New Cloud Nothings seems good after one listen, a little more aggro than their last one but still catchy.

aggro is good. the drummer sounds pretty sick, too.

albini production is always good for drummers. i still really like that album. not sure what makes them so good when they're doing a pretty standard pop-punk think but whatever it is, it works.

i dunno either. they seem very contemporary while also obviously 90s-reminiscent. but without the distasteful preciousness or insipidity of marquee indie music of the past 10 years. they actually sound like a rock band.

I think new Cloud Nothings is great, and easily the best thing they've done.

i only just learned of The Magic Theatre album from 2010 which is like first three Scarlet's Well albums with a dash of the bugaloos. very nice. strange, mainly considering it is two from ooberman who were more often than not, not very good.

The new Bears record is okay, a couple of great songs, sails a bit close to the Shins and Pains Of Being Pure At Heart in places.

Polica has been releasing great songs that seem to only be getting local acclaim. They have a similar sound to bands like Phantogram or Grimes, but have not gotten as much attention as either

Like the ramshakle quality to the Cloud Nothings. Doesn't all work, but the short, sharp songs tumbling over each other, none outstaying their welcome, makes for good, fun listening.

The new Sleigh Bells track, "Comeback Kid" is pretty good too. One of their more Lush-esque type songs.

In the long run I think I may prefer last year's Cloud Nothings album but the new one will be an album of the year contender all year.

fun is so much better in theory than in practice - the songs are just not good, especially the melodies - and like the new weezer albums, make those old Format albums seem worse in retrospect. "Tonight we are young"? That's supposed to be a hook?

i really like lots of that album, but felt that partic track to be one of the weaker moments. 'minor keys' is probably the high point of that record for me

i was turned off by the singer's delivery for the most part but i think the disaffected and louche way he sings this gives it an ironic twist that really fits w/how sloppy and teenage the whole track is. like hes practically rolling his eyes on the 'uh-ohs' in a really bratty but appealing way

Saw Big Troubles supporting Ducktails last year, they weren't bad at all.

new beets album is good while sounding exactly like everything else they've ever done. not sure how they can keep recording the same song over and over and keep having it be good.

Man I actually thought the Nada Surf album was boring as fuck and borderline terrible, and I've generally been a fan. The entire album is just like one plodding tempo and never gives you any reason to care.

anyone heard of this band called Old Monk? their album is pretty enjoyable, in a steve malkmus poppy prog style. but no jams, all short songs.

lyrics and voice are malkmus-y too.

Liechtenstein album is sweet, judging by the first half. Had forgotten what a doozy of a track 'Meantime' is. I got the split tape with Twinkle Twinkles as well, really liked one track of theirs.

Heartless Bastards forthcoming LP is streaming on NPR atm. Seems a bit more restrained than 'The Mountain'. Reminds me a little of White Denim 'D'. I do love her voice tho.

I really enjoyed it albeit in a sub XTC manner. There are some fantastic songs on there.

I was briefly obsessed with Django Django's "Love's Dart" / "Storm" 7" but so far the album seems pleasant but not too exciting. All the tracks have sounded good popping up on random play, though.

The two Liechtenstein tracks on the split tape with Twinkle Twinkles are great, would've boosted the album a little.

Seeing Still Corners and My Sad Captains on Friday, two bands I've not seen for at least 3 years maybe, but really enjoyed last time out. Am intrigued to see how they've grown. Only heard the odd Still Corners thing despite them getting tangiably more of a big deal recently.

Django Django seemed pretty Beta Band-esque to me, but not really in a way that felt like it was filling a gap in my life that's been empty since 2004 or whenever.

Feel like what I've read about Standard Fare is something I'd like, but have not heard them yet. Is early Delgados anywhere near what they sound like? I could do with some of that.

Hm, the first video I found on Youtube (Fifteen (15)) sounded like how I think the Long Blondes sounded, maybe it's just a similar lyrical sentiment or something. Norman Records' review of the 2nd SF album almost had me throwing money at it but I was distracted by something else. I could probably grow to like it, I guess.

There's an indie press? SF seem like a band I could've seen maybe 20million times at various nights put on by friends of friends in the past couple of years but often I can't be bothered showing up. I don't know if there's an actual POPBAH-next level to step up to anymore, but the fact that I'm actively checking them out suggests they might be getting there.

I've known the singer for years. It's still a little bit strange for me to see people talking about them on ILM. Their reviews have tended to be positive, as far as i can tell, but i've never been sure how much attention they're picking up in the wider world.

some nice things out on hozac today. bare mutants 45 sounds like crystal stilts. the radar eyes LP is v nice too

camera obscura were the new belle and sebastian for a bit, allo darlin' seem more the new heavenly. they've supplanted a dormant pipas as the great white hope. i rather like them but i don't see them signing with 4ad until the 4th album. i think their new one is out soon right?

The new Standard Fare album took a while but proved itself a grower. First three tracks awesome from the go though. They are so great live.

Although it is difficult to stop oneself from substituting 'Danzig' for 'Dancing'.

Quite liking this new Wedding Present track. More than the "You Jane" single anyway.

This is exactly like the kind of cd I would've bought in 1995 for $2 in a cut-out bin because it looked neat or was on a cool label, and then I would listen to it once and never again. There's really no meat on this bone.

I couldn't disagree with that more, I've listened to that about 10 times so far and I keep going back for more. Its fantastic.

i've decided that new slumberland is just not for me. apart from the lodger I am not much for anything they have released in their new incarnation. it's all pretty decent but it doesn't seem like anything that bears repeated listening. but then i don't like anything on captured tracks either and everyone loves that stuff so maybe it has all passed me by.

for me CT has put out a lot of very very good records but nothing classic yet.

surprised you don't like gold bears and sea lions. seems like they'd be up your alley.

I have to agree - the LP does not live up to the promise of (the first release of, smdh) The Years. Also, why keep "Heirloom" for the LP but discard "Caregiver"?

oh yeah gold bears, i liked them. and of course i am looking forward to allo darlin but they aren't really a slumberland thing. but i listened to the devon williams and big troubles and it was meh. the new princeton record is pretty nice for rich guys making posh pop, one might have minor flashbacks of the push kings which may not be a good thing for many people. i think i may only like the lodger records because they remind of sneaky feelings.

Besides being a great Godz song, they're a great Chicago band who just released their self-titled album. "Miracle" is on it, though this is technically from the single from last October.

They're like a fuzzy hybrid of The Bats and Outrageous Cherry.

I tend of swing between cringing and loving Allo Darlin' lyrics. They're more of a guilty pleasure than most stuff I regularly listen to. The first album had its bland out moments but could still frequently make me feel giddy. Haven't given the newie much time.

Anyone here diggin' Joanna Gruesome? Their EP, and new track on a split on Art Is Hard Records are pretty great.

tbf it's really only two songs that piss me off lyrically - "europe" and "tallulah".. they come across like the typical expatriate australian who believes they've 'outgrown' their country and the people in it, while the whole album steals completely from the go betweens, the lucksmiths and the hummingbirds.

it's always australians who write these sort of dreadful lyrics, i can never work out why.

I really like 'Tallulah', I think it's more an age thing rather than an expatriate thing. She's late 20s and feels like her life's path has been determined. I don't think it's particularly disparaging of Australia (in so far as I've noticed anyway).

I like the increasing Go-Btwns influence, that's what makes 'Capricornia' one of the best things they've done whilst being less playful than some of their previous singles.

isn't 'tallulah' about finding a small piece of home anywhere? almost a recognition that even though she's far away, australia is always a part of her and the bit 'and i wonder if you'll wanna go over there with me, when i'm finished over here' seems like pining for home. she hardly seems the type to get worked up over.

Caught them live last night, they had a couple of stand-in members including the always-a-pleasure incongruously metal looking drummer. Were very good.

new Orca Team album is pretty darn lovely

Totally adore Orca Team, had the pleasure of putting on their first UK show and they were extremely good. They combine their influences supremely and Leif has a fantastic voice too.

I don't like the name, though on Friday I saw Haiku Salut who I'd avoided because I thought their name made them sound like some sort of 'Allo Darlin ukulele fest, but it turns out they're actually great. I feel pretty foolish.

Haiku Salut are lovely. I still have a soft spot for their previous band The Deirdres who I know were way over the twee line for a lot of people. Seeing Haiku Salut on Thursday, have only previously seen them through a church window at Indietracks, looking forward to it hugely.

Ugh, the Dierdres were awful. But yeah, HS seem a lot better. Still holding out for being able to watch a full gig inside the venue before I make up my mind properly...

HELP, trying to pin down an indie song I heard on local radio saturday morning. kind of highlife/jonny marr-esque guitar riff, chorus is something like "dont try something unless youre careful" (at least thats what it sounds like). im thinking its a well known indie act (thought it was two door cinema club but tis not) as the local station wouldnt play anything too obscure.

By The Sea are a treat to watch play as well, btw - there are rather a lot of them and they seem to have one guitarist whose job it is just to go "ding!" every now and again.

The Sweater Girls album is some kind of indiepop perfection! Was just coming here to post to that effect as well. Great to fall in love with a band from the first two 7"s then find the album's better than you hoped for.

Actually yeah, I wasn't entirely sure about them from the singles but on first listen the album is really really good.
