P-Funk, maybe? I'm willing to rep for *some* stuff that would be classified jam band, but I would have to be on an impossible amount of drugs to relate to this.

WookieFoot is a high energy magical phenomenon sustained by a beautiful family of players and believers. We are ordinary people supporting each other to do extraordinary things. It’s a joy to have collaborated with sooo many of you kids, and we are proud of the love our tribe is creating. You have nurtured these seeds we planted and we thank you for that. We hope you enjoy the fruits of this community as we are.

there were a couple of 60s beach boys / jack kerouac looking burnout acid heads (my age) that he would come around with and i still see those guys in the mission and around east side of golden gate park occasionally, they always give me this look like I KNOW THAT GUY but the circuit doesn't quite connect.

Working in a MN record store for many years meant having to hear lots of dudes tell me about Wookiefoot. "I guess their singer spends a lot of his time in Peru. A lot of their lyrics are based on his experiences there." (actually this mighta been the Big Wu.) Selling tickets for all those Harmony Park fests was the fuckin worst.

Feel like this wouldn't be entertaining at all if the name was not "Wookiefoot".

There's a band in Atlanta called Groove Stain, which is probably the worst name ever, even worse than Wookiefoot. Maybe they can get some ironic love too.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:05 (thirteen years ago)

This is def not ironic love from me, just bemused eyeroll. Like, I sorta get the entertainment value of this carnival/bacchanal with 20 people on stage, and snake-dancing women and giant puppets or whatever. But the music is so massively not my thing that I can't even assess it.

'glown' with the king (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 15 February 2013 00:37 (twelve years ago)

Welcome festi-family to another bliss weekend at Harmony Park. This is the most magical fairy forest in all the land !! The Harmony playground is on a lake with giant oak elders providing shade and shelter for the whole campground. This sacred site has been a place for the live music community to gather and befriend one another around campfires and under majestic stars. Shangri-la is our last summer shindig and we come to play with each other one last time before winter….. come play with us !!

The size of Harmony Park allows for individuals to share their magic and make a big impact on the whole…. It was here that Wookiefoot got its first oppurtunity to “Make Believe” with the crowd. The overwhelming joy created sparked a Nationwide tour bringing Fairys, Fire, Drumming, and Prankstering to festivals all over….now with our own event we can now pull off anything and everything imaginable. We’ve had as many as 300 performers…. from Fire rituals, Free healing arts center, Arial dancing, Native American traditional drumming and chanting, A marching band, Alice in wonderland tea party, Parades, Spiral dancing, Labrinth work shop, 3D black light painting station …..and …on…and….on. We are asking you to bring your magic and share your gifts with the family !! The vision of everyone bringing something of personal meaning and value to give to a brother from another mother or a sister from another mister is HIGH HIGH !! What’s your gift ?!??!?…Drumming, dancing, singing, food, message, bubbles, hugs, stones, crystals, jokes, jewelry, fairy wings, stickers, costumes…. whatchu got ?!?!

one time my friends and i went to a best of the twin cities show at first avenue and one of the bands playing was this awful 12 person jam band fire-twirling and acrobatic nightmare named Wookiefoot and as they played a cover of "Scarlet Begonias" my friend mike started loudly and drunkenly bitching about the horror and a hippie near us retaliated by dumping an entire vial of patchouli on jeff and we all had to share a cab ride home in the winter with all the windows rolled up.

and thats what i think about the Greatful Dead.

If Lee Scratch Perry and Deadmau5 died, went to heaven, and recorded an album with Bradley Nowell and Jerry Garcia, they’d end up with something like Jon Wayne and The Pain’s new full length album “Surrender”.

Described as “High-Octane Rocky Mountain DanceGrass”, Whitewater Ramble (WWR) uses a simple recipe to craft it’s sound: start with bluegrass instrumentation, add drums, and finish with a boundary-less approach to grassing-up everything from disco house grooves to roots to Americana.

The Unity of Opposites, is a very old Greek philosophy that dates back to 535-475 BC. The philosopher Heraclitus, Pre-Socratic Era, was the first to recognize this way of thought. It is the thought that the existence of one thing or condition depends on the co-existence of the opposite of that thing or condition. Opposites create a tension between one another yet necessitate themselves. There would be no up without a down, no left without a right, and so forth. They manifest together.

Yamn chose this philosophical concept as the name of their album because their music unifies two genres most consider to be opposite of one another: hard rock and electronic music.

Heatbox, aka The One Man Entertainment System, is a Minneapolis based creative force known for his innovative live performance and uniquely diverse set of creative gifts. Heatbox effortlessly blends vocal percussion and vocal turntablism with the simulation of horns, strings, musical instruments, and various sonic anomalies. But that’s not all. He has mastered a wide range of music technologies while grounding them in a firm understanding of quality songwriting, singing, and the unifying power of creative expression via live performance. His dedication to the craft of beatboxing and live looping has earned the respect of the hip-hop community and jam music scene throughout the United States and abroad.

Dead Larry’s powerful blend of high energy rock, dance and funk shakes the foundation of modern music. From rock driven sea shanties to pulsating dance beats. From Beatle-esque harmonies to spine chilling screams. From shake-yo-booty funk jams to orchestral themes of space and time travel. Dead Larry is one thing: Original.

Mike Love in a live setting elicits common reactions that typically revolve around terms like “powerful” & “goosebumps.” Combining elements of traditional Hawaiian music, the message, Mike’s masterful guitar playing and looping & the low end organic push of Sam Ites’ percussion, the group has made instant and life long fans out of anyone who has been fortunate enough to catch them live off of the islands.

The Magic Beans are a traveling band from Nederland, CO set out to bring their unique, genre-blending music to the masses and inspire a good time. Their diverse songs move your mind, while tight grooves move your booty when they come to town or through the speakers. Drawing from a wide range of influences, The Magic Beans leave nothing off the table as they combine americana, funk, rock, and electronica into a one sound and sometimes even one composition. Their sound has been described as space funk, ameritronica, and groove grass.

This is timely because I accidentally discovered a terrible band called Yertle the Turtle (http://www.amazon.com/Slam-That-Turtle-EP-Explicit/dp/B0035G1A3M) and I think their soulless, flat style of funk would fit in really well with the rest of this garbage.

carl agatha, Friday, 25 September 2015 14:08 (ten years ago)

Like the song "Sexy Funk" (never has a song been so misnamed) started playing and I thought of this thread.

carl agatha, Friday, 25 September 2015 14:09 (ten years ago)

i'm spending way too much time watching the video clips of this year's lineup. when did shitty EDM become acceptable for these things, joining shitty reggae, shitty americana, and shitty funk?

the ever-colorful Wendy Soleil leads this group of talented musicians with her gorgeously full vocals, soulful songwriting and ecstatic devotion to her primary instrument, the ukulele.

call all destroyer, Friday, 25 September 2015 17:45 (ten years ago)

these groups/this 'scene' (what is this anyway? the upper midwest 'jam'/festival scene?) is really good at not doing jack shit for the planet while spouting a bunch of feel-good proselyting about clean water and shit.

It's like smooth jazz adult contemporary for wanna be hippies.

carl agatha, Friday, 25 September 2015 18:33 (ten years ago)

the biggest takeaway I guess from this music is that any band whose primary objective is to "mix" genres is terrible. Genre lines should be enforced at gunpoint like the borders of Soviet-era Eastern European states.

Ma$e-en-scène (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 25 September 2015 18:48 (ten years ago)

i like how dry this band's description is compared to the rest of them. just a couple of music majors playing prog:

With all four members having the distinction of being graduates of the University of Minnesota School of Music, Circle of Heat doesn’t mess around. They create a fusion of prog rock beat and jazz-style rock improvisation with a blues backbone and clean vocal harmonies. You never know what you’re going to get, except for musicians playing at the top of their game.
