Animal Collective's Brian Weitz (aka Geologist) spoke with Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1 last night to discuss the band's newly announced album Centipede Hz. Lovers of early Animal Collective, rejoice: Weitz said the band has moved away from Merriweather Post Pavilion's sound and "back to our roots."
The band members all moved back to the Baltimore area to record together. Weitz said, "We got a little practice space in this barn on Josh [Dibb, aka Deakin]'s mom's property and it was basically like being a garage band again."
That means you'll find less sampling on Centipede Hz than on Merriweather, and more organic instrumentation. "This one we wrote more as a rock band in a room and we wanted to record it that way as well." Weitz also mentioned that they've played most of the music on the record live on tour over the past year.

Is it a rule that you can't have heard the live versions before doing this? Cos I haven't and now that I think about it yeah maybe some people have.

Perhaps so! Doesn't matter, live versions don't always sound like the studio ones anyway.

It's a shame if AC have taken a step backwards for this record, hoping that ILX are going to take up the slack a bit.

in the interest of trolling youtubers, i fully endorse ppl hearing the live versions first and then attempting the most ~creative~ interpretation of them, though i realize that may go against the ILX Pre-Cover philosophy

We'll rent a state-of-the-art studio in NYC, take over two floors of a nearby hotel, pay a guru to make sure that the 'chi' is balanced, and then get loaded on 100 year old brandy and coke.

The joke is, I don't even particularly like Animal Collective and I would actually think I'd completely failed if my track ends up sounding anything like theirs. :-P

I feel awful, but I might need to back out of doing "Father Time" on the second volume. I've felt really terrible about everything I've made recently (visually, musically, work-wise, everything - it's a phase I go through every few years) and I've been unable to complete anything, or even really to get far at all. I only started two days ago, as I was up to my eyeballs in work, and I got a new laptop (reinstalling audio software/transferring licenses is a nightmare), but I'm free all week, so I should be fine for time. I'm learning a few things too - I've recorded a few things before, but they were lolindie guitar/bass/drum stuff.

I'm actually using Animoog on my phone (which I got when it was still €0.79) for most of the synth sounds - it's a great little program. The main framework of the tune is based around one super-obvious sample - I didn't think subtlety was the way to go.

I wrote lyrics! I managed to use the words "adoption" and "marionette"

i wrote lyrics too! I use the words "ziggurats" and "corpses"

Just sent my one there. Animal Collective sampled the Grateful Dead on their last EP, so clearly the next step for Fake Animal Collective was to sample noted Dead influence and jam band faves Herman's Hermits. Twas nearly an instrumental - voice is shot with a throat infection, but had enough lemon, honey, and Merocaine to squawk something out. The cover above looks amazing. Looking forward to this.
