what artist, if any, is worth doing an ILM tracks poll?

this seems to be the big trend now on ILM, we've had polls for the best songs by R.E.M., Blur, Pavement, the Manic Street Preachers -- frankly I think these things are pretty unnecessary, and if they are done, they should be for an artist with a really huge catalog with more than just a few obvious peaks (and if not, a top 60-something songs is total overkill), and preferably something besides '80s and '90s alt/indie touchstones for a change. i threw together a list of ideas that mostly fit the former criteria, if not necessarily the latter, along w/ some other bands that have come up or invariably will. I'd like to encourage people to vote for "nothing" though.

such a female-heavy list!

anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:49 (fourteen years ago)

The Beatles, The Cure, Bowie, GBV, Zeppelin, Radiohead, VU. Voted for The Beatles.

nate woolls, Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:49 (fourteen years ago)

The Ramones??

Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:50 (fourteen years ago)

off this list, Prince or The Cure easily

anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:51 (fourteen years ago)

what female artist would even get a decent voter turnout though -- maybe Kate Bush?

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

MADONNA.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

Taylor Swift has 3 albums now, i guess she's ready

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

ok Madonna was a dumb omission -- i meant to put her in there and forgot

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

fwiw i am speaking in terms of ILM's enthusiasm for female artists, not my own

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:56 (fourteen years ago)

I would vote in most of these and enjoy all of them. polling producers seems like a great idea. voted Timbaland

Lee Perry? Phil Spector? is anyone else big enough for this? Marley Mar? Teddy Riley? Thom Bell? Holland–Dozier–Holland?

gospodin simmel, Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:57 (fourteen years ago)

other, beach boys

iatee, Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:58 (fourteen years ago)

A PJ Harvey poll I'd def. vote in.

nate woolls, Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:58 (fourteen years ago)

You could probably get a decent turnout for a Janet Jackson poll, too.

Bjork has the catalog but I'm not sure as many ppl are invested in her.

Also maybe Sade and PJ Harvey, or a Kathleen Hanna poll (maybe cheating?)

anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:59 (fourteen years ago)

Voted kast, after that prob prince or jay -- we've already had enough Beatles polls

J0rdan S., Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:59 (fourteen years ago)

i'd love a beach boys poll.

also, i love these polls - great excuse to trawl through and discuss bands a lot of people like.

Sade? on ILM? that's reaching.

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:00 (fourteen years ago)

I was actually thinking of a timbo ballot poll the other day -- they kinda thing would prob be more fun

J0rdan S., Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:00 (fourteen years ago)

i'd vote in all these radiohead and talking heads polls too. and boo radleys, obv.

the Sandalled Vandal (dog latin), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

Probably wouldn't vote in it but would definitely follow a Joni poll.

cloaca flocka flame (NickB), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:02 (fourteen years ago)

yeah a producer is stretching the 'single artist' concept but would totally be more fun, especially Timbo. or maybe Eno, i should've put him in there too.

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:02 (fourteen years ago)

seriously, radiohead would really suit a poll - plenty of material spanning several years and styles. lots of b-sides and obscurities for people to geek over. no consensus album (really).

the Sandalled Vandal (dog latin), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:02 (fourteen years ago)

Joni Mitchell another possibility

da croupier, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:03 (fourteen years ago)

Destiny's Child would get a big turnout, even bigger if you included the solo careers and the juggernaut that is ILM's feelings about Beyonce.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:03 (fourteen years ago)

another write-in = aphex, obv.

seeing all the polls done so far my reaction has been part eye-roll, part relief that i don't have to invest any time in them

there are only a few artists on this list i'd change that for tbh (jay-z, neptunes, timbaland)

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:05 (fourteen years ago)

after watching a Pavement poll get more voters than a poll of the entire genre of hip hop, attempting a Beyonce/DC poll would just be depressing tbh

Kinda with lex on that one. Don't like the idea of the polls, even for artists I like.

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:06 (fourteen years ago)

joni mitchell and kate bush seem obvious choices. pj harvey too, but it always feels a bit odd doing massive retrospective projects when the artist is still so active (and still at their creative peak, so to speak, unlike eg timbaland).

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:06 (fourteen years ago)

jay and kast would be super fun. and peej/bush/madonna/joni as people have mentioned. wu maybe too discussed already on ilm. coltrane/prince would be the nuts. dr. dre only has two albums and i don't know if he has enough production classics to really do this... maybe an nwa members poll. just don't seem to care about the indie or canon rock choices - maybe bowie.

overall though, on a learning and interest basis - stevie.

my choice from who is missing from the poll: GIL SCOTT HERON

There was a Pavement poll? Ugh.

But point taken. Thing is, the posters who love the stuff I'd love to see a top 50 of are precisely the ppl who would never participate in such a boring fanboy exercise as writing out ballots and spreadsheets.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:07 (fourteen years ago)

I like the idea of all these fine. I didn't engage in the pavement poll but found it neat to see the final list. I suggest someone else start all these polls at once and deliver me the stats forthwith

no harm obviously, but -- and i've said this before so excuse me repeating myself -- a lot of these artists you could pretty easily whittle down to a regular poll thread of their 50 most beloved songs without all the fanfare. also elevating some indie band that was only together for a decade to the level of oh we need to rank half their catalog is just kinda ridic.

Prince or Timbo would probably be the most fun -- i'd probably get the most personal enjoyment out of a Sonic Youth one but as i've said it'd be nice to depart from the indie canon

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:09 (fourteen years ago)

ILX goes through these phases of liking certain kinds of discourse WWAAAAAYYYY too much for a period and then forgetting all about it.

I mean, I certainly prefer these kinds of polls, which tend to keep to 2 maybe 3 threads, easily ignored, to that weird hockey league thing it went through a couple of years back where you couldn't even load new answers for the 200 threads about, like, what was the best kind of sandwich. :-/

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:12 (fourteen years ago)

what's wrong with letting people have fun the way they want? since when has ilm been "indie-centric"?

a lot of these artists you could pretty easily whittle down to a regular poll thread of their 50 most beloved songs without all the fanfare

the fanfare is all the fun - it's about the process, not the result, an excuse to get reacquainted with an old favourite that you might not have thought too much about recently, to share the craic with some like-minded people.

also complaining about a preponderance (hardly) of threads you have no interest in seems like the weakest first-world problem imaginable (speaking as someone who thought the plethora of rolling metal threads was RIDICULOUS)

i love the smell of facepalm in the morning (ledge), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:13 (fourteen years ago)

why are people surprised that a poll that required a knowledge of like 100 songs got more votes than a poll for an entire genre. I wouldn't be shocked if the Pavement poll would have more votes than an ALL-TIME INDIE ROCK poll, which sounds like a more frustrating list to compile

da croupier, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:13 (fourteen years ago)

I partially didn't vote in the hip-hop poll because I didn't have time, but a large proportion of it was that I felt like my choices would be belittled and my voice dismissed by the group of regulars who dominate that genre on this board. So I'm not that surprised that the Pavement poll was more popular. Didn't vote in that one either, mind you, but I'm not a fan of the single-artist old-style polls.

Mr. Patrick Batman (WmC), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:16 (fourteen years ago)

the thing is to take part in this kind of exhaustive poll, you really need to know the ins and outs of an act's catalogue pretty well - which rules me out of most older "canon" acts bar a joni here or madonna there. i'd totally be up for björk (and would think there's definitely enough love for that to be viable) or tori amos (to whom ilm has pretty much been entirely resistent, bafflingly - surely the only artist for whom the tim finney stamp of approval has failed to work - we did album polls for her and garnered like 6 voters in each :( )

I dunno. Lex's point about having to know the whole work of an artist is pretty salient. There are bands I like but simply don't know in depth enough to vote. (Thinking about Bjork and PJ there - I know certain periods really well and the rest is a blank so I wouldn't want to bias a poll.)

"Would care enough to vote" is thin enough considering I couldn't even get excited enough to vote in the Blur poll, and that was a band I was obsessed with for many years... Care enough to run, would be, oh, let's see, probably only Aphex Twin and I wouldn't do that because I can't stand the majority of Aphex Twin fans enough to want them to have my email address. Ha!

Actually, the results thread was the most entertaining thing about the Blur poll.

If you don't know all the PJHarv/Bjork, then the stuff that ends up in the final poll that you don't know, is going to get some praise and recommendation which could lead to those who don't know the particular track, seeking it out.

mm?

Mark G, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:26 (fourteen years ago)

since when has ilm been "indie-centric"?

since always. that isn't a bad thing or a big deal per se and ILM is probably broader than most places. it is the natural effect of ILM based on how it came about and the people it's mostly made up of. i think it has moved away from that more over ten years tho so 90s Indie Band tracks polls do feel like a throwback (plus i figured they wouldn't actually get much interest so it just seemed like pointless cluttering but i could be wrong re turnout).

The Pavement poll that ended yesterday was a glorious run-down of tracks, a whole band's career, people going back in time not just returning to the music but also life. Presented in a great way by Johnny Fever, unpredictable outcome, fun was had by all. If you don't like Pavement that's tough then, sorry it makes you depressed seeing it top the 'new answers' list. But that poll and it's countdown really has been an ILM highlight for me, with a great turn-out and participation too. What more could you want?

Trying to think what artists I'd both care and be knowledgeable enough to participate. Without getting nailfiles at dawn over the Supremes or anything. Heck, I'd love to see a 60s Girlgroups poll, but that's a genre poll not an artist so I don't ever have to choose between the Crystals and the Ronettes.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:28 (fourteen years ago)

tbh I can rarely be arsed to actually vote in any of those send in a whole big ordered list type polls but I have no problem with other people doing them, or with reading the results threads if I have any passing interest in the band.

What more could you want?

well I took part in the hip-hop, blur, and pavement polls cos I'm really into all three. The hiphop def lead me to hearing some great stuff that I had blanked on (black moon, camp lo, smoothe da hustler) and the blur and pavement ones kinda gave me good vibes. Out of the list at the top The Cure is the one that I'd find hardest but best 'qualified' to take part in and the Prince one is the one that would be most helpful in identifying which stuff I should get acquainted with given that I haven't been paying attention to his stuff for a decade.

the Sandalled Vandal (dog latin), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:35 (fourteen years ago)

my vague metric for these things is "if this artist has a peak period of 3 or fewer albums that will dominate the top 20 songs then it's not really worth doing," which is totally the case for Pavement

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:35 (fourteen years ago)

I enjoyed the pavement poll even though I didn't participate (mostly because I felt there was too much material I was unfamiliar with). it got me to listen to wowee zowee, which I had owned for several years but never really gave enough of a chance.

I wish there were polls like this for other bands I'm not overly familiar with, if only to incite me to dig deeper into their catalog.

Matt DC, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:40 (fourteen years ago)

LBI that's fair enough re the success of the Pavement poll. It's just the combination of numerous polls (not really interested in big ILM polls anymore) and focus on these kinds of bands irking me.

Just because "Summer Babe" won and "Gold Soundz" placed high, didn't mean the rest of the poll was predictable. There were lots of non-album tracks and rarities, very cool to see which ones were the most loved.

the fey bloggers are onto the zagat tweets (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

I voted in the Blur poll, didn't in the Pavement poll and won't vote in the Manics. However even though I'm not a Pavement fan the enthusiasm and debate made it an interesting read. I don't know why some dude's so worked up about them, it's not as if they're hard to ignore. Matt DC's one at a time option seems a good compromise.

I agree the choices so far have been too indiecentric but those bands will soon be worked through and other bands/producers will get their chance to shine.

ps I bags the Pet Shop Boys poll.

One-at-a-time is important I feel.

to take part in this kind of exhaustive poll, you really need to know the ins and outs of an act's catalogue pretty well

No! You just have to take part! Once enough people join in, the crowdsourcing element means any nonsense gets ironed out. I didn't do the Pavement one because I couldn't fill a ballot, but I did do the hiphop one despite lack of knowledge - it was sad to see all a hoy hoy's efforts going to waste for a while because people weren't stepping up.

Like, in the Blur poll, ppl were so enthusiastic about this entire swath of Blur that I never bothered with that I began to think that I actually might like the band outside of a few random songs; as it turned out when I started digging that wasn't really the case, but reading people's discussion of stuff was really fun.

Also, silly me thought that no one was mentioning "This Is A Low" because no one liked it, not because it was a predestined #1, lol.

anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

I would also happily participate in a Belle & Sebastian one, loads of songs in that catalogue. I am another person who didn't vote in the hip hop albums because it would've been, you know, Jay-z, Wu Tang, Rob Base and Positive K. Figured it was better to leave for people who *know* hip hop well. I *know* Blur well so included myself in that poll!

Joni is a good choice. Beach Boys, Bjork, Bowie, Jay-z, Pixies.. I voted Radiohead as that's another catalogue I know really well (lol 15 year old in 1997).

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:08 (fourteen years ago)

AND the poll roll-out gives a structure and rhythm to the discussion, perhaps artificially extending the amount of time the participants in the results thread spend talking about and listening to the artist(s) in question.

As far as I can see there's been about seven threads devoted to single artist write in polls over the past month. It's hardly overloading the board, there's usually about half a dozen 'radio button' polls finishing each day.

Cluster the boots (Billy Dods), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:10 (fourteen years ago)

What was the structure of the Pavement poll? 3 days to vote, 3 days' reveal? I think a 2-day reveal would be fine for all these, whether it's a top-50 or top-60.

Mr. Patrick Batman (WmC), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:12 (fourteen years ago)

I do think nominations are a little silly for single artist polls; check a discography for yr eligible tracks.

There are also bands I want to do (or see) completely skewed, counter-intuitive polls to force critical re-evaluation on segments of material, like a post-1990 Depeche Mode poll or a no singles Orbital poll (obv not with a top 50, lol)

people find the results roll-out process so seductive (increasingly so in presentation terms too e.g. v positive reaction to video screen grabs with text on them for tracks ) that i do think most polls are created more for this (intensified communal) experience than a genuine curiosity about and value of the results (in most cases). so yeah journey > destination, that's more an observation than a criticism (i was and still am pretty into the presentation aspect like a maniac - been working on a site to display list/poll results in cool ways for ages but never finished because actual important stuff gets in the way).

an artist-specific poll could be good for someone who wants a quick easy guide to that artist but not necessarily more than a S/D, C/D, POX or just general discussion thread about them.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah but a load of polls on the front page at once makes it harder to see the rest, and causes niche interest threads to drop off New Answers more quickly. Also, the more polls there are going on at once the less likely they are to get wide participation and comment.

Kinda amazed the first post on that thread wasn't someone immediately going I CLAIM INSANE CLOWN POSSE.

Well, there is that point where the voting date End has passed.

Do not be beholdern on the results thread starting, as it could happen that the results never happen! (remember that 80s poll?)

Mark G, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:44 (fourteen years ago)

Things these polls do:
1. Take two threads each, one for announcing the voting itself and another for the results.
2. Spur discussion about a band some people love, some people like, and some people are simply curious about. As noted upthread, the scheduled rollout may artificially prolong the discussion, but it's prolonged nonetheless.
3. Crown a winner! Yippee! But as also noted upthread, finding out what wins isn't the fun part. The journey is.

Things these polls DON'T do:
1. Clutter up the board if done one at a time. See previous item #1.
2. Force anyone to participate.
3. Proclaim superiority of one style over another. For example, just because I organized a poll for "Pavement" doesn't mean you can't organize a poll for "Destiny's Child/members thereof". I'll be interested in that one even if you aren't interested in mine.

did geir send in a list? how did that go over?

I didn't in the rap poll, but probably could have constructed some ballot consisting of largely G-funk, "The Message", "Planet Rock" and a couple of Outkast tracks.

Putting aside personal feelings, and cutting slack for "Well, I don't know their music at all, but I suppose they have a devoted following," the two names on that list where I must be completely out to lunch are the Boredoms and the Boo Radleys.

really think AC/DC should have a trax poll. I mean this is one rock band where fans get uber excited over individual songs and the range of opinion is so varied.

i don't think the range of opinion is THAT varied -- they're a very popular singles band and there'd be a small minority championing albums tracks, but mostly it would just be a mildly unpredictable battle of Bon Scott era vs. Back In Black

said it before and got the usual thoughtless withering put-down in three words from some daily posting lifers but...

"I love Polls" should be a separate board.

Don't know who first asked for it anyway or felt the function was needed but as overnight changes go it's been pretty effective at turning 1/3 of the board to shit overnight and lowering the quality here in general. blank, Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:09 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not saying that stevie et al don't have a lot of good songs, i'm saying that it's boring to poll an artist when everyone agrees that EVERY song an artist has done is indisputable awesome.

blank, Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

I'd been toying with doing a Suede poll to tie-in with the reissues, but nbs beat me to it with the blur one. I'd've thought a dozen would be a big enough ballot for them, and no need to run down the top 100 either - 20 or 30 will be fine. Depends on the band and especially level of participation though.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:13 (fourteen years ago)

I think it would be legit to adjust the numbers for a smaller discography. Personally I wouldn't have a problem having a 30-spot ballot for VU. xxpost

i already otm'd this post but i will point to it again as an encapsulation of my feelings: what artist, if any, is worth doing an ILM tracks poll?

obviously i can't stop people from doing these polls and wouldn't if i could, but given the copycat tendency of the board where every 'new' thread format tends to beget variations for every britpop and indie band in existence, i dunno i figure it can't hurt to initiate a conversation about this latest trend as it begins to take off and look at whether we wanna pump the brakes or figure out the best way to go about it or what artists to focus on. that's why i made this thread suggesting artists as well as asking the question of whether we should do these at all.

some dude, Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:42 (fourteen years ago)

I think it was a valid question, and, indeed, the point of it was to highlight the need to restrict the bands chosen to the ones that fit one or more profiles....

Like, the Boo Radleys failed because there's not enough potential voters.

Oasis failed because who cares?

Mark G, Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:57 (fourteen years ago)

if we did Oasis I'd reg 300 socks to make "Wibbling Rivalry" the winner

why i am an anarcho-sandwich artist (Neanderthal), Sunday, 19 June 2011 00:00 (fourteen years ago)

for all i know the Boo Radleys might have a good number of voters -- the automated poll for one of their albums last year got almost 40 votes. it just seems weird that for years and years there were only organized polls for like, whole years and decades and genres, and now that the focus is narrowing we're going straight to REALLY narrow subjects.

also i mean some bands like Oasis could have a billion fans and be around for a hundred more years but any poll of their discog would just be the obvious picks from their first 2 albums. subjects ideally shouldn't have just one consensus peak period.

Hinklepicker, Sunday, 19 June 2011 02:38 (fourteen years ago)

Every Beatles song has already been polled at least once, and in most cases probably 4 or 5 times by now...

The Pavement vs Smashing Pumpkins thread went over well, so I think an SP poll would probably get lots of voter interest.. Out of the artists who were arbitrarily nom'd Wu-Tang is the only one I would participate in.. I would be interested to see results from GBV or YLT polls since I'd like to become better acquainted with their enormous catalogs.

I enjoy the format of these polls, even when I don't participate - the slow run-down of results, with images or youtubes and plenty of room for discussion. I think they are more likely to unearth an obscure gem a casual listener was unaware of than a standard ILM poll.

It's really not that hard to ignore them if you don't like them.

Too many at once would imo lead to lower participation levels and they'd die out of their own accord - I see no reason to moderate the numbers (esp on the whim of one moderator going "I think I might enforce this").

I was surprised at the mileage the Blur and Manics polls got. I thought doing a Mary Chain one might be fun but changed my mind as there probably isn't the breadth or depth there. Cure, Kate Bush, Prince & Madonna would all be worthwhile imo. I'd also enjoy reading through the results of a few others mentioned here even if I didn't feel qualified to take part - I treat them as recommendation threads.

Not sure how successful the manics one is going to be xp - there are only about a dozen posters on that thread (i.e. vote, and help a brother out). That said, Pavement getting 40 ballots amazed me, especially when the whole of hip hop didn't.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 12:46 (fourteen years ago)

Pavement one got 60 votes, didn't it?

cr?m margera (some dude), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 12:53 (fourteen years ago)

ok 57 to be exact

cr?m margera (some dude), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 12:54 (fourteen years ago)

Well I'm astonished. Not complaining, note - I figured it wasn't for me & let it pass me by.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 12:57 (fourteen years ago)

was kind of hilarious, i thought, given that people complained / lolbrits at the blur poll, that anyone thought the correct next thing to do was ... pavement

thomp, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 13:14 (fourteen years ago)

i know right!

cr?m margera (some dude), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 13:17 (fourteen years ago)

the essence of the American spirit right there

chupacabra - a delicious burrito (DJP), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 13:29 (fourteen years ago)

Malkmus complained that when Pavement was doing press for a UK tour (97? 98?) all they were asked about was their opinion on Blur.

President Keyes, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 13:31 (fourteen years ago)

pretty sure johnny fever explicitly said that he picked pavement because they were sorta the u.s. equivalent of blur. just sayin

so confused (blank), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

and the people complaining about lolbrits polls are the same people complaining about any old ballot poll, right?

so confused (blank), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

I couldn't find this thread when I posted in the thread where we suggest/plan which polls should go in which order, but I posted an .xls which should make this polling business easier for anyone who wants to play. Yay!!

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

lol

blueski, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 23:56 (fourteen years ago)

"nothing" defeated 82-19 by my count.

Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 23:58 (fourteen years ago)

In that case we need to have a "something" poll

cr?m margera (some dude), Thursday, 23 June 2011 04:51 (fourteen years ago)

I'll start a Stevie Wonder poll regardless of these results.

one month passes...

or Sandy Denny. Her oeuvre is a sprawling mess filled with side projects, appearances on others' records, one-shot bands, incomplete works, etc., and that's before we even get to her scopious role in Fairport Convention's heyday. Which of course makes for a great ballot poll.

Lee547 (Lee626), Monday, 29 August 2011 10:39 (fourteen years ago)

Yardbirds, anyone? Not around for long, but as with the recently-polled Beach Boys alot of their best stuff is obscurities unknown to casual fans. Also, there have been about 25 different best-of compilations and not one is all-inclusive or well chosen IMO.

Lee547 (Lee626), Monday, 29 August 2011 10:47 (fourteen years ago)

Ke$ha i think

prego, Monday, 29 August 2011 11:44 (fourteen years ago)

i think a yardbirds one would be great

jesus & ramona (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 1 September 2011 06:07 (fourteen years ago)

Sisqo poll would own all polls for life

billstevejim, Thursday, 1 September 2011 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

^^^ OTM Sisqo poll now IMO

billstevejim, Thursday, 1 September 2011 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

that would be kind of funny, when "Thong Song" got all the votes and everything else got bageled

two weeks pass...

Really surprised Jimi Hendrix's name hasn't come up on this or the order/timing thread.

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Monday, 19 September 2011 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

well, if people thought even Zep had almost too small a catalog to poll...

some dude, Monday, 19 September 2011 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

we need Madonna and Roxy Music in that there poll.

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 19 September 2011 22:56 (fourteen years ago)

Pulling together all the posthumously released stuff, Hendrix's catalog gets a lot bigger, but yeah, point taken. Still, it would be interesting to see what the top 10 or 15 looked like.

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Monday, 19 September 2011 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

the Madonna poll is cursed. don't even speak of it.

Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 20 September 2011 01:09 (fourteen years ago)

it really will be kind of momentous and cathartic whenever it finally happens

some dude, Tuesday, 20 September 2011 01:16 (fourteen years ago)

surely there's been a stones poll already

mookieproof, Tuesday, 20 September 2011 01:28 (fourteen years ago)

Not a ballot poll. These things are a fairly recent development on ILM iirc.
