HOLY SHIT WHY DIDN'T THIS COME OUT IN JUNE??????????

This is the single of the year RIGHT HERE. She has lost her mind in the most aesthetically-pleasing manner possible.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

What what what what is it like?

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Deeply infectious beat which MUST be a Neptunes production (minimal and slinky with an insistent buzzing synth melody; think "Grindin'" with a melodic hook) and a bassline that is one note on the fourth beat (MADNESS) complete with framing samples (old-skool harmonies at the beginning, fierce go-go breakdown at the end) complete with Missy spitting some of the most ridiculous rhymes she's ever come up with, including backwards-masked gibberish, requests that gentlemen callers give her notice before coming over so she can shave her "cho-cha", comparisons to Halle Berry, and ridiculous Dr. Seuss couplets. It's also one of the wordiest tracks I've heard her do.

Love the way my ass go ba-bomp-a-bomp-bomp
Keep your eyes on my ba-bomp-a-bomp-bomp
You think you can handle this ka-donk-a-donk-donk?
Take my thong off and my ass go BOOM!
Cut the lights on so you can see what I can do.

SINGLE OF THE YEAR.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

*speechless*

*grinning*

dan let us hold hands and frolic in missy's meadows

bob zemko (bob), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

...it's OVER man! haha i'm so happy

bob zemko (bob), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

jesus christ this is *amazing*. catchiest thing i've heard since... oh, i don't know when. i'm looking forward to waking up to this tomorrow morning.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

this is astonishingly odd, missy's vocals ("sound-fx" is prob more accurate here) are fantastic, more thoughts when i'm not falling asleep maybe, but one thing: i don't think this is a neptunes production. i'd have said it's denser than neps stuff, but in a post-"grindin" world, it's hard to say. and clipse's "the real" starts off with some old-skool turntable soundz. but this still strikes me as a grabbag of new timbaland trix, tho he's somehow avoided his usual self-referential urges. plus there's the longstanding tim-missy connections which prob haven't fallen apart just yet. and not so soon after 'freak'. (which is better than this.)

mitch lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

if you a fly gal get yr nails done!
get a pedicure!
get your hair DID!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that the percussion from "Heart of Glass"?

Jody Beth Rosen, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh my god. OH MY FUCKING GOD.

THIS IS MY NEW SINGLE OF THE YEAR. For all the reasons outlined above PLUS the ELEPHANT SOUNDS that I think they're using in place of curse-word bleeps. DAMN DAMN DAMN

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 5 September 2002 00:55 (twenty-three years ago)

that's not an elephant it's a cockasauraus

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 5 September 2002 01:06 (twenty-three years ago)

"I'll make you as hot as Las Vegas weath-ah!"

Jody Beth Rosen, Thursday, 5 September 2002 01:13 (twenty-three years ago)

wait it's "get your NOSE done" -- haha that's SO much better!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 5 September 2002 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, Ms. Jade's "Ching Ching" is k-cool on the grindin sound.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 5 September 2002 04:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Can someone Grokepile?

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 5 September 2002 05:16 (twenty-three years ago)

it's on filepile now, Tom --> http://www.filepile.org/index.php/file/98456

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 5 September 2002 05:40 (twenty-three years ago)

And already it's got a bad vote!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 5 September 2002 06:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's marvellous. Well that's the next Focus Group sorted out.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 5 September 2002 06:55 (twenty-three years ago)

does anyone know what this is being released on? surely not another Missy album, already...?

ryan, Thursday, 5 September 2002 07:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone who thought Missy would never top "Lick Shots" is now officially WRONG. Single of the year.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 5 September 2002 08:29 (twenty-three years ago)

New album out November 17/18!

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 5 September 2002 09:29 (twenty-three years ago)

It's fantastic (thanks Nate). I also love Dan Perry's description.

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Crikey, is this grebt or what? 'Make a toaster' = my new favourite euphemism

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I was dancing on the bus all the way up to Oxford!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Now I feel sad not having heard it...this is the kind of thing that makes me want to sneak off of work and go home and download stuff.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, very good indeed, esp. the backwards vocal bit in the refrain. Doesn't scream "single" to me at the moment, but I suspect I'll soon get over it.

zebedee, Thursday, 5 September 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

'Let's make a toaster' line is up there with Jay-Z's 'I'm a toaster myself (sic)' from Snoopy Track, which always cracks me up. And the backwards chorus rivals ODB's Shimmy Shimmy Ya. I'm smitten. Non-filepile members can find it on my site, as-per-usual.

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 5 September 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i like it but its not made the impact on me its made on others here and its no more 'phenomenal' than the other Missy hits we know and love (remember how extraordinary/bizarre/daft 'The Rain' sounded at the time?) and it still seems like a Timbaland thing tho he's clearly been nervously looking over his shoulder at the Neps a lot more lately

i really hope there's not an acapella version ;)

blueski, Thursday, 5 September 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I hated "The Rain" when it first came out. Actually, the first Missy single that I liked from the day it dropped was "She's A Bitch"; the rest were growers (and I'm still not completely convinced by "Hot Boys" or "Beep Me 911").

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 September 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

GREATEST SONG EVER.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 September 2002 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Jeez. Don't believe the hype! I thought I was going to hear some kind of bizarro funk apocalypse... underwhelmed.

Ben Williams, Thursday, 5 September 2002 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

this doesn't sound like a very big step for timbaland. missy doesn't really sell it, excepting the hook. i prefer "are we cuttin", which i could prolly filepile. how do i do that

boxcubed (boxcubed), Thursday, 5 September 2002 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought I was going to hear some kind of bizarro funk apocalypse...

YOU DID. It's not my fault you can't recognize the bizarro funk apocalypse when it stomps on your kicks and slaps your mama.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 September 2002 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, sorry. It's nice and all, but I expect Timbo to create a new genre every time out... not doing it here. Actually, the funny thing is that Missy carries the beat, when it's normally the reverse... most interesting thing to me is the little samples he drops every now and then around the edges...

But "She's a Bitch" is my least favorite Missy single, so mileage does vary...

Ben Williams, Thursday, 5 September 2002 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

personally, this single has nothing to do with timbaland. it's all about missy. can you not hear that? or are you just busy deciding how much of a "step" has been made?

GOD i hate timbaland dullards. it's like fckin' photek all over again

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 5 September 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"Actually, the funny thing is that Missy carries the beat, when it's normally the reverse... most interesting thing to me is the little samples he drops every now and then around the edges..."

yes, how "funny". zzzz

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 5 September 2002 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

yeh, lets find these timbaland dullards, and teach them SOMETHIN! who are you talking about, bob zemko!!?

boxcubed (boxcubed), Thursday, 5 September 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

surely though, a body could concievably be -unimpressed- with this missy performance AND this timbaland performance and be more surprised with timbaland not coming through?

boxcubed (boxcubed), Thursday, 5 September 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Bob. If you chilled out for a sec, you'd see you basically said the same thing as me.

Ben Williams, Thursday, 5 September 2002 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

don't worry man, i'm cool!

ben: don't try it. both of yr comments were first based on "ooh! a new TIMBALAND beat! hmm timbaland has disappointed me today" then in yr case ben "oh isn't it FUNNY haw haw how missy is carrying the song when it's usually TIMBALAND my futurist luverrr". funny != declaration of missy's supremacy hyah.

(yet again) "most interesting thing to me is the little samples he drops every now and then around the edges"

yes ben obv you love missy. how is this anything LIKE what i said?

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 5 September 2002 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not head over heels about the beat either. but still, what jess said

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 5 September 2002 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

O-kayyyy....

Yes, I don't think the beat is up to some of Timbaland's past stuff.

Instead, I think Missy carries the song. ie, "it's all about Missy."

That's where we agree.

(And for the record, I think that generally, Timbaland's beats have played a greater role in the partnership; but I luv Missy to death. Whatever other interpretation you may put on the word "funny" is entirely up to you.)

Now fuck off, asshole.

Ben Williams, Thursday, 5 September 2002 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"Love is in the air..."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 September 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the first Missy Elliot song I've heard that I totally like. The lyrics Dan quoted are amazing. I can't wait till the video.

Kris (aqueduct), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, those lyrics made me very happy. (I first downloaded some mix that was just the chorus looped and I was like what the hell!?) Is she speaking Chinese after the "boys" part?

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I already broke your posts down for you telling you why I couldn't see how you were agreeing with me! if i got the wrong end of the stick then clarify.

"(quote me) That's where we agree." oh NOW i see, right.

"whatever other interpretation you may put on the word "funny" is entirely up to you"

well don't blame me for not being a mindreader then. stop getting in such a little bitchhuff cos i disagreed (??????????????) with you over a RECORD.

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i am listening to it in reverse... the backwards part just repeats "put my thang down flip it and reverse it" and the part in the verse says "watch the way missy like to take it back, woah".

Honda, Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

What you two are saying is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! (do you *see*?)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it is "nails done" after all. oh well. i luv deez hoez anyway.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

niiice. that 'drummer boy' reference should keep this one charting until christmas.

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

This should become the new karaoke standard for Sarah and Emma.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i can't say i really like the samples; someone above said it's good timba grew out of his selfreferencing but what is this? aligning hisself with hiphop history? i don't really see any reason to see the track as an oldschool update, and it doesn't play with "classic" hiphop sentiments in any specific way. it just sounds like straight future to me, mang. the samples aren't even good braggadocio no more, just empty facile blah.

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 5 September 2002 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

hopefully more people will be using the terms "cho-cha" and "ba-donk-a-donk" now.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 5 September 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

heehee... speaking of ba-donk-a-donk"....

Ben Williams, Thursday, 5 September 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Gobsmackingly good, if you don't like it then you're just acting dumb like "yeah, der". What's that sample at the end? Run DMC?

Mike (mratford), Thursday, 5 September 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes (answering my own question), it's "Peter 'bad meaning GOOD' Piper".

Mike (mratford), Thursday, 5 September 2002 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorta. Bob James' "Take Me To The Mardi Gras" (as sampled in "Peter Piper"). It woulda been funnier if they'd sampled the part that comes AFTER the percussion -- perhaps TOO funny.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 5 September 2002 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

heehee... speaking of ba-donk-a-donk"....

YO!

Jody Beth Rosen, Thursday, 5 September 2002 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not as overwhelmed as some of you guys are, but I'm damn impressed. then again, I'm at an internet cafe w/dodgy headphones (thanks, Nick K!)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 5 September 2002 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone else here the intro to "Heart of Glass" running through the whole awesome thing?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 6 September 2002 01:12 (twenty-three years ago)

whoops, Jody Beth spotted it first!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 6 September 2002 01:13 (twenty-three years ago)

can anyone actually confirm that Tim did the beat? everyone's operating on that assumption, but it really didn't sound like him to me (although admittedly, i've only heard it once so far, and he's been known to surprise before). if it ain't him, that would be pretty much a first for a single off her own records, but she's been doing a lot of guest spots with other producers lately, and maybe it'd do her good to not rely on him quite so much.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 6 September 2002 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Her guest spot on the "You're So Vain" remake is the best thing she's ever done for much the same reason -- she works best carrying her own voice, also the track with Eminem off Da Real World.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 6 September 2002 03:59 (twenty-three years ago)

well if it's not timbaland then judging by our instant assumptions whoever it is has made a right dick of himself. but i'm sure it is.

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 6 September 2002 08:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Half-baked instant response: this is to "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See" as "Get UR Freak On" is to "Woo-hah! I Got You All In Check".

(which occured to me because this "Work It" is *so* Missy's most Busta-like moment yet)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Imagine the child of Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

a sexy fat guy with dreads in a megaman costume who can't flow?

Josh (Josh), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

oh you meant the other kid

Josh (Josh), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha according to Josh, Missy + Busta = MAGOO!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 6 September 2002 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

that sounds about right, actually....

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 6 September 2002 16:27 (twenty-three years ago)

The chorus (only) is on Missy's Elektra site, and that was enough to turn my head a complete 360 degrees. Wow! I'm all anxious and sweaty now. I'm getting ready to leave work and see if Ameoba has a single. I never buy singles, but this is one I can't wait for the album for!

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

It's an absolutely stupendous record. Gets better with every listen too.

Venga, Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

They told me the single wasn't out yet!! : (

Sean (Sean), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well duh. is it all over the radio yet sean?

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Has everyone heard the new Miss Jade track? I'm sure you know where to find a copy. I'm smitten, but then again the tracks he's chewing over some of my favourite beats from last year.

nick.K (nick.K), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

More responses, I'm out the door and downtown in a minute.... Ok you've a couple of minutes, I'm gonna do the washing up (not very bling bling I know)

nick.K (nick.K), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Prompt...... general feedback in here is baaaaad. Tsk, whadda they know.

nick.K (nick.K), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

"Ching Ching" is interesting in terms of how little emphasis is placed on the beat - it's all about those percussomelodic vocal riffs.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

good point, but man, that vocal riff is *amazing* - i like how winded bubba sparx sounds while rapping and nelly furtado's voice is a really nice match... is this really a retread??

dave k, Friday, 20 September 2002 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Well yeah, that's sorta my point. Who cares about the beat when the riff is crowding everything else out of your head. (thought: what did they come up with first: the riff or the chorus?)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I am so happy with the new minimalism and the floating vocal samples. This kick's "Work It" so hard -- mainly because Missy sounds a bit lazy and Ms. Jade sounds urgent. That and Clipse will put together the new sound. JADE MUST STAY!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway I'm super happy because amp put up "Lookout Weekend" which does the grindin' beat better and I've always heard a mix with about twice the beats which is more aggro but actually less good.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

is it all over the radio yet sean?

Hell if I know, I haven't heard the radio in about 5 years. So is it?? Where are all you people hearing it?

Sean (Sean), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

my friend is a nelly furtado fan and tells me the vocal riff is actually a sample from her album, so i guess they wrote the chorus afterwards, which is pretty cool.

dave k, Friday, 20 September 2002 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

man, i love ilm.

brian badword (badwords), Friday, 20 September 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

sum of yall dun no wad da fuck ur talkin bout all missy's songs rda joint but work it is da best . and if u talk shit on mo time i swear!but iam a fly gul and iama bout to get muh nails dun
HoLLA
Brey

?×?Brêÿ?×?, Saturday, 28 September 2002 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I shouted very loud when I heard this on the radio about a week ago. So is she planning on redefining pop music every year from now on? I wouldn't mind that...

Dan I., Saturday, 28 September 2002 21:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I need the answer please.....
The question is... How the heck am i supposed to get the lyrics to Missy Elliott's New Song called: "Work It"?? Someone please e-mail me with the answer..... Please please... By 2:00 this afternoon, Sep: 29th 2002.

Michael Rush Walter, Sunday, 29 September 2002 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Priscilla Brunson, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

[Chorus]
Is it worth it, let me work it
I put my thang down, flip it and reverse it
If you got a big [elephant], let me search it
To find out how hard I gotta work ya

[Verse 1]
I’d like to get to know ya, so I can show ya
Put the pussy on ya, like I told ya
Gimme all your numbers so I can phone ya
Your girl acting stank than call me yova
Not on the bed, lay me on your sofa
But before you come I need to shave my chocha
You do or you don’t or you will or you won’t cha
Go downtown and eat it like a vulcha
See my hips and my tips don’t cha
See my ass and my lips don’t cha
Lost a few pounds in my whiffs for ya
This the kinda beat that go bha ta ta
Ra ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ta
Sex me so good I say blah blah blah
Work it, I need a glass of water
Boy oh boy its good to know ya

[repeat chorus]

[verse 2]
If you’re a fly gyal, then get your nose done
Get a pedicure, get your hair did
Boy lift it up, lets make a toasta
Lets get drunk, its gon bring us closa
Don’t I look like a HalleBerry posta?
See dem Belvedere playin tricks on ya
Girlfriend wanna be like me neva
You won’t find a bitch that’s even betta
I make it hot as Las Vegasweatha
Listen up close while I take you back
I’m not a prostitute but I can give you whatchu want
I love your braids and your mouth full of fonts [?]
Love the way my ass bump bump bump bump bump bump
Keep your eyes on my bump bump bump bump bump
And think you can handle this ga-dunk ga-dunk dunk
Take my thong off and my ass go boom
Cut the lights off so you see what I can do

[repeat chorus]

[verse 3]
Boys, boys, all type of boys
Black, white, Puerto Rican, Chinese boys
White like Antonio
Girls, girls, get that cash
If its not a foul shakin that ass
Ain’t no shame ladies, do your thang
Just make sure you ahead of tha game
Just cuz I got a lot of fame supa
Prince couldn’t get me change my name howpa

Picture black sand oh yes amassa
Picture Lil’ Kim dating a pastor
Minute man big red can outlast ya
Who is the best, I don’t have to ask ya
When I come out, you won’t even matta

So you act dumb like ughhh, duh
And the drummer boy go pa rum pum pum pum
Give ya some some some of this in a bun

[repeat chorus]

To my fellas,
Good God, I like the way you work that
[scratching]
To my ladies, woo
You sure know how to work that, good God

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

"mouth full of fronts" (tooth-bling)

"call before you come" (© Outkast)

and i'm pretty sure she's getting her nails done - nose would've been funny but FUCK that nosejob shit!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

It's "picture Black Sam Oh yesum massah" not black sand

Jennifer Kirkpatrick, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It's "Picture blacks sayin' 'Oh yessah massah'".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I kinda figured the bit after "Chinese boys" was just "wai to taya to tai tai" in fake-o "asian" playground speak. Am I mishearing this?

g.cannon (gcannon), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

is she saying that Kim is hooking up with Pastor Troy??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

By the way, I just nabbed those lyrics from another message board.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

yo I love this singele. It makes no type of sense, and that's why I love it so much!! I like her singles too, but she should come out with more singles like that more often. Yo big ups to her. Keep doing what your doing! ~ From the One And Only.... Lady Prophet out that MIA~

Tita, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

"is she saying that Kim is hooking up with Pastor Troy??"

Ha ha yes I immediately wondered this as well.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Give ya some some some of this in a bun

I always heard that as
Give ya some some some of this cinnabun

H (Heruy), Thursday, 3 October 2002 08:39 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah me too H

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 3 October 2002 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

OK seriously; when is this coming out?

Sean (Sean), Friday, 4 October 2002 04:56 (twenty-three years ago)

what is Missy saying during the song? She says all throughout the song.Where can we get the lyrics to this song?

Emo1214, Friday, 4 October 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

If I don't get an answer as to when this is coming out (it doesn't say on the Elektra website) or where I can here a full-length track online, my head's going to explode.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 4 October 2002 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

If you have a PC, download WinMX (http://www.winmx.com). You can find it very easily on there.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 4 October 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

From what I've been told by a couple of people who were invited to a listening session, the entire upcoming album is just as good as "Work It."

Damn. Guess Missy really is on the slide then

Missy 'Misdemeanor' Elliott - "Work It"

Lyrics:
DJ, please pick up your phone
I'm on the request line

This is a Missy Elliott one-time exclusive (Come on)

Is it worth it, let me work it
I put my bang down, flip it and reverse it
It's your fremme neppa venette
It's your fremme neppa venette

If you got a big ***, let me search it
And find out how hard I gotta work ya
It's your fremme neppa venette
It's your fremme neppa venette

I'd like to get to know ya so I could show ya
Put the p**** on ya like I told ya
Gimme all your numbers so I could phone ya
Your girl actin' stank then call me over
Not on the bed, lay me on your sofa
Phone before you come, I need to shave my chocha
You do or you don't or you will or won't ya
Go downtown and eat it like a vulture
See my hips and my tips, don't ya
See my a** and my lips, don't ya
Lost a few pounds and my whips for ya
This the kinda beat that go ra-ta-ta
Ra-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta
Sex me so good I say blah-blah-blah
Work it, I need a glass of water
Boy, oh, boy, it's good to know ya

Is it worth it, let me work it
I put my bang down, flip it and reverse it
It's your fremme neppa venette
It's your fremme neppa venette

If you got a big ***, let me search it
And find out how hard I gotta work ya
It's your fremme neppa venette
It's your fremme neppa venette (Come on)

If you a fly gal get your nails done
Get a pedicure, get your hair did
Boy, lift it up, let's make a toast-a
Let's get drunk, that's gon' bring us closer
Don't I look like a Halle Berry poster
See the Belvedere playin' tricks on ya
Girlfriend wanna be like me, never
You won't find a b**** that's even better
I make you hot as Las Vegas weather
Listen up close while I take it backwards
I'm not a prostitute, but I could give you what you
want
I love your braids and your mouth full of floss
Love the way my a** go bum-bum-bum-bum
Keep your eyes on my bum-bum-bum-bum-bum
And think you can handle this gadong-a-dong-dong
Take my thong off and my a** go vroom
Cut the lights off so you see what I could do

Is it worth it, let me work it
I put my bang down, flip it and reverse it
It's your fremme neppa venette
It's your fremme neppa venette

If you got a big ***, let me search it
And find out how hard I gotta work ya
It's your fremme neppa venette
It's your fremme neppa venette (Come on)

Boys, boys, all type of boys
Black, white, Puerto Rican, Chinese boys
Why-thai,-thai-o-toy-o-thai-thai
Rock-thai,-thai-o-toy-o-thai-thai
Girl, girl, get that cash
If it's 9 to 5 or shakin' your a**
Ain't no shame, ladies do your thang
Just make sure you ahead of the game
Just 'cause I got a lot of fame supa
Prince couldn't get me change my name papa
Kunta Kinte a slave again, no sir
Picture black sayin', "Oh, yes a master"
Picture Lil' Kim dating a pastor
Minnie Me and Big Ren can out last ya
Who is the best, I don't have to ask ya
When I come out you won't even matter
Why you act dumb like "Uh, duh"
So you act dumb like "Uh, duh"
As the drummer boy go ba-rom-pop-pom-pom
Give you some-some-some of this Cinnabun

Is it worth it, let me work it
I put my bang down, flip it and reverse it
It's your fremme neppa venette
It's your fremme neppa venette

If you got a big ***, let me search it
And find out how hard I gotta work ya
It's your fremme neppa venette
It's your fremme neppa venette (Come on)

To my fellas
I like the way you work that
To my ladies
You sure know how to work that

Be Happy~!

fremme neppa venette, eh?

g.cannon (gcannon), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Having finally heard this (I was busy catching up on other things) -- definitely good fun! But revelatory, no...not really. Why, I'm not sure, but I'm a touch surprised at all this explosion of sheer happy-hoohah over it. I actually like the arrangement on something like "Dirrty" better, though I've concluded that Ms. A actually gets more in the way of that song than I first realized.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Never said it was relevatory (beyond Missy producing a rap that actually has flow), just that the "good fun" factor was way above what you would think it would be.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Heard it a few days ago. Decent track, well produced. We've heard that Timbaland-type sound by now, but the same can be said for, say, the Neptunes, the Eiffel 65/Gigi d'Ag sound, Belgian poptrance, or the Live/Nickelback/Creed nu-grunge template, so that's not really a fault for this kind of music - it's no better or worse than any other recent pop track, I'd say. Pretty much on a par with, say, Las Ketchup or Scooter, in the sense that it's a nice mindless, nonsensical party track (although from rather different origins, obviously) we'll probably remember.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I'm not saying you were saying it was revelatory or whatever, Dan! I was just expecting my mind to be thoroughly blown rather than being merrily entertained based on a slew of the initial comments, and not just from you -- there was something in the tone that was telling me that! Siegbran's take strikes me as the best assessment -- maybe a month away from the initial impact helps. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

(Taking sides: revelatory vs relevatory FITE!)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

(I'm going to get a t-shirt made that says, "It's your fremme neppa venette")

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

See, I would buy this shirt and wear it proudly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

what does "fremme neppa venette" mean anywayz??????

maricela aguilera, Monday, 7 October 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

It's this thing...

bnw (bnw), Monday, 7 October 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't it something backwards? She does talk about reversing just before.

NickH, Monday, 7 October 2002 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I think is "I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it" backwards, but it's much more entertaining to hear it as "It's your fremme neppa venette.")

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I still think the one line is "Picture Black Sam" (as in Sambo).

Burr, Monday, 7 October 2002 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

"Iss not fermitted das why in yatum."

Burr, Monday, 7 October 2002 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah a month later it has worn off, (just cos of the tedium beat which was the case abt the 2nd time i heard it) but "mindless nonsensical party tune" does it a HUGE disservice. you try getting some "conscious" blowhard to get some nonsense to sound that good...

as a electrifying taster it's still great, but are we 100% sure this is the forthcoming single anyway?

bob zemko (bob), Monday, 7 October 2002 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

(cf why noreaga is a genius)

bob zemko (bob), Monday, 7 October 2002 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Hell, a couple weeks later it's worn down. But I still turn up the radion when it comes on.

Dan I., Monday, 7 October 2002 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

this is the best song that has come out recently. it has a bangin beat and it great to dance to at the club.

india hayes, Wednesday, 9 October 2002 04:48 (twenty-three years ago)

they say that she says something backwards and really freaky when she says

Its your femme nepa venyakama

Sprinkles Goldenhorn, Thursday, 10 October 2002 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Missy's 'Street Team' were working Oxford Street yesterday! There was a woman with headphones, a DAT machine and a mic trying to get vox pops about something (I assume "Work It") - she was stopping people and going "Hey, you like Missy dont you?". I tried to catch her eye but failed because I do like Missy. "Missy who?" said the woman she was trying to interview.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 11 October 2002 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I have scientifically confirmed when you take the backwards sample and make it play forwards she says "Orange Julius was better when it had an egg in"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone seen the video yet? That too is genius, if only for the bees and Prince.

Rose, Saturday, 12 October 2002 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

The other backwards bit about 2 minutes in is "Don'y you like how Missy does it backwards".

Graham (graham), Saturday, 12 October 2002 12:02 (twenty-three years ago)

video is a slightly new mix than what got released on the Internet - when she says "picture Black Sam sayin 'yessuh massah'" now there's a big "NO!!" shouted out by some background vocalists.... just to make it clear I guess...

and apparently the word "chocha" is too dirty for MTV!! it's blanked out! in general the video is grebt if not exceptional... continues her spooky/odd thing and i admire them for trying to actually literalize Missy's oddball lyrics

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 13 October 2002 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i love that on the radio they replace "chocha" with "chacha"

dave k, Sunday, 13 October 2002 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

LEAKIA STUDMIRE, Monday, 14 October 2002 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

oy or boy isa good to know ya

Darw, Monday, 14 October 2002 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

What's even funnier in the video is that they edit "Go downtown and eat it like a vulture" by cutting out "eat it," as apparently those are offensive words to MTV. Odd.

Nick A., Monday, 14 October 2002 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i find the video lackluster

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with you totally, Chaki; the video made me like the song considerably less than before.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 30 October 2002 05:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the single edit is cheesy -- they really have to bleep "chocha"? That's not even English!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 05:59 (twenty-three years ago)

it's on the radio right now, only 2nd time i ever heard it, it rules rules rules!

I don't know, the part where the Prince imitator is drooling over her is pretty classic. Also, HALLE BERRY!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

So, I finally heard/saw the vid for this, and I must admit.....it's fucking great. Oh were that all contemporary Hip Hop artists this imaginative and inventive!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

that guy doesnt even look like prince. i wanted monsters and sick ass shit. its just yer run of the mill hype williams thang.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I think he was supposed to be more the suggestion of Prince than anything else. Besides, bee-covered DJs are always great, and that little girl was CUTE. Plus the forwards-backwards stuff is the best use of that particular trick since Roni Size's "Brown Paper Bag" video.

And don't forget HALLE BERRY!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Does the video explain the meaning of FREMME NEPPA VENETTE?

Yes -- it says, "Please call Tim Finney collect for this information." ;-)

missy, Saturday, 2 November 2002 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

there should be a contest to see who can pronounce that reversed bit in Missy's song: Is it worth it, let me work it, i put ma thang down flip it and reverse it. Its your fremma neppa neh neh neppa, its your fremma neppa neh neh neppa. If you gotta big **** let me search it don't matta how hard i gotta work ya, it your fremma neppa neh neh neppa. Now that sounds closer to the song than what's been given previously.

Leo, Tuesday, 5 November 2002 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Dear "Work It",

I don't know how to tell you this tactfully, and I hate beating around the bush, so I've just gotta say it: I've grown bored of you. I don't know what happened. It was a steamy, fiery affair we had indeed, and a lot of fun while it lasted. Who knows, maybe the undercurrent of doubt was there all along and I just did an ace job of stifling/ignoring it. Don't take it personally. Honest, I did my very *very* best to convince myself that those backwards lyrics were really exciting, real cutting-edge pop. And I really do admire that minimal bassline! You know I've never thought it was too "stark" -- it's not how many notes you play, it's how you play them (yeah it's a cliche but it's really true). So don't go feeling bad about yourself, 'kay? It's not you, it's me, and it just took me a little while to figure out that this isn't where I want to be. I guess the first sign might've been when you made fun of those Chinese guys -- haha it's just a joke, a laugh, I told myself at first, but somewhere in the back of my mind I wondered if I could ever be with someone who said such things so casually. Then your video -- I mean, I could tell you put a lot into it, but it just left me... wanting, somehow. Like when you think something's too good to be true and you turn out to be right. What we had was hot, I can't deny that; you searched me, you worked me, and I loved it. But -- (Jesus this sounds lame and I'm sorry) -- I'm getting to that age where I need more from a relationship. Maybe I just expect too much, but I can't hide my dissatisfaction; that's not fair to me, and it sure isn't fair to you. There are people out there that can love you better than I can, and that's what you deserve. uoy tegrof reven ll'I, uoy tegrof reven ll'I. ;-)

Love, Clarke

Clarke B., Tuesday, 5 November 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

YEAH! MORE HOT MISSY ACTION FOR ME!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you even fit to kiss her feet?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

The CD I have has three versions, two of which are pretty much identical, the other a little bit shorter, presumably the radio version. Each time I play it I listen to all three and I'm sad when it's over.

I love the sheer attention to detail.

Because of lyric changes elsewhere she changes 'chacha' from the line
'But before you come I need to shave my chacha'
into 'chocha' so that it rhymes with 'sofa' in the short version.

Does anyone else think the 'yessa masser' bit a a Tom and Jerry reference? I'm sure Mammy Two-shoes said stuff like that all the time, back in the day.

meirion john lewis (mei), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't think that's the case, but her "funky fresh" does contain the line "cartoon like tom and jerry"

Missy has swindled me. The CD I got today only has two tracks on, both of which are on the album (Pussycat being the other one). And the video is for 4 My People, rather than Work It. Can't complain about the tune though.

Nick H, Wednesday, 6 November 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Missy was going to give $1 million to anyone who could figure out what femme etc., actually meant. I don't know if they withdrew if becuase it was untrue or if Ananova doesn't keep stuff around for that long. Anyone seen this elsewhere?

I think ur retarded if u gotta argue over sum freakin lyrics to a song yeah the song kiks ass but u dont have to argue. Arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics........Even if u win, ur still retarded

Haywood Jablome, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 05:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe you guys haven't figured out what Missy Elliot says in that song. It's so easy.....well maybe not that easy with the naked ear, but all it takes is to convert that song to a .wav file and load into into sound forge and reverse that part that's already reversed so it's normal to find out she's saying "put my thang down flip it and reverse it". Consider that a gift from a junior sound producer.

Daniel Ochoa, Saturday, 16 November 2002 08:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Woah, thanks man, we NEVER would have figured that out.

The Jaxx remix of "4 my people" was pretty darned good, too, wasn't it?

I'm still not tired of it.

man, Friday, 22 November 2002 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I just want to let everyone behind work it know that this song inspired me to really please my man.!!!!!

Erica West, Wednesday, 27 November 2002 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

"WORK IT"

CHORUS :

Is it worth it, let me work it
I put my bang down, flip it and reverse it
I put my bang down, flip it and reverse it (Invert the sentence)
I put my bang down, flip it and reverse it (Invert the sentence)

I'm French but I understood all the same that the last sentence of the chorus is inverted.
The sentence " It's your fremme neppa venette", it is just an imagination, it is necessary to invert it to understand.

Sorry for the faults that I made but I don't speak very well English.

OK, I know that this whole lyrics thing is over...but I have a really funny comment to make. "It's your fremme neppa venette".....this is what my comment is about. I have a really cool mom (I'm 16 so this is monumental that a teenage girl will say this) and we were listening to this song on the radio and she is convinced that in Missy's jibrish she is saying "Are your hard nipples wet yet?" I think this just might be the funniest thing she has ever said. So I had to get on here and find out what she was really saying. So now I have to go and tell my mom that she was wrong about her nipple theory. I'm still laughing!

Grudge, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 00:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, Grudge? Did you take lyrics from another language, like French, and run them through an online translator to get the English equivalent? That's the most inaccurate display of the song's lyrics that anyone's come up with. I don't whether to say that sucks or congratulations. LOL!

jess nicci, Friday, 13 December 2002 01:26 (twenty-three years ago)

That was fantastic.

I your braids and your mouth completely of floss

Exactly.

OleM (OleM), Friday, 13 December 2002 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

"Why you act deaf-mute" = GENIUS

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I do not know English very well but the lyric one with the song of Missy Elliot looks at as they are correct, with me. I think you look at perhaps too narrowly.

Grudge, Friday, 13 December 2002 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

missy eliot rocks me world!

jan marie, Monday, 16 December 2002 01:40 (twenty-three years ago)

kim i assume you have heard the 'She's A Bitch/Warm leatherette' bootleg?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 December 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

"FREMME NEPPA VANETTE" is "Honor the Fire" backwards.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 December 2002 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Yo, the song is very hot but what I'm really concern about is when you say "FREMME NEPPA VENETTE" what do that word really mean cause I ani't nevea in my life hear that before. My cousin told me that you be like it's your fault my pu*** ani't wet.

D-ONE, Monday, 16 December 2002 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Josiah Barley, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 00:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Kim - SEARCH 'Warm Bitch' by Girls On Top - as you would guess, it drops the acapella of 'she's a bitch' over the instrumental of 'warm leatherette' and is predictably ace...almost as instrumental as igniting the recent bootleg craze as much as the aguilera/strokes opus

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Help me please, I need the lyrics to Interpols - "Fremme Neppa Venette"

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Missy E is boring. To me. All her songs trundle along at the same pace, all quiet, w/some nifty sound effects to distract us. OH I am disappointed, I was quite excited about her. I was wrong.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

that wouldve been a good way for the thread to die...oh well...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i want to hear&see the missy elliot work it

jake robert ward, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

But Andrew, that's just patently false. Her songs vary from the quiet ("The Rain", "Work It") to the noisy ("Sock It To Me", "Slide") and encompass a fairly decent range of tempos (compare "Get Ur Freak On" to "The Rain" to "For My People" to "Work It").

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Look i love the song and everything, but it is really bothering me that I don't know exactly what she is saying when she says, "fremme neppa vanette"can some one please tell me exactly what it means and know for sure. It would give me great pleasure!!

Clarissa Fenroy, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

it means : "Im not going to let some snot nosed punk leave my cheese out in the wind."

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm thru with being nice now...if you've actually heard 'Work It' and think 'fremme neppa venette' is what she's actually saying then you are a complete ignoramus...seriously, you dont even have to understand english to be able to tell that its a reversed lyric - i SWEAR if i didnt know the language i would still be able to figure that out, i mean come on...

die thread die!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I dig "Work It" plenty, but I think I already knew that Missy liked herself, sex and nonsense phrases. Don't mind having it repeated but I'm curious how long that will stay fresh.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 19 December 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

My perspective on Missy is very different from many of the other posters here because when she first hit the scene, I loathed her. Part of her freshness for me comes from the fact that I actually dig her now.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 December 2002 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

seriously, you dont even have to understand english to be able to tell that its a reversed lyric.

I'm now wondering whether or not this is actually true.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 19 December 2002 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

it SOUNDS reversed...basically i personally cannot believe some people, wherever they are, don't get that...its like being able to tell what a guitar sounds like

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 December 2002 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I blame the Tories, blueski. Or the Republicans.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Thursday, 19 December 2002 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

"its like being able to tell what a guitar sounds like"

Who knows what a guitar sounds like anymore, what with all the effects pedals and synthesizers and ProTools and

Real (amateurist), Thursday, 19 December 2002 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone really care to see Missy Elliots butt-naked ass? It makes me sick when she raps about it. If she bent over Bushwick Bill would probably crawl out of that mother fucker.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 19 December 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, you've just spoiled her next video treatment!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 December 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i doesnt seem like a place to find lyrics but thats where i gont mine. Only problem is that it doesn't give you the backward versus backwards. it gives you them frontwards. Confusing? :D

this song is the BEST!!!
p.s. what's up with that pic. in here? its f***** up!

Sexy Lexie, Saturday, 18 January 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

confusing

giovanni, Monday, 20 January 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard that the part that says,
"It's your fremme neppa venette!",
Says " Its your fault my p***y ain't wet yet!"
But Im still curious to find out what it realy says.

Holla'

Ivet, Thursday, 23 January 2003 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Afte recording it and reversing the song.
It has no harm.

when she says,"fremme neppa venette",
she really says,"Put my than down flip it and reverse it",
when she says, " listen up close",
She says"Watch the way likes to take it back wha'"

Holla'

PS: and apologies

I am shocked an alarmed at the level of illiteracy that goes on in threads like this. I mean, honestly people...

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"And discover how hard I obtained to work venette of neppa of fremme of the neppa venette"
I loved that line!

I always assumed she said: "I put my name down, flip it and reverse it." As in she would then say summat like: "Missy Misdemeanour Elliot!" and reverse that.

Guerillas On The Piss, Monday, 27 January 2003 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

gi66y, Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Calina Mojica, Friday, 31 January 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Missy is the best. I dont think she lost her mind she rocks. I want to be just LIke her.

Kristy Loeffler, Friday, 7 February 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I LOOOOOVE THIS SONG! Missy rocks ass. And yes that is "Heart of Glass" at the beginning, but oh well. The song still rocks.

Lola Falana, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

oh well? Heart of glass "oh well"??

why doncha just spit on my grave

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

so...i too was confused by the backwards part, but i did the sound recorder trick prescribed earlier in this thread...and it worked! all i heard was garbled crap, but then she says "i put my thang down, flip it and reverse it" ...its just the other crap backwards. the mystery has been solved. you illiterate bastards

Lola falana, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The oh well was in refrence to the fact that she bit off another artist. dumbass.

lola falana, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

so you're anti-sampling then? dumbass?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Absolutely. PEOPLE LIKE PUFF DADDY, P DIDDY, PUSSY DOT, PUFF CAKE or whatever the fuck his name is NEED TO BE SHOT BECAUSE THEY AREN'T TALENTED.

lola falana (lola falana), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Lola, have you ever considered that you might be stupid?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Missy Elliott?

To quote the Almighty Billdude:

SHE SUCHS SHE SUCKS SHE MOTHERFUCKING SUCKS!!!

Evan (Evan), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you ever considered you might be dickless?

lola falana (lola falana), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think anyone here thinks Dan Perry is dickless.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

this song gets better every time I hear it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread gets better every time I read it!

I don't think anyone here thinks Dan Perry is dickless.

Certainly not his wife.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to clarify; the idiocy comes into play for dismissing sampling outright, not for dissing P. Diddy, who is one of the most grating artists ever to grace the music scene. Even there I must disagree with the "talentless" charge; the man is a super-talented marketer and has an uncanny ear for exploting trends and pandering to the collective id, otherwise he wouldn't be as successful as he is. I will never forgive him for Ma$e, though.

(I really like how Evan's intervening post makes Lola look like he/she is calling him dickless instead of me.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i heard the frisky dj remix on deja vu last night
it's quite funny
i wanna be like missy when i grow up

schnell schnell, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

p diddy was also a super-talented producer ca. 'ready to die'

schnell schnell, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The only thing Ping Dibble did that was any good was the video to "Come With Me". You can almost feel the cocained ego dripping off every frame.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

What about Mo Money Mo Problems then? WHAT THEN!?

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The only good thing about "Mo Money, Mo Problems" is Biggie's verse. The rest of it is "HOLY FUCKING SHIT I THINK I NEED TO PULL MY EARDRUMS OUT OF MY NOSE AND SET THEM ON FIRE PLEASE GOD MAKE IT STOP" bad.

WORK IT
By: Missy Elliot
Submitted By: peetah2@aol.com
Last Corrected by: mikewasz@hotmail.com
{*scratching*} DJ please, pick up your phone
I'm on the request line {*scratching*}
This is a Missy Elliott one time exclusive
(C'mon, c'mon)

Chorus:
Is it worth it, let me work it
I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it
{*"I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it" - backwards 2X*}
If you got a big [elephant], let me search ya
To find out how hard I gotta work ya
{*"I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it" - backwards 2X*}

I'd like to get to know ya so I could show ya
Put the pussy on ya like I told ya
Gimme all your numbers so I could phone ya
Your girl actin' stank then call me over
Not on the bed, lay me on your sofa
Phone before you come, I need to shave my chocha
You do or you don't or you will or won't ya
Go downtown and eat it like a vulture
See my hips and my tips, don't ya
See my ass and my lips, don't ya
Lost a few pounds in my waist for ya
This be the beat that goes ba ta ta
ba ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ta ta
Sex me so good I say blah-blah-blah
Work it, I need a glass of water
Boy, oh, boy, it's good to know ya

Repeat Chorus

If you a fly gal get your nails done
Get a pedicure, get your hair did
Boy, lift it up, let's make a toast-a
Let's get drunk, that's gon' bring us closer
Don't I look like a Halle Berry poster
See the Belvedere playin' tricks on ya
Girlfriend wanna be like me, never
You won't find a bitch that's even better
I make you hot as Las Vegas weather
Listen up close while I take it backwards
(Watch the way Missy like to take it backwards) [backwards]
I'm not a prostitute, but I could give you what you want
I love your braids and your mouth full of floss
Love the way my ass go bum-bum-bum-bum
Keep your eyes on my bum-bum-bum-bum-bum
And think you can handle this gadong-a-dong-dong
Take my thong off and my ass go vroom
Cut the lights off so you see what I could do

Repeat Chorus:

Boys, boys, all type of boys
Black, white, Puerto Rican, Chinese boys
Why-thai,-thai-o-toy-o-thai-thai
Rock-thai,-thai-o-toy-o-thai-thai
Girl, girl, get that cash
If it's 9 to 5 or shakin' your ass
Ain't no shame, ladies do your thang
Just make sure you ahead of the game
Just 'cause I got a lot of fame supa
Prince couldn't get me change my name papa
Kunta Kinte a slave again, no sir
Picture black sayin', "Oh, yes a master"
Picture Lil' Kim dating a pastor
Minnie Me and Big Ren can out last ya
Who is the best, I don't have to ask ya
When I come out you won't even matter
Why you act dumb like "Uh, duh"
So you act dumb like "Uh, duh"
As the drummer boy go ba-rom-pop-pom-pom
Give you some-some-some of this Cinnabun

Repeat Chorus

To my fellas, ooooh
Good God, I like the way you work that
{*scratching: "Peter Piper" featuring Jam Master Jay*}
To my ladies, woo
You sure know how to work that, good God

I saw this on the [racist, mysogynist, ageist] Jay Leno show last night. It was hilarious because her fellow MC would actaully speak the backwards part. Pointing to the crowd and saying "Eff yr fmiing frr frm ya" every chorus. The crowd must have been like "wtf?"

Huh, dunno why, but I always thought "If you got a big [elephant noise], let me search ya," was "If you got a big TRUNK, let me search ya." Like, trunk as in car trunk, meaning butt (as in junk in the trunk), plus also the clever elephant pun. But I suppose "If you got a big penis, let me search ya" makes more sense, or at least simpler sense.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 May 2010 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

trunk as in elephant trunk, aka big penis

it means "EMOTIONAL"! (HI DERE), Friday, 7 May 2010 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I got it. But I always thought of car trunk for some reason. Over (under?) thinking it, of course.

been thinking... Missy's string of hits around this time, as well as songs like Justin Timberlake's Rock Your Body, were the reason for that whole nu wave of Poptimism in the early '00s, weren't they?

but in hindsight, a lot of Pop/RnB of that time seems unusually inventive/innovative, so it could be argued that a lot of it was being appreciated/championed for borderline Rockist reasons... I'm thinking of that "Pop/RnB/Mainstream Hip Hop are the most innovative areas of music out there right now" argument that was being made (which prob couldn't be made now imo)

not to open up the Popist/Rockist can of worms, just realizing how good Pop got for a moment there - but that it ticked a lot of the Rockist boxes as well
