i really liked this song in 1989...i think somehow i thought the singer was singing it from a previous p.o.v. when he, too, had been sixteen years old?

working in a record store during 1980, i recall benny mardones was one of those "hit" albums that NOBODY ever bought. and we were the square store in town, the go-to for gino vanelli and late-period chicago albums.

tbh I never noticed there were two versions of this song, although I'd heard them both. The 1980 version has much cleaner production and is better.

I LOVE singing this song at karaoke. One of my finest moments was on the day that R. Kelly was acquitted, and he got this gem dedicated to him by yours truly. I really wailed during the part at the end too.

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 18 May 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)

One of my favorite parts is the falsetto "it's trooo-hooo" and also the nonsense wailing at the end obvs.

I don't really understand why the ability to fly is a necessary prerequisite for him doing any of those things.

Bob Bop Perano (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 18 May 2012 16:23 (thirteen years ago)

tbh the him being into a sixteen-year-old thing doesn't disturb me as much as his insistence that "i'll show you a love that you've never seen..."

similar serial killer intensity operative in "endless love", esp. if you are familiar with the film, which is actually super-disturbing

dell (del), Friday, 18 May 2012 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 18 May 2012 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

He has to pick her up from high school before he takes her into the night and shows her love. Due to school regulations prohibiting mulleted old men from loitering around campus, this requires airlift.

Due to the success of "Into the Night," Curb Records signed Mardones and he recorded "Into the Night '89." The track appeared on his self-titled release (known as the "Blue Album" by his fans.) Not long after that, Mardones appeared on a Showtime tribute to Roy Orbison, alongside such luminaries as Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, Johnny Cash and k.d. lang. Elvis Presley's band was the house band for the evening. When Mardones came on stage to sing "Running Scared," few people knew his name, but when he finished the song, he received a standing ovation.

"This record was initially recorded as the soundtrack to the documentary, Into the Night: The Benny Mardones Story, writes Benny Mardones, in his liner notes for A Journey Through Time

To those listeners outside of Syracuse New York, where Benny Mardones lives, he makes clear that he is, in his own words, "a superstar," playing to audiences of thousands on a regular basis. The fact that Benny Mardones has a documentary about his rise, fall, and comeback is a shocker. ( - Erlewine, AMG)

You know I realize we keep quoting from the Wikipedia page but the slow burn tautology here:

The story behind "Into the Night" charting twice is this: In 1989, KZZP, a radio station in Arizona, ran a segment titled "Where Are They Now?" The most popular question was "Whatever happened to the guy who sang 'Into the Night'?" Scott Shannon, then program director for Pirate Radio in Los Angeles, added "Into the Night" to its playlist. Radio stations across the country followed suit and "Into the Night" was once again a hit.

Mardones was 33 years old when the song became a hit for the first time and he still lives quite well on the royalties received from this song that was also a hit in 1989.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 May 2012 22:37 (thirteen years ago)

BTW, the opening fifteen seconds of this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM6Gox5Ynu8

I mean, the rest of it as well, of course. Especially when you hear the first use of the title.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 May 2012 22:41 (thirteen years ago)

modern english had the same thing happen down to the rerecording for new label like a year later w/ 'i melt w/ you', though there it didn't chart either time nearly as high as benny did both times w/ 'if i could fly'. i'm trying to think of other similar instances this has happened w/ us charts/radio, i'm sure in the uk where old songs rechart all the time it's not so rare.

balls, Friday, 18 May 2012 22:43 (thirteen years ago)

The cowriter of "Into the Night" has his own rep:

Robert Tepper is an American singer, best known for his hit song "No Easy Way Out" from the Rocky IV motion picture soundtrack.

Born in Bayonne, New Jersey, Tepper moved to New York where he became a staff writer. He paired up with fellow singer Benny Mardones, and together they wrote Mardones' hit ballad "Into the Night," which earned them a Grammy Awards nomination.

In 1985, Tepper signed with Scotti Brothers and moved to Los Angeles. Actor/director Sylvester Stallone was taken with Tepper's song "No Easy Way Out," which subsequently led to its inclusion in the movie Rocky IV. "No Easy Way Out" climbed into the Top 40, reaching #22 on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1986, and momentarily putting Tepper in the public eye. Several European labels, including Ministry of Sound, released "No Easy Way Out" with their own dance versions, and the hard rock group Bullet For My Valentine also recorded the song in 2008. In 1986, one year after "Rocky IV" another song from the album "no easy way out" called "angel of the city" became the main song of Stallone´s film "Cobra". With "Angel of the city" Tepper was not as successful as with "no easy way out"; the movie "Cobra" was not a hit. Tepper released two solo albums for Scotti Bros. Records but both albums received little promotion from the label. Also in 1986 he co-wrote the single "Le Bel Age" for Pat Benatar with peaked at #54 on the Billboard charts. He went on to join the classic hard rock group "Iron Butterfly" for a few years. His third solo album No Rest For The Wounded Heart was released exclusively in Europe in 1996 on the MTM Music label.

In 2009, Sony/BMG released his first two albums digitally.

In recent years he ventured into writing music for television and film, and collaborated on a musical. There are plans for his fourth solo album to be released in 2011.[dated info] The music will be a departure from the big rock sound of the 1980s and has been described as "acoustic, singer/songwriter with an electric tinge."

In 2012 he released his fourth solo album New Life Story.

I was too young to open my legs the first time but this got, like, blanket airplay in the late spring and early summer of '89 on Miami's Y-100. The Gruesome Twosome used to be this and NKOTB's "I'll Be Loving You Forever," with which it and "Into The Night" share a, shall we say, constituency.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 18 May 2012 22:43 (thirteen years ago)

Was wondering that. I've heard Rodgers be credited/blamed for it before so I think you're right. Before that...who was Free's lead vocalist?

And the next song on Benny's album was "American Bandstand" -- so no points in guessing where he ended up playing it once:

modern english had the same thing happen down to the rerecording for new label like a year later w/ 'i melt w/ you', though there it didn't chart either time nearly as high as benny did both times w/ 'if i could fly'. i'm trying to think of other similar instances this has happened w/ us charts/radio

UB40 - "Red, Red Wine" (also because some DJ inexplicably started playing it years after it was first a hit)
Hall & Oates - "She's Gone"
Aerosmith - "Dream On"
Steve Winwood - "Valerie" (remixed but with no additional parts recorded)
4 Seasons - "December 1963 (Oh, What A Night)" (remix) - charted in 1976 and 1994
Lee Greenwood - "God Bless the USA" - top 20 country hit in 1984 and 2001, the latter after the terrorist attacks

There are several others that re-charted due to their prominent inclusion in popular movies (i.e. "Bohemian Rhapsody" from Wayne's World or "Unchained Melody" in Ghost), or immediately after the artist died.

Benny seems to hold the record for longest time between charting twice with the exact same record though, if you discount event-related revivals.

Like some others here I always thought this was Steve Perry or some such - the "if i could fly, i'd pick you up" chorus is pure Journey, but the slightly jazzy piano and celeste licks were a tipoff that it had to be someone else, like maybe Lou Gramm guest-vocaled on a Brenda Russell track or something. Really didn't know, just one of those songs I heard on the radio that so blended into the background I never gave much thought to who it might be. I hope the next time i hear it on the piped-in music feed, I don't think "Yeaahhh!! Benny!"....

Music video

Mardones made a music video for the song, but, as it pre-dated MTV by a year, it was not widely broadcast.

The video opens with Mardones walking down a street and approaching a house. The song plays over the video, and the lyrics serve as Mardones' monologue. He is met at the door by a bearded man who tells him, "She's just 16 years old. Leave her alone." Mardones leaves and walks around to the back of the house, peering through a window at a girl sitting sullenly in her room. The video then cuts to Mardones at a pay phone, speaking to the girl on the other end of the line and professing his love. The video then cuts again to Mardones returning to the girl's house, carrying a rolled-up carpet. He crawls through her bedroom window, unravels the magic carpet, and taking the girl's hand, they take flight into the night sky. The video closes with Mardones serenading the girl as they embrace, the scene finally fading to black as they kiss.

There's an alternate universe where Benny first rerecorded this song in 1984, with a gospel choir thrown on it, and it is that universe's "I Want To Know What Love Is."

We were wrong. There is something creepier than than the song "Into the Night." That thing: the original video for Benny Mardones' "Into the Night," featuring a goblin-faced Benny Mardones in a sleeveless striped t-shirt stalking a sixteen year old girl through a window, and then through a spectral statutory rape Tardis, and finally on a magic carpet that smells like Night Train and old cigarette smoke.

Just remembered this classic thread after Mr. Mardones came up on shuffle. Those screams in the fade are truly crazed, the sound of a desperate man being dragged away from a high school fence after going to all that trouble of cutting off his ankle monitor.

No, no, it was a different sixteen year old girl the second time, hence the re-release

At least this time around the sixteen year old girl in question is just an anime print on a body pillow. I guess that's progress?

Listening rn after an inexcusably long lapse. Happy to announce that it's lost none of its power to induce bone-deep creep-outs.

I could've sworn there was a lyric about Benny conveying this message by scrawling it in his own blood across the side of this poor girl's family house and being sent to jail when her father found him passed out in the yard the next morning, but perhaps it's just subtextual.

Was just thinking about this guy.

Dad turns 71 this summer and sent me a photo of Johnny Cash from 2001. "This is what 71 looks like!"

Made me think of Rick Rubin calling up Benny Mardones, asking if he wanted the CASH treatment.

RUBIN: Got some ideas perfect for the first single: "Soma" by Smashing Pumpkins, um, song called "Harrowdown Hill" by Thom Yorke – he's the guy from Radiohead....

MARDONES: What about.... "Into the Night"?

Though the opening lines ("She's just 16 years old/ 'Leave her alone,' they said") made many listeners uncomfortable coming from the then-33-year-old Mardones, he would later explain the song was inspired by his platonic relationship with a teenage neighbor of his whose father had left her. (The first line was supposedly meant as a rejoinder to his co-writer, who got a little leery when meeting her for the first time.)

Saw this album in a thrift store yesterday. Had never heard anything by this guy other than his big gross hit, but the album opener's title, "She's So French", piqued my curiosity. The first ten seconds seem to sum up the lyrical themes and vocal stylings of Mr. Mardones. "You'd better/Give me/Some of your/Good loving/Right nooooooooooooowwww!!!!! [wailed with maximum gusto]". And besides the repeated assertion that She's So French, no other references to Frenchness appear.

ironically, it was actually Mardones who said this to Robert Tepper IRL when the latter made an inappropriate remark about a 16-year old girl who he paid to walk his dog. he and all his apologists keep pointing to this to suggest it isn't a song about wanting to have sex w/ teenage girls, that it's a platonic love for someone he wants to take out of poverty...

...which would be maybe 35% believable if not for the chorus and the fuckin' music video, lol

the creepiness of the song notwithstanding, I found a video of his last ever performance and his Parkinson's had gotten so bad by that point he was visibly shaking and barely able to hold the microphone. and he introduces "Into the Night" and asks the crowd to join him for what will be his last performance of the song ever. it was incredibly sad to watch.
