Loathe the first, can tolerate the second.

that's where i was at a few months ago but i straight up enjoy "Somebody" now. totally just making this thread in hopes of a landslide Gotye victory.

shipl.de.al (some dude), Monday, 11 June 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

I know there are a lot of contrarians around here but I have to imagine there are very few ILM posters who are all "Woo fun.! Fuck Gotye!"

have you guys heard the dude from fun. try to sing live? let me tell you, one thing it is not is "fun"

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:00 (thirteen years ago)

"We Are Young" kind of reminds me of Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out," in that it starts at a sprightly tempo, then quickly slows down, and then stays at that slow, grinding, monotonous tempo for minute after minute until the song finally ends.

shipl.de.al (some dude), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

honest to god i wd rather listen to faux "last song at the school disco" than that annoying whiny Sting voice of gotye dude

'Last Moments Robot' Comforts You To Death (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

hearing him try to sing in a controlled studio environment is no picnic either, tbh

It sounds like "Take Me Out" were "Take Me Out" lacking an interesting rhythm, good guitar riffs, and a singer who wasn't adenoidal.

there's no "would" here, they both exist if you want to listen and compare (i don't)

shipl.de.al (some dude), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:04 (thirteen years ago)

I like both of these songs, but I like the fun. one slightly better - mostly because I haven't been bombarded with shitty remixes of it yet like the Gotye one.

he was super off on the MTV Movie Awards

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

it's also pretty objectively hilarious that "We Are Young" is the direct result of an indie fuxx listening to Thank Me Later and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and deciding this hip hop thing is pretty exciting and oh how can we incorporate that influence into our music

shipl.de.al (some dude), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

hah shows how long since i saw Glee. anyway Gotse's voice just makes me wanna nut-punch him

Mexès Coleslaw Massacre (Noodle Vague), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

You can ask the two singers to switch songs and it wouldn't make a damn bit of difference.

it's also pretty objectively hilarious that "We Are Young" is the direct result of an indie fuxx listening to Thank Me Later and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and deciding this hip hop thing is pretty exciting and oh how can we incorporate that influence into our music

he's an emo/pop-punk fuxx but yeah probably the same thing would've happened

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

neither of these songs are very good. "we are young" is more directly offensive, "stiutk" is blander/milder.

shipl.de.al (some dude), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:10 (thirteen years ago)

As a NZer, I'm duty-bound to vote against Kimbra.

etc, Monday, 11 June 2012 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

well i guess that was their genre-bending second record but i don't know, the format were pretty universally appreciated by people in emo scenes, and dude's a huge pop-punk fan, is why i make the association

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

I hate them both but the other day I realized that Gotye sounds exactly like Sting during the chorus and now I keep picturing Sting singing it and it's weird.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

if Sting sang it he wouldn't make you forget that he had expected to live his life without ever meeting this "somebody" again.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:16 (thirteen years ago)

Gotye sounding like Ozzy is a much revelatory comparison than Sting imo

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:29 (thirteen years ago)

it's really not uncanny. the Sting comparison is more of a cultural/aesthetic association than about the timbre of their voices.

No, it's his voice!

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

The Kimbra part is vital to the structure of the Gotye song, imo. It didn't have to be her who sang it, but it needs to be a duet.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 June 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

That fun. chorus is HUGE, but the rest of the song is really a slog.

The Gotye melody is pretty elaborate and successful, I think. Is the problem for most people with his voice? Also, is it widely known that the guitar part is a sample? I totally didn't realize that. The added xylophone is pretty key.

yeah i mean part of the appeal of "Somebody" for me that it's an international pop hit with a backing track that basically sounds like an '80s Tom Waits song

shipl.de.al (some dude), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

listening to gotye again, i def hear '80s tom waits in the backdrop more than ozzy in the vocal

da croupier, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

and actually, imagining tom waits' reaction is the first delight i've gotten out of this song since realizing he sings "your love" just like the outfield

da croupier, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

IDGI to me it just sounds like a generic schmindie backing track

this guy's a gangsta? his real name's mittens. (Hurting 2), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

it is generic schmindie, but it also sounds like 80s tom waits. that's def a venn diagram in 2012

da croupier, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

I mean I kind of get a male Norah Jones vibe from the verse, which is not even schmindie I guess

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

I hope Gotye's success inspires Justin Timberlake to return as a more Phil Collins-like figure, to help millenials segue to a more adult contemporary mentality.

da croupier, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

We Are Young is just really lumbering, especially during the chorus, it's straight out of that Snow Patrol school of 'writing an anthem in the way that some people know how to build a wall' with some Janelle tacked on. The Gotye song is perfectly pleasant.

Matt DC, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:30 (thirteen years ago)

The intro to Goyte sounds like it wants to be the intro to "Senses working overtime". And the chorus of fun. sounds like "A little respect" slowed down. My 6 yr old son loves Goyte, just so he can shout "didn't have to CUT ME OFF" as loud as he can. I hate both songs intensely. Spoiled ballot for me.

Gotye seems like a bro, even if more than half his album (and, I guess, his previous albums?) is boring.

Nah, I totally get it. Of course, I'm an admirer of the song too, but I mean...I get why that one crossed over the way it did. That's some really highbrow-sounding shit for people who may buy three cds a year and quit listening to the radio when Sting stopped charting. If all these people collectively buy the cd or the single on iTunes together, it gets pushed up the charts by a unified force.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 June 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

that gotye song, aside from whether you think it's good or bad or he's worthy or not etc., is a hell of a crazy earworm. someone should really figure out why that is. what's the particular progression/melodic line/voicing that makes it so hard to get rid of?

i kinda dig it when uncool dad-pop/NPR stuff like this Adele gets really big one the basis of crazy undeniable pop hits like this and rolling in the deep because i think it gives poptimists fits

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 11 June 2012 23:23 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not at all suggesting that this was the only demographic responsible for its success -- no song becomes a hit this sizable by appealing to a large cult (The Singles Jukebox reviewed it last fall; it took that long for word of mouth to keep yapping). Look at Foster The People.

I also didn't know the Gotye song wasn't Sting, which is actually kind of a compliment (crut OTM). I think it's well-crafted. (Will defend Norah Jones's first album all day long too.) I like Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the Disco but the Fun. song really doesn't have much to it besides a chorus hook. It certainly doesn't have either of those bands' sense of rhythm.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:38 (thirteen years ago)

lol @ the girls being most exciting about me meeting Mandy

long story short, i ran the teleprompter for an event she spoke at -- I got there for the rehearsal the day before, and had this huge script to format for the prompter, and was maybe halfway done when they put me onstage w/o telling me a) that we were doing something from the 2nd half of the script and b) that the speaker was Mandy Moore. so i see someone vaguely familiar in sunglasses onstage, then find the 'Mandy' part of the script and go woah that's her! and we have this really awkward rehearsal where the prompter script is full of blank space and unnecessary stage directions and she's struggling to read it and trying to complain about it as nicely as possible -- I call out "I'm working on it!" and probably sounded like I was made or something so she came over and introduced herself and was super nice about making sure we got it fixed. didn't get to talk to her the next day when we did the actual event, would've told her Saved was a dope movie if i got a chance (because it would've been weird to tell her how many times i've watched Chasing Liberty).

i predict i will hate it in 2 days.

"we are young" - i originally thought it was a woman singing this but its not! i also at one point thought it was the arcade fire, but i guess its also not.

bene_gesserit, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 02:27 (thirteen years ago)

when i initially saw the "Somebody" video i was all oh fuck this shit and would turn off the song every time it came on for a month or two, but eventually tolerance turned to a pretty strong fondness

shipl.de.al (some dude), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 03:08 (thirteen years ago)

The other day, I saw this group of young people, upper middle school maybe, or maybe high school, walking down the street some sunny afternoon, sharing earbuds and belting "We Are Young" at the top of their young lungs, and I thought, man, fuck you young people.

Anyway, if it's the end of the night, and the bar is closing down, why does the song's singer need to reiterate that he'll take you home ... tonight? It's redundant. Like "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight." When else is he going to take you home tonight? Tomorrow?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 03:09 (thirteen years ago)

Regarding the "sounds like Ozzy" / "sounds like Sting" thing with Scrotye, the Ozzy comparison rings far more true to me. You can tell Gotye is singing at the top of his range, and that strain gives the vocal its urgency (listen to Ozzy in "Changes"--same thing). Whereas Sting's normal range is at least that high, so when he sings up there you don't get that strain. It colors the voice totally differently, and while I can hear the Sting comparison, it's Ozzy all the way. It's also the way Gotye starts each word with a soft attack and then swells in volume afterward; Ozzy does that as well, but Sting does not.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 12 June 2012 16:48 (thirteen years ago)

brio, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

there's a similarity in timbre when they go up but Gotye's mid-range is much more open. Also, vintage Sting is much more comfortable on those notes than Gotye, who is really placing high in his head voice over his passagio. By comparison, Sting is barreling through his passagio and there's not that much of a timbre change throughout most of his range.

i was listening to it w/ friends in the music business and they were like "it sounds exactly like the stuff we play to amuse ourselves when we're smoking weed with friends and would never in a million years think to share with an a&r person"

other friends just got back from brazil a few months ago and said theyve never been somewhere where a single song was so omni-present-- every car, open window, store p.a., bar-band was playing it wherever they went

♆ (gr8080), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

That's totally what it sounds like but at the same time I can absolutely see how it would appeal to the masses. I could see my mom thinking it was a "nice song".

also not sure why people already hate the kimbra but maybe she is more annoying in NZ. her voice is alright.

Her harmonies on the second chorus is the only part of the song I really like. (DJP otm)

is Kimbra even on the 2nd chorus? I always expect to hear her voice in the background after her verse ends but it sounds like all Gotye.

bronytheus (some dude), Friday, 15 June 2012 10:40 (thirteen years ago)

I am certain she's doing the higher harmony parts on both the lyrics and the background aahs, plus you can definitely hear her singing with him at the very, very end

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Friday, 15 June 2012 16:38 (thirteen years ago)

omg... that 'eu si te pego' song has been inescapable in Mexico too but if I thought that one was annoying the english version is completely laughable. 'Eu si te pego' should translate as something like 'I'd fuck you' not 'if i catch you'. The lyrics in english sound so... wrong. Why would they even attempt to translate it?

See, if you English-speaking folks didn't have such a phobia for foreign languages we wouldn't have these sort of abortions in the first place.

Also you'd be able to see cool, original, international cinema instead of making remakes of it.
