i always think my favorite song from 1990 is "vision of love" but then i remember "groove is in the heart" and "nothing compares 2 u". damn. too hard to choose. its possible that VOL is my fave song of 1990 and NC2U is the BEST song of 1990 and GIITH is the funnest song played on the radio in 1990. or maybe ever. its possible for fave and best to be different. i mean NC2U is like a monolith of greatness. its perfection. VOL just hits me in the right way every single time i hear it. i just listened to it five times in a row in my store really really loud and it never gets old for me. don't know why! i don't even really care about the rest of mariah's debut album. there are some boring songs on that album.

Because it was released in 1988

Actually, all three of the songs I listed were 1989! ("Buffalo Stance" charted 4-'89 in the States; album came out a month later.) I was looking at the wrong Pazz & Jop year, oops.
1990 is harder! I kind of hate that P&J list, now that I look at it. Would probably go with "The Power" (which Old Lunch already mentioned above -- I like both versions a lot.)

I'd never heard the Onyx song till xhuxk posted it on Facebook sometime last year, so he gets credit for that one; knowing only their later hit, I was majorly surprised by how lyrical it is. Vagaries of the calender: add "Roam" to my list--the album's '89, but yes, '90 for the single--also Loose Ends' "Don't Be a Fool," which I had on a '91 year-end (must have appeared very late in '90).

Possibly: Black Box - Everybody Everybody. In my world, that song was everywhere and yet somehow a little obscure and under the radar at the same time. I didn't actually here it that often, but then I would catch a glimpse of it unexpectedly.
― _Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:20 (thirteen years ago)
The best song from 1990 was Dub Be Good To Me. A special year in my heart. I got a radio for Christmas '89 and it was the first step into appreciating music. I got Now 17 with my pocket money and by mid-year was keeping an insanely keen eye on the pop charts. A wholly overlooked year for pop.

1990 was unheralded because it was the last year that you could pinpoint tracks that fell between classic 80s electro and 90s rave/club music - Killer and Got To Have Your Love are good examples tracks that fall between that category.

I am as corny indie as they come and so it's remarkable to me that "Groove Is In The Heart" and "Everybody Everybody" stand so far above the rest for me, competing only with "Here's Where The Story Ends."
But yeah, this thread is an unrelenting wave of "Wait, THAT TOO?"
I'll mention "You Are Loved" by Blue Aeroplanes, which I really, really like, but which probably wouldn't crack my top 10 of songs mentioned here.

:) Slack Motherfucker came out in 1990? Huh. I would have probably guessed a couple years later if asked. Such a great song.

I think I spent more time listening to the radio in 1990 than in any other year. I love all these tracks, might have to make a CD-R or Youtube playlist or something.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 27 July 2012 11:38 (thirteen years ago)
there are some better songs but i never heard kyper's "tic-tac-toe" until very recently so i just want to give it a shout out

thank providence for this thread -- i am scanning photos from a 1990 yearbook, and this is just the soundtrack i need to figure out which pictures are the best.

― bb, Friday, 27 July 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)
I love this year so hard.. I wish I could count nirvana "In Bloom" for this.. it was on a sub pop VHS that came out in 1990..
if that doesn't count I'll have to go with "poison."
― billstevejim, Saturday, 28 July 2012 00:20 (thirteen years ago)
considering that amerikkka's most wanted came out this year, there's no question to me about the best 10 or so songs
― Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Saturday, 28 July 2012 00:41 (thirteen years ago)
"jealousy" by pet shop boys another one i loved at the time. i mean i still love just don't hear it like i heard it then. i had to check to make sure it was 1990 and it was one of those cases where the album came out in 1990 but the single (which was different than the album version) came out in 1991. i think i've got that straight. come to think of it, "so hard" and "being boring" would be on any 1990 list i made.

As Ned mentioned earlier, My Bloody Valentine's "Soon" is the best song ever recorded, and so it's definitely the best thing to come out in 1990.

I have the "Suicide Blonde" cassingle.

Officially released in fall of 1990 although didn't hit it big til next year... "Man in the Box" by Alice in Chains. The rest of the album isn't great but "Dirt" and "Jar of Flies" are.

For once, I agree almost completely. On the money.
Then I saw that BBD Poison is listed as meh, and realized that this is a list from some alternate universe that is almost exactly like ours except for 1 detail.

Leaden sexism. Didn't even need it then, not when his New Edition bros released comparable hits and BBD wrote and produced Another Bad Creation and the first Boyz II Men album.
