Ross Nover: We did our first Super Art Fight, which was a small event, upstairs at the Ottobar [with headliner MC Chris].

NB: So originally it was going to be this side attraction in between bands. Sometimes when you go to shows, whether you're into the band or not, your attention wanders. Why not have something else going on?

MD: MC Chris is very particular about his opening acts. He likes to handpick them, he likes to have some control over them, and at the time we had no web presence. So he requested that weren't on the show. But Todd [Lesser] at the Ottobar thought that there would be an audience for what we do, so he said, "Alright, I still want you on the show tonight, but I'm going to put you guys upstairs." We were going to be very respectful. MC Chris goes on at 11 and we were going to finish at like, quarter of. So [we] go to the show, set up, and people are just entranced in the art [the competitors] are creating.

RN: And it's just so obvious that we're clearly capturing the audience's attention.

MD: In the transition period of us wrapping up and going downstairs, they had a DJ start playing upstairs.

NB: The volume levels were going up and, like, there was this party vibe in the room and it felt like something had exploded.

MD: We go downstairs. MC Chris is doing his thing, we're having a fun time. The bass from the DJ upstairs is so loud he can hear it onstage. And he calls us out, and he calls us "fags," and accuses us of trying to get on his show.

JN: So for our first official show, we wore shirts that said "White Rappers Hate Art Fight."

This past year when MC Chris was in Denver, he yelled at a girl in the first row for placing her beer on the stage between an opener and his performance and made her lose her place along the front row over it. He yelled at her through the mic, humiliated her, and would not continue with his show until she and her friend “got the fuck out of here.” Sure, she was a knuckle head for placing her beer there but he was totally being a dick.

She apparently stuck around and got super drunk because near the end of the show she got close to the stage and hurled her beer glass, hitting him in the dick. He freaked out (understandably) and ended the show early, but then bitched incessantly on facebook about it for at least a month to the point that I dropped him from my newsfeed. He even lectured on his facebook that fans shouldn’t come to his show and drink…pretty hypocritical considering his shows often happen in bars and he constantly raps about how high/fucked up he and his friends are/were.

Yeah, she was out of control, but get over it at some point and don’t blame all of Denver for that. He could have avoided the whole incident by not making such a big deal about her putting a drink on the edge of the stage. He could have told security prior to going on stage and had her removed more quietly. I like his rap but his facebook self comes off as really immature, petty, and bratty.

Can't wait for his emo nerd rap mixtape about all this.

ATHF is really it's own thing. The other Adult Swim stuff was mostly riffs of Hanna-Barbera imagery (Sealab, Space Ghost, etc.) or Home Movies (amazing).

honestly, no and kind of (he had a beard then). he was genuinely funny, at least when I was 14 I thought so. though he was one of those funny people who are always "on," everything he said was a joke/ he was always in character. in retrospect that is obnoxious, and over time I've learned to avoid those kinds of people, but at the time it was impressive. idk, i wouldn't have been surprised if he had turned into a comedian, but in high school, at least, he was a drama kid, not a nerd. not that I knew him that well. it's kind of tragic to me. he brought a lot of laughs to our production of romeo & juliet.

I saw him at Van's Warped Tour about 5 years ago with my then girlfriend. The girl I was dating was significantly more attractive than me. She and I went to his booth after the show to shake his hand and maybe buy merch. We get up to him and my girlfriend says "My boyfriend and I love your music" gesturing to me. He says "Do you know how fine you are? Why are you dating this fat fuck? Did your Dad rape you a bunch or something?" and then moved on to the next person in line. I stopped listening to his music that very day.

i saw this dude open for pinback. first he comes out and complains how cold the room is. (it was cold, to be fair.)

presses play on his boombox and does a few songs. stops one halfway through to berate two kids in the front row who are dancing and clapping along. he says they're clapping offbeat and messing him up.

no joke, in a room of 500 people, these two kids were the only people paying attn to him.

anyway, he starts another song and either stops it or finishes it, yells at the kids again, and then calls for security to toss them out. security looks at him like "ha ha ... this must be part of the act." but then they realize he's serious and lead the kids out the door. fortunately, the promoter went out and got them and brought them back in.

mc chris isn't worth getting mad over, but it was seriously fucking ridiculous, and the most unprofessional behavior i have EVER seen at a concert.
