Well, I don't know anticipate is the right word because 3/4 of the tracks are already released as singles, but the other six, wow, they're all aces.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et65Bo_B5aghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6aJS7phhaEhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9varB4B1dTg
But their best work is still "Moondance" from 2010https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9dpLA2qjtA
Also check out their great mix for Fact:http://www.factmag.com/2012/01/16/fact-mix-312-blondes/

love "you mean so much to me" from Touched. "pleasure" is the favourite from the new stuff i've heard.
when's the album out?
― misty sensorium (Plasmon), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 05:03 (fourteen years ago)
feb 7th. the wine/water 12" is amazing. i was a huge fan of the ep on merock but i kinda slept on the stuff on rvng so ive only picked it up recently but 'wine' is just a jammmm
― # (Lamp), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 05:06 (fourteen years ago)

the panning. THE PANNING!!!

Hmm, wondering now if i should take a train ride to London to see them next month.

Just noticed this after posted the Wine clip to hipster house thread, but was unsure if it belonged there. I like the new single and the Bicep remix, the FACT mix is pretty great in terms of mapping out their sound and some influences.
There's a chance to see them in a couple of weeks here, I'm going to try and check them out. I suspect they might make quite a bit of sense live.

― Tim F, Sunday, 19 February 2012 13:28 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, it's great. Been jamming to this all day. Some of the track I hadn't heard before. Love the fireworks crackling explosions on Amber.
Haven't made it to the remix disk yet, other than the Robert Miles track above, which I honestly had much higher hopes for.
― MikoMcha, Sunday, 19 February 2012 14:16 (thirteen years ago)
The Business/Pleasure pairing is absolutely perfect, and the rest is really solid too. Haven't got round to all the remix disc but I'm totally feeling the Bicep remix.
― boxedjoy, Sunday, 19 February 2012 19:52 (thirteen years ago)
This is officially the least stealable band name ever. They couldn't have made it any harder to find if they'd called themselves Paris Hilton Sex Tape.
― Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Sunday, 19 February 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)
This albums! So sweeping, so brooding! It strikes me as an odd coincidence that this and the Talabot album have come out at the same time because they both are like extended paeans to the build.
I think it's on "Pleasure" (though I may be wrong) where about halfway through this gorgeous piano riffing section emerges... while we're not in Marshall Jefferson territory by any stretch it still feels like this massive moment of rightness, like the entire universe has deemed this moment mandatory.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 22:07 (thirteen years ago)
This albums!
― Tim F, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 22:08 (thirteen years ago)
Lover is a great song, but Pleasure is where it really starts kicking off.
Do agree with this from the first post though:
But their best work is still "Moondance" from 2010
― Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 22:28 (thirteen years ago)
I think the Blondes-Talabot link is so clear, they're very similar albums texturally as well as structurally.
― boxedjoy, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 23:02 (thirteen years ago)
ha, yea i was surprised at how well that robert miles remix turned out but i def wouldn't say it's my favorite of the bunch. the teengirl fantasy mix is p striking, and i'm also really feeling stirmonster's remix of "lover" that plays the melody from don cherry's "brown rice" against the original song's meredith monk sample.
this is definitely one of my favorite releases of the year so far, along with the talabot disc. i don't remember "pleasure" for the piano lines per se but more because of the somewhat unexpected lissvik-style balearic synth-guitar flourishes that pop up and make me sad that this is probably the closest we will ever come to another "life's a beach". tho that sadness quickly dissipates because it's an incredible track in it's own right
― psychgawsple, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 23:26 (thirteen years ago)
this album is LOVELY.
i have no idea how i hadn't even heard of them until yesterday when a friend recommended them in response to a "where is all the decent music this year" whinge - though a search did reveal that i'd just ignored the press email and d/l links a few months ago, presumably due to the boring name or maybe the douchey press release. this is so much more anonymous than i'd have thought and all the better for it
― lex pretend, Thursday, 23 February 2012 09:07 (thirteen years ago)
finally listened to this all the way through (via trans-pacific flight). It's really really nice, but I kind of wish it was a little more of a continuos, monolithic thing (instead of 8 separate tracks) it's like, so close. def one of the best things I've heard all year though.
gotta dip in to the remixes next.

So close as to barely matter: everything else.

― MikoMcha, Thursday, 23 February 2012 12:25 (thirteen years ago)

Do they have other tunes called 'Yachts', 'Cocaine' and 'Secretaries'?
― Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Thursday, 23 February 2012 13:16 (thirteen years ago)
Actually, each of the original 12" gathered together in the album was arranged by a ying/yang theme: lover/hater, business/pleasure, water/wine, gold/amber.

The Wine-Water pairing is definitely my favourite. Wine sounds like Layo & Bushwacka's Love Story refracted again and again and again, it's such a corny everyone-hug-each-other dancefloor moment but it completely works.

There's something about these guys that reminds me of one of Lex's posts from last year where he was wishing for a dancier version of Emeralds. They don't quite have that depth or complexity to their sound (and heck, no Mark McGuire in the band either), but maybe this is a manifestation of that sort of way of thinking?
― Feebs K-Tel (NickB), Friday, 2 March 2012 11:56 (thirteen years ago)

― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 2 March 2012 12:04 (thirteen years ago)
it took me a while to work out why this album massively impressed, but seemed like a bit of a drag.. it's because the second half is so much better than the first, so takes a while to get going. I only really listen from Wine onwards n/days
― merked, Friday, 2 March 2012 13:10 (thirteen years ago)
it's because the second half is so much better than the first, so takes a while to get going

― MikoMcha, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 13:39 (twelve years ago)
Enjoyed it a lot. There's maybe a bit of a change in tone from the last one iirc in that a couple of tracks on this one seem a bit more *serious face*, but if anything that just adds to the journey. Good record!
― dschinghis kraan (NickB), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 13:46 (twelve years ago)
Reminding me a lot of Selected Ambient Works 85-92 on first listen - or the long-form deep trance version of same (whereas Actress' R.I.P. was like the skittery sketches version).
― Tim F, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 13:50 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, I'll need some time with it obviously, but my impressions are that it's all really cut from the same sonic palette, even more than the last record.

Would make sense as the last one was a collection of 12"s
― dschinghis kraan (NickB), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 13:58 (twelve years ago)
My understanding is that they're a live act in significant ways as well, so they must have a fairly circumscribed kit.

Should check out the Blondes RA podcast the dancefloor tip: http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?id=375. Maybe not quite as good as the FACT mix from last year, but Bora Bora and Swisher sound great here. They also unlock the power of Stellar Om Source and Laurel Halo for a club set.

Yeah, so they were really great. Oceanic. Like Arthur Russell, 90's trance ('taking you on a journey') mixes, Porter Ricks...
Played versions of stuff from the albums along with more open-ended jams. Elise was an obvious highlight.
― MikoMcha, Sunday, 8 September 2013 10:52 (twelve years ago)
Would have liked to hear them tackle Wine, but no dice.
― MikoMcha, Sunday, 8 September 2013 10:54 (twelve years ago)
starting to think Swisher is the best thing they've done. picked up the vinyl + digital over the weekend. it really is deep ... Porter Ricks reference is otm but they bring melody into it too.
on track 2 when it gets into that high shrieky buildup of static toward the last third of the track ... wow.
― dmr, Monday, 9 September 2013 16:39 (twelve years ago)
Yeah that's amazing. I think the album is better the more stentorian it gets, even if it's just because it's difficult to top the debut in the melancholic sweeping grandeur stakes.

I totally forgot to add to the enthusiasm of NickB after playing this. It's not got anything as good as "Elise" on it but I think this might be their best full album yet.

New album is amaze, but I find it interesting how much its concision feels like a reaction to the expansive drift of Rein. There’s something almost “right, let’s get to it” to the way they start and finish the tracks.
Also feels very “if you only buy one Blondes album...”

It really is.
One of my favourite albums of this year is Puscha’s Etterath, which despite being less beat driven has a very pronounced Blondes feel.
