They forecasted Heavy Metal, Glam, Punk, Twee Pop, and Britpop. They were British Invaders in the 60s, a Theatrical Troupe in the 70s, and Arena Heroes in the 80s, before packing it in in the 90s.
And now The Kinks are getting their own ILM poll!
We’ll be using this list for eligible tracks, which includes every Kinks song, plus the solo works of Ray and Dave.

Absolutely. So many many favourite tracks by this band, and condensing them down to just 20 is going to be a serious pain!
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 6 April 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)
As much as I want to rep for UK Jive, I don't think I can do it with only 20 choices (although "War Is Over" may creep in at #20).

I tried not to overthink this one too much. I just made a ranked list of all The Kinks songs I love the most, and then cropped everything from position 20 onwards. Which was hard, but there we are!

― Iago Galdston, Saturday, 7 April 2012 00:29 (thirteen years ago)
I'd go Lola vs. Powerman, then Muswell. Gives a better sense of the evolution that got them there.
― EZ Snappin, Saturday, 7 April 2012 00:31 (thirteen years ago)
thanks!
― Iago Galdston, Saturday, 7 April 2012 00:31 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I completely agree with EZ on this one. There's one or two tracks on Lola vs. Powerman which kinda signpost the way to the direction that they'd take on Muswell Hillbillies. I think I actually prefer Lola vs. Powerman of the two, but Muswell Hillbillies is a great record.

Saw them do this live in 1993, at what was apparently their last-ever show in the Chicago area. I was completely floored that they'd play this at all, much less open with it. I had a 2nd-row seat, and a guy in front of me was dressed in full Edwardian ruffled gear.
― Dancing with Mr. T (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 7 April 2012 06:06 (thirteen years ago)
Two things
a) I have been listening to The Village Green Preservation Society tonight and I am pretty much in love with it. I'm def looking forward to my homework for this poll.
b) Tarfumes, I just listened to Full Moon bc it was the first youtube itt. Am I too off base to say that Davies sounds eerily like Rick Danko, and that it reminds me an awful lot of The Band? In a really good way, I know not everyone loves them but wow what a great song.
Deep sigh. I have a lot of work ahead of me! :D

Of the very late albums, I'd recommend UK Jive most highly. It's one little oasis of "Hey, we still mean it!" in the midst of a run of catchy singles and mountains of album filler.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 7 April 2012 17:52 (thirteen years ago)
It's a really awful title for a record though, is UK Jive.
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Saturday, 7 April 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)
I was just listening to some of it today, and while the production on some of the songs is pretty dated (probably more than on any other Kinks record), it's easily their best album of the 80s/90s. This is probably the best song on it:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jjcl2-6VI7o

― zappi, Saturday, 7 April 2012 21:25 (thirteen years ago)
I don't know a whole lot about the Kinks, though I "have" all their albums into the 1970s, but I may as well vote for this & will certainly vote "Walter" super high.
― Euler, Saturday, 7 April 2012 21:38 (thirteen years ago)
Sweet Lady Genevieve is an easy number one pick for me. My favorite Kinks songs are the kitchen sink dramas, and this is the finest. The opening line, how he stretches out the "I" in "Once under a scarlet sky I told you never ending lies," you can tell how the narrator is uncomfortable owning up to his past, like still wants to gloss over that it's him who "acted so slyly because you were acting so shy". That apology comes right after slipping some sweet talking poesy. He goes on to make his case for her to give him a second chance, but I'm never convinced he'll get it, or he even deserves it. But boy, is he sincere. So much implied, and the delivery is heartbreaking.
And another one that slips through the cracks, so I'm going to mention it again: "The Way Love Used to Be". One of Ray's best melodies.

I realized there were four songs on my ballot that I first heard through other people's versions: Days, Stop Your Sobbing, Victoria, and David Watts. Lot of great covers of Kinks songs out there.
― something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)
Pretty sure I read somewhere that Anderson originally intended for Rushmore's entire soundtrack to consist of Kinks songs.

― two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 15:36 (thirteen years ago)
unless it was original score, and they're still alive iirc?!
― two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 15:37 (thirteen years ago)
Wikipedia (quoting liner notes, though):
"Rushmore is a 1999 soundtrack to the Wes Anderson film of the same name. In the album's liner notes, it is explained that director Wes Anderson originally intended for the Rushmore soundtrack to be almost entirely composed of songs by The Kinks. This concept changed, however, during filming, until only one Kinks song remained on the album."
― clemenza, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 15:47 (thirteen years ago)
"This concept changed" = "people told me that this was a bad and selfish idea and also it cost too much" is my guess but wtf do I know
― two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 15:50 (thirteen years ago)
That's exactly what I thought too: "concept changed" = "this ain't happening." Money's always the first best guess...the only thing is, in this case, some of those would-be Kinks songs were replaced by songs from the Who and Rolling Stones, and I have believe the Kinks are third on that sliding scale of remuneration (not a value judgement, Kinks lovers).
― clemenza, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 16:03 (thirteen years ago)
good point. i was thinking more of the creation song, which i know had to be cheaper?!

My list is still at 30 songs -- I can't get rid of any of them. When I listen to the playlist, it's like omg THIS ONE? omg THIS ONE? omg THIS ONE? omg THIS ONE? omg THIS ONE? omg THIS ONE? over and over 30 times. The ones that get cut will be the ten songs that I vaguely want to ff after listening to the playlist like 10 more times.

Listening to Muswell last night, had my first left-it-off-my-ballot regret with "Complicated Life." Listened to Kontroversy this morning, had second regret with "Where Have All the Good Times Gone." otoh, don't know what I would have dropped for either of them.
― something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 13:20 (thirteen years ago)
Really, really want to include "Low Budget" but not sure I can find a place. Honestly, a ton of those Arista tracks are fun, but the bar is high. Kinks should have gotten a top 30.

I've been thinking about "Mirror of Love" from the Preservation project (Ray singing in the guise of one of the lead characters mistresses--yeah) all day today.
― Raymond Dubious Davies (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 12 April 2012 01:30 (thirteen years ago)
"Mirror of Love" is great. I literally can't remember any other songs from Act 2 (except "Preservation," but I'm pretty sure that was a non-album single).

What's wrong with Wes Anderson? He's a huge Kinks fan and his use of their songs actually make me appreciate those cuts even more.
― Moka, Thursday, 12 April 2012 08:28 (thirteen years ago)
I like lots of Wes Anderson movies, and I think he uses music well, mostly. But he has his loathers, and/or people who might get squeamish about touting a song used prominently in a movie -- for fear of being branded Wes-Anderson-sountrack-Kinks-fans or whatever. (I was mostly joking about "poisoned by association," it just came up once or twice in the Rolling Stones poll.)

I've gotten into lengthy arguments with another Jewish friend who is convinced this song (and by extension Ray) is anti-semitic. which seems to completely miss the point of it to me.
― Jilly Boel and the Eltones (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 13 April 2012 20:05 (thirteen years ago)
Which song?
― kornrulez6969, Friday, 13 April 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)
OK, I figured it out LOL.
As a Jewish person, I don't find that song offensive in the least.
― kornrulez6969, Friday, 13 April 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)
I've heard that before too, Shakey. I think it was argued on a thread here one time or another. I agree that misses the point.
I'm having a hard time cutting this down from around 45-50 tracks.

IIRC, To the Bone has an absolutely heartbreaking version of "Celluloid Heroes." Pretty sure it was the first one I heard -- and still my favorite.

― Flat Of NAGLs (sleeve), Saturday, 14 April 2012 21:58 (thirteen years ago)
My "short list" was 40 songs, and even then I found it lacking. I really wanted to include "Do It Again" or "Come Dancing" (the latter I suspect will get some love anyways), and I wanted to get "War Is Over" in there without feeling like I'd neglected a song from Something Else.
My pick for the worst Kinks song, however, was depressingly easy.

xp to tim
when I was like 15 in 1982 I had a subscription to Creem and they printed that great Mendelsohn piece about going to an 80's era concert & having his spirit crushed when he compared it to having his life saved by the Arthur LP, that was the first time I realized there might be more to the Kinks than the One For The Road album, "Celluloid Heroes", and "Lola". To my delight it is reprinted in that anthology that came out a few years ago.

I know that bad things have probably happened to All Day and All Of the Night over the years (Picture Book, I'm looking at you), but that song is SO TUFF. It makes anyone who's playing it seem just a little (sometimes a lot) cooler than they were before they starting playing the song. It's like magic.

That's a great way of putting it. YRGM just hints at the craunch of AD/AN. The latter made my top five easily. Also, best snare sound in the entire Kinks katalog.

noo that is really bad poll advice
― iatee, Monday, 16 April 2012 17:41 (thirteen years ago)
a poll w/ 10 hardcore fans has more interesting results than one w/ 100 people who just know the hits
Point taken.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 16 April 2012 18:35 (thirteen years ago)
a poll w/ more than 10 people is always better than a poll w/ 10 people
― some dude, Monday, 16 April 2012 18:42 (thirteen years ago)
i mean if you only want to measure the opinion of some exclusive elite you can do a private goon poll, but if you're measuring public opinion of the board you should welcome anyone who wants to vote
― some dude, Monday, 16 April 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)
well it depends on what you want out of a poll but as a general trend the more people participating the more predictable the results. for artists like the kinks where someone might use this list as a way to dive into a pretty deep catelogue, the exclusive elite serve a noble purpose and greatest hits people are just watering it down.
― iatee, Monday, 16 April 2012 18:48 (thirteen years ago)
when I become king of ilm we will weigh these polls by how much of a fan you consider yourself so the greatest hits people 'get to play' but don't screw up the purity of the poll that much
― iatee, Monday, 16 April 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)
That elitist bullshit is not a good look. I'm with some dude on this. Just because well known favorites top a list doesn't mean the rest of the list would be useless. the "elites" will be served by posting their ballots afterwords, as always.
― EZ Snappin, Monday, 16 April 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)
er 'catalogue'
― iatee, Monday, 16 April 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)
at this point we've polled a ton of artists who have both bit ubiquitous hits and more obscure cult-beloved material and in general i think the cultists have been amply represented in pretty much every case
― some dude, Monday, 16 April 2012 18:53 (thirteen years ago)
well ilm is filled w/ cultists, I'm just arguing against voting for the sake of voting
― iatee, Monday, 16 April 2012 18:56 (thirteen years ago)
presumably nobody is just throwing song titles in an e-mail for the hell of it, as long as they like some Kinks songs isn't that reason enough?
― some dude, Monday, 16 April 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)
not arguing for the sake of arguing?xp
― improvised explosive advice (WmC), Monday, 16 April 2012 18:58 (thirteen years ago)
well lots of people like some kinks songs I just think people who like some kinks songs but have heard more than 20 kinks songs are probably better people to go to for opinions on kinks songs
― iatee, Monday, 16 April 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)
if no deep cut places above "You Really Got Me" the same way "Sway" placed 40 spaces above "Start Me Up" or the way "The Rain Song" placed 20 spaces above "Whole Lotta Love," that's gotta be a reflection on the Kinks' catalog and how people feel about it, not about whether Johnny Fever was being too nice to the posers
― some dude, Monday, 16 April 2012 19:00 (thirteen years ago)
nah kinks are a different beast than the rolling stones, more comparable to the beach boys where you have deep cuts that even casual fans haven't even heard of
― iatee, Monday, 16 April 2012 19:01 (thirteen years ago)
In order to participate in this poll, 1. please demonstrate that you have memorized "Sweet Lady Genevieve" in its entirety, and 2. submit a short essay explaining its significance, both in terms of the Kinks' overall career, and with regard to current events at the time. You will receive your results within one week, and those scoring above the 90th percentile may submit their votes at that time. Thank you.

I think the best polls have a mix of hardcore and casual fans; for the documentary poll, I encouraged abbreviated ballots, and I'll do the same for Neil Young. The lengthier and more esoteric ballots will take care of themselves.

My thoughts exactly. This wasn't the easiest poll to vote in, particularly for Americans given the Spotify situation and that much of their key work is only available as imports or in substandard domestic editions on CD.
That said, I've managed to carve out a "Top 50" tracks list and will be up shortly on a new thread w/top albums and then hated tracks as opening acts.
