Amoeba to me really epitomizes something in the 'SoCal' strain of punk/hardcore that I find it hard to put my finger on, it might be to do with the sort of chord sequence it uses.

Peace Thru Vandalism is a top album, well worth checking out.
Their later stuff is very different, kind of in the vein of 90s pop-punk like NoFX etc. A little bit too cutesy-pie at times but sometimes quite fun (although to be fair I've not listened to it in years).

god I despise NoFX so much. Still gutted the Descendents went in that vein on their comeback. What a letdown.

I voted for this. prob. my favorite Bauhaus song. In the Flat Field has a number of great trebly and slashing guitar riffs that elevate it out of the goth ghetto and make it a postpunk classic of sorts. Dark Entries in particular has a genuine punk drive that nicely offsets Murphy's theatrical tendencies. I'm not a goth fan, but this track isn't particularly goth IMO.

Metallica's a weird band at this point. they seem so revered and reviled both critically and popularly that it's tough to say where they'll place. I nominated I Don't Want to Hear It, and while it's a good song, I'm not too ruffled by its placement (I didn't vote for it, either). the Minor Threat rec is one of the very few that I appreciate as a single package more than a collection of stellar songs, and I expect it'll place relatively high on the album poll. the songs themselves are great, but they're so lean and focused and brief that it's easy to appreciate them almost as a single track (Reign in Blood is also like this IMO).

I nominated both this tune and Clothes Hoist, but I'm really pissed to see the F/i so low. it was a top 5 track f/me, and is IMO one of the best psych tunes ever. F/i hammer away at an extended rave-up until it gradually gels into a hypnotic wash of floating and grinding guitars just barely anchored to the rhythm. an exceptional intersection of noise rock and psych that should really be about twenty minutes long. takes a couple minutes to get going, though, so feel free to skip to 2:00 in the vid (ha!).

F/i rule I love them, but tbh I thought George & I were the only ones on here who did so I AM pleased to see them here.

Influenced by the industrial sounds of Throbbing Gristle and the space rock of Hawkwind and Pink Floyd, Franecki grabbed a couple F/I members and released the vinyl-only Ispepnaibara ("Arabian Pepsi" backwards) in 1991 on the experimental label RRR.

my tracks ballot was kind of halfhearted; I wasnt even going to make one, which is why I didnt nominate any tracks, and most of my favourite tracks werent nominated. That said, F/i is a band I love but haven't heard a ton from so I was a bit sparing about voting for them, at least in tracks.

I did vote for one F/i track which hopefully will show up sooner or later

Branca was one of my nominations and was in my top 20. one of his most accessible and "rocking" works outside of The Theoretical Girls/Static. the track begins in a recognizably minimalist vein with a stark foundation of compulsive, skeletal guitars, but around the 2:40 mark kicks in with rolling drums and additional layers of interlocking guitars that build into an anthemic, exuberant tangle. recommended.

Van Halen have a ton of dope tracks - all sadly compromised by the singing of David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar.

"Bringing on the Heartbreak" has to be a contender. The chunky guitars that pop in during the pre-chorus are so jarring (Radiohead stole this idea for "Creep"), and Joe Elliot's accent on the "taking all the best of me" line is amazing; all the refinement is stripped away and he just sounds like a pathetic lout. DJP - Hanoi Rocks = fun early trashy glam - they influenced a lot of the early LA hair metal

it helps if you think of them in a New York Dolls way, where attitude is everything and the playing/performance isn't meant to blow you away so much as grow on you (like the many fungi in their leather pants)

From the 2 HR tracks that have placed, I enjoyed Tragedy a lot. Don't Ever Leave me... erm, not so much.
I've been kind of wary of HR ever since they were cited as a major on the first Manics album, which imo was about 70% garbage (albeit garbage with good lyrics in places). Maybe it's time to give them a proper try.
