Big Boi on Pimp C appearing on "Gossip":"I had the verse for years. It was on another unreleased record that I had from Organized Noize and it just matched up perfectly. I was already getting Bun B on there and just to put Pimp C on there made it turn out great."

putting pimp & KRIT back-to-back was a terrible idea
― J0rdan S., Friday, 6 July 2012 18:02 (thirteen years ago)
idk... considering that "shutterbugg" was a TOP SINGLE OF THE YEAR in basically every publication, i think it's an indication of this song's quality that it's landed w/ a thud amongst the type of people that still have high expectations for big boi solo singles
― J0rdan S., Friday, 6 July 2012 18:03 (thirteen years ago)
I just put out two records from it - "She Said OK" with Theophilus London and "Gossip" with UGK and Big K.R.I.T. The fans are excited. On the new album I've got Kid Cudi and Little Dragon. I just did a cut with A$AP Rocky the other night too, so it's action-packed.

― some dude, Friday, 6 July 2012 18:10 (thirteen years ago)
i don't think the hook or beat on "gossip" are really any good and also big boi's verse has some really dated references, idk. i found the whole thing very off putting.
― J0rdan S., Friday, 6 July 2012 18:15 (thirteen years ago)
It's hard for me to defend BB's timbre when he's so good at subverting his own talents.
― a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 6 July 2012 18:16 (thirteen years ago)
wasn't sure at first if you meant Big Boi or Bun B but it doesn't really matter, they're both talented guys who are going to be forever rudderless and suffering diminishing returns outside their duos

The Yelawolf album effectively killed his buzz. It had a couple of good songs, but not nearly enough.

Almost everyone who cared about Yelawolf before the album stopped caring about him with the album, and he gained no new fans, Lex.
this sounds a bit like a statistic pulled from your ass. i still care about yelawolf. i don't know why a slightly patchy major label debut (which still had a decent number of highlights) would make anyone stop caring; if they did it's unlikely they cared that much in the first place. anyway my point was more that if you felt the album was a misstep, talk about the music and the songs, not some nebulous hand-wavey idea of "buzz"
― #YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 10:55 (thirteen years ago)
Trunk Muzik was my favorite rap album that year and I didn't listen to Radioactive twice.

I did too. And I was a huge fan.

We could talk about the music, but the music wasn't very good.
― weak willie (longneck), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:38 (thirteen years ago)
yeah lex see sometimes when people say "buzz" they're not talking about industry or media, they're talking about ground level fan satisfaction
― some dude, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:39 (thirteen years ago)
about half the album was very good
― #YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:40 (thirteen years ago)
"ground level fan satisfaction" is a bit more than "all of my friends" though, which is where people talking about that kind of buzz usually fall down
― #YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:41 (thirteen years ago)
most people agree that about half the album was good. you're just the only person who seems to think that was enough.
― some dude, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:43 (thirteen years ago)
like if your batting average goes down 50% from mixtape to album, yes people will say you dropped the ball and probably stop paying attention (especially if it doesn't sell)
― some dude, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:44 (thirteen years ago)
i'd rather have an album with genuine high points (even if just half of it) than one which is boringly solid throughout but without a single song i completely love (à la the new brandy) - the latter is far more likely to make me stop paying attention
anyway i'm not saying it was a great album or anything, and yeah he didn't pull off the transition to a major label release, but 50% very good = not terrible. kinda feel like the fact that it didn't sell is making people judge it more harshly than they should
― #YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:48 (thirteen years ago)
because there's nothing sadder than selling out without actually selling

that one track with kid rock is still amazing but yeah i can't remember any of the others on there that i liked. the one w/ lil jon is cool actually.
but yeah i've effectively stopped caring about yelawolf... it's not so much that the album was bad per se as it was that he seemed so noncommittal & it just all came off really poorly. saying that it killed his buzz is a pretty accurate description! i.e. he's released a few mixtapes since then & i haven't seen a single review of one or anyone talk about them on twitter etc
― pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

i actually did listen to the yelawolf/travis barker EP, it was ok
The reviews I read of this year's Heart of Dixie mixtape all frame the tape around the premise that Radioactive was a potentially career killing disaster.
Also, Yela opens the tape by rapping “Why do I feel like I never had Marshall Mathers’ co-sign sometimes?/Like Radioactive failed? Maybe when I tell myself I’m one of the best, I’m just lyin’," so he seems to think something went wrong there, too.
― Evan R, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 14:41 (thirteen years ago)
I co-sign w/ all the travesty talk.
This is Phantogram, by the way. I actually like them quite a bit but they have no place on a fucking Big Boi record. (Plus the collab they've already teased from the Big Boi record sucks.)

before anyone asks i'll preface this by saying i have a promo, i don't think this has leaked
so i'm not sure yet if this is genuinely terrible or not but wow. every song i'm like "hmmm you know this one doesn't sound terrible" and then someone who isn't sleep brown comes to sing the chorus & it's just like *closes eyes, exhales slowly*
the wavves track is truly as bad as you imagined it would be

― sisilafami, Thursday, 29 November 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)
yeah that's basically about right -- "descending" is actually pretty nice

the '80s retro kelly rowland single is ok -- like a solange song by someone who can sing
― RIP Gramp C (some dude), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:27 (thirteen years ago)
Yes I like that too. First half of the album holds up, then Big Boi keeps forgetting to rap and the guests take over and it all unravels.
― Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:30 (thirteen years ago)
Is it true the album contains the lines "we like to roleplay, put on some Coldplay"?
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 15:35 (thirteen years ago)
It does indeed, on one of the worst tracks.

Shoes for Running has a great Big Boi verse but the rest is reprehensible. He needs to appear on his own album more often instead of letting the guests dominate.
― Deafening silence (DL), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)
Big Boi never has & never will made an album where he's in the spotlight more than half the time
― some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)
Plan B: get better guests.
― Deafening silence (DL), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)
To his credit it's a ballsy record though - destined to be underrated and overrated by different factions.

Oh, HERE we go. Was about to start a thread on this since I couldn't find anything. Just stumbled on this on Spotify while looking for Lucious Left Foot and did a double-take: Big Boi has a new album?
I'm listening to it for the first time and it's sounding great. Couple hipster-bait moves that are so left-field they don't look like cash-ins (Wavves?!), especially amidst the general MAME/keyboard DIY sound of this thing. Feels of a piece. Great hooks, haven't had time to dig into the verses yet or anything. But I'm gonna keep it in rotation.

ok it did kind of hit a wall with 'tremendous damage' followed by 'descending.' Which...I guess is the end of the album? I hate how vague Spotify is about this stuff.
― Doctor Casino, Sunday, 23 December 2012 03:25 (twelve years ago)
finally got around to hearing this. can't imagine who would stan for this outside of people who heard the second Crystal Castles album and thought to themselves "wouldn't it be cool if there was RAPPING on this album?"
― Neanderthal, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 22:00 (twelve years ago)
I still love gossip unrepententantly. Been awhie since I tried the full album but the hits competely outweighed the (admittedly abysmal) misses

I like the first five tracks or so. Once Cudi shows up its peace out y'all
― Neanderthal, Thursday, 4 July 2013 01:08 (twelve years ago)
the track with Killer Mike is real dope, can't even remember the rest besides the awful, awful Wavves song
