As of July 1, the 2010s will be 25% gone. So, what is the best album from the first quarter of the decade that brought us Rebecca Black?

I don't really know, though. I always think that whatever new thing I've been listening to the last 2 weeks is probably the greatest album of all time

frogbs, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

I'd probably go for Konkylie by When Saints Go Machine. Hot Chip, St Vincent and The Chap (Well Done Europe) would be contenders too.

Steve Reich, Double Sextet/2x5

Lots of "really good" or even "solid" albums in the 2010's but nothing that screams "album of the decade" so far.

billstevejim, Saturday, 19 May 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

I guess I'll have to play it safe and also go with Flockaveli.

billstevejim, Saturday, 19 May 2012 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

School of Seven Bells - Disconnect From Desire

This would've been a likely answer for me not too long ago, but I'm really down to liking just a few tracks from it now. "ILU" definitely one of top songs of the decade, though.

What springs to mind (although I'd like to go and check my collection properly as opposed to waiting for a train a I am doing now):
Oversteps
Archandroid
Konkylie
Diamond Mine
Son of Chico Dusty
Let England Shake

2011 seemed like a remarkably strong year for new music whereas this year feels like it's still waiting to kick in for me.

I'm inclined to go with Chromatics - Kill for Love.
My one reservation being that it borrows so heavily from the past. Then again, that seems to be a dominant quality of our current music.

Definitely a contender for me too. It's not a record I can listen to casually, on an everyday basis. I either have to set aside two hours at home or listen to it while walking through the wilderness, preferably near sea cliffs.

That Portable album completely passed my attention - I only recgonised the name in passing from various remixes, total dilletante - but it stood out as an unusual choice on this thread and a listen tells me it's actually pretty brilliant. Not sure if I'd rate it as an album of the 10s yet but I'm expecting it to open out further and further on repeated listens.

okay listening to the synthetic mewling sounds that close "Architect of Love" I am def thinking that Anika takes the silver and this is the best album of the decade so far:

Right now, it's this:

Lovely soothing synth drones, Meg Bowles is a genius who remains to be uncovered by a larger audience because she's in the (admittedly self-chosen) "new age" category. But seriously, if this (or some of her previous albums) had been released by a "cool" ambient label, they would be lauded as masterpieces.

totally forgot about this ... i really like the production on it, though i'm a sucker for literal industrial noises. Total subtle homage to Robert Rental and Frieder Butzman if you listen properly

sarahell, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 22:57 (nine years ago)

the esplendor geometrico and plan b hommages of 'ilm años' help to intersect notions of class and gender within interstitial social spaces more acutely than anything since 'the flowers of indie' by filth riemann

I don't know if it's my favorite, but the Mountain Goats Transcendental Youth is on the short list. That is a ridiculously underrated record.

yeah that one's certainly become my favorite mountain goats record over time

Frederik B, Wednesday, 3 February 2016 07:08 (nine years ago)

Only been listening to this record for two weeks or so, but so far it does more for me than any other favorites from this decade.

Wolf Alice - My Love Is Cool

It would be a great disgrace to the glorious bounty of this, possibly the best half-decade of music, to not detail at length the many notable and worthy runners-up, including of course...imago? What a surprise to see you here! What are you doing with that Dyson, imago? No. No! Please god no! Arrrg. Moan. Gurgle. I regret that I could only...pick...one. *dies*

how's life, Wednesday, 3 February 2016 12:33 (nine years ago)

My list would be a bit like:

Matana Roberts, Coin Coin Chapter One
Corrupted, Garten der Unbewusstheit
The Lowland Hundred, Under Cambrian Sky
Hallock Hill, A Hem of Evening
Blues Control & Laraaji, Frkwys, Vol.8
Wooden Wand, Blood Oaths of the New Blues
Mark Kozelek & Jimmy LaValle - Perils of the Sea

i think

Steve Moore – Pangaea Ultima

or

Daft Punk – Random Access Memories

I could do a pretty solid OPO (only pick one hundred), this decade's been awesome so far

frogbs, Wednesday, 3 February 2016 14:14 (nine years ago)

I have only heard chapter 3 by Matana and I loved it. I guess I need to listen to the first one.

The Caretaker - An Empty Bliss Beyond This World (2011)
Carly Rae Jepsen - E•MO•TION (2015)
DJ Koze - Amygdala (2013)

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 30 October 2017 23:52 (seven years ago)

Right now I'd say the top three are 1. Grimes 2. Shabazz and 3. EMA

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 30 October 2017 23:57 (seven years ago)

Had no idea you loved the Caretaker, Moka! Head thee to the (slow) thread :-)

2014
FKA Twigs - LP1 (Young Turks, 2014)
Spoon - They Want My Soul (ANTI-, 2014)
D'Angelo - Black Messiah (RCA, 2014)
2015
Grimes - Artangels (4AD, 2015)
Kamasi Washington - The Epic (Brainfeeder, 2015)
Carly Rae Jepsen - Emotion (Interscope, 2015)

― ✖✖✖ (Moka)

Not much has changed except from 2013 and 2014 where I'd currently put Dj Koze and Todd Terje at the top when I didn't consider them in the top 3 of the year back then. 2016 I think top of my mind my top 3 would be Noname, Thee Oh Sees and Nicolas Jaar... 2017 too early to tell but the three I've been listening the most through the year so far are Kelly Lee Owens, Sudan Archives and Big Thief.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 00:04 (seven years ago)

Yeah it has grown on me so much! I wasn't particularly interested when it first came out but I play it every now and then while doing some house cleaning and it always makes me feel both calm and sad.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 00:12 (seven years ago)

Btw if you like that Caretaker album also check out Annabel Lee which I also mention above! Not ambient per se but it also has the same ghostly quality and is based on jazz piano and string loops.

Where is this slow threaD you mention?

"Think of Nina Simone‘s darker moments with Lou Rhodes‘ folkier ones but backed by an orchestra ripped from a 60s Bernard Herrmann score."

"Annabel (lee) has a voice so smooth and hypnotic it grabs hold and doesn't let go .. The album highlights the charm of Annabel's vocals and Richard's impressive musical designs, which are steeped in jazz while mirroring 1800s classical compositions the album, which combine to deliver a hauntingly gorgeous landscape of sound."
9/10
-- http://exclaim.ca/music/ar...solitary_places

"The 10-track album is gorgeously sophisticated with swirling instrumentation and haunting vocals. It blends soul, folk and jazz, invoking the haunting classicism of Claude Debussy and Erik Satie, intermingled with the quiet folklore of Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, and tipped with the jazz stylings of Miles Davis and Billie Holiday, it’s bloody amazing. Her eerily dark vocals add a certain rawness to the mysterious soundscapes."

POO: Destroyer - Kaputt

Deliberately excluding 'classical' or this would be a very different POX:

Elina Duni Quartet - Dallëndyshe (2015)

FKA twigs - EP2 (2013)

Giorgio Tuma - this life denied me your love
Giorgio tuma - in the morning we’ll meet

Had never heard of this before, but it's good! Chamber pop. The Laetitia Sadier track is lush, too.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 09:23 (seven years ago)

This is difficult. I feel very far away from my favorite albums from 2010 in particular. I would still endorse them, but the fact that I don't actually want to hear them makes me doubt my picks.

Matthew Shipp – I've Been to Many Places

would easily make the cut though.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 2 November 2017 20:31 (seven years ago)

For 2010, I think I'd rather listen to Daddy Yankee's Mundial (which only me, unperson and Frank Kogan liked or even noticed) than Janelle Monae or Marina & the Diamonds at this point, but is it really better? I don't think so.

Dinsdale, Thursday, 2 November 2017 22:15 (seven years ago)

Love the Bill Callahan love, but I'd say 'Dream River' is a notch better and I definitely play it more than 'Apocalypse' IMHO

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 2 November 2017 23:26 (seven years ago)

Probably no big surprise here, but King Krule's 2013 album 6 Feet Beneath the Moon is easily my pick for the decade thus far.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Friday, 3 November 2017 00:04 (seven years ago)

Just absolutely crazy how fragmented music is now. Almost no list has any album in common with any other list.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 3 November 2017 00:13 (seven years ago)

We're getting 10? Then

Andy Stott - Luxury Problems
Elza - A mulher do fim do mundo
Nik Bärtsch's Ronin - Llyrìa
Susanne Sundfør - Ten Love Songs
Emma Ruth Rundle - Some Heavy Ocean (probably got the most listens, overall)
ГШ (Glintshake) - ОЭЩ МАГЗИУ
Cristobal Tapia de Veer - Utopia
Grimes - Visions
Jessie Ware - Devotion
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith - Ears

Sanpaku, Friday, 3 November 2017 00:31 (seven years ago)

This Dirty Money shit, it ain't for everybody, man. It's a motherfuckin' vibe, it's for motherfuckers that's patient, motherfuckers that like to take their time, and close their eyes, and dream.

xp Scik Mouthy:

Loved Dysnomia too, from the first time I heard it on a Radiolab podcast, and it lead me to search out other minimal jazz. If you like Dawn of Midi, do check out the Zurich scene on the Tonus-Music label (and associated Orbital Garden club): Nik Bärtsch (both Ronin and Mobile), Don Li, Ania Losinger, Mike Keusen, Sha's Banryu, Zimoun. Mid-period Necks (from Aquatic to Mosquito/See Through) is probably a given.

laetitia listed 'in the morning we'll meet' as one of her five life changing albums, probably because 'this life has denied me your love' hadn't come out yet. he's wonderful.

something like this? Kaputt is #1 all time

ufo, Saturday, 4 November 2017 15:09 (seven years ago)

one year passes...

something like

#1• Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel... - 2012
Susanne Sundfør - Ten Love Songs - 2015
Julia Holter - Ekstasis - 2012
Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid - 2010
My Bloody Valentine - m b v - 2013
Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges - 2011
Ghost - Opus Eponymous - 2011
Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit - 2015
Mock & Toof - Tuning Echoes - 2010

in my opinion 2017 was a shit year for music and then i gave up looking for new music after that. interesting seeing decades-end lists with the most recent 25% being stuff i've barely heard of.
