Matt Armstrong, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:16 (thirteen years ago)

curmudgeon, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:17 (thirteen years ago)

wonder how Dave feels about Maroon 5 and Foster the People helping Brian Wilson sound more real.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2012 02:17 (thirteen years ago)

during his speech. it was perfect. also fuck him for dismissing fancy studios and computers but thanking "the best producer in the world" in the same sentence.

teledyldonix, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:18 (thirteen years ago)

He would like to thank Alan Moulder, who produced Smashing Pumpkins using tin cans and an exact-o-blade instead of computers to mix the record.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2012 02:19 (thirteen years ago)

Foster The People >>>> Maroon 5 at this Beach Boys covers kitsch

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2012 02:20 (thirteen years ago)

was that Sting standing up?

owenf, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

gotta say yeah, Foster the People guy's voice was perfect for that song.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

how the fuck did Arcade Fire age so badly?????

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2012 02:23 (thirteen years ago)

who is Foster the People?

JacobSanders, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:24 (thirteen years ago)

Levine looks really uncomfortable with this whole situation.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:24 (thirteen years ago)

Mike Love appears to keep threatening Glenn Campbell in audience.

Hadrian VIII, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:25 (thirteen years ago)

Maura:

9:19 p.m. And now Foster the People is doing "Wouldn't It Be Nice," transposed into a different key that's just making everything sound extra-awkward. I guess the backing vocals are nice, but the lead Person's voice is just not suited to this particular song. It's too... quacky? Is "quacky" the right word? My mind is conjuring up a duck when listening to him.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2012 02:25 (thirteen years ago)

Baha hair guy bumping into M. Love while praying or meditating or whatever that was

Hadrian VIII, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:26 (thirteen years ago)

That Mike Love, whatta guy. Brian is clearly somewhere else, or wishes he was. Poor fella.

wolf cola, everyone (thewufs), Monday, 13 February 2012 02:27 (thirteen years ago)

that's how he's looked in every performance for 30 years

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:29 (thirteen years ago)

So that was my first time to hear the foo fighters, I'm really surprised at how run of the mill the music is. I thought it would be more...I dunno something, I mean he was in a good band once. Wearing a Slayer shirt doesn't hide the bad music.

JacobSanders, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:31 (thirteen years ago)

Fulfillingness First Grammys!

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2012 02:32 (thirteen years ago)

Why the hell isn't Stevie performing for real? Fuck. He should host.

wolf cola, everyone (thewufs), Monday, 13 February 2012 02:33 (thirteen years ago)

Why is Macca in a straitjacket?

Hadrian VIII, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:34 (thirteen years ago)

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2012 02:34 (thirteen years ago)

Joe Walsh doing G.E. Smith Serious Guitar Hero muscle flexing.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2012 02:35 (thirteen years ago)

If Stevie wasn't so amazingly talented he would be really, really creepy

owenf, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:35 (thirteen years ago)

Hadrian VIII, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:37 (thirteen years ago)

actually fuck off Chris Brown

owenf, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:38 (thirteen years ago)

ignoring chris brown to wonder why the girl from the civil wars is a future entertainment tonight host

if you ever leave me peggy, leave some propane at my door (zachlyon), Monday, 13 February 2012 02:39 (thirteen years ago)

so a guy beats on his girl, performs the same show as her and wins a grammy?

JacobSanders, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:40 (thirteen years ago)

Taylor's making all this seem worthwhile

owenf, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:41 (thirteen years ago)

lol banjos = dustbowl nightgown

Hadrian VIII, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:41 (thirteen years ago)

So that was my first time to hear the foo fighters, I'm really surprised at how run of the mill the music is

I'm surprised how a band gains more fans with no songs

People who became FF fans with the 00s material are the weirdest on earth

Master of Treacle, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:41 (thirteen years ago)

Didn't Taylor use that same set on another award show?

curmudgeon, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:42 (thirteen years ago)

Why does Chris Brown gotta be so mean?

owenf, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:43 (thirteen years ago)

Ye Olde Tyme White People Revue

Hadrian VIII, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:43 (thirteen years ago)

Didn't Taylor use that same set on another award show?

Oh. Is this her schtick?

Hadrian VIII, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:45 (thirteen years ago)

She wears her old-timey depression era dress and uses that set for her banjo numbers, it seems

curmudgeon, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:48 (thirteen years ago)

Mike Love's been wearing that same baseball cap for decades

curmudgeon, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:49 (thirteen years ago)

Adele should pull out her chewing gum and put it on the trophy

curmudgeon, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:52 (thirteen years ago)

Paul Epworth is a genuinely nice dude

owenf, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:52 (thirteen years ago)

are they really redoing Total Recall?

JacobSanders, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:54 (thirteen years ago)

ugh that voice

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:56 (thirteen years ago)

she's very sibilant tonight

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:57 (thirteen years ago)

what the fuck is going on

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2012 02:57 (thirteen years ago)

Why doesn't she just lip sync at these shows? I mean, compared to this, Rihanna is Aretha Franklin.

wolf cola, everyone (thewufs), Monday, 13 February 2012 02:57 (thirteen years ago)

Every time I hear that one Katy Perry song (E.T.?), it just makes me want to listen to tATu.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:58 (thirteen years ago)

oh fuck if Paltrow sings I'm gonna kill myself

owenf, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:05 (thirteen years ago)

phew

owenf, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:06 (thirteen years ago)

Bullet dodged.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:06 (thirteen years ago)

would have been funny if Paltrow had gone on for ages about 'that voice' etc then it turned out she was talking about herself and launched into 'forget you' again

owenf, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:09 (thirteen years ago)

for like 1 second I mean

owenf, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:09 (thirteen years ago)

Paltrolled

bnw, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:10 (thirteen years ago)

Adele owning this really. Hard to hate, even if I have heard this song 10 times a day for months.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:10 (thirteen years ago)

Why wasn't Glen Campbell on stage with the Beach Boys?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:11 (thirteen years ago)

I think Mike Love wouldn't allow him up there.

Looked like Rihanna was trying to communicate with Adele telepathically.

curmudgeon, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:12 (thirteen years ago)

Adele sounded flat imo

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2012 03:13 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, but when the bar is set at Rihanna and Katy Perry and even Taylor Swift, Adele is Aretha.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:13 (thirteen years ago)

Swift was fine!

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2012 03:14 (thirteen years ago)

She was! It's just easy to make fun of her.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:15 (thirteen years ago)

i love rihanna so much

she did the WILLIE BOUNCE during her performance

she is just perfect.

Peace (peaceful) (The Brainwasher), Monday, 13 February 2012 03:16 (thirteen years ago)

Adele always sounds a little flat, but that was pitched down a half step so she actually sounded more relaxed and comfortable singing that than I've ever heard her before.

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Monday, 13 February 2012 03:16 (thirteen years ago)

Adele did own in comparison. But yeah she did sound a little unlike Adele to me. dunno. this stream is pretty shit.

owenf, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:17 (thirteen years ago)

yeah Adele's performance was very tempered.

Peace (peaceful) (The Brainwasher), Monday, 13 February 2012 03:17 (thirteen years ago)

The tribute John Hartford never got....

Lee626, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:18 (thirteen years ago)

owenf, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:18 (thirteen years ago)

meanwhile over on the NPR live blog of this, from earlier:

Naturally, I'm pulling for Bon Iver, given that I freaking love Bon Iver.

curmudgeon, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:19 (thirteen years ago)

by the way, Chris Brown can fucking die

just thought I'd throw that out there

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Monday, 13 February 2012 03:20 (thirteen years ago)

Liking these Campbell tributes. Country cats got class.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:20 (thirteen years ago)

Brian Wilson is in the audience.... Glen should sing "Guess I'm Dumb", which isn't on the setlist on his farewell tour.

Lee626, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:21 (thirteen years ago)

adele sounded worse than usual i think. but she hasn't been performing lately, so i guess it is excusable

teledyldonix, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:23 (thirteen years ago)

owenf, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:41 (thirteen years ago)

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:41 (thirteen years ago)

Huh, didn't know Milton Babbitt or Gary Moore died.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 February 2012 03:42 (thirteen years ago)

Bon Iver manages to give Adult Contemporary a bad name. But of all the other choices for best new artist he was hardly the worst (and I strongly dislike his music).

Oh well.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2012 12:03 (thirteen years ago)

I thought Ringo was going to show up too. Wish he'd picked a better song. And I'm still puzzling out why Joe Walsh was up there.

Nicki Minaj was preposterous beyond words. I mean, there's a part of me that can appreciate audacity for audacity's sake, but when your mind starts drifting back to Rick Wakeman and Meat Loaf and stuff like that, that's not really a good thing. If the song's any good, I'm okay with pretty much anything, but the song was awful!

clemenza, Monday, 13 February 2012 13:00 (thirteen years ago)

Also, Lauryn Hill performed at the Grammys in 1999, right? Why are ppl claiming Nicki is the first solo female emcee to perform on the Grammys?

"Stupid Hoe" would have been so much better. I don't mean to come across as a drudge. Usually I think Nicki Minaj is great. It was just such a horrible song.

jaymc, Monday, 13 February 2012 13:59 (thirteen years ago)

It was a great disaster that sounded horrible and was neither visually nor narratively coherent. Basically, delivered as promised. Though I bet even Gaga was a little non-plussed if not outright bored watching it. I know I was.

did hill do anything other than "to zion" at the '99 with carlos santana? what i saw of that it was just singing - first solo mc to mc at least.

i didn't even like minaj before this, aside from some remixes, but she sold me - grabbed it / took it / ran with it, that was an all-caps PERFORMANCE, i literally forgot how stale and desperately clinging for relevance this show is for those five minutes, forgot about everything really. is the original track "roman's holiday" as it was in that? the beat was sick - i kept looking for kingdom or other night slugs crew behind a dj booth.

i'm not "invested" in roman but unlike sasha fierce and whatever gaga's male alter ego is, it's a character that actually has a tangible effect on minaj's material. characters and alter egos are par for the course in pop, i kind of admire it when someone commits to one.

the grammy's would be so much better if @LILBTHEBASEDGOD interrupted every performance

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 February 2012 15:34 (thirteen years ago)

xp: well, it's not like she was doing a Katy Perry/Jessie J contraloblast all over the song; JHud showed me last night that she is, in my opinion, the best female singer out there right now in the pop/R&B scene. Not only was she able to sing that song while on the verge of tears, she was able to do so while switching back and forth between her head voice and her belt, with breath support intact, and with all of the emotions inside of her pouring through the song. It was a clinic in how to sing.

i watched the chris brown performance only out of a dance interest and it was lame, thought it was cute that rihanna's team outdid his on tha - of course none of that mattered once the minaj team took stage - turns out the choreographer was laurieann gibson who's done most of lady gaga's videos - i've never cared for gaga's music but i do sit through them for the choreo, this gibson person is on point

Laurie Ann Gibson is totally insane but is a great choreographer

so massively indifferent to big choreographed performances... I sorta wish someone would just sit on stage at the Grammys with an amplified blender or something and not sing. it'd be a lot cheaper, and it would sound a lot cooler than Chris Martin or The Deadmau Five.

Quest has that massive collection of Soul Train episodes that he has blogged about showing to other musicians, so the Grammys must have done a bait and switch on him--ok you can do the farewell to Don Cornelius but hey while you're up there can you then introduce these other folks. And no, we are not gonna make time to show any footage of old Soul Train episodes-- we need to show Dave Grohl a few more times.

Christgau kinda agrees with lex:

Just watched the Grammys start to finish for the first time since I wrote about them for the VV the year Elton met Eminem. I agree they were bizarre, but mostly because they were so death-oriented: Whitney Houston of course, but also the Beach Boys' none-too-sentient-reunion (Brian bravely hanging in there he knew not why), the not-Beatles-but-Abbey-Road guitar jam saying goodbye to a moribund way of making music (although it was pretty good, Bruce and Sir P especially, and gotta admit Dave Grohl was better than that meaningless album or the FFs' utterly silly cameo in the weird dance segment would make you expect), and of course Glen Campbell (movingly) living out the nightmare of every old person with a brain in America--an entire industry was gazing at its future. I thought the Minaj segment was a mess, unfortunately--was really looking forward to it. Would never have believed I'd root for Radiohead to win the rock award, either.

"though sadly not off the earth"? Really? It's clear no one edits these things, but tell me: is that supposed to be funny? Are we all supposed to hi-five you after the brilliant turn that phrase took? Most of your blogposts are snarky, irresponsible, ill-informed, or risible ("MIA is the most important artist of the oughts"), but this one is all of them. I'm done reading your "criticism", as I suspect are those sensible people who aren't subject to the New Yorker's gravity well. No critic more than you unwittingly dramatizes Martin Mull's statement about writing, music, dancing and architecture. Look it up.

I should of realized that her hair was bleached but I guess I figured pop stars wouldn't be so ghetto

― rubber belly hand necker (CaptainL0rax)

I take back this statement. I worded it badly.

Furthermore of course her hair was bleached, regardless of race.
I had a fuzzy memory of what nicky minaj looked like because any picture tells that she had bleached hair. The first time I saw her was New Years fwtw

Pretty good show on the whole this year, but 3 1/2 hours is too long.

timellison, Monday, 13 February 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

hey, Oscars are still about that long, and don't have nearly as many musical performances

some dude, Monday, 13 February 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

Well, this year they don't have any.

jaymc, Monday, 13 February 2012 20:47 (thirteen years ago)

I'm sort of torn between being glad that the Grammys offer so much spectacle and being annoyed that the broadcast ignores dozens of winners in non-televised categories in favor of two Foo Fighters performances.

jaymc, Monday, 13 February 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

they should make all of the nominees of a category play a medley before announcing the winner

The bonnybear report on hispterrunoff is hilarious.

Recent research in the field has been pretty much definitely attributed the dancing about architecture quote to Martin Mull

Number None, Monday, 13 February 2012 21:09 (thirteen years ago)

oh boy he says 'coloreds' ironically, how hilarious and edgy

some dude, Monday, 13 February 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

haha i posted the why-is bon iver on my facebook and it got lumped in with X amount of friends' posts fawning over bon iver

fauxmarc, Monday, 13 February 2012 21:14 (thirteen years ago)

a girl at work said Adele's name like 'a-dell-ee' this morning, which is crazier if not funnier than 'bonny bear'

some dude, Monday, 13 February 2012 21:15 (thirteen years ago)

i was all excited to have found that bonnie bear vid and carles posted it first I JUST CAN'T WIN

I just saw the condensed highlights of this and thought - Grammys, you done good.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 01:46 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, any TV show that holds out the prospect of Tony Bennett pretending to be happy for Skrillex has something going for it.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 01:47 (thirteen years ago)

I also loved how assiduously INDIE the Bon Iver guy was trying (and mostly succeeding) to be.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 14 February 2012 01:52 (thirteen years ago)

Are you guys pronouncing in Bone-y Bear too?

Evan, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 02:02 (thirteen years ago)

I'm sure if the Pope saw the Minaj debacle even he would have been all wtf?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 02:02 (thirteen years ago)

i was listening to the baltimore rap station the way home and one of the DJs says that j cole and nicki minaj lost a grammy to "the swedish band bon iver" (pronounced like it rhymes with 'liver')

I totally fell for Adele. She was humble and off-hand and gracious and loose. When she got her trophies it was like a joke she was sharing with us.

(I'm probably not the first to say this, but I hear "Hot Stuff" in "Rolling in the Deep" just as much as "Gimme Shelter"..)

Contrast with the guy from Bon Ee-VARE who, despite his multiple insinuations that most of the real deserving artists weren't at the Grammys, would never be at the Grammys, you could see had worked himself up into feeling this was a real Moment of Great Importance, and was taking it very seriously. Watching him I almost felt that he was talking to the principal, explaining that he wasn't sorry for passing that note to Sally, because he meant every word of it.

LL did a great job. I was impressed with how quickly they changed the show.

I loved the retro 70s set. Was it deliberately supposed to echo Soul Train? In any case it looked great.
