My markers good for the money

James & Bobby Quantify (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 16 June 2011 17:40 (thirteen years ago)

one of my college roommates was a sound engineer for the recording studio we had in the basement of our dorm; he would frequently make copies of the more hilarious/ridiculous things ppl recorded and play them for us later so we could all heartily lol

the most lolsome recordings came from this indie girl who had the "I am a precious butterfly" demeanor (I'm sure you can visualize what this means) and her tone-deaf male friend who sort of bellowed his way through everything, the funniest one being a recording of "Stephanie Says" that happened to be my first encounter with the song ever, so for years I thought they'd written it

hearing the actual recording and realizing that bellowing dude's vocals were comparable (along with the lyrics themselves) basically rendered any chance I had of taking VU seriously DOA

anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

whereas with Metallica, all I really had to do was see a picture of them

i think i speak for markers when i say we like to rock, and metallica rocks just a teensy weensy bit harder than set the twilight reeling

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

i'm not trying to argue that vu aren't influential or whatever, but my desire to hear their music is so low compared to my desire to hear metallica's. there was a time in my life where the only artists i really listened to for their whole albums were metallica and staind. and i played that shit again and again and again. i didn't even know vu back then, but i'm sure even if i had i wouldn't have liked them more

i started to try to write out why i really like metallica more, but i'm not good at explaining that kind of stuff, so

― Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, June 16, 2011 1:46 PM

this is probably part of it, although i like enough music that doesn't rock, like joanna newsom and whatever, that this is probably only a part of it . . . (i also don't know what twilight reeling is tbh)

While stowing away on a boxcar, the couple make love. Later that night, the starman tells Jenny "I gave you a baby tonight." Jenny attempts to explain to him that she is infertile, and cannot conceive a child, but the starman insists, saying, "Believe what I tell you." He explains to the stunned Jenny that the baby will be the son of her dead husband, because he is a clone of Scott. He also explains that he will know all that the starman knows and when he grows up he will become a teacher. He tells her that he will stop the gestation from going further if she wishes, but the joyful Jenny embraces him, in acceptance of this gift.

congratulations, markers and strongo

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

Man, I was just thinking today how I've completely exited my latest Metallica phase and will probably have no desire to hear them at all for the next 10 years or so. I haven't listened to VU in a couple years either. I feel no passion for either of them. Both of these bands have fulfilled very specific needs in the past, but neither of them work for me now. I think from an objective standpoint I'd give VU a slight edge because their ballads don't suck. Also, for calling it quits in a timely manner.

Yeah, judging a band based on a bad cover of an outtake that was unreleased until a couple of decades after it was recorded seems pretty fair.

i don't hate metallica, they're crossover metal kings and I'm a crossover kinda guy, but every velvets album is chock full of songs I still find odd and engaging despite having memorized them by adolescence. Someone could say "oh yeah but the FOO FIGHTERS man don't you wanna throw down to monkey wrench" but i'd still pick VU. i will say there are individual VU songs (sister ray) i'd easily take over any individual metallica track, but i'd still much rather listen to the first 4 'ca albums in a row than the first four vu

Felt obligated to vote for VU, although if I'm honest with myself I'd rather hear "Whiplash" than any given VU song on most days.
