what is the best song from 1990???

i always think my favorite song from 1990 is "vision of love" but then i remember "groove is in the heart" and "nothing compares 2 u". damn. too hard to choose. its possible that VOL is my fave song of 1990 and NC2U is the BEST song of 1990 and GIITH is the funnest song played on the radio in 1990. or maybe ever. its possible for fave and best to be different. i mean NC2U is like a monolith of greatness. its perfection. VOL just hits me in the right way every single time i hear it. i just listened to it five times in a row in my store really really loud and it never gets old for me. don't know why! i don't even really care about the rest of mariah's debut album. there are some boring songs on that album.

all three of those songs are juggernauts

"groove is in the heart" cuz it made every girl in my junior high school wear pucci pants for the next year.

"Rhythm Nation", "Cruising For Bruising", "Turtle Power".

"Buffalo Stance"? "Bust A Move"? "Good Life"? Something by Warrant or Will To Power?

Never cared for Deee-Lite myself.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 19:27 (thirteen years ago)

Maybe my favorite song (def top ten) is from '90: "Here's Where The Story Ends".

Thunderstruck
Freedom 90

MarkoP, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

why do i remember buffalo stance being earlier than 1990? chuck's three are good though. even if he's crazy for not loving groove is in the heart.

scott seward, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 19:34 (thirteen years ago)

Because it was released in 1988

MarkoP, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 19:35 (thirteen years ago)

Actually, all three of the songs I listed were 1989! ("Buffalo Stance" charted 4-'89 in the States; album came out a month later.) I was looking at the wrong Pazz & Jop year, oops.

1990 is harder! I kind of hate that P&J list, now that I look at it. Would probably go with "The Power" (which Old Lunch already mentioned above -- I like both versions a lot.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

"love will never do (without you)" -- it's fresh on the brain since i just watched the video at a herb ritts retrospective.

The House of Love's "I Don't Know Why I Love You" was apparently a single in 1989, but it was included on their 1990 album (where I heard it). I'm still all over that song even now. I DO know why I love it.

nakhchi little van (some dude), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 13:30 (thirteen years ago)

I'd never heard the Onyx song till xhuxk posted it on Facebook sometime last year, so he gets credit for that one; knowing only their later hit, I was majorly surprised by how lyrical it is. Vagaries of the calender: add "Roam" to my list--the album's '89, but yes, '90 for the single--also Loose Ends' "Don't Be a Fool," which I had on a '91 year-end (must have appeared very late in '90).

clemenza, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 13:35 (thirteen years ago)

"Don't Be A Fool" charted in the UK during August/September 1990.

"Enjoy the Silence." Just listened to it this morning, actually.

LimbsKing, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

Possibly: Black Box - Everybody Everybody. In my world, that song was everywhere and yet somehow a little obscure and under the radar at the same time. I didn't actually here it that often, but then I would catch a glimpse of it unexpectedly.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

The best song from 1990 was Dub Be Good To Me. A special year in my heart. I got a radio for Christmas '89 and it was the first step into appreciating music. I got Now 17 with my pocket money and by mid-year was keeping an insanely keen eye on the pop charts. A wholly overlooked year for pop.

Adamski: NRG

*I was 9 yrs old, okay?

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:48 (thirteen years ago)

1990 was unheralded because it was the last year that you could pinpoint tracks that fell between classic 80s electro and 90s rave/club music - Killer and Got To Have Your Love are good examples tracks that fall between that category.

Yup, according to this, both "Pro-Gen" and En-Tact came out in 1990.

A Kim Deal two-fer of covers:

Pixies, "Head On"
Breeders, "Happiness is a Warm Gun"

LimbsKing, Thursday, 26 July 2012 14:38 (thirteen years ago)

oh whoops... the Pixies version was '91. Still a good song, though.

LimbsKing, Thursday, 26 July 2012 14:39 (thirteen years ago)

also love the noisy EP that Pavement put out that year.

The Cure - Harold and Joe

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Friday, 27 July 2012 01:43 (thirteen years ago)

I am as corny indie as they come and so it's remarkable to me that "Groove Is In The Heart" and "Everybody Everybody" stand so far above the rest for me, competing only with "Here's Where The Story Ends."

But yeah, this thread is an unrelenting wave of "Wait, THAT TOO?"

I'll mention "You Are Loved" by Blue Aeroplanes, which I really, really like, but which probably wouldn't crack my top 10 of songs mentioned here.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 27 July 2012 01:55 (thirteen years ago)

I think I spent more time listening to the radio in 1990 than in any other year. I love all these tracks, might have to make a CD-R or Youtube playlist or something.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 27 July 2012 11:38 (thirteen years ago)

there are some better songs but i never heard kyper's "tic-tac-toe" until very recently so i just want to give it a shout out

thank providence for this thread -- i am scanning photos from a 1990 yearbook, and this is just the soundtrack i need to figure out which pictures are the best.

urban dance squad's "deeper shade of soul" kinda ruled my 1990

bb, Friday, 27 July 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

I love this year so hard.. I wish I could count nirvana "In Bloom" for this.. it was on a sub pop VHS that came out in 1990..

if that doesn't count I'll have to go with "poison."

billstevejim, Saturday, 28 July 2012 00:20 (thirteen years ago)

considering that amerikkka's most wanted came out this year, there's no question to me about the best 10 or so songs

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Saturday, 28 July 2012 00:41 (thirteen years ago)

"jealousy" by pet shop boys another one i loved at the time. i mean i still love just don't hear it like i heard it then. i had to check to make sure it was 1990 and it was one of those cases where the album came out in 1990 but the single (which was different than the album version) came out in 1991. i think i've got that straight. come to think of it, "so hard" and "being boring" would be on any 1990 list i made.

scott seward, Saturday, 28 July 2012 01:30 (thirteen years ago)

billboard top 100 r&b songs is fun to look at. so is the top albums list. a pre-grunge world. a simpler time...

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 2 August 2012 23:30 (thirteen years ago)

As Ned mentioned earlier, My Bloody Valentine's "Soon" is the best song ever recorded, and so it's definitely the best thing to come out in 1990.

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 2 August 2012 23:32 (thirteen years ago)

after Janet Jackson's "Escapade."

I always figured "So Close" by Hall & Oates was a higher charting song but it's not in that hot 100 list.

it hit #11 (their last top 40 hit) and my local radio station played it a lot into 1991.

Happy Mondays "Step On"
Mother Love Bone "Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns"
Guns N Roses "Civil War" (i forget why this is technically 1990)
LL Cool J "Around The way Girl" (this was on the radio a lot more in '91 but album version is '90)
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Show Me Your Soul" (pretty woman soundtrack)
Don Henley "The Heart Of The Matter" (guilty pleasure)
Technotronic "Get Up (Before The Night Is Over)"

billstevejim, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

the don henley song has a mike campbell co-write credit like "the boys of summer" so no big deal

not a bad song but I prefer "The Last Worthless Evening"

Nirvana / Sliver/Dive - SP073. Released: September 1, 1990

Nate Carson, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

"Holy Wars" and "Seasons In The Abyss" are pretty outstanding.

billstevejim, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:52 (thirteen years ago)

Pixies "Velouria"
Teenage fanclub "Everything Flows"
Dino Jr "The Wagon"

billstevejim, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:53 (thirteen years ago)

also "Blowin It"/"I Live For That Look"

billstevejim, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:53 (thirteen years ago)

But I might personally have to go with "Dust Cake Boy" from Babes in Toyland Spanking Machine.

Nate Carson, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:53 (thirteen years ago)

Blur "She's So High" !!

billstevejim, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

Whitney Houston "I'm Your Baby Tonight"

billstevejim, Friday, 3 August 2012 16:57 (thirteen years ago)

Londonbeat "I've Been Thinking About You" would be my favorite guilty pleasure from this year (didn't chart in US until 1991 though)

billstevejim, Friday, 3 August 2012 17:00 (thirteen years ago)

Officially released in fall of 1990 although didn't hit it big til next year... "Man in the Box" by Alice in Chains. The rest of the album isn't great but "Dirt" and "Jar of Flies" are.

LimbsKing, Friday, 3 August 2012 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

yeah sometimes I put "Man In A Box" after "Girl In A Box" on 1990 related mix things

'Roam' by The B-52s. Still sounds very fresh to my ears now.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 3 August 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)

...and "Deadbeat Club"

LimbsKing, Friday, 3 August 2012 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

For once, I agree almost completely. On the money.

Then I saw that BBD Poison is listed as meh, and realized that this is a list from some alternate universe that is almost exactly like ours except for 1 detail.

enochroot, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 01:00 (six years ago)

Leaden sexism. Didn't even need it then, not when his New Edition bros released comparable hits and BBD wrote and produced Another Bad Creation and the first Boyz II Men album.
