Okay i'm off on holiday next wednesday so for revealing the top 50 i'm going to do 10 today, 10 tomorrow, 10 friday, 10 monday and finishing up with the top 10 next tuesday.

We had 40 ballots in total, with 164 different tracks chosen. Thanks to everyone that took part!

I'm mega mega happy that the following track scraped in...

I'm A Genius, Too! (Jamie_ATP), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 11:22 (fourteen years ago)

50. Uptown (from Dirty Mind, 1980) - 103 points, 4 votes

daaaamn the bit where everything drops out for some synthy action before launching back in is ace

I'm A Genius, Too! (Jamie_ATP), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 11:28 (fourteen years ago)

Yes!

My #19 - put it in near the end while doing frazzled lower-table chopping and changing - think it finally nicked ahead of Head and Dirty Mind for me while I was listening on bus to work the other morning. Felt tragically inappropriate, mocking even, for sleepy grey bus trip to a London office, but the more vivid for it.

Now I am in same office & I am feeling quite perky since I have the riff for this going through my head.

you don't exist in the database (woof), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 11:36 (fourteen years ago)

those fills at the end of a bar to an open high hat on the one, such a sweet feel

our clothes, our hair, we don't care

song makes me think of comic book funky prince utopia and i want to go to there

sorry for quiet video!

Quite shocked this wasn't higher...Prince at his most 'fluid' and funky...love it...

The Pastiche Liberation Front (sonnyboy), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 12:02 (fourteen years ago)

Sorry talking bout 'Uptown'...

The Pastiche Liberation Front (sonnyboy), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 12:03 (fourteen years ago)

Didn't have room left to vote for either of these, but quite happy to see them here. Good work, ILM.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 12:19 (fourteen years ago)

I am reasonably certain every song on this list will be bad-ass

PAJAMARALLS? PAJAMALWAYS! (DJP), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 13:45 (fourteen years ago)

Uptown was my #15; great to DJ back to back with any "Downtown" song. Apparently there's some great edit/remix of it on a Warp offshoot label (Arcola?), but I've never been able to track it down.

etc, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 14:41 (fourteen years ago)

i was sure i picked either "uptown" or "partyup" for my ballot, but apparently not. gotta hear it whenever i drive around minneapolis at night.

excellent image btw

I am reasonably certain every song on this list will be bad-ass

yeah he easily has over 50 great songs so I'm not really expecting anything bad to show up

unless anything from my ballot squeaks in

I'm A Genius, Too! (Jamie_ATP), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 16:43 (fourteen years ago)

I thought The Cross would be higher.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

xxp Makes me sad to say it! Honestly mistook the deadline for this weekend, somehow. Still, got pumped listening to 5 or 6 lps over the last few days.

AWeAreVEV0 (Spectrist), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

7 probably the weakest thing on here so far...? the vocal harmonies are nice but this is one where the nonsensical lyrics really grate. and the finger cymbals. it has a pseudo-mysticism vibe that just doesn't work.

No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

I elevated Uptown all the way to #3, just as well I did. 7 is awful.

meta: I presume noone minds me kicking off voting for the U2 poll while this one counts down? I doubt there's much overlap between the two.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

Kick it off.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

7 has a pretty massive hook, i feel like it's the forgotten big single (wiki says it peaked at...#7)

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

Love 7. It just barely missed out on my ballot, as did Uptown.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

I fell out of love with "7" a few years ago, dunno why. Probably just became less generally enamored of decent vocal harmonies and more interested in on-the-one dance beats. Prince's early funk stuff is still weirdly underrated, IMO - that includes stuff like What Time Is It?, too.

Don't worry. I got it.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 18:49 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't figured out why I still like "Cream" (which made my ballot); I'm still stuck on the fact that it sounded nothing like 1991 chartpop.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 18:51 (fourteen years ago)

(which is no reason to vote for it, I know)

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 18:51 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, 1991 chartpop was pretty awesome sounding, so deviating from it wouldn't be an auto plus.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

I think Prince sort of lost his grip on the zeitgeist not too long after 1991 anyway - he made some not-half-bad New Jack Swing, but some of his other attempts to stay current between, say, 1991 and 1996 just sort of got it wrong. Or they ended up underselling his songs - overreliance on chugging jeep-beat drum loops is one of the things that makes a record like Emancipation a lot less dynamite than it ought to be.

foam injected axl rose (thewufs), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

K, I just listened to Emancipation again and it's significantly more rhythmically diverse than I'd remembered. For a better example of jeep-beat fatigue, see Digital Underground, The Body-Hat Syndrome, which does work quite nicely in limited doses.

foam injected axl rose (thewufs), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

I do think Emanciaption suffers heavily from not being what people assumed it would be; I think a good amount of the material stands on its own but I can see why someone looking for Sign O' The Times (3 disc edition) would be disappointed.

PAJAMARALLS? PAJAMALWAYS! (DJP), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I referenced this on the voting thread but the biggest problem is he lost his way sonically. a lot of the 90s stuff just straight up doesn't SOUND good, the combinations of instruments + production gear come across as haphazard and lazy.

oddly I think he's largely rectified this in recent years. 2131 and Musicology in particular are both much more pleasing to the ear than a lot of his 90s stuff. (the problem now is that his songwriting has gotten lazier and his lyrics mostly insufferable since he's not interested in sex anymore)

No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 20:23 (fourteen years ago)

see Digital Underground, The Body-Hat Syndrome,

aw. there is great stuff on this record! but it is way too long and overstuffed.

No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 20:23 (fourteen years ago)

To be fair, I had no idea what to expect when I bought it for $6.99 in 2002. At the time it sounded quite dated. But era-specific production excesses/gimmicks don't irritate me the way they did 10 years ago, probably because my tastes are a fuck of a lot broader nowadays.

foam injected axl rose (thewufs), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

^^xp to DJP

foam injected axl rose (thewufs), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

I think Prince has the opposite problem nowadays, actually - lesser songs that might actually benefit from a little production gimmickry. It's easy enough to hear through "dated" production and get to the strong songs underneath with prolongued exposure. It's crazy, but I didn't even like Purple Rain much when I first bought it heading off to college in 2001 - all I heard was bad reverb on the drums.

foam injected axl rose (thewufs), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 20:33 (fourteen years ago)

aw cmon who doesn't love a little gated reverb with their Linndrums!

No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

Funny thing is, the drums sound exactly the same in concert recordings from '84 - did they use electronic pads or what? Records still shouldn't sound as if you're listening from the back row at the LA Coliseum. I guess they thought differently 25 years ago. But I guess people figured, hey, it worked for Phil Collins.

foam injected axl rose (thewufs), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

hoping Bob George makes this list btw

No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

'84... was he even using a live drummer at that point? I'd guess they used the actual Linn Drum tracks, with whatever drummer he had playing fills/percussion on top? I dunno though

Exactly my problem with Musicology and 3121. They sound -- too dry? crumbly? Luckily he's still singing like an MF.

He rectified this on Planet Earth, on which "Chelsea Rodgers" and "Lion of Judea" gave me exactly what I wanted from latter-day Prince. Too bad the rest of the album sucked.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 21:49 (fourteen years ago)

I'm one of its seven votes.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 22:11 (fourteen years ago)

what is there to like about this song? idgi

No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 22:12 (fourteen years ago)

It's just light and sweet with a solid melody.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 22:13 (fourteen years ago)

It's totally classic.

I'm A Genius, Too! (Jamie_ATP), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 22:21 (fourteen years ago)

OMG how can you hate The Most Beautiful Girl in the World? that melody...as one critic once quoted, it's like a smoother 90's Al Green. plus I love him doing that little riff in his low voice at the end.

this was the first track I voted to place!

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

Three of mine in that first ten: Black Sweat, Money Don't Matter 2 Night, The Most Beautiful Girl In The World. Cream and Hot Thing were in my 40, so I'm happy.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:25 (fourteen years ago)

It's pretty music. Don't get the hate.

That said, man we're squeezing in a lot of '90s Prince up in here.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

OMG how can you hate The Most Beautiful Girl in the World

really easily...? I find the melody repetitive and the production cloying and goopy, the lyrics stupid beyond belief. "you're the reason god created a girl?" wtf does that even mean.

No Broehner (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

There really are 23 positions in a one-night stand. I counted.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:29 (fourteen years ago)

One of my friends quipped that Prince wrote TMBFITW about himself, and I've never been able to get that interpretation quite out of the back of my mind.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:31 (fourteen years ago)

Uptown and especially Let's Pretend We're Married are way too low...LPWM is like top 3 for me...

monogalomaniacal (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:33 (fourteen years ago)

I do hate the keyboards on TMBGITW.

Eric, I had the same thought.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:35 (fourteen years ago)

I mostly stuck 80s Prince towards the top of my list,w/ a few exceptions

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 23:52 (fourteen years ago)

the Cross at 45 wtf

Someone stick on the SOTT vid when Sheila comes in on that tune, jesus

Master of Treacle, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:08 (fourteen years ago)

i forgot to vote in this, but i hope pop life places well

remy bean, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:14 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah - I hope this poll doesn't end up chock full o' 90's stuff. Not his finest decade IMHO.

I love that SOTT band photo upthread. New desktop!

Vendo Caramelos A Veces Sin Dinero (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:24 (fourteen years ago)

His best band as far as I'm concerned (see "For Those Of U On Valium..." concert boot).

Vendo Caramelos A Veces Sin Dinero (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

I can't believe I missed this poll. I'll be happy if the magisterial "Life Can Be So Nice" cracks the top 20.

broom air, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:31 (fourteen years ago)

voted for "The Cross" and "Uptown" (my only Dirty Mind vote, never been big on that album), glad to see i helped them make the cut.

there's not way this will be 'chock full' of '90s stuff since we've already seen virtually all of the big obvious later hits. my 4 votes for lesser known post-'80s jams were for naught, i guess.

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:34 (fourteen years ago)

xpost I voted for it!

Vendo Caramelos A Veces Sin Dinero (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:36 (fourteen years ago)

i've never really had a high opinion of "Money Don't Matter 2 Night" but i was listening to it the other day and it felt especially true and profound to me in that moment

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:41 (fourteen years ago)

Calling it now: "Every Day Is A Winding Road" at #1

PAJAMARALLS? PAJAMALWAYS! (DJP), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:42 (fourteen years ago)

and "Insensitive" at #2.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:48 (fourteen years ago)

i'm serious you guys, i want to do a funniest and/or worst prince song poll thread after this thing runs its course

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:53 (fourteen years ago)

also possibly a "most WTF song written after 1980 that Prince has covered" poll

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:55 (fourteen years ago)

That poll would be a nonstarter because the obvious winner would be his football song

PAJAMARALLS? PAJAMALWAYS! (DJP), Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:56 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i kept thinking of that as a standout

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

oh i didn't even see 'black sweat' in there. that's one of mine.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Thursday, 28 July 2011 01:47 (fourteen years ago)

"Black Sweat" is really good but it feels a little on the nose as an '00s pick, i went with "Call My Name" because i love gloopy slow jam Prince sometimes

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 01:53 (fourteen years ago)

I came really close to voting for "Beginning Endlessly" from 20 Ten, but didn't love it enough to squeeze it in. It's definitely one of his finest post WB songs, though.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 28 July 2011 02:01 (fourteen years ago)

"Call My Name" was my only '00s track given consideration. Then I looked at all the '80s stuff I'd have had to leave off and said screw that.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 July 2011 03:32 (fourteen years ago)

"The Cross" is the only pick thus far that I just - don't - get.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 28 July 2011 09:07 (fourteen years ago)

haha that video for 'black sweat' is AWESOME

r|t|c, Thursday, 28 July 2011 09:25 (fourteen years ago)

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 10:40 (fourteen years ago)

Black Sweat was my only post-80s choice - the beat is phenomenal. I like the 90s hits mentioned so far but never loved them.

Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Thursday, 28 July 2011 10:49 (fourteen years ago)

Someone help me out here - which 80s alt-rock band does the guitar on The Cross remind me of?

Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Thursday, 28 July 2011 10:53 (fourteen years ago)

no idea -- i always thought Soundgarden should cover it, though

some dude, Thursday, 28 July 2011 10:58 (fourteen years ago)

It actually sounds like a Soundgarden cover already. That early grunge/psych sound. Maybe I was thinking of the Meat Puppets too.

Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Thursday, 28 July 2011 11:03 (fourteen years ago)

You're not going to like this, but it's kind of a precursor to 'Govinda'

Quantum of Pie (NickB), Thursday, 28 July 2011 11:19 (fourteen years ago)

I always thought Eric Weisbard's remark about "The Cross" (it "rocks like eighties Lou Reed") was OTM as hell.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 28 July 2011 11:23 (fourteen years ago)

Listening to it again, it's not that dissimilar to 'All Apologies'.

Quantum of Pie (NickB), Thursday, 28 July 2011 11:48 (fourteen years ago)

Soundgarden + Meat Puppets + 80s Lou Reed + Nirvana + Kula Shaker = The Cross. Solved.

Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Thursday, 28 July 2011 12:01 (fourteen years ago)

would have thought Uptown would place higher, glad i had it at 5 on my ballot to help it squeeze into the top 50

was watching some old Prince bootlegs I have last night and man... has anybody else seen the MTV footage of the Under the Cherry Moon premiere party? holy shit. he doesn't do any songs from the album lol (except for Mutiny) but the band is phenomenal. horn-driven arrangements of Controversy, Raspberry Beret, something called Mutiny (?). I can't find it on youtube, of course.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 July 2011 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

Also, sort of shocked at the low placement of "How Come" here? Guess it's gonna be "Sometimes it Snows" that ranks highest among sleeper ballads.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 July 2011 17:09 (fourteen years ago)

Fuck, these days "Musicology" is a better James Brown homage despite the old-fart lyrics. Used to love "Sexy MF," still like it. Never thought it was particularly sexy. But I love the way Levi Seacer or whomever sings the title - "you sexy muthafeckerr". Over and over and over again.

I really like Sexy MF but I always thought it should be about 2 minutes shorter, the album version is over 5 minutes and starts to drag near the end.

Really enjoying the list so far, not a bad song in sight. I'm Especially happy to see Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad make it, that was in my top 5.

Surprised to see The Glamorous Life so high, I've always liked it but for me that album was all about The Belle Of St Mark.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 28 July 2011 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

RE "She's Always In My Hair" - Seems about right, placement wise. I thought about including this or "17 Days" on my ballot b/c I didn't have any other b-sides, but when I listened to them I decided I just didn't like them enough.

BTW, did anybody else who voted for "The Most Beautiful Girl" specify the album version? Crucial distinction, I think. When I bought The Gold Experience and the song came on I wondered why I liked it so much - it never particularly stuck out to me before, except as one of the first Prince songs I ever heard. A few years ago I heard the original single version and understood - it's pretty thin and unremarkable, at least compared to most of his great ballads. The fuller arrangement on Gold Experience made a huge difference.

Ben D Housing Things (thewufs), Thursday, 28 July 2011 17:56 (fourteen years ago)

also Kitchen Person OTM about Glamorous Life/Belle of St. Mark

Ben D Housing Things (thewufs), Thursday, 28 July 2011 17:57 (fourteen years ago)

Never noticed about the difference in The Most Beautiful versions, I also don't remember liking it when it came out but then I bought the album a few years after and loved it when it came on. I just put that down to my tastes changing, I'll check out the single version as I just listened to The Gold Experience a few days ago.

1 for How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore
1 for Head
1 for Strange Relationship

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Friday, 29 July 2011 17:21 (fourteen years ago)

Shit, I thought "Adore" was gonna be top 10 for sure. My #1. As for ballads, I guess "Do Me, Baby" will probably be top 10, but tbh the song has never totally connected for me. I get that it's great, but for the most part I don't get off on Prince's ballads (pun intended) the same way I do on his funk stuff - except when they're as lush as "The Most Beautiful Girl" or "One Kiss At a Time." The way "Adore" escalates almost breathlessly at the end - what he'll put up with for her ("well, maybe not the ride") is something else. "The Beautiful Ones," on the other hand, is batshit crazy. I can get off on that.

Also RE Eric H. - very nearly voted for "Private Joy", and v glad to see it here. Not high enough, though.

Really glad to see 'Something In The Water' finishing so high...to me it's quintessential Prince...also glad to see that the 'Uptown' mix-up sees it finishing in a higher place and let's 'Private Joy' in...an underated Prince Jam...

The Pastiche Liberation Front (sonnyboy), Friday, 29 July 2011 20:49 (fourteen years ago)

some personal quirks of Prince's that come up in his lyrics that I've been thinking about:

- his sexuality. There are a few coy nods to him being something other than just a hetero-horndog (Controversy's "Am I straight/am I gay"?, Diamonds and Pearl's "would you be a happy boy or girl") but ... well frankly I have a hard time thinking of Prince as actually being bi, was this just some Bowie-style subterfuge or did people really think he was some kind of polymorphous ambisexual? I'm asking more for how he was received/perceived at the time, how this stuff was interpreted.
- his drug use. drug references in his music are both clumsy and odd. did anyone really think he was on smack prior to Lovesexy? there's the coke reference in Pop Life, and given Prince's position in the 80s, the prominence of the drug, and his own behavior it seems like a natural conclusion to think he must have gotten into it... on the other hand he really does seem like a milquetoast that drinks banana daquiris til he's blind. I find a lot of his stuff genuinely psychedelic, and he has some sort of interest in hippies, but it seems like a drug-free psychedelia. he seems too uptight to be into acid or weed. Then later on there's ecstasy, which seems like a more natural fit for his personality (and I recall people theorizing at the time that "squirrel meat" was a reference to E, but um... waht?)

Obviously he's on the straight and narrow now, but his public persona was much more interesting/provocative when there was some ambiguity about these things.

seriously though, i feel like i'm gonna get drunk and listen to "Adore," blubbering to the song "yo adore what they do that for, why they do you like that, what's wrong with them"

some dude, Friday, 29 July 2011 21:52 (fourteen years ago)

from that wendy & lisa interview in out:

That must’ve been a shock after what you’d experienced in the Revolution. How conscious was Prince of assembling for the Revolution that racial and sexuality rainbow you described?
Wendy: He was incredibly conscious of it. Look at the way he looked during Dirty Mind and Controversy and 1999. He was so androgynous. He didn’t care if you were [paraphrasing Prince’s “Uptown” lyric] “black, white, straight, gay, Puerto Rican, just a freakin’.” That guy wanted fans. So anyway he could get them -- and a more interesting way he could do it -- appealed to him. The Sly and the Family Stone mentality, that whole black/white/freaky thing on stage appealed to him.
Lisa: I’ll give you an example. We had a photo shoot for the Purple Rain poster. We were all in our different positions and he at one point walked over to me and Wendy and lifted my arm up and put my hand around Wendy’s waist and said, “There.” And that is the poster. That’s how precise he was about how he wanted the image of the band to be. He wanted it to be way more obvious. We weren’t just the two girls in the band.
Wendy: We were the couple.
Lisa: We were the gay girls in the band. It was very calculated.

...

Did you first think Prince was gay?
Lisa: He was little and kinda prissy and everything. But he’s so not gay.
Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman.
Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.
Wendy: I remember being at that “Sexuality” video shoot and him on stage with that little black jacket and that tie thing around his neck and his black pants with white buttons on the side. And we looked at each other for the first time and I thought, “Oh, I could so fall in love with that girl easy.” It doesn’t matter what sexuality, gender you are. You’re in the room with him and he gives you that look and you’re like, “Okay, I’m done. It’s over.” He’s Casanova. He’s Valentino.

Richard Nixon's Field of Warmth (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 29 July 2011 21:56 (fourteen years ago)

Then later on there's ecstasy, which seems like a more natural fit for his personality (and I recall people theorizing at the time that "squirrel meat" was a reference to E, but um... waht?)

i remember reading that the line in "pop life" was supposedly a pointed reference/diss of some ex-bandmate of mpls musician who had a coke problem at the time. also there's a lot of rumors/mythology about a bad experience with ecstasy inspiring him to scrap the black album and make lovesexy.

I'm a little confused about all the love for Adore. It's a good song, but in the kingdom of SOTT sexy ballads, Slow Love remains king.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:15 (fourteen years ago)

i like "Slow Love" more than most and almost voted for it but surely you realize what a minority opinion that is. "Adore" is Prince's #1 quiet storm radio staple.

I'm distinctly in the Adore-is-just-good camp and proud of it, especially when I've got "Lady Cabdriver," "Strange Relationship," "Do Me, Baby," and "The Beautiful Ones," among countless others, on my side.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:54 (fourteen years ago)

my favorie "adore" related story is someone -- matos, i think -- telling me about a ne-yo concert they saw circa 2006/2007. he covered "adore" as an encore. he apparently got to the climax, built and built to the final vocal/high-note freakout, and then cut everything dead. "nah, not even gonna try that." and then picked up immediately, brought it home.

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:54 (fourteen years ago)

OK, I was traveling and didn't submit my entry, but here's what it would have been. Note that I haven't really followed Prince closely since about 1996—I got off the bus with Emancipation, really. I should give those recent discs a few more spins. I excluded stuff written but not produced by Prince, otherwise "Manic Monday" would certainly be in my top five.

I'm with this. "Adore" has always been a great ballad, but never been on endless rotation for me. I get being totally whacked out on those first four songs, but "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night" is a total "you had to be there" cut.

Who's my other "Sign" first place vote? *hi-five!*

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 August 2011 13:34 (fourteen years ago)

April is too low. Perfect end to my favourite Prince album. I like that his other great ballad, The Beautiful Ones, is so wracked and raging and this is vulnerable yet stoic. This poll reminds me how incredible his range was at his peak.

Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Monday, 1 August 2011 13:40 (fourteen years ago)

Great start to the list today. I think April is his best vocal.

Sign deserves to be this high, I think because that album is so great and there's so many other amazing tracks later on I sometimes forget just how good it is as an opening track.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 1 August 2011 14:22 (fourteen years ago)

Who's my other "Sign" first place vote? *hi-five!*

*hi-fives back* We're on the same page quite a lot, I'm noticing.

Sign O The Times deserves a lot better imo - the faithful don't seem to rate it much, but it's all-time for me.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 1 August 2011 14:28 (fourteen years ago)

A great sound, great vocal, great guitar fills. A good opener. It's nowhere near my top twenty though.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 August 2011 14:29 (fourteen years ago)

It was between "Sign" and "Pop Life" for me, but I ended up dropping "Pop Life" further down my ballot assuming it was sure to place and giving a boost to other songs which may not have made it w/o my help. Hope that decision doesn't backfire on me.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 August 2011 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

xpost Kinda dud lyrics, tho.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Monday, 1 August 2011 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, the lyrics are pretty dire but the sound blew me away at the time. If I was voting aged 13 this would be top 5.

Now he's doing horse (DL), Monday, 1 August 2011 14:41 (fourteen years ago)

Then again, my #1 boasts the couplet: "The beautiful ones always smash the picture / Always, every time."

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Monday, 1 August 2011 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

Ha, mine too. The Sign O' the Times drug lyric really reminds me of when Marvel comics like Daredevil started doing anti-drug message storylines where some kid would have one reefer and then do PCP and jump off a building because he thought he could fly and Daredevil, after taking out the dealer, would sadly shake his head and make some speech about the youth of America.

Now he's doing horse (DL), Monday, 1 August 2011 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

I think "Sign O' The Times" has a great lyric, even the drug part. The AIDS reference meant a lot to me at the time for personal reasons.

My big regret in my ballot is not voting for "Sometimes It Snows In April", but as I said above, Parade has never really stuck with me until now.

Euler, Monday, 1 August 2011 14:56 (fourteen years ago)

The SOTT lyric was an arresting and apt bulletin for its time, but I don't think it was composed with posterity in mind. What persists, though, is the sound of the track; I marked down a lot of the big hits when voting as they still felt played out, but SOTT very nearly made my 20.

I know this is self-evident, but looking at this and the Beatles poll as they relate to my own ballots, they reinforce for me the idea that the more you love an artist's work, the less you'll be in line with everyone else's perception of that work. I love the Beatles, and my ballot wasn't even close to the final results; I'm a casual Prince fan, and my ballot is very much in line with the final results.

I'm not crazy about "Alphabet Street" but it's never exactly set radio programmers on fire, which means it's basically an underrated Prince single.

I've decided that you can pinpoint Prince's decline by the changes in his facial hair - once he got rid of the mustach/goatee combo, things started to go downhill. clean-shaven Prince is a terrible look imho

Richard Nixon's Field of Warmth (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 1 August 2011 21:53 (fourteen years ago)

it's not like the 5 o'clock shadow era in the early '90s was better than the era with less facial hair that preceded it

I want you all to play very close attention to his costume and hair on Rave U2 the Fantastic's cover. "Fatigues" is right.

yeah, been a fan for years but never really went deep into his/their catalog before and this has made me begin with that and i've been LOVING every damn minute. u got the look & lady cab driver are the only ones i voted for that made the list so far. guess i can rule out "sister" (my no. 1 or 2 iirc) placing since "when you were mine" hasn't surfaced yet, eh

Marquis de Sade (outdoor_miner), Monday, 1 August 2011 23:57 (fourteen years ago)

y'know what? i concede that i simply don't get Dirty Mind as an album like other people do, but i really really don't think "Dirty Mind" is a great song, really not top 20 material. my only consolation is that "Controversy" is destined for the top 10.

some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

I enjoy it as an album track: that slow, steady synth throb.

The Edge of Gloryhole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 00:27 (fourteen years ago)

some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 01:38 (fourteen years ago)

I think loving one and not the other is a little odd. Sometimes I want to hear one more than other, but I agree with Soto that "Dirty Mind" has a pretty great, warm, throbbing pulse.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:33 (fourteen years ago)

"Controversy" is so present and so hooky, "Dirty Mind" is a little slip of a song by comparison

some dude, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:36 (fourteen years ago)

"Dirty Mind" is a little more "Minneapolis sound" too, I think, so I'm biased.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 02:38 (fourteen years ago)

I also admire how Matt Fink plays with the speed at which he plays the synth hook.

Trufact from one of the criminally out of touch -- when I first started listening to Prince back catalogue stuff for this ballot, I played "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and my first thought was "wait, this is Prince?! I remember this from high school." I thought I'd never heard anything by him from before Controversy.

wd rather "When You Were Mine" wins over "Doves" tbh.

(Despite always thinking that song was kinda overrated.)

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

kinda surprised at the Never Take the Place of Your Man placing... I like the song and it's one of his best hooks but man, the middle really drags

^^^ without Prince's solos the song goes nowhere. I hear the song as a gesture of irony. He could never take the place of her man? No? Even with these singing and guitar skills?

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 16:37 (fourteen years ago)

i had no idea so many people loved 'when u were mine' that much (i do, but i think it was in the middle of my ballot).

'when doves cry' may be overplayed, but it's got everything. also, maybe there isn't a proper tonal bassline, but there IS bass on that tune - that descending eighth note lick that sounds like it came from a drum machine.

Uh xp - not much of a fan compared to u heads I guess.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

I'm the most predictable part-time Prince fan alive:

1. "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" (shorter 45 version)
2. "Mountains"
3. "Nothing Compares 2 U" (Sinead O'Connor)
4. "Raspberry Beret"
5. "Erotic City"
6. "When You Were Mine" (Prince)
7. "The Glamorous Life" (Sheila E)
8. "U Got the Look"
9. "When You Were Mine" (Cyndi Lauper)
10. "Alphabet St."

I'd also completely forgotten about Chaka Khan's "I Feel for You," otherwise I would have dropped the duplicate "When You Were Mine" and been 10 for 10.

Here's mine

20. Crazy You
I know it goes against percieved wisdom but I adore the first album...pure anadulterated Prince...the sound of someone being let loose in the candy store...this is just lovely
19. Leaving For New York
Only discovered this fairly recently...a home demo from '76...Prince on the piano playing his little heart out...again it has essence of Prince all over it
18. Future Baby Mama
The only track I chose post 1987...think cos it contains that quirky major/minor Prince sequence and cos it sounds like something from 87!!
17. In Love
First proper track on first album...a bit corny I know but still brill
16. Tambourine
Weird funk groove...great drumming...off the hook vocals...Prince in a nutshell
15. Bambi
Prince goes metal and decides to turn a lesbian straight...now that's the kinda therapy I'm talkin about!!
14. Private Joy
Pure Minneapolis pop/funk...impossible not to shake your booty to this
13. Soft And Wet
First single I believe...love the story about Prince telling Warners that Maurice White would not be producing his album...He would!!
12. 17 Days
Prince's b-sides trumped most other artists entire catalogues...this is just extraordinary...
11. When You Were Mine
One of Prince's purist pop moments...but with so much soul
10 .Raspberry Beret
Wonder what the Warner execs thought when they heard ATWIAD...they must of been a lot of relief in the room when they this
9. Little Red Corvette
Sexy, sly and funky this track never gets tired...a track everyone can agree is genius
8. When Doves Cry
Heard this on the radio recently for the first time in ages and it slayed me like the first time I heard it...immense
7. I Wanna Be Your Lover
Michael had Don't Stop...Prince had this...Real men sing in Falsetto...if you don't dance to this you don't dance...
6. 1999
I remember hearing this for the first time as an 11 year old kid...Probably the most seminal musical moment of
my life...things would never be the same again
5.Kiss
Can't think of many greater 3 minutes in pop than this...pure perfection
4. Uptown
Black,White,Puerto Rican everyone just a-freakin...this is tight as fuck
3. Something In The Water(Does Not Compute)
Dark and Weird as you like...Prince as Norman Bates...They Don't make em like this no more
2. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker
Can't think of another artist that could produce something as fucked up as this...thank god for Prince..
1. Condition Of The Heart
The track that defines the word Fey...there are'nt the words to describe my love for this...the most gorgeous sublime track ever recorded...

Iago Galdston, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 02:30 (fourteen years ago)

Guess I'm not that hardcore of a Prince freak - my ballot was mostly hits or well-known album tracks. I do have almost all of his albums, but I probably listen to The Hits/The B-Sides more than any of them 'cept maybe Dirty Mind. I think it does more to establish his genius and listens better than any of his regular studio albums. Even after about a decade as a fan, I'm still getting my head around Sign of the Times though several of its tracks made my ballot. That might actually have something to do with the fact that's it's one of the worst-mastered CDs I've ever heard. Should probably just spring for the vinyl, but I need to get a record player first.

My picks:

1) Adore
2) Head
3) 1999
4) The Beautiful Ones
5) U Got the Look
6) 777-9311 (The Time)
7) The Most Beautiful Girl In The World (Album version)
8) Controversy
9) When U Were Mine
10) Dirty Mind
11) Kiss
12) I Wanna Be Your Lover
13) New Position
14) When Doves Cry
15) Let's Go Crazy
16) Pop Life
17) Little Red Corvette
18) The Ballad of Dorothy Parker
19) It
20) Uptown

Probably would have swapped "Starfish & Coffee" for "Ballad of Dorothy Parker" on second thought, and was going back and forth about "DMSR". Might not have even voted for "When You Were Mine" at all if I coulda known it would top our poll - I mean it's great, but it's not that great. Oh well - such surprises are what these polls are for.

Knee-jerking in the laziest and least interesting way possible from what I can see. Prince is pretty much back-to-front indie credible from what I can see.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 3 August 2011 10:18 (fourteen years ago)

Parade got stiffed. Love every song on that record.

When You Were Mine is great and all but it feels more like a cool new-wave one-off than essence-of-Prince. An odd number one. Fun poll though.

i'll say it again...cos he hasn't released a truly decent album in nearly 25 years he really is in danger of being forgotten as possibly the greatest musician of the last fifty years...that 78-88 period is unbelevable...as well as all the singles, albums and b sides there's all the stuff that was unrealeased and given away to other artists...I still cant get my head round how he did it and toured excessively at the same time and made films and slept ate and...well maybe he didnt do a poo for 15 years...thats maybe why he got a little kranky...

correct! chaos is the record that completed his contract with warner bros. and is basically stuff from the vault

prince made come and gold experience at the same time (they contain basically every song in glam slam ulysses between the two of them) and wanted them released simultaneously but warner bros. wasn't having that

When You Were Mine is a great song. Probably in my top 30 or so. Not my favourite on that album though.

I still can't really work out the commercial drop off from PR onwards up to about Batman, esp. in the US. 14 million (now 20 and counting) for PR, to what, 2 or 3 million for ATWIAD and Parade (as of 2011) and what, a couple mil for SOTT and about 1 million for Lovesexy in the US? He was having top 10 hits, a massive iconic 'name', part of the 'big three' etc etc. Just too much material in too short a time? Moving on when the last album was gaining momentum? If there were no records between PR and SOTT, would the latter have sold at least 10 million? People say that the hugeness of PR was in fact the anomaly, but why? It's Prince for goodness sake. Everyone knew him.

Master of Treacle, Thursday, 4 August 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Springsteen never surpassed the success of their single disc diamond-certified albums either!

livin in my own private Biden hole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 4 August 2011 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

I was one of I'm sure millions of teenage Purple Rain fans who listened to a friend's copy of ATWIAD and was disappointed: That kind of break in momentum is hard to come back from. And you can't underestimate the shifts in taste toward hip hop that left Prince looking out of touch even as he was making brilliant music: Steve Perry broke down the racial and sexual politics of it well at the time, but it was more than that--Prince was just not at the center of musical innovation by '88, though I remember buying The Black Album and Nation of Millions at the same time.

Batman and Around the World in a Day both went double platinum, by the way. What's strange to me is that Sign 'O' the Times "only" went platinum, despite spawning three top 10 hits and having massive critical approval. Probably just a case of too much product in a relatively short period of time, or maybe a higher price tag as it was a double album. From ATWIAD through what I'll call Love Symbol in 1992, though, his only real flops were Lovesexy and Graffiti Bridge, though each spawned a top 10 single. I don't think the real dropoff occurred until the mid-90s - Prince sold a lot of records after Purple Rain, but those sales were spread out over a bunch of minor hit albums rather than a small handful of blockbusters.

Melle Mel and the Coconuts (thewufs), Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

+ it's a double album, so it's sort of like it didn't even go platinum at all

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

Pretty sure it was certified before the RIAA started counting double albums twice. So it sold (or shipped) at least a million copies. Just checked the RIAA website, actually - yup, it actually went platinum a few months after it was released in 1987.

Melle Mel and the Coconuts (thewufs), Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

Sales often measure buyers' reactions to the previous album: I can't imagine Lovesexy being released as a single track on CD endeared him to anyone.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:48 (fourteen years ago)

Actually, Lovesexy came after SOTT, in 1988. The follow-up to Lovesexy was Batman, his biggest seller in years.

Melle Mel and the Coconuts (thewufs), Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:55 (fourteen years ago)

Not sure how many actually bought Lovesexy on CD, as opposed to vinyl c. '88.

third-generation stripper (Eric H.), Thursday, 4 August 2011 17:57 (fourteen years ago)

I know SOTT didn't follow Lovesexy, and I'm theorizing off the cuff more generally about sales--I guess Batman might prove that idea wrong, but it's a cumulative thing, inevitably not very provable. Either way, Batman never struck me as a Prince revival.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 4 August 2011 18:06 (fourteen years ago)

And you're right about the CD thing, to me it just registered as one more pointless barrier to Prince love.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 4 August 2011 18:08 (fourteen years ago)

I read in a Billboard published late '87 or early '88 which praised SOTT for being a "sleeper hit" because it remained on the charts longer than ATWIAD and Parade and boasted three top ten singles. I thought, "Wow! How things have changed since 1984."

livin in my own private Biden hole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 4 August 2011 18:28 (fourteen years ago)

I get the sense that, in comparison to Madonna or Michael or Bruce, Prince was just too eccentric for a lot of people, and that might be a big part of the reason he's sold fewer records than his superstar peers (of course Michael was eccentric, but in a distinctly pop, pan-humanist sort of way). Since I was born in late '82 and barely aware of his importance until about 1994, I can't really verify this firsthand - but I know that as a kid Madonna and MJ were on my cultural radar long before Prince, and I would be surprised if my experience was entirely atypical.

Melle Mel and the Coconuts (thewufs), Thursday, 4 August 2011 18:42 (fourteen years ago)

What's more, Prince cultivates the rarefied air of a vanguard artist, whereas Michael and Madonna (almost) always shot for the pop universal, even when they courted controversy/scorn/ridicule. Prince has certainly continued to make something out of his own mystique, but after Purple Rain he never made such a conscious effort to build or maintain his celebrity, excepting the Musicology comeback in 2004.

Melle Mel and the Coconuts (thewufs), Thursday, 4 August 2011 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

livin in my own private Biden hole (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 4 August 2011 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

That was an obvious pop move, but was it accompanied by a media blitz approaching those for, say, Like a Prayer or Dangerous? That's not a rhetorical question, by the way - my only exposure to Prince at the time was Batman, whereas Madonna and Michael were already pretty familiar by 1991.

Melle Mel and the Coconuts (thewufs), Thursday, 4 August 2011 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

i dont think we are likely to ever see a media blitz that approaches purple rain, but thats because it was a self-contained one. i mean dangerous and like a prayer didnt have $80 million grossing films promoting them so

I dream of vodka sandwich (jjjusten), Thursday, 4 August 2011 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think we can think about batman as just another album in the arc of prince's career -- it was an integral part of a massive marketing juggernaut. i bought it because it was a "batman" album, not because it was a prince album -- and i imagine many others did the same. so the sales of that album are sort of anomalous in terms of prince's post-PR career.

to change the subject somewhat, one thing i find really weird and kind of sad is that because of the unusual distribution prince arranges for his new records these days (he makes/packages an album, then contracts with a major to distribute it, making no long-term deals) and because of paisley park's general flakiness, some of prince's most popular recent albums are already out of print. that doesn't mean you can't buy them for $0.50 on amazon or whatever, but they aren't going to be in the targets and best buys of this world. more than ever i guess prince--even more than most artists--seems to view albums as teasers for his renumerative tours.

Aside from (very) current major releases and proven catalogue sellers (which for Prince includes only Purple Rain, maybe 1999, and a couple best-ofs), the Targets and Best Buys of this world don't stock a lot of CDs by anybody, so the fact that Prince's new releases are disappearing from their shelves is really no great loss. Anybody who cares already knows what to do.

there aren't really that many great ones. i have to admit i'm not a big fan of the madhouse LPs even though they are fun in small doses. the key ones i think are the vanity 6 LP, mazarati's "100 MPH," andre cymone's "A.C." LP (which is not all prince, but it's still quite good), sheena easton's "sugar walls," the family LP, the time LPs, and the sheila e. LPs (which are spotty IMO).

Prince is definitely one of those "got off the bus" artists.

It's not that he stopped making decent albums, it's more that after a while, you could conceivably have enough Prince that you need no more.

I remember getting that first newspaper freebie, and smiling at "My Guitar", but feeling that I still didn't vitally need more. Got (but never played) the later newspaper freebie.

Got off the bus at "Diamonds and Pearls", but did got the "get off" and "cream" extended eps.

one month passes...

there seems to have been some kind of consensus at the time that Lovesexy was a major jump-the-shark moment...? I find this perplexing. Various ex-band members (Bobby Z, Wendy & Lisa, etc.) obviously had a stake in writing him off after they were fired so their comments should be taken with a grain of salt. otoh it was his least successful album since 1982, two of the three singles didn't even chart, and my memory is that critical reception was not all that positive (have a vague memory of Robert Hilburn's Time review). But in retrospect it seems very much a piece of his other peak 80s material - it seems like a logical progression from previous work, and the production/songwriting/performances are all consistently high. It's an album where the quality material outweighs the bad - it's subsequent albums where that split seems to tilt the other way imho.

off to listen to the symbol album & Diamonds and Pearls, both of which I don't remember liking at all outside of their singles.

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 9 September 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

well I'm sure having the entire album as a single track didn't help distinguish the songs from one another. but I hear hooks even where there's minimal structure. could've used Bob George on it tho lol

you will always be wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 September 2011 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

but ugh three tracks in to the symbol album and already all this terrible rapping + sampling is just SO MUCH WORSE

you will always be wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 September 2011 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

Cat is a better rapper than whoever in god's name he gets in the band on the symbol record.

Lovesexy is inferior to the Black Album (I saw the tour when he did the two together and it was awesome), and the Black Album does have its weak moments. But Alphabet Street is great--if it's an inferior version of "Kiss," it's a superior version of "Cream." And it does have some other nice moments. I've always loved the break in the title track when the whole band sings "This feeling's so good in every single way!" Also "I Wish U Heaven" is a great one. For me I would not say that the shark gets jumped here, but it's in neighboring waters.

You could also point out that this is the point where the 12" mixes start to nose dive.

I was listening to Lovesexy earlier this week and kind of marveling that the ILM 'biggest quality drop off from album to album' thread doesn't mention this from Sign O The Times once. "I Wish U Heaven" is the only song I really like (and even that I tend to imagine being done better as covered by someone else), "Dance On" is just barely almost cool but not quite, and "Alphabet St." is easily my least favorite of his 80s singles. this is really the point where his choice in drum machine sounds started to get ghastly, too.

there was a quote at the end of the Per Nilson book from Bobby Z about how he felt Prince basically lost interest in songwriting, which seems very apparent to me on this 90s stuff (and to a lesser extent Lovesexy and Batman). it's like he cranked out so much material and got used to such endless jamming he became unable or unwilling to focus on the nuts and bolts of how good songs are structured, how to edit things down. he just didn't care. even Get Off, for example, is really aimless. there's the drumloop and the one guitar/flute riff, but that's it - the rest is just various odds and ends thrown on top (some shitty rapping, oh here's a James Brown sample, the "let a woman be a woman and a man be a man" diva warble, etc) with no rhyme or reason. and that's one of his BETTER songs from the era.

you will always be wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 September 2011 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

in the past he was able to make that approach work because of the quality and inventiveness of the sounds he would draw on - songs that were super minimal and basic still worked because of the sonic details. but by the 90s he was following other people's shitty sonic choices, and it just sounds bad...

you will always be wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 September 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

some dude otm.

I suppose on some conceptual level Lovesexy isnt as distasteful as Love Symbol, but damn if the latter doesn't boast more songs I care about (besides boasting more songs, period, which is why it gets a bum rap).

As far as Prince's excellent to great nineties albums, The Gold Experience and Emancipation have stronger ideas and sounds than Lovesexy or even ATWIAD.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Friday, 9 September 2011 17:14 (fourteen years ago)

yeah one of Lovesexy's virtues is that it's one of the last times he had to fit an album onto one vinyl LP, but once his consistency rate went way down and arguably none of his albums were front-to-back classics anymore, the longer albums at least offer more buffet options for playlists and mixes

Tal Bachman - Highness advocate (some dude), Friday, 9 September 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

it just bums me out how even the songs that would otherwise be fine (Willing and Able, for ex.) or at least moderately enjoyable on Diamonds and Pearls songs are literally ruined by the rapping. it's the audio equivalent of a chef preparing a dessert for you and then, upon hearing that you are fond of chocolate pudding, serves you a lump of shit. and then complains when you say you don't like it.

When was the last time Prince directly collaborated with an already pedigreed artist whose pedigree wasn't directly tied to Prince himself? I think his egomaniacal need to find new talent and sleep with them if they're female would keep him from working with known non-facepalm rappers.

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Friday, 9 September 2011 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i mean he's worked with a few heroes and predecessors, but aside from Mavis Staples it was usually just little one-off things, and very little stuff with anyone you'd consider a contemporary or peer (or near-misses like walking out on the MJ collaboration). i think that's as much about him being a control freak as an egomaniac, though, he doesn't want to show up and be part of a duet or ensemble for a song he didn't even write.

Tal Bachman - Highness advocate (some dude), Friday, 9 September 2011 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

how do Larry Graham and Doug E. Fresh fit in here

you will always be wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 September 2011 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

or Maceo Parker

you will always be wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 September 2011 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

larry graham and maceo parker are definitely heroes that he came up listening to

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Friday, 9 September 2011 18:33 (fourteen years ago)

yeah - that was more in response to dan than some dude

you will always be wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 September 2011 18:36 (fourteen years ago)

some dude's OTM tho about Prince restricting himself to situations where he's firmly in control. and limiting himself to one-offs. he's not a collaborative guy, really.

you will always be wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 September 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)

yeah Wendy & Lisa might be the only really really extensive truly collaborative relationship he's had

Tal Bachman - Highness advocate (some dude), Friday, 9 September 2011 18:38 (fourteen years ago)

lol I didn't even know about Doug E. Fresh, some Prince fan I am

Maceo and Larry are givens but those collaborations happened several years after Diamonds and Pearls (and actually, same with Doug E Fresh now that I look it up), plus with Larry at least I don't know how much of that was tied to the conversion to being a Jehovah's Witness.

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Friday, 9 September 2011 18:42 (fourteen years ago)

I think with Larry the music collab came first, then the conversion...?

you will always be wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 September 2011 18:52 (fourteen years ago)

yeah Wendy & Lisa might be the only really really extensive truly collaborative relationship he's had

this also very OTM from everything I've read

you will always be wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 September 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

Maceo and Larry are givens but those collaborations happened several years after Diamonds and Pearls

if we're talking pre-D&P yeah he wasn't interested in collaborating with anybody he didn't have control over

he did kick MJ's ass at ping pong tho

welcome to ILX, Brad!

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:04 (fourteen years ago)

i think i said in the voting thread that i started listening to come because of all the prince action on ilx, and that record rules too, glad everyone can agree

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:06 (fourteen years ago)

shakey's whole revive post outlined how little the world at large thinks of Lovesexy, don't act like it's just people here

some dude, Friday, 9 September 2011 20:06 (fourteen years ago)

the world at large aren't music fanatics who pour over the minutiae of an artist's catalog, so yeah it's true that the most people don't think very much about Lovesexy

everyone who does should love it, tho, because it owns

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

i love it because i found a jukebox at a shitty college bar that would do the whole album for one play. i've always meant to pop back in and just ruin everyone's selections for an hour.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

you may recall that this thread is the result of music fanatics pouring over the minutiae of Prince's catalog and deciding that the single was the only thing from Lovesexy worth holding up as one of his 50 best songs.

some dude, Friday, 9 September 2011 20:17 (fourteen years ago)

lol 'pore over' i repeated your typo, now i really don't want to get any mental images of pouring anything over Prince's anything

some dude, Friday, 9 September 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

re: collaborations, I totally forgot about this:

In 1989, Prince appeared on Madonna's studio album Like a Prayer, co-writing and singing the duet "Love Song" and playing electric guitar (uncredited) on the songs "Like a Prayer", "Keep It Together", and "Act of Contrition".

you will always be wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago)

WAHT prince plays guitar on "like a prayer"!?!?

some dude, Friday, 9 September 2011 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't even notice that typo

I'd be more embarrassed had I not read that Zelda review, I don't think anything I am capable of writing could be as embarrassing as that

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

also I didn't know that re: Like A Prayer, wau

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

well it is wikipedia so I dunno, grain of salt

you will always be wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

No, it sounds right. That guitar tone sounds an awful lot like his.

there are references to Madonna confirming this in an interview floating around the internet, but I can't find the original source

you will always be wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 September 2011 20:44 (fourteen years ago)

read a lot of the prince books and none of them mention that...?

Crackle Box, Friday, 9 September 2011 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

i found a convo on prince.org that makes it sound like Prince played on a remix of "Like A Prayer" but not the album version and also has an unreleased cover of it

some dude, Friday, 9 September 2011 20:46 (fourteen years ago)

If you want to hear Prince on the song Like A Prayer... you need to get ahold of the "Remixed Prayers" CD. The 12" Club Version has him on Keyboards & Guitar, and the 12" Extended Mix has him on Guitar, including the solo that they edited out of the LP Version. Act of Contrition is mainly made up of backwards parts of the Club Version. There is also a promo mix out there called "Dub Beats" which has instrumentation from Prince, and a sample from Bob George.

Yes, Madonna herself mentions it in Paul Zollo's book of songwriter interviews.

Anyone curious what 61-100 are? Was there a link that I missed? I'm wondering if there's anything since 1995 besides "Guitar," "Black Sweat" and "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" that made the top 100.

Dorothy Parker is a funny song... it doesn't have anything to do with the actual Dorothy Parker, did he just like the sound of her name or something?

I guess so - it's full of peculiar, slightly puzzling details like that - lyric's such a good fit for the wobbly, dreamy sound.

His Royal Blecchness (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 23 April 2016 22:52 (nine years ago)

my hypothesis is that the waitress has been nicknamed dorothy parker - most likely by Prince, but perhaps by another patron of the place on the promenade - because she makes sharp/witty remarks to the customers, ie she's a real dorothy parker.

Controversy used to be my favorite Prince album and Dirty Mind a close second. I'm not sure anymore.

The Ballad of Dorothy Parker is currently my favorite Prince song. I can't remember if I voted in this poll but I absolutely love the results of this poll.
