Daft Punk Live-Seriously this time.....

I started a thread asking about it before, however I've now had this album for about 6 months and it is a fucking masterpiece. EVERYTHING about it is perfect. The version of Da Funk is amazing, so jacking compared to the original, and then the rest of the show is just evil funky techno disco house. There's no one way to describe it, in places almost military style beats, and in other places this really red hot grinding back and forth funk, amazing drums with really odd programming all the way through. This is absolute genius, it really is.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 6 September 2002 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I keep seeing it in Sales (HMV, Virgin) for a fiver. I should get it.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

ronan is there crowd noise?

Josh (Josh), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes there is. That's another thing actually, there's crowd noise and also the manner in which it's recorded is really deep and bassy, giving you the authentic feel of a nightlub in your own living room.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 6 September 2002 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan is OTM. Crowd noise is there. The way Da Funk is merged into the amazing Armand Van Helden remix of the same track is genius. Those added drum-rolls to Alive are also pretty clever.

Omar, Friday, 6 September 2002 12:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan - I've probably mentioned this before (several times, I'm sure), but you really want to hear 'DaftPunk and DJSneak Live in Ibiza' - it ranks alongside DJHell@FUSE, Avalanches in Ibiza and Jeff Mills (aka the Wizard, or Live@Liquid Rooms) as one of my favourite sets.

nick.K (nick.K), Friday, 6 September 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll try and get my bro to download it or something, my downloading speed is shit and my speakers are too. Sounds good though.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 6 September 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i have to agree here,i think homework is really really good and like what i've heard off discovery, buy the live cd is infinitely better...also,as mentioned above, the crowd noise doesn't seem to interfere, its at just the right level...funny you should mention this now,i listened to it for the first time in ages the other day,i lent it to someone and didn't see for months...

robin (robin), Friday, 6 September 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not surprised!

At a slight tangent, have you heard "So Much Love To Give", the new Falcon & Bangalter one? It's absolutely incredible, superficially it takes a simple loop and vocal and just keeps on repeating it, but it is so uplifting. How do they do it?

Mike (mratford), Friday, 6 September 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Heard about it, but not heard it, Falcon is amazing, his remix of Cassius-La Mouche is one of my alltime favourite tracks. I really need to hear this.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 6 September 2002 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

sounds just like what they did with 'Together' but i'm always up for anything involving Mr Bangalter....only just found out he has scored the controversial new French film (it has a gratuitous 8 minute rape scene) 'Irreversible'...no breakdancing robot grooves in this one i figure

blueski, Friday, 6 September 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

This is probably where I should also plug the Crydamoure collection "Waves" - Crydamoure being the label that all the Falcon/Bangalter tracks are released on - which has some absolutely *amazing tracks. Search: the ragga/electro/house fusion of Deelat's "Wet Indiez" and the holy righteousness + disco string mayhem of The Eternals' "Wrath Of Zeus" (fabulous title for a house track or what?)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 6 September 2002 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Crydamoure is actually Guy-Manuel's label, Roule being Bangalter's. "Wrath of Zeus" is indeed recommendable, especially for its spoken opening/string mayhem (as you say). I wish I had the 12".

If there's a new Bangalter/Falcon single out there, I must have it - is it on vinyl yet?

Captain Sleep, Saturday, 7 September 2002 07:45 (twenty-three years ago)

yes! i love that waves album! me and my sister were dancing to the wrath of zeus in my room all day today...

both of the deelat tracks are really, really fresh - i've heard a third awesome deelat track in a felix da housecat set too... who is this deelat, anybody know?

i also love the really sweet sentimental tracks on waves like le knight club's 'cherie d'amour' and archigram's 'in flight (raw club mix)'

minna (minna), Saturday, 7 September 2002 12:09 (twenty-three years ago)

heard "so much love to give", that vocal over-and-over-and-over, makes "together" sound like "bohemian rhapsody". not sure whether it's c or d. is there a possibility that they were, you know, taking the piss?

michael w., Monday, 9 September 2002 09:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Deelat is one of Guy-Manuel's sideprojects, but I'm not sure who else is involved. An absolutely fantastic idea though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 9 September 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

"At a slight tangent, have you heard "So Much Love To Give", the new Falcon & Bangalter one? It's absolutely incredible, superficially it takes a simple loop and vocal and just keeps on repeating it, but it is so uplifting. How do they do it?"

How indeed? I like "Together" - quite a lot - but this feels like "Together" to the power of 10. I love it.

Again, does anyone know about a vinyl release date...? It must be mine utterly...

Captain Sleep (Captain Sleep), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...

They showed some of their London set tonight on Channel 4 just now, looked awesome. Camera showing several people in the crowd mouthing the hook to 'Da Funk' v funny.

blueski, Sunday, 17 June 2007 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

that was basically the best live show i've ever seen, even if i have my doubts that it was, you know, properly live. if it wasn't for the half-nude photo kenan just posted of himself on the wdyll thread, i'd still be on a pretty massive high.

^@^, Sunday, 17 June 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

anyone going to the brooklyn show?

nervous, Sunday, 17 June 2007 02:13 (eighteen years ago)

I've heard the buzz was kind of harshed by it being basically broad daylight for a lot of it, but everything I heard eventually came down to "amazing".

Matt DC, Sunday, 17 June 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)

several people in the crowd mouthing the hook to 'Da Funk'

come on everybody does this, right?

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 17 June 2007 02:28 (eighteen years ago)

hm i decided in the end not to go to the berkeley show. $73.50 for a ticket? come on, it can't be THAT good.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 17 June 2007 03:59 (eighteen years ago)

Unfortunately, the show here is on a Sunday night, thus conflicting with work.

The Reverend, Sunday, 17 June 2007 04:30 (eighteen years ago)

my brother bought tickets to the brooklyn show, but decided to sell them for some reason.

funny farm, Sunday, 17 June 2007 05:26 (eighteen years ago)

i was thinking about going to the brooklyn show but i doubt it'll be worth it

rather spend $20 on a good dj and be able to do drugs

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Sunday, 17 June 2007 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

daylight must have sucked!

walking into the bercy on thursday night just after they started was one of the most awe-inspiring moments of my life.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1406/556895761_08bacb8e6b.jpg?v=0

this doesn't really capture it at all, but standing above the sea of camera phones (much cooler than lighters) was, well, incredible.

toby, Sunday, 17 June 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

I've heard the buzz was kind of harshed by it being basically broad daylight for a lot of it, but everything I heard eventually came down to "amazing".

yeah, if I had any complaint at all it would be that a little too much of their set was in daylight, but by the encore ("one more time" for the second time) it was pretty much completely dark anyway.

^@^, Sunday, 17 June 2007 12:38 (eighteen years ago)

i'm getting goosebumps from re-watching the videos i took. youtube links to come.

^@^, Sunday, 17 June 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

this thread is like a kick in the nuts to those of us that want to go and DON'T have tickets.

Spinspin Sugah, Sunday, 17 June 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

They were really amazing live at Bercy. Toby otm about the mobile phones being awesome. Also, their costumes turning into red lines at the end was really incredible and very cool.

Jibe, Sunday, 17 June 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

CAN... NOT... WAIT... TILL... AUGUST

s1ocki, Sunday, 17 June 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

by the encore ("one more time" for the second time)

did they play a mix of human after all/together? that was one of my favourite bits at the bercy (assuming i'm not misremembering, of course).

Also, their costumes turning into red lines at the end was really incredible and very cool.

totally. i really hope they release a dvd at some point.

toby, Sunday, 17 June 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

A DVD would indeed be very fine. The red costumes and the part where there was no more music and the chimes from Aerodynamic started made me go crazy. As did Da funk and just about everything else i guess. Toby, you wouldnt happen to be an irish dude who gave me some whisky ( i think) to drink during the concert? :D

Jibe, Sunday, 17 June 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

Toby, you wouldnt happen to be an irish dude who gave me some whisky ( i think) to drink during the concert? :D

ha, no!

toby, Sunday, 17 June 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

astonishingly good last night. fantastically upbeat scally-free crowd too.

pisces, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

so, is it worth braving the lollapalooza crowd to see daft punk (plus lcd soundsystem, electric six, and blonde redhead) for 80 bucks?

^@^, Monday, 18 June 2007 06:11 (eighteen years ago)

DVD of this is U + K, they made everything else at Wireless look like a bag of puke.

LCD just seemed like they couldn't quite be bothered cos Murphy couldn't get enough vocals.

Michael Philip Philip Philip philip Annoyman, Monday, 18 June 2007 09:08 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not hugely into these guys, but i did see this on TV (the O2 wireless festival, hosted by the cockfarmer from popworld) and thought it was massive - nice good proper marriage of acid and house

Tracer Hand, Monday, 18 June 2007 09:49 (eighteen years ago)

It was nice to see A Zane realise he probably wasn't going to get the better of J Murphy and revert to grovelling mode.

Michael Philip Philip Philip philip Annoyman, Monday, 18 June 2007 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

see if it had been Alexia Chung interviewing she would've made it a much more convincing joke to assume Murphy was from LA.

blueski, Monday, 18 June 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)

Just to add my voices the wireless festival praise - twas superb!

Robin G, Monday, 18 June 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

a guy I know met them after "rock ness" and they couldn't understand him and his girlfriend was talking to one of their mums

saw them at pukkelpop, last year. it was great despite it being the end of a long weekend and a bit of a crush

RJG, Monday, 18 June 2007 10:15 (eighteen years ago)

micheal = otm about lcd. really half-arsed.

pisces, Monday, 18 June 2007 11:05 (eighteen years ago)

james murphy is just a crap vocalist. it's too bad because the band is great, egging each other on - it would be great if they had a singer who could egg everyone on, too. instead murphy seems to try to go for some kind of ill-advised ian astbury impersonation interspersed with fey indie asides, very little of which seems to have anything to do with the music being played behind him.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 18 June 2007 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

I think If I was any other band on the bill that day I'd just give up. Daft Punk were on a different planet.

bidfurd, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

their costumes turning into red lines at the end

Roll on, Coney Island. I apologize to anyone near me in the crowd that day if I shit myself.

Jon Lewis, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

They were amazing last year. I won't get to see them this year unfortunately.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 10:32 (eighteen years ago)

they're playing Coney? oh man

blueski, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

vahid, i bought tix for the berkeley show for 50$. i bought them at the campus, probably to miss the service charges (i forget why now, was a while ago)

jaxon, Friday, 22 June 2007 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

good work, son. you still got mine?

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 22 June 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)

vahid (or anyone else), i bought two for july 27th but it turns out i'm in new jersey all summer, is $65 each fair? still pretty expensive for daft punk i know, but ebay sez 86 bucks (plus $15 shipping!) is the lowest and it'd be nice to recoup that shipping/service charge crap ticketmaster pulls, if anyone's interested

blueski, Friday, 22 June 2007 10:37 (eighteen years ago)

I saw them on Sunday in Leeds.

The best lighting i have seen - ever. The whole show was fantastic. In parts it was phenomenal, particularly the encore of human after all/one more time/music sounds better with you.

My official take is that anyone who bought tickets for the Seattle show should find a way up to Seattle... cuz it's gonna be totally awesome!

altair nouveau, Friday, 20 July 2007 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

Quite simply the most entertaining thing I have ever experienced.

hmmm...

spencer are you positive?

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

100% Some elements and sections were the same (1st half at least). There are also new effects and the whole encore is new.

I should say 100% positive. I rarely post anything I'm not positive about.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

yeah there was a lot of similar stuff the coachella set, but this one was like a half-hour longer.

max, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 01:47 (eighteen years ago)

it was alot of the same samples and stuff of course. i dont think any two sets are going to be exactly the same. they are mixin on the fly.

Saw them in Berlin a few weeks ago doing the same set. Lights around stadium in pix here look much better. We had way too much ambient light unfortunately. Cracking set, it was great looking up at stage and seeing them pump fists in the air. The masks and suit thing was incredible, so much better than last year! They also appear to be Jay Z fans as they were doing the pyramid hands thing at the end...

Anyone going to the Seattle show on Sunday or going to the aftershow?

I've put my name down for the free guestlist for the aftershow, but I feel pretty silly going to a club by myself. I'm even spending an extra night in Seattle because of this show (originally I was supposed to leave early monday morning)

Jill, Friday, 27 July 2007 06:10 (eighteen years ago)

I am waaaaay kicking myself over this. I can't even get some scalped tickets and skip work, because I'm in hot water over my chronic tardiness. Is Daft Punk worth getting fired over? I think it may be.

how much are the tickets to these shows? i'm contemplating buying a 1-day ticket for lollapalooza, mostly just to see daft punk, and i wondered how that price compares to their solo shows.

stingy, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

it's $50 here (but i paid a little more because i lagged on tix).

Steve Shasta, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

what do you think - $80 for daft punk, lcd soundsystem, m.i.a., the rapture, blonde redhead, satellite party, etc

stingy, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

Face value in LA was $65, but they were going for 125-150 on craigslist and then up to 200 outside the venue.

Spencer Chow, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

damn! i guess $80 isn't too bad then. it just feels like a lot of money though. i'm not even a huge fan, but i've gotten the impression that this is something you don't want to miss.

stingy, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, I'm leaving for Seattle... NOW!

Clay, Friday, 27 July 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone going to the Seattle show on Sunday or going to the aftershow?

i was going to say "what after show?" but then i used this web site called www.google.com and I found this:
http://static.going.com/thumbnails/329/wh524_1500_a0c2045297b0478cd7435f23dceeb641.jpeg

i'm going to the daft punk show, but i don't know about the aftershow. i have to be at work at 6 am the next day :(

t0dd swiss, Saturday, 28 July 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

easily the best show i've ever seen. the BART ride back was no joke. there was only a 3 car train and enough people to pack 9 cars. i got so squished i started to have a claustrophobic panic attack and had to get off the train. took 2 hrs to get home :( sorry shasta

anyone go to either of the after parties? walked by asiasf on the way home, but it looked kinda lame and mighty was a bit too far to walk to right then. oh well.

jaxon, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

i didn't go to the after parties.

i have to say that it was one of the best shows i've ever seen, too. the venue was perfect.

a group finally makes good on STADIUM HOUSE.

i kept trying to tell a friend that they were one-upping kraftwerk in just about every way conceivable, but he was having none of it.

tricky, Saturday, 28 July 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

no joke! the way nearly every element in the music was represented in the light show was just too fucking cool for words, i kept expecting to wake up from the best dream ever

And back from Seattle. While I will readily admit that I have not lived a "full" or "good" life, thus making the bar a little low, that show was easily one of the greatest things that I have ever, ever seen. The people who get to see this show are some of the luckiest people in the world. WOW was basically all I could come up with afterwards.

The interview in the latest (or possibly last month's, bookstores around here are kind of apathetic getting magazines in stock on time) Fader confirms that yes, they are filming these shows and plan to release a DVD. Yay!

I noticed that, Steve! I drop that same loop into my ableton sets occasionally. I was really hoping they'd pull out the whole song to end it. NOT THAT I AM COMPLAINING JESUS CHRIST.

I saw them at the Greek and it was amazing. Stupefying.

Afterwards I felt as though ten fuses in my brain were blown. I had friends asking me "how was it?" and I couldn't explain it.

Now they just need to make another great album. The songs from Human After All were great in concert, much, much better than the album experience.

that's awesome that you got to see it from outside the fence, deej. we showed up right at the end of satellite party and made it to probably 25 people back from the front of the stage. it was pretty freakin crowded by the end of the set, as i guess more people tried to push into that area. it was great being so close though, even if you could only really bob your head at that point. also big ups to todd for the rides after the show.

I would like to further add to the (very unanimous - for a reason) opinion that Daft Punk is a live experience (I was at the Toronto show) that one rarely is able to find. It was truly an experience, and very much a spectacle rather than a concert, and that's just alright by me. And yes, heh, I was able to see the real Thomas Bangalter too.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 07:53 (eighteen years ago)

Coney show was pretty much the highlight of my year…

I had a job in the '90s where I could pretty much go to any show in NYC I wanted to for free, and I ended up, as it was the Chems/Prodigy/Fatboy "dance music is taking over" era, going to a lot of those kind of shows. So, apart from the fact that Discovery is one of my favorite rekkids evah, Thursday night reminded me of how much I missed dance to music that I really like at really loud volumes…

and many of the people there, I suspect, were very much on board for the "dance music is taking over" era, or maybe they were aging ravers… a lot of the energy was similar to any kind of nostalgia-based, good ole days kind of rock show…

"The Billboard article also let us in on a little secret: those dudes in Kanye's "Stronger" video aren't, as previously reported, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, but, rather, the actors from Electroma. Not quite "two bums in helmets," but still, tricky."

Maybe they're at home or in the audience during "their" shows too.

chaki, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 03:10 (eighteen years ago)

"Why tour when you don't have to?"

Assuming it was them two, it's possible that they, like many if not most musicians, find it gratifiying to perform their music in front of thousands of people that have been/are gagging for it…

Veronica Moser, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 11:50 (eighteen years ago)

Judging from the amount of gear that's actually inside the pyramid, I think TB and GMdHC are pretty much required to be in those suits to work it. I mean, there seems to be a considerable amount of live mixing happening in there.

Jon Lewis, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah it said in the Fader that the other 2 dudes appear at things that Bangalter and Homem Christo want Daft Punk to be at, but aren't able to for some reason. I assume this wouldn't include DP concerts.

mizzell, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

^^^y'know what, I agree with that.

Part of me wished i was in the center bleacher at COney instead of on the field.

Jon Lewis, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

they were certainly on tour even if they don't go on stage; they were seen out of costume at some local clubs around the time of lollapalooza

deej, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

The bad thing about being in the stands at Coney was the big empty space between us and the people on the field. Kind of killed some of the energy. But the views were amazing and people were really into it and dancing and stuff.

mizzell, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

I gotta get the hang of this occupying 2 different positions at the same time thing. Would've been awesome at Boadrum too.

Pythagoras to thread.

Jon Lewis, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

I know people who are pretty well connected who say "it's not them in the suits", etc etc. I think those people are WRONG. For one thing it's probably much easier to just have it be Thomas and Guy in the suits.

chaki, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

It doesn't really matter to me either way, but they're quite good at "live mixing" with tables, but that's not what they're really doing in the Pyramid:

http://assets4.pitchforkmedia.com/images/image/35353.insidedaftpunk.jpg?

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

whoops, not sure why I reposted that. meant to post this part from pitchfork:

1. ABLETON
"The show revolves around Ableton Live software on custom made super-computers, which we remotely access and control with Behringer BCR2000 midi controllers."

2. SCREENS
"Next to the ethernet remote computer screens there are four Minimoog Voyagers, the classic analog synthesizers. They're a 30-year old design."

3. MOOGS
"We can mix, shuffle, trigger loops, filter, distort samples, EQ in and out, transpose or destroy and deconstruct synth lines. We keep some surprises on the side too!"

4. VISUALS
"There's a direct connection between our rig and the lights and visuals of the show. The light and video engineers can also add or control layers during the show."

5. SYNTHS
"Inside the pyramid are synthesizers and remote controls connected to the rest of the music equipment and computers, which are in rack-mounted towers off stage."

6. TEAMWORK
"Working the music equipment, lighting and video equipment, and building the pyramid for each show takes around 10 people, including both of us."

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

Jon Lewis, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

At Daft Punk my brother half jokingly made a comment about "they probably just got their friends to tour for them" which was followed by a laugh combined with an uneasy moment of pondering. However, it's somewhat reassuring that I did see Thomas Bangalter in person that night. Why he would fly to Toronto to go to a shitty after-party, but not perform would make all the less sense. I saw no Guy though, hmmmmn.

That and with tickets around $60 and around 4-5 thousand people attending theres serious money to be made.

mehlt, Thursday, 16 August 2007 02:02 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i saw em here and it was one of the 10-12 best experiences of my life which is why im even considering

max, Friday, 24 August 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

One thing I'm thinking is that the Vegas show won't be as good because the lighting can't be topped from the Sports Arena, plus all the trappings of Vegas might cheapen it? Not sure.

Spencer Chow, Friday, 24 August 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

its never as good as your first time, i guess.

max, Friday, 24 August 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

but ive also never been to vegas.

also: HALLOWEEN

max, Friday, 24 August 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

So I'm thinking really really seriously about going to this. The lineup for Saturday is pretty awesome! MIA! The Stooges even! And Daft Punk! And Las Vegas and Halloween! It'd be a spendy trip but I mean jesus it seems so very worth it.

Clay, Saturday, 25 August 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)

I have to say I saw Daft Punk at Coachella as well, and the second time was just as good.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 25 August 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

the lighting can't be topped from the Sports Arena, plus all the trappings of Vegas might cheapen it? Not sure.

the stadium is a bit outside of town, at least. i saw a lollapalooza there once and the place could really work for Daft Punk.

I want to go.

jergïns, Thursday, 30 August 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

i could kick myself for missing the tickets pre-sale today. ARGH.

I might make it over for this! Tho Muscles + Bang Gang = DO NOT WANT.

bought my tickets for saturday vegoose!

max, Saturday, 8 September 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

So want to go still.

Clay, Saturday, 8 September 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

yeah. considering it pretty seriously

jergïns, Saturday, 8 September 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)

Muscles + Bang Gang = DO NOT WANT.

The show starts at 2pm, hopefully Muscles and Van She will be on at 2:45 and 2:15, hours before anyone bothers turning up. Bang Gang will presumably be DJing between all the real bands. Cut Copy + Presets + Sebastian & Kavinsky + Daft Punk is good enough to outweigh the other two!

energy flash gordon, Sunday, 9 September 2007 06:17 (eighteen years ago)

i will come up if we can convince gaz. can we convince gaz???

haitch, Sunday, 9 September 2007 07:28 (eighteen years ago)

i am thinking about this.

gr8080, Sunday, 9 September 2007 08:43 (eighteen years ago)

Bang Gang DJs are GREAT! Light Sound Dance is one of the mixes of the year and "Around the World Again" is awesome! Van She are great too, "Kelly" is very pretty.

Spencer Chow, Sunday, 9 September 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

Have you seen Van She live? I have twice, and while the recorded Kelly is indeed pretty, they need to get a lot more interesting before I'll go to a stadium show early to catch them.

(I bet we can't convince Gaz. I have extra tickets though.)

energy flash gordon, Sunday, 9 September 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

Haven't seen them live (not sure they've played the US), but honestly, having seen Daft Punk, I really don't care to see any more live shows by anyone else!

Alive 2007 is, and I'm not exaggerating, ridiculously fantastic. You know that perfect sounding audience recording of that great Coachella gig that's been on the net everywhere? I've listened to that hundreds of times because it's so good. But I don't think I'm ever going to listen to it again, because Alive 2007 is lightyears better. It's like the bestest DJ set ever, and it's all their own material too! I'm tellin' ya, this is just ridiculously great.

StanM, Saturday, 17 November 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

After being underwhelmed by the mp3s that had been floating around, I picked up the 2 disc import and am listening on headphones and am absolutely BLOWN AWAY. Really surprised and am wondering if the leak was even real or was a really bad encoding. I'm hearing all sorts of things and the crowd noise is perfect now.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

Also, the encore on the bonus disc is AWESOME - slamming!

Spencer Chow, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, there were several lousy rips out there at first and I stand by my initial enthousiasm :-)

StanM, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

I also bought the 2-disc version, and yes, it's fucking great. Best live album of at least 2007, if not the last several years.

stephen, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

OK, I've just confirmed that the first mp3s I heard listed as Alive 2007 are not the same recording as on the CD.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 01:04 (eighteen years ago)

It's not even the same show.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 01:10 (eighteen years ago)

The coachella show from 2006 was being passed around as Alive 2007 for quite awhile. The actual release is !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clay, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

Totally, this is such a relief! Actually, the "Alive 2007" leak that I had wasn't anywhere near as good as the Coachella recording.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

Where are you people getting the 2-disc version? I can't find anyone with it in stock, not even my Amazon preorder.

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 03:40 (eighteen years ago)

AHA (I AM INTERNET DETECTIVE)

If you are, like me, in the States, can't find the 2-disc version, and don't mind giving your email address (or a quickly setup Hotmail or whatever) to Satan, Wal-Mart of all people have it in their online store.

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

I picked up the only copy I saw at Amoeba Hollywood on Sunday night.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 09:05 (eighteen years ago)

melbourne-ites, how many of you are going on friday? ALL my friends bailed on me, so I'm going on my own. Fuck missing daft punk.

Roz, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

I found my copy of the 2-disc version at the local Border's, it was their only copy though.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

how's the book and the fotos in the 2disc-er?

pisces, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

I officially give up trying to look for the double CD version in local Belgian stores and am going to order it abroad now.

Virgin, either let us know it's limited edition or don't make a double CD version at all, if you don't like selling it.

StanM, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, exactly- I was this close to full-blown panic mode when I realized Amazon wouldn't be able to honor a preorder I placed months ago and every other reputable shop in the goddamn world was sold out less than a week after the album's release. Or at least release the entire contents of the album in the non-limited format and confine the fanciness to the packaging.

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

I was assuming that "limited" meant "music industry limited" ie "not limited in any way whatsoever," finding out they meant it was a bit of a shock...

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

I just ordered it at amazon.fr where they did have it in stock. (.co.uk didn't)

StanM, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

how's the book and the fotos in the 2disc-er?

Honestly? Nothing too special. Nice, sold packaging... but the book is just a whole bunch of photos. No additional test or information, just tour photos. Nice tour photos, but really nothing you'll do more than flip through once.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

test = text

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

If you're just looking for the music and can skip out on the fancy packaging iTunes is selling the whole thing for only about $11, I think. And it's in the iTunes+ format, too.

Clay, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

Amazon has it for 8.99.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

woo... i thought i'd missed 1-2 songs of the set, but it turns out all i missed was the extended vocal intro and came in right when the music kicked in. sounds good.

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 04:03 (eighteen years ago)

...on the thursday night.

haitch, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 05:47 (eighteen years ago)

god that was good. the encore!!

haitch, Thursday, 13 December 2007 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

The Brisbane schedule is a little weird. The gig runs from 4:30pm until 10:30pm (so you can tuck the kids in?) and then afterwards most of the lineup is djing around the corner.

Still, quite excited.

Popture, Thursday, 13 December 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

Finally, finally found a hard copy of the limited version and honestly, I kind of wish I hadn't. The music is wonderful, the encore is sublime, and the photos are nice; too bad they skimped on the part of the packaging that actually holds the damn discs. It's those supertight paper sleeves that are impossible to extricate CDs from without scuffing and scratching them all to hell. So out they come, ripped to .WAV for safekeeping, make my mp3s, and I will never remove them again because doing so will only damage them further. It's like if the first Durutti Column LP had the sandpaper on the inside.

Telephone thing, Thursday, 13 December 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

im real happy with the live album

finally an official release...maybe we can see it on some critics list and give this tour even more crediility

Spencer Chow, Monday, 17 December 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

i got the 1-disc version tonight. is this qualitatively much different from a creatively-mixed "greatest hits" comp? maybe crowd noise doesn't really do it much for me ... or the crowd is just mixed much lower than in "alive 97"?

they do an ill job on "steam machine" though. that keyboard line! sounds like fred falke's been giving lessons ...

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 05:17 (eighteen years ago)

apparently there is a 1-disc version out there with the encore? is it worth it spending the $$$ for 10 minutes + a video, though?

also apparently there's a japanese version that includes the bearbricks ...

Nah, they had a good run, but completely understand this.

A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 22 February 2021 14:54 (five years ago)

Weird, it's been almost 7 years since the last album, who knows how long since the last tour, they only appear anonymously. We've been conditioned not to even expect more music/performances from them. Why even formally announce a break up?

Anyway, they should tour as holograms.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 22 February 2021 14:54 (five years ago)

they could waited till 2/22/22 at least

eisimpleir (crüt), Monday, 22 February 2021 14:59 (five years ago)

It’s been almost eight years since the album and over 13 since the tour, which everyone knows either because they went, or because the band helpfully put the year in the title of each of their live albums

nxd, Monday, 22 February 2021 15:31 (five years ago)

Why even formally announce a break up?

especially as seeing this bumped and their trending on Twitter just gave me at least three seconds of "NEW ALBUM?" / "THEY"RE DEAD?!" panic

nashwan, Monday, 22 February 2021 15:32 (five years ago)

I mean, I'm guessing they formally announced it so people would quit asking them? I don't know why this is so weird to some folks, I'm guessing they were taking their usual slow pace and didn't know what their future was to be, but have since figured it was a good time to call it. I'd rather have an official announcement than just leave it in limbo.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 22 February 2021 15:48 (five years ago)

I didn't give it a good listen back in the day - the two biggest singles were all I really listened to again - but someone posted the Grammy AOY acceptance and it's kind of WTF moment for anyone unfamiliar with the album. Like, cool, there's Nile Rodgers, but is that Paul Williams of the Muppet Movie fame? Was this his album?

frogbs, Monday, 22 February 2021 20:00 (five years ago)

there are a million articles from the time of the break up and the time of the reunion that frame what happened as a "break up" or the band quitting, including quotes from murphy using those words

na (NA), Monday, 22 February 2021 20:10 (five years ago)

bottom line is that sending out a press release saying your band is breaking up does a few things and not much else:
1) - Stops journalists from asking if you're still in that band (but not if you're getting back together)
2) - Trigger clauses in your extant contracts that require you to pay back X cash and/or walk away
3) - Provides free publicity and allows you to play even larger venues for longer runs when you reform

seeing as DP didn't really need any of those concerns satisfied afaik, i'm unsure what the point of breaking up is?

lcd soundsystem are playing madison square garden on april 2nd, and it will be our last show ever. we are retiring from the game. gettin' out. movin' on. but for just one more night, we will be playing with friends and family for nearly 3 hours -- playing stuff we've never played before and going out with a bang. and we'd like you to be there.

if you would, we'd love it if people all came in white. or black. or black and white. and come ready to have fun, please. and come early, as the festivities will be opened by our favorites, liquid liquid. yes: liquid liquid.

Just seems so weird to get pissed off about it, especially when you don't see the same anger for, say, a sculptor or an author returning with something new after saying they were going to retire. Like to make my customary DP comment on ILM that I find it exceedingly odd that they never recorded a song in which a female voice is foregrounded…I believe that this is true at least vis-a-vis the studio record canon, not w/r/t mixes or when they DJed which I know nothing of…like, the music that was most fecund for them is house and disco, not at all redoubts for "no girls allowed" shit, quite the opposite… like they would have rather put Julian Goddamn Casablancas or Panda Bear instead of any notable woman singer… but they never did…

I went to the Coney Island show in '07, and it was one of the best nights of music in my life…

My understanding is that most of the tracks were already lined up in Ableton, synced up with some sequenced parts fed into analog synths, and most of what they did onstage involved mixing all that and twiddling knobs (filtering + stutter effects). So it wasn't simply hitting play on a backing track and miming along but it was still pretty railroaded.

Here was the 2011 LCD post announcing its breakup:

I totally misremembered that the five Terminal 5 shows got added, and then added to, after MSG got scalped (with tickets going for $11,000!), not the other way around. But still, yeah he said that they'd record and play live on a small scale only in New York, then over six years later decided to tour again after all. People change their minds about things sometimes! Especially when the circumstances around which they made a statement changed mere days after they made it, six years earlier.

i’m sure this {ed: adding the smaller shows} will wind someone up somewhere (“but i paid $600 for one seat at MSG!!!) or seem like some shitty “plan” to someone else (“they were gonna do it all along!!! it’s all a big retirement money plan to bilk the fans!!!”) or something else that someone who theoretically likes our band thinks (why are you trying to buy a ticket?? how could you even listen to a band that you think is capable of some of this shit!??)

Anyway Daft Punk's last tour was the best live performance ever by humans or robots, and that debuted as a Coachella headline. It's hard to imagine any way in which "retiring" 13 years later in the middle of a pandemic, and "unretiring" fifteen years after the tour when people can go to festivals again is going to help them get a better gig.

afaik, but I didn't know Guy-Man had done Weeknd stuff without Bangalter

he co-wrote & produced one track on My Dear Melancholy along with Gesaffelstein. what i didn't know is that he co-wrote & produced Kavinsky's "Nightcall"!

neither has been that prolific with solo collaborations really, they've both done about the same amount

had a couple of co-writes on the Tellier album he produced too

Bangalter has done solo stuff (and a little more writing?) as well as other collabs, was my idle half-thought. but it turns out the video is taken directly from the end of Electroma, so no runes to scry either way.

Digging to catch up on the bits they've done since Parcels (in 2017):

Thomas produced and co-wrote Supercherie (2018, kinda Get Lucky-lite) and produced, co-wrote, played synth and sang on L'autre Paradis (2019) for -M-.
Guy-Man wrote the music, co-wrote the lyrics and produced Rest by Charlotte Gainsbourg (2017, mixed by the other bloke from Le Knight Club), and Hurt You (2018) is that Weeknd song with Gesaffelstein.

I kind of wonder if the continuity they’ve had since the large-scale festival and arena shows that’s followed through to appearing in the helmets in a variety of tv performances and collaborations has kind of boxed-in the brand. The between-album shifts and minor reinventions are a little trickier to pull off when you’re yoked to the robot helmet shtick?

Random Access was the biggest style shift of all, played with real humans in contrast to the robot helmet schtick. Probably would have been time for a major helmet redesign if they made another record, or just go full anonymous - the helmets were a very minor part of the image when they debuted for Discovery, given the Interstella 5555 videos.

The Helmets were actually designed for the Discovery era. Interstella 5555 doesn’t feature them much since the idea for the anime was developed with TOEI in the early stages of Discovery and the helmets came after, developed by Alterian. At one point the helmet designs even had hair.

Here’s a short interview with helmet creator Tony Gardner, where you can see the hair design and explaining the process:
