i guess they're still doing the "C list performers play unintroduced performances leading in and out of commercials" thing of the past few years. made way more sense when they used to let acts like that perform outside during the red carpet pre-show.

― J0rdan S., Monday, 29 August 2011 08:38 (fourteen years ago)
And I'm glad they got him to do the Amy tribute instead of going the more obvious route, cause Adele's Sarah Mclachlan-disguised as soulster ass would have butchered it.
― markers aurelius (The Reverend), Monday, 29 August 2011 08:40 (fourteen years ago)
haha xp
yeah he was a decent choice -- the thing about it was that he could do an up tempo song and make more of a fun, celebratory thing than if they had someone singing one of her ballads
― J0rdan S., Monday, 29 August 2011 08:44 (fourteen years ago)
it's weird, thinking more about it, thankfully she did a song like "valerie" bcuz they couldn't do a tribute by singing "rehab" obviously, and even "you know i'm no good" and "back in black" would have a weird undertone after her death
― J0rdan S., Monday, 29 August 2011 08:46 (fourteen years ago)
Right. In that regard, maybe "Valerie" wasn't as odd of a choice as it looked. Pretty much anything from Back to Black would have either been too down, or too close to the bone, or both, and the stuff from Frank isn't well-known enough. I had assumed it was going to be a medley when it started though.

this was alternately hilarious and sad. Justin Bieber looks like a nerdy little lesbian robot. the Lady Gaga and Brian May thing was like some sort of terrible Kids in the Hall performance art parody sketch, and yet I came away with the distinct impression that this is something that is intended to be taken seriously...? Chris Brown's bit was more like a circus act than a musical performance, makes me think that people have really lost interest in the performative aspect of pop music in general (nobody interested in watching someone physically play or sing, too boring). the woman with the leg in the cast in the white chair and her band playing under the ads, man that was so sad... had no idea who they were, just started referring to them as the Taco Bell Farmer's Insurance Dove Bar Band.

Dan, I obv don't want to dismiss how you feel personally about how OFWGKTA represents the black community or whatever. That's important to you and obv something I can't speak to.
But I mean to the majority of people who actually know OF lyrics they are a product of the predominately white Pitchfork/Vice/Thrasher/Fader culture. To anyone that DOESNT know their music, they presented themselves at the VMAs as industry suckup toadies psyched to get a meaningless award.
― step your 'îron game up, jamie xx (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 29 August 2011 16:02 (fourteen years ago)
I don't disagree with any of that; the difference is that I see that as even more problematic in terms of the ardor with which they're being embraced. For some hard-to-divine reason*, I find it really really really REALLY problematic when the white press falls all over themselves to praise some kid whose music I don't really like anyway and cite as the main reason how willing he is to talk about how viciously he want to mistreat women and how easy it is for him to drop homophobic slurs.
We've already told Chris Brown that it is totally cool and okay for him to have smacked Rihanna silly because hey we weren't there and she probably had it coming. I don't think it's particularly cool or a good idea to tell Tyler it's totally cool and okay for him to frame his entire artistic persona as a nihilistic, woman-hating shit.
* yes I read your first paragraph

I honestly think there is some new-millennial Norman Mailer shit going on where the white press is fawning over dude because he likes Toro Y Moi and skateboarding and slasher flicks and Vice magazine—stuff white ppl consider THEIR culture. Like when a cool black dude comes out and co-signs our obsessions, it VALIDATES the white hipster "culture" (lol) in a weird way, and ppl can't wait to tell everyone.

I'm more inclined to blame things like the music industry itself, the lowest-common-denominator audience they pander to (stupid white teenage boys and girls, mostly), the press, etc. than I am the artists themselves. artists are relatively powerless compared to these forces imho.

I don't understand the impulse to write an article about this unless it is a historical piece tracing all of the instances of this exact same fetishization curve back through human history.
xp: white ppl are not entirely to blame for Chris Brown, but I don't think white people are entirely to blame for Odd Future either; however, yelling at white people about how black people need to stop supporting scumbags isn't really going to accomplish much unless all the white ppl are secretly hiding whips, waiting for the opening to re-establish slavery

anyway, what dan is saying is interesting, but there's two things at work here. as it pertains to odd future being embraced by white, indie audiences, i think there is certainly a kernel of truth in the idea (dan is echoing cord jefferson here) that it is partly because that audience is attracted to black, male rage because it's a way to feel dangerous w/o actually being dangerous. BUT, as it pertains to odd future being embraced by the mainstream writ large -- the vmas, kanye west, etc -- it's because they break a lot of stereotypes as to what we expect to see and hear from our popular rappers

lol and by proxy I now like "Lemonade" a lot more than I ever did
although I still hate the way Gucci sounds
I think the thing I am most furious about right now is that I've only checked out two things on this list and I've loved them both, completely throwing into disarray my baseline assumption that I hate modern hip-hop.

i don't think "rage" is OF's selling point at all, otherwise their audience would listen to a lot of other rappers for whom anger/rage (whether political or whatever) is a much more defining trait. i think a lot of their fanbase mainly sees them as harmless skinny college-age kids who wear ironic kitten t-shirts and have barely worked a job (legal or illegal) a day in their lives, i.e. not very different after all. the infantile "facebook is being such a faggot right now deleting my page" anger lends a frisson of edginess to what they do but it's not the main selling point the way it was for, like, KoRn and their fanbase in the '90s.
― ✇ ruehl (some dude), Monday, 29 August 2011 20:10 (fourteen years ago)
yeah rage isn't really accurate. it's the casual nihilism, the standard "I don't give a FUCK" stance

i think katy actually topped nicki (or dug the ditch under her or w/e) last night.

i def agree that "post-millienial internet nihilism" is helping them with sales among 4chan types and the /mu/ board or whatever, but p sure it has nothing to do with the reason that 30 year old, Murikami-reading, Herzog-watching rock critics are slobbering on them, which is what we were talking about.

Count me in as another late 20-something who grew up with Buzz Bin, Beavis and Butthead and TRL. I've felt out of touch with the people that show up on the VMAs for the past 3 years. Everyone wore costumes because they're all my age and saw the Spice Girls wear the same silly clothes in 97. Gaga, Katy and Nicki need to bite the bullet and become a girl group, they'll be all "GRRL POWER RAWR!".
