ILX pre-covers LULU -- the Lou Reed/Metallica album

To quote from the relevant bit of the thread -- and a key requirement in particular:

Can this be the next ILX "pre-covered" album? Please?

― Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Wednesday, September 7, 2011 6:13 PM (Yesterday)

haha i'm into it

―  (gr8080), Wednesday, September 7, 2011 6:14 PM (Yesterday)

i was wondering how that hadn't been suggested earlier

― Speculum (some dude), Wednesday, September 7, 2011 6:21 PM (Yesterday)

one requirement should be that the fake songs have the same running time as the real songs

― Speculum (some dude), Wednesday, September 7, 2011 6:21 PM (Yesterday)

OTM^^

―  (gr8080), Wednesday, September 7, 2011 6:32 PM (Yesterday)

So, when is it out?

How long have we got?

And, where do we get the 'running times' from?

― Mark G, Thursday, September 8, 2011 1:58 AM (8 hours ago)

Available worldwide on October 31 on Universal Music
Available in North America on November 1 on Warner Bros. Records

― Geirge Hongriot (NickB), Thursday, September 8, 2011 2:01 AM (8 hours ago)

Junior Dad (19:28)

Blimey

― Euripides Trousers (Tom D.), Thursday, September 8, 2011 2:02 AM (8 hours ago)

Bleedin' nora!

I was going to bagsy "Cheat on me" but.. Eleven minutes?

.....

.. yeah, I could do that..

― Mark G, Thursday, September 8, 2011 2:03 AM (8 hours ago)

Something like Junior Dad needs someone to mix individual sounds from ILX contributors to make a whole 19 mins.

I have no idea if that's possible, but.

― Mark G, Thursday, September 8, 2011 2:04 AM (8 hours ago)

Claim your songs now.

(EDIT October 12: So this was all done and you can see the results below but here's the basic information:

i'll do brandenburg gate.

tylerw, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:42 (fourteen years ago)

I'll do "The View"

polyphonic, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:51 (fourteen years ago)

Can it be an extended cover of this:

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

dudes, going forward with this project, I really want to make sure that by definition, everybody involved is honest and that we push as far as we possibly can within the realms of reality. Just keep that in mind.

tylerw, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

Right, I officially bagsy "cheat on me"...

Mark G, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

also make sure it’s maybe the best thing done by anyone, ever.

Neil S, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

I mean, I'm ready with inspiration: I listened to my mono "Sister Ray" three days ago!

Mark G, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

Okay, so a running list, and keeping everyone honest:

Brandenburg Gate (4:19) -- tylerw
The View (5:17) -- polyphonic
Pumping Blood (7:24)
Mistress Dread (6:52)
Iced Honey (4:36) -- charlie h
Cheat On Me (11:26) -- Mark G
Frustration (8:33)
Little Dog (8:01) -- upper mississippi sh@kedown
Dragon (11:08)
Junior Dad (19:28)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

I'm almost tempted to claim Junior Dad and do it as some extended drone thing!

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 8 September 2011 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

I'm wavering on volunteering for Junior Dad, it'll be the "experimental" track though, not dissimilar to the track Lars' dad wasn't keen on in Some Kind Of Monster.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\etc (Matt #2), Thursday, 8 September 2011 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

In fact, count me in for Junior Dad.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\etc (Matt #2), Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

Done. Survive.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

what the actual deadline? "Before October 31" is a little nebulous

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

mistress dread!

sarahel, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:03 (fourteen years ago)

Let's say October 10th for now. Personally I'd aim for earlier, who knows when this thing will leak.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:09 (fourteen years ago)

Assuming sarahel's post was a claim:

Brandenburg Gate (4:19) -- tylerw
The View (5:17) -- polyphonic
Pumping Blood (7:24)
Mistress Dread (6:52) -- sarahel
Iced Honey (4:36) -- charlie h
Cheat On Me (11:26) -- Mark G
Frustration (8:33)
Little Dog (8:01) -- upper mississippi sh@kedown
Dragon (11:08)
Junior Dad (19:28) -- Matt #2

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:09 (fourteen years ago)

I wanna do "Dragon"

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:10 (fourteen years ago)

Done. "Frustration" and "Pumping Blood" to go -- as Elvis Telecom brought up the whole idea in the first place I say he has to have one of those.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

it was indeed: not sure whether "mistress dread" will be something that sounds vaguely like dub reggae or something that sounds vaguely like an italian horror movie soundtrack

sarahel, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

I'm in for "Frustration"

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

I'm down for "Pumping Blood".

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

Annnnnnnd done:

Brandenburg Gate (4:19) -- tylerw
The View (5:17) -- polyphonic
Pumping Blood (7:24) -- Pleasant Plains
Mistress Dread (6:52) -- sarahel
Iced Honey (4:36) -- charlie h
Cheat On Me (11:26) -- Mark G
Frustration (8:33) -- Elvis Telecom
Little Dog (8:01) -- upper mississippi sh@kedown
Dragon (11:08) -- DJP
Junior Dad (19:28) -- Matt #2

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

if this will help anyone, it is a bad instrumental cover of metallica's version of whiskey in the jar-roooo that can be repurposed:

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

I've got the first track that frees up when someone gets "too busy" to do this.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

thinking about sampling Lars' hawaiian shirt rant from the Some Kind of Monster dvd extras

sarahel, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

Noted re: n/a as backup.

Okay rules as such, since I love herding cats or something:

* Deadline is October 10th at absolute latest, earlier if possible; just send it as an attachment to my e-mail, mp3 or FLAC or whatever.

* Per some dude's note above, songs must be exactly the same length as the real thing

* Otherwise, you know the drill

We also need an exact album title, cover art and figuring out the best way to host and share this (SoundCloud, presumably?)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

could you ilx webmail that e-mail?

sarahel, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

Oh lord, it's no secret -- ned at kuci dot org

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

Geirge Hongriot (NickB), Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

Let's just hope Lars and Lou won't sue your asses...

Mule, Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:29 (fourteen years ago)

Should I listen to the older version of Junior Dad that's up on youtube or just wing it? y/n

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\etc (Matt #2), Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:32 (fourteen years ago)

Don't. It wouldn't be a proper pre-cover if you did.

Mule, Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:34 (fourteen years ago)

You should use the lyrics though.

charlie h, Friday, 9 September 2011 07:57 (fourteen years ago)

Saw this too late :-/

Put me down as back-up if anyone else can't make it!

Vision Kreayshawn Newsun (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 9 September 2011 11:35 (fourteen years ago)

Almost sounds like we could do an entire second version of this!

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 9 September 2011 12:42 (fourteen years ago)

deluxe edition? bonus choose-yr-own song titles!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 9 September 2011 12:48 (fourteen years ago)

imo for some of the longer tracks you could probably just take the contributions of 2 posters and edit them together (as incongruously as possible, of course)

some dude, Friday, 9 September 2011 13:14 (fourteen years ago)

Psyched for this!

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 9 September 2011 13:25 (fourteen years ago)

i'd say it's within the realms of reality for people to do different versions of the same song. as long as as everyone is honest by definition.

tylerw, Friday, 9 September 2011 14:37 (fourteen years ago)

If we want to do a companion version let's go to town. And why not? LULUse Your Confusion I and II.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 September 2011 14:40 (fourteen years ago)

it should be like that Junkie XL album with the AM and PM discs

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Friday, 9 September 2011 14:41 (fourteen years ago)

Damn straight!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 September 2011 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

Just the U2 one, (link above)

Mark G, Saturday, 10 September 2011 07:20 (fourteen years ago)

geez these songs are long - otherwise I might give a stab at one

Not much of a lyricist (at least for anything faintly resembling Lou Reed or Metallica style) so would need someone who just wants to write lyrics to ilxmail them to me, after which I'll set them to music and submit. Any frustrated lyricists out there?

I really need to learn GarageBand or something

BTW is there a working link to the U2 precover? I need ideas!

maybe others would disagree, but the time thing should not be a deterrent...i mean we're talking about a new planetary system. what does time even mean now, u know?

i think lou had this posted on the studio wall during the lulu sessions.
i assume loutallica also started with the track times and went from there. obviously Junior Dad has to be 19:28 -- not a second longer or shorter!!!

tylerw, Friday, 16 September 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 16 September 2011 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

Hah, it's probably pretty hard to sustain interest over 19 and a half minutes, I suspect. I have this sneaking suspicion that few are going to be that into mine to begin with (I went the ambient noise/drone route after all) but I suspect even fewer are still going to be listening by the end of it.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 16 September 2011 23:45 (fourteen years ago)

It's ironic, one of the recent ILX comps was 77 seconds, max per track...

Mark G, Saturday, 17 September 2011 00:02 (fourteen years ago)

xpost -- I listened to it all the way through! And rather liked it.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 18 September 2011 21:14 (fourteen years ago)

so I've worked on my demo today. it's gonna take a LOT more work to finish this track but I'm pretty excited so far. just hope I'll finish on time... and I make it to the 11.26min (without...cheating too much) !

AlXTC from Paris, Sunday, 18 September 2011 21:48 (fourteen years ago)

I need to bow out of this. Someone please take over "The View" for me.

Night Nurse with Wound (Jack Battery-Pack), Monday, 19 September 2011 06:07 (fourteen years ago)

I suspect as we'll get closer to the deadline and people realize they have 2 days to make a 20min track, there will be a lot "why did I get into this !?".

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 19 September 2011 15:45 (fourteen years ago)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 September 2011 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

DO NOT BLOW THIS, PEOPLE.
I mean, Loutallica had a deadline too! And they made the album of the year. The album of the decade.

tylerw, Monday, 19 September 2011 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

And hey, if Sean could be the first one in and he had one of the 20 minute tracks...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 September 2011 15:50 (fourteen years ago)

I could hand in mine now but it would be very, very boring

BTW Garageband aficionados? If you've dragged out a loop for like 11 minutes in order to establish a foundation for your song, is there an easy way to cut the loop off say 2 min or do you have to drag the loop back in? Oh, maybe I can drop another loop on top of the one I want to truncate?

sick yr finger up his butt (DJP), Monday, 19 September 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

Are you keeping the 1 and 2 to those names, or are you compiling "first one in for the designated track" gets onto disc 1?

Mark G, Monday, 19 September 2011 15:52 (fourteen years ago)

I'm keeping them as is unless I experience some amazing revelation when I listen to them all straight through. But hey, this is the kind of project that everyone's welcome to make their own tracklisting.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 September 2011 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

in my head I'm calling them "LU" and "LULU"

sometimes it's "LULU" and "LULULULU"

sick yr finger up his butt (DJP), Monday, 19 September 2011 15:57 (fourteen years ago)

planning on doing some serious work this weekend

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 19 September 2011 16:02 (fourteen years ago)

Of course, there are three discs in this set.

Mark G, Monday, 19 September 2011 16:04 (fourteen years ago)

Dan - drag your playhead to the point you want the loop to end, select the loop in the timeline and then hit Command T. That should split it in two, and you can highlight the section you don't want and delete it.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 19 September 2011 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

And if you want it to drop out, then come back in, just do the playhead reposition/Cmd-T trick twice to slice it twice, and then delete the section in the middle.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 19 September 2011 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

Does that invoke the "Split" menu command? Because I tried and that and all it did was delete the loop up to that point in the timeline. (I am trying to split right at the loop border, could that be why it's not doing what I want it to do? Like, it would work if I was chopping up a loop but because I'm trying to end a loop cycle I'm confusing the application?)

sick yr finger up his butt (DJP), Monday, 19 September 2011 16:25 (fourteen years ago)

Hm, that's odd, let me look into that.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 19 September 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe my Garageband is just buggy and awful

sick yr finger up his butt (DJP), Monday, 19 September 2011 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

Damn.. this is a really great idea.

Is this the first time ILX has done pre-covers?

billstevejim, Monday, 19 September 2011 16:30 (fourteen years ago)

Wait... obviously it's not, since I just bothered to re-read the initial post.

billstevejim, Monday, 19 September 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

oh no the streaming link to the U2 album appears to be dead

does anyone have this handy

sick yr finger up his butt (DJP), Monday, 19 September 2011 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

No, Dan, your Garageband is doing the same thing as mine - I guess I'd never split something I'd manually looped before (I often just doing the cut-and-paste method so I can haul things out in blocks). I just tried that and it left the first instance, and then deleted almost everything up to the playhead but not quite...that's not how I would have expected it to react. So uh, yeah, I guess the answer is to roll it back or replace it with cut and paste versions of instance one, instead of using the auto-loop, if you want fine control over where the loops start and stop.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 19 September 2011 16:37 (fourteen years ago)

If I drop another loop on top of the one there, that should truncate it though right? I might just do that and then delete the new loop </lazy>

sick yr finger up his butt (DJP), Monday, 19 September 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

yup. there's something beautiful (and crazy) in making 2 volumes of an album with such long songs...
I don't think I'll even listen to the real loutallica album, actually... (for the U2 one, I haven't listened to the album and never heard the original song I precovered to this day !).

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 19 September 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

er that should be "I guess I'd never split something I'd use the auto-loop feature on before..." but I think you get the idea.

xp And yeah, that might do the trick!

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 19 September 2011 16:40 (fourteen years ago)

For the sake of parity shouldn't you be leaking 30s of the two versions of The View? Bet they prolly sound less unfinished that the original.

alright, i'm going to send mine along shortly. doesn't sound remotely like lou reed or metallica except for a very subtle nod to "for whom the bell tolls" right at the end. but i made up the lyrics as i went along, and i think hetfield and lars would be fairly proud of me for that.

i know.

AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 20 September 2011 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

Been working on mine too today (which was tough since it was a wonderful sunny sunday in Paris). quite like the result so far. I have the basic track recorded now and most lyrics done. still a lot of bits to do as well as all the vocals but I'm pretty confident it will be done on time, now (just one day ago, I still had big doubts I could make it) !
I plan to have everything recorded/arranged by next week-end, then I'll have a week to mix before the dead line.

I'm planning on something like Soundcloud and/or Bandcamp, because hey, why not? (Thinking about how to also get the word out via FB embeds and all too.) So basically the more involvement from people who have worked with all that before, the better.

Okay knowing what the real lyrics to "Dragon" are now I am awaiting DJP's track with bated breath.

Also, Philip's having created the other one for anyone to sing over is truly a golden opportunity.

My version of "The View" is on it's way to Ned..

Can't wait to hear the whole thing..

Managed to avoid listening to the leaked version of the song, so i've no idea how the real thing really sounds (and i'm not sure I want to).

there are these old people, a bunch of older men and women living in a house, who own a bunch of parrots in my gf's neighborhood by the train tracks, they're the only white people who own a house in the neighborhood, pretty much, other than one other family I think. They're super scary all meth'd out and shit, beautiful parrots, but they're really nice to me when they talk to me, sweet on the whole, because I "remind them of kriss angel" ??? and sometimes when I park my car near their place, because it's usually one of the only spots open, they're playing power metal or speed metal or something, a lotta double bass, I think it's their own original shit, it's really good. I just, I just don't know how to approach them about this, I feel like I need them.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 October 2011 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

Okay, hosting question now -- Bandcamp doesn't use mp3s (fair enough) but the total amount of music goes over the free Soundcloud limit of two hours by some distance, and while normally I'd happily sign up for their Lite account to get more, this month is pretty strapped for me in terms of funds. Any thoughts?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 October 2011 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

people could send in uncompressed tracks (WAV or AIFs) so we can use bandcamp; however, these could be pretty cumbersome for the long songs.

congratulations (n/a), Sunday, 9 October 2011 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

alternately, you could put the password on here and people could upload their own tracks to bandcamp

congratulations (n/a), Sunday, 9 October 2011 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

You could also just zip the two albums and make them available on Rapidshare, Mediafire, Megaupload or any other host.

ArchCarrier, Sunday, 9 October 2011 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, thinking I might have to go that latter route.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 October 2011 16:26 (fourteen years ago)

Ned, have you checked out reverb nation? Kinda tackier version of bamdcamo, but might work....

I like having both volumes on rapidshare either way but a streaming option would be nice

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 9 October 2011 16:48 (fourteen years ago)

Can't you upload the two volumes to Soundcloud using two different accounts?

ArchCarrier, Sunday, 9 October 2011 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

could I be listed as "Therapist Sweater"?

If the challenge of writing new lyrics is what's keeping people from adding vocals to Dragon,
if you take a listen,
http://www.mediafire.com/?knqzd6k1nqw5a0a
you'll find out that it's no challenge at all.

Also, if streaming is the issue, how about uploading the album to youtube?

Anyway, here's the press release:

--

It's not surprising, but what is surprising? Indeed, what is surprise? What is? What isn't?

The future is in regard to the past, the present is of the moment, that which is of now. And now is not now yet, but now will yet be, and the now is of that moment so anticipated that when the now is achieved, it will have already been. A moment before the moment occurring, yet in that moment, which is and is not.

LULU, the great work. Within a realm that is real, a reality, and yet beyond those limits. Something yet nothing, for nothing is real, it is nothing to get crunk about. It is everything, and so, the response.

But not the response, the presponse.

Rock (and yet, why just rock?) is ingested here, pre-chewed, unrealized, reified. Its potency defies fertility, not defines it, for limitation is not of this essence.

The words, they were unknown, yet they barked, a canine grace in a feline aperture of a rodential body of an insectoid dream. The acoustic stared at the multiple. Hello, acoustic, we did not see you sitting there.

THE VOICE!

Inscribed onto a genetic code of fragmented realization, a UPC of marketing that which can't for it was and isn't and will be. We had to laugh.

It mirrored, it was one, then two, a dual strand, a single fusion, a unique gathering, a shattering of elements, a ten a twenty a nothing an infinity.

Our morality was a modernity, a ship not steered but flung into the heavens as by an outraged god, turned into a constellation of dark matter. A rough beast, belching towards Cleveland.

Ned, have you listened to all songs that have been sent in now? Or are you waiting to enjoy it in full on ~release day~?

Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 9 October 2011 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

I did a test run of what I had the other day -- it's pretty classic. About to do the same with what I now have added to it all!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 October 2011 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

Should also add that tylerw's cut is incredibly classic and intentionally perfect as an opening number to this whole thing.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 October 2011 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

Mine is coming together, I will send it tomorrow.

I have not decided yet if I will have vocals on it or not, leaning towards "not"

AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 14:07 (fourteen years ago)

One of the more enjoyable things about all this is listening to the various strategies, from sensible to utterly egregious (not a complaint), people had to stretch out their songs to the proper length.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 14:23 (fourteen years ago)

I'm looking forward to that the most, too. ESPECIALLY after being one of the people who had to go through it.

the tax avocado (DJP), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 14:33 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, the fact that the title and timing had to be identical to the model was a challenge + the deadline.
There's this idea that sometimes, having an external constraint can lead to more creativity than being free to do whatever you want.
really true for me. and it was lots of fun too !

AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, the fact that the title and timing had to be identical to the model was a challenge + the deadline.

Yes. For some reason I thought Brandenburg Gate was supposed to be 4.39 long, instead of 4.19. The song was completely done when I found this out, while adding the tags... Then I had to re-do it and 'find' the 20 seconds that were surplus somewhere. I even had fun doing that though!

Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 14:47 (fourteen years ago)

confession: my "brandenburg gate" is four or five seconds longer than the Loutaliica version. may god forgive me.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 14:53 (fourteen years ago)

the tax avocado (DJP), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

I will investigate Audacity; I finally resolved my Garageband problem via the solution I knew would work but didn't want to do (creating a cycle loop of the whole song and exporting that) because for whatever reason (lol aging eyes) I couldn't find the end-of-song marker.

the tax avocado (DJP), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 15:08 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know how you dudes did 10+ mins songs, I padded my song like crazy and it was only 5 mins

Would love this to be the opening line to a Loutallica interview.

oh man i hadn't even realized that the simultaneous play would be possible with the identical tracklisting. i think that should be the official version: both versions of each song at the same time, panned hard left and right.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

...and for people with three ears we could release the version with the actual Loutallica in the third channel.

surely by this point it's possible via noise-canceling tricks etc to engineer it such that panning hard left gives you one album, center gives you another, and hard right gives you the third

the amount of psychic crossover happening here is kind of scary

Wondering how we both decided that a tribute to a German S&M play should somehow include the voices of children.

But yeah, credit where credit is due….

The drums on "pumping blood" were performed by my former roommate (and drummer in the band I used to be in.) I emailed him saying the song was called "pumping blood" and that's what he gave me in return.

He was slated to also fill "Kirk's" shoes, but he got busy, so I had to do it (I don't know how to play the guitar, btw.)

Here he is with his brother on YouTube. Watch the beer bottles to see what take he's on.

wrestlingisreal420 (crüt), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

And I'm not even half way.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, crüt is the bringer of ëvil on this thing.

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

theosophy b. hawkins (donna rouge), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

All right, straight on to VOL. II.

'Brandenburg Gate' works as a great intro, nice groove.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

Love the guitar on 'Pumping Blood'!

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:18 (fourteen years ago)

Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

B-L-U-L-U-D

wrestlingisreal420 (crüt), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

Oooh, 'Mistress Dread', some very mid-80s Sonic Youth vibes here.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

i couldn't decide between PUMP ING BLUD or PUMP INB LOOD, decided the former was funnier

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:26 (fourteen years ago)

Indeed :)

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

oh my god "Dragon" II is killing me

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

J3ff T. sent it in with apologies; for a random improv I think it's perfect!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:29 (fourteen years ago)

Quick, point me to a few albums that sound like 'Mistress Dread'. I want to listen to this stuff all week!

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

CATS
IN MY DRAGONS

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:31 (fourteen years ago)

the tune trainspotting alone makes this fantastic

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

Dylan is fighting back against Loutallica-mania:

brio, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

Sean, did you overdose on Chill Out before you recorded yours?

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:47 (fourteen years ago)

lol, sean's is a good way to end this.

tylerw, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

I AM THE DOG - WHOOOOO!

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:56 (fourteen years ago)

This was probably the most fun I ever had recording

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

loving the 808+synth coda on Little Dog I

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 18:11 (fourteen years ago)

Thx, actually a alesis sr-16, very functional but not particularly prized early 90s drum machine, piano was recorded with a handheld digital recorder and synth is an odd ball cheap yamaha I picked up for 50 on craigslist

It's a little ” loose” because I could not figure out how to make loops so all the parts are played live

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

losing my shit at disc II's "the view"

theosophy b. hawkins (donna rouge), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 18:36 (fourteen years ago)

Ivre kicking off II just as good as "Civil War" kicked off UYIII. Spoken interludes and everything.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks for the kind words, the apology had more to do with people having to listen to 11 minutes of my voice. But it was fun.

Midnight Maniac (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

Sean, did you overdose on Chill Out before you recorded yours?

Hah, it was probably more like Lustm0rd!

Fun fact: the very beginning of mine actually features heavily processed slowed-down loop of the main riff from "Sister Ray". Not that you could tell, anymore!

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

"J3ff T. sent it in with apologies; for a random improv I think it's perfect!"
the delivery on "then... you would have... a lot of dragons" kills me!

hey, not to be all george-lucasy, but would it be weird if i added backing tracks to da croupier's for a special edition release?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

in a similar vein, i start playing the guitar arpeggio from "nothing else matters" right near the end of mine

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

omg matt this little dog!

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

Sean's "Junior Dad" #2 is beautiful.

Antonio Carlos Broheem (WmC), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

That's up to the croup.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

I have CD reviews to do and writing to get done, but what the hell, I've already slept until noon today, may as well listen to this thing.

Midnight Maniac (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

You will find it will make writing those reviews much easier, as in, "Why the hell is this tenth-rate lame black metal wannabe band nowhere near as good as ILX Pre-Covers LULU?"

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:03 (fourteen years ago)

I was thinking about looping the instrumental of "Tom's Diner" under mine eventually as well

da croupier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

so basically, I approve if the backing sounds line the DNA version of "Tom's Diner"

da croupier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

rats! i was thinking more fantasy by mariah carey meets slayer...

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

can we lock this thread since there's an official release thread now?

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

The other thread does seem to have more commenting at present so head over there...
