just for the sheer wrong-ness of both delivery and message

"Like Kurosawa I make made films, 'kay I don't make films, but if I did they'd have a samurai."

"Watching X-Files with no lights on, we're dans la maison, I hope the Smoking Man's in this one."

'I make mad films' is inexcusable imo xpost

I'm just thankful that "Another Postcard" (their chimpanzee-themed novelty rap single from 2003) never really made a splash in the US. it's weird that the album it appears on is full of earnest lyrics about suicide and artistic integrity and the shallowness of pop culture. it's like they decided to settle down and make grownup music, but they couldn't resist baiting casual fans who had them pegged as a dumb novelty act. then they gave up and released a children's album called SNACKTIME a few years later.

giant glittering joyful returning elephant (unregistered), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 18:51 (fourteen years ago)

xp when I was a kid I used to love that one, because it sounded like it was not only funny but a legitimately good love song too, until I realized that lyrics like "I'll buy you some art/a Picasso or a Garfunkel" are not really clever at all and that you can't have a double entendre like that if one of the meanings makes no sense

frogbs, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

"chickity china" is, as whiney knows, a reference to a busta rhymes line (at 3:39 here)

oh yeah, "war on drugs" is gorgeous

i don't know, i had a dark period when i was 12 when i thought this band smuggled some pretty great stuff into the non-"one week"/"pinch me" lyrics

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 19:01 (fourteen years ago)

I did a lyrical analysis of "War On Drugs" (ok I put it on a mixtape and wrote a few sentences about how it affected my life) for a high school project. iirc I gave the same treatment to a Staind song and a Candlebox song, both about the sad lives homeless people. gotta say, the BNL song is way more subtle and affecting than most of the songs I considered deep and meaningful when I was 15.

I dunno I'd say for the most part Gordon = Bargainville, but I can go years without wanting to hear Gordon while the songs you mentioned plus "Laika" always stick with me. Otherwise I'm not sure what good albums either of them made.

Bargainville is probably indefensible, or at least no more or less defensible than Gordon is, but as Gordon is the only BNL album I've ever heard all the way through aside from their Xmas one (holidays spent working retail...ugh), I can easily cop to a clear preference of one over the other. Even some of Bargainville's more novelty-ish songs (My Baby Loves A Bunch of Authors, Video Bargainville) had some inventive musical and vocal quirks that BNL never bothered with.

And at least neither of them were the Arrogant Worms.

jer.fairall, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

Gordon had a bunch of neat vocal stuff going on it too, and to be honest most of those "quirks" were some of my least favorite parts of Bargainville

The sham nation of Israel should be destroyed. (Princess TamTam), Thursday, 6 October 2011 09:03 (fourteen years ago)

"if i had a million dollars" is equally as shitty as this song

The way they go from "I'd buy you a fur coat (but not a real fur coat that's cruel)" to "I'd buy you a green dress (but not a real green dress that's cruel)"--I love that.

clemenza, Thursday, 6 October 2011 11:44 (fourteen years ago)

as much as i detest almost every barenaked ladies song i have heard i actually like "pinch me"

teledyldonix, Thursday, 6 October 2011 16:21 (fourteen years ago)

I've been genuinely thinking about which of these to tick for a while now. Tough call, they're all so bad. Ultimately, though, I went with "I'm the kind of guy who laughs at a funeral"

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Thursday, 6 October 2011 16:55 (fourteen years ago)

"Box Set" is actually a pretty pointed song about a 70's one-hit wonder, maybe some of the best lyrics they ever did. And then the next song is "I Love You" which is just puke.

frogbs, Thursday, 6 October 2011 20:04 (fourteen years ago)

"You think you're so smart, well I've seen you naked"

frogbs, Thursday, 6 October 2011 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

i think that "what a good boy" is a pretty great song about gender roles

hmmm I think I shall do another one of these polls for "If I had $1000000"

i'm actually thinking that song bothers me more since it's not really meant to be stupid, not like this

frogbs, Thursday, 6 October 2011 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I don't know anyone who likes this song and yet we all seem to know it. It's like we were all survivors of the same bizarre & horrifying CIA audible waterboarding horror. You think it would be easy to avoid, but then some series of unfortunate events occurs and you somehow end up at Applebees at 11:30 with other people who don't know how they got there and you hear that 'YEEEITS BEEN...' 'Oh Fuck, again?'; and you can just see everyone in a 20 foot radius get that morbid look on there face, like they were all told simultaneously to think about some of the reasons their lives suck. I have no verifiable data but I'm confident a thorough peer reviewed study would reveal that this song produces the exact opposite of the one people get when they listen to Brahms while eating dinner or whatever.

Hardy har har, I'm not even one of those people that spends time creatively explaining why music I don't like is objectively awful and worse than war crimes or whatever. I find it as tired and unamusing as what I'm sure you'll find what I wrote above is. But seriously, fuck this song.

inverting the name of swiss chalet to make it fit the crappy rhyme scheme seems like some kind of apotheosis so i voted for that

Lamp, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 05:09 (fourteen years ago)

I have a tendency to wear my mind on my sleeve
I have a history of taking off my shirt

this is always where my despair peaks w/ this song, I voted for the first but they deserve to be together

System, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

I still stand with my "I'm the kinda guy who laughs at a funeral" vote, but it makes sense that the line that won won. It's certainly the lyric I heard quoted the most by fans back during the song's brief, obnoxious stranglehold on the radio.

jer.fairall, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 02:38 (fourteen years ago)

how many of these could be beastie boys lyrics?

So, the chorus is basically alright?

sad Mings of dynasty (Neanderthal), Friday, 23 June 2023 14:27 (two years ago)

when I was a kid I always heard the chorus as "it's two weeks two days before I say I'm sorry". which in my head made sense because one week + 5 days + 3 days + yesterday = 16 days = 2 weeks 2 days. I thought that was really clever, but that's not what the line actually is!

frogbs, Friday, 23 June 2023 14:31 (two years ago)

"I have a history of taking off my shirt" pisses me off more than the ones that I know are objectively worse, only because it seems geared at "wacky" people with "zany" senses of humor but it never goes above PG-13

sad Mings of dynasty (Neanderthal), Friday, 23 June 2023 14:41 (two years ago)

like Chickety China the chinese chicken is objectively the worst, no question there....

sad Mings of dynasty (Neanderthal), Friday, 23 June 2023 14:42 (two years ago)
