spoon, classic or dud? search and destroy?

jack, Sunday, 8 September 2002 03:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't say "classic" compared to everything else ever done in the world, but they're pretty damn good, not "dud." Some of their EPs are fairly eh, but I similarly have trouble saying "destroy."

Definitely search Girls Can Tell, and to a lesser extent the new one.

wl, Sunday, 8 September 2002 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: "You Gotta Feel It"

As classic as a late 90's/early 00's indie band can be...

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Sunday, 8 September 2002 03:43 (twenty-three years ago)

TELEPHONO - pure solid classicness. Esp. "Nefarious".

I get the impression that, as Spoon gets closer to refining their own unique sound, it gets farther away from the things about their sound I originally liked. Kind of like Bowery Electric did.

doug, Sunday, 8 September 2002 05:10 (twenty-three years ago)

heard Kill the Moonlight twice and thinks it's absolutely GREBT! i understand they've been around for quite some time but i don't know any of their older stuff, so this would be a partial S/D answer then...

willem, Monday, 9 September 2002 04:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only heard the Loveways EP, Girls Can Tell and the new one. All great. Classic is pushing it, but great, certainly.

gazuga, Monday, 9 September 2002 06:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Girls Can Tell and Kill the Moonlight are bores. The Soft Effects EP, Telephono and the absolutely amazing Series of Sneaks are marvelous.

Yancey (ystrickler), Monday, 9 September 2002 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

"Telamon Bridge" off of some Matador compilation is pretty damn near-perfect.

gygax!, Monday, 9 September 2002 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

quick answers:

Telephono: monochromatic, oblique, of course pixiesish. Solid all the way through.

A Series of Sneaks: Xgau just called it "too spiky and too cryptic." in his CG entry on KTM. It's up to your Wire and/or Pavement-damaged tastes whether that is possible. I like this one because it sounds like they wrote an album of almost-radio-ready alt-rock and then pruned off anything obvious. A real tease of an album, it circles and nudges around the implied payoff (ie the Cobain kick-in chorus) and never slaps you with it, always taking the last-second exit elsewhere or nowhere. Tension with no release, a rare thing in american guitar rock.

Girls Can Tell: vulgar choruses galore. I only find myself going back to "Everything Hits At Once," a vibe-led Fleetwood Mac rip.

Kill the Moonlight: haven't made up my mind yet. Obvious protools touches. Digs deeper into the repetition of stuff like "Take the Fifth." and the fractured character of Sneaks. I like the 12string/falsetto number near the end.

g.cannon (gcannon), Monday, 9 September 2002 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Start with the EPs first (Soft Effects and LoveWays), as they're cheaper and filler-free. Soft Effects is a perfect, concise, complete musical statement; "Mountain To Sound" remains my favorite Spoon song ever.

Nick Mirov, Monday, 9 September 2002 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

six months pass...
Good description, g.cannon. They're patient (maybe too much for their own good?)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 31 March 2003 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

wait a minute tracer! i thought you didn't know who spoon was?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 31 March 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

thx.

Still haven't made up my mind about Moonlight yet. I think "too patient" is good. They have plenty of songs where they seem to think a small idea is a big one, ie it won't come off as minimal and/or baroque but just thin; they'll sit on something dull for too long.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Monday, 31 March 2003 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

life is mysterious, Yanc3y, what is true today might not have been true yesterday

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 31 March 2003 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

the first half of moonlight is great.

life's not mysterious, tracer. life's an asshole.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 31 March 2003 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw them last night and loved them. Just picked up Series of Sneaks, but haven't played it yet.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 17 July 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Fitted Shirt" is in my rock pantheon, Elvis Costello wing.

All three albums I own (Series of Sneaks, Girls Can Tell, Kill The Moonlight) are good, but only the first two are absolutely essential to me. Kill The Moonlight feels a little too smooth.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 17 July 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And a little incomplete. The songs are all build-up and no payoff.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 17 July 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Complete dud. Bland and insipid. I can't connect with this kind of music in the slightest.

Clay, Thursday, 17 July 2003 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

all build-up and no payoff

That's what I like about that album!

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 17 July 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Calling it insipid is a bit much.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 17 July 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the production on "small stakes" pleases me greatly, especially the clattering drums near the end

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 17 July 2003 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Actually I had the same complaint when I first heard them, but the key thing to realize about Spoon is that they're all payoff.

Personally, I think they're stone cold Classic. And not just because Jim Eno is such a nice guy because he always remembers my name and says hi when I go to see them.

As I said earlier in the thread, if you're still skeptical about Spoon, get the Soft Effects EP.

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 17 July 2003 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Total fucking classic.
Series of Sneaks is a near-perfect pop album, with Telephono just a step below it but still fantastic. When I use the word "pop," this is what I'm thinking of, not N'sync or whatever. I never really liked Girls Can Tell that much, I thought that was the one that was too smooth, whereas Kill the Moonlight took the smooth sound and added some weirdness and lo-fi grit to make it more palatable. Yeah, the Soft Effects EP is great too.
I love the way Britt Daniels sings, with those ridiculous exclamations ("OW!") in the middle of nowhere. I've been accused of sounding like him, I don't hear it, but I've probably stolen some of his style.

NA. (Nick A.), Thursday, 17 July 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think both Girls Can Tell and Kill the Moonlight are great pop albums. There's something about the mood - you feel you've heard the songs before, but they stick with you somehow. Oddly affecting pop classicism. Classic.

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 16 January 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I think both Girls Can Tell and Kill the Moonlight are great pop albums. There's something about the mood - you feel you've heard the songs before, but they stick with you somehow. Oddly affecting pop classicism. Classic, then.

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 16 January 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a sucker for minimalism... Spoon is full songs with minimalist parts. And the keyboard player does some pretty ingenious things.. Too bad I can't find his name anywhere. "Everything Hits at Once" & "Me and the Bean" are wonderful ... Although Telephono is still my fave.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 16 January 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

my graduate advisor told me that one b. daniel used to fuck up her home at house parties in austin.

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 21 January 2005 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

thats just the nature of a house party, and why i stopped having them. maybe thats what's keeping him from delivering this record.

attn people of austin: stop letting britt into your homes, so that he may finish his record!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 21 January 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

classic!

Kill the moonlight is my fave. Girls Can tell 2nd.

IMHO great drumming

really understated and hits in all the right places

Mr Monket (apn99), Friday, 21 January 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Jim Eno (right?) is my favorite 'song' drummer. He plays such simple but ballsy shit on KtM.

Kill the Moonlight is their worst album, but I'll see your excitement and raise you high expectations.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

With that album title, sounds like Britt's biting YOUR style, dude!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Spoon's a'ight. I like about half the songs on Girls Can Tell and also "The Way We Get By," but haven't heard the first couple albums.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Do! It's more aggro.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

They're more aggro, I mean. I'm not sure which of the first three I like the most. I've got Telephono and Series on a c90 with some EP tracks and it kind of blurs. "Motion Detektor" should be 10 minutes long.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's sort of what's been stopping me, though!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

really? I thought you'd dig a really staccato, abrasive yet catchy Pixies-rip thing.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I kind of hope they tone down the echo effects and shit. The second half of Kill The Moonlight OD'd on that stuff.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

really? I thought you'd dig a really staccato, abrasive yet catchy Pixies-rip thing.

Yeah, you're right, I might.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

But I think if given the choice between aggro and non-aggro, most of the time, I'll go with the latter.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

well it's not aggro in a Durst way, just sounds more like a Nirvana-meets-Wire thing then a Billy Joel-meets-Wire thing.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I stand by none of my comparisons btw

miccio (miccio), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah see, imagine if I'd never heard any Spoon before, and Billy Joel-meets-Wire sounds way more fun than Nirvana-meets-Wire.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha!! Billy Joel meets Wire!

Waitaminute...Y'know something? That sounds about right.

righteousmaelstrom, Monday, 31 January 2005 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i must say i'm excited.

g--ff (gcannon), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

all kill the moonlight haters, get off this thread. leave my man alone!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

saying 'kill the moonlight is their worst album' is hardly hate. its faint praise. hehe.

Dude, are you a 15 year old asian chick? (jingleberries), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds more like a Nirvana-meets-Wire thing then a Billy Joel-meets-Wire thing

Which is why I still haven't bought any of their older records. Not that I agree with the comparisons, but number 2 sounds a hundred times more interesting than number 1.

danh (danh), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Billy-Joel-meets-Wire DOES NOT EQUAL piano-meets-sparse-post-punky-pop, for the luvva. If anything, it's MOTOWN-meets-Wire (at least on Girls Can Tell).

Jaymc, A Series of Sneaks is U&K - Telephono does a bit too much of the Pixies worshipping, but it's A-OK (the "worst" of the 4 LPs in my house). I wrote a silly essay way way way back saying that Spoon (on Sneaks) were the Strokes before the Strokes were the Strokes, and I'll stand by that shit until someone shoots me dead, though Spoon has more giddyup than you-know-who.

PiersT, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

None of their albums are solidly great, but there are brilliant songs on each. "The Fitted Shirt" off Girls Can Tell is my favorite.

The best band evah

If you want to win me over then open with two songs from Kill the Moonlight. There was something really fun that happened last night. Britt noticed someone shirt and had him come on stage. He didn't know this person and was not connected with the band. The shirt had lyrics from a song they released just that day so he asked. The guy said he got a notice about the song at 8 AM and then made the shirt for the concert.

My only complaint is that they closed with "Wild," a good live song but not a closer. "Wild" and "My Babe" work live but they could drop Cut. They also only played "I Ain't the One" from Hot Thoughts.
