gygax!, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

"So messed up, (I) want you here" from The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog".

Although I am partial to "I'd rather shoot a woman than a man" from Big Star's "O Dana".

gygax! got me thinking.. "i'm a street walking cheetah with a heart full of napalm" is as good an opening as "IWBYD", so it's hard... so hard...

Facetious answer: "IIIIIIII AAAAM IROOOON MAAAAAAAN"
Serious answer: "I remember how the darkness doubled/I recall lightning struck itself" - Television, "Marquee Moon"
Answer pertaining to a song you'd have to hear to fully appreciate: "I'minlovewiththegirlwhoworksatthestorewhereI'mnothingbut aCUSTOMER!" - The Replacements, "Customer"

'I always flirt with death, I'll get killed but I don't care about it'

Tragedy! For 30 years I've heard 'I'll get Killed but...' as 'Out at Kilburn', and thought it was a nice London reference to hanging around stoned meeting women on the sunny boardwalk that is Kilburn High Road.

I feel a new thread coming on...

"I don't like you, but I love you"

from 'you've really got a hold of me'.

although i saw a terrible thing on one of those "i love motown' things where diana ross, trying to describe the genius of smokey robinson, quoted that line and said " you see, smokey's not just saying he LIKES his girl, he's saying he LOVES her, that's so romantic..."

AAAAAAARGH!

On the other hand.

TMFTML (TMFTML), Friday, 27 September 2002 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm tempted by the nerve of starting a love song with "I may not always love you", on God Only Knows, but I have to mention Jarvis Cocker, whose work is littered with magnificent openings. Maybe Razzmatazz: "The trouble with your brother / He's always sleeping with your mother."

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 27 September 2002 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"Now you wanna know the reason why I cheated on you..." from "Sweet Surrender" gets my attention like no other.

"I've been waiting for a guide to
come and take me by the hand ..."

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Monday, 30 September 2002 09:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Erm. FROM. Not TO. I haven't slept.

Jody Beth Rosen, Monday, 30 September 2002 10:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Pretty sure, Stew, as he repeats the signature gimmick on later albums like EXTREMIEITES (on "Money is Not Our God"). Could be Youth, I suppose, but I'd always assumed it was Jaz.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 September 2002 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

My favourites are where the opening line falls in about halfway through a conversation - two particular examples are 'Burning airlines...' by Eno ("When I got back home I found a message on the door") and 'A new kind of water' by This Heat ("I don't know either, what is the answer?"). They just plunge you straight into the song's world and there's no escape, and I love it.

It's not as much the line itself as the way it's sung. Honestly, if hearing it doesn't get you jazzed you need to check your pulse.

This one's a little long but I think it's great, and savage--from la Mitchell:

Where’s that at?
If you want me I’ll be in the bar."
