Following the success of the Blur, Pavement, MC Tunes and Manics
and Petshop Boys
So again identical set-up to the last two and I'm also copying the header rules verbatim (cheers):
Right, here we break in for an importatn message:
Some helpful words, hopefully. It's a large and wide ranging set of tracks, most of them well known to your granny from back in her bongo playing days. Some (if not all) of you will be tired to the point of overfamiliarity with a large number of their 'nailed into fundamental history' tracks, so this is about nominating your favourite songs at this moment in time. You want to be obscure? Go do it. You want to praise the canon? Be my guest.
There are very few remixes in here. (don't larf, read on...) The only ones I can think of regard two songs: Love Me Do (exists in two different recordings), and Revolution (three, sort of..). With LMD, safe to say, it's a vote for either version. Revolution exists in "single b-side" (noisy), Album track "Revolution 1" and 'collage' Revolution 9. For this one, even though 9 has been proved to be the 'second part' of a long recording of 1, we shall deal with it as a separate track.
In summary: Votes are for the 'song', and specific versions will be given an addendum where necessary, sort of like this:60. I MUST BE IN LOVE (1965) [115 points, 6 votes, 1 Number1, Specific versions:2="Archaeology"
.. but it is not necessary to do this for voting.
Right, trackography:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Beatles_songs has the 'recognised' oneshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:List_of_The_Beatles_songs#To_Be_Added has 'christmas flexi' songs, and other tracks of 'dubious/debateable' provenance.
But, main rule: It has to have been recorded and released by The Beatles. e.g. "Carnival of Light" not eligible"From a Window" not eligible, but "Bad to me" is"Step inside love" is, as it is on "Anthology"OK, nearing overkill now. You get the idea, I'm sure.
Choose your top twenty tracks and they'll score as follows:1:40, 2:36, 3:33, 4:30, 5:28, 6:26, 7:25, 8:24, 9:23, 10:22, 11:21, 12:20, 13:19, 14:18, 15:17, 16:16, 17:15, 18:14, 19:13, 20:12.
Please send your ballot to: beatlespoll (at) hotmail.co.uk by midnight gmt July 11th (that's a week from Sunday).
In the meantime, use this thread for bigging up tracks you want people to vote for and asking any questions..
And remember: All you need is Aaaaaaarrgggghhhhh!!!

Actually, if you factor in the "Anthology" there are a great many 'different' versions.
And ooh, ooh, I have got an actual remix!
"Yellow Submarine", on the CD single of "Real Love", is an actual remix, adding in an excised intro and making the sound effects noisier.

yeah me too - as idiosyncratic as it comes. Lots of goofy White Album cuts etc.
What I did find is that actually picking 20 Beatles tracks that I love above the others was kind of tough. I do really like the Beatles, but I've been listening to them for 20 years and so their catalogue now shifts between "like", "don't mind" and "not so keen" rather than "LOVE", "LIKE", "HATE".

― Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 00:34 (thirteen years ago)
What was the reasoning behind 22 spaces anyway? Seemed like such an arbitrary number.
― Josef K-Doe (WmC), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 00:36 (thirteen years ago)
I think it was an arbitrary number.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 00:38 (thirteen years ago)

― sleeve, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 00:45 (thirteen years ago)

― Mark G, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 00:50 (thirteen years ago)
I sort of kidded about "Plenty of Jam Jars" upthread, but when I heard "Please don't bring your banjo back" the first time, I was sure I'd heard it before as a genuine 'old' song. (I got it for 50p at a jumble sale)
More recently, it did strike me as John (as the Count) telling Paul to "play a little melody from the Good old days" without any warning whatsoever, and Paul having to come up with something completely off the cuff. "Oh my goodness! Yes. umm..." and he stalls a bit for time, then comes up with the goods...
Should have vote for it really.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 00:54 (thirteen years ago)
threw together my ballot very instinctively without regard to how it represented their catalog and then looked at how it shook down:
4 from singles/Past Masters4 from White Album2 each from Sgt Pepper's, Let It Be and Help1 each from Revolver, Please Please Me, A Hard Day's Night, Abbey Road, With The Beatles and Magical Mystery Tour0 from Rubber Soul, Beatles For Sale, etc.
also very evenly divided between Lennon and McCartney (though I've always considered myself partial to Paul's songs) with 1 Harrison tune.
― some dude, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 01:01 (thirteen years ago)
1 from With the Beatles1 from Hard Day's Night1 from Beatles for Sale1 from Help!4 from Rubber Soul4 from Revolver1 from Sgt. Pepper2 from Magical Mystery Tour1 from The White Album0 from Let it Be2 from Abbey Road2 from Past Masters
― Darin, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 03:18 (thirteen years ago)

― Mordy, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 05:21 (thirteen years ago)
my #2 track vote charted almost entirely on the fact that i've lullaby-sung it to my daughter about three thousand times in the last month -- probably would've only scraped the top twenty a year ago.
― Mordy, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 05:26 (thirteen years ago)
As the inventor of the 22 spaces, I can confirm it was an arbitrary number (though, to be fair, twenty is just as arbitrary - there's no particular reason why the number of your favourite tunes should be divisible by the total of your fingers and thumbs). I just started making up a scoring system working down from 40 with decreasing gaps and decided I'd keep going till I got down to ten points, which happened to be after 22 tracks.

20's the perfect number for me. Neil Young might be the only guy where I'd feel a little hemmed in by 20. Even with the Beatles, once I got past 15, there was a slight change in how much the songs meant to me.

Sent mine off. Hard to pick just 20, even harder to order them, such as it is, although the top 2 were fairly easy. I ended up with:
1 - With The Beatles2 - A Hard Day's Night2 - Beatles For Sale2 - Help!1 - Rubber Soul2 - Revolver2 - Sgt. Pepper2 - The Beatles1 - Yellow Submarine1 - Let It Be4 - non-album tracks
12 Johns, 7 Pauls and 1 George.

I'd've given it a vote if the verses were better.
20 ballots is fantastic!
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 14:14 (thirteen years ago)
I used to have an early version without any of the big man/wigwam crap, and a slow verse instead, something like: sitting here/drinking coffee/in my room/and I'm feeling blue/and there's nothing you can say/you can talk to me - but I lost it and have never heard it since. They hadn't worked out harmonies yet and it was frankly a bit of a mess, but spine-tingling nonetheless. I'd've voted for that.
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 14:21 (thirteen years ago)
I had 8-1/2 for John, 5-1/2 for Paul, 4 for George, 1 for Ringo, and 1 I-don't-know. (Wikipedia credits one of mine as a 60/40 for Paul.) I think, anyway--I only double-checked a couple.
― clemenza, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

7 - Past Masters/non-album tracks3 - The Beatles2 - Help!2 - Rubber Soul2 - Revolver2 - Let It Be1 - Magical Mystery Tour1 - Abbey Road
"non-album" tracks using the UK versions, that is (some of them actually ended up on the US versions of the early albums). Anyway, you can tell I've had both volumes of Past Masters the longest, right? It was my Beatles intro, given to me for my 13th birthday by an aunt.
― Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 14:29 (thirteen years ago)

― Volvo Twilight (p-dog), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 15:10 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know. If you held a gun to a stranger's head on the streets and asked them to hum a few bars of No Reply or I'm Only Sleeping you'd probably get a blank stare. And then go to jail I suppose.

I've got a few friends who are big enough Beatles fans to make a top 20, but don't read ILM. If I got them to make a top 20 and emailed it in, could it be counted? Totally understand if not, just thought the more polls the better.
― nate woolls, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, it's kinda meant as "our" poll/ballot....
― Mark G, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 15:46 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah I understand that, now that I've thought about it the reasons for not doing it probably outweigh the reasons for doing it.
― nate woolls, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 15:48 (thirteen years ago)
if they were lurkers, we wouldn't penalize them or prohibit them from participating; I don't see why it would be that big of a deal tbh
― DJP, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 15:48 (thirteen years ago)
Right, this is the thing:
It's not a "beatles fan" ballot, it's an ILXor one.
As mentioned above, The Beatles songs are all, pretty much, canonical. This poll is for people who may not neccessarily be Beatles fans, but know enough to be able to select their favourites. The result will have a flavor. An ILX flavor.
So, thanks but no.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 15:49 (thirteen years ago)
Having said that, I'm not going to disqualify any ballots I get.

I just realized I got to 20 without anything from Abbey Road. Wish I could've fit "You Never Give Me Your Money" or "Oh! Darling" in there.

― a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 5 July 2011 22:39 (thirteen years ago)
I'd make the case for a few alternate takes and remixes:
__"I'm Looking Through You" from Anthology 2 made me love the song--I like how without the bridge it could be about friendship or something other than love, sorta punk, but then I'm someone who thinks the turnaround cheapens "Yesterday."__Both "Across the Universe" and "Two of Us" from Let It Be... Naked are 2003 "remixes" that strip away all the orchestral stuff that kept me from getting into Let It Be.
― Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 5 July 2011 23:22 (thirteen years ago)
? what "orchestral stuff" is there on the original version of Two of Us

"Anna" was close for me, but I did vote for two other covers ("Mr. Moonlight" and "The Honeymoon Song").
Anyone else voting for "Ask Me Why?"
― timellison, Wednesday, 6 July 2011 01:13 (thirteen years ago)
No, but I did vote for "Tell Me Why!" My cover was "Slow Down."
― Michael Bay, CEO of Transformers (Phil D.), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 01:15 (thirteen years ago)
Encouraging votes against the canon (whatever that's supposed to mean since pretty much every album is canonical) will likely make no difference.. The top 10 should still include the usual suspects.

Probably most of them, but I know I've used YouTubes of "Rain" (great), "Norwegian Wood" (ditto), and "I've Just Seen a Face" in class. Grooveshark, on the other hand, not a single original.

what i meant about diverging from the canon was more that our top 10 will probably look a bit different from the top 10 of the Beatles list Rolling Stone published a couple years ago, i.e. i'm betting we won't rate "Hey Jude" as highly

If I had to pick five Beatles songs that are the most mummified at this point--overplayed, over-covered, most liable to turn up as muzak while at the mall, etc.--they'd be "Hey Jude," "Let It Be," "Yesterday," "The Long and Winding Road," and "Michelle." (With "Something" maybe the sixth.) Not sure if any of them will make the final list--maybe "Yesterday." None made my own list, but I like some a lot more than others. My first concrete radio memory is a Top 300 that Toronto's CHUM counted down in 1970; I was 9. I remember that "Let It Be" was #1, and "Hey Jude" was also high in the Top 10. Those two still have some hard-to-explain effect on me, and maybe it traces back to that countdown. "Yesterday" I loved when I first started to really listen to the Beatles more towards the middle of the decade; that's long gone, but I can still objectively recognize it as a brilliant song. With "The Long and Winding Road" and "Michelle," I don't know that I remember ever liking them that much.
― clemenza, Thursday, 7 July 2011 21:46 (thirteen years ago)
Hey Jude will make it. Let It Be might. Agree about Michelle - supposedly it is/was the most-played US radio song ever, which is amazing to me; it's well-formed enough, but meaningless and kind of lame.
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 7 July 2011 21:54 (thirteen years ago)
have never really met anyone who outright LOVES that song, pretty much every Beatles nut I know hates it
― a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 7 July 2011 21:58 (thirteen years ago)
i don't much care for any of those songs except 'hey jude,' which still works for me every time -- even if you're bored by the coda, hard to argue with those perfect first three minutes.
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 7 July 2011 22:00 (thirteen years ago)
"Hey Jude" is fun to hear in public spots only so you can point out John's "Fucking 'ell!"

― a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 7 July 2011 22:04 (thirteen years ago)
I've never noticed that!
I just found the countdown online: http://craig.sowny.ca/www/www3.sympatico.ca/craig.smith/alltime2.htm. I had "Let It Be" and "Hey Jude" backwards, though I did get the numbers right. (Off-topic, I know, but my favourite of-the-moment pick: Bobby Sherman's "Little Woman" at #19.)
― clemenza, Thursday, 7 July 2011 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

See, I think this must vary greatly from one country to another. I was about 20 or 21 before I even heard 'Something' and 'The Long and Winding Road' - I really don't think they are/were a big deal in Britain. Even 'Hey Jude' (which I would concede is far more well-known) I didn't really know.
― There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 7 July 2011 22:05 (thirteen years ago)
jk = just kidding, guys!--A Hard Day's Night has great songs, just none in my Top 20.
For me, "Yesterday" is chilling until the turnaround, or whatever you call it, when he sings the "why she had to go" part, which is either one too many rhymes or just too pat--maybe she left because she doesn't love you, not because you "said something wrong." I don't get "Hey Jude" hate at all: It's like one of the greatest advice songs ever.
― Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 7 July 2011 22:05 (thirteen years ago)
I honestly have no idea what will be in the top ten. I mean I can think of plenty of songs that definitely won't be there (unless there's an unfathomably large contingent of lurkers who love Octopus's Garden), but there are so many contenders and no particular received wisdom on what the biggest/best tunes are.
― There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 7 July 2011 22:07 (thirteen years ago)

― There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 7 July 2011 22:37 (thirteen years ago)
Have to agree about geographical variability. "Michelle" and "TL&WR" wouldn't even be close to the top few dozen most over-familiar songs in these parts. They still sound pretty fresh tbh. "I Wanna Hold Your Hold" on the other hand...
― Nag! Nag! Nag!, Thursday, 7 July 2011 22:44 (thirteen years ago)
She Loves You still sounds fresh to me. IWTHYH doesn't, I agree Nag!
― Iago Galdston, Thursday, 7 July 2011 22:45 (thirteen years ago)
the early hits never lose their sparkle. it's the later singles that are too easily translated into slush
― Dr X O'Skeleton, Thursday, 7 July 2011 23:44 (thirteen years ago)
I first heard these songs all chronologically jumbled--some radio station played them all alphabetically by title for a weekend and I taped most of it and played those tapes a thousand times (probably not an exaggeration) so even after reading bios and watching docs, it's hard for me to give 1968 stuff a leg up over 1964 stuff or whatever. It's all just the Beatles, man.
― President Keyes, Friday, 8 July 2011 00:23 (thirteen years ago)
In my world (suburban UK) the most well-known Beatles songs are When I'm 64, Yesterday, Yellow Submarine, Obla-Di-Obla-Dah, Octopus's Garden and Penny Lane. Mostly because we probably had to sing them at school.
― Post-Manpat Music (dog latin), Friday, 8 July 2011 09:48 (thirteen years ago)
If I had to name the five most cloying songs in my world (also suburban uk, with emphasis on whatever bits of telly and/or normal people manage to seep through the ILM bias), I'd go with: Can't Buy Me Love, In My Life, With A Little Help From My Friends (totally unfairly imo), Hello Goodbye and Here Comes The Sun
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 8 July 2011 10:26 (thirteen years ago)
Like all those, except WALHFMF which I always think of as a bit of a drag at times. Hello Goodbye is a little bit annoying. I don't think I'd call any of those cloying though.
― Post-Manpat Music (dog latin), Friday, 8 July 2011 11:43 (thirteen years ago)
I really like Hello Goodbye apart from the ending.
― There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 8 July 2011 11:47 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, that ruins it.
― Post-Manpat Music (dog latin), Friday, 8 July 2011 11:48 (thirteen years ago)
There's something horribly glib and irritating about WALHFMF, ugh, tho it has good aspects, there are MUCH more cloying songs in the Beatles' repertoire than the ones listed above!
― R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 8 July 2011 11:51 (thirteen years ago)
I think my issues with WALHFMF must actually stem from hammed-up cover versions by the likes of Joe Cocker and whatnot. Wasn't there a TV show in the '80s that used a version of the song as outro credits? It all seems a bit earnest and adult for the psychedelic Beatles.
― Post-Manpat Music (dog latin), Friday, 8 July 2011 11:56 (thirteen years ago)
As mentioned on another Beatles thread from a while back, the best line is "What do you see when you turn out the light/I can't tell you but I know it's mine".
― Post-Manpat Music (dog latin), Friday, 8 July 2011 11:57 (thirteen years ago)
The original is a plodder and Ringo's vocals are dull and it's an early instance of Paul's boring regular guy persona
― R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 8 July 2011 12:01 (thirteen years ago)
I think I hate WALHFMF, but I don't - I just hated Wet Wet Wet doing it in the late 80s. Cloying for me: Here, There & Everywhere; I Will; Fool On The Hill
― There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 8 July 2011 12:03 (thirteen years ago)
It was the theme to the Wonder Years, Dog Latin.

Aw, man, not "I Will"! That song's legitimately sweet.
― walloginabox (kkvgz), Friday, 8 July 2011 12:18 (thirteen years ago)
I like Cocker's Woodstock version of WALHFMF, better than the original most days, and think Here/There/Everywhere is one of the best things Paul ever wrote (no hongro).
― Josef K-Doe (WmC), Friday, 8 July 2011 12:19 (thirteen years ago)
Gotta agree on Here There and Everywhere, despite the saccharine lyrics, the music is probably Paul's greatest pure tune-age

Even the more cloying Paul tracks on the White Album benefit from the other Beatles' presence. Doesn't seem to matter whether they're actually on the songs or not. Oddly, on most of John's songs the reverse seems to be true - by 1968 his attentions were elsewhere and either the heroin had sapped his energy or the tension in the studio was getting to him.
Still, I didn't include a single song on this supposed masterpiece in my top 20. There are at least a dozen terrific songs, to be sure, but the aura of the record is toxic - and not in a compelling way a la There's a Riot Goin' On or, say, In Utero. Instead, the Beatles sound like rich rock stars for the first time in their career - cut off both materially and spiritually from their public, convinced for once that their shit doesn't stink. Solipsism may have suited John's early solo work, but it's not a good look for the Beatles.
Sorry for the White Album tangent, but I'm still trying to make sense of both why it leaves me cold and why other people love it so much. Aside from "Revolution" and the air of dread that hangs over the proceedings, what the fuck did this album have to do with the rest of the world in 1968? Is it just an exceptionally well-timed totem, something for regular people to project their feelings onto because it's the goddamn Beatles and everybody loves them? Not that the Beatles have to signify explicitly for their public and their social/historical context, but I feel like on this record, more than any other, the Beatles are signifying for themselves and their narrowing world alone. Don't know if that makes sense, just a fancy way of saying "White Album = Classic? I don't get it." Probably fodder for a new (or another existing) thread.
My list broke down as follows:
Please Please Me 2A Hard Day's Night 5Rubber Soul 2Revolver 2Sgt. Pepper 2Magical Mystery Tour 1Abbey Road 1Let It Be 3Nonalbum singles 2
The numbers don't necessarily reflect the order of my favorite Beatles albums, which is neat; Rubber Soul is still probably my favorite LP, although A Hard Day's Night is a close second. I really loathe the extent to which late-period Beatles is overrated (which is as good an indicator of mass rockism as any), particularly in relation to the early stuff. Happily, this impulse seems to have tapered somewhat over the past ten years. That said, mid-period Beatles is still probably my favorite era, extending for me all the way from A Hard Day's Night to Magical Mystery Tour. Revolver is great, but Rubber Soul is the songwriting triumph. And though some consider "Michelle" arch, precious or both, the melody is so gorgeous that I put it in my top 5 without a second thought.
― thewufs, Friday, 8 July 2011 16:51 (thirteen years ago)
the obvious answer for why people love the White Album is for its variety - it's freewheeling breadth and ambition. also contains their hardest rocking moments since the early years.
― a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 8 July 2011 16:54 (thirteen years ago)
I sort of get the "variety" angle, but I don't think there's much life to the genre experiments on the White Album. Professional and dull, like most of the art rock that followed in its wake. (See the stylistic detours on Sgt. Pepper's for comparison.) The children's songs are ick. "Yer Blues" and "Why Don't We Do It In the Road?" have no reason to exist. "Good Night" works because it's shameless and heartfelt all at once. And "Helter Skelter" is pretty impressive. It's still about a four-star/8 out of 10 record for me. But it's about the tenth best Beatles album.
― thewufs, Friday, 8 July 2011 17:09 (thirteen years ago)
thewufs otm re. Michelle, it made my top 20 easily, might even be in my top 10, can't remember right now.
― nate woolls, Friday, 8 July 2011 17:12 (thirteen years ago)
Yer Blues and Why Don't We Do It in the Road reason to exist is to signify the Beatles being "grown ups" - they have sex, they feel profound self-loathing and depression, they are dirty, messy, raw, tangled-up human beings. sometimes people like these things to be reflected in their popular art, it can facilitate a profound emotional connection with the material ("they are just like ME" etc)
Michelle is fucking awful
― a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 8 July 2011 17:15 (thirteen years ago)
I dunno how anyone could classify Revolution No. 9 as "professional" ("dull" = eh, okay ymmv) - there was no one of their statue releasing this kind of thing on a pop record. sure compositionally and structurally it's all Stockhausen but he wasn't exactly top 40 now was he
― a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 8 July 2011 17:17 (thirteen years ago)
Ok, there are a few exceptions to the professionalism thing. I still think there are an awful lot of throwaways on the White Album that only get attention because-it's-the-Beatles. Whatever John was trying to do on "Yer Blues" he does better on "Plastic Ono Band" anyway.
― thewufs, Friday, 8 July 2011 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

lots of good discussion about the White Album here including many who correctly note that the album is one of those things that functions as more than the sum of its parts
― a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 8 July 2011 17:47 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I know. I sort of shifted to "in hindsight..." here.
― thewufs, Friday, 8 July 2011 17:49 (thirteen years ago)
See for me the White Album is considerably less than the sum of its parts. That's why I just can't get a handle on a lot of the love for it. To put it more simply: the "it's like four simultaneous solo albums" line strikes me as pretty much dead-on. It's not Beatle-y enough. There are the tangible reasons I listed above, but there's also something harder to define at work for me when I hear the record: it's got no spark.
― thewufs, Friday, 8 July 2011 18:02 (thirteen years ago)
Thewufs, sounds like you aren't persuadable which is totally fine, but if you are interested there is a book about the Beatles called "Magic Circles" that is mostly about the White Album and the Beatles in 1968...an excellent read

Shakey, is Rev. 9 really Stockhausen, or are you just using him to stand in for "avant-garde music" in general...if so, I didn't know he did sound collages, which I would love to hear. I don't really know what composers did these tape piece-type things, it seems to have more in common with collage film a la Bruce Conner, which he certainly knew through Yoko Ono
― Iago Galdston, Friday, 8 July 2011 19:17 (thirteen years ago)
or maybe Fluxus, of which Yoko was an original member
― Iago Galdston, Friday, 8 July 2011 19:19 (thirteen years ago)
I am referring specifically to Stockhausen's "Hymnen" which is streamed at the link below and is a pretty clear precedent for "Revolution No. 9". Lennon (and McCartney!) specifically namedropped Stockhausen regarding this period.

OK thanks, I look forward to listening. I was aware of their namechecking Stockhausen. As far as the Pepper cover goes, at least some of the people they chose were selected by Paul's art dealer friend who did the set dressing with Peter Blake(?). Obviously Stockhausen was a Beatle pick. Thanks for the link...
― Iago Galdston, Friday, 8 July 2011 19:32 (thirteen years ago)
what the fuck did this album have to do with the rest of the world in 1968?
Drugs, for one!
It sort of seems to me that the tumultuous, chaotic, fracturing White Album was the perfect match for a year where MLK and RFK were shot and all kind of psychedelic shit hit the fan.
As for the Beatles being naval-gazing, John's been so ever since "I'm a Loser" and probably before. Keep in mind almost all the Beatles did enough solo recordings this year (Harrison's "Wonderwall" sountrack, Lennon/Ono's experimental first minimalist/fluxus LPs) that with the Beatles album and singles and the Yellow Submarine soundtrack included, 1968 saw John, Paul, George, and Ringo churning out over 6 LPs worth of new or recently recorded material.
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 8 July 2011 19:35 (thirteen years ago)

― The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 8 July 2011 19:38 (thirteen years ago)
OK Shakey, I just listened to a couple of minutes, can definitely hear the link, but the borrowed bits of speaking and radio still seem subsumed under all the blips and frequency stuff that reminds me of Gesang der Junglinge (admittedly the only real Stockhausen I know!). Still feeling like Stockhausen doing collage per se, which Rev 9 is overwhelmingly, to my ears. But yes, Hymen is obviously a/the chief structural precedent.
― Iago Galdston, Friday, 8 July 2011 19:41 (thirteen years ago)
We should probably be on a different thread for this, but can't we say that ALLEGORY is a nice way of saying how it relates to the outside world?
― Iago Galdston, Friday, 8 July 2011 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

― Euler, Friday, 8 July 2011 19:46 (thirteen years ago)
Hymnen was composed using the following equipment:
For the production of the electronic sounds, I used equipment available at the Studio for Electronic Music of the WDR:
Generators: sine-wave, rectangular, saw-tooth, noise generators;
filters: octave, third, radio drama (W49) filters;
tape recorders: numerous mono, 2-track and two 4-track tape recorders, among them a 2-track and a 4-track tape recorder having continuously variable tape speeds through motors controlled by special generators, a Springer tape recorder with rotating 6-fold play-back head (I used this machine constantly for gradual speeding up and slowing down without pitch change);
a rotation table, which I had had built and used 1958–60 for the realisation of KONTAKTE (see description and photographs in the booklet of CD 3). All spatial chords and spatial melodies of HYMNEN up to circa 4 rotations per second were made using this manually turned rotation table [...]."
most of the material involved is recordings of national anthems, in addition to the spoken bits and the various electronic noises
― a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 8 July 2011 20:03 (thirteen years ago)
it's also what, an hour long?

― There is power in an onion (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 8 July 2011 20:10 (thirteen years ago)
sorry, I'm boring even myself, last post--i did understand that Hymen is made by tape manipulation, my mistake. The tape bits in Rev 9 are much more individually legible as coming from a wider variety of sources is all I meant...hence my droning on about "collage" FIN!
― Iago Galdston, Friday, 8 July 2011 20:27 (thirteen years ago)
well Hymnen is definitely a more focused and considered work. Stockhausen had a specific theme he wanted to explore, and he sticks to it. the source material of Revolution No. 9 is all over the place, I would imagine because a) John was really high and b) they were newbies at this sort of thing and were more enamored of the process rather than the end result (end result is still awesome imho)
― a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 8 July 2011 20:40 (thirteen years ago)
Right on all counts, but I think the fact that it's called Revolution tips off the listener to the end of the world vibe (not to get all Charlie on this!). They were playing with fire on this and Piggies, that's for sure, given they knew exactly how nuts some of their fans were

Wow, impressive responses here. I wasn't expecting to be persuaded to love the record - just wanted to get halfway inside the heads of people who love the White Album to figure out why it works for them. Taste is a motherfucker to try and parse. But that's what we're here for.
― thewufs, Friday, 8 July 2011 21:28 (thirteen years ago)
OTM. And of course produced in the same studios where they made the Goon Show!
Oh, it is definitely the album that is detached from the world outside
Can't imagine any post-AHDN-era Beatles had anything close to resembling normal contact with the world outside. At least during The White Album they didn't spend the entire year shuffling from one hotel room to the next, unable to go anywhere for fear of being crushed by hundreds of screaming hysterical fans.
Odd that their most schizophrenic record was written in India on a TM meditation retreat. Sort of explains "Inland Empire" a bit.
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 8 July 2011 21:29 (thirteen years ago)
Oh yeah, and one of my favorite John songs is "I'm Only Sleeping," which is totally "navel-gazing" solipsistic.
― thewufs, Friday, 8 July 2011 21:30 (thirteen years ago)
The thing about the White Album is that that detachment rings so loud. Which is probably one of the things that makes it compelling for a lot of people.

I don't even love the White Album that much tbh (it is, however, my wife's favorite Beatle record). for me it's between Rubber Soul and Abbey Road.
― a man is only a guy (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 8 July 2011 21:49 (thirteen years ago)
AHDN, onwards, was when they had plenty of views of the outside world, albeit skewed. And, their downtime was all about reaclimatising and either gadding about town a'la Paul, or blobbing out on the sofa with the wife and kid a'la John.
By the time of "White", they existed within their own minds again.

From the new issue of The Onion...not funny, but timely!
LONDON—Just days after the discovery of several previously unreleased Beatles recordings in the attic of Abbey Road Studios, fans and critics across the globe have renounced their enthusiasm for the rock and roll band that was once revered by millions. "This unfortunate find has forced music historians to completely reassess the talents of John, Paul, George, and Ringo," said Beatles scholar Mark Lewisohn, who has dated the tapes to early 1968. "These songs are awful. That one sax solo alone has utterly negated the genius of Magical Mystery Tour and Rubber Soul combined. Certainly this missing link goes a long way toward explaining their solo careers." In reaction to the discovery, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys has shown dramatic signs of improved mental health.
― Iago Galdston, Friday, 8 July 2011 22:10 (thirteen years ago)
Ha...
I was reading the "irregular head" Syd biog, and there is occasional mention of a song called "Living alone" as if we all know it already...
No, it's an unreleased Syd song. So, why no clamour for its release?
The only lyric I found for it is "living alone, I get stoned"
Yep, it sounds awful, lazy and pointless. That's why, then.
― Mark G, Friday, 8 July 2011 22:21 (thirteen years ago)
i like the white album for tons of reasons but i can definitely see why someone wouldn't -- it's definitely the least 'beatley' of all their albums, goes on forever, includes a couple of sing-a-long numbers that can get old fast ('bungalow bill,' 'ob la di,' insert your pick here).
for me it's the sense of creepy solipsism and half-cracked whimsy that hangs over it, like a sinister victorian children's book, that makes it so compelling to listen to. i remember reading that they originally wanted to call it 'a doll's house,' which would have been exactly right. it's their most brilliantly sequenced album; every song is exactly where it needs to be to have the maximum effect. the back-and-forth between screaming loud proto-metal and extremely EXTREMELY quiet ballads on side three in particularly i've always found really unnerving. so many of the songs sound like they're on the verge of just collapsing into random noise -- 'helter skelter,' 'revolution 9' of course, but even more innocuous numbers like 'don't pass me by' or 'ob la di.' plus there are so many songs that just don't sound like any other beatles songs -- 'cry baby cry' and 'happiness is a warm gun' seem darker and creepier to me than any lou reed i've heard.
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 8 July 2011 23:42 (thirteen years ago)
Improv drone noise ending to "Long Long Long" currently my favorite all-time Beatles musical moment. And wouldn't you know it, I forgot to put it on the ballot! That always happens with that song...
― Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 8 July 2011 23:44 (thirteen years ago)
Back whenever, I had the dream of putting the Beatles "tribute" band together that would have reflected "the 1968 show".
Eventually, I realised that the people that would go and see a Beatles trib band would want only the nice hits and a bit of costumes. Not the real band experience.
Compare: What Abba tribute act would start with "I'm a marionette" then do a Rachmaninov number and a daft dance medley? Well, that would be the real Abba, on the "Abba" movie.

I think Manson should write a 33 1/3 book on the White Album. Well, not really, though someone could probably compile one from random quotes. Which brings me to another Manson (Marilyn) and his 1999 PR nightmare with the Columbine shootings. How come no rightie/fundie nutbags blamed the Beatles' music for Tate-LaBianca? Or did they?
― thewufs, Saturday, 9 July 2011 16:30 (thirteen years ago)
The Manson thing was all a cover-up perpetrated by a bunch of family members that had gotten into some bad drug deals and were inventing this acid-fried conspiracy in hopes that police would buy it. They had killed (or so they thought, he actually survived) a member of the Black Panthers during a botched deal, and decided that making it look like a HELTER SKELTER race war was the best way to get the heat off them. No doubt everyone was fried on drugs and paranoia so they probably believed it to some degree, but it seems that the mythos was more like a poorly conceived cover-up.

Probably a bad source but I recently read "Manson in His Own Words: The Shocking Confessions of 'The Most Dangerous Man Alive'", where he details pretty much what went down.
I mean 'cover-up' as in, after they killed some people, they decided to use it to make it look like someone else did the murders. I previously thought they had gotten the ideas to kill first from the Beatles album, which doesn't seem to be the case, according to Manson's account.

Have now voted. My list doesn't look anything like I thought it would - lost of Beatles songs which I have liked and which I think are 'better' didn't make the cut in the end, and several which are very uncool and unlikely to get anyone else voting for them made it, just because I liked the sound of them over the last few days (perhaps because I haven't overplayed them before).

― Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Monday, 11 July 2011 09:22 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah maybe we should give a slightly longer break between them - as in wait for the polling and the results are done for one before starting another (rather than starting the polling for one as the results come in for the other). Otherwise people will get sick of em.

RIght, have assimilated all the votes, so...
51 ballots received, that's pretty good...

― second only to popcorn (or something), Monday, 11 July 2011 17:52 (thirteen years ago)
Pavement had more voters than The Beatles, which seems totally strange.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 July 2011 17:55 (thirteen years ago)
Didn't vote for Beatles as all energies were focused on the 50s. Looking forward to these results however, will lurk gleefully.
― Stanley Tunechi (Spectrist), Monday, 11 July 2011 17:58 (thirteen years ago)
Results time?
― Josef K-Doe (WmC), Wednesday, 13 July 2011 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

I was jamming the shit out of the White Album yesterday and it made me wish I could include 3 or 4 more cuts off that album.
― kkvgz, Wednesday, 13 July 2011 14:48 (thirteen years ago)
