1990s electronic music poll (tracks and albums): nomination thread – deadline on September 15th, at 12 PM (GMT)

Okay, since the resolution for the 00s electronic dance music poll has been postponed a bit, I thought I could already started a nomination thread for the 1990s poll. I decided it should include both tracks and albums, because why not? I won't start the actual poll thread until after the 00s poll's results have been posted, so you have at least until then to nominate. Below are the rules for the nominations:

1) You can nominate up to 40 tracks and 20 albums, no more.

2) The track/album must have been originally released between 1990 and 1999. I know some of you wanted late 80s to be in the poll too, but I had no idea what should be the earliest year to be included (1988? 1987? 1986?), so I thought it'd be clearer to focus just on the 90s. Someone else can do a 80s dance music poll later on.

3) This poll is focused on the sort of electronic music that developed from 1980s house, techno, and electro. If you want to nominate less dancey stuff like ambient or downtempo, I'm fine with it too, since there was so much overlap between those genres and more danceable electronic music. However, genres that have a different lineage, such as rap, synth pop, new age, avant-garde classical music, etc should not be included, even if they had a high electronic quotient. I'm not gonna disqualify any nominations though, so it's up to you judge whether a particular track or album fits here. Ultimately, the voters will choose that.

4) Stuff with vocals and/or traditional instruments is okay as long as the track/album has more electronics than those. So, for example, most Eurodance tracks are fine, but music that's done mostly with traditional instruments, like Red Snapper or the first disc of 4 Hero's Two Pages, shouldn't be nominated.

5) I'll tell you the deadline for the nominations once I know when the 00s poll is over.

So go on, start nominating!

The deadline for the nominations will be on September 15th (Saturday), at 12 PM GMT.

I'm sure all my favorites will be here at some point but Underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman is the album that absolutely needs to be on there

Oh yeah, please add your nominations in this format:

TRACKS:

Artist name - Track name:

ALBUMS:

And don't bury them in the middle of your other comments, make it clear what part of your post is the nomination list.

Tuomas, Thursday, 28 June 2012 13:29 (twelve years ago) link

what about dj mixes? either consider them as album or create a new category.

DJ mixes count as albums, sure.

Do you prefer that we list all of our nominations at once, in one comment? (As opposed to me posting, say, 10 now and 50 next week, for example.)

As much as people like Autechre around here (huge fan myself), I wonder if anything will make it to the Top 50. There is an embarrassment of riches in their 90s output.

I snuck EP7 on my list. I don't care what the names says, it's a 70-min Autechre album; and a brilliant one at that.

azaera, Thursday, 28 June 2012 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't have a separate category for EPs, but everyone's free to nominate them in the album category.

Tuomas, Thursday, 28 June 2012 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

Hmph. At least the last poll included 'dance' in the title. You can't just appropriate the term 'electronic music', you know.

emil.y, Thursday, 28 June 2012 18:08 (twelve years ago) link

Well, I tried to define the sort of electronic music we're polling here in the initial post. I didn't want to talk about "electronic dance music" because, A) "electronic music" is a more commonly used umbrella term for these genres (I know there are other types of electronic music too, but the term has been used like this at least since the 90s, it's not my appropriation), and B) I didn't want to get into endless arguments on which tunes are dancey and which are not. Like I said, you're free to nominate whatever you want if you feel it comes from the techno/house/electro lineage, it doesn't have to be club music. Personally, I'm most likely gonna nominate a few ambient/ambient house/chill-out albums.

Tuomas, Thursday, 28 June 2012 19:42 (twelve years ago) link

I'm going to go out on a limb and think carefully carefully about each of my nominations (i.e. nominating things I'd actually vote for), so until I do that let me say thanks for getting this organized!

EDB, Friday, 29 June 2012 00:18 (twelve years ago) link

which is not directed at any noms here, but at the sort of blatant over-nominating of the 00s thread (of which I do not exculpate myself) which kind of eliminates the whole point of a nomination system. Just getting that out there.

Is trip hop allowed?

Moka, Friday, 29 June 2012 07:20 (twelve years ago) link

Trip-hop is a borderline case... I think it's okay if it's sample-based or otherwise electronic, but tracks where people play "real" instruments and tracks that are more hip-hop (i.e. are centered around rapping) should be excluded. So the tracks on the first Lamb album or Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" are okay, but "Karmacoma" isn't because it's really hip hop.

Tuomas, Friday, 29 June 2012 09:01 (twelve years ago) link

Oh shit, I just realized I totally forgot to nominate Genaside II's "Narra Mine". Hopefully Chap or some other UK hardcore head will nom it.

Tuomas, Friday, 29 June 2012 09:04 (twelve years ago) link

I'm hoping that the extra time will add a little bit more critical weight to this poll.

That said I don't know what to vote for, my musical tastes in the 90s were atrocious.

I considered all of those ambient records you've nominated, Gavin, but didn't think they fit within the parameters Tuomas set up for this poll. I didn't want to be the one responsible for opening that can of worms (after the endless debate in the 00s poll). But it really is hard to leave the ambient strain of electronic music out of a discussion of the best work of the 90s, isn't it?

azaera, Monday, 2 July 2012 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

If we're going down that route, someone might as well nominate 76:14, no?

azaera, Monday, 2 July 2012 19:33 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah I did pause for thought with some of them but I taking into account Tuomas' third point in the initial post I might as well go for it - the voting should bear out whether or not people consider the ambient stuff part of electronic music. I know my tracks nominations will be geared much more towards dancefloor-friendly genres though.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 2 July 2012 19:40 (twelve years ago) link

Wait, why wouldn't 76:14 count here? I guess there's a lot of gray area; SAWII is definitely something else, but say U.F. Orb really isn't too much different from its contemporaries.

Oh, you know what, I meant the Stonebridge mix. I didn't know that was a special mix.

The original version of "Show Me Love" is pretty obscure I think, it was only with the the Stonebridge remix (which came out two years later) that the tune became famous. The Stonebridge mix only keeps the vocals from the original version, everything else in it is new including the much-imitated synth line. Since I already nommed the Stonebridge version, you can replace you nomination with something else.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 08:04 (twelve years ago) link

With all the track nominations, I'm assuming you're nominating the original mix, unless otherwise specified. Since in electronic music the original mix isn't necessarily the best-known version (as with "Show Me Love"), it'd be wise to check discogs.com before posting your nominations, so you're not accidentally nominating something else than what you meant.

to be clear, my earlier nomination should be

Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless) (Basement Boys Strip To The Bone Mix)

Gavin, I already nommed the Foul Play remix of Null Lines (the more famous version), are you nominating the original?

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 20:48 (twelve years ago) link

i agree that these polls are probably too broad

i wouldn't mind seeing them split into a) house & techno poll b) hardcore / d&b / garage poll and c) idm / trip hop / ambient poll

then possibly a runoff between the top 50 in each

but whatevs

00s poll results should be ready tomorrow

Yeah, I can't really imagine much that isn't boringly canonical having a presence.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 00:55 (twelve years ago) link

you could make the same argument about singles and even polls in general

the late great, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 00:58 (twelve years ago) link

But I think the 90s were very much so a singles decade for dance music. Pioneering artists at the time tended to not be particularly bothered about the long playing form, and neither were the audiences. There are a handful of undisputed classic long players from the decade of course, but everyone with much of an interest knows what they are.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 01:05 (twelve years ago) link

Which is another way of saying I'm much more confident that the track list will contain cool stuff I've never heard before.

Separate poll results, obviously. And like I said, feel free to nominate DJ mixes and EPs to the album poll as well.

A few more comments/questions about the nominated tracks...

Nasty, Brutish & Short: you nominated "Goldie - Kemistry". However, AFAIK "Kemistry" is credited to Metalheads, it's not a Goldie solo release. Is the Metalheads version the one you meant?

Eazy: you nominated "Blue Boy - Remember Me". The version of "Remember Me" that became a hit is the Sure is Pure remix, not the original mix. Did you mean to nominate the Sure is Pure remix?

EDB: You nominated "I.A.O./The Black Dog – The Clan/Mongol Hordes". This track is included on the Black Dog Productions compilation, but I can't find any info that it was ever credited to The Black Dog (it's a Ken Downie solo track, and at that time The Black Dog was a trio). So I'm gonna list it as "I.A.O - The Clan (Mongol Hordes)", as it's credited on the Bytes compilation.

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 July 2012 07:44 (twelve years ago) link

NB. "Kemistry" is credited to Goldie on his 1995 album. I'm pretty sure the production/arrangement was substantially updated as well (d&b changed a lot from 1992 to 1995). So it depends on which version N,B&S is referring to.

Tim F, Thursday, 5 July 2012 08:06 (twelve years ago) link

Ah, thanks for the info! I'll credit it to Goldie then, unless Nasty, Brutish & Short says he meant the Metalheads version.

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 July 2012 08:16 (twelve years ago) link

iirc the track I was talking about was the second last track on the Goldie album (before one called 'You and Me'), but I think I also had a different version as a b-side to the Inner City Life single. I like both versions, but I meant the one on the album. (Actually, I think there might have been two versions of the album as well - mine was black and was a double CD version)

Özil Gummidge (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 5 July 2012 10:53 (twelve years ago) link

NBS you mean the 1995 version. It's the same on both the single and double versions of the album, and the version on the Inner City Life single was a Doc Scott remix. For contrast, here's the 1992 version - still ridiculously prescient mind:

This poll is focused on the sort of electronic music that developed from 1980s house, techno, and electro. I'm not gonna disqualify any nominations though, so it's up to you judge whether a particular track or album fits here....Stuff with vocals and/or traditional instruments is okay as long as the track/album has more electronics than those. So, for example, most Eurodance tracks are fine, but music that's done mostly with traditional instruments, like Red Snapper or the first disc of 4 Hero's Two Pages, shouldn't be nominated
― Tuomas, Thursday, 28 June 2012 14:23

Is trip hop allowed?
― Moka Friday, 29 June 2012 08:20

Trip-hop is a borderline case... I think it's okay if it's sample-based or otherwise electronic, but tracks where people play "real" instruments and tracks that are more hip-hop (i.e. are centered around rapping) should be excluded. So the tracks on the first Lamb album or Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" are okay, but "Karmacoma" isn't because it's really hip hop.

Do Portishead count? If so
Portishead - Dummy
― I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 3 July 2012

What's the general feeling re: Portishead? Because if that's allowed I might want to use my remaining nominations quite differently.

On a related note, would Primal Scream - Jailbird (Sweeney 2 Sabres of Paradis Remix) be OK?

Özil Gummidge (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:06 (twelve years ago) link

while I'm all for excluding Morcheeba, I think that the logic around how to deal with trip-hop is flawed as it would exclude "Safe From Harm" and most of the Tricky stuff

also, you would be potentially excluding stuff like Nomad's "(I Wanna Give You) Devotion" by those rules

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:06 (twelve years ago) link

Tracks:
34. The Orb - Majestic (Millwall mix)

Özil Gummidge (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 5 July 2012 20:16 (twelve years ago) link

I know the logic isn't completely sound, but if trip-hop with rapping is accepted, then it's a slippery slope to get hip-hop in too, and while I love hip-hop I think it shouldn't be included this one, it's had its own polls. Tricky, I don't really hear the aforementioned techno/house/electro lineage in his music, whereas it feels more evident in Lamb and early Massive Attack. Portishead is a borderline case, but like I said, I'm not gonna stop anyone from nominating them. This poll is about the electronic (dance) music continuum, and if the people who vote think Portishead is part of that, sure, why not?

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 July 2012 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

Mmm I'm seeing Kernkraft 400 as recorded and released in 1999 on discogs, rym and wikipedia.

What do you mean unremembered? I'm not particularly fond of them to be honest but those three are some of the most well known tracks of 90's electronica for better or for worse.

Red Snapper plays traditional instruments (drums, bass, guitar, horns) "live" (i.e. they don't loop or sample them) on their records. There are some additional samples used, but the drums/bass/guitar setup is the essence of their sound. I only mentioned the first Lamb album, because that's the only one I'm familiar with, but at least on that one the majority of sounds are generated with synths/samplers/drum machines/etc, not with traditional instruments. So, based on that, why shouldn't Lamb's first album be called electronic music and Red Snapper not?

Also, while I can see the point of doing split polls, the 00s poll proved it's already hard enough to get people to vote in an unified poll. Do you really want too see results for split polls where 10 or 15 people voted in each poll?

Tuomas, Thursday, 30 August 2012 11:11 (twelve years ago) link

Well you also have artists like elektro guzzi who play live instruments but are techno to a t. I don't think you can necessarily take these distinctions for granted. Just saying.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Thursday, 30 August 2012 11:18 (twelve years ago) link

Sure, but out of the three 1990s Red Snapper albums, I think only Making Bones has some tunes where they actually try to use those live instruments to emulate forms of dance music. The previous two albums are much closer to instrumental rock or jazz-rock than to electronic music.

But like I said, I'm not gonna restrict anyone from nominating anything they think belongs in this poll. At the very least some remixes of Red Snapper tunes (like DJ Food's awesome remix of "Last One") are perfectly valid here.

Tuomas, Thursday, 30 August 2012 11:26 (twelve years ago) link

I thought Red Snapper's whole schtick was "we make drum'n'bass on real drums and bass" - which was also Reprazent's schtick (kinda)

I agree with Tim: indie-dance wasn't really a "thing" in the 90s (except for some rock bands flirting with dance sounds, but I haven't seen any of that stuff nominated yet), so I'm sure there'll be plenty of proper house and techno in this poll.

I agree with Tim: indie-dance wasn't really a "thing" in the 90s

Haha what?

Matt DC, Friday, 31 August 2012 10:09 (twelve years ago) link

Well, by that I meant dance acts rising from and catering to the indie crowd. Like I said, of course there were some established indie bands (like Primal Scream) taking cues from dance music, or vice versa (like The Prodigy), but as far as I can remember they were more like anomalies than part of any larger scene or "thing". (Except maybe for the early 90s Madchester stuff, but that was pretty short-lived, wasn't it?)

Tuomas, Friday, 31 August 2012 10:19 (twelve years ago) link

Though of course my memories of the 90s may be skewed, since I've always been dance/electronic music head, maybe those who hung in the indie scene back then remember things differently?

There were easily as many of these then as there are now - but as you say it may feel different coming from a Euro perspective. Baggy and Big Beat was basically a whole scene devoted to dance music for indie kids. Trip Hop wasn't exactly shunned by the alternative community. Underworld, Chems, Prodge, Leftfield, Fatboy Slim, Happy Mondays - even the term "indie-dance" screams NINETIES to me.

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Friday, 31 August 2012 10:30 (twelve years ago) link

Plus if anything the hybridisation was more pronounced than it is now. Electroclash and the music that sprang from it throughout the 2000s seemed like a more streamlined and assimilated attempt at creating a composite than much of the nineties experiments.

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Friday, 31 August 2012 10:32 (twelve years ago) link

indie-dance was a thing in the 90s but (from what i consider to be vahid's perspective) I don't think ILM's taste in 90s dance is as corny as its taste in 00s dance, you know, bedsit dudes crying into their hankies over disco-trance chuggers - also vahid is ILM's biggest big beat stan, hence him labeling everything that moves "the new big beat".

Tim F, Friday, 31 August 2012 10:54 (twelve years ago) link

Electroclash and the music that sprang from it throughout the 2000s seemed like a more streamlined and assimilated attempt at creating a composite than much of the nineties experiments.

Well yeah, but this is exactly what I meant that indie-dance wasn't such a "thing" in the 90s as it was in the 00s. Back in the day it felt like most of that stuff was isolated experiments, and only in the 00s did it solidify into a proper genre and scene.

Tuomas, Friday, 31 August 2012 11:06 (twelve years ago) link

I think I'm going to avoid nominating this time, to avoid being the only person voting for one track, like the majority of my 00 list, and then pick through what's on offer to give them a better chance of appearing.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 31 August 2012 11:13 (twelve years ago) link

I think we have to distinguish between the different uses of the word "indie" in this thread.

I think vahid means someone who is both a "proper" dance fan but also a corny indie fuxx about it. Not someone who only listens to dance producers that have remixed Spiritualised and/or IDM.

I don't think there were really more "indie-dance" genres (or that they were more popular) in the 00s than the 90s, it's the sensibility which arguably proliferated.

Tim F, Friday, 31 August 2012 11:24 (twelve years ago) link

Yes, it's a difference in attitude. From a subjective POV I noticed a general shift in sensibility among music fans around the 2001 mark where the kind of extant tribalism of the nineties dissipated and suddenly dance music stopped being treated as "the other" by rock fans. That is to say, (even though they're often written off as cheesy, flash-in-the-pan fads), the electroclash and mash-up movements did a lot to reconcile fans of both dance and rock so it was no longer considered "unusual" to be into either/or.

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Friday, 31 August 2012 11:38 (twelve years ago) link

(either/or should really read "both")

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Friday, 31 August 2012 11:38 (twelve years ago) link

Kind of worth considering that just before this time the two big dance trends were UKG and trance - both fairly rock-unfriendly styles.

What I mean is that ILM, which prides itself on having a relatively catholic approach to music, does have a fairly narrow perspective in the grander scheme of things. I don't really care or know anything about hard house, but dance tastes are very urban middle-class here. Not saying this is a problem or a revelation, but it was something I was thinking about the other week when we were discussing the lack of race/gender disparity on the Pitchfork poll and Sick Mouthy brought up the issue of class too...

This poll won't really compare to the 00s poll for the simple fact of not covering a period within ILM's lifetime. There were a lot of feedback loop kinda tracks in the 00s poll - that developed a following here, blew up in end-of-year polls and then finished very highly in the 00s list. Happy House, that Friendly Fires mix, etc. No-one else would have voted It's What You Do into such a list.

This just won't be an issue with the 90s, but there'll be a lot of different eras and sounds jostling for space. The gap between 1990 and 1999 just FEELS so much bigger than that between 2000 and 2009.

I guess this is because the 90s (and the early 90s specifically) were still a "development era" for electronic music, when new sub-genres were popping up almost literally out of nowhere, whereas the 00s electronic styles were almost always part of some lineage that began in the 90s or the 80s? Or is this an oversimplification?

Anyway, hopefully this diversity of styles, as well as the lack of ILM consensus (since ILM wasn't around then) means that the results will be varied and interesting, not that votes will condense around taken-for-granted classics.

This nomination list is starting to resemble a salad made with peanut butter, and oysters, and gummy bears, etc. I was in a
trip hop/jungle/Bjork/IDM bubble for a good part of the 90s, so I probably only recognize (by name) about 30% of what's being nominated. Feeling a bit overwhelmed at the thought of trying to wrap my head around all these entries. Have no idea what the results will look like, which is a good thing.

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:20 (twelve years ago) link

come to think of it more like only four

but if you want to change the stakes from age 23-25 and 26-28 vs 30-35 then you win

oh yes, exactly

i was a 95-07 raver more or less

i might have a dj gig next month though

the late great, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:21 (twelve years ago) link

"indie v da real shitz rubbish" imo is about the club. you don't know how many times i heard "the dream of evan and chan" at the end of the night. i mean sometimes it would go from the sweatiest "french kiss" session into the OG dream of evan and chan! but that doesn't make them both real shit or indie imo, one is clearly not the real shit

but i agree that the home vs club thing can be a big canard

the late great, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:24 (twelve years ago) link

i used that example because i think "french kiss" was the track i heard most in that 10 years of clubbing, while "dream of evan and chan" was the *most indie* that i heard w/ regularity though of course i heard a lot of, i dunno, phoenix too

the late great, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:25 (twelve years ago) link

simian, ladytron, etc

the late great, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:25 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah that's spot on, a lot of these "indie" tunes were massive club hits. Maybe that's what changed in the 00s versus the 90s - less of a distinction between clubbing versus other - but I didn't start going to clubs / raves until 99, so I'm not sure if that's true.

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:27 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not going to be the one to nominate Flat Beat

Hmmmm. I've still got a few noms left. In the spring of 1999 I was in my first year of living in Italy. We had a tiny, shitty black and white TV which was permanently tuned to MTV because a)sometimes they spoke in English and b)the only way to change channels was to turn a dial until the interference slowly changed into something resembling a picture. Those Levis adverts were a treat, especially as for the first few weeks it wasn't at all clear what was being advertised - it was just a brief, frequently repeated programme featuring a man and a puppet listening to techno in an old car. And the puppet loved the music. They often played a version of Flat Beat on whatever Milan radio station it was that my radio was tuned into. This version was fantastic. Eventually the single came out. It was a bit rubbish - nothing much happened and it didn't have the good bit from the version I was used to. I bought it anyway because I saw there were various other mixes on it. I played those other mixes: none of them bore any resemblance to the version I had heard on the radio. I didn't like them. I returned to England in late July of that year. I bought some Sta-Prest jeans. I don't recall ever seeing anyone else wearing them*. Many years passed. It became possible to track down virtually any tune via the internet. I searched for the version of Flat Beat that I had heard on the radio. It didn't seem to exist anywhere in the known universe. More years passed.

*not my pair, that would have been odd

My favourite use of "Flat Beat" is in that Whitney bootleg.

I also bought the Pepe Deluxe album (and some twisted jeans) on the strength of this a year or two later:

this is just bad djing! just cos a shit dj mixes "french kiss" into superpitcher doesn't mean the latter is invalid as a dance track. personally i've never heard that remix in a club, ever, but it doesn't mean i think it's not real dance music because i'm not particularly in need of defining my taste in that way. it is quite obviously dance music... even if i never ever hear it in a club then i think this is the case.

once the authenticity game begins then it's sort of neverending tho, my point mainly was that the kompakt guys are quite a hardcore of dance music people, by any stretch, there's nothing imaginary about it, i've been to cologne for their parties, i've seen mayer and superpitcher play to crowds that are nothing like the sort of US indie stereotype you seem to invoke.

in my experience most people who like techno don't agonise over this sort of pedantry, but i'm speaking from the perspective of someone who grew up in a country where people like dance music.

the martian - lbh 6252876 *

* dunno if it qualifies, considering it's a comp of 12".

It qualifies; like I've said above, the "albums" category is flexible. You can nominate pretty much anything that isn't a single: EPs, DJ mixes, single-artist comps, multi-artist comps, as long as it was released in the 90s. The only extra rule is that if you're nominating a compilation, the majority of the material on it must be from the 90s.

Tuomas, Monday, 10 September 2012 08:01 (twelve years ago) link

So, for an example, an "acid house classic singles" compilation wouldn't be eligible, if most of the stuff on it is from the 1980s.

Tuomas, Monday, 10 September 2012 08:02 (twelve years ago) link

No, "Sincere" is definitely a 90s tune - 1998 in fact:

Various - LTJ Bukem Presents: Logical Progression
Various ‎– Blech II: Blechsdöttir

hey Tuomas - might be worth working out how to present mix albums - as opposed to compilations - in the final nominations list so it's easier for ppl to find or recognise them

(ftr the Blech albums were mixed by the PC & Strictly line-up of DJ Food)

┐(´ー`)┌ (sic), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 07:52 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah true. I assume all mixes, compilations and LPs will be put in the 'albums' list. I'm hoping that people will know the ones I mean regardless.

Blech II: Blechsdöttir is so good though, really captures everything about Warp in the 90s imo - except for the fact that it's mixed together!

- M.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 08:31 (twelve years ago) link

See, even at the height of my Warp fandom I didn't like the Blech mixes for some reason. Always thought they were a bit boring. I should listen to em again though and see if I appreciate them more now. Has someone nommed Coldcut - Journeys By DJ?

Common Factor - Dreams of Elsewhere

квас (☆), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 09:38 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I'll probably credit DJ mixes to the DJs who mixed them.

Blechsdöttir is a great nomination, I have such fond memories of it. I wasn't really following Warp in the mid-90s, so I made some great discoveries via that mix. It was probably the first time I heard anything Drexciya-related, for example.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 09:42 (twelve years ago) link

Basically the only flaw in it is that for some reason PC and Strictly decided to include that awful Jimi Tenor tune, which doesn't really jibe with the rest of the material at all, even if you like Tenor.

tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Thursday, 13 September 2012 02:35 (twelve years ago) link

IMO the Zed Bias remix (ineligible) blew the original out of the water.

If you really want some good breakbeat garage, there's the KMA already nominated, and the early (excellent) Stanton Warriors tunes like "Determined" and their remix of "Everybody Come On".

According to Discogs only the vinyl promo version came out in 1999 though, otherwise it's a 2000 release. So I'm gonna have to rule that one out; if a tune wasn't generally available in the 90s, it doesn't count as a 90s release.

Tuomas, Thursday, 13 September 2012 06:32 (twelve years ago) link

I'd certainly be astonished if anyone on ILX had heard the tune in 1999.

Tim F, Thursday, 13 September 2012 06:59 (twelve years ago) link

oh ok, I didn't really pay close attention. btw, Tim, I never vote for things I wasn't already familiar with in these polls. I don't trust my snap judgements enough to put something new to me over something I've known and loved.

blank, Thursday, 13 September 2012 07:40 (twelve years ago) link

I just noticed that Tears Of Velva - The Way I Feel was already nominated so technically I've got one left.

This is gonna be a vanity nom, but Tim's mention of breakbeat garage got me thinking of that maligned genre of nu-skool breaks. Probably should go for Layo & Bushwacka!, but this:

TRACKS (40/40)

Métisse - Sousoundé (FreQ Nasty Vs. B.L.I.M. Edit)

MikoMcha, Thursday, 13 September 2012 07:59 (twelve years ago) link

Quite a few excellent breaks tunes on the first Layo & Bushwacka album (esp. "Dead Man Walking") but "Deep South" is so far and away the best tune on that album (and not even really a breaks tune) that it would have felt odd nominating anything else.

Can't remember that Metisse track!

MikoMcha, Friday, 14 September 2012 07:26 (twelve years ago) link

can you do a full noms list so far so ppl can easir check what still needs nominating?

┐(´ー`)┌ (sic), Friday, 14 September 2012 09:03 (twelve years ago) link

I haven't compiled the track nomination list, but here's the album noms list:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiVOdCUDZoLxdGhnMXpZOTdyal9jNTJRNFVaTV91aHc

200 album nominated so far, I think we can do more?

Also, when I add the title of Global Communication's album, "76:14", to the Excel spreadsheet, it keeps changing it to "76:14:00". And Google docs does the same! Does anyone know how I could make them accept it as text only, not as some kind of formula, so the extra :00 wouldn't be added there?

Tuomas, Friday, 14 September 2012 09:17 (twelve years ago) link

Not at my computer but I think you need to click on the offending square and change something in the format section of excel so that rather than it being set to represent time, it's just standard text.

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Friday, 14 September 2012 09:20 (twelve years ago) link

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Friday, 14 September 2012 09:21 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I've tried that, but I have no idea what to change it to. There doesn't seem to be a "standard text" option there.

Tuomas, Friday, 14 September 2012 09:21 (twelve years ago) link

(x-post)

Tuomas, Friday, 14 September 2012 09:21 (twelve years ago) link

Great job compiling that Tuomas, but I do feel that more albums could be nominated.

I'm thinking there could at least be some stuff by Wagon Christ, Luke Vibert, DJ Krush, Urban Tribe, Nightmares on Wax, Kid606 (maybe), Cristian Vogel, Planetary Assault Systems... There's tons of possible comps to nominate as well.

MikoMcha, Friday, 14 September 2012 09:43 (twelve years ago) link

Add a single quote before typing, and Excel should accept it as text rather than number or time/date format.

So you'd type '76:14
