he is about to release a new record with White Fence and i really like both of them.
http://pitchfork.com/news/45928-listen-ty-segallwhite-fence-i-am-not-a-game/

deserves his own thread.

nostormo, Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

i like him, but not sure i'd call him classic just yet

stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 29 March 2012 20:59 (thirteen years ago)

classic enough to have his name spelled right!
jk -- maybe a mod can fix?

oops..

lol. also a fan of his brother, jonathan livingston.

anyway, i like a lot of ty segall's singles and his early albums, seen him live several times, but have slept on his last two full-lengths. the reverse shark attack LP he did with mikal cronin is worth seeking out.

preternatural concepts concerning variances in sound and texture (contenderizer), Thursday, 29 March 2012 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

Even though he's young he's release a ton of material and the hit rate is quite impressively high. Maybe not 100% Classic yet, but on his way.

i've only heard goodbye bread, but like it a lot. seems like a young man full of potential!

tylerw, Thursday, 29 March 2012 21:05 (thirteen years ago)

singles comp on Goner that came out a few months back is pretty solid

Flat Of NAGLs (sleeve), Thursday, 29 March 2012 21:10 (thirteen years ago)

Good timing for this thread cause I dug Lemons out the other day and remember it ruled and was wondering why I only had one record by the guy.

Mongo Beefhead Tribesman (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 30 March 2012 04:52 (thirteen years ago)

I like his music a lot, but I want to say neither. I've heard one or two Sic Alps records, and as Ty Segall, 'Melted', 'Goodbye Bread', and an EP of T. Rex covers. They all seemed like pure 60s garage psych formalism. And unlike others mining simliar territory--like Jay Reatard or someone--there's not a really strong identity to any of it, or like, emotion, or anything like, *oh my god what is this*. It's more 'what Moby Grape thing or whatever is he riffing on here?' What I get most is, this guy has great taste in rock, he's dedicated enough to recreate what he likes, but he's artistically stalled out, or something.

I like his music, I *really* like his music, but it's classicist, not Classic. Which is probably a totally unfair assessment and I'd love to be proven wrong.

America's Mobile, Friday, 30 March 2012 05:21 (thirteen years ago)

^ there is something there that rings true for me, though i do like ty and his music. i certainly don't buy "classic" vs. "classicist" as an exclusive dichotomy in all cases (i mean, i am a 21st century "garage rock" fan, after all), but i'm nonetheless reminded of the lazy cowgirls' scathing diss of bands who have a record collection more than an identity of their own: "you've got no sound, just a dialect". i think that, at his best, ty's strong enough as a songwriter and as a kick-ass rock 'n roll presence to transcend the shoebox limits of pure psych formalism. but i'm not sure...

it's interesting to listen to "where your mind goes", the tube nostormo just posted, w this debate in mind. i'd say that the verses are formalist and nothing more, but that the chorus melody is "ty's song", the distinctive, personal sound that unifies his best tunes. it's got as much in common w nirvana as it does any psych/garage predecessor. if nothing else, this thread's convinced me that i've gotta spend some time with his last couple LPs.

preternatural concepts concerning variances in sound and texture (contenderizer), Friday, 30 March 2012 06:28 (thirteen years ago)

His sound isn׳t too original but his songwriting is better than most of the other garage
acts around.I guess the universal appeal of it plus the fact he plays
all instruments by himself makes him the ״king״ of the scene by fans.
And he is getting better with each record.

nostormo, Friday, 30 March 2012 06:58 (thirteen years ago)

Ty still hasn't topped the first Epsilons record, in my estimation. His fuzztone chords buzztone voice were a great conduit for that band's horror-punk show. His solo records don't seem to have as much to say, like he's shying away from the strictly juvenile horndog howls of "Pantyhose" and "Fever to Kill".

also: Korg!

bendy, Friday, 30 March 2012 12:28 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, that stuff is great (plus ground zero for segal, mooseheart & kronin), but i don't know that it's really any better than ty solo. sort of a reatards vs jay thing, where the former is way more high energy, but the latter is appealing in other ways. like "the drag" doesn't really kick ass, but it's still a great song. plus the traditional fools:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFPOLkDhOEM&feature=relmfu

preternatural concepts concerning variances in sound and texture (contenderizer), Friday, 30 March 2012 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

^ Totally otm. I'd say I wasn't trying to imply 'classic' and 'classicist' as exclusive categories or a dichotomy or anything, but--and just my own stupid, until now unconsidered bias--I think of classicism/formalism as a kind of artistically weak strategy and therefore it's difficult to consider classicist work 'classic', which I define as 'something great, timeless'. But there's no really good reason to think that, it was just some bias I never really thought about, and also, classicism in rock music is probably makes a lot of sense at this particular moment in time.

You're 100% right about the 90s/Nirvana + psych/garage synthesis, it's hard not to hear it now. There are some 60/70s by way of 90s ideas at work in a lot of his music, esp. on 'Melted'. It's a revival of a revival.

If you liked "Hair," you should also get the S/T LP by Mikal Cronin, who is in Ty Segall's band - that album rules.

Walter Galt, Monday, 14 May 2012 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

Yep that Cronin lp from last year is superb. Anybody heard Slaughterhouse yet? I think it comes out next month.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 14 May 2012 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

hair is awesome, they started the set with WF dudes & played a few songs off of it (the first two iirc) so 70's though after they got off stage & ty segall band was on it a noticeable blast step back to the 60's

hoping they have the Hair LP on sale at the show, I'll probably buy it

dmr, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 17:57 (thirteen years ago)

Really enjoying "Hair" despite not being keen on Ty Segall's previous work. This LP is nothing new but it works really well. Not sure where to start with White Fence but I should check some of his stuff out

gouty ted, Thursday, 17 May 2012 12:43 (thirteen years ago)

Shit, I thought the Men were FANTASTIC when I saw them a couple of months ago! They had a great female bassist with them then who I don't think is in the band anymore. But they were totally ferocious; the drummer's a monster.

Walter Galt, Thursday, 17 May 2012 13:05 (thirteen years ago)

bassist when i saw them was just some douchey looking guy with a haircut

flopson, Thursday, 17 May 2012 14:32 (thirteen years ago)

best show I have seen in aaaaaaages

missed the Men. Strange Boys were boring. White Fence was good. Ty Segall fucking RIPPED. seriously awesome.

dmr, Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

he came out with White Fence to do Long Black Curtain but I think that was the only song they did off "Hair." other than that they each had separate sets.

one of Ty Segall's encores was a cover of Gimme Some Money by the Thamesmen, from Spinal Tap. lolol.

all the stuff from Melted sounded incredible. Girlfriend and Finger were probably my favorites of the set.

dmr, Thursday, 17 May 2012 15:48 (thirteen years ago)

Evan R, Monday, 25 June 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

After a few spins I think it is equal to his best albums which is high praise. Although Tell Me What's Inside Your Heart and Wave Goodbye sound like two of his best ever songs. I will probably have changed my mind by next week and consider it his best album!

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 25 June 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

same thing happens to me but if you are using firefox apparently it works better on different browsers, also if you follow links within spin website rather than going straight fom external link you won't get constantly redirected i think

dmr, Thursday, 28 June 2012 21:22 (thirteen years ago)

I'd love to see this dude blow up, I think he should at least be able to get to Jay Reatard levels. Which isn't huge huge, but not too shabby for a garage rock dude.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 28 June 2012 21:43 (thirteen years ago)

the late great, Thursday, 28 June 2012 23:51 (thirteen years ago)

I would say he is currently at least as big as, or about to be. I don't remember Jay Reatard packing Webster Hall

dmr, Friday, 29 June 2012 00:20 (thirteen years ago)

let's hope he won't get huge, cause it will probably make his music worse as it almost always does.
plus, the "one man band" thing is one of the major reasons his records are good.
in short, things should stay as they are imo.

nostormo, Friday, 29 June 2012 18:35 (thirteen years ago)

ty segall is bigger than jay reatard ever was when he was alive

nostormo, Friday, 29 June 2012 18:41 (thirteen years ago)

rly? last couple times i saw jay, the audience was huge and super dedicated, including pretty broad cross-section of scenes and peoples. have only seen ty play smaller joints to a more homogenous group of hipster indie-punk types.

contenderizer, Friday, 29 June 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

that would be a hard poll

re: popularity like stuff isn't challenging at all & his greatest pop moments are pretty easy to imagine being enjoyed by anyone who likes pop rock

carly rae (flopson), Friday, 29 June 2012 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

some narcissism of small difference in my last post, cuz the "pretty broad cross section" i'm talking about just means different stripes of punks and rockers

contenderizer, Friday, 29 June 2012 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

yeah obviously this anecdotal sample is not perfectly representative & are really dependent on time & locale. you said you haven't seen him in a while, he really blew up in the past year, the show here was at a modest sized-venue but it sold out and huge crowds were denied, played huge show in nyc, pitchfork best new music, etc

carly rae (flopson), Friday, 29 June 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

dmr, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

dig slaughterhouse, but there isn't much to it, imo. it's a 30 minute mini-album consisting of five real top-shelf keepers that run just over 16 minutes: "death", "bought my eyes", "the tongue", "inside your heart" and "oh mary". those are padded out with three serviceable but hardly memorable garage stompers and a couple of truly crappy covers, all of which take up another 13 minutes or so.

oh yeah, and a lifeless noise dirge that adds nothing but running time and gives the dirtbombs' "race to the bottom" a run for it's no money.

contenderizer, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

not to say that it's a bad record, just that it feels a little slight

contenderizer, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 21:30 (thirteen years ago)

is Wave Goodbye a cover? that's one of the best tracks on the album.

Diddy Wah Diddy and Fuzz War are the only weak spots imo.

no, wave goodbye is an original. the other cover is "the bag i'm in".

contenderizer, Thursday, 26 July 2012 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

i saw him play last week - his set ended abruptly after a shoving match broke out between him and a security guy after Ty tried shoving him into the mosh pit. it was pretty great.

five months pass...

I still receive digital promos of things from a few PR folks and I weed through them as I can (I will be better about it from now on). While weeding lately I checked out Slaugherhouse and man, was I impressed! I know this guy is prolific and has a ton of projects he lends his sweaty guitar to, and I don't know how deep I will get into his cannon, but this album is so great: fuzz turned all the way up to skronk (sometimes), psych rock done by guys who like metal playing in a garage with egg cartons splattered on the walls and every Pixies record in their album collection.

Found this live clip of my favorite cut from the disc:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xx6alYZZGa0

My favorite Sonic Youth moments are "Daydream Nation" and "Goo," when they approximate being an actual pop band. This album fits into that same wheelhouse for me.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 18 March 2013 17:22 (twelve years ago)

I finally got TWINS. It's dope. Slaughterhouse is maybe a little bit better but they're close. Twins is probably catchier and Slaughterhouse rocks harder.

Overall MELTED is still consistently my favorite, I'm trying not to turn into a Ty Segall completist since he has so much shit out but I think I need to go back and get that one on vinyl.

dmr, Monday, 18 March 2013 17:32 (twelve years ago)

It's the only one I own.

Trip Maker, Monday, 18 March 2013 17:34 (twelve years ago)

Melted is the only one I still don't have, need to track that down.

dmr otm! Twins is probably the best thing he's done since Melted.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 18 March 2013 17:45 (twelve years ago)

so expensive though! Drag City's prices are kind of outrageous nowadays. and no download code. is "Drag City Green Label" supposed to be some premium-quality pressing or something?

(DC not having anything on Spotify does make me buy more of their records overall, I will admit.)

dmr, Monday, 18 March 2013 17:53 (twelve years ago)

best thing he did is srill the collabration with White Fence (hair) imo

nostormo, Monday, 18 March 2013 20:12 (twelve years ago)

also, sadly, at this point i don't think he got something new to offer.
maybe it's because of the over excessive releases lately

nostormo, Monday, 18 March 2013 20:20 (twelve years ago)

disagree ... it's a lot of records but all three of his 2012 releases hit the spot for me (and all were pretty different from each other)

dmr, Monday, 18 March 2013 20:44 (twelve years ago)

sort of different. all quality tho.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 18 March 2013 20:50 (twelve years ago)

How's the singles collection?

the late great, Monday, 18 March 2013 20:58 (twelve years ago)

the singles collection is great, but if you've only heard stuff from Goodbye Bread on, be prepared for a significantly lower-fi experience. i think you could construct a fantastic 45-minute record our of his three major 2012 releases and it would be an all-time classic.

i kant believe it's not buffon (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 18 March 2013 21:00 (twelve years ago)

i wouldn't go as far as "all time classic", but it will be great.

i think you could construct a fantastic 45-minute record our of his three major 2012 releases and it would be an all-time classic.

which tracks would you pick? I like him in theory but can never make it very far through one of his records. Finger is the only song of his that ever really stuck in my head. I think White Fence, Oh Sees, Fresh & Onlys are all a lot better but maybe I just haven't found a way into his catalog.

wk, Monday, 18 March 2013 22:43 (twelve years ago)

just off the top of my head:

from slaughterhouse - the tongue, wave goodbye, tell me what's inside your heart
from hair - i am not a game, time, easy ryder
from twins - would you be my love, thank god for the sinners, love fuzz, you're the doctor

dmr, Monday, 18 March 2013 22:58 (twelve years ago)

the more I think about it Twins is probably the best front to back out of these. it's easier to pick the winners and losers off Slaughterhouse.

dmr, Monday, 18 March 2013 23:01 (twelve years ago)

I'm really digging the album. I hear a lot of Neil Young in this, which is obviously always a good thing imo.

scubasteve, Thursday, 15 August 2013 14:41 (twelve years ago)

ha yeah, "all-folk-minimalist-record" sounds like a good move to me.

it's ok, but not really challenging i think.

maybe it deserves more spinning to decide though

The best Segall records are his collaborations. (White Fence, Cronin, Epsilons..)

He should stick to that formula imo

Walter Galt, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 13:16 (twelve years ago)

I saw FUZZ live on Friday night at the Tufnell Park Dome. They totally killed it. Segall is an animal of a drummer and the riffs are just so huge... I love the singles, but live, stripped of the slightly distant reverb, the tunes are just monstrous. I kind of think they could be huge.

Walter Galt, Monday, 30 September 2013 11:51 (twelve years ago)

gah, want the fancy-ass version of the FUZZ lp so dang bad. somebody please send one to me for no reason at all.

also hope to make one of the mass shows in a couple weeks.

there are a few different drummers i believe, the lady who toured with him on a few, him on some, and i think chris wodehouse who is from that whole san fran psych/garage thing.

still think the album is a little too long and some of the guitar solos are sort of distracting/crappy but overall i really dug it

Super solid fun record! Drags a bit in spots maybe - but good dirty sound, really hooky tunes - almost verging on a scrappy sprightly version of Deep Purple or Sabbath riffage. I haven't heard everything, but Manipulator seems like a breakthrough of sorts.

Brio2, Friday, 24 October 2014 20:44 (eleven years ago)

Seems like everyone very keen to tag this as ' break through' when it actually appears to be struggling for any more traction than previous records. Everyone seems to get that he is a solid songwriter but he does not seem to have found X FaCtor song. Not that I think that is necessarily some kind of noble goal to crave or is necessary but it is curious to me how much of the narrative around this record is about taking things to the ' next level'

Hinklepicker, Friday, 24 October 2014 21:20 (eleven years ago)

It does seem like a bit more thought out and cohesive and tuneful record than others to me - and maybe a bit more conventional. I don't think anyone really expects a huge hit record out of the guy.

o. nate, Thursday, 22 October 2015 01:32 (ten years ago)

Cronin's debut is excellent, heavy Segall-strafed power-pop. His second was pleasant, but I found the third dull, though I didn't listen to it enough to be fair. He's no Ty.

I thought the covers album was really boring, like a high school covers band. Ty at his best is brilliant - Freedom's Goblin often is. But Fudge Sandwich felt like a certain period of Robert Pollard stuff, where he's more into making "product" than actual good records (tho the Lennon cover was strong).
