idk... considering that "shutterbugg" was a TOP SINGLE OF THE YEAR in basically every publication, i think it's an indication of this song's quality that it's landed w/ a thud amongst the type of people that still have high expectations for big boi solo singles

I just put out two records from it - "She Said OK" with Theophilus London and "Gossip" with UGK and Big K.R.I.T. The fans are excited. On the new album I've got Kid Cudi and Little Dragon. I just did a cut with A$AP Rocky the other night too, so it's action-packed.

It's hard for me to defend BB's timbre when he's so good at subverting his own talents.

this sounds a bit like a statistic pulled from your ass. i still care about yelawolf. i don't know why a slightly patchy major label debut (which still had a decent number of highlights) would make anyone stop caring; if they did it's unlikely they cared that much in the first place. anyway my point was more that if you felt the album was a misstep, talk about the music and the songs, not some nebulous hand-wavey idea of "buzz"

Trunk Muzik was my favorite rap album that year and I didn't listen to Radioactive twice.

yeah lex see sometimes when people say "buzz" they're not talking about industry or media, they're talking about ground level fan satisfaction

"ground level fan satisfaction" is a bit more than "all of my friends" though, which is where people talking about that kind of buzz usually fall down

most people agree that about half the album was good. you're just the only person who seems to think that was enough.

like if your batting average goes down 50% from mixtape to album, yes people will say you dropped the ball and probably stop paying attention (especially if it doesn't sell)

i'd rather have an album with genuine high points (even if just half of it) than one which is boringly solid throughout but without a single song i completely love (à la the new brandy) - the latter is far more likely to make me stop paying attention

anyway i'm not saying it was a great album or anything, and yeah he didn't pull off the transition to a major label release, but 50% very good = not terrible. kinda feel like the fact that it didn't sell is making people judge it more harshly than they should

because there's nothing sadder than selling out without actually selling

The reviews I read of this year's Heart of Dixie mixtape all frame the tape around the premise that Radioactive was a potentially career killing disaster.

Also, Yela opens the tape by rapping “Why do I feel like I never had Marshall Mathers’ co-sign sometimes?/Like Radioactive failed? Maybe when I tell myself I’m one of the best, I’m just lyin’," so he seems to think something went wrong there, too.

This is Phantogram, by the way. I actually like them quite a bit but they have no place on a fucking Big Boi record. (Plus the collab they've already teased from the Big Boi record sucks.)

Yes I like that too. First half of the album holds up, then Big Boi keeps forgetting to rap and the guests take over and it all unravels.

Oh, HERE we go. Was about to start a thread on this since I couldn't find anything. Just stumbled on this on Spotify while looking for Lucious Left Foot and did a double-take: Big Boi has a new album?

I'm listening to it for the first time and it's sounding great. Couple hipster-bait moves that are so left-field they don't look like cash-ins (Wavves?!), especially amidst the general MAME/keyboard DIY sound of this thing. Feels of a piece. Great hooks, haven't had time to dig into the verses yet or anything. But I'm gonna keep it in rotation.

ok it did kind of hit a wall with 'tremendous damage' followed by 'descending.' Which...I guess is the end of the album? I hate how vague Spotify is about this stuff.

finally got around to hearing this. can't imagine who would stan for this outside of people who heard the second Crystal Castles album and thought to themselves "wouldn't it be cool if there was RAPPING on this album?"

I still love gossip unrepententantly. Been awhie since I tried the full album but the hits competely outweighed the (admittedly abysmal) misses
