The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 4 May 2012 00:00 (thirteen years ago)

That top albums list is pretty much exactly how I thought it was going to turn out!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 4 May 2012 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, it wasn't much of a contest. I maybe should have made it top 5 albums instead of top 3.

crüt, Friday, 4 May 2012 00:02 (thirteen years ago)

and now the top 40 tracks results. ties are broken first by number of #1 votes, then by number of total votes.

crüt, Friday, 4 May 2012 00:44 (thirteen years ago)

YES!! I absolutely love this track. One of my big non-single highlights from Black Celebration. When this poll was announced, this was one of the first tracks that sprang to my mind immediately as an easy inclusion for my ballot. Really glad this track made it, although unsure whether it's 'too low' yet! There's loads of great songs to come.

crüt, Friday, 4 May 2012 00:55 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't vote for 'Precious', but if we were allowed to vote for 30 or 40 tracks it definitely would have made it in there. A late-period gem.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 4 May 2012 01:00 (thirteen years ago)

"Precious" made my top fifteen.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 4 May 2012 01:00 (thirteen years ago)

I realize Sea of Sin is a b-side, but I was sure it would place higher. I'm just glad it placed at all now!

Most pre-Construction DM is all a haze to me, but Dreaming of You and Photographic are pretty good. Glad I finally got the motivation to check them out.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 May 2012 01:26 (thirteen years ago)

'Photographic' was my #10. This track and indeed most of the Speak & Spell album remind me of being very little. My dad had Speak & Spell on vinyl, and I have a vivid early memory of running around the living room with my little sister to this track as the record crackled away in the background(!). When I got into my early teens and started getting to the age that I was beginning to listen to music a little more deeply, I fell totally into love with its pure synthpop sound.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 4 May 2012 01:27 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, 'Love, In Itself' placed. I find that more surprising than 'Sea Of Sin' placing for some reason. I definitely think 'Here Is The House', for one, is a superior song.

I've never really been too keen on the album/single versions of 'Useless'. I absolutely adore that Kruder & Dorfmeister session version, though!

Ah yeah, the little instrumental break... nice little snatch of piano in there as well!

I suppose 'Love, In Itself', like most of Construction Time Again does have an adventurous spirit to its production and this exciting sense of branching out and trying to move forward and do something different to what they'd done previously. It's down there as one of my least favourite '80s Depeche singles, though.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 4 May 2012 01:42 (thirteen years ago)

Ah yes, and there it is! The one that Martin Gore famously sang in the studio with his dick hanging out!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 4 May 2012 01:43 (thirteen years ago)

crüt is OTM, love them just exploring that new Synclavier

Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Friday, 4 May 2012 01:43 (thirteen years ago)

The one that Martin Gore famously sang in the studio with his dick hanging out!

Come again? I've never heard that story!

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 May 2012 01:47 (thirteen years ago)

well, he supposedly recorded the vocals while completely naked. it'd be funnier if he had just sang it with his dick hanging out.

crüt, Friday, 4 May 2012 01:48 (thirteen years ago)

crüt, Friday, 4 May 2012 01:49 (thirteen years ago)

The three big 'Depeche explores the sampler' tracks for me are 'Pipeline' (of course!), 'People Are People' and possibly 'Stripped', where they set up the microphones to sample fireworks on Bonfire Night.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 4 May 2012 01:50 (thirteen years ago)

It's one of those famous Depeche Mode stories. When Martin Gore did his vocal track for 'Somebody', he was apparently completely naked. I don't think the rest of the band were watching though, I remember hearing that he did his vocal well out of the way in another room.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 4 May 2012 01:53 (thirteen years ago)

x-post yeah but the charm of "Love, In Itself" is that it's before they reached the more mature approach they took with those tracks, instead being rather "press this key for guitar doodle-oodles"

crüt, Friday, 4 May 2012 01:54 (thirteen years ago)

I do agree with crut, though, it'd be a hell of a lot more funnier if it had literally just been his dick hanging out.

My #13. I've always loved hearing stories about the recording of 'People Are People'. The way they achieved that MASSIVE sound, by sending different sounds to loud PA systems in different rooms of the studio. So loud that apparently the building was shaking! People can say what they like about the lyrics, the track has a hell of a fucking kick to it. I like to listen to this track LOUD.

My #11. Far too strong to have been a mere B-side, and thankfully the band thought the same. I think that's Daniel Miller doing the 'over and done with, over and done with' bits in the intro.

lol "Love, In Itself"! Honestly did not see that coming

Dan, being himself

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:45 (thirteen years ago)

also lol @ "Here Is The House" coming in at the bottom of the poll, considering it would have been the 21st song on my ballot ("The Things You Said" would have been 22)

so far I voted for:

"Sea of Sin"
"Precious"
"Somebody" (#1) (you fuckers)
"Fly on the Windscreen"

my biggest "wait, WAHT" is a tie between "Love, In Itself" (which I actually like a lot, I just think it's super goofy and not as good as many of their other songs) and "Sweetest Perfection" (which really is Violator's rough spot for me; I don't DISLIKE it but every other song on the album is just sooooooo much better)

I was one of the #1 votes for "Somebody," in deference to the number of mixtapes I put that song on in my teens and 20s. Still gets me.

"Love, in Itself" snuck into the lower reaches of my ballot (just above "A Question of Lust" actually). Always sounds like a Madonna song to me.

I'm happy with the songs from my ballot that have placed so far, and happy furthermore that I got Sea of Sin and Clean into the top 40.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 4 May 2012 05:54 (thirteen years ago)

These images are so good!

Ismael Klata, Friday, 4 May 2012 06:15 (thirteen years ago)

Fucking hell, I've been really busy lately and didn't even realize this poll was happening. Maybe it's just as well since I would have driven myself crazy trying to rank DM songs (except for "Enjoy the Silence" at #1).

Great results so far ... nice to see that "Sea of Sin" made it. "Precious", "Dreaming of Me", and "The Things You Said" are all too low. The first two I can understand, but I thought ILM worships "Music for the Masses"? I mean, "Sweetest Perfection" made the top 40, are we going to see every "Violator" track on here??

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 4 May 2012 06:20 (thirteen years ago)

Things You Said = way too low!

piscesx, Friday, 4 May 2012 07:54 (thirteen years ago)

<3 the things you said but it ended up being pushed down out of my 20. it's an affecting track but when i was listening to everything all over again i just thought it was a bit less musically gripping than the rest.

re: sea of sin, interesting that on first listen it doesn't grab me any more than their recent material, doesn't seem to have the violator touch of magic. is it me? is my love of violator & other early dm due to a time and place that for me is lost and gone forever?

sadface btw if the rest of the poll is run out during uk bedtime.

Touché Gödel (ledge), Friday, 4 May 2012 09:21 (thirteen years ago)

Good start to the list. Thought Precious might be a bit higher, still I'm glad it made it.

Here is the House, Fly on the Windscreen and A Question of Lust are the three tracks I voted for from Black Celebration.

Wonder if Violator will be this poll's Innervisions having all its tracks place.

Surprised at Useless placing, it gives me hope that my number one will place which is from the same album.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 4 May 2012 09:49 (thirteen years ago)

Two more tracks from Ultra I'm really hoping will place.

Touché Gödel (ledge), Friday, 4 May 2012 09:52 (thirteen years ago)

Me too. People Are People is the only one of mine to place so far. I had to tweak my ballot to bump it right up near the top - couldn't get it out my head for days, and realised I had it way too low when I found myself bellowing it out loud while walking round the shops.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 4 May 2012 10:00 (thirteen years ago)

Mine that have placed so far and the ranking I gave them:

15 - Dreaming of Me
19 - Love, In Itself
17 - Somebody
10 - People are People

wolf kabob (ENBB), Friday, 4 May 2012 10:37 (thirteen years ago)

Five of mine so far.
Useless - only for the K&D remix.
A Question of Lust - my favourite Martin Gore ballad - love "I need to drink more than you seem to think before I'm anyone's"
Photographic - my #4 - wonderfully harsh - on speaking terms with Warm Leatherette
Precious - the most persuasive of their 00s songs
Fly on the Windscreen - Squarely targeted at the depressive teenage me: "Death is everywhere"

Get wolves (DL), Friday, 4 May 2012 12:10 (thirteen years ago)

I would have voted for the Pouppée Fabrikk version of "Photographic":

http://youtu.be/_B8BOYjzEns

I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Friday, 4 May 2012 12:14 (thirteen years ago)

Ha ha. Classic "scary" German industrial voice.

The Rex the Dog remixes are both very good.

Get wolves (DL), Friday, 4 May 2012 12:36 (thirteen years ago)

sadface btw if the rest of the poll is run out during uk bedtime.

ooh, sorry! I'll try to start counting down 25-11 as soon as I get home from work, which will probably still be a little late for UK folx but not as late as last night. the top 10 will definitely roll out during UK afternoon/evening, though.

crüt, Friday, 4 May 2012 13:18 (thirteen years ago)

cool, thanks. not that i might not be out anyway, if i manage to get a social life, but good to have the option.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Friday, 4 May 2012 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

any love for Dangerous? loads better than Sea Of Sin if we're talking Violator B sides.

piscesx, Friday, 4 May 2012 15:05 (thirteen years ago)

I like Dangerous but NO WAY is it better than either Sea of Sin or Happiest Girl

I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Friday, 4 May 2012 15:07 (thirteen years ago)

seven of my picks have already appeared. but my ballot was very unimaginative. i'm glad i didn't include "enjoy the silence" though. something about how the word "very" is pronounced in the chorus always rubbed me the wrong way.

charlie h, Friday, 4 May 2012 15:11 (thirteen years ago)

Ok I listened to all the Violator b-sides this morning and all the vocal ones sounded equally poor to my ears. Truly awful lyrics and seemingly just not much time spent on production, idk if given as much spit and polish as Enjoy the Silence was they'd have improved but basically they sounded like cheap 90s euro pop dance.

Touché Gödel (ledge), Friday, 4 May 2012 15:12 (thirteen years ago)

also, why is there an annoying lag at the end of "enjoy the silence" before the segue into the much superior "policy of truth"?

charlie h, Friday, 4 May 2012 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

that'd be "Interlude #2 – Crucified" – 1:52 (hidden song starting at 4:21)

Touché Gödel (ledge), Friday, 4 May 2012 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

(maybe they consider the remix coda of "Personal Jesus" to be Interlude #1?)

I like 'Dangerous' a lot, but I ended up not voting for it in the end. It was definitely a contender, though!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 4 May 2012 16:22 (thirteen years ago)

something about how the word "very" is pronounced in the chorus always rubbed me the wrong way

???

Pacific Trash Vortex (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 4 May 2012 16:55 (thirteen years ago)

like Roy Hodgson?

Ismael Klata, Friday, 4 May 2012 17:00 (thirteen years ago)

"very unnecessary" used to bother me on the grounds of awkward redundancy, but then I decided that in context it may be deliberate awkward redundancy, so I let it go.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 4 May 2012 17:26 (thirteen years ago)

isn't it a Salt n Pepa album?

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 4 May 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

'very unnecessary' not nearly as bad as 'pass undetectedly' from sweetest perfection.

Touché Gödel (ledge), Friday, 4 May 2012 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, i guess i have a problem with the phrasing in the chorus, so it's to do with the whole "very unnecessary" detail. seems a bit contrary to the flow of the song. it may be to do with Dave Gahan's voice which is quite hardened in tone, but when DM get verbose i always pick up on it in the intonation and notice the extra syllables.

charlie h, Friday, 4 May 2012 21:53 (thirteen years ago)

Isn't the bigger problem that is words are very unnecessary, then why does the song have lyrics? btw that song is a perfect treasure

Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Friday, 4 May 2012 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

It is impossible for me to sing along with it without looking/sounding like an ass tho

Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Friday, 4 May 2012 22:05 (thirteen years ago)

i really like the lyrical idea in that song, but yeah it goes about saying it in quite a clunky way imo

charlie h, Friday, 4 May 2012 22:13 (thirteen years ago)

anyway, i am enjoying the poll. it's been quite the black celebration celebration so far and i voted for 3 of the songs that have appeared from that album.

charlie h, Friday, 4 May 2012 22:17 (thirteen years ago)

DM can be quite a ponderous band, but that's one of their charms.

I know various members of Depeche Mode consider this to be one of their worst songs, but I can think of Depeche Mode songs that I dislike more.

It's not even close to being their worst song, even among singles, "It's Called a Heart", "It's Only When I Lose Myself" and maybe "See You" (sorry to the eleven people who voted for it) are worse.

24. (194 points / 9 votes): Home

Pleasantly surprised here ... it's not that Ultra isn't great, but that I don't think there's much consensus on what the best songs are (a big disadvantage in polls).

I do love It's No Good, even if I was influenced a bit by Alfred's takedown on the voting thread. The video is something else though - loads of laughs (including said smarmy face). Sometimes I'd say it's my favourite clip ever, but there're a lot of other Depeche clips pushing it hard.

So happy to see Home make it. I gave it my number one vote. As I said in the other thread, the combination of those beautiful strings and the incredible vocal gets me everytime. Really happy to see Lie to me place so high too, great song.

See You is the only song in the list so far that I really just don't like at all. I've always hated how lazy the chorus sounds, it's the same problem I have with The Meaning of Love.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 5 May 2012 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

Walking In My Shoes is a classic piece of songwriting, terrific to bellow out passionately. I really like the long ebowed coda too. It reminds me of another tune from the era, Suede's 'Europe Is Our Playground', which ends on a similar guitar figure. Any other songs like this, structurally?

This period had no trouble crossing over to Miami radio stations because deejays knew how fabulous Company B sounded next to "Strangelove."

whoa ultimate radio station

Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:27 (thirteen years ago)

seriously that swankass sleazy hook (probably the closest depeche mode come to jam-lewis right?), the casual kinkiness of the lyrics, that vague air of doom. i was 13 when 'strangelove' hit (and it hit BIG on mtv) and it felt mysteriously dirty and vulgar in a way that unnerved me; i listened to ALOT of 2 live crew and as vulgar as they were they also basically allowed me to think that at 13 via playground scuttlebutt, 80s teen comedies, and stolen playboys and penthouses i had a fairly good grip so to speak on sex. 'strangelove' hinted that i didn't know ANYTHING.

balls, Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:27 (thirteen years ago)

I have this very deep desire for a Señor Coconut-tyle album of DM covers, esp. Strangelove, which I think would sound fabulous on a marimba.

Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

strangelove is really about relationships, not sex

crüt, Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

no, I guess that came out wrong. there's definitely sex there, written purposefully in away so that the song can be interpreted in a sexual way, but it's really about being mean to a loved one and awaiting the pain that will be returned

oh yeah there's a sweetness and, um, emotional depth there that's not present in something like say 'sex dwarf' (waiting to have someone correct me by telling me that 'sex dwarf' despite its title has basically the same theme as 'the living years'). no way i was hearing that in 1987.

Often, the first track on an album loses its appeal just because you hear it so many time. Not in this case.

Most disappointed in Insight not placing - I guess it was a long shot. Ok the 'spirit of love' chorus is kinda balls but vocally it's one of their best imo. A Gahan/Gore duet (after the first verse), on headphones it's just immense, especially the moment at 2:25 when Gore appears up close and personal in the right channel.

There are songs that I didn't vote for that I look at on the results and I think 'yeah, I can definitely understand why it's in there, and I probably would have voted for it myself if I'd had the space'.

'Love, In Itself', 'Useless', 'Lie To Me', 'Get The Balance Right!' and 'But Not Tonight' = not worthy of a placing in a Top 40 Depeche tracks list, IMO.

six years pass...

Among the best of boy bands; only One Direction beats them in the number of good songs per album.

one year passes...

It turns out my wife had never seen "101," so we watched it tonight. I actually watch it every few years, and each time I'm elated by the end. Just a wonderful snapshot. So many great songs and performances. Love that it even gives a glimpse of mundane behind the scenes money stuff, something these movies rarely delve into.

It's odd, I've never considered myself a particularly big fan, but there is more stuff from this band that I love than there is from bands I love more. In fact, some of my happiest moments as a consumer (as gauche as that scans) were when those reissues came out, each sounding impeccable and each packaged with those absolutely illuminating documentaries. Helped me appreciate the band even more.

two years pass...

I hadn't heard all of Songs of Faith and Devotion til this year. The arrangement of the non-ballads slowly add and remove instrumental parts that are often so noisy they don't function as hooks when first heard. It doesn't cohere until the last minute or so of each song, when suddenly all of these noises and sounds are combined for a big finish, at which point the song lurches about like a beast composed from diverse monstrous parts, demanding astonishment!
Obviously a lot of this structure came about because they were trying to combine current electronics and the popular guitar sounds of the era.

I overlooked this album for a long time because I wanted more of it to be like "Walking in My Shoes" and "In Your Room", but pretty much every song on it is very good. "In Your Room" matches your description, I don't think it fully clicked with me until I'd heard the song a couple times and knew where it was going

I don’t hate it but I feel it’s indirectly responsible for a lot of music I do hate (eg: nu metal with the on the red mastering, clipped beats, turntable scratches, distorted synth, ugly big guitars)
