I've softened towards "Give Me Everything but that's all the enthusiasm I can work up. Wiz in a landslide.

i appreciate al ship's "give me everything" stanning. i might not have come around to it otherwise.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:08 (thirteen years ago)

LMFAO, "Party Rock Anthem"
Katy Perry, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"
Maroon 5 f/ Christina Aguilera, "Moves Like Jagger"
Adele, "Someone Like You"

^^^ this sequence is like 1985-level bad

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:09 (thirteen years ago)

"we found love" was at #1 more than any other song this year, which is kind of mindblowing to me because it's so barely even a song with the same vocal melody throughout and that stupid title lyric repeated over and over as a 'chorus' that i often forget it exists altogether

some dude, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:14 (thirteen years ago)

We can say the same abut "Party Rock Anthem."

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

wtf 1985 was a fantastic year IIRC

also when did ILMers start hating sledgehammer bass

Much Ado About Nuttin (DJP), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:21 (thirteen years ago)

this is ghastly:

"Miami Vice Theme" Jan Hammer
"We Built This City" Starship
"Separate Lives" Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin
"Broken Wings" Mr. Mister
"Say You, Say Me" Lionel Richie

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

even during an era where bad, lazy production is rampant, "we found love" stands out as particularly unlistenable. i want to shove calvin harris's toy keyboards down his fucking throat, it is unbelievable to me that a professional producer could have the temerity to inflict those sounds on the world

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

Much Ado About Nuttin (DJP), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:24 (thirteen years ago)

that's not many songs.

black & yellow > give me everything >>>>>>>>>>>>>> hold it against me > s&m > rolling in the deep > we found love >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> grenade > moves like jagger > e.t. > someone like you > last friday night > party rock anthem > born this way

everything after "we found love" (yes calvin harris is terrible but the song battered me into submission after hearing it at a club for the 50th time) is truly horrible.

uberweiss, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:25 (thirteen years ago)

"Miami Vice Theme" Jan Hammer - great tune
"We Built This City" Starship - ... okay yeah
"Separate Lives" Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin - okay song, great bridge
"Broken Wings" Mr. Mister - ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER YOU PHILISTINE
"Say You, Say Me" Lionel Richie - he's done better

LMFAO, "Party Rock Anthem"
Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"

why does progressive house have to mean regressive songwriting? rihanna has plenty of dancey songs w/ 2 distinct melodies

So sick of "Someone Like You" bringing a cloud of darkness over my coffeehouse and sandwich shop.

I didn't know it was Adele for a few weeks--I actually was sure it was Gaga, doing something that sounded like a piano-only cover of "Edge of Glory."

Good voice and all, but now I know what it must've been like to have "The Rose" bring down every trip to the supermarket in 1979.

Cheap desert locations (Eazy), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:55 (thirteen years ago)

I hadn't actually heard "Born This Way" as a song in and of itself until October because every time it came on I would sing "Express Yourself" over it because it annoyed my wife.

SOME SAY LOVE

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

it really is hilarious how much "Someone Like You" sticks out like a sore thumb amongst every other top 10 of the year and pop radio in general -- some stations seemed almost awkwardly apologetic for breaking up the dance party when introducing the songs, and eventually swapped in a garish house remix

some dude, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

"Give Me Everything" does the neat trick of making Ne-Yo sound even thinner and weaker than he actually is

Much Ado About Nuttin (DJP), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

I bet I've heard some of these

Dr Morbois de Bologne (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

apologetic for breaking up the dance party when introducing the songs, and eventually swapped in a garish house remix

But see this is why I hate so much commerical radio right now, like everything just has to fit the exact same vibe. Its not so much that I hate all of the individual songs, its just like one constant mix with absolutely no variation in mood.

there is something in what jon says, it's interesting to me how r&b AND dance AND rock AND indie all (mostly) share the same flattened, superbright, superbusy aesthetic

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:14 (thirteen years ago)

John Legend's "Ordinary People" was the same kind of interrupter a few years ago, in a beautiful way--since it wasn't three times an hour.

Cheap desert locations (Eazy), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

well also "Ordinary People" is a much better song

Much Ado About Nuttin (DJP), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

i'm actually kind of OK with pop radio being so relentlessly dancey (at least in principle, not necessarily in defense of these songs). there are always going to be ubiquitous bad songs, but i'd rather deal with light, uptempo trifles than the kind of big, monotonous, overly serious ballads that topped the charts more frequently in the 80s and 90s.

some dude, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

Voted "S&M," but like most of these. Guess my brain finally went to mush.

dor Dumbeddownball (Eric H.), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

the R&B actually played on urban radio these days is actually mostly slow jams and midtempo, which may be why so little of it crosses over to the pop charts now: biggest R&B songs on urban radio 2011 (non-sandbox redux)

some dude, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:17 (thirteen years ago)

if we had a big, overblown ballad that was as awesome as "Total Eclipse of the Heart" or "Broken Wings", I'd be psyched

Much Ado About Nuttin (DJP), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:17 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I'm not aching for a return of Chris de Burgh style ballads or anything, but I'm just sick of every pop chart song aiming for the late-teens getting ready to go out on a Friday night vibe. There isn't anything inherently wrong with such a vibe, but just, I don't know, there's more territory to be mined.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i mean there's no denying that the homogeneity is pretty stifling at this point

some dude, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:19 (thirteen years ago)

"Separate Lives" Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin - okay song, great bridge

and chorus! the "you have no right" build is incredible! one of the single most moving performances I ever saw in my life was a couple of people lipsyncing this in '86

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:20 (thirteen years ago)

At least some of the success of "Pumped Up Kicks" is as a result of radio programmers wanting a change from Harrispop.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:57 (thirteen years ago)

Mariah doesn't do songs like that anymore, all of her current ballads go "I thought you loved me but you didn't and you wouldn't and I called you on your iPhone and went straight into voicemail and my texts have all been blocked and now you hidin' me on Facebook man I can't even believe that you be/Playin' me"

i think it's dangerous to conflate any sneering at a pop act as corny indie habitual 'sneering at all pop acts' but c'mon LMFAO is the most hatefully terrible shit in the world. like, it's one thing for a journeyman hack like will.i.am to kind of fall into being the king of moronic ringtones after a long, increasingly cynical career, but i feel like it's almost worse when some fuckin' scion of motown decides to turn his douchey 'jersey shore'-esque lifestyle into a series of worldwide hits well into his 30s.

Wiz Khalifa, "Black & Yellow"
Katy Perry f/ Kanye West, "E.T."
Maroon 5 f/ Christina Aguilera, "Moves Like Jagger"

Rihanna, "S&M"
Pitbull f/ Ne-Yo, Afrojack, & Nayer, "Give Me Everything"
Katy Perry, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"
Lady Gaga, "Born This Way"
Britney Spears, "Hold It Against Me"

yeah idk, the difference between those two made up and arbitrary categories is pretty slim -- like i had "moves like jagger" stuck in my head yesterday and i wasn't particularly mad about it

"rolling in the deep" really does nothing for me but i get why it's huge, idk -- there are parts of "hold it against me" that straight up bang tho imo (hint: not the dubstep bridge)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 January 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

yeah maybe i'm reading too much into it -- i just thought it was funny. imo "hold it against me" is just pathetic on every level.

If "Till The World Ends" had charter higher than "Hold It..." (one of FF's weakest songs), it would be my #1.

You can dance to it and there at least three different hooks.

And I love the Ke$ha remix too.

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

i feel like critics (not accusing alfred specifically here) usher britney through bcuz of "toxic" or "slave 4 u" or whatever even tho her new dr luke shit is worse than everyone else's dr luke shit imo

like "till the world ends" would be the fourth best kesha single if it was a kesha single and if it was a kesha single no one would give a shit about it (not that i want ppl to give a shit about kesha, but)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 January 2012 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

it's not as bad as people bizarrely thinking "how i roll" is some sort of highlight on that album

"till the world ends (remix)" worked well enough in a year when lots of pop songs seemed to be about the apocalypse

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

like "till the world ends" would be the fourth best kesha single if it was a kesha single and if it was a kesha single no one would give a shit about it (not that i want ppl to give a shit about kesha, but)

Both are better sound effects than what LMFAO coughs up though.

my ranking is basically the same as Rev's except on mine Bruno Mars is at the very bottom of the list

i feel like critics (not accusing alfred specifically here) usher britney through bcuz of "toxic" or "slave 4 u" or whatever even tho her new dr luke shit is worse than everyone else's dr luke shit imo

like "till the world ends" would be the fourth best kesha single if it was a kesha single and if it was a kesha single no one would give a shit about it (not that i want ppl to give a shit about kesha, but)

this would be a very reasonable argument if it wasn't coming from someone who just defended "hold it against me"

some dude, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

Rihanna, "S&M"
Lady Gaga, "Born This Way"
LMFAO, "Party Rock Anthem"
Maroon 5 f/ Christina Aguilera, "Moves Like Jagger"
Britney Spears, "Hold It Against Me"
Adele, "Someone Like You"
Pitbull f/ Ne-Yo, Afrojack, & Nayer, "Give Me Everything"
--- the line between liking and not liking ---
Wiz Khalifa, "Black & Yellow"
Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"
Katy Perry, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"
Katy Perry f/ Kanye West, "E.T."
Bruno Mars, "Grenade"

Still not sure how I feel about the newer Rihanna.

i think it would be unreasonable if i was calling "hold it against me" one of the 20 best singles of the year, which is where i think "till the world ends" has a chance of finishing in p&j

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 3 January 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i feel you

some dude, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

ke$ha doesn't have anything anywhere near as euphoric and propulsive as 'till the world ends'

prolego, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

i didn't like "till" at all til the remix, now i'm cool w/ it but it's definitely nothing special

some dude, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

Ke$ha needs to participate in a remix of "Beth/Rest."

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

ke$ha is my least favorite person currently making pop. YES, SHE'S WORSE THAN JESSIE MOTHERFUCKING J.

I would argue that "Tik Tok", "We R Who We R" and "Blow" are all more euphoric and propulsive than "Till The World Ends" but that is mostly because I don't like "Till The World Ends".

Much Ado About Nuttin (DJP), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

(I don't really like "We R Who We R" either but at least it's not nu-Brit, who really should have stopped at "3")

In music, as in movies, "inoffensive" is probably my least favorite quality.

dor Dumbeddownball (Eric H.), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 21:23 (thirteen years ago)

both the big singles from her new album are leagues better than "3" and neither of them are that great

The Reverend, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 21:23 (thirteen years ago)

it's not even like offensively inoffensive

Saw Robbie Fulks do some lame LOL rockist makes fun of the year's hits revue, and his list of the top singles was so different from this one I couldn't figure out what ass he pulled them out of. Like, Bruno Mars, but that other song, the one about being lazy. LMFAO, but the "I'm Too Sexy" one. And some country thing about how girls and boys or different. Maybe it was just a top selling downloads list or something?

There was a gimmick where some girl on stage had to guess the singers, and she was stumped more than once, not just by the Il Divo one (or some Il Divo-like one) but also by ... Chris Brown? Was there a Chris Brown hit? With Lil Wayne?

all of the above, although very little of the music i've heard in supermarkets the last few years has been contemporary hits

Mostly the car radio when I'm running errands on the weekend. Sometimes if a superstar like Rihanna or Britney releases a new song and it attracts enough buzz on ILM or other sites I read, then I'll check it out on YouTube first.
