Is there a single band/artist that EVERYONE can admit to liking?

Choopy (Rahul Kamath), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

no. we've tried this before.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

There's not. Me and a mate tried to do it with singles, the best we could come up with was "Son of A Preacher Man".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

let's try Minuteman. there was widespread agreement on D.Boon...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone seems to like the Beach Boys, or at least accept that Brian Wilson was a genius....this is a far cry from when i was growing up when it seemed like only people over 35 or extremely retarded had any time for them...when did the Beach Boys become trendy again, assuming they werent throughout the late 70s to early 90s (seemed to be the case, but then i was naive ill-informed and somewhat unenlightened mook then)

blueski, Thursday, 19 September 2002 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never met anyone who disliked Otis Redding. I pity the fool that does, but I've not yet met him.

andy, Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bay City Rollers. What's not to like? Great hair, Teenage Romance, bizarre Tartan theme!

rms (rms), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

doesn't everyone love gwar?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That too...sexcuse me

rms (rms), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely people don't not like The Supremes?

alexfack, Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely everyone loves The Cure? (ducks and runs)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't particularly like Otis Redding.

DeRayMi, Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Never Loved Gene Vincent? ¥

christoff (christoff), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Is anyone gonna step up say they don't like Mission Of Burma??

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, i can't imagine anyone here not liking mission of burma...

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Barrus hates them, therefore that candidate is quashed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Pixies?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Pixies?

Ugh.

hstencil, Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Well shut my mouth.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Teg Nugent

rms (rms), Thursday, 19 September 2002 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Supremes were a godawful plague.

How about Iggy Pop?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

How about the Stone Roses (c. 1989)? I don't see how anyone could not like their first album at least.

Transient, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

iggy pop is useless.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Iggy pop is useless.

I agree. The Stooges are vastly overrated. And the Iggy-penned comments accompanying the re-mastered Raw Power album have got to be the most self-serving, self-aggrandizing liner notes I've ever seen.

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, doesn't everyone love nursery rhymes? they're catchy as all hell.

Chemical Queen (Rahul Kamath), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

my mott the hoople idm covers band with the robotic bear from disneyworld's 'jamboree' thing

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Useless, eh? Well, there's no accounting for taste I suppose......cretins.

How about NEW ORDER?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

New Order is GREBT!!!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry alex, i'm just too mired in pabulum over here.

new order could be THE ONE. although i have my doubts.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone loves *some* Kraftwerk for sure.

Simon, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The answer is clear: Gene Loves Jezebel

Motel Hell (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Only a heartless person could take issue with Stevie Wonder's peak work, but there are heartless people in the world.

wl (wl), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevie Wonder? Surely crap like "I Just Called to Say I Love You," and his participation in "That's What Friends Are For" and "Ebony & Ivory" negate any merit his "peak work" may have earned him.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone loves something by Ministry!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I don't like New Order. It ain't the one y'all are looking for.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Kool and the Gang!!!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Queen. obviously.

I could try Pulp I guess (ps. anyone in the UK seen the new BT Broadband ad?)...

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Wild and Peaceful is way the hell classic, but "Celebrate" comes hazardously close to negating it.

I know: JAMES BROWN

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The Clash!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't recall anyone here saying anything bad about the Pixies. Though maybe I just don't read everything.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

do people dislike "celebration" because of its constant prescence at weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc.? besides "she's so fresh" makes up for that immediately!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron beats me to the punch re "Fresh" (exciting! she's so inviting to meeeeeee!)

I also don't recall anyone saying completely dismissing Public Enemy -- maybe their stuff after 1991, but not their entire oeuvre. Though I could be wrong.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the Beatles? I've only met one person in my life who claimed to completely hate the Beatles, but I suspected it was some kind of silly, reactionary thing...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

well it's still hate so it would count (if they were posting here) (i think senior lurker DG hates the beatles: he's a silly, reactionary thing too haha)

pinefox hates public enemy (ok that's a guess but i will eat kelley deal if i'm wrong)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I just saw Kool and the Gang over the summer in Baltimore. The crowd was mostly black and old enough to remember when those songs came out. This really added to the experience, as I would have hated to watch the show with anyone who though that liking Kool and the Gang was a way of being ironic.

Can I add... The Spinners, Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, Chaka Khan?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

in that recent White Stripes MOJO article Jack White says something to the effect that "anyone who says they don't like the Beatles doesn't really like music." Which strikes me as kinda true, but on the other hand maybe this should just go under the "irritating things musicians say" thread...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like the Beatles. The Pixies only strike me as okay, pretty good - I don't love them. I do like them much better than the Stone Roses, though. Has anyone shot down the Beach Boys yet? Mark is joking with the Clash, but I think Pulp and James Brown are still going. A few more worth trying: Little Richard, Al Green, Buzzcocks, Undertones, Shangri-Las, T. Rex.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like Pulp, but I can get behind James Brown and the Beach Boys (although I'm skeptical that there isn't at least one Beach Boys hata out there, because I personally know a great many). Not gonna touch why you don't like the Beatles...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

(i don't hate the clash, just some their songs and the way they ponce about) (so i wouldn't shoot em down here, except on the alex in nyc/stevie wonder principle up-thread, which is too harsh i think) (on the other hand i think there are several other more dedicated hatas than me)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

there have been a lot of threads regarding the beatles, and in general, it seems a lot of people can't come to terms with the idea that liking the beatles is something everybody HAS to do. I know that for me, personally, John Lennon's deification has affected my ability to listen to his solo work. But I am a pop loser, so I like McCartney more anyways.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 19 September 2002 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never much liked any of their songs. I own loads of cover versions of their stuff by lots of my favourite singers, and they are invariably the worst moments on albums by Aretha, Al Green, Otis and others. Ordinary performers. By far the most overrated act ever. Imposed loads of bad paradigms, and led to a stupid respectability for pop.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

otis redding is the most overrated act ever martin

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

mission of burma is very boring to me, I don't see why they are interesting to anybody. why mission of burma over magazine?

tyler (tyler), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

sproton layer!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon, the Beach Boys are hugely sad. Any band that counts Mike Love in its ranks and records tepid shit like "Kokomo" renders themselves utterly ridiculous. Consider them shot down.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

you can't shoot people down by highlighting the things even ppl who love them will hate!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

negate any merit his "peak work" may have earned him.

That's why I said take issue with his peak work, not with the "entirety of his career" or whatever. The crap can negate his merit, but not the merit of stuff like Talking Book, etc.

wl (wl), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

but this "they recorded some crap stuff therefore they are DISQUALIFIED" thing is ridiculous. I defy anyone to name me a musician who didn't disgrace themselves on record at least once. Why does the object of ILM's shared love have to be infallible...?

Anyway, now I guess I'll just throw my weight behind T. Rex and James Brown, since the Beatles and the Boys seem like dubious contenders.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

alex is cheating so as to sneak Killing Joke in when we are all exhausted

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Some not mentioned. In chronological order Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Prima, Elvis presley, Kinks, Skatalites, New Vaudeville Band, Slade, Motorhead, Chic, Human League, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Saint Etienne.....There's no great unifying band or artist after 1991.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(mott the hoople won this last time, didn't they? i think we had to tie pinefox in a sack for disqualifying people he'd never heard but knew he'd hate if he did)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I veto everyone who ever released a record before 1990 ON PRINCIPLE.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

(and that's being generous)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I defy anyone to name me a musician who didn't disgrace themselves on record at least once.

Only untimely death saves folks from this syndrome.

wl (wl), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

err what about composers?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

If we go by Alex's "if someone has released crap they're shot down", I'd say Iggy Pop would be the first one to go. I dig "Search & Destroy" as much as the next guy, but what about that 80's catalogue? Brrrr....

I'm willing to bet I'm the only person on ILM who can't stand ABBA, and even I like a few songs.

Everyone loves *some* Kraftwerk for sure.

The closest I can get is I like Afrika Bambaata songs that sample 'em.

T. Rex.

Eh, I think everyone could agree that they were OK, but do they really inspire widespread LOVE?

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I've disliked just about every band mentioned on this list, excepting New Order, whose recent work bores me anyway. The Beatles are an abomination.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon, I have to admit that even Killing Joke has released utter garbage (ladies & gentlemen, I give you OUTSIDE THE GATE), but let's remember the question: "Is there a single band/artist that EVERYONE can admit to liking?"

Personally speaking, no matter how great some of Stevie Wonder's stuff may be, I absolutely *LOATHE* some of his later work to the extent that I cannot bear to listen to *ANY* Stevie Wonder, and thus I cannot admit to liking him.

I do like the Pixies, the Clash, New Order, the Beatles, Kraftwerk, and Buzzcocks.

Daniel's spot-on about some of Ig's 80's work (let alone some of his 90's work)....some of which is irrefutably sub-par, but in the same way WL defends Stevie Wonder, I'll stand by Iggy. But, I suppose I can understand why some might not think he's exactly the messiah.

Has anyone mentioned the Rolling Stones as yet?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

how can you possibly nominate the Stones with their 25+ year track record of complete and utter shit, coupled with a monstrosity that has come to define rock n roll as a "business"?

Like you and Stevie Wonder, I honestly can't listen to the Stones anymore - even the stuff I used to love - without feeling sorta dirty and used. They're just such fucking trendhoppers and unrepentant whores.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair point, Shakey Mo.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I've disliked just about every band mentioned on this list

Do you have any suggestions then?

wl (wl), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

no one's shot down James Brown yet.

And really, how could they?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I did.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

no one's shot down James Brown yet.

And really, how could they?

NP: "Hell", by the man himself. It's GRATE.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 19 September 2002 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Teenage Fanclub. What's not to love?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Even *I* like James Brown.

Teenage Fanclub.....yawn.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

David Bowie??

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you have any suggestions then?

Absolutely not. I think that's the point.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is no one listening to me?

(I love how this thread has turned out WORSE than last time by descending into Everyone who's ever released one bad song is out. I think find band no one wants killed would be hard enough)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Britney Spears? Eminem? Anal Cunt?

thom west (thom w), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Loathe Teenage Fanclub. Go New Order! Go Al Green!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham, frankly I thought you were joking. Getting everyone to agree on someone exclusively post-1991 seems much more difficult to me. I mean, I can't think of a single band to nominate.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The Strokes!!

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, seriously - how about the Ronettes?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Listen, Justyn, Listen.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Strokes!!"

My brother told me today that everyone likes the Strokes except me. He lies. Sensible folk know they suck.

Everyone likes at least one Mercury Rev album. QED. I never hear anything really bad said about Weezer or Basement Jaxx, either.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 19 September 2002 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Absolutely not. I think that's the point.

And a good point at that.

wl (wl), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Who doesn't love Neil Diamond?!

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i was thinking today that lots and lots of people like boards of canada, who doesn't like em, holla!

ron (ron), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

how can you possibly nominate the Stones with their 25+ year track record of complete and utter shit

but this "they recorded some crap stuff therefore they are DISQUALIFIED" thing is ridiculous. I defy anyone to name me a musician who didn't disgrace themselves on record at least once.

Contradiction, Shaky Mo? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

second time's a charm:

what about composers?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

MOZART, DAMMIT!!!!!!

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Friday, 20 September 2002 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

As a sidenote, how about Johnny Cash?

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Boards Of Canada bore me to death, sorry. Mozart too damn happy.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 20 September 2002 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

As Ned pointed out, thumbs down on MoB and the Pixies. Not so much a "I hate them", but more of a "what's the big deal?"

So has anyone shot down the Minutemen or Kraftwerk yet?

Anyway to throw a couple more names out there for consideration: Spacemen 3, The Kinks, X, Can, Velvet Underground, AC/DC

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I see your X and raise you a Huey Lewis & The News.

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder how hopeful any of you people posting new suggestions really are.

Josh (Josh), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

like 'oh I know here's one that they missed and surely everyone loves them!'

Josh (Josh), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Insert variation on the John Cage 4'33" gag here. And get me the ever-lovin' hell away from this disaster of a thread.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 September 2002 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont really care, i just happened to actually be thinking this today: "gosh, a lot of people like boards of canada" - deep thoughts are my specialty

ron (ron), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

haha you are all kidding right? come on let's face it the answer is SLEEPER

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Boards of Canada are ok- as in I don't actively hate them -but I don't often see the point of playing MHTRTC when it's sitting so close to my Cocteau Twins cds.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yuss, COCTEAUS. or has someone already done them?

alexfack, Friday, 20 September 2002 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I know so many people who hate the Cocteaus..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 20 September 2002 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Dare i suggest ABBA?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 September 2002 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this "bands that EVERYONE loves" or "bands that EVERYONE ON ILM loves"? If the former, I suspect no one, but James Brown may be as close as you'll get. I'm not sure I've ever met anyone who didn't at least like his stuff.

I hate the Minutemen and Neil Diamond.

Burr, Friday, 20 September 2002 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

buzzcocks <----> magazine

jefferson airplane != aero-ship (empire blows, so what's new)

george gosset (gegoss), Friday, 20 September 2002 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

are there VU hatas among us?

s, Friday, 20 September 2002 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard a LOT of people slam the Velvets. (are you out there, Mark Prindle?)

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 20 September 2002 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I FUCKING HATE THE KINKS.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 20 September 2002 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I dont like the Velvets or the Minutemen. Don't dislike them either particularly but that's not the point.

I do like James Brown.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

let me second chic. surely...

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 September 2002 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC, do you hate Madonna?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Any Momus haters out there? What about Brian Eno or Marvin Gaye. Go Beach Boys!

kinski (kinski), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got it - REM! No, hang on a minute, I don't like them...

Jez, Friday, 20 September 2002 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm willing to bet I'm the only person on ILM who can't stand ABBA, and even I like a few songs.
-- Daniel_Rf

Dare i suggest ABBA?
-- Alex in NYC

Nope.....

Ray M (rdmanston), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

''haha you are all kidding right? come on let's face it the answer is SLEEPER''

I will set fire to yr hair mark!

''I dont like the Velvets or the Minutemen. Don't dislike them either particularly but that's not the point.''

bah! no one looked at that suggestion and then nearly towards someone had to say they don't love minuteman.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

well OK so no one has said they hate minuteman, Tom says he doesn't dislike them: Minuteman wins!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't hate Momus, but honestly I don't like his music.

everyone loves bon jovi, even when they say hate they mean love, you know this, I know this.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

No cos thats not the question Julio. I wouldnt admit to liking them cos I don't.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

bah!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i've not heard minuteman.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Has anyone shot down the Beach Boys yet?"

BANG!

*Sound of band falling to earth accompanied by the sound of screams in irritating four-part harmony*

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Just to summarize. The artists that have been mentioned that I like have all been shot down, except James Brown.

The rest that were mentioned - I don't like.

So right now it's James Brown (unless someone shot him down when I wasn't looking.)

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Minuteman are toss. Nice choruses, but the verses... yekky dehh...

I seem to recall Vitalic has a decent rep round here...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Jez, Friday, 20 September 2002 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i dislike beck.

btw, what's with the bold type.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham shot down James Brown, unless he counts as a 90s artist. There is no ruling yet as to whether the weapon used in the shooting is acceptable under thread-rules.

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't stand Beck.

I think there's a Minuteman/Minutemen confusion going on.

James Brown counts as a 90s artist surely - was there not a MEGAMIX and a single in about 97??

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like the Stone Roses. And I realised the other day I don't like T.Rex either.

I don't care much for Ministry. Most Kool & The Gang, Ella Fitzgerald, Weezer and Basement Jaxx stuff i've heard has been in-one-ear-out-the-other. The Human League makes it but barely. I've never heard Spacemen 3. X is WAY overrated.

Joy Division ?

Patrick, Friday, 20 September 2002 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

People, people. Abruptum! Everybody loves Abruptum, right?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

So, everybody likes Gene Vincent then, eh? If not, surely we all got a little love for Buddy Holly.

So, far JB is the only one out there it looks like everybody's giving a chance to.

¥

christoff (christoff), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like Buddy Holly, sorry.

What bold type? Re the thread, it's nice for once to be able to say I don't like, REM, Stone Roses, Elvis & Nirvana...and not get into trouble.

Erm, should I get me coat?

Jez, Friday, 20 September 2002 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Sammy Davis Jnr?

kinski (kinski), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

''I think there's a Minuteman/Minutemen confusion going on.''

OK minutemen were a band on SST who released the best alb evah (OK maybe not but it's a v v good rec) ('Double nickels on the dime'). the other band is a recent thing and I heard one single which I thought was a joke (in a bad way).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm down with Sammy, man. I love that cat. You know that.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

there was bold type, i swear. it's gone though.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Tom, I don't hate Madonna.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I shoot down: Chackha Khan (occasional good stuff w/ Rufus doesn't excuse dreary solo career), Motorhead (like the occasional song, but too repetitive for me to LOVE 'em), Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Britney Spears, Bon Jovi, and for what it's worth Gene Loves Jezebell and Queen.

Now, if we assume that dave225 wasn't serious about not liking all candidates xcept James Brown (tho he could be, correct me if I'm wrong dave) that leaves us with:

James Brown

The Bay City Rollers

GWAR

The Cure

Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps

The Spinners

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes

Little Richard

Al Green

Buzzcocks

Undertones

The Shangri-Las

The Clash

Magazine

Louis Prima

The Skatalites

New Vauderville Band

Slade

Chic

Human League

St.Etienne

David Bowie

The Ronnetes

Mercury Rev

Johnny Cash

Can

AC/DC

Huey Lewis & The News

Madonna

Brian Eno

Marvin Gaye

Big Audio Dynamite

The Firm

The Bangles

Was Not Was

Joy Division

Abruptum

And, oddly enough:

Ted Nungent

Sproyton Layer

Eminem

Anal Count

Sammy Davis Jr.

(Graham's pre-1990 ban is just a sad and shows how out of touch he is with The Kids- I should know, I'm one.)

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 20 September 2002 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

... I was serious... not that I don't like all of the above.. but I thought that they had all been shot down in some form... Except for the ones that I'm shooting down:
Gene Vincent, Bay City Rollers, Ted Nugent, Sproyton Layer, Eminem, Anal Cunt, GWAR, The Spinners, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Undertones, New Vaudeville Band, Slade, The Firm..

Can't say I love any of them. There are others that I can't say I love, but don't really have a problem with...

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I really do only like about three records made before 1990, is this so hard to understand?

the cure. peeoww!

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Well actually, yes! Cos there are tons of great records before 1990! Obv!

Sarah (starry), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I think everybody secretly loves BARRY WHITE ok ok at least the song that was on Ally McBeal when she dances about in those WHACKY unisex bogz0r.

I wd like to think everyone likes KATE BUSH but when faced with some of the Lionheart/Hounds of Luv (hammer)HORRORS I cd see why they do not.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Well no one's bothered to tell me about them.

Oh hang on, Barry White wins. End of thread.

"how can you possibly nominate the Stones with their 25+ year track record of complete and utter shit
but this "they recorded some crap stuff therefore they are DISQUALIFIED" thing is ridiculous. I defy anyone to name me a musician who didn't disgrace themselves on record at least once.

Contradiction, Shaky Mo? ;-) "

Sorry Ned, but my Rolling Stones comment was directed at AlexinNYC, who developed the "recording of crap=disqualified" rubrick. His nomination of the Rolling Stones is *his* contradiction (since he doesn't deny they've put out tons of embarassing shit). I wouldn't disqualify the Stones on those grounds, but Alex should have. I disqualify the Stones on the grounds that they really just aren't that fantastic, even at their peak. I don't love them. I'm sure there's plenty of people here who hate them.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 20 September 2002 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone hate the Undertones, Chuck Berry, or New Order?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think James Brown, despite Graham, is as clear a victor as we can have, which as I'm sure you can all guess is a-ok by me.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Kool and the Gang has been fully shot down.

What about Fela? Afrika Bambaataa? Portishead? Massive Attack?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

If we are looking for something everyone likes, we have to accept blanket dismissals like Graham's, and we are almost certainly doomed. If we are looking for something no one dislikes, we don't, since we have no evidence that Graham (not wanting to pick on you, Graham, but yours is the clearest and hugest blanket!) is familiar with, say, Louis Prima.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

did anyone say phil spector last time ?

piscesboy, Friday, 20 September 2002 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we'll have to wait for Graham to say he specifically dislikes James Brown before the final vote.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 20 September 2002 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

He's bound to love some 1990's record that samples "Funky Drummer", anyway...I say we elect James Brown our brand new funky president!

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 21 September 2002 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"I really do only like about three records made before 1990, is this so hard to understand?"

It is hard to understand, actually. Is it because it's "before your era" or something? Might it be that you simply haven't heard *ENOUGH* music that was recorded prior to 1990? Also, it's not like 1990 was some crucial watermark year like 1969 or 1977 (or ever 1994). Why 1990?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 September 2002 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm officially shooting down Kool & the Gang. Apart from "Jungle Boogie," they have precious little in their catalogue worth salvaging (especially nonsense like "She's Fresh").

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 September 2002 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe we should re-jigger this to say SPECIFIC ALBUMS that everone loves....this would eschew the whole "yeah, well their later work was crap" argument (an argument I used, incidentally).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 September 2002 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

And I realised the other day I don't like T.Rex either.

Tom, you hurt me in my heart.

(Anyone veto Marvin Gaye yet? Actually, I'm remembering--it seems someone did.)

Cheap Trick, though. It seems hard to imagine disliking those first three CT albums...and I think every band Barrus mentioned, besides the Minutemen, are pretty unimpeachable, but I know people who dislike em each and all...)

We just fucking love Manchester, okay?

How about if we narrow "Bowie" down to "Eno+Bowie"? That should do the trick, no?

I have my Bowie affections exactly backward from the ILM hivemind, it seems. (Loving "Let's Dance" and "China Girl" for example, but having no use for "Young Americans" and basically no interest in hearing "Space Oddity" ever again.)

But in addition, does anyone on ILM dislike Super Furry Animals?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

Um, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but saying you don't like David Bowie, especially saying you actually dislike David Bowie, given his MASSIVE influence on music and other assorted social implications (i.e. don't think for a second that DB didn't single-handedly cut a serious chunk of anti-gay preconceptions out of mainstream rock radio in his career), is kind of like saying you're really not all that with it, know what I mean? It's ok if you don't, but, you know, you're saying a lot of other things there, too.

It's like saying "I don't get Kraftwerk". The only response to that is I bet you don't get a lot of things...

jsoulja (jsoulja), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

I try to get into Bowie every now and then, but I get rather bored with the music.

If I want glam I go T. Tex instead. If I want proto-new wave: I go Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt and Eno and Roxy Music. If I want theatrical art-rock I go Peter Hammill and Vandergraaf. If I want a record that is better proto-punk than Bowie I go Nadir's Last Chance. If I want weird psych-folk then, again, I go Tyrannosaurus Rex or even Tim Buckley. If I want orchestral, showtune weirdness then I go Scott Walker. If I want the best street-wise rock I go VU's Loaded. If I ever want guitar madness then I go the Sweet Sister Ray bootleg. Not to mention Alex Harvey, Steve Harley, Alice Cooper, the Cockettes, and Jobriath all fit in here somewhere.

Call us folks who don't suck Bowie's dick clueless but everywhere you turn are artists with greater vision than Bowie whom he cannibalized so he could turn himself into some mythical rock star legend.

As for the the "gay issue" so to speak, the Cockettes are super-esoteric but they challenged anti-gay stereotypes more radically than Bowie ever did.

I only dislike Super Furry Animals a little.

i'm overstating my case up there, since i own and really, really like several bowie albums. there's a little devil's advocate in that post. i don't hate him. but he's boring much of the time and even his two disc hits comp really starts to suck ass after the early-'80s. i think his place in the canon is overstated to a large degree but then again that goes for the beatles and the stones and hendrix and all those canon guys.

Call us folks who don't suck Bowie's dick clueless but everywhere you turn are artists with greater vision than Bowie whom he cannibalized so he could turn himself into some mythical rock star legend.

Ok, this is pretty much spot on, and he's admitted as much, but that's part of his brilliance. Musicians are almost always the product of their influences- it's what influences they choose and how they build from them that defines their greatness. Bowie's choice of influences were exceptional, and in the process of chasing them he created his own unique vision.

As for the the "gay issue" so to speak, the Cockettes are super-esoteric but they challenged anti-gay stereotypes more radically than Bowie ever did.

Yeah but they never cracked mainstream pop and rock radio the way Bowie did. Disco-bashing, gun rack sporting, "Stones Rule!" "Stairway To Heaven is the best song EVER!" guys grew up listening to Bowie tracks and still loved him enough to keep him in that arena, despite all those rumors that he and Mick Jagger were playing leap frog, despite the fact that DB's stage persona had some serious ponce leanings.

Stand up to the crowd! Who cares what they think. If you like something, it shouldn't matter whether everyone else does or not. Who is more of a creature of the crowd: the one who sheepishly follows the crowd taste, or the one who always has a knee-jerk reaction against it?

Well, their songs usually just never seemed to me to have SONGS attached, which was the problem, I guess. They always just seemed like clinicians to me, laying down Funky Grooves in a workmanlike fashion I couldn't imagine why anybody particularly cared about (better for sampling, I guess, than for actually listening to.)

I wonder exactly what Lex's aversion is apropos mixed-gender groups?

mixed-gender pop groups - abba, s club, steps - usually come with this blue peter sheen to them which really distracts from any emotional import their lyrics would have in the hands of others; also the men, especially if they sing, tend to be completely superfluous to proceedings. i like songs here and there by all the above groups, but as entities i'm not particularly enthused.

I don't object too much to The Ramones although I do have a problem with how they were playing basically the same song through their first four albums.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 6 July 2006 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

Oh and I forgot X, although I guess there could be some here that don't like them.

Nina Simone.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Thursday, 6 July 2006 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

Seeing as how Geir's "opinion doesn't count" James Brown and The Ramones do seem like fairly sensible answers. I've never heard anyone seriously say "I fucking hate The Ramones".

Marmot 4-Tay: forth-coming, my child. forth-coming most righteous champion (mar, Thursday, 6 July 2006 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

Flaming Lips is one of the silliest answers on this thread yet.

Someone has vetoed New Order = this feat is beyond us.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 6 July 2006 08:56 (eighteen years ago)

madonna, surely! i mean maybe not madonna NOW but i can't imagine that anyone would loathe the whole of madonna's career.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 6 July 2006 08:57 (eighteen years ago)

Oh come on, don't be ridiculous. Of course there are Madonna haters here.

Jackson 5 (as opposed to solo Michael Jackson) is probably one of the closest calls, although I'm not sure what Shakey Mo or Alex in NYC have to say about them.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 6 July 2006 09:00 (eighteen years ago)

who's a madonna hater! TELL ME WHO THESE AWFUL PEOPLE ARE I DO NOT KNOW THEM. i've seen hate for her current direction and hate for individual songs but everyone loves one madonna period surely.

A few good soldiers have mentioned Talking Heads, but the haters remain hidden in their foxholes. I'm flying the TH flag right now, haters. Shoot, dammit, shoot!

Also - no hate for Madonna here. She's like a virgin. And a whore. What more do you want in a musician?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 6 July 2006 09:40 (eighteen years ago)

i love music! i think the answer should be ciara.

are talking heads boys with guitars?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 6 July 2006 09:43 (eighteen years ago)

you couldn't really wittle it down to that, although yes there are some guitars.

imagine about 20 people jumping around choreographically and playing energetic slap-bass driven post-punk with world beat stuff and backing singers, with the guy out of funkadelic on guitar and fronted by a skinny prep-nerd in a giant suit with a look about him like he's just worked out how to crash the stockmarket with the press of a button.

80s Prince seems like a winner - but it's a bit reductive/cheating to not consider the artist's entire output. even there tho the great stuff is so great that can even the bad stuff make one not love Prince?

I can get behind the Jackson 5, whoever up there was wondering. They did "I'll Bet You" on their first record, which is a plus. And in general I'm a big fan of that early- to mid-70s Motown production sound.

How about Yo La Tengo?

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Thursday, 6 July 2006 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

yo la tengo have some good songs and one or two classy albums even but to say that you "love" them suggests that your sum experience with the emotion consists of having made out with your hand a few times when you were 12

if that's supposed to be aimed at me (is it?), it's just kinda stupid to keep going on this because clearly the answer is "no," and so what's left is a bunch of dudes pointlessly announcing "hey, i like this band!" "hey! i like a different band!" ad nauseum. it's another lame list thread, except the listed items have nothing to do with each other. i mean, unless you actually think that EVERYONE loves elvis costello, which of course you don't!

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

Oh please. You're enjoying this thread as much as the next guy. It's just a kid's game, and it's not gonna end until everyone picks up their marbles and leaves. Plus, you (not you specifically) can't help but WANT there to be some elusive artist that's universally loved.

cosmo vitelli (cosmo vitelli), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'm more mystified that people keep bringing up bands (Yo La Tengo, EC, Talking Heads, etc.) who have already been unceremoniously drummed out of the running... however yes, obviously the answer is "no" there is no band that everyone loves because there's always someone like Geir with a weird politico-aesthetic agenda who will refuse to see any value in a given canonical performer. With Geir its James Brown, with dance-lovin indie haterz its probably the Velvets or something...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 July 2006 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

i think the answer to this is "The Field"

Who?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 19 April 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)

adam and his ants band

Alan, Thursday, 19 April 2007 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

Adam & The Ants were just about image, not music.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 19 April 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

Can think of quite a few people that will hate that once they hear it. Sounds okay if you like electronica though

the Dirt, Thursday, 19 April 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno; I keep getting these indistinguishable promos in the mail - the Field, Field Music, Freezing Field etc. - and they all sound like bad Beta Band impersonations.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 19 April 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

i'm sure i remember some music from the adam & his ants band

Alan, Thursday, 19 April 2007 12:58 (eighteen years ago)

The "music" all sounded alike and was generally very tuneless.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 19 April 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno; I keep getting these indistinguishable promos in the mail - the Field, Field Music, Freezing Field etc. - and they all sound like bad Beta Band impersonations.

You are, I think, confusing them with Fields.

braveclub, Thursday, 19 April 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

lol. that's a thread in itself - bad bands with "field" in the name

just spitballing... Sonic Youth? Prince?

the Dirt, Thursday, 19 April 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

The "music" all sounded alike and was generally very tuneless.

yet infinitely more entertaining than today's popular AOR bands.

Os Mutantes?

Interestingly, if you google "I Hate Kraftwerk", most results are duplicates of someone saying "I Hate Kraftwerk... Not!"

the next grozart, Thursday, 19 April 2007 13:18 (eighteen years ago)

the only proper google hit for "i hate adam and the ants" is class:

A similar game to kippering is the game of 'Aaaaah'! To win a round of Aaaah, simply get someone to correct a blatantly false statement. For example;

A and B are listenind to the radio. Wham!'s hit single Careless Whisper begins playing.
A : I hate Adam and the Ants
B : This isn't Adam and...
A : Aaaaah!

The Field, Fields, it all blurs into one shade of Hampshire puce.

Not like the good old days of the mighty FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM!!!!!!

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 19 April 2007 13:23 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno; I keep getting these indistinguishable promos in the mail - the Field, Field Music, Freezing Field etc. - and they all sound like bad Beta Band impersonations.

Really, if you can't hear the difference between The Field and Field Music, maybe its time to hang this whole "music" thing up, no?

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 19 April 2007 13:23 (eighteen years ago)

In some cases, life really is too short.

Field Mice, though, they were a nifty combo.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 19 April 2007 13:28 (eighteen years ago)

Whigfield?

NickB, Thursday, 19 April 2007 13:28 (eighteen years ago)

The Whigfields of the Nephilim would be awesome.

NickB, Thursday, 19 April 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

Gracie Fields of the Nephilim.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 19 April 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

There are no popular AOR bands today.

Yes there are. Any guitar music popular with people over 18 qualifies in this argument. Adam & His Ants are better than all of them.

blueski, Thursday, 19 April 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

How about Field Mob, Field Day or Fieldwork? That word is starting to lose its meaning.

modestmickey, Thursday, 19 April 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

Beethoven's a good bet too, but I suspect you'd start a flame war with that on a classical music board

Huh? I'm sure some exist but, speaking as a classical musician, I've never met a classical musician or fan who didn't admire at least some Beethoven. Many people would say that some famous pieces like "Fur Elise" are overrated though.

Sundar, Thursday, 19 April 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

Ditto. I've hardly ever heard anyone with bad things to say about LvB, discounting those who would foolishly write off classical music altogether.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Thursday, 19 April 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

99% of British guitar music to thread.

What wouldn't be classified as AOR in 1980 isn't AOR today either. Music is timeless. Genres don't change.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 19 April 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

Btw. Beethoven I did pick on purpose. You will have those who consider Bach and Handel "too pompous and affected", Mozart and Haydn "too simple and too twee" and most post-Beethoven classical "too complex".

Beethoven sort of fits between all those.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 19 April 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

Mozart - "too simple". sure.

willem, Thursday, 19 April 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

Leonard Cohen!

I'm embarrased to suggest ABBA, Elvis Presley got to me finally, I'll bet everybody likes at least one Dean Martin song, does anyone hate Madness? I think T Rex was probably the best suggestion

If you'd suggested daft punk 3 years ago - I'd have agreed - but now I couldn't bear to listen to any track,

I'm off to find an os mutants track now - never heard of them :)

roger whitaker, Friday, 20 April 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

Ah yes, teh Os Mutants.

I gotta agree with Avalanches, though.

All different types of people go in for them. Even bogans.

Drooone, Friday, 20 April 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

You've gotta come at this thing sideways: apart from maybe Geir, I bet everyone here would at least sorta like Ayalew Mesfin's "Gud Aderegetchegn."

nabisco, Friday, 20 April 2007 07:24 (eighteen years ago)

Never heard of it.

mmmmmm, based on the fragment here (track 14) I'm not convinced.

Adam & The Ants were just about image, not music.

But but the tunes! Melodic ones, too! Goody Two Shoes, Ant Music, Prince Charming, all wonderful pop singles. Two drum kits, people!

aww nabisco, i <3 alayew mesfin!

pretzel walrus, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

Actually I have heard it, I just didn't know the title or artist. I must check out some of those Ethiopiques compilations.

Good record that.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

i just went through this whole thing and didn't see sly and the family stone, which is odd. but now that geir's here that might get shot down.

Haikunym said this. He is right. About both bits, sadly.

Scik Mouthy, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not sure i like sly and the family stone either for some reason. Maybe I haven't heard enough but what I did hear wasn't quite as funky and tough as I'd expected it to be.

the next grozart, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

wasn't being entirely serious with the LvB remark. What I mean is you'll probably get a whole other discussion about him on a classical music board. On here, there's simply not enough people who care.

Honestly, the only way this discussion could ever be relevant, would be if it were limited to popular music, and preferrably stuff that 'everyone' listens to. Not that hard to find something that no-one would object to simply on the account of never having heard it. "Who doesn't like Monk & Canatella?"

the Dirt, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

not that I mean people've never heard Beethoven.

Monk & Canatella were pretty good actually.
