The Bee Gees made their own version of Sgt. Pepper. Then there was that weird collection of Beatles covers called All This And WWII. Booker T. & The M.G.s covered Abbey Road and who can forget Tiffany's version of "I Saw Him Standing There".
Now, it's ILX's turn.
Beginning on June 1, the 35th anniversary of the release of Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, we'll start accepting claims for an ILX compilation of Beatles covers tentatively titled ILX Covers The Beatles. The deadline for song claiming will be Dec. 1. Tracks will be accepted until Jan. 1, 2013. The release of this compilation is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, which would have been George Harrison’s 70th birthday.
_______________________________________________________________________
Here are the rough guidelines:
• Like other ILX comps, send your song as an MP3, WAV or FLAC. If you would rather work out some sort of dropbox deal, let me know in an email. The email address for all correspondence is ilx.beatles.compATgmailºcom.
• Unlike other comps where we claim our songs in this overview thread, let’s keep the songs we’re covering private. That way, when we release the comp, it can be a big surprise. I’ve got grandiose plans of releasing two versions - one in which the tracks are separated and named, and one “LOVE” version, where all tracks are mixed together into one big beautiful monstrosity.
Send me the name of the song you want to do as well as a second and third choice. First come, first served. I'll get back with you on what's been taken/not taken.
And if you let loose with which song you’re going to do, no worries. You’re just not going to get any revelations from me.
• As I said, we’ll start taking dibs on songs beginning on June 1. Let’s do it at 1400 GMT that day. That’s 7 a.m. San Francisco time, 10 a.m. at the Ed Sullivan Theater, 3 p.m. in Liverpool and midnight, June 2, in Sydney. Any claims on songs before then will not be accepted.
• Only songs performed by the Beatles and released originally by the Beatles will be accepted. No Badfinger, no Wings, no Wilburys, no “Besame Mucho”. If the song you want to cover is “Twist & Shout”, that’s fine since it was released on Please Please Me. I would encourage submissions to be written by Lennon, McCartney, Harrison or Starkey, but if the group thought it was a good idea to release their version of “Boys”, then who can I be to say we shouldn’t either.
Even though Anthology was an official release, I’d prefer we stay away from songs such as “All Things Must Pass” or “Teddy Boy” which were released later as a solo effort.
Looking forward to hearing comments. Yeah yeah yeah!

June 1 is soon enough to get started, but you have until Dec. 1 to pick a song (if you can get it done in a busy month.)
Hahaha, okay, I want in. I will have to think of which shitty song I can DESTROY.
― emil.y, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)
Only reason to be picky about when to start accepting dibs is to be fair to both sides of the Atlantic. I don't want a bunch of Britishes upset at some dumb Arkansas guy for accepting the first claims at 000 GMT.
But that said, the Beatles did land in Arkansas once for refueling. They installed a statue in Walnut Ridge to commemorate the event.

Today was the first time I ever actually bothered to look up that Beatles statue. It kinda bothers me because the band landed up there in 1965 or '66, long before they grew their hair out and started walking across streets.

Is it really a good idea to be running two ILX comps at once? Can you not wait a bit?
Seems like when ILX does 2 at once, neither happens.

― Mark G, Thursday, 24 May 2012 05:58 (thirteen years ago)
So firstly, I shall put my claim in June 1st in private, I shall see about getting a mod to edit my first post here.
And also it'll be well away from being run at the same time as the current one, any road up.
― Mark G, Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:01 (thirteen years ago)
I'm up for it too. Have ideas of songs and doubt anyone would fight me for it / them.
― Rob M Revisited, Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:10 (thirteen years ago)
Argh see now I'm going to get the anxiety that everyone else is choosing the song I would want to do.
There's such a narrow range of songs that would even fit me and I imagine it's the off the beaten track songs that will go first.
― Dixie Narco Martenot (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:37 (thirteen years ago)
I can imagine the queue for "get one of those for your trousers" will be longer than the queue for "Hey Jude"
― Mark G, Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:41 (thirteen years ago)
I should have put quotes around "off the beaten track."
It's just that there are really only 1 or 2 songs I'd want to do, and I'd be gutted if I lost out to someone who was all just "I h8 the Beatles & their cultural domination so I'm just going to pick this one to wreck it."
Because yeah yeah I hate the cultural domination and critical supremacy of the Beatles but some of their songs are so beautiful, especially when they catch me unaware.
Oh, I am conflicted. I should sit this thread out.
― Dixie Narco Martenot (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:48 (thirteen years ago)
Wow, what a cool idea. Yeah, I want to do this. Gonna start thinking about my top three picks! Bravo pplains.
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 24 May 2012 07:26 (thirteen years ago)
WCC, hopefully the June 1 starting gun at a particular time helps in getting you the song you want. I really don't imagine getting 90 submissions all at once there.
But to be fair to anyone else who would have wanted to do those two songs as well, I think this is fair. At least it's daylight in most of ILX-land.
And I know we've got the Animal Collective comp running now too. Anyone is welcome to forget about this project until that's over. Remember, you've got six months to even claim a song and almost eight months to record it.
― pplains, Thursday, 24 May 2012 13:56 (thirteen years ago)
Just adding this again since I really should have made it bold in the OP:
In a week, this will be a moot point anyway.

Hey yeah, I didn't realise how long the submission period was when I was worried about not being able to finish the other compilation. That's plenty long enough to finish the other one before starting this.
ARGH WHY YOU GOTS TO THROW TIME ZONES INTO IT THO I can never get my head around time zones. We're in British Summer Time now, right? Argh. Pressure.
I think I've found two alternate songs but I just have no way of judging how popular things are among the ILX compilation crowd. Not that I would plan on doing either of these songs, but we seem like the kind of people where several people would fight over Rain but no one would be interested in doing Strawberry Fields.

― H.P. Hovercraft and the Vini Reilly Invasion (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 24 May 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)
so hows this gonna work? you keep receiving submissions until the entire catalog is full or until 1/1/13, which ever comes first?
― billstevejim, Thursday, 24 May 2012 20:02 (thirteen years ago)
Or is it like, one submission per ILX username?
― billstevejim, Thursday, 24 May 2012 20:08 (thirteen years ago)
I'm prolly not gonna do this, but I was just wondering.
Yeah, for now, we're just going to take one submissions per ILX user. No socks.
Beginning June 1, I'll take submissions at ilx.beatles.compatgmaildotcom. (Trying to avoid setting off the email filter here.)
From then until Dec. 1, you can stake your claim on what title you're recording. You have until 1/1/13 to submit the finished track.
I don't know off the top of my head how many Beatles songs we're talking about here. At least 120. If we get anything close to that before 12/1, I'll certainly alert everyone on this thread. I will also likely shit my pants.
So if we clear your submission a week from tomorrow, you record it and get it ready over the weekend, and then send it to me on Monday, June 4, you're good.
If we clear your submission on 11/30 and you have it back to me by 12/31, then again, we're good.
You don't have to claim your song on June 1 and you don't have to wait until 1/1 to send it in. The only incentive to get in your stakes early is to take advantage of the "first-come, first-serve" procedure here.
I'm going to add a track to this, but I'm going to wait until the last minute, so I don't claim a song over anyone else.
― pplains, Thursday, 24 May 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)
I would love to hear multiple versions of the same song, myself.
― Trey Imaginary Songz (WmC), Thursday, 24 May 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)
no medleys or intra-beatles mashups allowed then? like elanor rigby lyrics over daytripper riff?
― Philip Nunez, Thursday, 24 May 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)
If multiples exist, they must be performed in different keys. You know, to keep it interesting for the listener. Get those capos warmed up.
― andrew m., Thursday, 24 May 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)
I agree that multiple versions would sound cool, but I'm more interested in covering a lot of ground, seeing what songs get taken first, and how it's going to sound when it's put all together. You really want to hear six versions of "Helter Skelter" in that Love mix?
But that said, if someone wants to go all Beatallica and throw in a few riffs from other songs into their mix, that's cool. Lord knows the Beatles themselves pulled that trick a couple of times. Just as long as it's under the umbrella of one song title.
So yeah. No one gets to claim Stars on 45.
― pplains, Thursday, 24 May 2012 21:07 (thirteen years ago)

I have a Beatles cover I made 20 years ago, one of the few surviving tapes I have from that long ago, that I just listened to for the first time in eons. I recalled it being a rather dull, straightforward cover. I forgot it featured a cheap vintage keyboard simulating a guitar and a Roland 808 in lieu of Ringo. Would you all rather have this or a newly made recording?

Just be aware that I don't check that address so often anymore and submissions made to the beatles.comp address will be taken first.
After Friday, it won't be a big deal. I foresee a quick deluge of claims followed by a summer of relaxin'.

I will say this: I've gotten a few submissions from people who have later admitted they jumped the gun, and I haven't seen one repeat.
And the ones I am seeing, let's just say that this likely won't follow No. 1 to the letter.
― pplains, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 15:27 (thirteen years ago)
So do we not have to wait til Friday to request a song?
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 17:07 (thirteen years ago)
You do.
The ones who have contacted me prematurely to select a song won't be assigned one officially until I go through the first ones who come in on Friday at the ilx.beatles.comp email address. Those first ones on Friday will be given first choice.
On Monday, 6/4, at no official time, I'll write back to any of the early claimants and if no one has claimed their song over the weekend, I'll confirm their choice. Or they can resend me their request on Friday to get in line to be a little more sure.

I think everyone gets the gist. It sounds more complicated than it is and will be moot in less than a week.

I've already bitten off more than I can chew.
― Matt M., Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:09 (thirteen years ago)
I've been a little intimidated myself, even though I haven't even officially picked a song. Crüt's link up there, about which chords with which songs and the arrangements and the oh my makes me feel like I'm going to try to re-write Shakespere.
Just gotta remember that no one's going to top the most successful band in history with a four-track in their bedroom. I sure as hell hope that no one notices that I can't play a minor chord on my bass. None of that was our intention going into this anyway, I don't think.
― pplains, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

Tickled pink about the tracks I've heard so far.
Remember, you've got another four months to claim a song (12/1) and five months (1/1) to get the song sent to me. The comp will be released to the world in Feb. 2013.
I still haven't picked mine out yet. I'll think of one, spend a month working it out in my head, get bored, move on to another one.
― pplains, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 14:29 (thirteen years ago)
I'm a little late, but I just noticed a new submission from earlier this month.
Not a song claim, but the entire song itself!
Fortunately, no one had staked it yet and anyway, it's been the highlight of my morning.
I would still advise you to claim a song first to make sure we don't have any repeats. Still lots of time.

Tomorrow is the 72nd birthday for John Lennon. Next up on the birthday calendar will be George's 70th in February.
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/2695/beatleswhen64775101.jpg
And that's also the day that the ILX Beatles Comp will be released to the world.
So far, we've got 29 songs claimed. We've even got four tracks finished and already sent in.
Here are the deadlines coming up: Dec. 1 will be the last day to claim a song. We're doing this privately, so email your claim to ilx.beatles.comp @ gmail.com. I'll only be able to honor the claims that come in through that email address.
Give me three requests. You'll get your top request as long as no one else has claimed it first. I'll confirm your request, usually within a day or so, if not the hour.
After Dec. 1, no more claims will be accepted. The next deadline will be Jan 1 to get your recorded track sent in.
And then on Feb. 25, we'll have our big release party online.
So again, tell me what song you want to do at ilx.beatles.comp @ gmail.com. The more the merrier, a splendid time guaranteed for all.

I'll also add that the white album is the most-represented so far. Of course, it has 30 songs on it, so there's plenty to pick from.
There's almost a small dark part of me that wishes we could've just done that album instead of everything, but it's better to have more to pick from and besides, I didn't want to seem like I was ripping off Phish.

I haven't even started work on mine yet - it's been so long since i've made any recordings and am so unfamiliar with modern multitrack recording software.
What cheap or free multitrack recording app should I use? I have a 4-year-old Windows 7 laptop and a iPod touch 4, plus some guitars and keyboards.
― Lee626, Thursday, 25 October 2012 11:42 (thirteen years ago)
Check out Reaper, it works as freeware and bugs you only once - on starting - to register, and it's dead cheap if you do register. It's not got pretty knobs or anything, but is a great piece of software for recording, you can make it as simple or complex as you like.

Sadly I'm not going to be able to do my contribution, due to a major computer death situation and no way to sorting out a replacement for some time. Not happy.
― Rob M Revisited, Monday, 17 December 2012 20:09 (twelve years ago)
Or I could use my Philips PMC-100. Google it, it's a cheesy 80s classic. In fact, I might.. What connector would I need to feed sound into an iPad into Garageband?
― Rob M Revisited, Monday, 17 December 2012 20:16 (twelve years ago)
I can't help you on the iPad side as I don't have one, but...
my Philips PMC-100
...no joke I am so jealous, this is rad as fuck!
― Black Rod, Jane, and Freddy (snoball), Monday, 17 December 2012 20:20 (twelve years ago)
Really? It's cheesy as fuck, makes dinky rhythm noises and farting sounds - but has an oddly powerful sequencer inside it. I bet if I shoved it through my effects pedals it could be interesting.
― Rob M Revisited, Monday, 17 December 2012 20:43 (twelve years ago)
Never saw one of those before. Looks amazing. Use it!

We're still on for 2/25. I had planned the extra month in case a Love remix was in the cards, but I don't think that will happen. The songs are too good on their own.

This is going to be so awesome.
I've got the megaupload activated, I'll get them on Soundcloud this weekend and yes, we'll be all set for Monday.
Wound up with 16 or 17 tracks. Shortest one is just over a minute. Longest one is like 8:25.
― pplains, Thursday, 21 February 2013 14:38 (twelve years ago)
Whoa, nice! I figured there might be a delay just because these things always take longer than you expect. Looking forward to hearing it!
― Z S, Thursday, 21 February 2013 14:50 (twelve years ago)
also, i think the casual use of the phrase "I've got the megaupload activated" would blow people's minds in 1953

i can imagine william gibson writing that in an early draft of Neuromancer and giving himself a grin in the mirror, like, "you magnificent bastard, you've done it again"

Good idea. Maybe I can petition a mod to alter the thread title.
WYWY has the second-most plays on my iTunes from this list.
The first is Paul MarioCartney since it's short and I damn near crack up anytime I hear it.

It's funny it nearly all turned out so mellow. I'm glad I didn't the chance to do the miami bass wywy I had planned.
Long Long Long and Good Night are my favourites, I think.
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 25 February 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)
I was tickled with how deconstructive the content was. Most of these don't even really sound like Beatle songs.
Put this in another board's hands and every song would've sounded like The Rutles.

ZS's "Long Long Long" is a great aural companion piece to his gif creation over the years.
I hate to ID favorites because they're all inspired, but had "holy shit awesome" moments at Strawberry Fields, Long Long Long and of course WYWY.

― AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 10:43 (twelve years ago)
I was real tempted to sequence it in order of appearance on their respective albums -- have WYWY start "side 2", hide "Her Majesty" as an untitled track.
But with both Tomorrow Never Knows and Good Night on there, I got thrown off that idea and just went in order of release. Still came out pretty cool. We can thank serendipity for that one.
― pplains, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 15:11 (twelve years ago)
Thanks, serendipity. Which one is his track?
― Mark G, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 09:46 (twelve years ago)

― less Shin, more Stubbs (weatheringdaleson), Thursday, 28 February 2013 19:15 (twelve years ago)
It's funny how nobody, other than the peerless Paul MarioCartney, took on a really big track. Three from the Blue Album, nothing from the Red Album. Only one single.
I know this is ILM, but if you released the originals it'd make for a pretty obscure Beatles comp for a lot of people.
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 1 March 2013 16:54 (twelve years ago)
Pretty much the same thing for the songs that were claimed, but due to a variety of legitimate reasons, weren't submitted:

I was a stickler for the whole calling your song and then submitting it, just because I knew any other way, I would get way too disorganized and probably leave off somebody (like I did in my Husker Du poll.)
But that said, when this showed up in my inbox unannounced, I really had no choice but to accept it on the spot, now did I?
