flopson, Sunday, 3 July 2011 01:27 (fourteen years ago)

"super bass" is both the best song and the best summer 2011 jam

like i thought it was a vg song in pink friday context and then this year's warm weather rolled in and it became an UNIMPEACHABLY GREAT song - like the perfect balance between bratty/pretty, aggressive/vulnerable, ruffneck/disneypop, smartass/airhead

lex pretend, Sunday, 3 July 2011 07:29 (fourteen years ago)

super bass = 9/10 (loses a touch of momentum after nicki stops rapping)
the edge of glory = 8/10 (gotta be in the right mood though, unlike "super bass" which can PUT me in the right mood for it)
give me everything = 7/10 (MEMENTO MORI CLUB POP)
i wanna go = 7/10 (not unenjoyable but i cannot get behind this era of britney as a thing to be enthusiastic about in general and would not mind if she just stopped for a while, or even for good)
rolling in the deep = 6/10 (i have grown so sick of this but i did think it was okay when i first heard it, leagues better than anything else adele has put her tedious name to)

the rest are various shades of 0-3/10 gross

lex pretend, Sunday, 3 July 2011 07:33 (fourteen years ago)

oh who am i kidding the amount of times i've put "super bass" obsessively on loop says 10/10 so much more than my ~rational~ assessment ever could

lex pretend, Sunday, 3 July 2011 07:34 (fourteen years ago)

Need to listen to a few more of these before confirming but can't imagine my choice not being "Super Bass".

"Don't Wanna Go Home" has made me laugh pretty hard but I'd only reward a song for awfulness if there was nothing in the list I actually liked.

"Rolling In The Deep" I like most in random club mix derivation, I think.

Tim F, Sunday, 3 July 2011 10:35 (fourteen years ago)

i like gaga occasionally but edge of glory is one of the most irritating songs i've ever heard, just a really shrill horrible melody.

"Super Bass" easily, over "I Wanna Go" and the Ne-Yo part of "Give Me Everything."

saxobeat is pretty dope -- "on the floor" is really great tho

super bass by a mile, though i do also like a number of other songs on this list

teledyldonix, Sunday, 3 July 2011 23:13 (fourteen years ago)

LMFAO (featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock), "Party Rock Anthem"

Kind've suprised there hasn't been more discussion of this on ILx - this was #1 in NZ for nearly three months; just fell short of Crazy Frog's "Axel F" stay at the top in terms of chartbusting power, fending off multiple Gaga singles and the like until finally succumbing to Adele. Has enough hooks/segements that I'd thought snatches of it I'd heard out of cars/walking past shops/etc belonged to different songs; seems to sum up that Ke$ha/Kreayshawn L.A. trashthetic (though I'd initially pegged this as incredibly Australian for some reason, both the shuffling and the uh mersh vibe - Tim F, how was this received over yr way?) while working as a novelty dance song cf "The Macarena".

Voting Pitbull ... secretly hoping him'n'Shakira's "Rabiosa" hits the charts.

etc, Monday, 4 July 2011 04:50 (fourteen years ago)

'segments', not 'segEments', ugh.

Someone needs to record "Party Frock Anthem".

etc, Monday, 4 July 2011 05:25 (fourteen years ago)

afaict lots of raver kids here do that shuffle dance

some dude, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 10:42 (fourteen years ago)

super bass = 9/10 (loses a touch of momentum after nicki stops rapping)

I disagree with this actually, just because its whole mallpop vibe is so lush.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 11:23 (fourteen years ago)

Of these "songs of the summer," the Adele may be the only one I literally encounter everywhere I go, and on every station. Most of these I haven't heard in passing yet, but the summer is young! That LMFAO video is pretty good, as is the Guetta.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 11:32 (fourteen years ago)

Matt DC otm re: "Super Bass" and I usually hate when Nicki choose to sing instead of rap, which explains why I've detested a majority of her singles so far. I mean, given the current pop/rnb/rap crossover market, I totally get why people want her to sing like Rihanna (or whoever), but when she's got such a commanding control over a unique instrument like hers when she raps, I get frustrated when she's so reigned in. I feel like "Super Bass" lets Nicki be Nicki AND gives up a radio-ready pop hook.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 14:00 (fourteen years ago)

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

NOT GONNA HARP on this either again, but "super bass" could only be called lush in the ringtone era, and even that regard it's not really

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

it is, though! i looked at it for like 30 seconds thinking Drake's dance moves looked like Pharrell's and i was like wait is this "Frontin'"?

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:32 (fourteen years ago)

remy bean, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:35 (fourteen years ago)

for me it started with ET, and then the first time i saw "last friday night" the deal was sealed

oh ok i kind of misphrased my qn, i meant what happened to the things you used to think were annoying about her - like i don't think she's changed at all really, what is it that makes her palatable now?

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

well - i loved "i kissed a girl" from the beginning. for me it's about the music, the image doesn't play such a huge factor. and bc i liked ET so much, i guess i was willing to be more open to her in general - and somehow, looking back, california gurls and teenage dream finally clicked for me, whereas they hadn't before. like i've had a few moments when i remember jordan talking about those songs, and now i get it. i dunno, i guess it was just a timing thing.

j lol (surm), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

altho the TGIF imagery def plays a huge factor.

j lol (surm), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

imo noone in their right mind has a rooting interest in katy perry but you have to pretty stubborn to hate all her singles if you have any kind of fondness for state of the art dr. luke chart bullshit -- for me about half her hits work and half don't

hoovers like jagger (some dude), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:43 (fourteen years ago)

I feel more like 3/4ths of her singles don't work. I hated all of the singles on the first album except for wishing Pink did "Waking Up in Vegas" instead, begrudgingly came to like "California Gurls" after repeated exposure, loved "Teenage Dream", hated "Firework", hated "E.T." more than anything else", and now really love "Last Friday Night".

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:46 (fourteen years ago)

remy bean, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:48 (fourteen years ago)

yeah generally imagining how much better her shit would be w/ Pink or someone else more capable singing it is part and parcel of this cruel bargain of accepting KP

hoovers like jagger (some dude), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:49 (fourteen years ago)

i would not want Pink to sing Katy Perry's songs, i don't really like Pink.

j lol (surm), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:50 (fourteen years ago)

okay that's kind of crazy, Pink is leagues better than Katy

DJP, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

that's our surm though

hoovers like jagger (some dude), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

i generally like Katy Perry's voice - her combination of strong alto and atmospheric falsetto works for me.

i think a lot of people that i know IRL would not say they prefer Pink over KP -- i don't think it's such an obvious choice.

j lol (surm), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

in your world of deaf people

hoovers like jagger (some dude), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

:) yea it's just me and my inner circle of deaf people who appreciate katy perry's voice

j lol (surm), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:57 (fourteen years ago)

i kind of feel KP's songs always pussy out of being quite as good or striking as they could be - "last friday night" is so lazily written, it's a list of dated clichés with a sprinkling of (lol also dated) "epic fail" phrases to make it more au courant - it sounds like dr luke wrote it 5 years ago and only just dug it out of some drawer.

and KP does not have the presence to make it transcend its clichés (usually this is where pop becomes great) because she tries to have her cake and eat it so much w/r/t her persona that it ends up way too nebulous to seize on to - like i hate ke$ha but she at least goes hard at what she does, you know exactly what she's about at all times. and in terms of performance KP's blaring, grating yawp is such that it actively drags down her better tunes, rather than selling them.

still think her best song by far is "california gurls" - "last friday night" is just forgettable and the video is gross. "et" is slightly better but the KP-does-björk styling of the video is tremendously embarrassing.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

"atmospheric falsetto" really??? KP's voice makes me flinch.

i'm not a fan of pink either but at least she was good a decade ago ;_;

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:00 (fourteen years ago)

i get that it doesn't work for you, but last friday night is supposed to be dated and lazy. it's an 80s hangover song.

j lol (surm), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

and tbh any "Kesha does it better" argument is an automatic epic fail in my book.

j lol (surm), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:05 (fourteen years ago)

u know how much i hate ke$ha!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:06 (fourteen years ago)

god i hope so

j lol (surm), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:08 (fourteen years ago)

lol

I like a lot of Ke$ha's stuff too

DJP, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:09 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I don't have much rooting interest in KP... sometimes I think she comes off as fun, other times annoying and try hard. Cali gurls and then teenage dream were the points I first really liked anything by her (I dug waking up in vegas but I could write it off as one good single out of four). Mostly I agree/disagree with her as the singles come and go. Hated hated et, love tgif. The way it goes etc

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:10 (fourteen years ago)

i accept Ke$ha and Katy as equally terrible with the caveat that KP does the kind of material i find far more tolerable

hoovers like jagger (some dude), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:11 (fourteen years ago)

Btw I heard party rock anthem today and... it's pretty great? I don't even hate the lame lunch on a rick ross single. Actually really dig the crookers/frankenhouse vibe too it and im usually not into it at all

I guess it makes sense that lmfao would strike gold and come up with a unique & identifiable eurohouse single amongst a slop of eurohouse singles

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:14 (fourteen years ago)

Lol lame lunch

Lame pun...

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

haha I thought that was slang analogous to "bite"

DJP, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

used to be when Berry Gordy's offspring wanted a little pop notoriety they'd call in a favor from Michael Jackson for a hook, now we just get a douchey Mad TV version of the Black Eyed Peas

Unusually spot on poll results.

Tim F, Wednesday, 6 July 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

man that adele song, like at a certain point you can't really front, that is a pop hit for sure. i hear it all the time and i pretty much can't criticize it, catchy as hell

the beta banned (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 23:32 (fourteen years ago)

the correct winner!

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 July 2011 07:19 (fourteen years ago)

and the four 0-votes are the four irredeemably awful songs on the list. haven't heard "lighters" yet tho.

Peepee Soaked Heckhole (zachlyon), Thursday, 7 July 2011 07:49 (fourteen years ago)

I really can't tolerate the way Adele sings at all.

these goons were made for waka (The Reverend), Thursday, 7 July 2011 09:33 (fourteen years ago)

"Rolling In The Deep" is pretty great and still huge in the summer but kinda silly to be on this list in the first place, it's been out since like November

people fronting on "Give Me Everything" itt

some dude, Thursday, 7 July 2011 10:41 (fourteen years ago)

i really love "give me everything"

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 July 2011 14:14 (fourteen years ago)

hear that song 5 times a day and i'm still not really sick of it!

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 7 July 2011 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

the secret best part of that song is pitbull's post-chorus chorus (?)

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 7 July 2011 14:21 (fourteen years ago)

WE MIGHT! NOT! GET! TOMORROW!

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 July 2011 14:23 (fourteen years ago)

btw i might possibly be in miami next week to talk to pitbull

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 July 2011 14:23 (fourteen years ago)

the secret best part of that song is pitbull's post-chorus chorus (?)

― gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Thursday, July 7, 2011 10:21 AM (44 minutes ago) Bookmark

there are basically four parts to the chorus that total 24 bars -- and Pit's verses are only like 12 bars! the song is practically all chorus

some dude, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

i still have no idea who nyer is or what her role in the song is

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:08 (fourteen years ago)

she's the female voice who sings on 1/4th of the chorus -- afaict she's just some random hot video chick that pitbull gave a part on the song

i still don't understand why all these dance producers like afrojack, guetta, benny benassi etc. get a 'featuring' credit just for doing the beat -- y'all might do that in europe but here in america timbaland has to get in front of the mic and mumble a couple times to get billing on the track

some dude, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:24 (fourteen years ago)

it's a post-khaled world

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:26 (fourteen years ago)

just another symptom of America's descent into socialism IMO

DJP, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

the funny thing about "give everything to me" is that pitbull shout out ne-yo & nyer on the intro, so clearly afrojack labeled for a credit afterward?

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

pitbull also says "kodak" twice in one sentence on the intro, so i don't think it was very carefully considered

some dude, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:34 (fourteen years ago)

lol that is true

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

i wonder if kodak is experiencing a cristal-esque sales bump, i should've bought some stock

gucci mande (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

one year passes...

God, "Where Them Girls At" may have, by a long shot, the worst Nicki verse ever.

Peebee!
Peebee!
Who is Peabo Bryson?
Two years ago I renewed my license.
Anyway why'd I start my verse like that?
You could suck a dick or you could suck on a ballsack
No, no,
I don't endorse that.
Pause that,
abort tha.
Just the other day mi go London, saw dat, kids ina the street
Paparazzi, all dat

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 22 December 2012 23:10 (twelve years ago)

not to mention the lazy, obnoxious "DAY DA DAY DAY DAY DAY" babbling. Barf. Sorry, I guess I could have put this on one of the Nicki threads. This poll actually has a decent number of enduring summer jams, mixed in with stuff I heard way too many times at my last restaurant job and would pay money to never hear again e.g. "Lighters," "Rolling In The Deep," "Super Bass," and "TGIF."

Still dig "Party Rock Anthem" though.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 22 December 2012 23:13 (twelve years ago)

haha you didn't even mention that the verse ends with BECKY BECKY BECKY

fanute me or shoot me (some dude), Sunday, 23 December 2012 00:39 (twelve years ago)

anyway, KP & pitbull are pretty much the only two of these that i'll bump in the car -- maybe "i'm on one" begrudgingly

idk
