do you mean sexy vocals (the actual singing) or sexy singers (the way they look)? Anyway, your two choices fit both bills i'd say.

"do you mean sexy vocals (the actual singing) or sexy singers (the way they look)?"

I was thinking along the lines of how they sing.

I second Brigitte Bardot, and Patty Donahue

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 19 September 2002 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

hey Joan - Spring joy ! I always thought i was the only one (in my world at least) who appreciated how marvellous/sexy/groovy that Anglophile Franco-Spanish trio were. And mmm what a sexy voice she had.

for some reason lately the Kelis-sung chorus of Ol' Dirty Bastard's "Got Your Money" has struck me as the sexiest thing on earth, no idea why. that (particular instance of) metronomic robot blankness is oddly appealing for some reason

Who does the singing in Massive Attack's Dissolved Girl? She has a beautiful voice.
A friend of mine did a *great* impression of an indie boy at a Donnas concert today, which I couldn't possibly do justice to by describing, although I wish I could.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Bjork is the only woman I've heard whose voice strikes me as sexy. None of those mentioned above do in the least.

meirion john lewis (mei), Thursday, 7 November 2002 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

All-time sexiest was Marilyn McCoo in The 5th Dimension. Right now, Lilian Vieira from Zuco 103. These two are followed closely for me [in no particular order] by Julieta Venegas, Monie Love in her heyday, Astrud Gilberto (not now, although she has aged pretty well), Michael Steele out the Bangles, Maki Nomiya from Pizzicato Five, and Ms. Ann Peebles (see "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down" and "I Can't Stand the Rain").

(Speaking of that last song, how about Missy Elliott, pre-scary/sudden-weight-loss? Although I'm probably just stepping on Jody Beth's toes here....)

Matt C., Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn how did I forget Erykah Badu and Allison Moorer and Gigi? Damn why am I so obsessed with this?

Matt C., Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Alison Statton from YMG/Gist and Roxanne Faith Healer have their sexy moments.

dan (dan), Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Bjork, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Ani DiFranco, Emmylou Harris, Billie Holiday, Hope Sandoval, Aretha Franklin, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, and that girl called Ara or Asa or something that sings on some of the tracks on Talvin Singh's Sounds of the Asian Underground CD.

nickalicious, Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm completely ashamed of myself for forgetting Edie Brickell, Gillian Welch, and Natalie Merchant. :D

nickalicious, Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't remember her name but the lead singer of Mazzy Star was very sexy. Anyone know them?

I find Nico's voice very alluring. That icy and distant voice, haunting but very seductive.

Juan, Thursday, 7 November 2002 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"lead singer of Mazzy Star" = Hope Sandoval

AHA! So THAT's her main project!

I've become very familiar (obsessed?) with her sexy-as-sin voice thanks to the Loveage: Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By album featuring herself, Mike Patton (a sexy beast of a voice on that guy too), and Dan the Automator. Only, all this time I didn't know what group she came from. Thank you kindly, sir!

nickalicious, Thursday, 7 November 2002 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Anggun on the lovely slinky jazzthing "Summer In Paris" on (DJ) Cam's new album Soulshine has a voice that makes me go all gooey. And you don't wanna see *that* too often.

Are you a pedophile by any chance? :)

sherri, Sunday, 10 November 2002 03:58 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
Oh, i think i've got to say Sarahs Nixey and Cracknell definitely... and the Shangri-La's, quite a mix of the tough and tender vocal timbre to their voices.
Kate Bush sometimes; particularly the track, "The Sensual World" i'm thinking of, the ode to Joyce's final bit of "Ulysses", "Penelope"; fantastic and indeed an alluringly delivered song. Oh, and "The Dreaming", the album as a whole, from what i remember.

Tom May, Monday, 2 December 2002 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Interestingly, on "One Beat" I think Corin Tucker gets reeealll hot on the chorus of "Oh" and horrifically unattractive on the worthless "Prisstina" when she overemotes "rock'n'roll". I've never heard somebody be so charged and so painfully affected on the same album, except maaaybe PJ Harvey (who probably taught her how to ruin the concept of and say Rock'n'roll - or maybe it was Greil Marcus).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 2 December 2002 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Dolores o'Rihordan or something

the Dirt (FunkDirt), Friday, 9 February 2007 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'm such an internet loser. someone remind me how to make cursive?

the Dirt (FunkDirt), Friday, 9 February 2007 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

why would singing in french be cheating ??

because singing in french immediately ups the sexiness level by exactly 247.2%. even paris hilton might have a chance of sounding sexy in french.

but probably not.

m the g (mister the guanoman), Friday, 9 February 2007 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

ahah. I think she actually sings/says something in french on her album. not sure though.
might just be some "jeu de mot" on her name...

She doesn't really sing much, but every word that comes out of Beth Nottingham's mouth (drummer for The Black Lipstick) is sexy as hell.

i read this thread as "sexist female vocalists." highly disappointed.

critique de la vie quotidienne (modestmickey), Saturday, 10 February 2007 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

but anyways, rita lee from os mutantes circa "baby" (1971 english version) is the correct answer.

Nina Persson. Everything she sings is close to porn. Youtube the video for "I Need Some Fine Wine (And You Need to be Nicer)"

That was easy!

I mean, terrific song, Nina as dominatrix, sleeping maid and Nina looking very Veronica Mars'ish while cat and dog fly about in slo-mo and glasses and cups break. There is no bad here.

one year passes...

Listening straight through her Chess Box Set and I gotta say, without reservation, Etta James.

Patti Smith. Call me an androgyne, call me what you will.

mose def (kenan), Saturday, 31 January 2009 06:38 (seventeen years ago)

woah. Not as sexy as when she does this as a duet with Glen Campbell (as mentioned above), but pretty crazy here. She's so sleepy.

Dominique from Ivy, and in her own inimitable way: Sharon Jones.

When I think "sexy vocals" all I can think of is that Jim Backus / Phyllis Diller "Delicious" thing.

But otherwise, probably Sue from Life Without Buildings (?)
