Haha, re "The Show Goes On": I guess it's just cool to hear the "Float On" sample, how it's manipulated, or hell, the fact that there's a top-10 hit that even *has* a recognizable sample, which makes it sound pretty different from the rest of the pop landscape in 2011.

And that is just a recreation of the melody from "Float On" for the Lupe song, I guess that was one of the many battles he went through over the album. I can't remember which it was for sure right now, but either Modest Mouse's lable wouldn't let him use it, or Lupe's label didn't want to pay for it. But, yeah jaymc, your point stands re an identifiable "sample" like this.

i liked "Show Goes On" before i realized what the corny-ass sample was, still grudgingly like the song (way more than anything off The Cool -- sometimes an artist's true vision is such bullshit that selling out is actually an improvement)

I don't hate it, btw, I just think its overplayed and a bit cheesy.

I hate the way the sample sounds and the tempo and groove of the beat picks up on all of the things I DIDN'T like about The Cool ("Paris, Tokyo", to a lesser degree "Gold Watch") and focuses on it rather than the stuff on that album I really, really liked ("The Cool", "Hip-Hop Saved My Life", "Little Weapon", "Streets On Fire", "Hello Goodbye")

i don't think of "Show Goes On" as plodding, the beat feels very busy with a lot of forward momentum to me

there are a lot of songs that bounce into the upper reaches of the Hot 100 off iTunes purchases that aren't really 'hits,' but anything that stays in the top 40 for more than a couple weeks is generally getting played every hour on the hour on at least one major radio format

As far as the LA electroclash thing goes, I feel like there's a stronger basis in electro (in the original sense of the term) rhythms than in comparable scenes in other cities and that's kind of it's distinctive thing? I may be talking out of my ass tho.
