post something

James Ferraro Boyz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

Action Bronson - only heard 'imported goods' but he raps his ass off. v retro tho.
AraabMusik - dope producer i haven't checked for the new instrumental stuff tho
Asap Rocky - 'peso' is great but not sure yet whether this guy is much more than some cool production
Clams Casino - probably my pick here. 'i'm god' and 'motivation' are both classics imo. feel like his stuff has influenced a lot of rap coming out right now
Main Attrakionz - some really chill vibes but the only song i really bump is 'legion of doom' (is that another clams production actually? sounds like it)
Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire - haven't heard
Shabazz Palaces - i liked this but found it kinda abrasive?
SPACEGHOSTPURPP - i think i checked this out but can't actually remember. all this stuff blurs together a bit

James Ferraro Boyz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 18:49 (fourteen years ago)

haven't heard most of these and the few I have I didn't like - except for my man Butterfly who is awesome, so I voted for him

you will always be wrong (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

i like some spaceghostpurp songs, especially the one thats like, "suck a dick every day" for the first minute and a half, or whatever it is, but its too harsh &trebly to ever listen to the whole album

hank azari & iii (flopson), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 18:51 (fourteen years ago)

this is basically chillwave the rap genre

D-40, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

wait, there is a rapper named asap rocky?

i LOVE LOVE LOVE action bronson but i would

just listening to eXquire today and really digging it! el-P beats :)

dig what i've heard of araabmuzik but seems more like dance music (at least the album i heard)

don't feel real strongly about clams casino and main attrakionz, but they are ok

haven't heard spaceghostpurp

i dig shabazz palaces but the new one was kinda a let down from the EPs i thought

asap rocky didn't leave much of an impression on me in the couple songs i heard

new action bronson > the last ghostface IMO even tho he sounds exactly like ghostface

his producer dude who's name i forgot makes really fun rowdy classic NYC type beats

mb someone already said it somewhere else but something interesting to be said here about how the internet/tumblr has created a new route into the indie consciousness/acceptability for rap on the "backpacker" side of things, only Rap Acts here distinctly in the populist gangsta- is asap rocky and i guess sgp (dont count araabmuzik even tho he makes dipset beats cuz his solo stuff is, as m@tt said, more like trip-hop/idm)

hank azari & iii (flopson), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

i had the same reaction as jordan

n August, Rocky hosted collaborators and internet friends, SF rap duo Main Attrakionz and Florida’s Spaceghostpurrp, at his Garden State condo. Rocky’s been busy in the city, so we met him downtown in a secret blunt-safe basement beneath a clothing store. He told us why he’s not selling drugs anymore (“It’s corny”), what ASAP stands for (everything) and what kinds of girls he likes to fuck (weird ones). Rocky performs with Spaceghostpurrp, GHE20 G0TH1K and Das Racist tonight at Santos Party House. See you there!

but i think spaceghostw/e has some 'good songs'

Gred The Flopson (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

He has a song called "Amuse Pusche"

which is always XD

James Ferraro Boyz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

i like all of these, except for action bronson who i have not heard. it seems a little tedious to care about who also likes them. also i can't tell if calling sgp backpackery was a joke or not.

kaygee, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 21:36 (fourteen years ago)

were you in naughty by nature? need to know

D-40, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 21:41 (fourteen years ago)

i honestly don't know much about him, but spg sounds more like achingly self-aware art-school type making the Three6Mafia version of chillwave than like some "authentic" outsider weirdo R Stevie Moore of dicksuck rhymes.

James Ferraro Boyz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

whiney i originally thought the same about purrp cuz of the obvious influences, but now i think he's actually some weird nasty kid who discovered witch house. i voted sgp btw. i like his production about the same as araab, and he has cool raps too and probably the tightest flow out of all the above i've heard (everyone but bronson, asap rocky, and exquire).

but yeah like is it really unheard of for a young kid to be spending lots of time on internet and therefore being exposed to pyramids and 90s shit?

fennel cartwright, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

i actually think sgp is pretty sincere in his apeing of three 6 mafia, same goes with that chopped and screwed nate dogg tribute he did this year. if you like a lot of that early dj paul/three 6 mafia recordings you're going to have to dig the 'poor' sound quality that goes with it, i think he is just vibing with that tbh.

historyyy (prettylikealaindelon), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

im not saying he's insincere. i'm saying if you hung out with tantrum-boy Ariel Pink or Jandek or something it would probably be pretty weird and outsider, but you could prolly wkiw with Space Ghost and dude would prolly have a pretty lucid convo about Juicy J or the Flatlinerz. I think the "outsider" aspect is an artistic construct than genuine craziness--not that there's anything wrong with that (cf. Edan, MF Doom, etc)

James Ferraro Boyz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 23:05 (fourteen years ago)

like our boy John Maus in that respect

James Ferraro Boyz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

zing it, shitface

Lamp, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 23:09 (fourteen years ago)

sgp is at least 30% self aware but no more than 70% self aware feel me

i think we're on the same tip here but sgp is basically part weirdo, part construct, which is ok.

also ariel pink can be lucid too

fennel cartwright, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 23:18 (fourteen years ago)

zing it, shitface

James Ferraro Boyz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, i've read interviews with Ariel Pink where he comes across as pretty normal. Just seems to get a bit weird when it comes to actually playing music

Number None, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

Lamp if that "gr8" is directed at me, I've only really fucked w/ Action Bronson but (until he did a misogynistic murder fantasy video) i was way into him, still sort of am.

look at this loveable goofball:

yeah he sounds a lot like ghostface but i dunno, i guess if you listen to more than 3 or 4 of his songs and watch his videos and absorb him some, then he's totally his own, loveable thing.

This is the only ‘tube I’ve clicked in this thread and yeah it‘s kinda good in a ‘90s throwback way, everyone OTM about him sounding like Ghost, but his attire choices just make me think “drunk Kevin Smith”

A$AP: I'm not the leader [laughs]. People try and focus on me, but Clams is an impeccable producer, and so is Ty Beats, so is Spaceghost. We all became vegetarians about a month ago-- that means these guys are really dedicated.
