I voted for MindKilla but Glass Jar was an amazing statement piece. So few 'overture' style album openers are effective, but this one works both in context and on its own.

Selena was on my long list, but #77 is about right. Seems like a more polished* version of things (e.g. Britney) I've heard before.

the weird thing about "hell on heels" is that it's a total red herring for the album (while being an excellent single in its own right), but actually once you've heard the album it also makes complete sense, but in a very different way - kind of like you have to readjust the angle you're hearing it from.

my favourite bit is miranda's entrance, her voice raw like paint stripper - kind of the "HI WE REALLY MEAN THIS SHIT" moment

i fully expect hell on heels (the album) to place very highly

Love the harmonies on HOH mostly.

I avoided this album because of screenshots like that but eventually came around to it. "Powa" is a nice track.

Yeah I really hated tUnE-yArDs at first, based on her press pictures and the stupid spelling, but it really grew on me. Still nowhere near top ten or anything, but I've grown to appreciate what she's doing.

Absolutely. And Dan is also right about the effort that's gone into the structure of the music. The only time the album trips up and becomes willfully obtuse is "Riotriot". Lots more to say but I'll save it I think until when we get to the albums rundown.

Mogwai was my #2 and for the record the only Mogwai track to be found on my computer, the closing track on the only mogwai album I've ever heard so no commitment from me JF. Love this track tho.

Last track on Joy Formidable is my favourite but I voted for the album rather than any tracks off it.

This Junior Boys track is definitely pleasant but I'm not sure I'll return to it. I like how they seem to take the skin of an 80s pop song and pull and stretch it to fit over a cosmic disco skeleton.

My experience of country music is almost entirely reducible to my Dad's 8-tracks and K Rose from GTA SA.

My experience of country music is almost entirely reducible to the vast majority of the people I knew growing up who listened to it being unrepentant, irredeemable racists. Ironically, between this, the unrepentant racists into classic rock and the unrepentant racists into metal, I eventually ended up being into... industrial music.

the vocals remind me a lot of Kelley Polar - no processing, no reverb, just a guy singing. When it works it ratchets up the emotion and contrasts well with the electronics in the background. But when it doesn't work he can sound seriously awkward. There's a reason most artists slather their vocals in reverb.

Yeah this was the first Junior Boys album I was disappointed by. "Banana Ripple" was the best, but it was a low bar anyway.

they are really good live because they only play the fast tracks and pump up the volume so you can barely hear him singing. Not sure that speaks well of their music in general but I have enjoyed them both times I have seen them in person.

Last Exit is the most interesting and the best imo, at least it was at the time, with the whole combination of 2-step and Timbaland-style triple-kicks in an indie-electronica format. Johnny Dark was part of it for this one. Really fit into the general vibe of ILXOR as well, along with early music blogosphere. Nick Kilroy is part of this story as well.

So This Is Goodbye is somehow more consistent, but less adventurous. Still great though.

So This Is Goodbye is probably one of the five best albums of the last ten year, Last Exit isn't far behind.

I like the latest two Junior Boys albums but they just set the standard too high with the first two albums.

Agree with some of the comments about Gang Gang Dance, I had three of their songs on my long list but just couldn't decide between them so ended up bumping the album a little higher instead.

i am at work so i am just kinda grabbing listens when i can but the problem with that pistol annies song is that its a boring by the numbers lifeless plod done by fairly average singers that know all the right twangy country tropes to hit + faux lyrical empowerment through money grabs. its fucking dire.

i think it helped a lot that i could only find a version with no video, just the dense lyrics paraded in front of me.

I was forced because of where I worked to listen to country music radio for the greater part of the past six months. There's a lot to hate in country music even now, and DJP your impressions are not off at all, but it's definitely this experience that made me rank something like Sunny Sweeney's "From a Table Away" (which was top 3 for me but probably will not place) as a luminous masterpiece in songwriting.

That being said, the country radio station did not play a single Pistol Annies song the entire time I listened, which had me flummoxed until I actually listened to the album. The station I was listening to was def pushing a family-friendly, God-fearing, good people message, and Pistol Annies blasts through that. I actually think the down-homey-ness and the hewing to Nashville conventions makes the album sound tougher: less pretentious, gives it the illusion of rawness. Definitely it helps align the album with the 'outlaw country' tradition...

emil.y, I honestly think of "Hell on Heels" to be kind of a tokenist pick; it's the first song of the album, and though it works as a pop single, it functions within the album as sort of a program piece, an introductory gesture. If you want to find the punk in the album, check out "Housewife's Prayer" which sounds like a resigned sigh, but lyrically is a frustrated whelp of pyromaniac desire from the very heart of conventional domesticity. It's a stellar example as to why my country radio station wouldn't touch the album, and absolutely one of the top songs of the year (although I didn't vote for it ;_;)

A little late, but the thing I like about "Whirring" is that it's basically a shoegaze version of Tegan and Sara.

i like the kinda loping backing track, it's an interesting rhythm, but she needs to be more decisive about what to sing over it

There are bits of Barbara Panther's album that I like but as a whole it's a bit too full-on, she can be kind of irritating a lot of the time.

Anyway, nice to see "Moonlightpeople" make it this time (I nominated it last year too, since it first came out on a 2010 digital EP), though IMO "Unchained" is the true best song on the BP album (and somehow I forgot to nominate that one). If you remain sceptical about Panther, at least check out that tune, it kicks like a mule.

The synth hook on the 3BallMTY track is awesome, but the male vocalist sounds pretty generic (though of course I have no idea what he's saying), and the chorus sung by the woman feels like it belongs to a different, slower and less manic tune (nice chorus anyway).

invisible conga people was in my top 5. people who are hearing them for the first time should check out the rest of their discography (which is like four songs all equally good)

LOL at "Loituma (3ball Experimented)"... The vocal actually comes from a tune by a Finnish folk band called Loituma, it became some kind of an Internet meme a few years ago when someone attached it to a gif of an anime girl spinning a leek. There were bunch of those "techno remixes" you get with every meme around too, but this is by far the best remix I've heard.

It's a pretty funny story... I think the original meme was created by someone in Russia, and the song sample came from an obscure album that was released in the 1990s (the band itself is pretty obscure too, even in Finland). There was a news story in the local paper that Loituma were totally perplexed why all of sudden lots of people from different parts of the world were ordering the CD from their website, until they found out about the meme.

i absolutely love it "coming home" - it's pretty much the perfect close to the album, which provides the perfect context for its corniness. it kind of had to be that corny. i love diddy's verses! that "i hear _____, i hate/love that song" trick that starts each song is so effective - because he follows up each by telling us why he hates/loves it, and it's not some bs appeal to objectivity but exactly how it relates to his life

i didn't vote for it (i forgot it was a single this year) and it's neither the best nor the most representative song on the album but it's SO crucial to how LTTP works, i can't imagine dismissing it - if you don't love "coming home" you perhaps don't quite get LTTP imo

like, it's a triumphant homecoming (figurative if not literal) after the high drama & emotion of what's preceded it, it HAS to be overblown and corny and anthemic and redemptive, it couldn't be any other way!

"Coming Home" scored fewer points, please note ("Ass" got 222 and more votes). The spread of votes seems to be much wider this year. None of the charting tracks so far would have made the top 77 last year!

Anyway, no way is it the worst song on the album. Sounded great on rotation on the radio this year too.

I think the spotify list probably managed to bring to people more easy access to many of the tracks. With more of us having the ability to listen to more of the tracks in a way that was uncomplicated pragmatically meant that probably most of us went for diff't songs in the nominations list

Yay, my first vote to place! In campaigning I called it My #2 Bounciest Track of 2011 (after The Crystal Ark), and the year's winner of the Tensnake Award for Gratuitous Nostalgia-Pop Reference in a Remix, and that's still how I feel about it.

Voted for "Surgeon" - at first it felt like there's nothing there, yet all the bits and pieces of that nothing got stuck in my head for hours. I love that bleepy line behind the chorus.

They must be pretty giant in latin music circles (at least on the pop end), because I see a whole lot of their stuff come through here at work.

As for songs I've never heard before so far I love the production on the Barbara Panther track but wish her vocals were more concealed in the mix. Her voice is the least interesting thing going around.

'love you like a love song': this slipped off my ballot at the last minute, but i'm glad it made it in! i played it for my sister and she was convinced the chorus was "i love you like i loves a baby."

'hell on heels': the harmonies and the ambiance really clicked with me, even though i agree that, as an album-opener, it promised something that the rest of the album was not. my sense is that some think that's a good thing, like maybe the pose they're striking in this song is a bit hackneyed? but i genuinely dig it! tbf my familiarity with country is mostly limited to things ilx stans for, so i might be enjoying things that others consider tired tropes.

'bizness': voted for this because i thought it's where the consensus would gather, i've grown to love other tracks more (esp. 'my country'). tune-yards TOTALLY DOES IT for me, the everything + the kitchen sink production doesn't annoy me because it's still strongly melodic, and i don't mind the yawp (tho i think there's too much focus on the yawp in the critical conversation, she has a lovely gentle voice that gets a lot of album time too).

'moonlightpeople': i actually prefer the other nominated track 'dizzy' to this one ('dizzy' is tonally weird, it starts off buzzy and ominous and then veers into sweetness), but i got caught up in a barbara panther rush and ended up voting for both of them. my favorite discovery of the voting period, hands-down.

In case anyone was wondering: the breakdown of the ballots was 77 weighted, 24 unweighted and 21 mixed.

Also, I've just run the user stats and they underline the point that was already made about votes being much more spread out this year. This year's highest hivemind score (average points for tracks on a ballot) is 344, which would have put the voter in question at 9th in last years poll. Nobody has more than 16 tracks in the top 77 (last year the highest was 21).

On the other hand, the top 3 tracks this year have more points than last year's winner so it hasn't all gone crazy. Anyway, it's hard to posit a trend with just two years' information.

I don't think there have been as many absolute locks for the list as previous years, so no surprise it's more spread out. I mean, we know full well that Video Games, Countdown, Super Bass etc will turn up, but beyond maybe 10 or so absolute bankers it's wide open.

i found that was the case with my own ballot too - beyond a few bankers it was even more of a toss-up between, literally, 80-90 others. lots of the ones i've raved over here i didn't even vote for (but if i'd voted on another day i would have), like steffi/john talabot/selena gomez/tuccillo/big sean. actually i'm not sure any of my actual votes have shown up yet despite cosigning the majority of tracks so far!

Just looked and they're by Beyonce and Nicki Minaj who aren't really a part of my sphere, although I really enjoyed the Beyonce performance on Glastonbury footage and everything I've heard by Minaj I've very much enjoyed too, but yeah - I don't get to hear much radio pop in my day-to-day life as I don't drive and my work doesn't allow me to listen to music in the day and when I'm home it's mostly my own collection.

I think Kerr was saying something along these lines on the metal countdown. I don't read many of the rolling threads either for the reasons you mention and also because I can't watch YouTubes at work or on the train (no signal) and I fucking hate staring at YouTube vids on my computer at home, so threads with lots of in-jokes + YouTube videos are useless to me. If a single track or album's worth shouting about, start a thread IMO.

I dont have a problem with the metal thread, i never said that, i just mentioned that it is intimidating to a lot of ppl and they just dont read it. Which means a lot of stuff gets passed over.

haha. thing is, often when I do get to watch a Youtube it can impress me greatly. I don't think a track like Yonkers could have the kind of impact it did without the video, which encapsulates in three minutes what Goblin tries to do in 74. I'm always mourning the death of the album cover as visual signifier and yet I guess YouTube vids have replaced album artwork for this. I just can't be dealing with low-qual, rip-off and amateur vids, and I don't like the way you stare at a vid for 3 mins then have to load another one. Haven't got so far as trying to make a Youtube playlist. Maybe I should try. Would def use YouTube more if I could compile a bunch of vids and then let them play through in full screen without having to touch my mouse. Is that possible? If so that would rock.

damn, I'm so excited for the results! I'm happy to see so many tracks I didn't hear (or even hear of) before., makes me wonder where do they all come from, is it all those thousand posts long, impossible for me to follow rolling threads? "A$$ Remix" blew me away and got on a heavy repeat today, along with this 3BallMTY thing (the chorus sung by a lady - gorgeous). nothing from my ballot has scored yet, though.

xps - oh, glad I'm not the only one who dislikes rolling threads. makes me wish more notable songs would earn their own threads, maybe that would help a bit?

I was referring to when you said it was worth "campaigning" for tracks/albums outside of the metal thread because people from outside of it might be tempted to check it out. I grabbed a bunch of albums randomly out of the metal countdown and I'm quite enjoying them. But like you said, If Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats had been confined to Rolling Metal, us toe-dippers would be a lot worse off.

i dunno, i rarely watch youtube for music. although that could be that most just come w/ generic screenshots or just the album cover etc.

it is as incredible as a quik album. like all quik records. guy is a straight up genius, only wish i knew this 10 years ago and didn't have to cram in the past 2.

Yeah, I never read the rolling threads either, they feel to much like they're only for people "in the know", whereas I'm not following any genre closely enough anymore to really participate.

I didn't get around to going through the Spotify playlist for the nominated tracks but that's ok, there were already more than enough familiar things to choose from and it felt kind of right to vote for the songs I'd been loving all year. I did pick up some good stuff from the albums list though!

I voted for this. When it first came out, I thought it was another case of Nicki lifting up a bad song. Then I heard the original version come on the radio. Even though I felt like a toddler who had his candy stolen when the second verse came on, I realized that it's still a jam in Nicki's absense. She just pushes it over the top. Please note: this is not a defense of Big Sean, who raps like Farnsworth Bentley.
