Nominations for Best Album By An Artist Who Only Released One Album poll

all genres. accepting nominations for however long, until we have a decent selection of serious candidates together. hoping to limit nominations to "no, really, this album is truly great" rather than "really good album" - I suspect there are tens of thousands of bands who had a decent album in them, made it & then moved on.

I'm starting this thread to say how phenomenal an album Break Through by the Slickers is, which is one of two nominations I'll make. Amazing, all-time, track after track. Black Ark at full strength.

^ think you're missing the idea here

ban this sick stunt (anagram), Thursday, 11 August 2011 14:48 (fourteen years ago)

So, this is for:

"The La's"
"The Avalanches - Since I left you"

etc?

Mark G, Thursday, 11 August 2011 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

first thing that comes to mind is Never Mind the Bollocks. has to go in there but I suspect we need a ruling that posthumous collections of odds and sods do not exclude an album which was released in the artist's lifetime

ban this sick stunt (anagram), Thursday, 11 August 2011 14:51 (fourteen years ago)

Propaganda - A secret wish

I dunno, I'm trying to think of one I love, as opposed to ones that'd qualify (but I know would do well in the eventual poll)

Mark G, Thursday, 11 August 2011 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

"Artist Lifetime" would mean Jeff Buckley "Grace"..

Mark G, Thursday, 11 August 2011 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

see they had a remix album as well and also another album 1234

xp

Revolution 9, You Might As Well Live

and yes, this album is truly great (although I think I'm the only person who has ever heard it)

baby huey & the babysitters, the baby huey story

sbgorf (stevie), Thursday, 11 August 2011 14:56 (fourteen years ago)

Should there be some way of ruling out newer artists who have only released one album? Like only including artists that are inactive/deceasd/broken up or haven't released a follow up in over 5 years? And what about side projects/supergroups?

Anyways I nominate:
The Exploding Hearts - Guitar Romantic
Propellerheads - Decksandrumsandrockandroll

Thunderclap Newman, Hollywood Dream

L.P. Hovercraft (WmC), Thursday, 11 August 2011 17:22 (fourteen years ago)

it doesn't matter why they only released one, it only matters that they only released one. Stockholm Monsters Alma Mater is my other nom. A singles comp came out 20 years later, that ok. I personally am disincline to accept the Modern Lovers because while the first one may be best, it's not like "Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers" is a completely different deal - nom'ing that seems like sneaking something in on a technicality to my mind

The United States of America - S/T

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 11 August 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

I wonder if we can include acts that released one album and then nothing for 30 or 40 years when they attempted some kind of comeback (thinking Simon Finn, T2, Vashti Bunyan, etc.)

Linda Perhacs- Parallelograms
Mayo Thompson- Corky's Debt to His Father
Derek & the Dominoes- Layla
Blind Faith

President Keyes, Thursday, 11 August 2011 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

Brie Larson - Finally Out of P.E.

Super Villains With Drum Machines (MintIce), Thursday, 11 August 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

can they also have released singles/eps?

I'm operating under the assumption that singles/eps don't disqualify, as long as they only have one regular, full-length, non-compilation studio album

I'm operating under the assumption that singles/eps don't disqualify, as long as they only have one regular, full-length, non-compilation studio album

^^^ otm. The idea is "one album, which rules, no other albums." Singles comps do not d/q. EPs do not d/q. Any other full-length album by other permutations of the band does d/q.

there's hardly any rap which seems weird to me so I'm gonna bump the B-side of Queen Mother Rage's Vainglorious Law right now to see if it qualifies as well as I'd remember it - it's like a great lost X-clan album, sonically - fuck I love this record

also I'm asking the mods to auto-ban anybody who votes for the New Radicals

can i get a ruling on Fotheringay then?

Amazon editorial review:

2008 release of the long lost sophomore album from one of the great might-have-beens of British music. They lasted less than a year, and released just one album, but their disappearance robbed the early-'70s scene of a group of musicians capable of taking Folk-Rock to new heights of subtlety and musicianship. Sadly they broke up during the recording sessions for their second album. Incredibly all the tapes survived in various record company archives. 38 years later the surviving members of the group have mixed all the material to finally complete this remarkable album.

What about various combos of artists who did one album together? Like Eno & Cale, or Reed & Cale, or the Stills-Young band?

no. the idea is not to get as many names as possible. it's to poll albums by unique artistic entities who never recorded an album again. otherwise there's a trillion jazz combos that were never technically the same thing again, the Byrds probably'd qualify, etc etc.

Christgau:

The Wild Tchoupitoulas [Island, 1976]
Here we have eight songs about dressing up in Indian costume on Mardi Gras; many of them are also about fighting with other Indians. You've probably heard the New Orleans nonsense patois before, and maybe the irresistible melodic elements, too, although I can't tell any more, because I've played this "repetitive" record so many times it sounds like where they all started (which it may be). For a while, I believed side two inferior, but eventually a longing for "Big Chief Got a Golden Crown" set in and now I prefer it for listening. Side one is the best non- (or anti-) disco dance music in years--it had folks who'd never heard it before shouting "Indians here they come" at a thirtieth birthday party. Allen Toussaint produced, the Meters played, and mighty kootie fiyo. A

Good call with the Herion! I was thinking of adding Antioch Arrow to this list, but they released two full-lengths didn't they?

Anyway, Exploding Hearts will probably be forever my best and only answer to this question. I played the album in the car during a drive out to my parents a few weeks ago, forgetting that my wife had never heard the whole thing, and she fell instantly in love with it and we ended up playing it like 6 times in a row.

would also suggest checking out the worst case scenario record, which is justin from unwound doing really intense touch & go style hardcore, except i can't find a copy of it anygoddamnwhere now.

I'm not sure Chris Bell qualifies - he released only a 45 during his lifetime, (a classic - I Am The Cosmos b/w You And Your Sister), but the album wasn't released until about 15 years after he died, and I'm not convinced this was ever intended to be released as an album any more so than, say, "My Sweetheart, the Drunk" and thus fails the posthumous odds-and-sods exception.

Lee626, Friday, 12 August 2011 10:23 (fourteen years ago)

90% of those I thought of are already present and accounted for... here are some others that should be....

Armageddon s/t - ex-Yardbirds' vocalist's last record. Makes it kinda ironic that Keith Relf left the Yardies in large part because he wanted to persue softer, folkier music styles.

Roger Nichols & the Small Circle of Friends - s/t - In 1966, lyricist Tony Asher took a couple of breaks from his day job at an advertising agency to help write lyrics for two pop albums. One of those was Pet Sounds. This was the other.

One Dove - Morning Dove White - Has a cult following.

Five Thirty - Bed Doesn't have a cult following, but deserves one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhnQMB5K6bc

Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue - only completed solo album from the Beach Boys' drummer. Doesn't sound like a Beach Boys album. Still sounds good.

Mark Eric - A Midsummer's Day Dream - It was 1969, and power trios, serious R&B, the first pangs of metal, and Jimi Hendrix's guitar pyrotechnics were changing the face of music, and 16-year-old Mark Eric was ignoring all of the above, instead preferring the softer, sunnier pop of a few years earlier. It evokes Spanky & Our Gang, the Mamas & Papas, anything produced by Curt Boettcher, and of course the Beach Boys, although more Dennis than Brian, not only because his soulful voice recalls the middle Wilson brother, but also because like Dennis, Mark Eric was also a real surfer, and his songs capture those emotions in a way that even Brian's accounts of the sport picked up secondhand from Dennis don't quite capture. Listen to the track below and you can just feel the loneliness of a guy in his wet suit looking for stray waves on a dreary September day, surveying a bleak scene where those vaunted California Girls have disappeared with the cool, drifty weather, and only a few diehard surfers stay to brave the bleak, empty beaches. I love the way the lyrics become more personal as the song goes on. Great, great stuff, but it was not for its time, and it didn't sell. Mark Eric never made another record.

Anyone mentioned "Quality Street" World of Twist yet?

I've not heard it myself but it seems to be a qualifier.

Mark G, Friday, 12 August 2011 10:57 (fourteen years ago)

One more one-album wonder I'll rep for: Dios (s/t). I saw them opening for Beulah's last show in my area and was impressed, their music drew influence from both Pavement and the Beach Boys (who decades earlier attended the same high school). They already had an EP out, but before they could gain much traction with their new album, they were sued by Ronnie James Dio, who thought his band "Dio" sounded too much like "Dios". Ronnie James Dio also had alot more money and could afford better lawyers. Guess who won the case? Dios, both the band and the self-titled album, were renamed "Dios (Malos)" - yes, with parens. They also took the opportunity to change a few album tracks, so arguably they are disqualified since there are two versions of their only album. I fend for both versions being combined into one which is probably how it will eventually will be sold, much like UK and US albums with same title but slight track differences. In any case, they never followed up Dios/Dios (Malos) with further recordings.

CLUB PISCOPO (DJP), Friday, 12 August 2011 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

I oughta reboot this thread with a "let's not nominate every album we can think of that fits the category" option so we can actually have the poll because 200+ option polls are like the dumbest thing ever.

Truly. Okay, as much as I love Young Marble Giants and United States of America (both worthy choices) I have played The Suicide Commandos "Make A Record" 20x more than either, and maybe 100x more than "Never Mind The Bollocks." So this is my vote:

Will the album list get compiled, and we get to choose 20 and put them in order?

kind of annoyed by the reasoning for excluding The Glove

CLUB PISCOPO (DJP), Friday, 12 August 2011 16:19 (fourteen years ago)

So what's going to happen?

I'm going to look at the .txt file I compiled from the names, think "that's too many and makes for one of those dumb polls with a trillion options," and then probably have a beer

I would argue that U.N.P.O.C. released only 1 album since the "second" live album released around the same time, and it was nothing more than a 250 copy limited edition CDr that had all but two of the same songs

And judging from all the bands that I recognize in this thread, I'd vote U.N.P.O.C. as the best artist

I'm pretty sure it was put out under her own name and self titled in 1979. The 2003 reissue is credited to Roberto Cacciapaglia and the album title changed to The Ann Steel Album. I was hoping it would count but realise this may be a long shot.

@ KP Really? That is interesting! I haven't read anything about that record, all of my knowledge about it was gathered from extemporaneous commentary from the friend who introduced it to me, including "Sears catalog model" "from middle America" "contacted by Italian dance producer" "she wrote all the lyrics herself, and cheekily calls punk 'boring' in 1979"

Yeah those were the things I knew about her too before I started looking for the album late last year. I quickly discovered you could either pay an absolute fortune for the orginal vinyl with her name on it or the Roberto Cacciapaglia CD version which was slightly less and the one I ended up settling for. It's probably the last album I heard that really blew me away.

I'll rep for this one too, but he released his second album about 5 years later, and a couple of indie-label albums more recently.

The original LP of Would You Believe is one of the rarest rock albums you're likely to (not) find - only about 25 were made, intended to be sent to promoters and radio, but financial problems at Immediate prevented it ever going into full production, despite excellent reviews and the support of several of rock's aristocracy.

I can't find much online about Philamore Lincoln, except that his sole album (on Epic) was released in 1970, and features half of Led Zeppelin backing him up (Jimmy Page on guitar, John Paul Jones on cello), but was likely recorded a few years earlier given that Pagey and JPJ were otherwise occupied by this time. But in 1968, Page had recently joined the Yardbirds after years of studio session work, and Jones continued backing recording sessions for one more year, including the late-period Yardbirds. Yet another Yardbird, Chris Dreja, took the front and back cover photos. There seems to have been no promotion for the album; but Mary Hopkin had a UK hit with a cover of his "Temma Harbour" which appears in original form on this album.

Anyway, the music itself probably already sounded dated when it was first released, but strong hooks never go out of style, and songs like "You're the One" and "When You Were Looking My Way" remain tasty morsels of wistful '60s British pop.

this is a funny thread... any band that records one album that's even remotely remarkable or successful inevitably makes a second, unless some sort of tragedy intervenes. so this thread's pool is fairly narrow, consisting of bands who either never had a hit or found an audience EVER (ie, no reunions or comeback albums a la Gary Wilson or whoever), or bands who willfully disbanded (ie Young Marble Giants) following their initial foray.

Richard Nixon's Field of Warmth (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 15 August 2011 21:30 (fourteen years ago)

remarkable and successful are two v v different things, and i'd argue that there are plenty of artists who made just a single remarkable album.

Izzat rilly the same Jim Sullivan? awesome
Yep, definitely the same guy.

I can't find much online info about him. Really obscure even by cult-figure standards, and much of what I can find doesn't agree with other sources, and not many people who knew him seem to be speaking up. Here's what seems certain: He made his first album in 1969 backed by the Wrecking Crew; here's the best information I found from the guy involved in the recent reissue (a good quality needle-drop, since a search didn't turn up any master tapes). Made a second self-titled album in 1972, on a different label, that's likeable but doesn't seem to draw the sort of raves its predecessor did. Also released a single on RCA around that time. The 2nd album was also recently reissued on CD by this Korean company whose legitimacy or quality I know nothing about. The song track listings are in the wrong order, although they play in the correct order on the CD itself (the two songs they made available on their site for streaming are also misidentified). He drove out to Nashville in 1975, stopping at a motel in Santa Rosa on the way. That's the last he is ever seen.

Accounts of those last days vary maddeningly. He was driving either a VW Beetle or a truck. His guitar and wallet were found in the motel room, or maybe he never even checked into his room and there was no sign he ever occupied it. He told friends he was depressed and just wanted to disappear, or he told friends how excited he was about the impending third album he was going to record in Nashville where he thought his music would be better received. A search of the area turned up a body that didn't match Sullivan at all. Both cases remain unsolved.

Col. Poo has it right about Black Tambourine. Singles compiled twice, no studio album

Nominating Postal Service - Give Up (fuck the hater) and Madvillain - Madvillainy

of course, both of these feature artists who have a ton of other albums, so maybe they're not in the real spirit of this

I'm pretty sure Oasis had more than one album...

ah, but.

Mark G, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 12:58 (fourteen years ago)

Looks like they had a complete chage of lineup after that album though, so maybe it counts?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 13:07 (fourteen years ago)

Tony McCarroll became their drummer, the rest is history.

Mark G, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 13:25 (fourteen years ago)

Uncarved Block is another fav, hadn't really considered it in the terms of being a one-off record. Fans of Flux should check out the Von Spar S/T from a few years ago.

Yeah, thought about nominating this as well, but figured it might be ixnayed.

I don't own them anymore but I seem to think Come On Down is longer than Rehab Doll... not sure why one would be considered an EP vs. an LP.

the other people place lifestyles of the laptop cafe

The Other People Place was James Stinson, who released several albums under other pseudonyms, so I don't think this counts. Otherwise there'd be plenty of electronic music albums to nominate, as those folks are fond of changing their artist names all the time.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 06:58 (fourteen years ago)

Shaggs Own Thing is a compilation but of stuff recorded after their debut and no previously released.

Mark G, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 08:11 (fourteen years ago)

How is it a compilation then? Isn't "stuff recorded after their debut and no previously released" = album. Or how do you define an album?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 08:17 (fourteen years ago)

Exactly my point.

Then again, upthread: Does "Grace" Jeff Buckley qualify? If so, so do The Shaggs.

Mark G, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 08:18 (fourteen years ago)

It's not a studio album. It's a collection of stuff put out long after they broke up. It doesn't take molecular science to figure this out. it's like the 8 billion sex pistols comps but they only made one album iirc tbh ffs

Cree Summer - Street Faerie
Brie Larson - Finally Out of P.E.

― Super Villains With Drum Machines (MintIce), Thursday, August 11, 2011 11:22 AM

this is the only mention i could find of the cree summer album on ilx. i loved it at the time, but listening now for the first time in ages and it's, uh, idk. it sounded great when i was nineteen and that seems about right. it's just the right amount of edgy cheese and cringe to still be listenable in a novelty sort of way (i mean c'mon, the guitar solo on 'mean sleep'? hilarious!). i also wonder what most of the songs are about because they don't really make sense. overall, i don't remember it sounding so overproduced. it sounds very thin and lightweight when i hear it now. seems like the exact kind of music that only gets listened to in "recommended if you like. . ." scenarios.

I know this is a dead thread, but I'd have nominated:

Rosie Vela - Zazu
Bill Nelson's Red Noise - Sound-On-Sound (if it doesn't count as a Bill Nelson album)

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 13 October 2021 01:28 (four years ago)

Wow – Brie Larson released an album as a teenager(?)

Ernie Graham's self-titled album from 1971, backed by Brinsley Schwarz, is a fave. One album and one single, seven years later (appropriately issued on 1 Off Records (a Stiff sub-label)).
