Nominations Thread for ILX POST-1945 JAZZ ALBUMS POLL (nominations now closed)(includes Spotify playlist)

Seandalai has kindly agreed to do the tabulations , ie the important stuff that's beyond me , so without further ado lets start the nominations and see how that goes.

Will have no limits just now *unless* people get silly and we have to implement that rule. So please use common sense and nominate stuff you want to vote for rather than showing off how obscure you can go. However, I will make a biggish list of noms to start with and then everyone can fill in the important gaps of those artists. No doubt 20 people have different Miles & Coltrane albums for instance. So don't worry about filling in those important albums missing. Same goes for other artists nominated. I like things to be comprehensive as to avoid the shouts of oh album x is missing.

Have fun and feel free to start your campaigning for albums. The best thing about these polls is that you can discover new stuff, whether you're new to jazz or really into it. So please , don't worry if you don't know much, you can use the time between now and voting closing to come up with a ballot. You will enjoy discovering albums you didn't know. Hopefully we can have some really good results.

Apologies to gear if he wanted to run this since he started nominations years ago elsewhere on ilx but nothing came of it. But his nominations thread might help you with ideas.

EDITED TO ADD: A pre-album-era poll will come after this one. The nominations spreadsheet is at https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=tQQSM3avvN3nLk4gFzHWXdQ

wait I thought the Beatles poll was next

i hate it when rats eat my bushels (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:33 (fourteen years ago)

Oh sorry, I thought that the bands polls were their own things.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:34 (fourteen years ago)

plus by the time these results are due wont they be over?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:35 (fourteen years ago)

The band polls are their own things. Mark G was kind enough to delay the Beatles results this week while the 50s poll had its rollout (which turned out to be a good thing for the Beatles results, as they were improperly tabulated).

I figure whatever single-artist poll is up the week of this rollout will similarly take a delay.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:37 (fourteen years ago)

Well the results wont be for a while, don't know how long we will keep voting open for, but at least 2 weeks I imagine maybe more if need be. Don't want to put anyone out, so results will roll out when a gap arises. No one has to be put aside just to let us in.

Wait, how do these work -- are we only supposed to nominate stuff not already on the thread or do multiple nominations carry weight?

didn't even have to use my akai (Hurting 2), Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:52 (fourteen years ago)

Nominate anything you like that hasn't already been nominated. Makes it much easier for sean & i to get the nominations together.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 14 July 2011 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

No compilations btw. If compilations are nominated please point them out. Live recordings are obviously OK.

Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington

didn't even have to use my akai (Hurting 2), Friday, 15 July 2011 00:05 (fourteen years ago)

Couple of quick questions/clarifications:

1. Just albums and no comps, so I assume all pre-album jazz is out of the running? This means no Django Hot Club or Louis Hot Fives.

2. No latter day reassessments of material? For example, one could nominate John Coltrane - Live at the Village Vanguard, but not The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings.

Just want to make sure I'm clear early in the process.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 July 2011 00:09 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not sure on the 1st part. I think that is something we need to discuss on this thread. Maybe pre-war jazz comps would be ok? We will go with what the majority wants.

As for part 2 - yeah no box sets but the original live albums are totally fine.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 00:12 (fourteen years ago)

i am pro pre-war jazz comps

Hell. to. the. No. (Matt P), Friday, 15 July 2011 00:14 (fourteen years ago)

I kinda want to include the 78rpm guys, but they recorded for the singles market. I vote save 'em for a tracks poll.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 July 2011 00:16 (fourteen years ago)

How about simply allowing comps that have no overlap with previously released albums?

Samantha Mumbahton (seandalai), Friday, 15 July 2011 00:17 (fourteen years ago)

Andrew Hill - Judgment!
Andrew Hill - Point of Departure

Hell. to. the. No. (Matt P), Friday, 15 July 2011 00:19 (fourteen years ago)

Sounds fine. Greatest hits type comps is what we want to avoid really especially when said artists have made albums.
xp

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 00:20 (fourteen years ago)

ut if you look at Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives and Sevens, you either talk about the whole massive block of recordings or you are talking about a "greatest hits" of that time period. They are not the equivalent of an album recorded at most on a handful of dates.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 July 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

ut=but

EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 July 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

i think for the pre-war era comps are ok unless most people object. Im fine with it.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 00:33 (fourteen years ago)

I'd like to point out to everyone that Spotify has a fantastic jazz selection, pretty much all the bluenote for a start. So get listening!

Everyone ok with pre 1945 artists compilations then?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 11:30 (fourteen years ago)

think you need to extend that to cover stuff like the charlie parker savoy & dial recordings

ever feel like you're an ilmposter? (NickB), Friday, 15 July 2011 11:33 (fourteen years ago)

wait, that falls foul of the box set rule

ever feel like you're an ilmposter? (NickB), Friday, 15 July 2011 11:34 (fourteen years ago)

*is this allowed? Technically a compilation of sessions from the late 40s

Jeff W, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:13 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno, he did have proper albums out. I'd be inclined to say no, however others might disagree.
Were the tracks on other albums? if not then i guess that would be ok.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:17 (fourteen years ago)

It's a bit of a minefield if the Wikipedia entry is anything to go by. The 1956 version seems to be the first outing for the sessions on 12" LP though.

Jeff W, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:26 (fourteen years ago)

It's canon now anyway

Jeff W, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:28 (fourteen years ago)

well lets see what everyone else thinks and go with the majority.
If these issues occur again we can deal with it on an album by album basis and let everyone on the thread have their say.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:36 (fourteen years ago)

I'm just dreading 80s herbie hancock gets nominated and people say its not really jazz and more electronic.
Or 70s acts albums are more funk than jazz and shouldn't be in it. That will be fun..

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 12:38 (fourteen years ago)

i see someone has already nommed a spontaneous music ensemble rec, so free improv is included (d bailey turning over in his grave)?

Or 70s acts albums are more funk than jazz and shouldn't be in it. That will be fun..

Yeah, unavoidable though. I was listening to Gary Bartz "Music is my Sanctuary" last night and thinking it's a great album but the main genre difference between it and, say, War is that Bartz played with Miles once upon a time.

Marquis de Sade (outdoor_miner), Friday, 15 July 2011 14:09 (fourteen years ago)

Obviously it's all subjective, but even though fusion/jazz-funk/jazz-rock/etc albums should be included in the poll, I don't think people should nominate albums where the other side of the equation is clearly more dominant than the "jazz" side, even if they were released by famous jazz artists on established jazz labels. I consciously tried to avoid nominating albums like that, for example the Herbie Hancock electro albums. Just because Herbie plays some keyboard solos on them doesn't mean they're jazz.

One good measuring stick is, how much improvisation there is on the album? If it's more about pre-written stuff than improvisation, then it probably shouldn't be here. There are of course jazz subgenres that don't fit that criteria, but I think it's a good way decide whether or not stuff like 70s fusion albums should be included.

Tuomas, Friday, 15 July 2011 14:13 (fourteen years ago)

so you dont think mahavishnu orchestra should be included but the miles davis rock albums are ok?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

I'd say yes to that distinction.

Samantha Mumbahton (seandalai), Friday, 15 July 2011 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

The Bill Dixon Orchestra - Intents and Purposes
Bill Dixon - Vade Mecum
The Cecil Taylor European Orchestra - Alms/Tiergarten (Spree)

I agree with this, but Mahavishnu orchestra records do have a lot of improvisation -- in fact they tend to do a pretty traditional round of solos over the changes kind of thing. And yet somehow in my mind they're not jazz, and I can't put my finger on why. Maybe it's just that they SOUND like prog rock records.

didn't even have to use my akai (Hurting 2), Friday, 15 July 2011 14:58 (fourteen years ago)

i would also add that The Headhunters and The Blackbyrds, despite being on Herbie Hancock & Donald Byrd albums, their own output is infact funk.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay

dave barry (absolutely clean glasses), Friday, 15 July 2011 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

Actually I'd also say that Headhunters doesn't really feel like a jazz record for that matter. Thrust moreso.

didn't even have to use my akai (Hurting 2), Friday, 15 July 2011 15:08 (fourteen years ago)

Could someone maybe put these nominations into a Google spreadsheet so it would be easier to see what's been nominated already?

o. nate, Friday, 15 July 2011 15:10 (fourteen years ago)

There's obviously some wooly territory around the borderline - for me Headhunters is more a jazz album than it is anything else.

Samantha Mumbahton (seandalai), Friday, 15 July 2011 15:33 (fourteen years ago)

One good measuring stick is, how much improvisation there is on the album? If it's more about pre-written stuff than improvisation, then it probably shouldn't be here.

Thing is, there are Ellington songs -- entire suites, even -- that have no improvisation at all.

Then again, as Bill Dixon used to say, "All music is improvised. You can't play the same thing the same way twice."

shake it, shake it, sugary pee (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 15 July 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

Throw Raymond Scott into the "no improv" mix too.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 July 2011 15:55 (fourteen years ago)

what about vocalists

i hate it when rats eat my bushels (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 15 July 2011 15:58 (fourteen years ago)

This thread is exactly what I expected an ALL-TIME JAZZ ALBUMS POLL thread to look like.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 July 2011 15:59 (fourteen years ago)

Do New Order count as jazz?

Samantha Mumbahton (seandalai), Friday, 15 July 2011 16:25 (fourteen years ago)

I'm serious about the vocalists question!

i hate it when rats eat my bushels (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 15 July 2011 16:41 (fourteen years ago)

I would certainly hope they count.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 July 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

Do we really need to adjudicate the boundaries of what can be nominated? I think it would work out okay if we let people nominate and vote for whatever they think qualifies as jazz. If enough people think it's jazz, it will place - if they don't, it won't.

o. nate, Friday, 15 July 2011 17:27 (fourteen years ago)

She's a lot of things. I trust Tuomas's judgement, even though I haven't heard that. But I kinda agree with o.nate about easing up on the nitpicking.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 July 2011 17:45 (fourteen years ago)

I really don't get all this rigid "Is this jazz? Or rnb? Or a rock record by a jazz cat, or vice versa? Can we nom this? Plzzzz?" Just nominate and the poll will show you if most people think it is jazz or not, by how they vote. You might get a troll vote here and there, but that's it.

are these box sets? My knowledge of pre-war jazz is zilch. I need to rectify that obviously, but need help with nominations for this era.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 20:50 (fourteen years ago)

The Armstrong is a box set, not sure about the Reinhardt but I assume so.

Josef K-Doe (WmC), Friday, 15 July 2011 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

i don't know much about pre-war jazz either. they are box sets, 4 cds each, so they aren't like everything but... i can't imagine a jazz poll without them! not like this matters but i listen to them like they're albums. and they both focus on a pretty specific era for the artists.

Hell. to. the. No. (Matt P), Friday, 15 July 2011 20:56 (fourteen years ago)

maybe a 1-cd/lp comp culling tracks from the same era is more acceptable, i'm just not sure what would be.

Hell. to. the. No. (Matt P), Friday, 15 July 2011 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

I understand what you're saying, but we did agree on no box sets. Is there a single hot 5 and a hot 7 album? that would be fine.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

A box set that contains material not released in album form elsewhere absolutely should be votable imo.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

I mean, The Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings is a totally different animal than, say, something that's just all of Coltrane's Atlantic albums in a single package.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:02 (fourteen years ago)

yes, these are different than later session boxes. don't see why we can't nominate the complete hot fives rather than splitting the vote among multiple volumes. it would leave more room for other stuff too.

Hell. to. the. No. (Matt P), Friday, 15 July 2011 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

w/o that provision, a likeminded blues poll would have to exclude Robert Johnson entirely.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

well lets see if everyone agrees with you.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:06 (fourteen years ago)

There's a difference between box sets which are artifact and box sets which are just a convenient way to get several albums at once.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

I don't believe there is a Hot Fives/Sevens release that's not a complete recordings box. So it's all or nothing, and excluding one of the most important groups of the early jazz era would be nuts.

Josef K-Doe (WmC), Friday, 15 July 2011 21:10 (fourteen years ago)

But you get into weird territory with something like Coltrane's Village Vanguard recordings. One short album's worth of the recordings (3 songs, 36 minutes) were released in his lifetime; now, four packed discs (22 songs, 4 1/2 hours) of the entire residency has been released. Should the box be eligible?

As I already stated (and nobody agreed with me, so I except being voted down after this little rant) I think we're better off talking of album length recordings released as artist and/or label initially intended. Yes, this kills off pre-war jazz. Make it a separate poll and it would probably be more eclectic and interesting, like the 50s Poll ended up being.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:11 (fourteen years ago)

accept not except. Brain is not firing well.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:11 (fourteen years ago)

well we can either include it or do EZ Snappins suggestion and have a separate pre-war jazz poll. i think thats a terrific idea but will anyone do it? *looks at johnny fever & ez snappin*

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

Its a great way to stop pre war jazz being shafted and we could all learn a lot from it.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:14 (fourteen years ago)

So im not shooting you down EZ i think its a great idea

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:15 (fourteen years ago)

now, four packed discs (22 songs, 4 1/2 hours) of the entire residency has been released. Should the box be eligible?

Was all of this material available anywhere else before it appeared here? If not, then yes. It should absolutely be eligible. It's a proper artifact, presented over the course of 4 cds. It's not a reconstitution of material that was already available.

imo, it's really easy to tell the difference between what sorts of box sets are in and what sorts are out.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:15 (fourteen years ago)

I don't believe there is a Hot Fives/Sevens release that's not a complete recordings box.

Not to muddy the waters, but the first CD issues of this material on Columbia were single-disc compilations, not compiled in a box.

(and they sounded like ass)

shake it, shake it, sugary pee (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 15 July 2011 21:16 (fourteen years ago)

btw originally i was going to do a 1945-75 poll purely to avoid this problem (miles retiring being the cut off) but curtis and sean said everyone would prefer an all-time and it would just mean complaining. So either way you cant win!

ok tarfumes that looks acceptable to me! but if someone wants to do a pre-war poll that would be even better

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

seconding the idea of a pre-war jazz poll

miles retiring being the cut off

You were seriously considering this idea?

Because Miles Davis is not God, iirc.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:20 (fourteen years ago)

i would even do it, with the caveat that i know very little about pre-war jazz xp

Hell. to. the. No. (Matt P), Friday, 15 July 2011 21:20 (fourteen years ago)

i do see some sense in having a cut-off point tbh

Hell. to. the. No. (Matt P), Friday, 15 July 2011 21:21 (fourteen years ago)

I don't. It makes absolutely ZERO sense to me. There is still jazz being made.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

i dont know guys this is hard questions lol

xp yeah but it sucks j/k kind of

Hell. to. the. No. (Matt P), Friday, 15 July 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)

I argued for alltime because 45-75 is a rather arbitrary slice of history and I didn't see any point in excluding more recent albums...it hadn't crossed my mind that we'd run into trouble at the other end.

Samantha Mumbahton (seandalai), Friday, 15 July 2011 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

It would be months - at best - before I could help run a pre-war poll, but I'd love to see what Louis or Django or Woody Herman etc. tracks people would rep for.

A start date makes sense. If you want to stop at the end of the century, that'd work too. 1975 is totally random and eliminates one of my personal jazz icons from consideration.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:24 (fourteen years ago)

I do kinda like the idea of a pre-LP-era jazz poll (pre 1950? 1945?), but barring that, allowing historical-document boxes seems like the best way to go in a comprehensive jazz poll.

multixposts

Josef K-Doe (WmC), Friday, 15 July 2011 21:25 (fourteen years ago)

I guess one alternative would be to mix up albums and singles in one poll - on the (dubious) assumption that once we get into the 50s no serious jazz is being released as singles anyway (I don't really know if this is true).

Samantha Mumbahton (seandalai), Friday, 15 July 2011 21:25 (fourteen years ago)

nah i reckon we limit this poll to post 1945 and let matt p or ez or whoever do a pre-war poll. Agree or disagree?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 15 July 2011 21:40 (fourteen years ago)

1945- present day unless you want it to end 1999.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 16 July 2011 00:49 (fourteen years ago)

I have always considered M.O. a jazz(-rock) group -- I'm surprised there's any debate.

Josef K-Doe (WmC), Saturday, 16 July 2011 00:58 (fourteen years ago)

tuomas and someone else said no, but will leave it to majority to decide. Purists dont think its jazz but it is still jazz to most.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 16 July 2011 01:15 (fourteen years ago)

yep, to me it's akin to saying
Miles Davis - Jack Johnson isn't eligible which i'd totally consider voting for. can this be a nom? (thx!!)

Marquis de Sade (outdoor_miner), Saturday, 16 July 2011 01:18 (fourteen years ago)

its already nommed. I love MO, and I do want them eligible, but i can understand the thinking of "rock fans who know little about jazz will put it at the top of the ballot as its the one album they do know like with loads voting stooges in the metal poll and beating maiden, priest etc" but you cant veto because of a silly reason like that. MO are jazz.

but like i said, will leave it to a majority decision.

in or out?

just look at how awesome those John Coltrane and Miles Davis albums are. How to choose!!!!
coltrane polls on ilm never seem as well populated as miles or others so I really hope you all check out lotsa coltrane and make sure he gets lots of votes.

Spotify Playlist link

William could you or another mod please add that spotify link to the 1st post? Maybe even mention it in the thread title please? (with Spotify Playlist)will do.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 16 July 2011 13:32 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think I'm going to feel remotely well-enough equipped to vote in this poll, even with spotify etc. There are a couple of things I'd really like to rep hard for (Conquistador, Les Stances A Sophie) but I wouldn't be entirely comfortable with stating that they are the out-and-out best amongst a sea of albums I've never heard.

emil.y, Saturday, 16 July 2011 13:40 (fourteen years ago)

Title edited. Editing URLs into posts is actually a little bit of a pain in the ass. Anybody interested enough in voting in this to open the thread will find the playlist link.

Josef K-Doe (WmC), Saturday, 16 July 2011 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

Plenty of time to listen to albums and learn! Who knows when voting will end as there is no gap for a while so get on spotify and join in!

xp thanks william!

just thinking again about coltrane, he missed out in the 50s poll so please everyone familiarise yourself with him if you haven't already. Im working my way through the spotify list myself. but he really is a good place to start if youre unsure where to jump in. Dont ignore Miles pre-electric stuff either!

Think I've removed all doubles, spelling mistakes but maybe albums could be in twice under another acts name if its a duo or trio, so if anyone sees anything please let us know. Added Mahavishnu Orchestra to list since more people were for than against.
A lot of acts have quite a few albums listed but if anything important or an album you would consider voting for i missing by any act then please nominate.

I assume there's no greatest hits style comps there and all pre 45 jazz is gone but again let us know if you spot anything, thanks.

Charlie Haden - The Ballad Of The Fallen
Carla Bley/Paul Haines - Escalator Over The Hill

scraping wheatus off the wheel (NickB), Saturday, 16 July 2011 22:17 (fourteen years ago)

You might want to clean up the Roland Kirk, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and The Roland Kirk Quartet nomenclature. Just pick one version and everyone will find it.

Same with Cecil Taylor & The Cecil Taylor, and Bill Dixon and The Bill Dixon. Might just want to drop all the "The" names where it is a band leader instead of a band name.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 16 July 2011 22:31 (fourteen years ago)

im not sure, that is the names on the records. However i can remove 'the'.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 16 July 2011 23:06 (fourteen years ago)

ok https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AglsYL265OYTdFFRU00zYXZ2TjNuTGs0Z0Z6SFdYZFE&hl=en_US updated. That look better?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 16 July 2011 23:14 (fourteen years ago)

A little. Volunteered Slavery is listed under both Rahsaan Roland Kirk and just Roland Kirk. I think it's actually the last album credited to just Roland (I think I'm responsible for that one - all my Kirk is listed as Rahsaan in iTunes regardless of when he recorded it).

If we're going just by what's on the records, then some of the Miles and Coltrane records need to change, as does Brotzmann's Machine Gun and probably lots of others. Gotta be consistent one way or the other.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 16 July 2011 23:37 (fourteen years ago)

I'm sorry I'm being such a nag and curmudgeon on this thread. I thank you for doing this poll, and don't normally piss all over people's parades, especially when I'm all for it.

But feel free and blame and problems on me from now on in!

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 16 July 2011 23:41 (fourteen years ago)

well if there's no objections to Rahsaan Roland Kirk and just Roland Kirk being merged then i will do it. But you know someone will bring it up during voting who didn't read this thread.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Sunday, 17 July 2011 00:11 (fourteen years ago)

Done. I just want to remind everyone that the spotify playlist is large but not complete, so anything that is not on it, please add it if you come across it. i bet neil will complete it though :)

It all depends on who votes. ILM has quite a few euro free jazz fans but who knows if they will vote. Maybe Marcello will be tempted into taking part if he still reads. Maybe Julio too hopefully. I don't participate in the jazz d-bags thread so I have no idea who will vote from it. but if any of you do, see if you can get the rest to participate. Would be nice to get a well rounded poll.

600 albums exactly nominated. No doubt plenty missing so get nominating.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 13:03 (fourteen years ago)

Charlie Parker – The Charlie Parker Story (Savoy)

I don’t if this one would be acceptable but:

Charlie Parker – The Legendary Dial Masters

Technically, this one is a compilation, but I wouldn’t consider it a “best-of”. This has to be the way that a lot of jazz fans in the compact disc era encounter the material that Bird recorded for the Dial label. It is the way that I did, anyway. However, I don't know for fact whether any of the original Dial vinyl lps ever been reissued in digital format.

Louche Affect (KMS), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

If they were out on LP, material recorded after 1945, then it's in. Live lps are acceptable no matter what is on it.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 16:47 (fourteen years ago)

Larry Young - Lawrence of Newark
Charles Mingus - Right Now!
Circle - The Paris Concert
Frank Lowe - Black Beings

James Blood Ulmer - Tales of Captain Black

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

I hate to potentially split the Alan Shorter vote, but...

Alan Shorter - Tes Esat

also:

Anthony Braxton - Creative Orchestra Music, 1976

and:

Alan Silva and the Celestrial Communication Orchestra - Seasons

shake it, shake it, sugary pee (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

Most acts have multiple albums but splits can be avoided by voting more than 1 or 2 albums per act.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 01:32 (fourteen years ago)

if you want to vote for 10 albums each by miles or coltrane or mingus then go for it.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 01:32 (fourteen years ago)

bump

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 13:00 (fourteen years ago)

This is a great undertaking. Well done. Most things I would vote for have been nominated already, but although it was used as an example, John Coltrane - Live at the Village Vanguard hasn't been nominated. And a couple of others I like:

Art Blakey - Drum Suite
Kenny Wheeler - Angel Song

Citizen Smith (Jamie T Smith), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 14:39 (fourteen years ago)

is 'Meshell Ndegeocello presents The Spirit Music Jamia - Dance of the Infidel' jazz? I thought she was r n b.

All the other albums by Ndegeocello are rnb, but this one is her jazz project album (featuring jazz musicians like Oliver Lake, Jack DeJohnette, and Cassandra Wilson). She doesn't even sing on it.

Despite what someone said, I have nothing against Mahavishnu Orchestra being included here, since they played improvised music in the fusion jazz mold, plus all of the core members are established jazz players. On the other hand, I'd be hard-pressed to call "Wave" by Tom Jobim a jazz album, as great as it is. It's mostly pre-written songs, and unlike with some other pre-written stuff such as the Duke Ellington suites, it clearly belongs to an idiom other than jazz: bossa nova. Frank Sinatra is also a borderline case, but it'd be difficult not to call most of the albums nommed here "jazz".

Anyway, I'm fine with people nominating whatever albums they think are jazz. I'm sure any ridiculously non-jazz examples will be weeded out in the voting process.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 18:57 (fourteen years ago)

ok that sounds fine. Anyone got anything to say about the albums Tuomas says isn't jazz?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 21 July 2011 11:37 (fourteen years ago)

Two more noms:

Freddie Hubbard - Sing Me A Song of Songmy
OK, so I guess people didn't think this was jazz at the time but what else do you call it? Anyway, a great weird record.

And if you ignore the non-Herbie bits

Herbie Hancock - Blow-Up

Citizen Smith (Jamie T Smith), Thursday, 21 July 2011 12:09 (fourteen years ago)

Grachan Moncur III - Evolution

The Not Liking Radiohead Awards (Turangalila), Thursday, 21 July 2011 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

Sun Ra - Other Planes of There

The Not Liking Radiohead Awards (Turangalila), Thursday, 21 July 2011 15:30 (fourteen years ago)

Also

Cecil Taylor - Silent Tongues
Cecil Taylor - One Too Many Salty Swift And Not Goodbye
Cecil Taylor - Winged Serpent (Sliding Quadrants)

The Not Liking Radiohead Awards (Turangalila), Thursday, 21 July 2011 15:47 (fourteen years ago)

I'd be hard-pressed to call "Wave" by Tom Jobim a jazz album, as great as it is.

?! this is totally a jazz album!

No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 21 July 2011 16:02 (fourteen years ago)

is the Getz/Gilberto album not jazz because it's bossa nova? crazy talk.

No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 21 July 2011 16:03 (fourteen years ago)

It's been a long time since I heard the Getz/Gilberto album, but IIRC it's more of a jazz/bossa nova hybrid with plenty of improvisation. Whereas 90% of "Wave" sounds pre-written to me.

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:41 (fourteen years ago)

Ornette Coleman - Ornette! (blimey, how did this one escape?)

Jeff W, Friday, 22 July 2011 10:39 (fourteen years ago)

Also, I feel there should be some jazz soundtrack albums on the list. Not an area I'm an expert on but how about Duke Ellington's Anatomy of a Murder score at least?

Jeff W, Friday, 22 July 2011 10:47 (fourteen years ago)

is that a nomination?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 22 July 2011 13:36 (fourteen years ago)

Sure, why not? And here's a few more soundtrack LPs to boot:

Leith Stevens - Jazz Themes from 'The Wild One'
Chico Hamilton Quintet - The Sweet Smell of Success
Kenyon Hopkins - The Hustler (OST)
Skip Martin - Music from 'Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer'

Jeff W, Friday, 22 July 2011 14:06 (fourteen years ago)

Just realized, no George Russell. So how about:

George Russell Sextet - Ezz-thetics

shake it, shake it, sugary pee (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 22 July 2011 15:33 (fourteen years ago)

Matthew Shipp - Equilibrium

little mushroom person (abanana), Friday, 22 July 2011 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

Why is the improvisation/pre-written thing so important to you?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 22 July 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

Gary Burton/Carly Bley - A Genuine Tong Funeral

That record knocks my socks off, and I don't know from Jazz.

Time to start campaigning I think. I recommend...

A couple of older Coltrane & Miles since i think everyones familiar with later era. And a few other artists where i think is a good place for people to start but of course those who know these albums can refresh their memories.

Don't forget the actual ILM Nominations Spotify Playlist

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 23 July 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

if a mod could remove the albums there that didn't show up that had to be reposted (and this post) i'd be quite grateful, thanks.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Saturday, 23 July 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think i saw eastern sounds by yusef lateef in any list, so would add that

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Monday, 25 July 2011 15:57 (fourteen years ago)

an excellent source of vitamins and minerals (WmC), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 04:21 (fourteen years ago)

It's been a long time since I heard the Getz/Gilberto album, but IIRC it's more of a jazz/bossa nova hybrid with plenty of improvisation. Whereas 90% of "Wave" sounds pre-written to me.

― Tuomas, Thursday, 21 July 2011 23:41 (Yesterday) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

Why is the improvisation/pre-written thing so important to you?

Because Wave clearly belongs to a genre other than jazz (bossa nova), but I might count it as jazz if it had a lot of improvisation (like the Getz/Gilberto album), but it doesn't. I'm more lenient with pre-written albums that at least have an jazz arrangement/instrumentation/sound, like the Duke Ellington suites. IMO for some record to be jazz it should either have a "jazz sound" or be improvisation-based music, and Wave doesn't really fit either criteria. If neither improvisation nor sound is what makes something "jazz", we could just as well be voting for funk and soul and blues albums in this poll.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 10:56 (fourteen years ago)

So do
Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
Frank Zappa - Waka/Jawaka
Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo

count?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 11:01 (fourteen years ago)

"Hot Rats", no. The other two perhaps, except they're not good enough to be in this poll. I. M. O.

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 11:05 (fourteen years ago)

I've no idea, I've never listened to Zappa.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 11:08 (fourteen years ago)

hot Rats is amazing, i know it is classed as his jazz album, seen it in fusion best of lists, but when I play it i dont consider it as listening to a jazz album tbh.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

The other two are more jazz, if you ask me, his snooty attitude to jazz (but, then again, what wasn't he snooty about?) always struck me as a bit silly

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 11:13 (fourteen years ago)

Include the records I've nominated and quit micromanaging the fuck out of this suddenly-joyless experience.

xpost: i know it's considered a classic by some and haven't heard it in 15 years but gave it a few chances then and it just didn't do anything for me except put me to sleep

Marquis de Sade (outdoor_miner), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 13:30 (fourteen years ago)

clude the records I've nominated and quit micromanaging the fuck out of this suddenly-joyless experience. ―an excellent source of vitamins and minerals (WmC),
Agree completely. Whoever said earlier that if jazz voters do not consider an album jazz then they simply wont vote for it. All this not allowing albums 'micro-management' will ruin the poll. if it wasn't such a good reminder/help with voting i would suggest not haominations whatsoever. A few albums that have been missed out and shouldn't be since Zappa is allowed: Norah Jones -Come Away With Me Norah Jones -Feels Like Home St. Germain -Tourist Gil Scott Heron -Pieces Of A Man Gil Scott Heron -I'm New Here
Guru -Jazzmatazz Vol. 1 Freestyle Fellowship -To Whom It May Concern Jungle Brothers' -Straight Out the Jungle Sarah Vaughan -Hot Jazz Sarah Vaughan -Summertime Prince -News Prince -Sign Of The Times De La Soul -3 Feet High And Rising Gang Starr -No More Mr. Nice Guy Stetsasonic -In Full Gear A Tribe Called Quest -The Low End Theory New Order -Montreux Jazz Festival '93 De La Soul -Buhloone Mindstate Dream Warriors -And Now the Legacy Begins

BlindWillyPuller, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

this is not a rap poll. and new order? really? sign of the times? naw. Norah Jones might be on blue note, but is she really jazz?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 22:32 (fourteen years ago)

wow

I think one of the ILM bylaws states New Order must be present in the nominations for any poll.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 22:41 (fourteen years ago)

I think one of the ILM bylaws states New Sockpuppet Account must be created to troll the starter of any poll.

Gloomy Sunday vs Blue Monday

Quantum of Pie (NickB), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 22:42 (fourteen years ago)

ilm with its new order and prince fanaticism reminds me of all those best ..........'insert genre' albums in the world cds in the early 90s that record execs made sure phil collins & sting were on.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

Good call, we should have some Sting on here too.

Quantum of Pie (NickB), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 22:50 (fourteen years ago)

New Order and Prince are actually the Phil Collins & Sting of ILM. Future mojo icons and multiple front covers await on mojo in a decade.

i don't know man this is a huge undertaking and if I'm going to vote in a way that's not random dart-throwing it should be 2 weeks AT LEAST. I'd be happy with a full month but I might be alone there.

This is just too overwhelming and even if this list feels pretty comprehensive I feel we're missing stuff.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 28 July 2011 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

A month sounds good. There are about a million things on this list I always meant to check out that I would like to give a proper listen to before voting. How many votes do we get btw?

oops yes! thanks!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 29 July 2011 18:24 (fourteen years ago)

Norah jones is on blue note. That album is prince's jazz album ,just like the zappa. And why shouldnt jazz rap be in a jazz poll if jazz rock is? And new order did really play that jazz fest but it is a bootleg so i can see why you should not include it. You will get a lot more voters if you allow the jazz rap.

BlindWillyPuller, Friday, 29 July 2011 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

We all agreed no. not one person said yes.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Friday, 29 July 2011 19:58 (fourteen years ago)

rap is not jazz
