I've liked DJ Q for years, I just didn't start checking for him obsessively until recently.

DJ Q as a "thing" post the golden age of bassline is something that has seeped into popular consciousness only over the past 18 months I'd say.

In particular the melting pot of bassline, 2-step and grime (with smatterings of dubstep, old school house, funky etc) that his dj sets from the last few years basically define.

Also I wasn't accusing you personally of being a new jack, Rev, DJ Q's rep has exploded in general over about the last 6 months in particular.

One thing I love about this scene (and it was true in the early days of funky as well) is how totally random (but awesome) outsider tunes become massive anthems. Maya Jane Coles' "what they say" being a good example.

Oh no "what they say" isn't an Organ anthem, haha. Maya makes euro deep house and occasionally dubstep. But it feels like an organ anthem in this context. It's an inadvertent resonance perhaps.

Organ, as such, seems both part of this scene and also apart from it, slightly, in the sense that there are Organ DJs who would never touch the harder stuff that DJ Q plays. Though really the same is true of all the scene's constituent parts so that probably doesn't mean much.

I've also found myself gravitating towards that lovely nexus of bassline, grime, funky, and all the techno-y and housey bits of dubstep as of late. It almost feels like lots of things are moving in this direction. Maybe its just me.

it's quite interesting seeing what's "in" and what's outside the nexus of the above stuff - it's not just a quality issue either, some housey post-dubstep I adore would sound very out of place in a DJ Q mix whereas other stuff I like but less enthusiastically feels like a perfect fit (and tends to sound much better in that context than in isolation).

Getting more play in a variety of DJ sets in a variety of (obv really close together) genres, getting lots of critical attention (including stuff like doing DJ mixes for magazines), tunes seeming to get a (relatively) high sales results on juno etc, releases on more critically respectable labels...

yeah i can't think 1Xtra feels too great now about being 1's "sister station"

thing is 1xtra ought to be the sister station though, hauling it out of its ghetto and positioning the station like that was its great success of recent years - and besides, the landscape has changed and blurred enough so the two's remit has grown closer anyway. (you could even argue 1xtra has had a direct role in shaping that). but a sister should have a vibrant life of her own and not be hostage to the brother the way it looks like it'll be now.

getting back to the subject of q, i just can't stress enough how much of a travesty it is him leaving and cameo getting to stay on as garage tsar. why is this the one time the old dj gets to stay on? there's nothing q can't do that cameo can - q is an exceptional grime dj on the sly and has all the contacts just the same (especially as grime booms outside of london), he is the hot thing in the clubs, he produces excellently and has the media coverage, and his sets include, encompass and reinvent every facet of ukg new and old. i could go on. it's just terrible.

did any of you ever actually listen to his show btw cos i never really got that impression

i did, but not as much as i would have liked! it's frustrating because i don't listen to the radio at that time of night so "play again" was really the only way, but sitting at my desk is not the usual place i listen to music.. a self-expiring 7-day podcast would be ideal for shows like this but afaik that technology doesn't exist for that exactly

I suspect DJ Q's crossover to FACT types is very much tied up with the extent to which he appears to free himself from the shackles of bassline, and this is the probably the least bassline (non radio) set I've heard from him.

By no longer being grounded in any one sound (especially one which is so loaded with geographical and timeline specificity as bassline) its mix of 2-step and non-bassline-but-bass-driven thug tunes and house and etc. reads - or at least can be read - as a street reflection of the collage party principle that motivates most of post-dubstep (and certainly its tropical / "funky" end).

I don't want to harsh the buzz though b/c this is a fab mix obv.

I don't think you can really collapse all of these approaches together - so much of the artfulness is tied up in where the DJ/producer thinks the lines are. It's what gives the scribble meaning and definition.

It goes back to what I was saying in the bubblers thread about a kind of plasticky high-contrast sensibility - I'll quote the relevant post when I'm not writing on my phone.

But a pretty key distinction from a lot of 'scribblers' is that dj q is not really in dialogue with us hip hop or r&b at all.

Except in the circuitous sense of recreating past uk quotations of us source material (e.g. 2step remixes of Brandy).

Here's that post:

I think the real demarcation these days is less between abstract vs songful and more along production values lines.

This is where a distinction between say 1999 garage and 2001 garage really makes sense, the earlier stuff still retaining a kind of vinyl warmth and almost-"deepness" and the later stuff sounding like the contrast has been turned up - heavier but more plasticky beats, exaggerated bass but also exaggerated treble... a generalised air of hyperreality.

This (rather than pop vs abstraction or lightness vs heaviness) is probably the key point of distinction between "future garage" and the stuff that Q plays, only it's even more extreme now, future garage being "deep" to the point where it has to shun anything that might interfere with that, and the Q interzone retaining (albeit as a kind of reigning principle rather than a clearly defined sonic property) the sickly harshness of bassline.

Picking up on r|t|c's jamiroquai/zero 7 references, even the more tasteful parts of DJ Q's sound have a kind of trebly artificiality (and perhaps superficiality) to them - the signifiers rather than the "substance" of tastefulness.

I like the throwback postbassline mix for playing in the car. I'm less sure about the other, but I need to give it a driving listen as well. I generally like what's happening with the beats in this stuff but the vocal part of it is usually more iffy for me (though I generally like the distortion they are put through). I had just been playing Tropical 2, one my of my main rainy day driving choices, in the car, before I saw this thread yesterday, so that was the context. I still prefer that to just about any of this related stuff. Would love to have more in that precise vein.

I'm going to spend forever racking my brain to figure out what the sample is in DJ Q - "Everytime". I feel like it's something I haven't heard in years, but that one vocal run is so recognizable, if not placable.

The synths remind me a lot of the Dreem Teem Original Dub Mix of Neneh Cherry's "Buddy X", but not sure otherwise.

Xxpost agreed, I've just been listening to the may one more in the past few weeks for obvious reasons.

And benny, I agree - the perfect length and much more accessible. Though maybe a step down for people who were getting a weekly fix before.

I only started to listen to the 1xtra show about a year before it ended (not every week i admit). Obviously it was a peerless show but I like the concentrated 1 hour hit and it means i'm replaying and getting more out of them. This no-chat format also really highlights his mixing skills more and puts him centre-stage. Plus the guy's workrate outside of radio is so fierce, can't say I've felt a lack of Q in my life since the MOS show started so i'm happy.

i'd imagined losing the weekly fix would be a terrible loss but actually it's been really rewarding spending a bit longer marinating on each mix and getting into some close reading. (ok i probably wouldnt say no to fortnightly...)

i guess in retrospect q's 1xtra departure could be seen to be serendipitous as from then on garage has diffused out into ubiquity whilst simultaneously losing its core heartland to some extent - everywhere but nowhere. "essential garage" becomes aptly named under q's direction - not simply an exercise in (superbly) mixing together whatever's around at the moment but an ideological treatise on garageness itself, and rather than retreat back to basics to make the point like everyone else he instead approaches it by taking in even more of the surrounding ecology as possible and intuitively teases out the bubbling thread running through

Is there a vibier sound to drop into the mix in 2013 than the glassy organ intro of MK's remix of "What Love Is Made Of"? I suspect not.

On this (old? how old is this?) "Classified" DJ Mag mix, this part with "say you're not gonna let me go" and all the jazzy guitar is just amazing. I realize how unreasonable the idea is, but I'd love to hear a whole mix with wall to wall jazz guitar (something I mostly don't like in its pure form).

At the sweet spot of replays of this set where every tune sounds like the most amazing relavatory thing ever crafted by human hands.

mixmag gave the C&A one away free on their site but rather annoyingly the dl link doesn't work.

Would agree that Lil' Silva feels like the key reference point for the harder sections of the July set (can't speak to subsequent entries yet) - esp. that run of "Better Off As Friends", "Living Like I Do" and "Your Drums, Your Love", such a compelling vision of post-apocalyptic dance-pop, the harshness and sweetness slashing into one another rather than cancelling each other out.

yeah in all honesty i think silva's is probably the most otherworldly sui generis vision anywhere right now, like you're genuinely talking about something beyond evolved accreted sensibility, a preternatural beauty so savage yet estrangingly calm and lucid

'post-apocalyptic' is right, kinda on some ballard shit pretty much, flesh-eating orchids flowering in the middle of bitterly brutalist urban abstract utopia

banks 'work' and his mix of london grammar 'metal & dust' also urgent & key (the latter is weirdly scarce, might have to youtube it up myself at some point actually)

that dostracks mix is really rather good isn't it? Quite downtempo for Q. A few quite obvious/old tunes on there that I was nevertheless delighted to hear again when put together like this. Personally I love the MK dubs in any situation but the ejeca ones I've heard have bored me a bit when listened to outside of a q set.

My sense is that this sound operates according to a different logic again, a molecular one, as if the idea of the bubbler has become necessarily a covalent relationship between two different impulses - building on comments above, maybe Lil' Silva's scorched earth rigidity and the warm bounciness of MK. Arguably everything else Q draws for, even if sounding quite different to both, can be expressed as falling somewhere within that axis.

Although he’s been releasing club tracks since the start of the ‘00s, DJ Q had his breakthrough moment in 2008 with ‘U Wot’, one of the biggest tracks to come out of the UK’s bassline house / Niche explosion. The years since have seen him hold down residencies on BBC Radio 1xtra and Ministry of Sound Radio, while releasing on Butterz, Unknown to the Unknown and Local Action. He’s picked up some impressive admirers along the way too – DJ EZ, Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy and Skrillex have all shown their admiration for Q in recent years.

Ineffable follows four singles for Local Action (including the instant sell-out ‘Brandy & Coke’) and – let’s get this straight – is a pop record, albeit a pop record raised on MJ Cole, Todd Edwards, French touch and grime. This is 21st century pop music the way it should sound: at times devoted and at times desolate, sexually charged and made for the night.

That is my story, though in my case it's more that I basically only listen to music while en route or at the gym now and the bbc app won't work in Australia.

This little change at around 8:50 (during "Mind Reader") in the 9/12/2013 (British style) is the kind of thing that kills me in these mixes. I don't know how unique it is, but I love it and as soon as I heard it I thought about how good it would sound in the car. I think driving around with these mixes has had a lot to do with my absorbing them.

Drop Lamond's "Feeling High" (in the Boxing Night set) is one of those tunes that starts off seeming understated but turns out to be crazy and crazy good.

Love when these mixes go polyphonic.

And it's an abstraction of an abstraction (music) or an extraction of an extraction. If music is a distilation of life, and then you distill that distillation? If someone gets that right (at least for a given listener--hello!), it's super potent. Rather than Plato's shadow of a shadow, it seems more like the essence of an essence. (Sorry if this is overboard. I'm prepared to blame a sudafed buzz if needed.)

I find it impossible to write anything insightful about these mixes, but I've been listening to the panama bar set a lot this week, and the mixture of melancholy and euphoria seems really extraordinary to me - I want to group it with some DJ Sprinkles mixes, maybe, but mostly out of ignorance.

Thanks, I was going to ask about 2-step recommendations. I started listening to Sound of the Pirates and mostly like it so far. (I've gotten sidetracked by Arabic music at the moment, but will come back to all of this shortly.)

OK back to Zed Bias just in time for some "eastern" sounding vocals. I'm kind of bemused by how thoroughly I missed all of this. I really like this thread of dance music way way more than most of the mega genre.

I don't know, "UK garage" and "2-step" just never sounded very inviting and didn't give anything away, to me, about what they sounded like (not that most genre labels really do I suppose).
