Su-su-suspiria, obviously. Too obvious to even really mention, I guess, but we might as well get it out of the way.
Not necessarily as a standalone soundtrack, but the Radiophonic sound-work on The Stone Tape is magnificent...

Children of the Corn is classic and has Linda Hamilton singing on one track.House at the Edge of the Dark has a cool Gobliny vibe and is super fun to listen to when you're going for a walk through a sunny residential neighborhood.
I'm trying to list all of the best ones for people who have not yet discovered how wonderful they are, so we need to mention them ALL. Suspiria FOR SURE.

Candyman (Glass) is pretty good too.
I was pretty disappointed in the music for The Wicker Tree, btw. The songs themselves were...ok, and the scoring was super syrupy and distracting. Could have been hammy, but in a different way.
― former personal denim advisor to the mayor, (La Lechera), Thursday, 10 May 2012 15:13 (thirteen years ago)
The Wicker Man is up there with Suspiria for obviousness, but if this is comprehensive, then HELL YES, that soundtrack is so so great.
― emil.y, Thursday, 10 May 2012 15:15 (thirteen years ago)
My brain has completely blanked on non-obvious stuff, to be honest. I might have to skim through the record collection and see what else I've got.
(Oh, not one film specifically, but would recommend the Bollywood Bloodbath comp, which has tracks from Bollywood horrors.)
― emil.y, Thursday, 10 May 2012 15:16 (thirteen years ago)
Seconded on the CANDYMAN score. Very creepy, and the movie itself was surprisingly effective.
Some great sound design in the first HELLRAISERS, but the score itself doesn't seem that memorable.
HALLOWEEN should get some ups, too.
― Matt M., Thursday, 10 May 2012 15:17 (thirteen years ago)
Thanks for the discussion about this in the poll thread, btw. I don't know why I've never really thought about procuring horror scores before (especially no-brainers like Creepshow, whose music I LOVE). But I guess I have a new thing to get all obsessive about now.
Badalamenti's Lynch scores (particularly Mulholland Dr.) are great, as is Eraserhead.
I know it's totally cheating, but Broadcast and The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age seems very much as if it were intended to sound like a horror score/soundtrack from the '60s/'70s. Very creepy and great and well worth checking out if you dig horror scores. But then I could probably spin off a whole other thread of stuff that fits that "soundalike" bill (Comus, Olivia Tremor Control side projects, Pomme Fritz).
― You Don't Throw Oranges On An Escalator (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 10 May 2012 15:23 (thirteen years ago)
Not horror, but I watched Master of the Flying Guillotine/One Armed Boxer 2 last night and was flipping out about the crazy proto sludge electro soundtrack which sounded amazing yet oddly familiat, and then looked it up on imdb and found out that it is literally Neu! songs slowed down to half or quarter speed.

Yay I'm so glad you started this thread LL. I was already working on a post about my top 50 scores from the horror movie poll. It will take me another day or so though.
Yes, there have. From the last few years:
--Conrad Pope, The Presence, 2011. Elegant, sinuous, eerie, with amazing solo writing for bassoon. Tied with Tree Of Life for the best score of 2011 IMO. Pope is John Williams' orchestrator but he has his own voice and color pallete.
--Christopher Gordon, Daybreakers, 2009 (?). Huge, imposing, dark as hell, very original. Gordon has full, natural command of the post-WWII compositional toolbox. He manages here to use the BIG TAIKO DRUMS trope in a non-hackneyed way.
--Marco Beltrami, Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, 2011. This is basically a deliberate and totally successful throwback to the great 70s horror scores of Goldsmith and the Italians.
--Christian Henson, Black Death, 2010. Period instruments, monastic vocalizing and dark-ambient techniques wickedly deployed to create thee doom score of the past decade. Henson seems really promising to me.
--Danny Elfman, The Wolf Man, 2010. Elfman takes the basic vibe of what Kilar did for Coppola's Dracula and boils it radically down to sheer, teeth-gritted, undiluted mid-tempo gypsy death tread.
--Christopher Young, Exorcism Of Emily Rose and Drag Me To Hell. Young is without doubt the horror score king of the post-Goldsmith/Morricone generation. He must have done at least 20 essential horror scores by now. These two sum up his strengths pretty comprehensively. Emily Rose veers between avant shriek-clouds and pellucid dread and passages of Bartokian head-banging and is incessantly inventive. Drag Me is the ultimate descendant of Young's Hellraiser massive slightly camp satanic liturgy style with really cool use of guttural vocalizations and solo violin.
--Michael Giacchino, Let Me In, 2010. Nothing else in Giacchino's generally upbeat, dynamic discography hints at this sound. Its closest kin is Shore's Silence of the Lambs music. He somehow manages to make over an hour of processional-tempo, relentlessly stygian music be engaging and arresting all the way through.
I also really liked the over-the-top assault of the music for Insidious, though I don't have the album. I'm sure I'm forgetting several things above.
xpost Carter Burwell's Blair Witch music is amazing.

Was just listening to bits of the original Texas Chainsaw score on youtube the other day. That and the followup, Eaten Alive, are some really disturbing clanking and banging; great work from Hooper and Wayne Bell. Eraserhead is very effective sound design as well.

All the Argento ones mentioned upthread. I also have a lot of time for Keith Emerson's prog-jazz freakout score to Inferno.
It'd probably be easier to list the gialli whose soundtracks i don't love rather than the ones i do.
Cannibal Holocaust's theme is really quite beautiful - probably the best thing about the film. Fabio Frizzi's Zombi 2 is another classic.
Plus Vampyros Lesbos / She Killed In Ecstasy, of course.

xpost I've tried with Richard Band, he just doesn't seem to do it for me. His treatment of Herrmann's music for Reanimator does nothing useful IMO and his other stuff usually sounds like Goldsmith with less spark. I dunno I'll give him more chances I'm sure. I do like Troll but there again it's such a Goldsmith rip.

I bought the reissue of Rosemary's Baby for myself as a lol mother's day present and (1) I made the mistake of listening to it late at night when I was the only one awake. The dream sequence song with the chanting? I swear I haven't been that scared in a LONG TIME. I was paralyzed in the kitchen, heart racing. THAT is a horror soundtrack.
(2) This morning I looked up Komeda and found this rather interesting documentary about him -- seems pretty good if you are interested in composing, jazz, Polish people, and Hollywood. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZALOroRkcY&feature=related
I also bought Night of the Creeps (which is by the composer responsible for Xanadu and The Warriors, Barry DeVorzon) and it's pretty good, but I've only listened to it once.

Being my own favourite movie soundtrack in general, I would like to add Pino Donaggios soundtrack for Don't look now to the list and strongly advocate for it. For reasons I don't really comprehend this one's relatively unknown in contrast to his other works and equally hard to get. Eventually got hold of a vinyl copy from Australia some years ago.
When I visited Venice in a very foggy February in 2007 with friends, the score was with us all the time. Tremendous experience.

Re: Don't Look Now, it is readily available as a download from eMusic. I've thought about getting it numerous times. I don't really know much Donaggio, and the last time I saw the film was well before I started paying attention to scores.

...This is one of my all time favorite film music pieces. I heard it in The Church, and I was pretty astonished but it is only played briefly and I couldnt find out who it was by. It is Martin Goldray performing Phillip Glass' "Floe". I like it far more than the original Glass version, but sadly it is only included on some versions of the soundtrack and unless it has been reissued recently, it is really hard to find the complete version. ...I'm cheating with videogame soundtracks because this is as good as any film score. The first two Yamaoka Silent Hill soundtracks and Yamane- Castlevania Symphony Of The Night are essential even if you dont care about games (I barely play games anymore but still love the soundtracks).
There is one problem with the first Silent Hill soundtrack cd, since there were so many long tracks, Yamaoka had to mix and edit them together to fit on one cd, so this track is not heard in its full glory. But dont let that put you off. This track used to scare the living shite out of me.

Here is the trailer to Schock with music by Libra, a band which had some members from Goblin. I post the trailer because it has two of the best tracks and this is what I saw that made me get the soundtrack. I still havent seen the actual film. This is essential for Goblin fans and I was pleased that Stephen Thrower (Coil, Cyclobe, horror film scholar) even called it one of the best Goblin soundtracks.
There are two Stephen Thrower links I'm not doing because my computer keeps crashing, but are very much worth a look. One is on his personal block where he gives a picture list of what he considers the essential horror soundtracks, mostly italian stuff. The other is a article at The Guardian which he does an abbreviated version of his lecture on horror soundtracks. Complete with youtube links.

This is the first and only soundtrack I've heard to the original Nosferatu by Art Zoyd. At first it sounded a bit too odd, but the more I watched it, the more sense the music made to the point that I didnt think any of the more traditional soundtracks could better it, even though I havent heard that, so my claim is boldly ignorant. James Bernard has done the most acclaimed version but I really doubt it is as good as this.
Art Zoyd also did Murnau's Faust and I'd love to hear it.

Saw that announcement yesterday. Tempted.
xpost I still don't have James Bernard's Nosferatu score though it's been on my list for awhile. I love his music for The Devil Rides Out and 7 Golden Vampires and of course DRAC-oola, DRAC-oola-DRAC-oola...

--Christian Henson, Black Death, 2010. Period instruments, monastic vocalizing and dark-ambient techniques wickedly deployed to create thee doom score of the past decade. Henson seems really promising to me.finally got this and it's great! Quietly menacing, perfect for the morning imo

Horror music I like that I didn't notice mentioned above:
PAPERHOUSE by Hans ZimmerEYES WITHOUT A FACE by Maurice Jarre
And these movies aren't horror but their soundtracks scratch the same itch:
SUPER 8 by Michael GiaccinoBIRTH by Alexandre DesplatLORD OF THE FLIES by Philippe SardeSUNSHINE by John Murphy
― The Thnig, Friday, 13 July 2012 20:29 (twelve years ago)
Yeah Desplat has yet to do a true horror score. His most disturbing one is probably Hostage.
If you like Sarde LotF you HAVE to have his score for Ghost Story. It's the ultimate in sort of beautiful eery impressionist menace.
― Lewis Apparition (Jon Lewis), Friday, 13 July 2012 21:34 (twelve years ago)
^ "Ghost Story" soundtrack is amazing!!
Desplat's "Birth" soundtrack is used so often as temp music in un-scored movies I can't even deal with that stuff.
― Ówen P., Friday, 13 July 2012 21:55 (twelve years ago)
It's interesting how things assume that status... Is it the bit with the posse of flutes that gets temp-tracked all the time?
I hope Ghost Story gets reissued sometime. I only have mp3s of it and it's been oop forever.
― Lewis Apparition (Jon Lewis), Friday, 13 July 2012 23:43 (twelve years ago)
I'm told by score geeks that the secret ingredient of Ghost Story's score, not to take anything away from Sarde, is the wizardly orchestration by Peter Knight. He also orchestrated Trevor Jones' first few scores (Dark Crystal, Savage Island et al).
― Lewis Apparition (Jon Lewis), Friday, 13 July 2012 23:47 (twelve years ago)
Yes, it's very busy and dated and I love it. ("Ghost Story"). Was recommended just yesterday to check out the Coil "Hellraiser" score, I guess it's a no-brainer but I'd never heard it 'til this morning.
I wish it was the flute cue from "Birth", I love that cue. It's one of the more bucolic ones with strings and a upward spiraling harp line. Desplat drives me nuts, his scores are great, sure, but so many non-music fans walk away thinking he's also responsible for Wagner, Smetena, Britten, etc.
― Ówen P., Saturday, 14 July 2012 18:00 (twelve years ago)
What I mean is that it'll be "Music by Alexandre Desplat" when it's actually 90% Britten ("Moonrise Kingdom") or 0% Desplat ("The Tree of Life") and even though you and I know better you know that the executive branch does not
― Ówen P., Saturday, 14 July 2012 18:01 (twelve years ago)
Listening to the Possession soundtrack RIGHT NOW. I AM VERY TENSE.
― emil.y, Saturday, 14 July 2012 18:42 (twelve years ago)
At least they've moved on from using the REQUIEM FOR A DREAM soundtrack for every movie trailer ever.
― The Thnig, Saturday, 14 July 2012 19:10 (twelve years ago)
Yeah the Tree Of Life thing took some explaining, especially since what Desplat actually wrote was a tie for my favorite score of last year (with Conrad Pope's amazing bassoon-and-ensemble score for the el cheapo horror The Presence). My friend was blown away by the Smetana used in the actual film so I made her a mix CDR of Czech orchestral faves.

I'm a big fan of John Murphy's 28 Weeks Later soundtrack (not to be confused with 28 Days Later). It's unlike most of the other soundtracks mentioned in that it feels more like instrumental rock. But while it's not breaking new ground, I find the slowly building guitars, and the ultimate payoff, pretty pleasurable.

Halloween II and III now on sale on Death Waltz... <3 alan howarth!!
Halloween II
John Carpenter and Alan Howarth managed to do something not many people have been able to do with their score to Halloween II. They managed to take the blueprint of the first films score and make it bigger, bolder, darker and nerve shreddingly intense. Synths wail and stutter as the score progresses to the point where you feel your head might implode from the oncoming onslaught. This score really should be played late at night with all of the lights out. This edition comes with all new artwork by Brandon Schaefer and sleevenotes by Alan Howarth and Brandon Schaefer. The vinyl is orange and black colour in colour effect and it also comes with a variant colourway 12 x 12 lithograph print and a folded A2 poster
Halloween III : Season Of The WitchYou have to bow down before John Carpenter & Alan Howarth. Their score for Halloween III is so far ahead of it's time it's mind boggling. Halloween III is a tour de force of experimental synth tones, intense melodies and dark brooding mood pieces. This is one of my favourite scores of all time and I am honored to have the chance to release it.This edition comes with all new cover art by Jay Shaw and features sleevenotes by Alan Howarth and Jay Shaw. The vinyl comes in an Orange & Black colour in colour effect with a 12 x 12 lithograph and a folded A2 poster of the cover art

I have I and II and I never remember to listen to II. I should fix that.
Howarth recently produced new recordings, using vintage synths, of the Morricone/Carpenter The Thing score and Carpenter's Assault On Precinct 13 with Dark Star. I've been hearing good things about them.

Only SORT OF a horror score, but much too urgent not to bring up here: the impeccable FSM label is down to less than 200 copies of Jerry Goldsmith's amazing music for The Illustrated Man, and there won't be any more pressed.
One of the most inventive and psyched-out things he ever did, absolutely on par with Planet of the Apes and Alien. Unrepentant abstract moog weirdness, coral electric sitars, delicious vocalese, Bartokian chamberisms, luscious 60s studio sound quality.

Yeah I like that title better too. But WG is not a half-bad title.
Other hot tip, Kritzerland is about to do a reissue of the Carrie soundtrack which sold out in like a day when they did it before. It will be just a single CD of the complete score this time though, the 2nd cd with the shorter album program won't be included. I think it goes live this tuesday or poss the tuesday after that.
Also, after having my first listen to Bish Bosch today it was really hard to figure out what to follow new Scott Walker with. But then I remembered Howard Shore's music for The Cell and yes it is still one of the most amazing recordings of this century and a fine avant-Stygian match for nu-Scott. Everyone who reads this thread should get a cheap used copy!

okay WTF I am experiencing a crossed-streams mind explosion. Just learned that the great Leonard Rosenman (who composed the fearsomely avant-garde scores to The Prophecy, Sibyl, Fantastic Voyage, the 2nd Planet of the Apes film, Bakshi's LOTR, etc etc) was the arranger and producer on the Linda Perhacs album. She was his dentist. Help! My brain!!!

― ~farben~ (Jon Lewis), Monday, 31 December 2012 18:25 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, looks like I got them reversed – my memory is based off of some international posters I saw the convention a couple years ago.
"In Italy, The Evil Dead was released under the title La Casa ("The House") and Evil Dead II became La Casa II. These were followed by three unrelated movies: Umberto Lenzi's La Casa 3 (aka Ghosthouse) (1988), Fabrizio Laurenti's La Casa 4 (aka Witchery) (1988) and Claudio Fragasso's La Casa 5 (1990). This is similar to what has happened in George A. Romero's Living Dead series starting with Zombi 2. House II: The Second Story (1987) and The Horror Show (1989) were retitled La Casa 6 and La Casa 7 respectively in their Italian releases."

(on "Richard Band ripped Herrmanns' Psycho")an older Mikael Carlsson fanboyish review of the "flawed but unique" Re-Animator filmscore by Richard Band....being "one of the coolest musical in-jokes ever presented in a film score", plus some funny trivia like how difficult it was to work with the Rome Philharmonic.
oddly enough, as i'm listening right now to the Pit & The Pendulum (1991) score by Band...i have to admit it sounds like some generic carmina burana rip-off.

weird, phil anselmo's apparently putting this thing together
Films confirmed to be shown throughout the three-day festival include, ‘The Evil Dead’ (plus horror/exploitation reel), ‘The Manson Family,’ ‘Maniac,’ ‘Zombie,’ ‘Cannibal Holocaust,’ ‘Scream Bloody Murder’ and many others. Former Mayhem vocalist Attila Csihar will also present fans with a truly unique experience, as the black metal veteran will perform a live soundtrack while the silent German expressionist classic ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ is screened for a wide-eyed audience.
For true cult horror fans, Anselmo has yet another masterful treat to offer at the Housecore festival, as ‘Coffin Joe’ director and actor José Mojica Marins will introduce his Brazilian classic films, engage in a Q&A with fans, sign autographs and curate a museum-style exhibit of original artwork and posters never seen outside of Brazil.
Philip H. Anselmo’s Housecore Horror Film Festival will be held at Emo’s in Austin, Texas, from Oct. 25-27. Want to learn even more about the event? Check out the fest’s official website!

Big horror sdtrk news round my way is the new kritzerland reissue of Jerry goldsmith's Poltergeist II The Other Side. This has been on cd two times before but the critical diff is that for this one they worked from the analog session tapes rather than the digital master prepared circa the film. And it makes a world of difference, to the extent that I now consider this an essential 80s goldsmith where before I didn't rate it much. The warmer, richer sound picture integrates the bizarre synth filigree with the orchestra more continuously; the synths sound more at home than on the brittle, glare-y previous editions. This is not on the level of the first film's score, duh, but I love it now. Unfort this edition of 1500 sold out in a couple of days but it's probably out there in DL land.

i have no idea -- i couldn't find anything else about him aside from this sdtk, which is REALLY GOOD -- it has a tiny bit of the western vibe like Richard Thompson's Grizzly Man sdtk + PV on Herzog (mostly the latter + a little Upstream Color so basically it sounds like a top notch Herzog movie)
also the emusic version doesn't have a 48 min track that's available on amazon, so i have no idea what's up with thatbut mostly it was a great movie and the music was increíble.

i really feel like there should be a search and destroy devoted to death waltz/mondo and other similar horror soundtrack reissuers. there are so many of them and they sound so good thanks to the hyperbolic dusty groove style blurbs that inevitably are on the packaging. like i know a goblin soundtrack is a good bet, or the steve moore soundtrack to the guest, or john carpenter and tangerine dream.
anyway it could probably live here too and i'm sure a close reading of this thread would provide the answers i am hoping for.

Just my annual reminder to everyone that Christopher Young's score to A Nightmare On Elm Street 2 remains the best horror soundtrack of the past 30 years IMO
There is a new box set of all the NOES scores but since there is nothing else remotely in Young's league in there, one is probably still best served by the long standing release that combines 1 and 2 on a CD.

Creature Features & Intrada pay tribute to Walt Disney's 1983 adaptation of Ray Bradbury's SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES!
We're proud to host an unprecedented symposium celebrating Intrada's brand new CD release of composer Georges Delerue's chilling rejected score. This legendary original music was unheard outside of one fateful test screening, replaced with a new score by the late James Horner.
Join film music journalist Tim Greiving of NPR and The Los Angeles Times as we revisit the film's complicated production with rare footage and behind-the-scenes photos -- plus a panel discussion with Colette Delerue, editor Axel Hubert, film music agent Richard Kraft, soundtrack producer Douglass Fake, and other guests to be added.
Admission is FREE with purchase of the new CD. Seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

Never seen the film and never knew about there being different soundtracks
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 4 December 2015 16:01 (nine years ago)
I wish to GAWD I could go to that event. The unused Delerue score is one of the finest film scores I've ever heard (even in, until now, bootleg quality) and to hear it mastered from first generation elements is going to be amazing. Intrada's CD comes out on Tuesday the 8th.
Delerue's score stands apart from his body of work, much darker and stranger than anything else by him.
The film is sorta misbegotten, sure, but still well worth seeing, with doses of real magic. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it RAG.
Anyway, if ppl want a sublime and hella atmospheric horror scoring masterpiece order this from Intrada on Tuesday.
I hope they record the symposium thingy for youtube...

Saw F2F (Frizzi to Fulci? Fulci to Frizzi? I can't remember) -- basically Fabio Frizzi + a 6-person band -- playing the score to The Beyond with the movie at a huge old theater packed to the gills with horror soundtrack fanatics. There was a lot of clapping, yelling, horns-throwing and they played three encores iirc, including selections from City of the Living Dead and Zombi. It was awesome! So glad I went. My only complaint was that the drums were a little bit too quiet for my liking but that could be because I am deaf or I'm just accustomed to much louder music.
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 7 October 2016 14:23 (eight years ago)
The crowd was very patient and polite while Frizzi played a new (I think he said it was new?) somewhat limp cpuntry rock song too. That's one of the best things about horror soundtracks, like Carrie -- there are cheesy song-type songs mixed in with the horror-y tracks. Gives the best tracks that extra punch!

i am also a fan of the totally conventional FM country tune interrupting a hair-raising horror OST, said tune generally coming from the jukebox in the roadside greasy spoon as the local sheriff hears something faintly disturbing from a local and just before we cut to a POV from the bushes

Glad to see that Libra's Shock really does have an audience. I've seen it on a few lists now and it's well deserved.
The biggest gaps to me is the lack of Hammer/Amicus/Tigon and no silent films. It's understandable people haven't got a hold of many Japanese soundtracks but when I was binging Samurai horror there was a lot of interesting stuff.

Hints teased on the Intrada Records forum are making it look as if Jerry Goldsmith’s score for The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (1975) is gonna get released for the first time ever next week. If so, a massive massive occasion - even on the shitty bootlegs that have been around it’s clearly a total high water mark - gorgeous swooning romantic writing melted together with aggressive modular synth utterances.
