And now The Kinks are getting their own ILM poll!

We’ll be using this list for eligible tracks, which includes every Kinks song, plus the solo works of Ray and Dave.

Yeah, I completely agree with EZ on this one. There's one or two tracks on Lola vs. Powerman which kinda signpost the way to the direction that they'd take on Muswell Hillbillies. I think I actually prefer Lola vs. Powerman of the two, but Muswell Hillbillies is a great record.

Saw them do this live in 1993, at what was apparently their last-ever show in the Chicago area. I was completely floored that they'd play this at all, much less open with it. I had a 2nd-row seat, and a guy in front of me was dressed in full Edwardian ruffled gear.

Interesting, I never made that connection before; I can totally hear that. The version I posted has a different arrangement from the studio recording...better, I'd say, and definitely bears more of a resemblance to the Band (who I love).

listened to Face to Face last night to think about making a ballot, and this is impossible! and I don't even know their stuff at all post-Muswell.

Going to listen to all the tracks mentioned so far, I'm only familiar with the albums from Kink Kontroversy up to Arthur (plus the early singles) - enough to put a ballot together for sure but I'm probably missing out on some later gems.

Of the very late albums, I'd recommend UK Jive most highly. It's one little oasis of "Hey, we still mean it!" in the midst of a run of catchy singles and mountains of album filler.

It's a really awful title for a record though, is UK Jive.

I was just listening to some of it today, and while the production on some of the songs is pretty dated (probably more than on any other Kinks record), it's easily their best album of the 80s/90s. This is probably the best song on it:

I don't know a whole lot about the Kinks, though I "have" all their albums into the 1970s, but I may as well vote for this & will certainly vote "Walter" super high.

Sweet Lady Genevieve is an easy number one pick for me. My favorite Kinks songs are the kitchen sink dramas, and this is the finest. The opening line, how he stretches out the "I" in "Once under a scarlet sky I told you never ending lies," you can tell how the narrator is uncomfortable owning up to his past, like still wants to gloss over that it's him who "acted so slyly because you were acting so shy". That apology comes right after slipping some sweet talking poesy. He goes on to make his case for her to give him a second chance, but I'm never convinced he'll get it, or he even deserves it. But boy, is he sincere. So much implied, and the delivery is heartbreaking.

And another one that slips through the cracks, so I'm going to mention it again: "The Way Love Used to Be". One of Ray's best melodies.

That's exactly what I thought too: "concept changed" = "this ain't happening." Money's always the first best guess...the only thing is, in this case, some of those would-be Kinks songs were replaced by songs from the Who and Rolling Stones, and I have believe the Kinks are third on that sliding scale of remuneration (not a value judgement, Kinks lovers).

Had "Autumn Almanac" much higher than I originally thought it would be. Such a complex little three minute thing.

Listening to Muswell last night, had my first left-it-off-my-ballot regret with "Complicated Life." Listened to Kontroversy this morning, had second regret with "Where Have All the Good Times Gone." otoh, don't know what I would have dropped for either of them.

Really, really want to include "Low Budget" but not sure I can find a place. Honestly, a ton of those Arista tracks are fun, but the bar is high. Kinks should have gotten a top 30.

I've been thinking about "Mirror of Love" from the Preservation project (Ray singing in the guise of one of the lead characters mistresses--yeah) all day today.

"Mirror of Love" is great. I literally can't remember any other songs from Act 2 (except "Preservation," but I'm pretty sure that was a non-album single).

What's wrong with Wes Anderson? He's a huge Kinks fan and his use of their songs actually make me appreciate those cuts even more.

I like lots of Wes Anderson movies, and I think he uses music well, mostly. But he has his loathers, and/or people who might get squeamish about touting a song used prominently in a movie -- for fear of being branded Wes-Anderson-sountrack-Kinks-fans or whatever. (I was mostly joking about "poisoned by association," it just came up once or twice in the Rolling Stones poll.)

My "short list" was 40 songs, and even then I found it lacking. I really wanted to include "Do It Again" or "Come Dancing" (the latter I suspect will get some love anyways), and I wanted to get "War Is Over" in there without feeling like I'd neglected a song from Something Else.

The John Mendelsohn liner notes to The Kink Kronikles were one of the first pieces of music writing that I really liked. That and Christgau's "Portrait of the Artist as a Rock and Roll Star" piece on John Lennon.

when I was like 15 in 1982 I had a subscription to Creem and they printed that great Mendelsohn piece about going to an 80's era concert & having his spirit crushed when he compared it to having his life saved by the Arthur LP, that was the first time I realized there might be more to the Kinks than the One For The Road album, "Celluloid Heroes", and "Lola". To my delight it is reprinted in that anthology that came out a few years ago.

I know that bad things have probably happened to All Day and All Of the Night over the years (Picture Book, I'm looking at you), but that song is SO TUFF. It makes anyone who's playing it seem just a little (sometimes a lot) cooler than they were before they starting playing the song. It's like magic.

i mean if you only want to measure the opinion of some exclusive elite you can do a private goon poll, but if you're measuring public opinion of the board you should welcome anyone who wants to vote

well it depends on what you want out of a poll but as a general trend the more people participating the more predictable the results. for artists like the kinks where someone might use this list as a way to dive into a pretty deep catelogue, the exclusive elite serve a noble purpose and greatest hits people are just watering it down.

That elitist bullshit is not a good look. I'm with some dude on this. Just because well known favorites top a list doesn't mean the rest of the list would be useless. the "elites" will be served by posting their ballots afterwords, as always.

at this point we've polled a ton of artists who have both bit ubiquitous hits and more obscure cult-beloved material and in general i think the cultists have been amply represented in pretty much every case

well lots of people like some kinks songs I just think people who like some kinks songs but have heard more than 20 kinks songs are probably better people to go to for opinions on kinks songs

if no deep cut places above "You Really Got Me" the same way "Sway" placed 40 spaces above "Start Me Up" or the way "The Rain Song" placed 20 spaces above "Whole Lotta Love," that's gotta be a reflection on the Kinks' catalog and how people feel about it, not about whether Johnny Fever was being too nice to the posers

nah kinks are a different beast than the rolling stones, more comparable to the beach boys where you have deep cuts that even casual fans haven't even heard of

I think the best polls have a mix of hardcore and casual fans; for the documentary poll, I encouraged abbreviated ballots, and I'll do the same for Neil Young. The lengthier and more esoteric ballots will take care of themselves.

My thoughts exactly. This wasn't the easiest poll to vote in, particularly for Americans given the Spotify situation and that much of their key work is only available as imports or in substandard domestic editions on CD.

That said, I've managed to carve out a "Top 50" tracks list and will be up shortly on a new thread w/top albums and then hated tracks as opening acts.
