in his 'normal' voice that it would feel any less so -- i understand how his falsetto might put someone off but as someone who likes the song, it's also irrelevant in the sense that my enjoyment would not be affected by a change in his voice

b.o.s.e. (banned ones still envy) (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 4 June 2011 07:01 (fourteen years ago)

How is everyone ignoring the majesty that is Veteran? It's like the best R. Kelly song Terius has ever written. Double good once Kells jumps on the remix.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Saturday, 4 June 2011 07:04 (fourteen years ago)

really i think there's an argument for "sex intelligent (remix)" and "nikki part 2" really encapsulating why i love this album - they're certainly not good songcraft in the traditional sense and they don't even make all that much sense if you isolate them, so i guess you could say they're evidence of LK's weakness, but the gaseous production and the way the lyrics take in all of terius' most dreamish characteristics make them totally essential to the album

Spo-Dee-O-Dee-Dopaliscious! (The Reverend), Saturday, 4 June 2011 07:22 (fourteen years ago)

"abyss" is really self-conscious about how it goes for the ~epic~ feel but succeeds despite that - i think that's the reason it's not the absolute top tier of this album though

am i the only person who absolutely adores "florida university"?

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Saturday, 4 June 2011 07:23 (fourteen years ago)

the block i usually skip is panties to the side/turnt out/february love (latter two not actively bad but i don't really NEED to listen to them ever)

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Saturday, 4 June 2011 07:24 (fourteen years ago)

I don't like Yamaha at all, I don't want to hear him doing songs like that really, it's not why I listen to The Dream. I genuinely skip Yamaha if it ever comes on during shuffle or whatever, I actively dislike it. Anyone feel me on this??? (Didn't think so)

I think Make Up Bag might be my favourite track on this...I love the Sex Intelligents and All Black Everything too. I fucking love this album though generally, two or three duds but easily my most listened to record.

Suggest Banter (Local Garda), Saturday, 4 June 2011 10:14 (fourteen years ago)

Also: LVM represents more a triumph of production than this one.

OTM, that's why i voted for the "sex intelligent" remix. love the way it strips terius' sound to its most otherworldly essentials, just glossy pillow talk and cosmic drift. doesn't matter at all to me that it's not the album's strongest piece of songwriting, the atmosphere is incredible.

Agreed, although I'd argue it is a good example of songwriting -- a second stab at the song that improves on the original.

no! i love that song to death, mentioned it a couple times in the main love king thread and don't know why i didn't highlight here. it's certainly better than "yamaha", my afterthought candidate. funny, it's almost the opposite of the "sex intelligent" remix, in that it gets by on traditional songwriting and storytelling, bears hardly a trace of the dark, dreamy atmosphere that characterizes other album highlights. get the feeling that most here see it as a throwaway track.

torn between "veteran" and the buildup to the second chorus in "abyss"

Bastards of Young Dro, Sunday, 5 June 2011 05:21 (fourteen years ago)

I really like: Veteran, Sorry, Yamaha, Love King and Make Up Bag quite a lot, but it's Abyss for gotdam sure. That huge build up til the piano creeps in and the beat drops and the vocals swell is so tasty.

FILA is a fine song, but it sounds like a less robust version of Rockin That.

LK took longer to appreciate than the first two, but the payoff was/is there.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Sunday, 5 June 2011 05:47 (fourteen years ago)

these threads are basically the superfans plus a few people like me and rtc who obviously own and enjoy the albums but just aren't THAT into it, not exactly an epic clash of taste

yeah, i'm in the non-superfan camp. i'm a fan, sure, but all things in moderation. of the songs i haven't mentioned, glad the title track is getting some attention. it's not among my very favorite tracks, but it's damn good, and was mostly ignored in the initial ILM appraisals, iirc. don't get "make up bag", though, still not on board w that.

This was sorta my point but n/m

Tim F, Sunday, 5 June 2011 10:34 (fourteen years ago)

"Make Up Bag" is a drab shitty song and the fact that the guy's gorgeous wife divorced him for cheating just as it was flopping as a single makes its lyric even more odious.

a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Sunday, 5 June 2011 11:42 (fourteen years ago)

haha, yes I agree with all of that.

Tim F, Sunday, 5 June 2011 11:43 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno, if i had to worry about the lyrical content i wouldn't listen to lots of things, i think the production is really great on "make up bag"...

the block i usually skip is panties to the side/turnt out/february love (latter two not actively bad but i don't really NEED to listen to them ever)

Same here - the first is actively awful and the other two I like but their relative restraint feels kinda out of place against the preposterous excess of the rest of the album. In a certain mood though I go directly for Turnt Out and February Love on their own though.

Veteran is magnificent and it still annoys me that Terius included Panties To The Side instead of it.

I kinda think of Nikki Pt 2 and Abyss as the same song, they don't really work on their own. Wish they were one track really.

Matt DC, Sunday, 5 June 2011 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

veteran is amazing yeah...forgot about that in my deliberations.

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Sunday, 5 June 2011 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

panties to the side is the song ive most warmed up to after initially always skipping it; now i kinda group it w/ 'ditch that' or 'hit it on the road' as overt standalone-type tracks that are good to drive or jog to

johnny crunch, Sunday, 5 June 2011 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

like "panties to the side" and never got the hate. it's gross, sure, but unlike "make up bag", justifies itself musically, imo.

orchestral pygnoeuvres in zee park (contenderizer), Sunday, 5 June 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

i don't really like any of terius' song in that vein - "panties", "ditch that", "WFY"

But Make Up Bag has those amazing watery organ noises whereas the music is the worst thing about Panties To The Side. WFY has awesome momentum, Panties To The Side just waddles along awkwardly.

Matt DC, Sunday, 5 June 2011 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

"panties" is aight but the other two are a+ terius classics xp

Spo-Dee-O-Dee-Dopaliscious! (The Reverend), Sunday, 5 June 2011 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

i said this when the album came out but stylistically "make up bag" is more in the "i luv your girl" lineage than the other 3 i mentioned - each is not among the strongest songs on its album and sort of fucks up the flow, but each sounds better outside of album context. "i luv your girl" >>> "make up bag" tho

positive rapper (k3vin k.), Sunday, 5 June 2011 17:55 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't quite love "I Luv Your Girl" on the album, but it's prob my favorite single of his as a radio jam.

"Make Up Bag" isn't as strong tho.

Spo-Dee-O-Dee-Dopaliscious! (The Reverend), Sunday, 5 June 2011 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

imo it doesn't touch "shawty is da shit!", which is still his best single i think, but yeah outside of album context it works much better

i love "f.i.l.a." but would never have picked it as the most likely to upset "yamaha"!

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Saturday, 18 June 2011 07:59 (fourteen years ago)

find it fairly amusing f.i.l.a. wins when make up bag was deeemed somehow offensive or "odious" by a few people. pretty sure "quiet woman i bought you a make up bag", as offensive as that may be pales in significance to pretty much the entire f.i.l.a. lyric. dumb and all as opening that can of worms is anyway.

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Saturday, 18 June 2011 09:19 (fourteen years ago)

i find it funny that any of terius' songs are being judged on offensiveness at all, the man has always been a cad

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Saturday, 18 June 2011 09:29 (fourteen years ago)

yeah exactly. i hardly think "oh look at his horrible habit of buying 5k make up bags to stop his gf suspecting he has cheated" is the sudden appearance of a monster we never knew.

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Saturday, 18 June 2011 09:33 (fourteen years ago)

his caddish tendencies are always balanced out by his inadequacies in any case. "make up bag" is a massive faux pas, and indicative of a man with no clue about how relationships work, which is why it's funny i guess? but it's not that great a song, relative to the rest imo.

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Saturday, 18 June 2011 09:37 (fourteen years ago)

I love the-dream in lovestruck mode, but find his "how to be a playa" tunes mostly off-putting. "offensive" may be the wrong word.

Tim F, Saturday, 18 June 2011 10:52 (fourteen years ago)

i was WAY more off-put by almost all of Usher's Confessions. it's almost as if he set the groundwork for Chris Brown years later -- "here's how to spin something hurtful you did to someone else and make it all about you!"

why i am an anarcho-sandwich artist (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 June 2011 10:58 (fourteen years ago)

is terius ever really lovestruck? more often luststruck, surely, and that fits pretty naturally with the "how to be a playa" side of things

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Saturday, 18 June 2011 11:05 (fourteen years ago)

i mean, how often does he actually get starry-eyed about a girl's personality as opposed to her titties like woo-oo-oo, her booty like woo-oo-oo.

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Saturday, 18 June 2011 11:07 (fourteen years ago)

yeah exactly. i hardly think "oh look at his horrible habit of buying 5k make up bags to stop his gf suspecting he has cheated" is the sudden appearance of a monster we never knew.

― MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Saturday, June 18, 2011 5:33 AM (1 hour ago) Bookmark

that's a pretty loose characterization of what i said about the song and fwiw FILA was never a single so i never really heard it enough to pay attention to the whole lyric and catch the cheating angle of it.

some dude, Saturday, 18 June 2011 11:22 (fourteen years ago)

well in the lyrics to "make up bag" there isn't even necessarily a cheating angle. he denies cheating and it's arguably just as much about him being out partying and his wife thinking he has cheated, which obv like in the context of every other song is prob not unreasonable.

i mean yes telling the guys "oh just buy her something" is pretty lame but i've bought presents for gf when i fucked up before, it's not monstrous patriarchy or something. obv if it's a case of "oh there goes another 5k for a makeup bag" that's a bit different but i just think "odious" is a bit strong.

the utterly triumphant "SO SHE LET ME DO HERRR" in fila seems fairly obviously more offputting to me, if i thought about it, but i don't really seek people i morally agree with in music.

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Saturday, 18 June 2011 11:29 (fourteen years ago)

luststruck then, and I think there's a big difference in feel between those tunes and the tunes where he's just focused on how great he is.

some dude, Saturday, 18 June 2011 11:47 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it is pretty funny. i said if i thought about it or decided to try and find things i was put off by. i find the "make up bag" funny too though, like he's imparting this sage advice to all the men, "i'm such a genius no girl has ever realised my amazing ploy."

MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE LIVING HERE!! (Local Garda), Saturday, 18 June 2011 12:19 (fourteen years ago)

some dude, Saturday, 18 June 2011 13:48 (fourteen years ago)

have this same conflict re Make Up Bag in particular - love the sound, hate the sentiment (don't give a fuck about its technical quality as a song), will always delight and frustrate in equal measure. same goes for the title track (dope piano chords and self harmonies, awful shit like "sorry ladies but there ain't nothing like a smart bitch"). but it's 'in character' etc. and maybe prince wrote something just as bad one time and i've just not noticed.

blueski, Saturday, 18 June 2011 14:46 (fourteen years ago)
