If I only want to vote for around 20 albums, do I get more points total if I go with unranked only? How does it work, exactly?

It's pretty much the same as with johnny fever's 50s poll except its 100 albums instead of 50 maximum.

Ranking albums helps stop ties. but you can rank some and leave the rest unranked if you wish.
i.e. Rank your top 20 but if there's another 30 albums you like not as much as those 20 then make that part of the ballot unranked.
to use coltrane or miles as an example you might have 2 particular favourite albums of each in your top 20 but dont want to leave out the others so you can put them in the unranked part.

Remember the more you all vote for the more interesting the results will be.

Hey all, sorry I'm not around much at the moment (I'm in China for work until next week).

A back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests:

- If you submit an unranked ballot, every album gets 101 points
- If you submit a ranked ballot, your top album gets 200 points, your 2nd gets 198 and so on right down to 2 points for your 100th (if you had one)
- If you submit a split ballot, the n albums in the top part score as for a ranked ballot, the bottom scores (101-n) points for each album (I think)

In no situation is the number of points given to the albums on your ballot affected by adding more albums below them. There's a breakeven point about halfway - if you only want to vote for say 20 albums then you should submit a ranked ballot as they'll all get more than 101 points.

No idea what is in the lead. Wont know anything until seandalai tallies up at the end so no idea what will win or be in the final results (still to decide on how many, but you know what i like..) but its gonna be good. Lots of albums voted for for sure.

Hi Some dude, that's very cool of you! I think it all depends on what size of countdown we do. And that all depends on how many votes we get (we have had quite a few full 100 vote lists so far).
I would imagine that the roll out will be Mon 29th - Thursday, possibly Mon-Friday (all depending on seandalai not having work issues stopping him from tallying up).
im sure we can work something out between us.

i just voted. i really just started getting into jazz this year (Rolling 2011 thread where I buy and listen to jazz albums for the first time ever), so ended up voting for every album i've heard and liked so far. didn't hit 100... maybe 75 or so, i didn't count... came up with a top 10, rest are unranked.

a ranked top 10 or 20 and the rest unranked seems the way to go if you ask me if you find it daunting to rank a lot of albums. But if you've only heard 100 albums or less don't feel bad voting for them all, the more the merrier! Same goes for voting for a lot of albums by one artist, plenty are doing that and filling up their 100.

I think I've hit on a really good way to do a ballot.
I (try to) pick my fave album by each artist then rank in order of favourite. Then I will fill up what is left of the ballot with albums by those artists and have that part unranked.

And i've voted. Top 50 Ranked another 50 unranked.

Been on vacation and neglecting my duties to vote in this poll. Am now changing my strategy from listening to the entire playlist, incomplete though it may be, from beginning to end to an approach of touching base with old favorite albums and artists and checking out stuff I don't really know that I've been curious about.

As the first title in a projected series of boxed sets Sony/Legacy introduces MILES DAVIS QUINTET - Live In Europe 1967 - The Bootleg Series Vol.1 featuring Miles Davis Second Great Quintet featuring WAYNE SHORTER, HERBIE HANCOCK, RON CARTER and TONY WILLIAMS -- arguably the single greatest small group ensemble in jazz history.

The recordings from their 1967 European tour are some of the only existing documentation of the band performing compositions from the extraordinary series of studio albums they made between 1965-1967 -- E.S.P., Miles Smiles, Sorcerer and Nefertiti. Almost everyone here is a jazz dilettante - it's not like Pavement where you can listen to 5 albums and consider yourself an expert. I went through the nominations list and counted the albums that I had heard, could remember hearing and could remember liking; I got to 34.

well, i'm much more interested in "jazz" as an, um, spectrum than i am in pavement. but i was certainly a lot better equipped to qualify my thoughts on pavement's output through voting than i would be about post-1945 jazz, having heard close to 100% of pavement's songs.

having said that, i'm working on a list for this jazz poll now.

Having a list of nominations means I can automatically identify incorrect/alternate spellings on ballots, otherwise I'd have to check everything manually.

Also makes it much easier to make a list from rather than relying on memory!

I voted for 5 Alice Coltrane albums and had no qualms about it, as they are all among my favourite albums of all time.

As for stanning for albums, if you haven't already heard it, you should check out Björk's jazz LP (Björk Guðmundsdóttir & Tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar – Gling-Gló). It's a delightful record, and she comes off as a spirited jazz singer, too bad she hasn't anything like it ever since.

ive seen mingus davis coltrane hancock etc get lots of multiple votes , and as tuomas says, if they're among your top 100 faves, then nothing wrong with that. Imagine only voting for 1 coltrane or davis hancock or mingus? im possible! Same goes with the lesser known artists too. So do not worry shakey about listing all the sun ra or whatever you like. I AM ENCOURAGING IT. If you like it, vote for it.

Will almost certainly do a roll out of more than 100 anyway so the more you vote for the more interesting the lower half will be, and also a larger results list also means 20 miles or coltrane albums in a poll wont overshadow anything.

p-funk seems like they would get a good turnout imo

In the end, I just didn't feel that I had heard enough of the albums that it would be fair for me to vote. (Plus, many of my favourites were missing since I didn't participate in the nomination process.:P) I can't get Spotify in Canada either. I'll follow the results and probably use them as a guide to check out many new albums, as I do with the metal polls.

Ha ha, yeah, should've paid more attention I guess. I'm a jazz dilettante so in a way probably best that I missed it. Hoping that 'On the Corner', 'The Koln Concert', 'Black Woman' and 'Live at Fillmore West' do well.

I did think it was kind of hilarious/awesome that Song X and Zero Tolerance for Silence were the only two Metheny albums on the list.
